Security 50 Rankings proves yet again the old maxim that figures speak louder than words. All Educational Centers must be secured by all means necessary with the help of innovative Security Technologies like IP Surveillance technology, Vehicle Tracking System, RFID and Biometric Technology. Fire sprinklers and ancillary products need a timely upgrade.

Safe City Initiative

Burdwan Blast Case

Fire Safety Awareness

The government needs to put Safe Cities project on priority basis as Indian cities need to be secured from terrorists and extremists. According a to a PWC report, “The megacity policing plan was introduced by the government under the MPF scheme in 2005 with an allocation of US $ 57 million . By 2010, it had achieved considerable maturity as the system was used for ensuring the successful and event-free Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The MHA has provided further impetus to the megacity policing programme by allocating $ 72million for the period 2013-17. The state governments are the primary drivers for city surveillance initiatives. They are also responsible for overall funding. However, they can request funds from the MHA as needed. The state government funds can be pooled in from city municipalities, state governments and MP/MLA funds.

National Investigation Agency (NIA) is in news for lot of proactive action in their drive against sleeper cells of terror outfits. Key suspect in the Burdwan blast Shahnoor Alam, alleged to be the financial brain of Jamaat-ulMujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terror group, was arrested by the NIA with the help of central security agencies from Nalbari district of Assam. NIA, whose probe into the October 2 blast received a boost after the arrest of another accused Sajid, had been tailing Alam for quite sometime after his name surfaced in the call records and interrogation of the arrested accused person. The investigating agency had last month arrested his wife but Alam had been on the run since the blast. The National Investigation Agency has been created in pursuance of the enactment of the NIA Act, 2008, and it is mandated, at the national level, to investigate and prosecute offences affecting the sovereignty, security and integrity of India, friendly relations with foreign States and offences under Acts enacted to implement international treaties, agreements, conventions and resolutions of the United Nations and other international organizations and for matters connected therewith or incidental there to.

I am related to Security Industry as a System Integrator and closely monitoring the development on ground in terms of Fire Safety projects. The recent fire hazards in Mumbai and other cities in India exposed the level of awareness we have regarding fire hazards. Fire safety awareness is a crucial factor in avoiding firerelated incidents, and businesses, workers and visitors to their facilities need to equip themselves with basic safety knowledge, as well as ensure that the systems protecting them are appropriately designed for the risk they are protecting against.

Parag Mehta, Mumbai

India’s Opportunity in Security Sector I have all the appreciation for interview of Innovator Dr. Tinku Acharya , founder and Director of Videonetics. I hope security industry makes the good use of this opportunity to promote Indian manufacturing in Security Sector.

Corporate News IdenTrust Digital Identities Secure MEDENT’s Electronic Health Records

NEC India Deploys Leading Face Recognition Solution at Lemon Tree Hotels

Hikvision’s Dark Fighter PTZ Nominated as a Finalist

IdenTrustTM(part of HID Global, a worldwide leader in secure identity solutions) today announced that it has been selected by MEDENT to provide IGC PKI certificates, which have been cross-certified to the U.S. Federal Bridge Authority, for MEDENT’s eHR application.

NEC India, a leading network and IT solution provider, completed the deployment of a high performance Face Recognition Solution (FRS) featuring NEC’s world-leading technologies at Lemon Tree groups’ upscale hotel, Lemon Tree Premier, Delhi Airport, New Delhi today, making it the first in the hospitality sector in India to adopt the top-end safety and surveillance systems. Lemon Tree Premier, Delhi Airport is located in the Aerocity Hospitality District near Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Hikvision DS-2DF8223I-A(AEL) delivers full color images in conditions that would defeat conventional monochrome IP cameras and competing low-light cameras. Hikvision’s ultra-low-light surveillance Dark Fighter PTZ camera has been nominated as a finalist for “CCTV Camera Equipment of the Year” in a Security & Fire Excellence Awards.

IdenTrust, CEO, Karen Wendel

IdenTrust will also manage MEDENT’s identity proofing for the issuance of all digital identities. IGC PKI certificates are approved by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) for EPCS compliance and are also compliant with the National Health Architecture guidelines for Directed Exchange. MEDENT is rolling out the IdenTrust IGC PKI certificates to its New York state customers, who are required by New York Education Law Article 137 §6810 to issue all prescriptions for both controlled and non-controlled substances via electronic prescribing by March 27, 2015. The IGC PKI certificates will also be made available to all MEDENT clients in the nine states it supports. Moving to a paperless process allows for the integration of a patient’s health and pharmacy records, minimizes the chance for medication errors, and helps protect against criminal activities such as forging or stealing prescriptions.

22

January 2015

We are excited to bring the cutting-edge NEC face recognition technology to the hospitality sector in India through Lemon Tree Hotels. We have spent 30 years to bring in the level of advancement seen in this technology, which has been globally recognized for its performance and accuracy.

Koichiro Koide, Managing Director, NEC India

Ultimately, what EPCS does is include eHR application owners, like MEDENT, in the workflow for delivering quality patient care. The magnitude of this cannot be understated. Our partnership with MEDENT is a natural extension of our shared commitment to securing eHR applications and the critical purpose they serve.

The solution is deployed with NEC’s partner Target Vision, and intelligently matches faces appearing on the hotel surveillance cameras to a database list of potential security threats provided by local authorities. Additionally, the solution can also be utilized for whitelist management, offering customized service to the VIP guests at the hotel simply by recognizing their faces. The strength of NEC’s face recognition technology lies in its tolerance to poor quality, highly compressed surveillance videos and images. This cutting edge technology can even use poor quality webcam images to produce the highest search results per second, and can recognize altered faces too with a high level of accuracy.

This cutting-edge camera utilizes Hikvision’s industry-leading, ultra-low-light MP lens and is designed specifically to capture sharp color and monochrome images in extreme, low-light conditions.

The result is crystal-clear color images down to 0.0005Lux and the delivery of full color images in conditions that would defeat conventional monochrome IP cameras and competing lowlight cameras. As well as opening up new opportunities for 24-hour CCTV surveillance, it is the ideal replacement for conventional IP network cameras. Hikvision is the world’s largest supplier of video surveillance products and solutions. The company specializes in video surveillance technology, as well as designing and manufacturing a full-line of innovative CCTV and video surveillance products. The product line ranges from cameras and DVRs to video management software. Since its inception in 2001, Hikvision has quickly achieved a leading worldwide market position in the security industry.

Fire Sprinklers and Ancillary Products Play Key Role in Fire Protection Fire sprinklers and Ancillary Products are extensively used worldwide, with over 40 million sprinkler heads fitted each year. In buildings protected by fire sprinklers, over 99% of fires were controlled by fire sprinklers alone. By Editorial Team

A

fire sprinkler or sprinkler head is the component of a fire sprinkler system that discharges water when the effects of a fire have been detected, such as when a predetermined temperature has been exceeded. There are several types of sprinklers: • Quick Response • Standard Response • CMSA (Control Mode Specific Application) • Residential • ESFR (early suppression fast response)

Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) refers to both a concept and a type of sprinkler. “The concept is that fast response of sprinklers can produce an advantage in a fire if the response is accompanied by an effective discharge density--that is, a sprinkler spray capable of fighting its way down through the fire plume in sufficient quantities to suppress the burning fuel package.”The sprinkler that was developed for this concept was created for use in high rack storage. Early suppression fast response

36

January 2015

(ESFR) sprinkler heads were developed in the 1990s to take advantage of the latest fast-response fire sprinkler technology to provide fire suppression of specific high-challenge fire hazards. The sprinklers are specifically designed to fully suppress a fire that is within the design limits of the piping system. Wet Pipe Sprinkler System The Wet Pipe System is the simplest and most common type of fire sprinkler installation. This system employs automatic and closedtype sprinklers heads, which are

connected to a water-filled piping system. The sprinklers contain either a heat-responsive glass bulb or fusible element that prohibits water from discharging from the sprinkler’s orifice. The water is contained until such time as the heat from the fire activates the element, causing its release, allowing the water to discharge to the heat source. Contrary to many perceptions of automatic sprinkler systems, in this type of system, the only sprinklers that will discharge water are those sprinklers who elements have been directly actuated by the fire. Wet systems are frequently installed in factories, warehouses, office buildings, retail stores and residences where the potential for freezing does not exist. Dry Pipe Sprinkler System A Dry Pipe Sprinkler System is a system which employs automatic and closed type sprinkler heads, which are connected to a piping system containing compressed air or nitrogen, rather than water. This type

of system is used where the area being protected will be unable to maintain a constant, year-round temperature of at least 40-degrees Fahrenheit. Water would freeze in the piping, rendering the system inoperable, even causing severe damage should the system components crack or break. The water supply for the system is held back by the dry-pipe valve,

which will only release the water after the evacuation of the air pressure from the system (such as the operation of a sprinkler). The water will then flow into the piping system, and out of the opened sprinklers. Dry Pipe Systems are frequently installed in areas subject to freezing temperatures, such as unheated storage areas, coolers and freezers, unheated parking garages, and loading docks. Preaction Sprinkler System A Preaction Sprinkler System is a system which employs automatic and closed-type sprinkler heads connected to a piping system that contains air (either pressurized or non-pressurized), with a supplemental system of detection serving the same area as the sprinklers. The systems are typically used in applications where the accidental discharge of water would be catastrophic to the usage of occupancy. Preaction Sprinkler Systems are 37

