Vice President, Security Services & Fire Products, Gunnebo India

How do companies integrate safety criteria while preserving its economic viability? Transform safety issues into universal Corporate Language i.e. Numbers. Only what can be measured gets done. Unfortunately even today most of the Safety decisions are based on considering these as overheads, rather than allocating them to products and Processes. The second approach is the FIRE SAFETY AUDITING SYSTEM which is a comprehensive management System rather than a technical measure for compliance. This stresses the need for integration through clear Corporate Goals, Policy, Programs and Organizational development. This defines reporting requirements and gives credibility to input through an independent verification process. JANUARY 2017

Safe City projects are in vogue now and City Surveillance is the new buzzword for security industry. The city surveillance trend is growing in India despite multiple challenges. The Safe City initiative was rolled out by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) few years ago with help of respective states, municipal corporations and local administrative bodies. Now cities are rapidly embracing the concept of Safe City to provide citizens with security and a sense of safety. The Safe City Surat project was implemented almost three years ago. This trend was followed by cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Nanded, Kolhapur, where City Surveillance projects were implemented. Now Hyderabad, Nagpur, Nashik,Aurangabad, Noida, Ludhiyana , Lucknow and many other cities are in the process of becoming Safe Cities. a&s India explores this growing trend. 40

he idea of creating a safe city was propelled by the need to provide citizens with security and safety under mega city plan proposed by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). With urban city threats on a constant rise; aggregate and decipher data from multiple sources to provide critical insights becomes a key game changer. It is important that new generation technologies be used to make citizens safe from Terror, Crime, Riots, Stampede and Natural Calamities (Flood, Storm, forest fire or Earthquake etc.). In a safe city project, the command center acts as the brain .operators charged with maintaining the security and order of the city are constantly on the lookout for unusual situation and, in the event of emergency, must respond to it quickly and effectively. PISIM or Physical Security Incident Management software, can be a powerful tool to enhance the incident management capabilities of Safe City Control Room Team and disaster management troops. Latest Developments According to Aditya Khemka, CEO & Director, Aditya Infotech, “The city surveillance market is booming with the steady rise in the need for reliable solutions to safeguard the city streets. Numerous cities across the country are already investing in construction and centralized surveillance management systems to ensure public security, deter crimes, and improve emergency response systems.” He further added, “Ultra high resolution 4K IP Cameras, NVRs, Video Management Solutions, Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions, and Video Walls & Controls are some of the latest developments in City surveillance.” According to Tom Dodrill, Vertical Market Manager for City Surveillance, Pelco by Schneider Electric, “Growth continues as a top concern for officials and leaders in India, as the influx of population numbers present a number of challenges;such as traffic flow and congestion, potential terrorist threats on city streets, and an influx of crime and vandalism. The quest to protect the general population alongside this growth has lead officials to invest in Safe City solutions that address these threats. From a technology standpoint, Safe City solutions in India incorporate a complete security technology suite,

including video surveillance, access control, video analytics, public safety communications, social media tracking, gunshot detection and license plate recognition, among others – all of which can be unified and managed centrally.”

According to Takayuki Inaba, MD, NEC India, “The Indian government has been actively promoting its mission for delivering 100 Smart Cities to promote urban transformation. It is necessary for basic infrastructure to be in place such as water, power, roads and transport facilities to encourage the successful growth of a city. Government initiatives like these are great opportunities for companies like NEC as it will give us a window where we will be able to bring our global expertise and contribute to government’s smart cities mission and Safe City programme.” According to Sudhindra Holla, Country Manager, India & SAARC, Axis Communications,”India has the second largest population in the world today. This itself presents tremendous scope for criminal activities and safety challenges in large cities. It is very easy for miscreants to hide amongst the crowds and go undetected. In large cities, there is no clear demarcation between the business zones and suburbs. Traffic on the roads and foliage on the streets obstruct the view of most surveillance cameras in all areas. During night time, many streets do not have street lighting activated either. Cameras which are not equipped to monitor these streets in the dark become vulnerable in the dark.” He further added,”Another major problem is the lack of CCTV cameras altogether. We have observed that in many instances, cameras are installed only after such an incident has taken place. Smaller stores on the road install fake cameras as a way of theft prevention, which further affects their security.” “Such challenges need to be overcome first. The safety of the public is priority for the government. There is immense scope to improve the security of the public through CCTV cameras. The technological challenges, in many cases, have been overcome through breakthrough technologies such as discreet cameras, high-resolution imaging, network storage, wide dynamic cameras etc. which can be implemented throughout the country for added security,” observed Sudhindra Holla, According to Ashwin Amarpur, Director AllGoVision, “City Surveillance Vertical Market has one of the fastest growing markets for Video Surveillance over the years. With increased terrorist attacks, traffic problems and criminal activities, safer cities have been an area of concern for the Indian government. Video Surveillance equipment is being used in Indian metro cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi, etc. and safe city projects are being given focus. Thousands of Surveillance Cameras are being introduced in these cities, and the government plans to establish 100 Smart Cities where Video Surveillance would be of utmost significance.”

41

According to Avinash Trivedi, Vice President Business Development & Sales , Videonetics, “India offers tremendous business opportunities in the city surveillance verticals since the Security System Deployment has been at its minimal. With rising threat levels, more & more cities would opt for such a system. Some of the large cities like, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Surat, Delhi, and Bhopal etc. are actively using such system.” He further added, “The Smart City Initiative of central government gave much required push to “Safe City” part of “Smart City” and we have seen many state government launching such programs for key cities in their respective states. Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh are some of the leading states who launched big ticket “Safe City” programs. Other states are also expected to follow.”

On 2nd October 2016 , Mumbai City Surveillance project’s second phase was launched by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, The feed from 4,717 cameras at 1,510 locations are beamed to police and traffic control rooms. The Mumbai City Survillance project is being implemented by Larsen and Toubro.

once-siloed departments and agencies to deter, prevent and investigate threats to improve safety. Situational awareness is of critical importance as it allows stakeholders to gain new levels of insight to identify risks more quickly and expedite investigations. High levels of intelligence and awareness are achieved by transforming raw information into actionable intelligence, thereby enabling the capture of evidence that can be used to realize a holistic approach to security.”

