Wlelcome Message Another year is almost at its end and if one was to take a health check on the global golf industry, it is definitely not in the best of health. In the developed world, golf continues to slide in terms of growth and participation. In North America, golf courses are still very much in a state of decline with more courses being sold off or shut down to make way for development. While there are more negatives than positives in our industry, let us look at how we can manage things in Asia and ensure that we keep the industry moving along a pathway of growth and progress. Asia is most definitely taking the lead to transform and grow the game of golf and the 2014 Asia Pacific Golf Summit is truly living up to its mission which is an emphatic and declared commitment to help golf grow in Asia. After months of planning, it was agreed that the programme for APGS 2014 should focus on three critical trends which examine:  NEW DIRECTIONS for the golf industry in Asia;  NEW ENERGY to drive the growth of golf in Asia;  A REVITALISED INDUSTRY to take golf to new heights in Asia; As such, each selected speaker is an expert in his own field and you can expect to be exposed to new thoughts and learn new ways to help grow the

golf industry in Asia. Besides the innovative thinking and new ideas that will be showcased at APGS 2014, we will also be unveiling the findings of three revolutionary market research projects which are:  The inaugural Southeast Asian Golf Facilities Survey  The Inaugural Asian Golf Consumer Survey;  The Inaugural Golf Architects Survey; These are special projects specially commissioned by the Asia Pacific Golf Group in collaboration with the CMAA Asia Pacific Pte Ltd and Golf Business Advisory Services of Australia. One of the key highlights of APGS 2014 will be the keynote address by the Vice Chairman of the Mission Hills Group, Tenniel Chu who will be sharing details of the group’s epic billion-dollar investment in Haikou, Hainan which essentially places focus emphasis on how the world class golf resort has been designed to offer a myriad of leisure and recreational attractions built around golf. Through its innovations, Mission Hills has shown how it hopes to grow golf exponentially not only in China but throughout Asia. This cutting edge thinking is also reflected in another innovative initiative which comes from Singapore. Given the great interest in golf in the affluent island nation and the scarcity of land, a novel idea to create mega indoor facilities under the brand

name “Stadium Golf” has been launched and will be showcased at APGS 2014. Stadium Golf is a platform that brings golf indoors utilising advanced golf simulation techniques – the primary thrust of this concept is to create a realistic and immersive experience for all level of players, especially juniors and beginners using the best golf simulation technology in the market made available through its exclusive technology and equipment partners. Stadium Golf has plans for the franchising of its programmes throughout key Asian centres. Both the Mission Hills and Stadium Golf projects are world class programmes designed to drive the growth of golf and have been evolved in Asia by Asian entrepreneurs. As stated, this year’s programme is aimed at sharing new ideas and revolutionary ways in which to help the golf industry in Asia grow. We think we have been successful in assembling a world-class list of speakers and it is our hope that each and every one of you will take away a little something special to help further enhance your own business. It leaves me to wish you a fruitful experience at APGS 2014, happy networking and enjoy the Summit and Singapore.

Special Profile

The Entrepreneur: Madame Nguyen Thi Nga

Asia's Most Powerful Woman in Golf Hails From Vietnam She is one of the most dynamic women business entrepreneurs in Vietnam. Through her diversified business interests, she provides gainful employment to about 10,000 people. Her main business is in banking and she is widely recognized as being amongst the wealthiest people in Vietnam. But what sets her apart from most other powerful women in business is her tremendous passion for the game of golf. “I love the game and one day when I have more time on my hands, I intend to play as much golf as I can,” is how Madame Nguyen Thi Nga describes her passion for golf. For her entrepreneurial spirit and drive and for her passionate attachment to golf, Madame Nga will be honoured at the 2014 Asia Pacific Golf Summit with the prestigious Asia Pacific Golf Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award. This award will be presented to Madame Nga at the Asian Golf Awards in Singapore on November 15. Madame Nga serves as the Chairman of Southeast Asia Joint Stock Commercial Bank (SeABank), which has more than 155 branches in Vietnam which collectively employ more than 2,100 staff with total assets exceeding S$4.7 billion. Besides her hectic schedule as a top banker, she is the Chairman of King’s Valley Corporation, and the Chairman of BRG, a group of companies doing diversified businesses which include real estate development, golf courses, resorts, hotels, construction, infrastructure, retail chains, and automobile distribution.

Madame Nga also serves on the ASEAN Business Advisory Council and actively contributes to the activities of the Council. Amongst the golf properties that she owns is the award winning Kings’ Island Golf Resort in Hanoi and the Doson Seaside Golf Resort in the city of Haiphong. “Both these golf courses are of international standard and Kings’ Island is widely regarded as the most popular and best golf course in Hanoi,” said Madame Nga. Her passion for golf continues to play out in Vietnam as she is now anxiously awaiting the completion of her newest golf course, the Legend Hills Golf Resort which is located in a spectacular setting in the province of Soc Son in Hanoi. The Legend Hills Golf Resort is Jack’s Nicklaus’ first golf course in Vietnam. “I wanted Jack to design my course because I wanted it to be ranked as the best course in Vietnam,” said Madame Nga. According to her, this brand new 18-hole

golf course will feature “twin greens” on every hole, thus offering a golfer the unique experience to play 36-holes on an 18-hole golf course. The new course is expected to be open for play in 2015. More than US$100 million has been invested in the Legend Hills Golf Resort and some of its other features besides the golf course will be a sports entertainment centre, restaurants, hotels, eco clubs, villas, parks, public services and lakes. Commenting on the Legend Hills Golf Resort, Madame Nga said, “Jack Nicklaus is not only a legendary golfer but also has a reputation for designing very unique and impressive golf courses and we know that he will deliver a golf course that will be the pride of Vietnam.”

The Distinguished Clubs of the World Programme Comes to Asia Boardroom Magazine of America, the owner of the Distinguished Clubs award programme has entered into a partnership with the Asia Pacific Golf Group to extend the programme to Asia with effect from January 2015. This programme is designed to help vitalize and preserve the institution of private clubs by fostering a ceaseless drive to ever improve the “Member Experience” provided by private clubs throughout the world. Distinguished Gold Club status will be awarded to the top 10 percent of clubs, and the top 5 percent will be awarded Distinguished Emerald Club status. “To be a Distinguished Gold Club is to be

one of a highly select group of private clubs that have been recognized as providing an absolutely excellent Member Experience, and to be a Distinguished Emerald Club, the club must provide a Member Experience at a level attained by only the finest clubs in the world,” declared John Fornaro, Co-Founder, Owner, and Publisher of BoardRoom magazine. Private clubs have filled a valuable role of bringing together like-minded people who enjoy doing some of the same things together. “It is a tremendous experience to being a member of a fine private club,” said Fornaro. “We believe that it is the very “member experience” aspect of being part of a private club that is, itself, what most attracts and

retains members.” The distinction between a Distinguished Gold Club and a Distinguished Emerald Club is nuanced yet thoroughly recognizable, for it is based on the most important of all intangible qualities. Reputation. Reverence. Admiration. Brand Equity. Fame. Whatever you call it, it is that “X” factor that separates two clubs that both provide superlative Member Experience, but where one is a great club, while the other is the most prestigious of memberships. Details of the programme will be announced shortly.