FIRE SECURE

similar to Dry Pipe Systems in that the water is kept from entering the piping valve, in the case a preaction valve. This valve is held closed electrically, only being released by the activation of the detection system (heat or smoke detectors mainly) when an electrical signal is sent to the releasing solenoid valve. The water then fills the pipe, ready for the activation of the sprinkler heads. Preaction systems can be arranged to be activated by only one detection device type, or many. A preaction system can also be combined with a Dry-Pipe System, for use in areas that are unheated, or areas where the occupant requires the water not enter the system prior to the activation of a sprinkler heads. Protection systems can be arranged to be activated by only one detection device type, or many. A preaction system can also be

combined with a Dry-Pipe system, for use in areas that are unheated, or areas where the occupant requires that water not enter the system prior to the activation of a sprinkler. This is called a Double-Interlocked preaction system. This system functions much like a dry-pipe system, however the release water also depends on the activation of the detection devices. Common installations include computer rooms, process control rooms, data storage and telecommunications rooms. Deluge Sprinkler System A Deluge System is a system that employs open-type sprinklers that are connected to a piping system which is connected to a water supply that is kept from filling the pipe until the deluge valve is released by the supplemental detection system. This operates much in the same way as a

preaction system. However, when the deluge valve releases the water to the system, every sprinkler in the system discharges. Deluge Systems provide fast and total wettings of protected areas, and are frequently used in extra-hazard risks such as aircraft hangars, power generating stations, and petrochemical facilities. AFFF Sprinkler System Any type of system – Wet, Dry, Preaction or Deluge – can be adapted to include the injection of AFFF foam concentrate in order to combat high risks such as flammable fuels and alcohol. The primary components added to the sprinkler system riser include bladder tanks to hold the foam concentrate, concentrate control valves to isolate the sprinkler system from the concentrate until activation, and proportion ers (controllers) for mixing the appropriate amount of foam concentrate with the system supply water. Other types of foam/ water systems require similar foam equipment. Clean Agent System These systems utilize deteaction that in turns sets off valuing that introduces to gas (Inergen, FM 200, Halon, CO2, etc) to the protected area. This system looks similar to a wet pipe sprinkler system but instead of being connected to a water supply it is connected to a gas fire extinguishing agent. These systems are utilized primarily in computers rooms, switchgear stations and other areas with sensitive electrical equipment.

Inorganic Growth is Driving the Demand of Fire Sprinklers and Ancillary Products By K. Arul Prakash, Vice President, Business Area – Fire Products, Gunnebo Security Solutions

K. Arul Prakash,

Vice President, Business Area – Fire Products, Gunnebo Security Solutions Overview Inorganic growth is the key factor driving the growth of fire sprinklers and ancillary products of the industry which in turn helps in organizing the segment. For high rises and corporate parks it is compulsory to abide by the fire safety norms that make it mandatory to have fire sprinklers as part of the infrastructure which helps growing the business in India in the long run. To address the safety needs of India’s booming infrastructure industry and growing commercial needs, Gunnebo had recently introduced a new brand under its Fire Fighting Solutions vertical called GILpro. Under this new brand, Gunnebo offers a range of fire extinguishers especially for the commercial building segment, sprinklers and flexible sprinkler hoses (UL & FM approved), kitchen hood protection system and automatic fire suppression system. Innovations Due to ease of installation and

maintenance flexible sprinkler hoses are being used between the overhead water distribution pipes and the sprinkler heads. This is a major shift from the traditional hard pipe drops that earlier plumbing contractors used. Flexi pipes help in reducing the chances of leakage and can help in managing space without hampering the planning and layout of false ceiling and AC ducts etc. Key Verticals The highest demand is seen with commercial buildings, hospitals, hotels and corporate IT parks as it is mandatory for them to comply by the fire safety norms. Quality & Standards The fire sprinklers and flexible sprinkler hoses are imports driven in India. While there are only a few major companies in India which supply genuine and high quality products, due to the ease in imports, lot of traders in the fire business import low quality or counterfeit products and dump into the hands of unwary price seeking contractors. The source of poor quality sprinklers and flexible hoses are supplied by the unorganized fire equipment manufacturing and trading community. Installing a poor quality product leads to enormous complications and revenue loss for the end customer. Even leakages from a couple of sprinklers worth few hundred rupees will result in revenue

loss worth thousands and repairs in false ceiling which will remain an eyesore. In order to prevent this segment from falling into the hands of the unorganized players leading consultants and architects need to play a major role by specifying only leading manufacturers and genuine holders of FM / UL certification. Eg Specifying a braided sprinkler flexible hose with FM certification will ensure peace for both the installers as well as the users. The certification bodies like UL/ FM/LPCB should play a major role in educating specifiers and users and also prevent the import of counterfeits with their approval marks. The certification bodies should work more actively with the govt bodies to initiate strict action on those who endanger the lives and properties by supplying low quality or spurious products. For long term sustainability, organizing the industry is very important. In an industry which is plagued by inconsistency in quality, Gunnebo India adopts a no compromise approach to ensure, each and every product offered by it is qualified to meet the stringent specifications as mentioned in the standards. Backed by a rich global legacy, and seen as a trusted brand name, quality remains central to all new innovations and launches at Gunnebo, with checks at various stages of manufacturing and supply. 39

Campus violence has scarred the academic landscape across the India. As the spectre of urban terror looms large over the world, the list of possible terror targets has lengthened to include university and school institutions. In India, educational institutions have been facing security challenging such as incidents of bullying, theft, physical harassment, ragging, shootouts, anti-social behavior, acid attacks, kidnapping, molestations, vandalism and many more.

From last one decade our focus is to give a value added Identification solutions to the customer. Smart I is developing the products and solutions to keep in mind the requirements of the end user. We have developed the solutions for various Industry ie; Banking, Pharmaceutical, Retail, Education, etc. Key Challenges and Opportunities “The low awareness levels, budget constraints and technical competency levels are the major challenges in this segment. Consistent support from the local administration, state / central government is also required in order to improve the state of electronic security in this segment. Having said that there are many regions in India where there is a lot of thrust from the local authorities. Many state governments have issued directives to the local schools to install cameras in the school vans and buses, observed Atulya Chandra. He further added,”The installation of a security surveillance system also is a selling point for various international schools and colleges as the awareness levels amongst the parents is quite high in this category.”

According to Ashish P. Dhakan, “Threats faced by educational institutes include following points. School Buses: Students are often kidnapped when they are waiting for buses. There are cases wherein school children are run over by school buses or at times molested inside the school bus. Campus & Premises: Theft and vandalism of school property, hooliganism, ragging are a major concern. High vigilance is required as colleges and universities have large campuses with multiple education and administration buildings, sports, art facilities, parking areas and dorms. Continuous check needs to be kept on the fleet of vehicles and scores of people who frequent the premises 24/7.”

Opportunities • Cameras help maintain safety around the campus and discourage and act of misbehavior. Cameras that are placed in a conspicuous way have shown to drastically reduce threats of violence and vandalism • Cameras placed at the entrance help administrative staff monitor visitors • Security cameras deter any kind of criminal activity and theft in parking lots • GPS tracking device allow schools to track and monitor the school bus • Use of surveillance footage helps in identifying individuals who 46

Schools are places for students to learn, to acquire professional and social skills.Schools often double as public places that are open to communities, making the safety and security on campus exceptionally important. Issues like trespassing and theft, bullying, vandalism and injury are happening from time to time. School-aged children are vulnerable and lack awareness when they confront dangers. From this aspect, an advanced and seamless surveillance should be installed on campus, securing a safe learning environment for children.

have committed crimes like sexual harassment, bullying Remote monitoring of even the remote places of the campus becomes easier as video streams can be sent over the internet.

“Colleges and universities face a unique combination of security challenges that go beyond providing strictly educational services. The key challenges include budget allocation and utilization of funds for security infrastructure upgrade, availability of skilled persons, and smooth operations. The other challenge may include risk of vandalism/breaking. Personal privacy is also a major concern before the authorities before implementing video surveillance solutions, suggested Yogesh B. Dutta. He further opined, “The opportunities are also immense as the security is the prime concern, which is of prime importance. An institute, which deployed enhanced security makes a strong statement for the aspirants. The importance of HD is gaining importance as the increased number of incidences are reported to the police which require strong evidence.”