According to, Kevin Wine, Vice President, Marketing, Verint, “Safe City initiatives are one of the best ways to build an efficient, proactive security posture to help enhance safety, and propel increased collaboration between city officials, security leaders, law enforcement, and first responders. These projects incorporate a broad network of sensors, processes, and systems that help cities achieve new levels of situational awareness. By aggregating large amounts of data and turning it into valuable information, city officials are better positioned to identify threats, manage emergency situations and investigate incidents.”

He further added, “The growing acceptance of Big Data analysis and the Internet of Things (IoT) has significantly improved the collection of data across municipalities. These functions permit the collection of the most relevant data across systems, services, and devices, driving collaboration across

We presently offer Ultra HD 4K cameras, IP cameras and NVR, robust and scalable enterprise video management solutions equipped with Edge analytics offering analytical capabilities such as facial detection, fog/ defog, intrusion, tripwire, abandoned, missing, and much more.

According to Anand Chakravarthi, Area Director of Surveillance Solution, Pivot3,” Safe City projects are growing in popularity across the globe as more metropolitan areas become more proactive with security initiatives and increase efficiency across city infrastructures. Video surveillance is a key part of any Safe City program as it helps operators gain higher levels of situational awareness and intelligence. Just like enterprise organizations, cities now use Big Data and network-enabled devices to get the most out of their investments in public safety initiatives. The collection and correlation of data, whether securityor business-related, helps cities develop programs that lower crime rates, manage traffic flow and enable timely responses to situations.”

Aditya Khemka, CEO and Director, Aditya Infotech

According to Jinesh Shah, Director, Avik Technology, “In security industry technology is changing very fast, solution provider must keep pace with the latest technology, implementation of HD camera and rising need of Biometrics machines will help solution provider to be in race. Introduction of Internet Protocol (IP) based cctv cameras, remote surveillance, video analytics, digital video & IoT these are the latest development.”

Opportunities and Challenges

“System integrators continue to face operational and implementation hurdles due to lack of awareness, training and process standardization. Furthermore, lack of established policies to regulate security frameworks or central monitoring discounts the effectiveness of the entire securing process,” observed Aditya Khemka. He further added, “The security market offers ample opportunities to system integrators at various levels, including transition, upgrades, customization, and other value added services.” “It is estimated that by 2025, 600 million people will be living in urban India. To handle such large-scale urbanization, there is a need to find new ways to manage complexity, increase efficiency, reduce expenses and simultaneously improve quality of life. Hence the need is to build smart cities. A research from Frost and Sullivan estimated the Safe City market could reach $3.3 trillion by 2025. The rising population growth in mega cities such as Gujarat and New Delhi may be a key challenge to the government as their needs will be different from smaller cities. Apart from the huge population, India would also have to find ways to effectively manage the cities, its demand and environment. It would be advisable to take gradual steps and engage citizens on a community level to know their needs, so that solutions can be created based on feedback,” said Takayuki Inaba.

Divanshu Gupta,

Product Manager -Video Security, Sony

He further added, “Another challenge that we face today is that we need to go through multiple layers of authorities, authentications and approvals. In addition, Indian cities are so diverse – each with its own set of geographic and demographic complexities, strengths and requirements. In India, NEC is working closely with the central and state governments to understand the need of utilising technology for tackling governance challenges and making a smart city safe.” “Public safety and security is one of our priorities and focus in India. We offer a variety of solutions including biometrics and fingerprinting technology for police forensic departments and cybercrimes. NEC has already successfully deployed our advanced Face Recognition System, ranked No.1 in the world, in Surat Safe City for Surat Police, and at Lemon Tree Premier, Delhi Airport in India. These solutions empower security teams to prevent crime by offering real-time blacklist and whitelist management using highly intelligent live CCTV feed analysis. We are also one of the biometric solution providers for India’s largest national ID project,” informed Takayuki Inaba. According to Ashwin Amarpur following are the opportunities and challenges: Opportunities: The central and state governments of India and the police forces are putting emphasis on the use of Technology to improve the Security Systems. The focus on Surveillance projects has increased drastically over the years and the use of CCTVs, Video Analytics, Data Mining Solutions etc. is prevalent. Thus, the opportunity is huge for the OEMs and SIs. Challenges: Reducing the vulnerabilities which may exist in the implementation of Surveillance Projects is a big challenge. Also, ensuring sustainable growth of cities through proper planning, efficient management and good governance is also essential along with ensuring the safety of new emergent cities. Improved quality of life and economic development is also a major concern. According to Divanshu Gupta, Product Manager -Video Security, Sony- India , “Being as a growing market of

city surveillance projects many Solution Provider have opportunity to work on Bigger scale via which their scale of bidding project will be high , Gain more experience and Good association with Big contractor. Most of these projects will be High value projects which will help them to increase their Bidding Qualification. Central as well as state governments are now working with state police agencies towards creating high security standards by undertaking security projects that include deployment of modern security infrastructure such as CCTVs, gun shot detectors, Video analytics, data mining solutions, etc. There has been an increased focus of the state and the central government on Security and Surveillance projects which may result in bigger safe city project opportunities for system integrators and technology partners.” He further added, “The challenges includes significant Manpower and associated cost, Budget Restrain , Standardization and interoperability, Lack of awareness within communities,

Steve Birkmeier,

Vice President, Sales and Business Development, Arteco

Jinesh Shah,

Director, Avik Technology

“While the opportunities are tremendous, the challenges are also manifold for example, lack of technical understanding of the agency spearheading the project, no “rule book” to turn to when it comes to project designing or requirement finalization, no uniformity/neutrality of specs resulting in vendor driven, fit to budget system rather than a system which is needed on outcome basis etc. More focus is given on IT components of the projects rather than specific “use-cases” which are relevant to the project from law & order, traffic management and overall improvement of quality of life of common citizen,” said Avinash Trivedi. He further added, “Another challenge is selection of technology which is best suited to Indian conditions. Indian Technology Companies should be provided with an equal & just opportunity to offer their products & solutions. It is seen that the government project tenders have pre-qualification criteria which prohibits Indian companies from participating in such projects. Such criteria are either too restrictive or favors foreign technology companies thereby denying equal opportunity to Indian technology companies. Such demand is overdue and it is time Indian technology is given its due importance and place in such government procurement.” According to Anand Chakravarthi, “The biggest challenge with today’s Safe City programs is how to effectively store and manage captured video. Often times, the volume of video information collected from modern systems can be overwhelming. At the same time, the value of video has increased and cities must ensure this critical data is protected. Instances in which live or recorded video becomes inaccessible and data is lost can lead to compliance issues, vulnerabilities and operational shutdowns. Therefore, ensuring the protection of video data is paramount to any Safe City initiative.”

