Taking place in Atlanta for the first time in five years, the 2018 show will feature 1,100 exhibitors representing more than 40 countries and take over 450,000 square feet of exhibition space at the Georgia World Congress Center. Coverings gives attendees the tips and resources they need to be leaders in their industries through unparalleled networking opportunities offered alongside the latest in products, innovations, and live demonstrations.Programming for Coverings 2018 will offer more than 45 sessions, many with free CEUs, focused on the latest products, trends and practices in the tile & stone industry. To offer attendees more time on the show floor and provide an opportunity for those wanting to stop by the show later in the work day, Coverings has announced extended hours for the opening day of the show, Tuesday, May 8. With the exhibit hall open until 6:30 p.m., this networking event – “Around the World of Tile & Stone” – will provide happy hour specials and entertainment coupled with additional time to meet fellow attendees or exhibitors and expand professional connections.

For attendees seeking new methods to discuss challenges and shared interests or to align with new potential clients for projects or business opportunities, Coverings has integrated added networking functionalities to its app. Users are encouraged to download the app in advance and complete their attendee profiles to find connections at the show. Onsite, the Meet @ Coverings area will feature a dedicated open meeting space with tables and chairs, creating an environment dedicated to fostering relationships and cultivating a connected industry. Special interactive areas will also be featured during the show: Coverings has partnered with local design firms Carson Guest, Jeffrey Bruce Baker Designs, and the Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry to design three tiny homes to showcase the synergy between beautiful design and great installation of stone and tile.

Additionally, the show has partnered with the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs to develop a student competition that will create three artistic public benches for the City of Atlanta. While competition submissions closed in early March, winning structures will be built for display at Coverings 2018 and placed in a park in Atlanta following the show. “Our partnership with the City of Atlanta gives us the opportunity to highlight the unique perspective of students, while showcasing the impact that tile artistry can have on a community” said Jennifer Hoff, president of Taffy Events, the management company for Coverings. Coverings 2018 takes place May 8-11 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA. For more information about the events planned for Coverings 2018 and the special perks planned for ASID members at this year’s show, visit coverings. com or contact Caroline Foley at cf@sharpthink.com.

REFUGEE RENAISSANCE By Mican Allen Andrews, ASID

When it comes to specifying art and accessories for a project, designers strive to find that one special statement piece. We constantly are on the hunt for a unique and socially conscious art and craft source. One such source exists just outside Atlanta, in Clarkston. Over the past twenty five years, the city of Clarkston has welcomed in upwards of 14,000 refugees. Identified as a prime resettlement locale by various refugee resettlement programs of the 1990s, its current population is comprised of approximately 43% refugees that hail from 57 different countries, with a significant percentage of the community living below the poverty line. At present, the greatest number of those refugees come from Congo and Syria.

Established as a gathering place for art, education, and recreation, the Clarkston Community Center opened in 1994 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit to act as a resource for the city’s diverse residents to connect, support, and learn. The center offers classes in Tai Chi, dance, art, and even ESL for all ages. It also has a daily after school program for middle and high school students to deter from gang activity. The monthly art programs bring together artists from around the globe to teach local residents various crafts from textile weaving, to jewelry making, and even furniture production. This summer, an artist from Turkey will be joining the Clarkston Community Center to make sculptures out of recycled water bottles. Recently, the Center opened an on-site store to sell art and items made by the refugees, with all profits benefiting the various programs at the Center. To find out more information about upcoming programs, store hours, guest artists, or to donate to the Center, please visit www.clarkstoncommunitycenter.org.

HUGH LATTA, FASID Q 1.

Congratulations on your 2017 ASID National Lifetime Achievement Award! This is a national and premier award for personal achievement in the interior design profession, exemplary contributions to our design community, and outstanding commitment to ASID. This award is limited to past ASID Society-level chairs, in which you served as National AID Education Chairman and Fellow of ASID Chairman. What did you see within ASID that kept you involved for so many years?

A I was a member of the student chapter at the University of Florida prior to coming to Atlanta, where I became a member of the Georgia ASID Chapter (AID at that time). Over the years, I found that ASID not only gives integrity and validity to our profession by endorsing state registration and accreditation of the design programs in the schools (once FIDER, now CIDA), but also provides CEUs for our membership, and makes the general public aware of the value of our profession. Also, the interaction with colleagues locally and nationally has been most rewarding.

Q 2.

As Founder and Chairman of Design Continuum Inc., your hospitality design projects ranged from Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton Hotels, to the captivating Grove Park Inn, to Disney World Hotels and Cruise Lines. Over the years, what were a few of your favorite hotel projects? What made these experiences so unique?