Nevertheless, due to rising awareness, educational institutes have started realizing the significance of having proper security arrangement and corrective measures is being put into place, although a little slowly. The goal of surveillance at educational institutions is to provide both the privacy and security in the least intrusive possible way. The greater good of surveillance is to act as a deterrent to any kind of crime.

“Safety and security becoming one of the major concerns today, video surveillance systems have been accepted for their value across verticals. Out of which needless to say educational institutions top the list,” observed Sudhindra Holla. He further added,”Educational facilities are not exempted from offences such as vandalism, violence or burglary. Apart from these, schools constantly face issues of bullying and corporal punishments and some schools are seeing crimes such as illegal MMS and exploitation of students.” “Schools are places for students to learn, to acquire professional and social skills.Schools often double as public places that are open to communities, making the safety and security on campus exceptionally important. Issues like trespassing and theft, bullying, vandalism and injury are happening from time to time. School-aged children are vulnerable and lack awareness when they confront dangers. From this aspect, an advanced and seamless surveillance should be installed on campus, securing a safe learning environment for children,” observed

William Ku, Vice President, International Business Division, VIVOTEK. “While India has made significant progress in ensuring access to education but simultaneously education sector lacks security and compromise on safety issues of students. The key challenges faced by education sector is maintaining and monitoring the video clippings. Furthermore, the delivery of high definition IP video images should help the school authorities to tackle a variety of issues that affect universities in a completely secure way allowing greater protection from crimes. Secondly, universities should also have legally permitted internal set up of operating surveillance system, observed Subhashis Gupta. He further added, “Many companies offer digital CCTV systems. The educational systems should take advantage of the benefits of digital CCTV and should migrate to IP-based solutions from analog. We offer much such video surveillance solutions; identity based networking, secure mobility solutions. Moreover, we also provide students and staff with secure

network access from anywhere in the campus at any time which includes roaming wireless access.” According to Manmohan Kumar, Sales Director India - Security Division at Rosslare Enterprises, “I can’t see any challenges as Education Sector itself can be a big market for Security. These days CCTVs are bare necessities for any organization and Schools and College are no different and required more attention. If tapped properly, there are only opportunities in terms of Video Surveillance, Access Control and Attendance System. Parents are concerned about each and every activity of their wards – when they are boarding the bus, when they are entering the school and when again they are boarding the bus for coming back. Schools are implementing GSM Based Systems to provide SMS to Parents for all these activities. Manual attendance is also getting replaced by Biometric Attendance and there will be least chance of proxy punching. So if we can talk about an integrated solution for any School or College, there are big opportunities facing the

Security Industry, just solution needs to be presented. According to Karan Kanal,” The major challenges faced in this segment is Security of Children not only inside the school but it starts from the time they leave home & till they are back to home. To cater to this various solutions that can be offered are tracking system, Access Control & Attendance solutions for children, Visitor, Vendor, Contractor Management system to track the people visiting the schools for various reasons, canteen management solutions for eliminating all cash transactions inside the schools, library management for keeping complete details for books maintained by schools are few solutions that can be offered to todays growing requirements of education sector.” According to Ranjeet Sinha following are the opportunities and Challenges. Challenges: • Requirement of an open environment fit for educational growth. • Non-organized in terms of security. • Security is not the priority and therefore low expense on security • Reliance on manpower • Manpower is not vetted and antecedents not checked before employment • Easy access to contraband material and ease of entry and exit from the premises • Non organized and vetted transport system • Lack of trained staff and counselors for problem detection and mitigation Opportunities: Educational institutes have enough control over the campus environment that providing security can be relatively easy compared to most other types of 47

properties. The institutecan control all activities throughout the day. They can establish strict code of conduct and mandate use technology for granting controlled access to their premises, checking of belongings, monitoring of their premises including assets moving outside like busses etc. for pre-empting of incidents and responding to them. However, for all these to work, there has to be a comprehensive and well thought out security plan which should be implemented by the institute. The correct mix of “Security Processes, Unobtrusive Technology augmented by Trained Manpower and a tested Response Mechanism” is the right answer to securing the institutes and keeping the people safe. And, as the security setup is still in nascent stage in the education sector, there are ample opportunities in all areas of security for development. “The prime challenge remains with installation of ‘Security Products’. Schools nowadays have CCTV cameras installed for surveillance. However, these cameras are not used for larger monitoring purpose. The critical aspect is to actively bar rather than passively monitoring. CCTV’s are largely installed at central locations such as entry and exit points and classrooms etc., not at the entire site. It is imperative to have the entire premise under CCTV surveillance. Areas such as playgrounds should also be brought under a close watch to ensure safe and secure surroundings. Even products such as metal detectors are not used to the optimal level. Retro- fitting is another major challenge. This technology is often brought into practice in the absence of proper IT infrastructure. Moreover, schools are not equipped with LAN, observed Rajeev Sharma. Innovative solutions “In order to provide a complete 48

January 2015

security solution we would suggest integration of access control, attendance management system and the CCTV surveillance inside the premises as well as at the perimeter. Providing secure access to parents to view their children remotely is one of the innovative features which the schools are looking at. Video Analytics is another application that helps to increase operator efficacy, and increases automation,” elaborated Atulya Chandra. He further stated, “Honeywell Security is a technology leader in this industry and has a complete range of integrated security solutions that can cater to the needs of all categories of educational institutions. The latest addition to this basket is an extensive range of high performance mobile DVRs and cameras specifically designed to offer comprehensive surveillance solution to the transportation vertical.” “We at Hikvision have wide range of CCTV & Video surveillance products that serves the purpose of Educational sector. Hikvision surveillance solutions provide overall university perimeter security and a view over campus main

entrance gate, grounds, parking area, and cafeteria facility. To maximize benefits and minimize constraints Hikvision analog solution allows security personnel optimal video images, and fulfills its chief solution requirement: great resolution,” informed Ashish P. Dhakan. He further added, ”Hikvision PTZ camera with a 20x optical zoom feature provides coverage in its entirety and allows to accurately identify individuals. Hikvision Smart IR cameras provides security even during the night time thus making and educational institute safe and secure 24/7.” “Educational institutions are seeking a total security package to guard against all threats – unauthorized entry, vandalism, unsafe parking lots and random acts of violence, said Yogesh B. Dutta. He further explained, “Technology has developed apace and innovations in systems suchas CCTV, access control and fire detection, as well as the ability oforganizations to integrate these technologies for better management and control as part of Automation requirement. This provides colleges and universities with a greater opportunity to deliver a safe and pleasant studying and living

environment for staff and students.” “Video surveillance as a security measure is a force multiplier on campuses as it deters crime, prevents vandalism, monitors parking lots, aids in investigations and implementation of university policies, and allows remote access. Apart from emergencies, archived video can also be used to provide evidence in disciplinary and can discourage smoking, drug use and fighting amongst students,” explained Yogesh B. Dutta. He further elaborated, “Video surveillance and video analytics systems also allow crowd behavior recognition. An IP video surveillance system using video analytics can identify a variety of misdemeanors – be it a drunken person entering the campus, students bunking classes, disturbing the library environment etc.” According to Sudhindra Holla, “Axis has products to address specific needs of wide variety of users. These products enable remote access to video at any number of branch offices from a single location. The complete system is easily connected to the existing network infrastructure and computers, thus

keeping installation and maintenance costs low.” AXIS P33 series (the indoor AXIS P3367-V Network Camera and the outdoor-ready AXIS P3367-VE model), are both vandal-resistant and are suitable for any application that requires video surveillance coverage of a large area or extremely high image detail in a limited area such as school halls and campuses. AXIS M50 series is another new addition to the product line, it is the world’s smallest, ceiling mount pan/ tilt/zoom dome cameras. This camera offers authorities a highly discreet and affordable solution for remotely monitoring indoor areas such as class rooms, lobbies, cafeterias and libraries, to more effectively manage one or more locations and improve security. AXIS M50 cameras have a sleek and compact design thus enabling discreet, high-quality 360° surveillance in HDTV. A built-in microphone also allows monitoring for unusual noises during off-hours to trigger a security alarm. The cameras also enable users to monitor a

site seamlessly from a remote location by allowing them to pan, tilt and zoom the camera to gain a 360° view. “With an advanced surveillance system, school staff can perform security networking right on campus, and police or security can do so remotely. If a suspicious person or object is detected, the alarm will trigger, mobilizing real-time assistance. Early detection of a dangerous situation on campus significantly increases the likelihood of prevention,” informed William Ku. He further explained, “For example, incidents during break times when there were large amount of students moving between classes happen all the time. Fisheye cameras with wide angle field of view and discreet form factor can perform seamless and comprehensive monitoring at hallways and stairs. The two-way audio function of camera enables the communication between the control site and the monitored site when communication is required. More uniquely, the surveillance cameras, with video software integrated, can be leveraged to realize the distant learning applications.” According to Subhashis Gupta, “Allied Telesis has already launched its latest software driven network solution - Allied Telesis Management Framework (AMF). The objective of AMF is to automate the network operations of LAN networks. It will not only help enterprises and institutions in reducing their CAPEX and OPEX but ensure also will ensure smooth operation of various services. “He further added, “One of the main advantages of SDN is the promise of centralized management that treats the network as a single virtual device. AMF achieves this and more. An entire network can be managed from any single device, through a simple and intuitive CLI. 49