43

He further added, “We’re starting to see large cities deploy more advanced IT solutions than those traditionally relied on to store video, such as NVRs and DVRs which cannot provide the performance or reliability of newer solutions. Traditional enterprise storage appliances are often too expensive and complex for video deployments. Storage and data management platforms that deliver robust enterprise-class IT capabilities deliver advanced levels of video and data protection, system performance and cost efficiencies, enabling users to realize the benefits of highly efficient shared storage and built-in failover without the complexity or cost typically associated with infrastructure based on separate servers and SAN storage. Cities need to closely evaluate how they can incorporate more advanced IT platforms into their video storage infrastructure. Critical capabilities to look for include the ability to support the write-intensive nature of video surveillance environments, built-in failover and robust performance to protect from system failures.”

According to Steve Birkmeier, Vice President, Sales and Business Development, Arteco, Safe City projects face the uphill battle of obtaining buy-in for public-private partnerships, which enable municipal officials to cover more ground by leveraging security devices installed by private businesses within city limits. Cities that are considering overarching Safe City projects must also consider budgeting for infrastructure improvement, installation and maintenance costs, both in the short- and long-term, and where the burden of certain costs will fall. Since the demand for video surveillance and video management technology is increasing, many diverse applications across cities are already equipped with an initial surveillance technology investment, so the opportunity for interoperability and growth is found when cities begin to connect these systems together across vertical markets through advanced

Intelligent management integrated with information and communication technology (ICT) and active citizen participation drive the creation of smart and safe cities. Moreover, integration and collaboration of resources and authorities are a key requirement for any city to work smartly.

“There is significant interest in deploying technologies that help cities realize new levels of intelligence and situational awareness. How are these goals obtained? It’s through the combination of multiple processes, solutions and technologies, and aggregating information from these sources to gain the most accurate information available about a situation at any given time. Technology tools are a valuable component of building high levels of awareness. Surveillance analytics, for example, allow law enforcement and security officials to quickly pinpoint when an individual breaches a protected area and can also be used in post-event analysis to determine trends,” said Kevin Wine.

software platforms that require little to no installation time.

Takayuki Inaba,

Managing Director, NEC India

“The Security in India is at par with the rest of the world so there are certain things that need to take care in Safe cities. We are on the edge of Digital revolutions still Indian Organization face scarcity due to non-availability of skilled cyber security professional. But with the help of new technologies in video surveillance playing a vital role is Safe cities Face recognition, man counting, are playing crucial role in security of society. In spite of these Indian security industry facing lot of challenge such as non-standers products and services, lack of skilled and trained manpower, low awareness of security need and pirated security software,” informed Jinesh shah.

Key Considerations

“Thoroughly inspecting the expanse to be covered, identifying the loopholes, designing the technologies and solutions to be deployed, obtaining the required permissions and sanctions, installation and implementing solutions as per designed plan, running a test, imparting training to the personnel in charge of the controls,” suggested Aditya Khemka. “The Safe City concept was designed to help augment city agencies, support response in man-made or natural disasters, and encourage collaboration between public and private agencies – all in an effort to build an urban environment that strives to achieve the safety and security of its resident while fostering future opportunity and growth. It’s critical for these Safe City solutions to have the capacity for information to be shared easily and quickly with key stakeholders. Additionally, considerations must be made for the storage needed to keep video data, analytics required to gather intelligence, and how data from multiple devices will be analyzed,” suggested Tom Dodrill. He further added, “Another consideration is reliability. Having cameras, video management and other sensors deployed that do not provide best-in-class capabilities, may fail at critical times,,or require constant maintenance is worse than not having any systems in place at all. Critical time response maybe lost as operators hunt for operational cameras or look for data that is not available. Remember, Safe City systems are only

as reliable as the least reliable components and compromising on low-quality and lowreliability systems may impact the reliability of the Safe City solution.” “Today, the world is facing threats and dangers in various forms ranging from natural disasters like earthquakes, flood and hurricanes to social risks like terrorism and cyber-attacks which compromises the safety of society. It is important to safeguard not just the citizens but data against theft for a sustainable society. Biometric and surveillance solutions are beneficial tools for border security and protecting financial assets, improving productivity and the quality of life. These cutting-edge solutions and technologies are designed to cope with threats at all levels from individual to families, enterprises and governments by not only preventing a crisis but also by reinforcing crisis response capabilities,” suggested Takayuki Inaba. He further added, “Biometric solutions measure and analyse human physiological or behavioural characteristics for authentication or identification purposes. It identifies people by personal traits such as the characteristics of their faces or fingerprints which makes the technology extremely intelligent, precise, quick and reliable.” “NEC has successfully deployed our biometric solutions across a vast number of governments and enterprises for the authentication and identification purposes in sectors such as aviation, banking & financial services, government (civil, criminal, citizen IDs - Aadhar) and hospitality,” informed Takayuki Inaba. “When it comes to city surveillance, the focus is often upon securing the areas with high foot traffic and vulnerable regions with basic cameras. But that is not enough. Some cameras are not equipped to spot details such as faces and license plates which are essential for the authorities,” suggested Sudhindra Holla. He further added, “As an end-to-end provider, we try to keep such loopholes in mind. Axis has a no backdoor policy which means that the data collected by our systems cannot be hacked. One should keep in mind that every video recorded on the streets has to be secure, without which, one cannot claim to provide 100 % security. Such end-to-end solutions are a must to keep cities secure.” “The key considerations for Safe Cities/ City Surveillance would include making the police forces well-equipped with modern technologies. This would assist

in improving the internal security and in managing disorders. Another concern is the procurement of modern equipment for perimeter protection, cyber patrol and vehicle management systems,” said Ashwin Amarpur. According to Divanshu Gupta, “The key considerations are Technology Staretgy,Economic Power,Threat Perception (Safety & Security) and Urbanization culture.” “One of the key factors to consider when choosing the right technology or integrations for a city surveillance application is prioritizing incoming data that is generated by each device. Every device has a purpose, but in a large, complex structure like a municipality, it can be easy to lose track of all the moving parts. Moreover, these devices typically generate much more information than is necessary for investigative inquiries or emergency response, making it more difficult to sort and act on critical data,” said Steve Birkmeier. He further added, “To ensure that only the most relevant and “eventful” information is reaching law enforcement, policy or business decision-makers, a software-based, openplatform event management hub with an intuitive central interface is ideal for city security officials to make sense of real-time or recorded data and work together to enact cohesive initiatives that benefit citizens, public institutions and private organizations.” According to Jinesh shah, “In safe city surveillance key factor is CCTV camera with integration of software also the road safety is equally important. Over speed has to be monitored. Day by day use of good quality CCTV cameras especially IP Cameras increase

due to which data storage and protection of data is very important. So the demand for Data storage with cyber security in increasing.”

