12 SPECIAL FEATURE 46 THE ROYAL FALCON SOARS! ASIAN GOLF had the opportunity of showcasing Saudi Arabia at its 2019 Asia Pacific Golf Summit in New Delhi, India and this provided an excellent insight to what was evolving in the giant Arab nation. What was revealed at the Summit left no doubt that it is the final frontier of golf.

54 MARINA BAY HAS DONE IT AGAIN! Marina Bay Golf Course, the Singapore-based public access golf course is renowned for constantly seeking to push the envelope when it comes to delivering a better playing experience for golfers. It’s latest industry first is the conversion of its entire driving range, all 114b bays, with state-of-the-art golf simulators from Foresight Sports, the acknowledged leader in this area of golf.

It all started way back in 2007 when the Asia Pacific Golf Group (APGG) took what was then regarded as risky bid to try and organise an event for the golf trade in the Asia Pacific region. The effort was a guarded one given the fact that a large organisation had just dumped its effort to run a golf show based in Singapore. The excuse was that a golf conference or trade show was not a viable proposition for the region. Against this gloomy backdrop, APGG went ahead with its plans and launched the Asia Pacific Golf Summit (APGS) in 2007 and the first venue was Singapore. The event proved to be a success and provided the confidence for APGG to grow the Summit. Over the years, against a myriad of challenges like mass political protest campaigns, life-threatening floods and an untimely death of a monarch in Thailand and choking pollution problems in India, APGS was staged and staged successfully over thirteen years in seven different Asian countries. This just proved that APGG had the stamina and chutzpah to keep up the grind and build APGS into the best and longest running knowledge event on the business of golf in the Asia Pacific. Besides it being the only show that moved from city to city in Asia, it also can claim that more of golf’s glitterati attended and spoke at the event. Legendary names like Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Peter Thomson, Greg Norman, Annika Sorenstam and many more such luminaries graced the event with their presence. It was also the only industry event that honoured and inducted some of the industry’s heroes into the prestigious Asia Pacific Golf Hall of Fame. Legends like Dr. David Chu, Jack Nicklaus, Dr. Pawan Munjal and other notables have their names and achievements forever enshrined at the soon-to-be permanent home for the industry’s highest recognition award at the Dr. David Chu Golf Museum in the giant Mission Hills Resort in Shenzhen, China.

70 PGA TOUR: THE TIGER-ERNIE RUMBLE SET TO ERUPT! It’s been months in the making and it’s about ready to erupt. The 2019 Presidents Cup clash between the International team of Ernie Els and the American team of Tiger Woods promises to be an explosive battle. Both Els and Tiger feel that they have the best team going into the challenge and given their respective confidence in the outcome, everything points to a nail-biting final blow-out in Australia. The PGA TOUR’s Chuah Choo Chiang provides a preview.

78 PGA TOUR: SUPER HERO IM! In his first year on the big tour, South Korea’s Sungjae Im has gained the respect of his peers and has been declared the PGA TOUR’s Rookie of the Year – a major achievement in his young professional playing career. The PGA TOUR’s Chuah Choo Chiang reports.

62 FINALLY, TOPGOLF COMES TO ASIA! Topgolf has entered into a franchise agreement with Sports Entertainment Asia, H.K. Limited (SEAL) with plans to open venues in Greater China (comprising Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) and the Philippines.

Twelve months have just gone fleeting by and 2019 will go down in the history books as a truly incredible year for Asian professional golf.

T

he measure of Asia’s success can be seen in the way the Continent’s stars beat out top world class competition to emerge as the best in the business. The stars who put on stellar perfor-

mances in 2019 are South Korea’s Jin Young

Ko, Sei Young Kim and Sungjae Im. Each and every one of these stars made Asia proud! Arguably the stand-out was Ko who won the 2019 Rolex ANNIKA Major Award which recognizes the player who has the most outstanding record in all five major championships during the 2019 LPGA Tour season. Ko received the honour through her wins at the ANA Inspiration and The Evian Championship - her first two career major championship victories - and an impressive third-place finish at the AIG Women’s British Open, The 24-year-old Ko joins similar stellar performances of past Asian stars like Inbee Park (2015), So Yeon Ryu (2017) and Ariya Jutanugarn (2018). Another reason for Asia to celebrate is The PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award for 2018/19 which was claimed by Sungjae Im, who took home the Arnold Palmer Award. It was a tough field of rookies but it was the consistency of Im which earned him the Rookie of the Year title.