Configuration and firmware files are automatically and regularly backed up and can automatically regenerate failed devices, and configuration changes can be made on multiple devices simultaneously. These features enable AMF to decrease network operating expenses, by reducing the skill and time required to maintain the network. “ According to Manmohan Kumar, “Innovations like introducing UHF Long Range Readers for taking the entry of students at the main gate itself are getting popular. Rosslares UHF Reader AY-U900 provides a range of 12 mtr and can read multiple tags at a time. Once the groups of students entering the premise, UHF Reader installed at the main gate will take the entry of all the students carrying UHF cards with them which can be used as their I-Cards as well. Readers are also getting installed with the Buses so that attendance can be market at the time of boarding and de-boarding the bus. The system can be integrated with a GSM Based Solution so send an SMS to the parents once their ward get authorized at different readers at different time.” He further suggested, “With the higher education and competitive exams it has been found that there are lots of proxy cases where someone else is attending the exam for money. A Biometric Fingerprint Registration of candidates at the time of enrollment and verifying at the time of exam can stop this immediately. It has already been started with some agencies who are taking the responsibilities of enrolling the candidates biometrically and verifying them when required. Rosslare offers one of the best Biometric Solution called Match On Card where fingerprint is getting stored on the card for 1:1 matching and can be one of the best solution for this kind of scenario.” “Innovative Solutions offered in 50

terms of security is a Single System taking care for Access Management, Tracking, Time attendance, Visitor management, Canteen management, Library Management in integration with IP Surveillance system can be offered in educations sector. EINS Technologies with its Ultimate Edition a single point software with its modular approach is an ideal solutions being targeted for Educations sector. The best part is that EINS – Ultimate Edition can also be integrated with School ERP Systems with RFID or Biometrics Solutions to provide & management Students database single handedly & centrally, suggested Karan Kanal. According to Ranjeet Sinha, “The main requirement is to be able to monitor and respond to any situation both on and off premises. There are various solutions available for automation in education sector. On premises equipment like IP based integrated access control, surveillance and vehicle management system (screening and LPR) to ensure that only authorized personnel and

vehicles enter the premises and personal screening systems to check for any contraband items. Access control system also helps in ensuring “No child left behind” by keeping an accurate count of students and staff on premises. Surveillance of critical areas is essential to preempt any incident. IP based surveillance system can also be utilized to grant limited access to parents, especially for infants and small children, to keep a track of their children. Residential areas should also be covered using access control and surveillance. This also helps in automated centralized lockdown in case of any emergency. Off the premises, a mix of on-board surveillance systems with live streaming, passenger counter and GPS tracker for real time monitoring should be utilized to secure students.” He further elaborated, “Also, the network has to be secure enough to ensure that no data is leaked or is accessed in an unauthorized manner for nefarious or fraudulent activities. The automation shall only work efficiently

if detailed processes have been laid down for all security related operations including collection of child from the premises, wardens/lady wardens in school busses, verification of all staff and a proper response plan including post incident investigations. Officials have to be made accountable for any incident and strict action should be taken for withholding information related to any incident.” “For institutes related to higher studies, on premises processes and automation should be utilized to secure the premises and react to any incident, concluded Ranjeet Sinha, “School, College and University campuses require a unique set of security and safety solutions that balance individualized needs while staying mindful of budgets. G4S specializes in developing individualized solutions for specific campus environments while providing qualified personnel and state-of-the-art technology. G4S compliments the usage of security products such as Physical and Logical Access Control System, Fire Detection & Alarm System, Intruder Alarm System etc. Beyond safety, the company also provides a range of innovative solutions specific to the education sector, such as automated library, canteen management and mass notification across campus, informed observed Rajeev Sharma.

This product has dual technology which makes it way ahead of the existing solutions. This product is compatible to both the RFID and the GPS technologies as well,” said Shefali Sinha. She further added, “This product is ideally suited to the education vertical, all the educational institutions kinder gardens, schools and colleges can adopt this hassle free remedy. The concept is within the premises the child can be tracked with the help of Active RFID technology, which can read up to 80 meters without obstacle. So once we define the zones for RFID across the designated area it is easy to track the child’s location eg. Classroom, Library, Canteen etc.” “The RFID Card can also work as the students ID-Card, Bus Pass, Library Membership Card, Sports Club Card other such groups which only permit an authorized entry and rules out the usage of multiples ID-Cards, explained

Shefali Sinha.” She further informed, “The moment child walks out of the area secured by RFID, the tracking through GPS enables itself which means round the clock tracking and monitoring of child.Once integrated with our solution this combined technology can do wonders. The moment child boards the bus the parents would get the SMS alert. The ID-Card shall read the entry inside the bus. Again as the child enters the school this can be used as the attendance marker, the parents and the school again would get the information that the child is within the premises.” “The child can thus stay under surveillance 24X7. Once the child is out of the campus and boarding back to their homes then too SMS alert can be shot their parents. Also the parents can get an alert a stop before their child is about to arrive and they can reach their before to pick them up. The track history can also been recalled to find out route diversion if any and can also shoot an alert. If the child isn’t travelling by the school bus the GPS tracking takes over and it will be very easy to

He further elaborated, “We also provide exclusive incident-reporting, video monitoring and risk-mitigation software solutions that enhance security program effectiveness. The software has various module to manage different functions of school/colleges ie; Attendance Management, Library Management, Class Management, etc. Access Control Solution for highly secured Offices: - For highly secured area like Principle office, Accounts Dept, Examination Dept. etc. need a very strong security system because these are the nervous system of any institute. Smart I offer the access control solutions for these areas where Card reader/ Biometric reader will be placed outside the door and controller will be either

in server room/inside the room which controls the door locks. The advantage of this architecture is, that door will be not open by any unauthorized user in any condition even reader got damaged. Business Intelligence According to Atulya Chandra, “Video analytics is increasingly being used to see which areas children are spending more time and accordingly design their schedules. Analytics also helps in counting number of children entering and exit the classroom and alerting the authorities in case of any emergency. Schools also give an access to the parents so that parents can also monitor and are aware of their child’s whereabouts in the school and in the bus” “IP cameras can be used to send and receive data over a computer network. These advanced technologies provide educational institutions with the additional benefits of remote monitoring and robust storage capabilities. footage, which are rich in vital and detailed information. It also enables the authorities to utilize the security cameras as a video conferencing tool. The cameras are used to transmit video, while audio is transmitted through a regular telephone line. This enables not only virtual staff meetings across campuses, but also allows for parent/ teacher meetings - parents can actually join the meeting from any campus that is convenient for them,” suggested Aditya Khemka. He further concluded, “The cameras can also help to improve behaviour of the students, improve productivity of students and teachers. It can also help in observing the class behaviour and record the footage for future use.” According to William Ku, “In addition to security purpose, the surveillance system with intelligent features can be further leveraged as tool to provide business intelligence. VIVOTEK has introduced its VIVOITEK Application Development Platform (VADP) earlier this year. It is an open platform for integrating video analytic functionality within its cameras. Several intelligent features, such as object counting, line detection, field detection, face detection, and heat map, among others, can be directly installed in VIVOTEK cameras.”

