Hello, ASID Georgia: It has been an honor to serve as president of the ASID Georgia chapter. The experience has been highly rewarding and challenging, on both a personal and professional level. Having begun this journey over 13 years ago, I have been fortunate enough to engage with so many incredibly talented members of the community. More importantly, I know as an individual what ASID has given me - a sense of belonging. I have found that given today’s technology and its overwhelming influence in our everyday lives, we often forget the simple pleasures of personal engagement. Recognizing that every member is crucial to our continued growth and development; going forward, our goal must be to move membership beyond the transactional, we must instead inspire each other to strive to develop lifelong participation in ASID. I encourage each of you to become a force within the Design community, to seek every moment that encourages a person-to-person engagement and continue to share our vision with as many people as possible; for without your voice, we become just another organization. As always, the objective of ASID remains the same; to support, promote, and advance the Interior Design profession and communicate the impact of design on the human experience. On behalf of our 2017-2018 Board of Directors and myself, thank you for all the support you have shown during my presidency. My best, Chris Socci ASID Georgia Chapter | 2017-2018 President

Hello, ASID Georgia! I feel so privileged to be able to serve as your ASID Georgia chapter president for 2018-2019! I found when I started my own firm seven years ago that many potential clients would ask me if I was an ASID designer. At the time, I was an NCIDQ accredited professional, a LEED AP, and registered in the state of Georgia, so I asked the question that many of you probably have – Why ASID? The “WHY” is different for all of us, but I believe this organization provides all of us a collaborative environment that works to promote the value of interior design. In this fast paced world of next day delivery, TV design shows, and internet sites full of images that cause people to challenge the value that we, as designers, bring to the table, it is of paramount importance to associate ourselves with an organization that continues to advocate on our behalf. We must never cease in our efforts to educate others about the impact that our designs have on the human experience. No matter what your reason for joining ASID, just remember you BELONG! We as a board realize the significance of our positions and look forward to serving our membership this next year. We encourage you to engage with us and become involved. Please ask any of our board members or ASID volunteers about opportunities to help plan for our future, or reach out to us at the email addresses listed on this page. Thank you to all our Industry Partners who made the Annual meeting at the beautiful Mannington showroom possible and for all our members who have shown up in support of the new board of directors. Warm Regards, Kristin Kong ASID Georgia Chapter | 2018-2019 President

WELL BUILDING STA NDARD continued

The WELL Building Standard® v1 is the first building standard to focus exclusively on the health and wellness of the people in buildings. WELL v1 is a performance-based system for measuring and certifying features of the built environment that impact human health and well-being, through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind. It marries best practices in design and construction with evidence-based medical and scientific research – harnessing the built environment as a vehicle to support human health and well-being. WELL v1 is grounded in a body of research that explores the connection between the buildings where we spend more than 90 percent of our time, and the health and wellness impacts on us as occupants. WELL Certified™ spaces can help create a built environment that improves the nutrition, fitness, mood, sleep patterns and performance of its occupants. WELL v1 sets performance requirements in seven categories, or Concepts, relevant to occupant health and well-being in the built environment. Each WELL Feature is designed to address issues that impact the health, comfort or knowledge of occupants through design, operations and behavior. The WELL Building Standard v1 can be applied across many real estate sectors, and the current WELL v1 is optimized for commercial and institutional office buildings. Pilot Programs are now available for new market sectors including retail, multifamily residential, education, restaurant and commercial kitchen projects.

WHY WELL? A WELL Certified project has the potential to add measurable value to the health, wellbeing, productivity, and happiness of building occupants. By placing people at the heart of design, construction, operations and development decisions, we have the ability to add both monetary and intangible value to real estate assets, generate

savings in personnel costs, and enhance the human experience, health and well-being. Prioritizing WELL also provides the opportunity to stand at the forefront of innovation in the sustainable and healthy building movement. WELL Certification is positioned to provide added value for commercial and Institutional projects. Physical workplace is one of the top three factors affecting performance and job satisfaction. Personnel costs significantly outweigh the costs for design and construction and maintenance and operations. Addressing occupant health channels resources towards reducing the largest line item in the 30-year costs of a building – the personnel – offering a meaningful return on investment.

WHO IS BEHIND WELL? Pioneered by Delos®, the WELL Building Standard® is the culmination of seven years of rigorous research in collaboration with leading physicians, scientists and industry professionals. WELL is administered by the International WELL Building Institute® (IWBI®), a public benefit corporation whose mission is to improve human health and well-being through the built environment. IWBI has joined forces with Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), the same organization that administers LEED certification, to provide third-party certification for WELL.