New Tech Trends

“The latest technology trends includes 4K Resolution cameras, NVRs, Cloud video surveillance, Video Management Systems, and smart analytics such as facial detection, fog/ defog, intrusion, tripwire, abandoned, missing, etc. are some of the trending solutions in city surveillance of late,” informed Aditya Khemka. “While certainly not new, systems integration is emerging as an increasingly necessary tool to unify systems and make situational awareness easier for operators to manage and respond. Cameras and video management are more effective when connected to video analytics, automatic license plate recognition (ANPR), data analytics, and other security systems and data systems to form a comprehensive Safe City solution,” opined Tom Dodrill. He further added, “As an example, analytics now have the capability to provide advanced warning to police and other city officials when crowds may be gathering for a protest or, worse yet, a flash mob intent on wreaking havoc in a particular area of town. This information allows the Safe City system operator to view cameras in the area to identify any anomalies. These sets of information allow the operator to understand what is occurring and send resources to the area.” “On a day-to-day basis, video analytics software can aid city officials in analyzing traffic patterns, identifying critical choke points, congested areas and when certain areas are seeing the most traffic. This information can then be used to address the issues and improve quality of life for citizens,”

45

observed Tom Dodrill. “Intelligent management integrated with information and communication technology (ICT) and active citizen participation drive the creation of smart and safe cities. Moreover, integration and collaboration of resources and authorities are a key requirement for any city to work smartly. At the same time, giving its citizens access to smart energy and make better use of scarce resources is also a key attribute of a smart city. But what forms the foundation of any smart city is the ‘safety’ of its citizens and resources,” explained Takayuki Inaba. He further added, “With our experience over the years, we have witnessed many instances where the use of biometric solution has aligned processes, reduced theft, increased security and hence service reliability. In India, NEC’s Face Recognition Solution (FRS) is utilized at Lemon Tree Premier, New Delhi. Situated in the upcoming Aerocity Hospitality District, in close proximity to the international airport, Lemon Tree Premier was required to have a top-end surveillance and security system. Another such deployment is with Surat City Police in a city surveillance environment where FRS technology has contributed to bring the crime rate down by 27% in the city. We also deployed the same technology at Krishna Pushkaram which is one of the largest festivals in Andhra Pradesh for large scale crowd control and traffic management. The FRS technology not only helps them with blacklist management but white list management for privileged guests as well.”

“The new generation safe city/city surveillance systems are designed to address not only typical law & order aspects but also to address concerns of traffic management, emergency response management, multi-agency coordination system, distress call management system etc. We see clear trends in customers asking such integrated systems. However, the basic need remains law & order control,” said Avinash Trivedi.

Axis Cameras come with Axis Camera Application Platforms (ACAP) which enables you to download applications onto your Axis cameras and video encoders which increase system performance with added analytics and other smart functionalities.

“Video Analytics is an essential element nowadays for technically advanced Safe Cities projects as it can provide a complete package of solutions which are useful for different purposes like Perimeter Protection, Detection of Suspicious Incidences, Traffic Management, Counting, etc. Also, Video Analytics ensures that the cost invested on Manpower is reduced to a great extent and the overall return on investment for the government is high,” suggested Ashwin Amarpur.

with E-challan smart Traffic enforcement,” suggested Divanshu Gupta.

Sudhindra Holla,

Country Manager, India & SAARC, Axis Communications

He further elaborated, “There are available surveillance technologies to protect Crime ,Person,Property, Before possible issues and also after the real issues to understand and take the right decision and to cooperate among entities public and private. Just as in the broadcast or consumer markets, the transition from SD (standard definition) to HD is pretty much established, and now, the trend is moving to 4K. With 4K resolution, you can cover a larger area and also capture details of scenes like a face or a car license plate number with 1 camera. This solves the current issue of having many cameras or use PTZ camera for specific areas and cannot see other areas at the same time. 4K can expand the potential of security cameras such as sharing same security system for multi-purpose by multi-users.” “Video event management software, or VEMS, is a new breed of video surveillance analysis that is a step above traditional video management systems. These systems consolidate alarm and event notifications from a large variety of third-party device manufacturers and streamline the monitoring process to make event detection less cumbersome for security teams. What is even more exciting is the breadth of integrations that are possible with these open platforms, making it less prohibitive for a business or organization to explore investing in new, innovative devices such as biometric access, facial recognition, building automation or license plate recognition, and connect their information back through one user interface.” said Steve Birkmeier. “Due to implementation of IP camera in is possible that we can integrate the CCTV camera with the new technology such as Missing object, face recognition, video analytics and IoT, ” suggested Jinesh shah.

Innovative Solutions

Spectra Enhanced is ideal for most surveillance applications particularly where camera direction stealth and direct look down capability is needed.Esprit Enhanced is ideal for applications with above the horizon viewing requirements. Both Spectra and Esprit and have been a mainstay in municipal surveillance networks worldwide,” said Tom Dodrill. He further added,“Finally, our next-generation VideoXpert Video Management System offers city officials a way to intuitively control and display critical security and video data in a single platform. VideoXpert’s plugin architecture allows integration to third-party systems to provide a unified situational awareness platform. New Initiatives