THE FINAL BOUQUET WENT TO SEI YOUNG KIM WHO WON THE US$1.5 MILLION, THE RICHEST PRIZE IN THE HISTORY OF WOMEN’S GOLF. Im was the only rookie to make it through to the season-ending Tour Championship after a season featuring in 35 tournaments, 26 of which he made the cut. In total, he claimed seven top-10 finishes and 16 top 25 finishes, while also topping the statistics for rounds in the 60s (60), hole outs (25) and birdies (480). The final bouquet went to Sei Young Kim who won the US$1.5 million, the richest prize in the history of women’s golf. She finished a wire-to-wire victory for her third LPGA Tour title of the year and 10th of her career. ASIAN GOLF salutes all three of Asia’s best for reaching the pinnacle of professional golf. What these three Asians have done creates a pathway for aspiring Asians to shoot for the stars and to excel at the highest level of the professional game. Well done Asia!

T

hirteen years is a long time for any industry event to survive and grow. APGS did just that. Year after year, it strived to bring new ideas and new technology to the golf industry

in Asia.

“It was never an easy task to conceptualise, organise and stage the Summit,” said Mike Sebastian, the chief executive officer of APGG and the owner and producer of APGS. “Every year presented a challenge to raise funds and stage a world class event and we were always driven by one motivation which was to always produce a world class event and I would like to believe that we achieved it every time around,” Sebastian said. Perhaps the Legendary Marketing Guru, Andrew Wood summed it all up most effectively when he said, “I wanted to formally congratulate you and your team on another great event. Few people know just how much work goes into organizing an event on this scale but I do and none of my own were ever as good as yours! It’s also far better than any of the events I speak at in the United States or in the United Kingdom.” Over the years, APGS has collected numerous compliments and kudos and according to Sebastian, “this is what has kept us going for thirteen years even though the challenges at times were seemingly insurmountable.” APGS 2019 will go down in the event’s history as one of the best in the series. It was special and

unique in many ways. To start with, it was staged in India where golf made its first appearance outside of Scotland back in 1829 at what is today known as the Royal Calcutta Golf Club in Kolkata, the oldest golf club in India and the first outside Great Britain. Unlike previous years where APGS was always staged in a top international five-star hotel, 2019 was different. “The host, the multi-award winning DLF Golf and Country Club wanted the Summit to be staged on their grounds which meant having to build a giant marquee to hold the event,” said Sebastian. The marquee that was built was an engineering feat in itself and it was quite an awe-inspiring sight to behold. “It had everything that could have been installed in a giant ballroom at a five-star hotel plus more ….just imagine having a giant LED screen measuring more than 45-feet across which was the biggest ever used at APGS,” observed Sebastian.

IT WAS NEVER AN EASY TASK TO CONCEPTUALISE, ORGANISE AND STAGE THE SUMMIT, EVERY YEAR PRESENTED A CHALLENGE TO RAISE FUNDS AND STAGE A WORLD CLASS EVENT AND WE WERE ALWAYS DRIVEN BY ONE MOTIVATION WHICH WAS TO ALWAYS PRODUCE A WORLD CLASS EVENT AND

I WOULD LIKE TO BELIEVE THAT WE ACHIEVED IT EVERY TIME AROUND. – MIKE SEBASTIAN

The staging of the event was professionally executed by technicians who were master craftsmen at their trade. The actual proceedings was a special treat to watch and India pulled out all the stops to stage a spectacular light and sound show to match high quality presentations delivered by more than 20 international speakers over a three-day programme. “The APGG team had additional challenges that hit it from every angle including the air quality in India but all the delegates I spoke to were very happy with the event,” declared Wood who was a speaker at APGS 2019. More than 200 international and Indian delegates were registered for APGS. With the Summit now in the record books, APGS 2019 has been a fascinating and impressive milestone in the long history of the event. “As everybody already is aware, it has done its job for the past thirteen years and while it has been a great event for the industry, the time has come to use its landmark achievements to serve as a launch pad to introduce an event that is even bigger and better going forward,” stated Sebastian.

“It is only natural that one holds on to something that is good and not broken but I felt that APGS had to make way for a bigger, better and more comprehensive event that was representative of the general dynamic growth of the Asia Pacific region ….. it was felt that APGS should mutate into a global event, the biggest and the first of its kind in the world.” As such, APGS has created a pathway for the launch of the World Golf Expo 2020. This will be a major golf industry event jointly organised by the giant Mission Hills Group of China and APGG and it will be staged in Haikou, the capital city of the Chinese island of Hainan.

I WANTED TO FORMALLY CONGRATULATE YOU AND YOUR TEAM ON ANOTHER GREAT EVENT.