According to Subhashis Gupta, “The tremendous growth in the adoption of applications, BYOD concept, and social sites- has emerged as a serious threat towards information security. The institutions are now very much concerned for the security of their data and information and are continuously implementing policies to secure the same.”

for some small to mediumsized companies, the capability to tailor-make certain unique features in systems for different projects is also required. Developing integrated systems, which are ready to use for different projects, is not only a buzzword but also exactly what is happening right now for the most profitable companies in security. Keen Yao, International Marketing Director of Hikvision Digital Technology pointed out, “Almost all the big suppliers give total solutions. Hikvision, we also are a total solution provider. Our R&D resources make Hikvision very powerful in different vertical markets. We have seven vertical markets — we call them Seven Stars. For different vertical markets we have different solutions that combine almost all security functions, including access control, alarm systems, and surveillance systems. So this is Hikvision’s strategy.” Tim Shen, Marketing Director for Overseas Business Center at Dahua Technology continued, “We are also in the transition stage from device to solutions development. the IP/IT-based companies, such as VIVOTEK and GeoVision, have maintained steady growth over the years and are active in the market. We predict that in the near future, there will be more corporate consolidation among Asian companies. The security market is still full of opportunities. Some small to mediumsized Taiwanese and Korean companies are striving to find their own “blue ocean” to differentiate themselves from Chinese companies. EverFocus also provided a good example here. The company is ready to demonstrate its capacity to develop an integrated security system to its clients, too. Security 50 SetS trendS for 2015 Migration froM Device to SySteMS Axis Communications also see this trend towards solutions. We have broadened our offering for small and medium-sized installations. Axis network cameras and software can now be offered as an overall solution adapted to end user needs. For an overall solution for mid-sized Johan Paulsson, CTO, Axis installations, for example in school environments Communications and in the retail segment, Axis recently launched video recorders. The recorder includes three different server solutions, which are pre-installed with management software and configured to seamlessly match Axis’ wide range of network cameras. Also, the physical access control market is well-suited to Axis’ long-term growth strategy. The investment is part of our ambition to broaden the global offering in security solutions and advance cooperation with partners around the world. The solution is offered in the U.S. and Europe through Axis’ well-established network of distributors and partners. For the box moving business, the trend is going toward solutions type of business. In the past, there were many different vendors in the market, such as camera manufacturers, VMS providers, and systems integrators. However, since the margin has been squeezed, there Steve Ma, EVP, VIVOTEK is no room for multiple vendors. So, the trend is that we need to build total solutions for customers. It should be easy to use, have lower total cost of ownership, be very easy to install and very easy to maintain. That is what we are planning right now — we have cameras, we have software, NVRs, and PoE switches, so that installers can buy a total system from us. 62

Systems/solutions are an important element to our roadmap. FLIR has been investing significantly into a cloud-based service that brings all of our products together into a powerful Matt Bretoi, VP, North management and search tool. This America Field Sales, FLIR is not the only example though. Systems We constantly evaluate how we can bring more value to our largest verticals, whether through internal resources or our partners. A simple example that we have used for years: a fixed thermal imager is a great 24/7 surveillance tool, but coupled with intelligent analytics it is a powerful pro-active security tool that greatly increases the customer’s return on investment. We continue to look for ways on how we can build upon that solution.

SimonsVoss has launched a new digital access management system in building solutions. With this, we consequently pursue solution integration and cooperation with partners in access control. We will open up entirely new customer groups that have long wished to Bernhard Sommer, CEO, have SimonsVoss as a lock system with all of its SimonsVoss Technologies strengths. The configuration of the system has been kept extremely simple, e.g., with self-configuring online routers to establish the optimum network. For installation, this is extremely simple and reduces costs. By providing this new system, SimonsVoss will enter SOHO users market. These solutions are expendable to high-end systems and will grow with the users need.

integrateD SySteMS, Well-DeSigneD for applicationS Within the last year, we’ve increased compatibility between two systems, enabling higher-end commercial end-users to have access to a technology that’s used to support critical infrastructure sites — places like military bases, government installations, etc. — around David Gottlieb, Director, the world. So the same type of high-tech system Global Marketing Communications, Honeywell you see protecting a military base can now Security be used to protect large commercial sites like shopping malls, airports, and such. One of our security management systems can integrate intrusion, video and access systems, and this year we added more support for wireless locks to allow for users to protect more doors. For another Honeywell’s integrated solution, we also added new compact surveillance radar capabilities that will allow sites to detect intruders along perimeters when traditional ground surveillance radar systems are not practical. Milestone open platform integrations with third-party solution partners constantly bring new innovations for more vertical or expanded market needs. For example, Milestone’s video management software integrates GuardTrax mobile video alerts Karl Erik Traberg, Head of for roving officers, SICK and Optex laser Corporate Communications scanners for critical perimeter protection and Business Development, Milestone Systems and challenging physical barrier requirements, and Inovonics panic button interoperability for emergency communication.

There’s no single vendor out there offering best of breed across all disciplines including intruder, fire, access, surveillance, etc. Most corporate enterprises have a complex jumble of disparate Brian Song, MD, IDIS Europe and proprietary systems and that causes gaps in security. A control room with alarms and alerts from multiple disparate systems can result in alarms simply being ignored, through to chaos as operators jump from screen to screen as they try, and often fail, to verify each alarm. To address these challenges, IDIS recently announced the integration with Maxxess (event management), SureView (alarm monitoring) and Lenel (access control management) particularly addressing the corporate enterprise market. This integration delivers IDIS IP video surveillance systems functionality through single security management platforms to enhance resilience through event and video correlation to increase operator effectiveness, and turn streamlines operations to reduce cost. It also helps those customers integrate their legacy video surveillance and develop an easy migration path rather than needing to rip and replace everything immediately.

neW applicationS, neW MarketS The connected home is a great example where traditional security systems are now being used for non-security applications, like simple awareness and comfort control. One recently introduced Honeywell control panel can control everything from security to lighting, garage doors and more was one our most-important product launches this year in the Americas because it embodies that type of design; it features the ability to stream four IP camera feeds directly on a touchscreen and it can be controlled remotely from a Honeywell app.

David Gottlieb, Director, Global Marketing Communications, Honeywell Security

Milestone sees the healthcare industry using video surveillance for patient monitoring, schools are using it for parents to be able to see how their children are doing in class and on the playground, universities are using it for student training and teacher evaluations, utilities are using it to monitor equipment and operations including solar and wind farms overseeing remote operations, retail is using it to track customer flow and product areas of interest for improving floor layouts accordingly.

A great example is in Verint’s retail business. One of the world’s top retailers, with more than 2,000 locations, is working with us to reduce fraud and create a smarter workforce. Working with the Verint intelligence solution to solve the challenges of fraud, risk and compliance, this retailer has deployed Verint security systems to use with their physical security cameras and enhance their ability to detect, investigate and reduce fraud brought on by employee theft. The solution blends Verint’s video management software integrated with their point of sale and exception reporting system. It allows them to identify fraudulent employee activity and take action, reducing loss and improving the bottom line. Since implementing the solution, the customer has seen loss due to employee theft drop dramatically, while making their investigators more efficient in their daily tasks by proactively prioritizing issues to investigate. Reducing loss improves the profitability of the retailer and helps keep prices down, which increases customer satisfaction.

There are new developments within fire detection technology: With the use of video cameras for fire detection, we will be able to combine our expertise in both technologies in the future. These systems will open up new opportunities for special applications where conventional detection technologies have reached their limits. Examples of this are difficult ambient conditions, such as in tunnels, specialized production facilities or warehouses.

With Nedap security management systems, users can channel signals from the different systems into it — from cameras, dirty water pumps, air conditioning — you can link everything. At Ziggo Dome, the largest Dutch music center, for example, the security and facility managers wanted to be able to set up links to other building Arjan Bouter, Head of Sales, systems in the future, such as the heating system, the Nedap Security Management air conditioning system, the beer cooling system, and, something that is very important here, the lockers for visitors. So we were actually looking for something that offered building management system functionality.

One of our latest door monitoring cylinders not only offers the customer access control functionality but also a complete overview of the status and events of doors and accesses. We have a case that the aim for installing the door monitoring cylinders in cold storage rooms is to prevent wastage of unnecessary energy. This has nothing to do with safety, yet it affords the customer very high cost savings.

The Secrets Behind the Growth Tamron, we are a professional lens manufacturer. CASE STUDY CP PLUS Secures State Assmbley Elections 2014 in Rohtak CP PLUS, a premiere e-surveillance player in India secures very crtical and error free CCTV coverage at multiple Election venues in Rohtak, Haryana. SUBMITTED BY CP PLUS

election timings were extended beyond 6:00 PM, when the dark sets in the mid of October and visibility reduces substantially.

I

n India, the elections are backbone and foundation of its strong democratic framework. Any small lapse in ensuring its full sanctity has the potential danger of defeating the very principles of democracy. The bigger the election, the lesser the scope of error. The Legislative Assembly elections are very vital and key to a democratically elected government in the state. The state election commission gears up well before elections and involves bureaucratic and executive machinery in a bid to ensure free and fair elections. However, in spite of election commission’s concerted efforts, the election process at many places is far from success. The voting areas witness small to heavy clashes between supporters of various rival groups, especially when there is an honour at the stake. Thus, ensuring and eventually finishing the voting successfully is a huge achievement!

Challenges

To ensure a free and fare election has been the biggest challenge for election authorities and administration. One of the challenges was to meet the strict security and area coverage guidelines of election commission and other was to monitor small to heavy number of people who came for voting. At the same time, voters should feel safe and secure. However, since the electorate turnaround was unprecedented, the

70

January 2015

CP PLUS has to provide visual coverage for two days of election process. With a mandatory requirement of object identification, the authoritites instructed not to encroach upon the privacy of voters. Besides, poll authorities asked to produce recording of any incidence at polling station within 30 minutes, and all data for scrutiny on the next day of the poll. There was no scope of any laxity in the services as it carried very heavy penalty. Though police authorities and administration took pre-emptive and precautionary measures, yet CP PLUS was ready for any happening and raising timely alerts. In the voting time, incidences of clashes between supporters of rival political parties, bogus voting, booth capturing, intimidation of voters, bribing, etc. are not uncommon at and near the polling booth area. To ensure free and fair election, it was mandatory to record every finer details seemlessly.