“Safe city projects, irrespective of the other factors, require few common things- a real time visibility and quick response system as an absolute imperative. These are inherent outcomes of an integrated security system and centralized information system. An integrated public security should provide three elements- Monitoring, communication, and mobility solutions. All these aspects are linked with a Command and Control Centre to mitigate the risk across the city by providing actionable intelligence and enabling speedy security incidence resolution,” opined Aditya Khemka. According to Takayuki Inaba, “There are five technologies that are required to secure cities today: sensing, authentication, monitoring, control, and cloud computing.” Sensing - Cutting-edge sensors and video authentication technology that use RFID and wireless sensor networks encompassing the land, sea, air and outer space make it possible to provide a variety of data concerning all aspects of urban life for advanced authentication. This data can be effectively visualized, accumulated and used in many scenarios, such as for early detection of earthquakes to enable preparedness throughout the Smart City, for monitoring of long-distance highways through the use of optical cable sensors, and for advanced biometric recognition in which video data is also used. Authentication - The data acquired through sensing is continuously authenticated via location and condition validity checks. Since the amount of urban authentication data in a Smart City is enormous, advanced NEC authentication technologies renowned for high-speed processing and precision are employed to ensure genuine real-time authentication. Monitoring - Along with monitoring the normalcy of sensing, authentication, control and other conditions, information is reported in real time to the required locations upon detection of anomalies. For example, when an anomaly occurs, this is relayed along with video or other data in real time to the required locations to allow effective prevention of crime, accidents and most critically for the Smart City as a whole disasters. Control - Monitored data is analyzed in real time and the optimum control information is determined and transmitted. For example,

air conditioning inside buildings can be controlled more precisely through the use of location information, resulting in the creation of an environment that is better adapted to the needs of the people who work there. Cloud computing - Robust remote backup functions capable of withstanding local disasters can provide required information without users being aware of the location of hardware and data. Moreover, rapid and flexible response is enabled for services whose contents change according to the situation and the lapse of time. For example, residential services can be tailored to individual districts and resources can be flexibly allocated for maximum effect when large amounts of processing are required. “Apart from installing surveillance systems and enhancing physical security, we need to ensure that public areas are always under scrutiny. Many market places and tourist areas are subject to criminal activities. Instead of waiting for an incident to take place, it should be made mandatory for all streets to have advanced security that can be monitored by the police department,” observed Sudhindra Holla. He further added, “For example, Cubbon Park in Bangalore, which is one of the most visited tourist areas has recently been equipped with CCTV cameras to avoid anti-social elements. These kind of initiatives are essential to ensure security in public places.”

Securing Cities

Today, cities face a wide range of threats and to reduce the impact of these threats, it is critical for the authorities to capture real-time information on what is happening in and around the city. Rise in terrorist activities, growing crime rates, data thefts, remote monitoring, growth of public infrastructure, increasing IT spending, government initiatives and increasing security spending are some of the factors boosting the surveillance market in India. Tier 1, 2, 3 and even 4 are showing pronounced growth in numbers in the past few years.

Key Factors

The key considerations for safe cities is to create the best law & order situation where security & safety is ensured to all the citizens and the commuters to have 24*7 best / smart traffic solutions & crime control infrastructure facilitating proactive security through monitoring at centralised command & control centre & proper patrolling by the police. The rapid emergency response at any part of the city within a minimum & acceptable time frame needs to be catered. Hence, a befitting Integrated Security Design comprised of adequate/ optimum resources in terms of equipments & technology along with systems involved, PCR Vehicles and trained manpower available without shortages, should be in place as per Risk Profile and crime probability & gaps analysis in a Smart City.

New Trends

Modern governments are using various tools like cyber security, smarter policing using the situational awareness platform, integration of technologies like number plate identification, face recognition and lawful interception amongst others. In fact one the key technology being implemented today is the face recognition software which is being deployed in public areas like bus stands and railway stations. The Indian Police is deploying CCTNS systems across various states which by the integrated use of face recognition identifies the blacklisted person as soon as he comes near the camera view, post which the police command and control room can be easily notified about this activity, hastening the response process.

Future Roadmap

By 2025, India will account for 36 out of 440 emerging cities in the world according to McKinsey Global. Presently, around 31% of India is urbanized; by 2050 India will have 68 cities with a population of more than 1 million, 13 cities with more than 4 million people and 6 megacities with a population of over 10 million. At the same time, urbanization is causing a huge pressure on civic infrastructure leading to increase in slum areas, traffic congestion and also fueling the ever widening gap between the haves and the have-nots. Cities that attract economic power and foster growth also spawn crime, violence & and an overall sense of insecurity. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the rate of incidences of crime (cognizable offenses under IPC) has seen a major upward trend. Foremost among these is rape, the number of incidences of which has risen by 873% since 1953. It is followed by kidnapping and abduction (749%) and murder (250%) There are several small security elements that can together create a desired safe and secure city scenario, these are listed as follows: • Video Surveillance and monitoring at identified vulnerable locations • Detection tools against CBRNe threats • 3D GIS Mapping of the City • GPS based Patrol services • Dedicated hot line for women complaint cell and other reports that need immediate attention; • Capacity building and modernization of various paramilitary forces; • Traffic management; • Sustainability & Accountability through information sharing and community involvement; • Better Urban design & planning; E.g.; well lit streets, squares, parks etc • Up-gradation of slums; • Management of Public Spaces; • Education & health facilities for poor; • Use of local crime surveys and crime audits • Partnership between Government, civil Society & industry

he global market for enterprise and IP storage used for video surveillance is booming due to many factors including 4K and HD CCTV.Among the reasons behind this strong growth is end users placing greater value on video surveillance data because of video’s increasing use for business intelligence applications and as evidence to defend against lawsuits. In each case, investment in storing video for more time or at a higher quality can provide end users with an increased ROI. As for technologies, network attached storage (NAS) is forecast to increasingly compete with storage area network (SAN) solutions. Technological development of NAS is making it more comparable in terms of performance with SAN. NAS is also typically more cost-effective to install and maintain compared to SAN. With price being a major factor in the buying decision of video surveillance, there will be strong growth prospects for NAS solutions over the coming years. India’s storage solutions market According to Sandy Sun, Vice President & General Manager for Asia-Pacific and China Sales, Seagate Technology,“The rising need for advanced security, India’s smart cities agenda, growing IT infrastructure, increasing IT spending, surging need for video analytics and remote monitoring are the trends that have been driving the video surveillance market in India.” According to Seagate Surveillance Trends Report, Indian organizations use 249 surveillance cameras per organization on average and it is only expected to grow. 88% of the respondents agreed that surveillance footage will increase by whopping 79% and 63% of the respondents said that they would invest in new data storage systems/solutions. There are three main drivers that are driving the surveillance storage needs, which include, • Legal compliance for longer retention period: The increasing need of BFSI

58

segment to keep their footage for a longer period of time is driving the need for larger storage capacity hard drives. • Higher resolution video quality: The evolution of recording quality from 720p to 1080p, and now even 4K requires higher storage capacity. • Footage archiving requirement: For security reasons, a lot of footage data are required to be archived, where enterprise storage solutions or archiving drives are used for the backup. According to Khwaja Saifuddin, Senior Sales Director – South Asia, Middle East and Africa, Western Digital,” The Indian market for surveillance and CCTV is fast changing with new technologies being introduced coupled with the technological advancement being more towards software based solutions than hardware based. The latest technology which is making its presence felt is the IP camera.” According to 6Wresearch,India’s video surveillance market is projected to grow at a CAGR of over 13% from 2016 to 2022.