FEW PEOPLE KNOW JUST HOW MUCH WORK

GOES INTO ORGANIZING AN EVENT ON THIS SCALE

I DO AND NONE OF MY OWN WERE EVER AS GOOD AS YOURS! IT’S ALSO FAR BETTER THAN ANY OF THE EVENTS I SPEAK AT IN THE UNITED STATES OR IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. – ANDREW WOOD BUT

“We are pleased to host the inaugural World Golf Expo 2020 at the Mission Hills Golf Resort in Haikou and together with all of our industry partners, we expect to stage an event that will capture the dynamism of golf and help promote its growth on a global scale,” said Tenniel Chu, vice-chairman of the Mission Hills Group and the chairman of the organising Committee of WGE 2020. “India was a perfect venue to host the final APGS Summit and it has provided the inspiration and impetus to launch WGE 2020 which is destined to become the world’s biggest golf event of its kind,” Sebastian point out. Details of WGE 2020 will become available in January when its official web site is launched.

WE ARE PLEASED TO HOST THE INAUGURAL WORLD GOLF EXPO 2020 AT THE MISSION HILLS GOLF RESORT IN HAIKOU AND TOGETHER WITH ALL OF OUR INDUSTRY PARTNERS, WE EXPECT TO STAGE AN EVENT THAT WILL CAPTURE THE DYNAMISM OF GOLF AND HELP PROMOTE ITS GROWTH ON A GLOBAL SCALE.

– TENNIEL CHU

WITH THE SUMMIT NOW IN THE RECORD BOOKS, APGS 2019 HAS BEEN A FASCINATING AND IMPRESSIVE MILESTONE IN THE LONG HISTORY OF THE EVENT.

“AS EVERYBODY ALREADY IS AWARE, IT HAS DONE

ITS JOB FOR THE PAST THIRTEEN YEARS AND WHILE IT HAS BEEN A GREAT EVENT FOR THE INDUSTRY, THE TIME HAS COME TO USE ITS LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENTS TO SERVE AS A LAUNCH PAD TO INTRODUCE AN EVENT THAT IS EVEN BIGGER AND BETTER GOING FORWARD,

ASIA PACIFIC INTER-CLUB | 2019 GOLF TOURNAMENT

PRIZE PRESENTATION

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the second-largest country in the Arab world, the ďŹ fth-largest in Asia, and the 12th-largest in the world. It ranks as the largest economy in the Middle East and it is blessed with one of the world’s youngest populations; 50 percent of its 33.4 million people are under 25 years old. The territory that now constitutes Saudi Arabia was the site of several ancient cultures and civilizations. The prehistory of Saudi Arabia shows some of the earliest traces of hu-

man activity in the world. Today, Saudi Arabia has become the world’s second largest oil producer and the world’s largest oil exporter. The kingdom is categorized as a World Bank high-income economy with a high Human Development Index and is the only Arab country to be part of the G-20 major economies. It is therefore not surprising that American President Donald Trump was quoted as saying: “Saudi Arabia makes a billion dollars a day, okay? They make a billion dollars a day.”

A

SIAN GOLF had the opportunity of showcasing Saudi Arabia at its 2019 Asia Pacific Golf Summit in New Delhi, India and this provided an excellent insight to what was evolving in the giant Arab nation. What was revealed at the Summit left no doubt that it is the final frontier of golf. Saudi Arabia has embarked on a dynamic doublepronged strategy that seeks to promote golf to a domestic population with whom it is alien, and to promote itself to an external audience possessing only a one-dimensional perspective of the country. In short, Saudi’s mission is to become the fastest growing golf destination in the world. And the planning phase has already concluded, and the nation is set to soar. The central driving force behind the game’s national

development is Golf Saudi, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Saudi Golf Federation, which is backing a bold vision with capital investment. Unlike any initiative, some US$1 billion is being ploughed into giving golf a high-octane kick-start. Among wide-ranging infrastructural developments, the building of a reported 13 golf courses is likely to gain most public traction. But this is only scratching the surface. With the ancient game of golf languishing in some of the game’s most developed markets, Saudi Arabia is set to give golf a much-needed shot in the arm. A shot which will most certainly inject new energy into the game. While it has the vision and the financial resources to make its golf dream become a reality. It has also adopted a very pragmatic outlook that is based on a willingness to watch and learn from established markets.

WORLD GOLF OF FAME STAR ERNIE ELS IN DISCUSSION WITH MAJED AL-SOROUR, CEO OF THE SAUDI GOLF FEDERATION.

