Hello ASID Georgia Members, First, I want to thank you for allowing me to serve as your President. Being a member of ASID GA has given me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people and build lifelong relationships. I hope you all enjoyed the ASID Storytellers event. Thank you to all who joined us to hear “What Inspires You” from several of our commercial and residential members. Thank you for sharing your personal stories of design, travel and all your beautiful photos. We really were inspired but none of this would have been possible if it were not for our fabulous and giving industry sponsors. Thank you to our Industry Partners for their support and enthusiasm and all that you bring to our society. We always appreciate every one of you.
From our President
As many of you know, you need to have all your CEU’s submitted by December 31, 2017 – yes it’s here again. You can always visit our calendar for more quick CEU’s offered. This report was last populated on November: 30% Professional members 33% Allied members 32% Student members 4% Associate members As I’ve stated in the past, this coming year I will continue to focus on all aspects of our chapter. We continue to need your support on a committee or as board members. Please ask any of our board of directors how you can be more involved. ASID Georgia is one of the BEST chapters in the country and we always need membership involvement. We look forward to hearing from you. Below are a few events to plan for and we look forward to seeing you there! December 12th – Holiday Wine Stoll at Avalon, Alpharetta January – Student Day March – Art Auction April – Design Excellence Awards From myself, all our Board of Directors, thank you for your membership and support. GIVE BACK It’s the season of giving and ASID recognizes that we are at our best and most impactful as a community. We all know that Design Impacts Life, and ASID Georgia members have found many opportunities to live the brand, empower design and transform lives through charitable actions. Here are some of the uplifting ways chapter members have donated their time, talents, and resources over the past year to our community. Please consider ways to donate and get involved with ASID Georgia yourself throughout this next year! In Georgia, the Grace Foundation (formerly Grace Jordan Howard Foundation) provides annual scholarships to student members of Georgia ASID who demonstrate leadership, high academic standards, design excellence, and involvement within a chapter community. Candidates must be undergraduate juniors or seniors enrolled in interior design or architecture programs that require 40 semester or 60 quarter credit hours. When you purchase tickets to ASID GA programs throughout the year, you’ll see an option to add a $5 donation to the foundation, which makes an easy way to participate! Donations can also be made directly online at charitysmith.org.

Nationally, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Foundation works tirelessly to advance the interior design profession. The foundation strives to communicate the impact of design through research, a multitude of scholarships, and continuing education to interior designers. Visit asid.org/ foundation for a list of ways to give, including single donations and planned giving. Current ASID GA Communications Director Tony Purvis received a foundation scholarship during his graduate school years, and would be happy to speak with anyone interested in learning more about or donating time and talent to the Foundation.
Contact Tony at communications@ga.asid.org. Locally, ASID Georgia hosts a variety of events for designers to use their talents to give back to the community. In 2017 and years prior, ASID Georgia has partnered with the Art Farm at Serenbe, Make a Wish Foundation, American Cancer Society, and Dwell with Dignity. This past March, ASID GA partnered with the American Cancer Society to host an art auction featuring works by the local interior design community, with proceeds benefitting both partners. For a number of years now, ASID has sponsored Dwell with Dignity, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide good design to those less fortunate. Dwell with Dignity partners with designers in the community who give their time and expertise to create homes for families that they can be proud of and thrive in. This past summer, ASID GA board members helped make a new home a reality for a deserving family in the Atlanta area. In the spirit of the season, we hope you’ll join ASID’s initiatives throughout this next year to empower our community. Check out the new ASID Georgia website to explore ways to donate and get involved throughout the year.

We think these fun sea salt soaps from Gramercy compliment PDI’s sleek and stylish bath fixtures. They are the perfect clean up-crew for those little piggies in a blanket!
Did you know that the number one served appetizer at weddings for the past 20+ years is pigs in a blanket? They’re a crowd-pleaser. Elevate yours by using puff pastry in lieu of crescent rolls (sorry Mom) & a more sophisticated sausage like Chorizo, lamb or duck sausage. Glaze those piggies with a mixture of butter, brown sugar & Worcestershire sauce, add some benne seeds or flake salt, bake, & serve them with a really delicious whole grain mustard or cranberry compote.
You will not have any leftovers.

Because this is a holiday celebration, there is no better time to bring out your grandma’s china and silver. I certainly don’t use Limoges china on a daily basis, and my strong suspicion is that very few people do. I love going to a client’s house and pulling out a forlorn silver platter from his or her china closet and using it in a buffet display. So what if it doesn’t “match” with the other pieces? People acquire things like china, crystal and silver over a lifetime and they each tell a story. Don’t fret that there’s a chip on your china bowl. It is just another thing that makes your party seem personal, even if you didn’t cook one darn thing you’re serving.
Bottom line is to relax and let the little details speak for themselves.
For washing your winter finery, Gramercy has you covered.
Be sure to stop by Gramercy for the perfect hostess gift!