Solution

CP PLUS has a wide range of electronic surveillance solutions for any need. The experts devise the most relevant, economical and comprehensive solution depending upon the system constraints. For smooth and seamless operations, CP Plus used cameras with a resolution of 1 MP and 32 GB memory card to record high quality video. This was enough for 48 hours of seemless recording. As there was no

power backup available, CP Plus team arranged for it. The Cameras have inbuilt MIC. The battery rated as 12 V and 7AH. CP-UNC-CS10L1W: 1 MP IR Cube type IP Cameras with 3.6 mm fixed lens with PIR sensor Range upto 6 Meter. Light weight camera, packed with features, delivers high definition 1 megapixel images in real-time and works on H.264 & MJPEG dualstreaming encoding. It can be connected through Wi-fi network. Other features are, DWDR, Day/Night, 3DNR, Auto iris, AWB, AGC, BLC. Its light corrections enble to deliver high resolution images irrespective of background light. So, it was perfectly fine to use it outside the polling booth, monitoring voter queues, inside booth activities, etc.

Result

Enhanced Safety and Security The results exceeded the client expectation and CCTV system with enough number of cameras proved to be highly effective deterrant. This was evident by the successful and peaceful conclusion of voting in the area. There were minor things like skipping queues and querrels which were sorted in realtime after receiveing live inputs. Cost Savings Cenrtalized monitoring and management worked wonders for maintaining law and orders in the area. It complemented physical security and proved to be an effective deterrant. Ease of Operations Authorized polling station incharge and police could view video from any camera in real-time feeds. The webbased interface for Video Surveillance Manager enabled us to view high definition video remotely.

Cherokee County School District: Hybrid IP Solution

with American Dynamic’s Victor Unified Management System and Illustra Cameras

Cherokee County School District in Georgia has migrated from its existing security over to a hybrid IP solution with victor unified management system from American Dynamics at the center of the operation SUBMITTED BY tyco security products

Challenges

Fifteen years ago, Superintendent of the CCSD, Dr. Frank Petruzielo, created the district’s public safety department. At the time, the district had no intrusion detection, unmonitored fire alarms, and a handful of unmonitored, individual cameras purchased by individual schools. Mark Kissel, chief of police for the school district and his team, conducted site surveys and assessments to determine what the district needed to move forward with a comprehensive security plan. Officer Maloney in front of squad car at school

C

herokee County School District in Georgia decided to migrate its existing security over to a hybrid IP solution with victor unified management system from American Dynamics at the center of the operation.

Introduction

The Cherokee County School District (CCSD) has grown tremendously over the past 10 years, adding seven elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools to its roster. The public schools in Cherokee County are ranked among the top in Georgia, boasting the highest average SAT scores in the state for 2012. Together, the eighth largest school system in Georgia comprises 57 schools and centers, including 24 elementary schools, seven middle schools, six high schools, three preschool centers, central offices and warehouses. With approximately 40,000 students and 4,500 staff to protect, the district’s public safety department of 10 takes its job very seriously. 72

January 2015

With no state funding for physical security equipment, CCSD needed to roll out its security plan in careful steps, prioritizing its needs and most at-risk areas. Initial security included cameras at the district’s high schools and middle schools. Over the last decade and a half, the district’s security has evolved to access control, alarm systems and surveillance to keep its students, employees and community safe. “It’s nice to say that you have the bells and whistles in a security system, but the reality has to be based on need as well as what the community is willing to fund,” Kissel said. After the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., made headlines, Dr. Petruzielo put together an ad hoc safety and security committee made up of district employees, public safety staff and community members to re-evaluate the district’s security needs and note any room for improvement. For CCSD, positioning cameras in areas where students convene such as cafeterias, playgrounds, gymnasiums,

and other outdoor areas, is a top priority. For schools that have a main road or tree-lined area facing entries, surveillance is needed in those areas. “Our main focus is monitoring the flow of traffic and places where students congregate. Parent and bus access points, ingress and egress, and interior hallways--especially in the high schools--is important. If you are going to have issues, they are most likely to happen in places where groups of students form,” Kissel relayed. The safety and security committee determined that the district lacked cameras in 13 elementary schools. Ultimately, the district decided to install new IP cameras and equipment in its high schools and middle schools, while transitioning analog cameras from those facilities over to the district’s elementary schools. Previously, the school district had been managing its video systems with Intellex, Network Client and Policy Manager. To accomplish its goals, the CCSD needed a hybrid solution that would grow with the organization. The school district turned to its integrator Tyco Integrated Security, which has been a trusted partner of the CCSD going back 15 years--the same time that Kissel came to his position in the district and the superintendent created the district’s public safety department.

Solution

CCSD began its journey by working with Intelligent Marketing, a manufacturer representative for

CASE STUDY

American Dynamics. Intelligent Marketing’s sales engineers were made aware of the challenges to incorporate IP video into the CCTV system at CCSD and recommended that CCSD migrated to IP by initially installing victor unified management system, VideoEdge hybrid recorders and American Dynamics’ Illustra cameras. So far, more than 30 IP cameras have been installed in the district’s high schools and middle schools, and 13 more schools are in the middle of deployment. The VideoEdge hybrid recorders allow CCSD to continue handling its old infrastructure of analog cameras, as well as its new IP cameras. “The victor client is backwards compatible, allowing them to migrate from their Intellex system and really capitalize on the capabilities of a digital platform,” explained Gary L. Royal, senior commercial account executive at Tyco Integrated Security. “There is no other solution on the market today that allows an end user to maintain and incorporate their current DVR infrastructure while moving into a single Client platform IP solution,” concurred Scott Bryan, Business Development Manager, Intelligent Marketing. “victor allows the end user to decide when it’s time to replace older hardware, maximizing their return on investment.” Now, with victor and VideoEdge Hybrid Recorders in place, CCSD’s public safety officers have faster search capabilities, including Smart Search for searching through days or weeks of video within seconds. “We get much more information in a faster sequence than before., and have four times the throughput,” Kissel said. Another advancement for the school district, according to Kissel, is better image quality and remote capabilities. Wider viewing angles with Illustra IP cameras allow public safety officers to see more and adjust less, viewing

video at full 1080p and 30 images per second resolution. Real-time auto focus, 20X optical zoom, wide dynamic range and PTZ capability that moves at 512-degrees per second, have not gone unnoticed with the school district staff either. “Now that we are in the IP world, not only is everything better in terms of clarity, but the ability to digitally enhance what we are trying to look at is significantly better than with our old infrastructure,” Kissel said. In addition, the security management platform allows public safety staff to view live video remotely from an iPhone or other mobile devices. This gives them access to important video while they are patrolling anywhere on a campus without time delays or other problems. This improvement is significant to Kissel and his team. They have no central security office to view the school district’s surveillance, but have the ability to view video remotely and at individual locations. “We had an ability to view video remotely under our old system, but it was sluggish on the operational side,” Kissel explained. “If we wanted to adjust or move a camera left to right, there were time delays. With the IP camera connectivity platform, it’s a lot faster, the video is a lot cleaner, and our ability to zoom in with clarity has just put us in great shape.” Faster remote operations and clearer video are not the only benefits that CCSD has seen since it began its migration to IP. With the cameras and new digital platform, security staff also can troubleshoot remotely, eliminating the need (and cost) for inperson adjustments and service from technicians. The Future With an eye on the most costeffective solution, Kissel and his team specifically chose a hybrid platform that

Victor-Client-46plasma-16gui_SUPERLARGE

would allow the school district to grow and upgrade its security system without replacing all of its existing infrastructure at once. As its older, analog cameras now in place at the district’s elementary schools start to fail, they have the option to replace them on an as-needed basis. “Some of our older recorders are still capable and functional right now,” Kissel said. “As time goes on and these recorders die out, we will replace them with new hybrids. It gives us the greatest potential for growing with the solution.” Once CCSD is finished upgrading the rest of its high school and middle school locations, it can look forward to using more features and capabilities of the system for a seamless, integrated platform across all its facilities. One of the benefits of the victor unified management platform, is its ability to integrate with other systems across facilities, including access control and fire systems. Kissel said that as the staff becomes more familiar with the security platform and its capabilities, they will look into integrating the solution with its other operations in the next year or two.