Latest Innovations

“As video surveillance deployments have been increasing, it becomes all the more necessary to efficiently scale and store the video footage for the enterprises. We believe that an ideal storage combination for efficient video analytics requires data storage that is optimized for storing video footage. This doesn’t simply mean the drive should have high capacity and high speed,” observed Sandy Sun. She further quoted, “As per the Seagate Surveillance Trends report, while 68% of the respondents plan to purchase larger capacity storage media, 57% of the respondents plan to invest in surveillanceoptimized or video-optimized storage.” “Seagate is the first to pioneer a purposebuilt drive for surveillance systems a decade ago. When Seagate calls it ‘optimized,’ it means the drive offers specific technologies that can best manage the data workload and maximize the value of the data in that specific application,” informed Sandy Sun. She further explained, “For example, the surveillance market is moving more and more over to the NVR surveillance systems with multiple hard drives and HD cameras. Seagate’s latest innovation is its 10TB SkyHawk drive for surveillance systems that help large storage solutions in network video recording (NVR). Seagate SkyHawk uses rotational vibration sensors

We endeavor to keep our solutions updated to match newly introduced CCTV cameras, DVR’s and NVR’s, high definition and analytical cameras which provide automatic image analysis and intelligent detection technology. The purpose is to offer vertex output, compatibility and optimum experience to the users. Also, our latest offerings of My Cloud™ Pro Series, network attached storage and WD SSD line-up will cater to growing individual and SMEs needs.” According to Brandon Reich, Senior Director of Surveillance Solutions, Pivot3, “Today’s IT and surveillance leaders are constantly on the lookout for new ways to gather, manage and store data to run their departments more efficiently, as well as maintain budgets and contribute to the overall success of the business. Video surveillance is a valuable tool to help maintain a secure environment and drive actionable business intelligence, and as such, the amount of video surveillance data and the relative importance of that data is increasingly rapidly. But of course, video is only valuable when it is captured and readily available for review when needed. The most significant challenge in today’s market is how modern organizations can address the growing need for video storage capacity, performance and resiliency in a cost effective manner.” He further added, “Innovations in the market have resulted in new options beyond traditional IT storage methods, such as direct attached storage (DAS), network attached storage (NAS), and storage area networks (SAN). converged infrastructure (HCI) delivers a simpler, more practical and cost-effective alternative, reducing datacenter costs and complexity by integrating SAN and server virtualization capabilities into a single software-defined infrastructure. The advantage of HCI is that it provides the benefits of enterprise-class IT infrastructure (think of the robust performance, resiliency, efficiency and scalability IT users expect) without the high cost and complexity.”

Challenges and Opportunities

“Video Surveillance is an incredibly dynamic industry that continues to grow at an exponential rate. However, through Seagate Surveillance Trends Report, we found out that due to limited storage capacity, 34% of the organizations were keeping the video surveillance footage for less than 60 days. We see this as an opportunity for the storage industry to come up with efficient and intelligent storage solutions,” said Sandy Sun. She further added, “The growing use of video surveillance in business has also created new challenges related to managing surveillance systems and storing the rapidly increasing volume of raw video footage. System maintenance is the top video surveillance storage challenge for end users (47%).” “Tackling the same, Seagate’s latest 10TB SkyHawk helps to minimize dropped frames and downtime with 180TB/year workload rating, 3× the workload of a desktop drive and backed by a 3-year limited warranty. 44% of users cited data recovery as a challenge to which Seagate offers a complete protection plan that covers drive replacement and data recovery services. This protection plan covers data recovery services at a fraction of the cost of data recovery services purchased after the event, and keeps systems in the field longer and reduces post-deployment expenses. Seagate’s new portfolio of 10TB high capacity drives aim to counter the capacity challenges faced by 44% of the end users,” suggested Sandy Sun.

“Digitization today has created greater horizons given the stupendous rate with which we are creating and storing data. People now have options for higher capacity drives to suit their changing lifestyles. WD identifies it as a significant opportunity to cater to this growing need wherein consumers look forward to solutions fulfilling mass storage digitally. An increased focus on security, both at personal and national level is leading to a surge in demand for storage in surveillance devices, this is where WD sees the potential to further build on its category of WD Purple surveillance storage products. The creation of massive scale data centres, storing gigantic volumes of digital information generated due to efforts in digitalization and smart cities is yet another opportunity to leverage.” said Khwaja Saifuddin.

“The external data storage market in India has crossed significant $100 million mark in Q4 2015 due to the investments from telecom, banking and government sector requirements, according to the research firm IDC. The will help maintain a steady growth in terms of compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for 2015-2020 for

the external enterprise storage systems market.,” informed Khwaja Saifuddin. According to the research firm Gartner, India is a growing market for cloud services due to its large number of consumers with Internet access. As Internet access, e-commerce, mobile device and application usage and business adoption continue to expand, the growth in cloud related spending in India should outpace that in the rest of the world and possibly reach $1.9 billion by 2019. Khwaja Saifuddin. further added, “Though despite optimistic predictions there are few challenges we need to address. A more ongoing problem is the country’s Internet infrastructure (i.e., bandwidth constraints and fibre optic weaknesses) and the inconsistency of its power supply in some areas. India also presents a mixed policy environment for storage and cloud services. Some elements of the environment remain undefined (e.g., India lacks a formal data breach notification rule), while others are clearly positive (e.g., there do not appear to be tariffs on software downloads) and some challenging (e.g., government procurement, which though a major source of IT spending is reportedly a complex, multifarious process).” He further added “However, government is acutely aware of these situations and its ambitious Digital India program aims to address some of the infrastructural weaknesses. Technology underpins many of India’s development and growth programmes, and digital storage is at the heart of nearly every initiative.” “As the value of video surveillance data continues to grow in applications ranging from marketing and sales, to operational monitoring to facility utilization, it is more important for users to look beyond traditional storage methods to save costs and expand system capabilities,” observed Brandon Reich. He further added, “The market for HCI is exploding because of the significant growth in data capture and need for organizations to reduce costs and complexity in data centers. HCI is causing a fundamental shift in the IT sector, and