I think sometimes people get hung up on the fact that comfort foods don’t seem “fancy enough”, but that doesn’t have to be the case at all. A little truffle oil or lobster can make macaroni and cheese into an experience. I love doing new plays on old standbys. It keeps things fresh, yet familiar. And by all means, have some crudités for your friend who only eats kale and jogs 10 miles a day, but odds are pretty good that she’s going to be digging into the potato gratin too, because a holiday party IS a celebration after all. People can go back to their healthy eating during the week, but serve them some really fantastic food with cream and butter and cheese. Nobody has ever said “Did you have those steamed carrots at Karen’s holiday party? They were incredible!” but they do call and ask you for the recipe for your amazing parmesan risotto.
or snacks, the easiest thing to do is to pick up some beautiful cheeses from the farmer’s market, Whole Foods or even Trader Joes. If you always keep some on hand, a cheese platter can be assembled in a matter of minutes with the addition of some fruit preserves, honey, toasted nuts, dried fruits and crostini. Do you know what really makes people think that you put a ton of time in though? The simple addition of some of those herbs you were keeping for cocktails. A few sprigs of rosemary and thyme will make your cheese plate look like something out of Bon Appetit.
Seriously. It works like a charm.

Top with Sparkling Rose and Finish With the Garnish of Your Choice. ~ PRO TIP ~
If you’re feeling extra festive, you can buy hibiscus flowers in syrup (I omit the simple syrup from the recipe in this case) and put one in the glass before you pour in the gin. Once you top it with champagne, the flower will bloom and give off the most beautiful color.

Q 1.
Congratulations on being named the “2017 ASID National Industry Partner Merit Award recipient! This national and premier award showcases your service to local and national chapters, your contributions to our overall interior design profession, and notable contributions that have enriched the human experience. What actions do you feel brought your involvement from a local influence within ASID and our industry to the national level?
A I will start here with acknowledging Grace Howard. She was a great influence and steward of ASID. She knew how to support the organization and get support from vendors in a way that made everyone collectively successful. I had a great deal of respect for her and miss her. Her creativity and support of the board enabled excellent experiences. Another key element is involvement. I enjoyed working on many committees, participating on the board, facilitating strategic planning sessions for multiple incoming Presidents. It is a wonderful way to network and develop lasting relationships with the entire community.
co n t i n ued n ex t p a ge
Hugh Latta, ASID, is also a recipient of a 2017 ASID National Award and will be featured in an upcoming issue of our Top Ten. Stay tuned!

Q 2.
Within our own ASID GA, tell us about a couple of your favorite experiences of involvement.
A My favorite experiences have been helping and facilitating the strategic direction of the organization. A Board is short term, but I am always impressed with how it moves forward, and I have loved helping with its direction. Also, the Vanguard lecture series that culminated in hearing David Kelley from IDEO speak was one of my favorite, with about 500 attendees from the Industry.
Q 3.
Your well-rounded career has spanned from design in residential and commercial firms, to commercial furniture dealers, and finally to the furniture manufacturer directly (now at Teknion). What drew you to delve within the furniture manufacturer industry, which is where you have spent most of your career?
A My career path has been interesting. I love all design. I also love helping people, designers, and their clients. I love to solve problems, complex or simple. It’s a fun way to engage in the Industry and community. As a child of an architect and a designer, I truly value what this community has to offer.
Q 4.
Specifically at Teknion, you are the Architecture & Design Workplace Consultant. Having a design background, what drew you to the A&D role, working in more of a sales environment?
A What is wonderful about design is that it can offer many avenues for a career path. I have enjoyed the different paths I have taken throughout my career. It was organic how that path unfolded, and each opportunity has allowed me to develop and continue to build new and fun relationships.

Q 5.
Do you have any exciting travel plans in the near future?
A My upcoming travel plans include Rome and Florence, Italy. While I have been before, I look forward to seeing the iconic architecture and spaces, such as the Vatican and the Colosseum, through the eyes of my 11 and 13 year old sons.
Q 6.
Overall wellness has been brought to the forefront of design in several markets recently, most notably in the workplace. Within your industry, what are one or two primary wellness characteristics that you are seeing in the workplace?
A The ability for movement within a space is imperative. From touchdown spaces to height adjustability, I see movement being a necessary part of the workplace.
Q 7.
Do you have any other hobbies that are related to art and design outside of your career?
A Prior to pursuing my Interior Design degree, I looked into Jewelry Design and Sculpture‌I have pursued jewelry design over the years at The Chastain Art Center. It continues to be a passion.

Q 8.
Work culture has changed dramatically over the past decade – what are a few of the main characteristics you are seeing this in, within your industry of corporate furniture and design?
A I think paying attention to the culture of an organization and how it wants and needs to evolve is fascinating. It has been interesting to see it change over time. One of my first projects as a designer was for PORSCHE when they relocated to Atlanta. To see how the design evolved so many years later with their experience center was great to watch.
Q 9.
What is at the top of your bucket list right now?
A Anything water related. There are many oceans I have not yet seen or sailed. Sailing has been a passion for years, from the Grenadines to the BVI’s to Lake Lanier…the light, the movement, the water, the colors. It is blissful. My preference is