The WELL Accredited Professional (WELL AP) credential signifies knowledge in human health and wellness in the built environment, and specialization in the WELL Building Standard. To become a WELL AP, all candidates must pass the WELL AP exam. Developed using GBCI’s rigorous test development best practices, the exam is designed to test a candidate’s competency to perform the duties of a WELL AP. The exam is based on the expertise of leading practitioners in the field of design, health and wellness in the built environment. Learn more about the WELL AP credential and register for the exam at wellcertified.com/well-ap. For information about educational programs and workshops that introduce the key elements and requirements of the WELL Building Standard, please visit wellcertified.com/learn.

The American Society of Interior Designers headquarters office is the first space in the world to achieve both Platinum Level Certification for the WELL Building Standard™ (WELL™) under WELL v1 and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), under the LEED ID+C rating system – the highest recognition awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the International WELL Building Institute™ (IWBI™). The office space, designed by Perkins+Will, incorporates innovative health and wellness design features of today, and has sustainability as a central philosophy.

PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVE: the value of WELL As an interior designer and university educator, I strive to leverage the built environment to assist people who are experiencing homelessness to recover effectively. Maintaining personcentered design values and priorities is necessary so that I can provide places that attend to people’s complex physical, emotional and cognitive needs from an informed point of view. For this reason, I became a WELL accredited professional in 2017, and now teach others to prepare for the exam as a WELL Educator with ASID. To my knowledge, no other accreditation centers its focus on design for the whole person as completely as WELL, with a certification system that backs up its requirements with the solid foundation of empirical research. The WELL standard provides a design practitioner not only with a tangible set of standards that can help ensure well-being for a project, but also evidence about why design is so important to our culture. As ASID identifies, Design, in fact, Impacts Lives, and the WELL Standard is an effective means through which to put these values into action.

Design Excellence in Outdoor Living

SPONSORED CONTENT

Brown Jordan® Outdoor Kitchens helps designers create beautiful outdoor living spaces Mitch Slater, president of Danver & Brown Jordan® Outdoor Kitchens, provides insight on outdoor living trends and the importance of working with durable products from industry leaders.

What were some of the outdoor luxury trends for 2018?

We are seeing an increase in indoor/outdoor entertainment rooms, which is different than an outdoor kitchen. Designers are creating spaces for outdoor entertaining that look like an extension of the home’s interior. Homeowners still have spaces open to the elements for fire pits and water features, but designers are adding more walls and shaded areas for year-round entertaining. While outdoor entertainment rooms are more prevalent in Florida and California, the concept is gaining traction across the country, including Georgia and the Carolinas. Our cabinets are the popular with designers because, although they’re made of stainless steel, the powder coat colors and realistic wood grain finishes give them the appearance of indoor cabinets. Over 85% of our sales are powder coated, giving designers seemingly limitless creative options, while protecting the cabinetry from the outdoor elements.

The ASA-D2

What new outdoor design concepts do you think will emerge in the future?

Not everyone wants traditional design, and designers want to present options to their clients. We evolve and innovate based on feedback from the design community. For example, we manufacture the ASA-D2 in partnership with architect and designer Daniel Germani and Dekton by Consentino. It’s a more contemporary, freestanding kitchen, and it was the winner of the 2017 Interior Design Magazine’s Best of the Year Award. From that Euro-inspired design, we developed our newlylaunched Tecno line, which is also very sleek and modern.

What is the typical life span of an outdoor kitchen? What should designers look for when selecting durable products for their clients? Stainless steel is, of course, durable and powder coating aids in protecting the longevity of the stainless steel. Both are considered environmentally-friendly and will last for years. In fact, we offer a limited lifetime warranty on the cabinetry and 7 years on the powder coat finishes. Our kitchens are found in every imaginable location from the desert to the ocean-front and hold up great – even uncovered and exposed to the elements. The cabinets are not affected by water damage and mold, a common problem with other outdoor kitchens.

How much customization can be afforded to designers who may be working with clients who have specific tastes and ideas?

People want to design their outdoor kitchens to reflect their personalities. They are looking for something unique. We provide countless design options – dozens of cabinet styles in hundreds of sizes, designer colors, realistic wood-grain powder coat finishes, and a variety of door style options. Our philosophy is to address the space, not just cooking. For us, the process is just like designing an indoor kitchen that can withstand the elements of the outdoors.

Over the years we have created specialty cabinets when people needed something custom. For instance, we are constantly adding cabinets to handle new outdoor appliances. Every project is built to order. There is no stock product or online sales and we don’t sell directly to the homeowner. We focus on the designers, architects and builders who

work with clients looking for best-in-class products and will value their beauty and longevity. About us Brown Jordan® Outdoor Kitchens are manufactured by Danver Stainless Outdoor Kitchens, the industry’s premier stainless-steel cabinet manufacturer for over 20 years. Brown Jordan® Outdoor Kitchens offers a complete line of stainless steel outdoor cabinets designed to fit most outdoor appliances including grills, bartending centers and refrigerators.