As part of the Frankfurt airport expansion programme with the new North/West runway, a uniform impermeable security concept was required for perimeter protection of the new area. The guidelines laid forth by the responsible regional aviation authority - in this case the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport and Federal State Development - and the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), as well as structural conditions on site, it was clear that only a combination of different technical solutions would be sensible for perimeter protection. The solution would have to consist of fences, CCTV cameras and thermal imaging cameras. Therefore, Fraport’s purchasing division invited various manufacturers to present their products in a large-scale test run. Torsten Siats, who is responsible for telecommunications, radio & CCTV at Fraport, remembers: “There were probably 4 - 5 fence manufacturers and at least 5 - 6 video systems providers, who presented their products under 74

January 2015

the same conditions. About 40 different cameras were hung on two masts and a perimeter route was spanned between the masts with different types of fences.”

Test run with weather simulation by the airport fire department

Manfred Reinhard, who works in Fraport’s aircraft and terminal management and enterprise security division, adds with a smile: “In our test run, we have the unusual ability to simulate an extremely wide range of weather conditions from tropical rain to the finest fog using our large Simba fire trucks.” These experimental simulations also clearly confirmed that a combination of various perimeter protection measures is ultimately useful because each technology had different strengths and weaknesses. “Under normal daylight conditions, we can recognize possible hazards most easily using CCTV cameras. But they show weaknesses at night and in adverse weather conditions”, explains Manfred Reinhard and his colleague Torsten Siats adds: “Thermal imaging cameras work very well day and night and even in cases of light fog or smoke, but they

The test run resulted in a detailed security concept. Fraport opted for a combination consisting of a fence, over 50 CCTV cameras and about 40 thermal imaging cameras in sensitive areas of the security perimeter. The technical planning phase had been productneutral, but now it was time to choose suppliers for the various products. The market leader FLIR Systems was awarded the contract for the thermal imaging cameras. In October 2010 the FLIR F series was implemented - at first only with a field of vision of 48° and an infrared resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. One important aspect for Fraport’s technical department, was that the cameras be easy to start operating. Therefore they were initially connected using analogue technology and installation was carried out by the installation company SAM. Another important selection criteria was that the cameras should have both an analogue video port and an IP network connection. Now all FLIR F series cameras are controlled as IP cameras using their internal encoders. Fraport’s technology department provided FLIR with valuable suggestions for the encoder’s user interface.

Rain protection

Due to the fact that the cameras were installed in an almost horizontal position and on an open stretch of land

CASE STUDY

at the airport site, the cameras were exposed to strong lateral winds from the outset. Therefore in the case of rain and strong winds, alarms were triggered by rain drops that hit the camera lens almost horizontally due to the wind. FLIR F series cameras are equipped with sun and rain protection by default. However, this can’t be extended so an employee in Fraport’s video department designed their own technical solution. “We should have patented it”, explains Manfred Reinhard with a grin, because FLIR has now implemented this concept for adjustable sun and rain protection in its FC series S.

Practical system for removable camera cassettes

Yet another subsequent change was required. Fraport needed thermal imaging cameras for some selected locations to have a wider range. The FLIR F-324 model was particularly suited for this job with its 19 mm lens, which can detect an object the size of a person at a distance of almost 500 m. The design of the FLIR F series was ideal for replacing the camera unit. FLIR has developed a practical cassette system, which enables users who need a higher viewing/opening angle to make the required modification without having to buy a completely new camera system. Therefore sensors and lenses can be quickly upgraded or repaired. Users do not have to return their camera and upgrading or replacing the cartridge only takes a few minutes.

Data protection

Thermal imaging cameras are also interesting with regard to data protection. They don’t show individual features, but only depict “temperature signatures”. Therefore, they can be used in all cases requiring special data protection, as they are not problematic in this regard as compared to CCTV cameras.

Calibration and training

Proper calibration of all the cameras was a complex task, as it actually requires a full cycle of the seasons. The conditions in winter are completely different than in a hot summer and a wet autumn is different from spring. When it comes to calibrating thermal imaging cameras, the most important factors are not, as one might think, the extremely high or low temperatures. The medium temperature range is actually much trickier because there is not such a big difference in temperature between the environment and objects. It is also important to take into consideration that the cameras are not accessible to service personnel at all times, because they would trigger alarms and because airport operations should not be interrupted. In order to best calibrate the cameras and for a better understanding of the underlying technology, Marcel Wiechmann of FLIR’s Infrared Training Center (ITC) trained the Fraport employees in an inhouse workshop on location.

Detection and software

The task of the cameras of course consists first and foremost of reliably detecting potential intruders. “Priority number one: If someone or something violates the airport’s perimeter, then the system has to detect it”, explains Bernhard Amthor, who is responsible for video among other things in Fraport’s Information & Communication department. “Priority number two: If this is not the case, then no alarm should be sounded. The number of false alarms should always be kept to an absolute minimum to ensure efficiency. Of course this never works 100% and that can sometimes even have charming aspects. For example, there is a lonesome fox that makes its rounds around the fence every night at a certain time and has become a good friend for the Fraport team. It is detected as such and no alarm is sounded.”

camera detects motion, an alarm is triggered in the Aimetis system. The motion detection system made by Aimetis is able to distinguish between movements in different directions. Often only movement in a certain direction is defined as unusual. Therefore landing planes do not mistakenly trigger an alarm for example. Therefore the Aimetis software can be configured so that only certain direction-specific movements are reported. The software then sends such an event to the video management system (VMS) provided by the company Schille. The VMS forwards the event to the security control center’s deployment system - and only then is deployment initiated.

Maintenance, warranty and energy efficiency

The FLIR cameras are basically maintenancefree, but Fraport services all its cameras twice a year and it makes no exception for the F series cameras. FLIR provides a 2-year warranty on the current cameras and even a 10-year warranty on the detectors (after registration of the camera after purchase). This is also good news for the controlling department, because the purchase and replacement costs are spread over a longer period of time. When it comes to operating costs, thermal imaging cameras are unbeatable despite their higher purchase price compared to CCTV cameras. Additional spotlights and the masts to mount them on are unnecessary because no additional illumination is needed. Infrared cameras can “see” even in the darkest conditions. This energy efficiency is well aligned with the “Airport Environmental Partnership” program, in which Fraport has joined airline companies, energy suppliers and the German air-traffic control to contribute to climate protection.

CASE STUDY Ensuring a Safe School Environment Southampton School District (SHSD) proceeded to install 221 Cylock electronic cylinders in the elementary and middle schools and issued 249 smart keys to teachers and staff. SUBMITTED BY Sellox B.V.

S

outhampton School District (SHSD) is nestled in the beach village of Southampton, New York. As part of the summer colony known as The Hamptons, it has a mix of middleincome neighborhoods, rural farms, and an affluent estate section. The village is anchored by the elementary, middle, and high schools which are at the very center of community activity. James Gresham, SHSD Director of Security, says, “We decided to elevate the level of security in our schools to ensure the same safe environment our teachers, staff, students, and members of the community have always enjoyed.”

Challenge: Key Control Issues

Over the years SHSD had lost control of their mechanical master/submaster key system. Problems associated with key-sharing were worrisome and there was constant concern about lost keys being used by unauthorized

76

January 2015

people. SHSD began searching for a solution that would circumvent lost key issues and give them more control at the door.

Solution: Cylock

Randy Dobler, SHSD Director of Facilities & Operations, says, “A number of manufacturers showed us their products. It was sheer luck that I stumbled upon a Cylock ad in a trade magazine. We immediately saw Cylock as a cost-effective alternative to what we had in place. Not only could we expand the system as needed but we could retrofit the locks in all our doors without hardwiring. We contacted other schools that were using Cylock and received positive feedback.” After a trial installation at SHSD offices in 2006, they proceeded to install 221 Cylock electronic cylinders in the elementary and middle schools and

issued 249 smart keys to teachers and staff. Steve Phillips, SHSD Maintenance Supervisor, shares, “I’ve been very impressed with the ease of installation. It only takes three minutes to retrofit a lock with the Cylock eCylinder. We are currently expanding the Cylock system to the high school.“ Dobler concludes, “Prior to Cylock, we felt like everyone in town had keys to our schools. Now, each teacher and staff member carries their own smart key that is programmed to access that person’s work spaces. The key is valuable to staff so keysharing has ceased. Also, we haven’t experienced a lost key since we installed the system. Cylock has clearly exceeded our expectations.”

T

he Indian security industry is poised for stupendous growth. Any growing economy requires new infrastructure leading to demand for surveillance and security solutions. A lot of projects have been held up in 2014 because of the struggling economy and unstable political environment. As the new stable government is reigning with a vision to lead and secure India, we expect the roll out of new projects in government and corporate sectors. We expect a large proportion of this will be from sectors like, City Surveillance, Banking, and Hospitality and so on. The government, in general, is the biggest segment in terms of volume demand. The private sector enterprises as well as SMBs, show huge potential. You can get an idea of this by examining some of the major market segments for security solutions.

Infrastructure/Smart Cities

With a new government in Delhi, India’s urban agenda is now focused 78

January 2015

on the creation of “Smart Cities” in industrial corridors. Modi’s vision for advanced cities that benefit from the latest technology has finally begun to take shape with the Ministry of Urban Development identifying almost all the locations where they will be built as well as existing cities that are to be remodelled on these lines.