Key Considerations

“As the use of video surveillance cameras grows, so does the demand for higher image quality and longer retention times. This means there are increasing requirements on video surveillance camera, storage, and management solutions for businesses. Storage is not just peripheral, but foundational. Protecting people and property requires more than simply observing crimes,” opined Sandy Sun. Today’s video surveillance systems require storage that can: • Scale to larger storage capacities • Record higher frame rates without dropping frames • Add cost-effective storage for longer retention periods • Handle higher resolution video from megapixel and multimegapixel cameras • Store and manage videos centrally from a distributed implementation • Scale to accommodate future growth “Our service and quality plans have always been with the end user in mind. Our customer centric approach is a fundamental part of our transformational work, and we use it as something that underpins our processes and services and standards,” said Khwaja Saifuddin. He further added,”One of the things the service standard opens you up more to is the early engagement with users, so

the time is ideal for video surveillance stakeholders to learn about the benefits of this increasingly popular technology segment.” “HCI is even ideal for mid-market applications. In fact, small-to-mediumsized deployments of up to 200 cameras can realize the IT benefits of SAN at a price point competitive with DAS servers and NVRs. Built-in server failover and advanced fault tolerance technology protects system performance and ensures data is always accessible, even during hardware failures. These highly sought after features are typically only found in large, complex enterprise surveillance implementations. The delivery of this type of functionality to this market also opens up new opportunities for today’s IT savvy systems integrators,” suggested Brandon Reich.

you can work on the feedback and improve your offerings. Western Digital has a widespread presence in India with its distributors’ branch offices present across 58 locations in India. Further, the company has over 100 drop points & WD Express service touch points. Also, WD offers toll free technical support to get important updates and warranty information about storage drives which benefits the customers directly.” informed Khwaja Saifuddin. He further added, “We ensure that we maintain strong bonds with our channel partners by spending considerable time with our local channel partners in educating, training and addressing their concerns. They help us understand the trends and demands of different regions and are a vital link between us and the users. In order to establish and build relationships with the channel and partner community, we organize a variety of programs and offers.” “Our latest offering “myWD Certified Surveillance Storage Provider Program” is designed to provide comprehensive benefits for the security and surveillance channel network. The myWD Certified Surveillance Storage Provider Program is a tailor-made initiative that aims to offer training, sales support, value added benefits and incentives to security and surveillance system integrators, installers, solution and service providers to help them enhance their business opportunities and profitability. We enhance the knowledge base of the resellers, making them more involved and showing them various paths to diversify in surveillance and security market opportunities if they find the traditional PC markets stagnant, thereby increasing the portfolio.” said Khwaja Saifuddin.

Future Trends

According to Sandy sun, “As video surveillance continues to evolve across both public and private sectors, there’s an increasing opportunity to capitalize on the emerging trends.” Some of the key trends are; Network cameras as emerging stars The new fixed-dome and 180/360-degree IP network cameras are the fastest growing product segment, and the city surveillance and utilities/energy sectors are vertical markets that will be benefitted using these. Crowd sourced video surveillance With the increasing prevalence of mobile users, crowd sourced video surveillance data will be on the rise. Suitable surveillance storage The rigours of today’s video surveillance systems require true 24x7x365 operation.

enterprises.” According to Khwaja Saifuddin, “We at WD are focused on the next generation technology and solution in the datacenter space to cater to the different needs through customization. Products such as WD Gold datacenter hard drive will best fit the capacities and work load capabilities required for the most demanding datacenter environments as it is designed for a multitude of datacenterspecific applications offering reliability, utility and robust performance.” The need is to quickly process data and provide faster performance. Video surveillance backup and video data recovery Recovery of data is most critical in the present surveillance environment. While no system is impervious to failure, there are some options that give us a fighting chance to recover critical data. Video management systems and video bandwidth management With the rise of high-definition video and IP cameras, it’s more important than ever to take into account the bandwidth needed to run your system at maximum efficiency. The most beneficial tool here is video management software (VMS), with benefits such as reduction in bandwidth requirements, optimization of network resources, and decrease of storage needs. Video analytics While there are a number of embedded low-end video analytics applications, offered as “free” features, there is a need for more advanced analytics. There are multiple considerations when it comes to analytics, with each area projected to continue growth well into the future.

JANUARY 2017

“Increasing need for secured infrastructure, rising government focus on smart cities and growing IT spending by corporates have fueled the growth of Video Surveillance Camera market in India. The IP surveillance market is witnessing buoyant growth today and, more importantly, according to 6Wresearch, the demand for CCTV and Surveillance products is expectedto be sustained with very consistent growth over the next 4 to 5 years,” observed Khwaja Saifuddin. He further added, “With growing number of industry verticals and changing business trends the adoption of surveillance cameras is increasing. Intelligent applications incorporated in them like facial recognition, people counting, vehicle license plate recognition etc. will allow users across segments like city surveillance, retail, banking etc. to benefit from the surveillance products by gathering additional details from these cameras. These factors will drive demand for surveillance equipment.” “This demand also contributes to the growth of the surveillance storage market in India and WD contributes to this booming need. WD offers WD Purple Surveillance Storage Solution (WD Purple drive) which is optimized for 24/7, round-the-clock surveillance environments and consume low power to offer long-lasting benefits,” said Khwaja Saifuddin. He further added, “Also, due to the massive internet penetration, arrival of IoT and big data, demand in data center infrastructures has surged sharply. According to Gartner, the value of the Indian data center infrastructure and solutions market will show a 5.2 percent increase year-on-year, totalling $2 billion in 2016. The research firm also believes that this segment will also be the fastest growing market, as spending is forecasted to increase 5.9 percent in 2016. With increased focus on mobility and big data activities in India and exceptional demand of data storage, storage market in India will also grow while the network storage is adopted amongst more Indian

62

According to Brandon Reich, “We’ll continue to see an influx in the number of cameras — especially high-resolution models and 360-degree devices — and the ever-growing increase in captured data. At the same time, customers of all sizes and in all markets will continue to find new ways to capture and leverage information from multiple devices — including video surveillance cameras, access control systems, video analytics and other Internet of Things devices — to develop reports and identify trends that not only enhance security, but optimize internal operations. Storage technologies will need to be able to maximize access to this data, and ensure robust protection and failover.” He further added, “Another trend is that IT technologies will help modern businesses realize the next evolution of the security operations center and move multiple mixed workloads onto a single platform for greater efficiency and ease of management. Pivot3 has worked with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) to ensure robust video capture while streamlining its IT infrastructure to make the county more efficient. BCSO implemented virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), long-term storage, and video storage arrays on an expanded Pivot3 HCI appliance. The consolidated architecture makes it easier for stakeholders to manage hundreds of new workstations for county staffers while reducing its server count by 75 percent. We expect to see more organizations following a similar path in the near future, which will deliver new levels of data protection and efficiency to a wide range of businesses across the globe.