“After an extensive period of evaluation and dialogue with the industry, we now have a robust strategy for golf’s evolution in Saudi Arabia,” said His Excellency Yasir Bin Othman Al-Rumayyan, Chairman of the Saudi Golf Federation. “Our development programme will see an initial investment of up US$1billion in building a number of new golf courses with varied characteristics nationwide. Within this we have committed to urban-based entertainment focussed golf developments, with a healthy portion to nurturing participation via modern consumer engagement techniques.” The fundamental pillars of the strategy are founded on consumer access and understanding modern consumption habits, allowing golf to find a voice among a

journey to get to know and hopefully fall in love with the sport.” Collectively, some 3,500 jobs are expected to be created, supported by the introduction of a fully-fledged education programme. Discussions are ongoing with ministries and global golf education bodies to fast track the upskilling of golf industry professionals who can be integrated into developments worldwide, gaining the vocational experience and expertise to lead Saudi’s golf future. “Our analysis leads us to conclude there is a clear necessity to include broader access points to the game within our model to create a healthy ecosystem that can sustain high participation rates,” explained Majed Al-Sorour, CEO of the Saudi Golf Federation. A comprehensive school programme will set out to embed golf into the sporting curriculum, giving youngsters their first experiences of golf and impart the fundamentals behind what makes the game so great. The introduction of tried and tested methods and a ‘teach-the-teacher’ philosophy will give the sport the chance to cement the solid foundation for which it is being built. “We want to foster a strong population of Saudi golf industry professionals and target installing our first Saudi golf club general manager by 2026,” said Al-Sorour. “We are working with our supplier network and partners to allow our people to gain as broad an operational skill set as possible and

These are becoming ever more defined on the horizon, with golf very much at the front and centre of the master plan. The four Giga projects – Qiddiya, Amaala, Red Sea Project and Neom – make provisions for a recognised economic pull from golf, whilst making provisions to explore modern tactics to take advantage of the growing appeal of entertainment golf. Simultaneously the groups are aligning with stakeholders to provide the conditions to generate interest from the lucrative global golf tourism sector, as well as the forecasted domestic growth. A project of such scale in a traditionally non-golfing nation would be considered an undertaking fraught with risks. But with the solid backing by Golf Saudi and with the collective impact and support of all associated stakeholders, success is presumed rather than expected. As ambitious as its infrastructural ambitions are, if there is any metaphor which best describes Saudi’s objective to become a serious and respected player in the global golf picture, it is perhaps the upcoming Golf Saudi Summit in February 2020. This specialist trade event will bring together captains of industry to explore new solutions to set and reach higher benchmarks for golf’s future. This is highly commendable in that this initiative is being undertaken by a newcomer to the golf industry. The vision and mission for golf in Saudi is set – like the brave falcon, Saudi Arabia is ready to soar and shine as golf’s new North star. It has everything to provide the template for the game’s success in a brand-new region which in turn will help spur the growth of the game globally.

WE WANT, AS THE SAUDI PEOPLE, TO ENJOY THE COMING DAYS AND CONCENTRATE ON DEVELOPING OUR SOCIETY AND DEVELOPING OURSELVES AS INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES WHILE RETAINING OUR RELIGION AND CUSTOMS.

– HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS MOHAMMAD BIN SALMAN

When it comes to the adoption of new ideas to help make the playing of golf a more enjoyable experience, you’ve got to hand it to the Singapore-based Marina Bay Golf Course. While it may be a public course, it takes the lead virtually every time when it comes to welcoming new technologies with wide open arms. Innovation is central to the club and it is always looking out for new ideas that would add that special touch to the playing experience. It was the first club in Asia to introduce a par six on the course. It was the first to introduce three-wheel scooters for golfers to scoot around the course. And the club’s latest innovation is a massive initiative to introduce the revolutionary Foresight Sports’ “Total Range” facility.

It was not too long ago that a new craze started sweeping North America. With every new establishment that opened, crowds simply filed through its gates to indulge and feel the experience. In the early formative days, many critics and purists of the game of golf felt that this new experience was going to be just a fad. However, as the months and years slipped by, the fad became firmly established and it just kept opening new establishments across North America. The craze made its first foray into Asia when it was introduced to Asia at the 2017 Asia Pacific Golf Summit in Danang, Vietnam. In less than two years after that, it is set to start in Asia. Introducing Topgolf, soon to be playing in your city!