A smart city must have three of the five infrastructure requirements - energy management, water management, transport and traffic, safety and security and solid waste management. At the same time, it must have three of the five application domains - healthcare, education, inclusive, participative governance and community services. The growth of infrastructure and utilities is the key to the growth of security surveillance industry. These sectors will get a major boost as the smart cities projects take off. Modi government has announced ambitious plans to spend Rs 7060 Crores on building 100 smart cities across the country. As security is key component of any city, and 5%+ GDP growth promise a huge potential in future.

Transport and Retail

CCTV systems are widely used in the transportation sector to manage traffic flow and enhance highways safety, and they continue to play a significant role

in retail sector for valuable management information.

Banking

Banking industry requires extreme precision and maintenance in smooth operations. Security is a part of every aspect of the retail-banking environment including vaults, retail transaction counters, ATMs, night deposit boxes, etc. Banks have to comply with regulations and mitigate the risk at the same time. For financial institutions, administering and managing video across geographically divergent sites is critical to operational efficiency. Banks are aiming at getting more value out of the security investment. The video surveillance fits their bills perfectly. As video offers them one of the broadest opportunities to positively impact other areas of branch operations. It can help the financial institution do things like increase branch efficiency, improve guard service productivity, and enhance customer satisfaction. With strong economy fundamentals and positive outlook, banking sector is well poised for a higher growth this year. This will be a major boost to the security surveillance sector. The other important industry segments, which promise a healthy positive growth in future are hospitality, healthcare, education, community services, railways and airports. With foreign countries issuing advisories before visiting India to their nationals, hotels are strengthening their video

surveillance with foolproof features. Railways and airports are introducing and upgrading their existing surveillance systems to capture high definition images, which can lead to identification of culprits or the vehicles used by them. Healthcare is facing new security challenges too. Many hospitals are getting aware of the potential dangers to their staff and people.

Future Trends: Summary

Cloud-based video surveillance, also known as video surveillance as a service (VSaaS) is the coming generation of video surveillance. As per the current market trends, high definition and megapixel cameras are fast penetrating the market, and gigapixel cameras are the next big things. Also, the cloud offers cost advantage as it reduces the cost of

overall system. The future of electronic security equipment market is drifting towards integrated security solutions, created by integrating multiple systems, including video, intrusion, video analytics, fire, access control, HVAC, chemical and biological sensors, etc. Such systems would offer actionable intelligence and decision support to the organization. “The video surveillance industry is going to emerge as a huge market in the next few years in wake of rising demands from sectors like infrastructure, airports, railway, housing, hospitality, services, healthcare, retail and transportation”, said Yogesh B. Dutta, COO, Aditya Infotech.

To 4K or Not to 4K Video? There is need to think beyond the obvious, while decoding the 4K Video puzzle. By Joel White, Senior Product Manager-IP Camera, Tyco Security Products

and beyond what is required and able to be managed by a typical security operation. For many reasons, full HD/1080P is the most commonly used resolution for new systems. The majority of security systems in use for live monitoring situation do not really benefit from such a resolution, as the human eye is well served with the details of a 1080P picture. Higher resolutions pay out when more details are required in forensic investigations.

O

Joel White, Senior Product ManagerIP Camera, Tyco Security Products

ur industry’s seemingly insatiable appetite for more and more resolution has now produced a wave of interest in 4K cameras that promise exceptional clarity and sharpness, akin to the big screen, Ultra HD television sets found in consumer electronics stores and homes.

The jury is still out on whether there is an immediate need for the resolution that can overcome the downsides of increased storage and bandwidth required for running 4K cameras in a surveillance operation. Like so many things, if the cost of the camera, cost of the supporting system infrastructure and components were of no concern, this new format would likely be a more viable and attractive option for many security applications. Here are four things to consider before making the leap to investing in and deploying 4K video: What will I get with 4K that is not possible at lower resolution? There’s no doubt that 4K technology is light years ahead of analog quality, but the reality is that the increased clarity and sharpness provided by that level of resolution is often over 80

January 2015

Double the resolution, double the processing requirements Users typically want to see more than one camera on one monitor, and only occasionally switch to full screen modes. With 4K, the clarity of that multi camera view would be no clearer than what would be viewed from a lower resolution camera. In addition, delivering streams from multiple 4K cameras presents some technical challenges. The client PC and graphics card must handle a significant flow of data. The best approach is to have the live view limited to only enough resolution for the video size and screen resolution of the display. Today a typical approach to balance PC power requirements and quality uses lower resolution streams for live view, while recording in the highest resolutions. 4K resolution taxes the workload on the network because recording the highest resolution means the full stream content moves from the camera to the NVR. Limitations on form factors, lenses The availability of affordable high resolution optics is just not there yet, and a dome style camera with a typical curved dome bubble cannot transmit the 4K resolution. In addition, a true 8MP resolution lens with appropriate

coverage for the 4K sensor is quite large, which would render a 4K version of the compact dome camera (the market’s favorite form factor) essentially not possible. The dome camera would get physically bigger which, for many customers, is a negative. Bandwidth and storage requirements From a cost perspective, quadrupling the resolution from full HD to 4K won’t quite double the camera price. However, on the recording side it will most definitely demand more than double the storage requirements when operating under the same conditions. Bandwidth consumption is related to processor power available on the camera. For example, the average full HD cameras deliver about 6Mbps at 30 ips. On the bright side, some manufacturers are offering full HD models with advanced compression capabilities that can reduce bandwidth consumption to about 3Mbps, with the next iteration to handle 4K video at full HD bandwidth consumption levels. Additionally new compression standards such as H.265 HVEC (High Efficiency Video Encoding) will make higher resolution bandwidth more practical for surveillance. So where does this leave you, 4K today or not just yet? For some customers a bigger number is frequently perceived as a better solution but surveillance installations should focus on the reason the system investment is being made in the first place; protection of personnel and protection of assets. It is far from a one size fits all decision and resolution is an important tool in the system solution.

New TINYON IP 2000 2-in-1 Cameras from Bosch TINYON IP 2000 2-in-1 cameras are Professional Video Security Solution for Homes and Small Businesses. BY editorial team

F

eeling safe at home or in shops is not about acquiring the proper hardware. It is about knowing that alarms are triggered when needed and video data is recorded and safely stored, so that looking back at what happened is possible regardless of time and place. This kind of reassurance is given by the new TINYON IP 2000 WI (wireless) and TINYON IP 2000 PIR cameras from Bosch. Both models offer a cost-effective, reliable and comprehensive solution to easily setup a professional system to secure homes or small businesses. As 2-in-1 solutions, both models combine a built-in passive infrared (PIR) sensor and a 720p HD IP video surveillance camera. Even in complete darkness, the PIR sensor enables the detection of any motion within a five meter range. Depending on the light levels, a motion alarm triggers the built-in white light LED, ensuring the highest quality of video images known from Bosch. This guarantees the easy identification of events or intruders. Besides motion detection, both cameras offer a built-in microphone to trigger soundbased alarms. Together with the built-in loudspeaker, users can establish a remote

two-way communication channel to address and verify possible security situations. In case of an alarm, notifications are sent to users via text message or e-mail. Moreover, facial snapshots or video clips can be directly sent to pre-defined recipients or (free-of-charge) cloud accounts allowing for a fast alarm verification by or response of the users. Video data can either be stored in the cloud, on a network video recorder like the DIVAR IP 2000 recording solution from Bosch, or (depending on the camera model) on the built-in SD card. Thus, both models enable easy back-up solutions to ensure the safe storage of the relevant video data. The efficient usage of available storage capacity and network infrastructure is guaranteed by the built-in intelligent Dynamic Noise Reduction (iDNR) specific for Bosch IP cameras. With this, the cameras actively analyze the scene and distinguish between relevant information such as moving objects and image noise artifacts. With iDNR bitrates are reduced by up to 50 percent, significantly reducing storage requirements and network strain.

Since users cannot be everywhere all the time, both TINYON cameras are fully supported by the Bosch unique Dynamic Transcoding technology. In combination with the Bosch Video Security app, this technology offers smooth live video and instant access to HD images when needed, regardless of available bandwidth, everywhere and at any time. The TINYON IP 2000 WI can be used as a stand-alone solution or added to an existing security installation thanks to its wireless connection – easily installed and set-up via the WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) function, it is ideal for areas without evident network cabling. The TINYON IP 2000 PIR offers Power over Ethernet (PoE) functionality ensuring that audio, video and power all are transmitted via the network cable (CAT5). Both TINYON IP cameras work seamlessly with a wide range of security software and recording solutions from Bosch and many other industry providers. This is backed by ONVIF conformance (Open Network Video Interface Forum) and the Integration Partner Program (IPP). 97
