Improvements Planned for Ngurah Rai International Airport Bali In 2017 More Parking, Better Taxi Access, Improved Internet and Runway Enhancements in the Cards for Bali’s Airport in 2017.
B
ali’s Ngurah Rai Airport is planning to add additional parking space in order to accommodate the growing number
of cars traveling to and from the Airport and address complaints regarding parking congestion. Kompas.com reports the cost of building additional parking has been provided for in the Airport’s 2017 operating and investment budget. The general manager of the Airport Authority, I Gusti Ngurah Rai Yanus Suprayogi, said plans are to build an additional multi-level parking facility. Other improvements planned by Bali’s Airport in 2017 are improved Internet access and better facilities for taxi operations. The airport is also involved in an urgent program of runway and apron repair, with the current single runway being resurfaced each day between 2:00 am and 7:00 am when no landings and take-off of aircraft are scheduled. Plans are to resurface 80% of the Airports 3-kilometer long and 45-meter wide runway in 2017. Within the coming five years the Bali Airport hopes to create additional apron space for aircraft parking. The Government’s ambitious plans to expand the number of tourist arrivals in Bali are at odds, to some extent, with the fact that Bali is near its limit of flight slots for aircraft take offs and landings – operating some 25 flights each hour. The Goverment Plan to Have New Airport at Kubutambahan Bali Bali’s Governor travels to Jakarta to seek Transportation Ministry’s recommendation for new airport at Kubutambahan, North Bali
W
ith the status still uncertain of required recommendations for the new airport proposed for North Bali at Kubutambahan, Bali’s Governor Made Mangku Pastika flew to Jakarta on Thursday, January 19, 2016, to hold urgent meetings with the Minister of Transportation, Budi
Karya, to seek the recommendations needed to allow the airport project to move ahead. Bali Provincial spokesperson, Dewa Gede Mahendra Putra, told NusaBali that the Island’s administration want to accelerate the development of the Buleleng International Airport. For this reason, he explained, Governor Pastika, together with the Chief of Transportation for Bali, I Gusti Agung Sudarsana, traveled to Jakarta to pay a call on the Minister. Mahendra told the press that in addition to the needed recommendation letters for a new airport in North Bali, the Governor also wants to discuss with the Miniatsre infrastructure and transportation affecting Bali. Adding, “For the Buleleng Airport, there is the problem of a location permit that has yet to be issued.”
On December 7, 2016, Bali’s Deputy-Governor Ketut Sudikerta traveled to Jakarta seeking the same letter of recommendation for a North Bali Airport from the Minister of Transportation. Sudikerta said that the recommendation letter is now on the Minister’s desk awaiting the final agreement from Budi Karya. The planned airport near Kubutambahan is descried as a “floating air gateway” because plans call for the runway to be built on reclaimed land. Complaining of the difficulties in lobbying the Ministry of Transportation, Sudikerta said he continues to work hard to obtain the necessary recommendation. Meanwhile, the Director General of Air Communication has already endorsed the project’s location at Kubutambahan, North Bali, to the Minister of Transportation. The Province has also submitted documents to the Central Government expressing Bali’s preparedness to purchase 10-hectares of land needed for access to the proposed airport. The proposed airport of the north is not without its detractors. Professor Dr. I Wayan Windia, chairman of Subak Research at Udayana University is urging rejection the plan for Bali’s second airport. Professor Windia has called on Indonesian President Joko Widodo to cancel plans for the reclamation of Benoa Bay in Bali and the development of the North Bali Airport. Windia is urging a pause in the rapid development of Bali, allowing other areas of Indonesia to enjoy the benefits of economic development. Professor Windia complains that Bali is exceeding its carrying capacity and, as a result, putting the local culture under grave threat. Continuing his warning, Windia said the uncontrolled development of new hotels results in more trash, the intrusion of salt water into the water table, large migrant populations of non-Balinese, and the loss of 1,000 hectares of subak rice fields every year. source: balidiscovery.com
Tribal People of Indonesia
THE WEMALE
T
he Wemale people are one of the more ancient ethnic groups of Seram Island, Indonesia. They number over
9,000 and live in 39 villages of the central area of this island. Like the Alune people in the west, the Wemale people originate from a common ancestral group called the Patasiwa. The Wemale language is of MalayoPolynesian origin and it is divided in a northern and a southern form, having variants
known
as
Horale,
Kasieh,
Uwenpantai, Honitetu and Kawe. The northern form is spoken by about 5,000 people and the Southern Wemale is spoken by about 3,700 people. The Hainuwele legend is an origin myth from the Wemale and Alune folklore.
30
It was recorded by the German ethnologist Adolf Ellegard Jensen in his expedition to the Maluku Islands in 1937–1938. Traditionally the Wemale lived off forest products. Much of their diet was based on the sago palm. They also practiced shifting cultivation. Males used to engage in warrior activities against neighboring groups. Females used to spend most of their day collecting products from the forest in tall conical baskets that they carried on their backs. The top of these baskets had a characteristic funnel-shape and whatever was caught was tossed inside by the women with a swift and graceful movement.

K
ompas.com reports that the Ministry of Transportation has announced an intention to establish a new air route connecting
Jakarta and Banyuwangi in East Java. The new air route is set to commence in April 2017 and would offer a faster connection from Jakarta to both East Java, and West and North Bali that are separated by only a short ferry ride from Banyuwangi. During a visit to the new passenger terminal at the Blimbingsari Banyuwangi Airport on Saturday, December 31, 2016, told the press that the flight operations to East Java await the upgrading of the Airport’s runway from a classification “29” pavement to a stronger classification “40” status. The runway at Banyuwangi is also being widened to 35-meters. The cost of runway and apron improvements at Banyuwangi is part of an airport upgrade that has

TUMPEK LANDEP
Ceremony in Bali
T
umpek Landep is a ceremonial day at which offerings are made for objects that are made of metal. The
ceremonies start in the morning hours at the village temple when people gather for special prayers and blessings. Afterwards, at
the
home
compounds,
additional
ceremonies and blessings follow at which offerings are made for the holy family keris that most families own, but also for cars and motorbikes. In these modern times, also other objects that contain metal, such as computers, may be subject to these ceremonies.
34
Most Balinese people truly believe that these ceremonies and blessings will bring them luck and keep them safe in traffic. Tragically, at the day of Tumpek Landep the hospitals in Bali show a peak in the treatments of especially motorbike accidents. 35

The two storey boat features lounges as well as a table-seating area. A spread of tapas and canapés are available throughout the evening. While cruising a DJ will be playing a range of lounge and contemporary music creating a relaxing, stylish vibe akin to that of Bali’s swanky beachside clubs but with the added advantage of cruising the quiet waters at the same time.