It’s been months in the making and it’s about ready to erupt. The 2019 Presidents Cup clash between the International team of Ernie Els and the American team of Tiger Woods promises to be an explosive battle. Both Els and Tiger feel that they have the best team going into the challenge and given their respective confidence of the outcome, everything points to a nail-biting final blow-out in Australia. The PGA TOUR’s Chuah Choo Chiang provides a preview:

In years to come, linguists may well need to reword the old adage “Rising from the ashes like a phoenix” if golf legend Tiger Woods puts an exclamation point to an amazing 2019 by leading the United States Team to victory at the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club this December.

store,” said Woodland, who will make his debut in the Presidents Cup. Next up for Tiger is to extend the U.S. dominance in the Presidents Cup which the team has won the last seven editions. At Royal Melbourne, site of U.S. Team’s lone defeat in 1998, Woods will be assisted by Fred Couples, Zach Johnson and Steve Stricker. Woods acknowledged that leading as a playing captain will present different challenges, but he is confident of emulating Hale Irwin’s victorious feat in 1994. “It’s an honour and a tremendous responsibility to be able to be captain and represent our country. We’re going to have a pretty solid team going down there against the Internationals,” said Tiger. “I’m going to be getting ready as the same time, it’s going to be a lot of work, but something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. On paper, we certainly have the advantage in the world rankings. When it comes right down to it, like I told the guys, when you start out on Thursday, it’s 0-0. We must go out and win this Cup. Doesn’t matter what the world ranking is. You have to go and beat the other guys, and that’s what we’re going to try and do.” And should Tiger go on to rewrite another piece of golf history in Australia, it may well be time to change the old saying to: ‘Rising from the ashes like a Tiger’.

If Sungjae Im was to appear in a Marvel blockbuster movie, he could easily slip into the role of any superhero. Such has been the Korean phenom’s explosive rise in the game that his peers and commentators on the PGA TOUR have given him nicknames such as “Ironman”, “The Beast” and “The Machine.”

When ASIAN GOLF first got wind of the South Korean phenom, Sungjae Im, we felt it in our bones that this young man was destined for super stardom. Signs of this materialising could be seen in his performance on the Web.com Tour in America where he became a trail-blazer. It did not take him too long to become a star on the feeder tour and it was not too long before he earned the right to play on the world’s richest professional tour, the PGA TOUR. In his first year on the big tour, Im has gained the respect of his peers and has been declared the PGA TOUR’s Rookie of the Year – a major achievement in his young professional playing career. The PGA TOUR’s Chuah Choo Chiang reports:

securing his PGA TOUR card.

“In your first year, you just want to get your card for next year. To survive,” said Im, who was the only rookie to qualify for the TOUR Championship. “I’ve played better than expected. I could give myself nine out of 10 (score).” Jordan Spieth, winner of the 2015 FedExCup and a prodigy himself, expects Im to remain a talking point for a very long time in the game. “He worked his way up from a very young age through the Korn Ferry Tour and now the PGA TOUR seems easy for him which is unusual as generally there is more of a learning curve. But he seems to be ahead of the curve,” said Spieth. Kevin Na, a four-time PGA TOUR winner added: “I can see him as being the next best Korean player.” Im, ranked 34th in the world at the time of writing, hopes to end a memorable 2019 campaign with a rare Presidents Cup victory for the International Team. The U.S. has won the last seven straight editions. “It has always been a dream of mine to make the Presidents Cup, so I’m so happy to have been chosen as a captain’s pick. I really want to beat the U.S. Team,” he said. He recalls watching on TV the 2015 Presidents Cup in Incheon, Korea where home hero Sangmoon Bae was involved in dramatic final singles match against Bill Haas which went down the wire and ended in a narrow 1-point victory for the Americans. “It motivated me a lot to make the International Team one day,” he said. “I know that if I play to my capabilities and have a good performance, I can definitely contribute to the team.” Im thinks he can establish solid partnerships with Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama or fellow rookie Joaquin Niemann of Chile. “I’ve played a lot with Joaquin and we have a similar style of play. He’s very accurate and I feel like the way we execute our short game is similar. With Hideki, we both have unique swings, so maybe we can get in the heads of the American players if we were to be paired together!” laughed Im.

I’VE PLAYED A LOT WITH JOAQUIN AND WE HAVE A SIMILAR STYLE OF PLAY. HE’S VERY ACCURATE AND I FEEL LIKE THE WAY WE EXECUTE OUR SHORT GAME IS SIMILAR. WITH HIDEKI, WE BOTH HAVE UNIQUE SWINGS, SO MAYBE WE CAN GET IN THE HEADS OF THE AMERICAN PLAYERS IF WE WERE TO BE PAIRED TOGETHER!
