SOLHEIM: My grandfather, Karsten Solheim, was the first to realize the importance of engineering clubs to make the game easier. PING was built on that idea and it’s why we’re in business today. But Karsten knew that better engineering was only part of the equation. Custom fitting was the other part if a golfer wanted to get maximum benefits from the club. We believe that is the way forward for golfers to improve. With that said, the human element of golf means perfection may never be achieved. But that’s what makes golf so appealing. I think most golfers know that and just enjoy the pursuit and challenge of getting better by improving their ability, not relying only on their equipment.
ASIAN GOLF: This automatically leads to customisation of clubs. It would not be wrong to say that PING wrote the book on custom fitting – looking back on this practice, how has custom fitting been accepted and how do you feel about the acceptance rate of custom fitting by golfers?
SOLHEIM:

More than a decade ago, an Arab golf visionary realised the need for a professional golf tour to cater to aspiring golfers in the Middle East and African region. To put everything into perspective, the Middle East and North Africa accounts for a huge land mass of over 1.8 million square miles and with a population in excess of 578 million. These numbers are staggering any which way one looks at it and this region presents great growth opportunities for golf. What it needed was the drive and initiative of an entrepreneur who possessed the panache and bold vision to open up the geography and its people to develop their skills and prowess to compete in the professional game of golf. That visionary is Mohamed Juma Buamaim, one of the acknowledged pioneers of golf in that region. Under his watch, golf experienced a meteoric rise in the region, and he was one of the prime architects behind the creation of “Golf in Dubai” which helped place Dubai on the global golf map through the staging of high-profile international tournaments like the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters. That generation (circa 1946 – 1964) is ageing, with the tailenders now beginning to enter retirement. Against this scenario, do you think the tailenders of the baby boomers are one of the factors causing an all-round growth in demand?

The big headliners among the stars who have been given the release include Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Dustin Johnson. Additionally, many of golf’s DP World Tour (formerly Euro-pean Tour) stars have also joined the field, including Adam Scott, Tyrrell Hatton, Xander Schauffele, Tommy Fleetwood, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen and Paul Casey.

This introduction is for the benefit of all those who do not know what the R&A is. According to its website, it describes itself as an organisation that “engages in and supports activities undertaken for the benefit of the sport of golf.” Together with its counterpart across the Atlantic Ocean, the USGA, it governs the sport of golf worldwide. The R&A, through R&A Rules Ltd, governs worldwide, outside of the United States and Mexico, with the consent of 156 organisations from amateur and professional golf, and on behalf of over 30 million golfers in 143 countries. There is a lot more but for the sake of brevity and relevance to this article, the key focus relates to the R&A’s governance of professional golf.

In a very autocratic and high-handed manner, the R&A has decreed that the one playing spot for the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit winner for 2022 will be taken away – just like that! Wow! That is very harsh indeed! What has the Asian Tour done to deserve this chop? According to a spokesperson for the R&A, this is all he said: “We review and update our exemptions from time to time and any changes are considered carefully by our championships committee.” The answer is so typical of a bureaucratic response which just goes to confirm the autocratic style of governing that the R&A indulges in. To deprive the Asian Tour of its playing spot for its 2021 Order of Merit winner is a shame that all of golf should support especially when one considers the 20-year affiliation that the R&A has had with the Asian Tour. Whatever happened to all that talk about growing the game? Reckon this is what is to be expected of a fair-weather friend! Golfers will have opportunities at 16 professional events in eleven countries to get a slot from the minimum of forty-six places available in the qualifying series. Three players have already booked their berths through the Joburg Open, the first event in the Series which was played in South Africa last month. The SMBC Singapore Open will be the next chance for golfers to qualify when it is played at Sentosa from 20-23 January. The qualifying series provides golfers with opportunities to qualify at events around the world on the PGA TOUR, DP World Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia, Asian Tour, Korean Tour, Japan Golf Tour and Sunshine Tour. For the first time, the New Zealand Open on the PGA Tour of Australasia will be offered three qualifying places. On the PGA TOUR, the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and John Deere Classic will each have three qualifying places. Two places will be available at the RBC Canadian Open, while the last qualifying place in will be confirmed at the Barbasol Championship on the eve of the Championship. The Genesis Scottish Open, which is co-sanctioned by the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour for the first time, will carry three qualifying berths. Three places at both the Irish Open and Dutch Open on the DP World Tour will be available. Four places will be on offer at the Mizuno Open in Japan and two places at the KOLON Korea Open.