A My favorite projects have been the ones where I had to learn something new in order to execute the design, as was the case when we restored The Grove Park Inn. I had little knowledge of the Arts and Crafts movement when we began the project and by the end, we had recovered and discovered many of the original items which over the years had left the property. Today it houses one of the largest collection of Arts and Crafts furnishings in the world, and The National Arts and Crafts Conference is held there every year. Another interesting project for me was the North Hampton Golf Club in Akita, Japan. Architects and Designers are the most revered professions in Japan. I had to learn their customs, including being trained by Shinto priests for the groundbreaking and opening ceremonies. Our client spared no expense in the furnishings, and wanted the best of American arts - including Elsworth Kelley paintings, Chihuly glass, the largest Ed Moulthrop bowl, as well as original Picasso ceramics. Another favorite was the Disney Magic Cruise ship. We completed 11 projects for Disney and Disney, Imagineering usually provided the designers with “scripts (directions), but on this project I was invited to join the Imagineers in their design charrette to determine the image for the ship, which was based on the French deco Normandy Cruise Ship. co n tin u e d n ex t p a g e - 25 - SPRING 2018 | GEORGIA CHAPTER 2018 Spring Magazine.indd 25

Q 3.

As you were completing your master’s degree at Cranbrook Academy of Art, what compelled you to choose your thesis on hotel design and to continue into this design market?

A I realized that hotel design incorporated both residential design (guest rooms and suites) as well as commercial design (restaurants, lobbies, cocktail lounges, offices, etc). Also, I realized that the guest rooms have to be redesigned every 3 to 4 years, and public spaces every 7 to 8 years. This automatically becomes repeat work for the designer if you please the client. We never had a marketing position at Design Continuum Inc. because our philosophy was to go the extra mile at the end of the project, and then your client does the marketing for you. 75% of our work at DCI was by referral or for repeat clients.

Q

4.

Serenbe is high on every designer’s list of favorite places to visit in Georgia. The true community there is bringing back connection to one another, to nature, and to art. You happen to be one of these locals now, and serve on the Serenbe Artists in Residence Board. What does this entail?

A Although I don’t live in Serenbe, but on an old fishing lake a few miles away, I find myself very involved with all the activities there including arts, music, theater and dance. The Artists in Residence Program invests in artists of all disciplines (painters, composers, poets, dancers, spoken word artists, etc). It provides time and space necessary for creation of new work, as well as public programing to bring the public in close contact with creative processes and practices.

5.

Q

You have been very involved in the arts outside of design as well, serving on the Board for the Alliance Theater and Lee Harper Dance Company, as well as co-founding the Young Careers High Museum of Art and the Current Historians Atlanta History Center – how did history, poetry, dance, theater, and art influence your designs?

A Having grown up in a historic town in Mississippi and in a family where there was an architect, a men’s clothing designer, a ladies hat designer and an amateur artist, I have always been inquisitive of creative people and I think that has influenced and molded my approach to design.

6.

Q If you could live in another city outside the US, what would it be?

A I would probably live in Sydney, Australia, because of its blend of outstanding contemporary and beautifully preserved turn of the century architecture and interiors. It has a very cosmopolitan atmosphere of well-dressed friendly professional individuals who are most welcoming to outsiders. The temperate climate, the charming neighborhoods on the water, its cleanliness, and its manageable traffic are all inviting factors.

7.

Q

You were one of the original members of ASID in 1975, our design community so many of us are indebted to. How have you seen ASID evolve into what it is today?

A When I was the National AID Education Chairman, and prior to the merger of AID and NSID, these two organizations along with NCIDQ (educators) met and decided that our profession needed an accrediting organization. This accreditation would ensure the quality of graduates and be a precursor for state registration of designers. That action resulted in FIDER, followed by the formation of ASID, which then lead to state licensing of interior designers. All of this is the result of many hard working dedicated individuals.

Q What is one NON - design hobby you enjoy?

8.

A I enjoy gardening and cooking. I was a member of a gourmet dining club for years where each of us was solely responsible for preparing dinners in our homes. This past holiday season, Glenn and I baked 30 FALA signature rum cakes for friends. My specialties include savory okra pancakes, an old fashioned real pound cake, and a French toast breakfast casserole.

Q 9.

In addition to your work at Design Continuum, you taught as Adjunct Professor of Design at Auburn University for 18 years. Was teaching design something you knew you were going to commit to for that long? What drew you to teach?

A Between my two years at graduate school, I taught interior design in summer school at Memphis State University and realized that I enjoyed teaching. When I was approached to participate in the College of Architecture at Auburn, where they brought in professionals as Adjunct Professors to work with the students, I accepted the position thinking that I would do it for one semester. However, this continued for 18 years, when I finally gave it up to become Chairman of the FIDER Board (the hours at DCI and FIDER did not permit me to do all three).

10.

How have you seen hospitality design evolve in the last decade or so?

A The emergence of the boutique hotel, both in style and size, has probably been one of the greatest changes. Also, the providing of space in common areas for people to congregate with their laptops and interact with each other. Check-in kiosks are available now as well, rather than front desk service. New York. This is reinventing luxury hospitality with smaller guestrooms rich in textures and technology that function in very efficient ways. He has moved the sink into the actual guestroom in a beautiful sculptural form. I think a lot of his elements will be seen in future properties.