Business Situation The SteadyServ iKeg system provides real-time intelligence for beer retail establishments and distributors. This solution provides retailers with up-to-the-minute visibility into their current inventory of keg beer sold, as well as consumption metrics for a particular brand of beer. In addition, the iKeg system provides for synchronization with the respective beer distributor’s order management system to ensure that a retailer’s inventory consistently meets customer demand. SteadyServ’s solution relies upon NFC tags to associate kegs of beer from the point of distribution to the retailer. While seeking to procure a custom-designed NFC tag product that would be amenable for attaching to a beer keg, SteadyServ connected with Identiv.

64

Technical Situation The iKeg solution required pairing a beer keg’s iKeg sensor with an NFC tag. SteadyServ Technologies needed an NFC label solution that they could trust – a solution that would meet the necessary technical and environmental criteria (i.e., chip memory, the physicality of attaching a label to a beer keg, etc.), while also providing on-demand printing/encoding. Solution SteadyServ worked with Identiv to devise a custom NFC tag, providing a solution that conveniently attached to a beer keg, similar to the way in which airline baggage tags are attached to checked-in luggage. The tag was designed for best-read range and to meet the memory requirements for the iKeg

Think Before Jumping a Signal. High-end Cams Will Hunt You Down.” Bengaluru Police Deter Crime & Traffic Violation with Vehant’s RLVD & ANPR System Bengaluru Police deploys Vehant’s RLVD & ANPR System for detecting traffic violations SUBMITTED BY vehant

engaluru being the capital of Karnataka is the center of India’s high-tech industry. It has a population of about 8.42 million which makes it the third most populous city in India. The growing security concerns due to its dense population were recognized by the state police who were looking for an intelligent traffic enforcement solution for the city to address the better traffic management and crime prevention concern. The project focused on monitoring the critical areas of the city like busy junctions etc. The idea was to help the local authorities improve the overall operational efficiency and reduce manual intervention. The ARLVD system and ANPR system was an ideal addition to the city’s extensive security network. A comprehensive plan for beefing up security and Traffic enforcement around the city was approved by the state police. The scope of project encompasses Intelligent Traffic Management System. The plan included Automated recording of the license plates of vehicles moving across the city for detecting vehicles violating the traffic light and also for automated detection of hot list/Stolen / Suspected vehicles using Automated Number Plate Recognition System (ANPR) based Traffic violation detection system.

JANUARY 2017

www.asindia.in

TrafficMon - Red Light Violation Detection System from Vehant (formerly KritiKal SecureScan) was extensively trialed and tested before approval and is now successfully running at multiple junctions of the city. Trafficmon is a video based Red Light enforcement system which comprises of overview camera and the ANPR camera. Overview camera shows the entire violation scenario and ANPR camera captures the image of number plate of the violating vehicle. The system takes input from traffic light and starts capturing red light violation as soon as traffic signal turns red. It does not require lane disciplined traffic for violation detection and can capture four wheeler as well as two wheeler violations. TrafficMon - Speed Violation Detection System is successfully running at Tirupati. This system uses only high frame rate

66

Camera and IR light and calculates the speed of a moving vehicle in real-time, at the same time it captures multiple images of the violating vehicle. The OCR algorithm with the system does number reading. The violation data with evidence data is sent in real time to the command and control Centre at Police. The violator details including address are fetched from the database shared by the Road Transport Authority (RTA) for further challan generation and posting to offenders. VehiScan - Automatic License Plate Recognition System was approved and adapted to meet the needs of the security apparatus. VehiScan is based on proprietary intelligent OCR based algorithm capable of capturing the license plates of all the vehicles moving even at high speed, and thus provides high through-put even during peak traffic. It also highlights the hot-listed or stolen or any customized category vehicle and raise an alarm locally as well in central control room. The most significant feature of this product is its efficiency of recognition of the license plates even when there is low visibility. It works in 24x7 environment providing high detection and recognition accuracy and helps the law enforcement agencies to catch the culprit in real time. It is also able to perform well in cluttered city scenarios with a mix of four and two wheelers. “The cameras have sensors which detect when the red light turns on or off. There is also an in-built loop in the system that calculates the speed of the vehicle based on the motion captured in the video. The installation is also done in a strategic manner as per the system requirement to ensure that all vehicles that cross the stop line and halt are also booked,” said a senior city traffic police official. The cameras are also installed at the Brigade Road junction on MG Road and running successfully. This is the first time RLVD cameras are being used for traffic management in the city; but it has already been adopted in other major Indian cities. “We have seen a considerable increase in the number of challans issued for signal violations and rash driving at these points. However, as in the case of conventional challans, serving them becomes a challenge when out-state vehicles are involved,” said another official. The fine amount for vehicles crossing the stop line is Rs 100. The penalty for jumping the red light is Rs 300 for two wheelers and Rs 400 for cars. The traffic department has termed this project a success, and people at its receiving end are positive about putting such system in place.

Top Technology Trends in the Security Market to Look for in 2017.

The shops are getting busy, and, depending on which hemisphere you live in, it’s either time to turn on the central heating or break out the shorts and shades. But it’s also time to look ahead to 2017 and wonder what it might have in store for us.

By Active Pixel

Johan Paulsson,

CTO, Axis Communications

JANUARY 2017

n a global level the world is going through turbulent times, with conflicts, political uncertainty, an ongoing refugee crisis and a somewhat fragile economic recovery from the most recent financial downturn. At the same time, technological developments continue unabated, with high-speed networks, big data and deep learning moving beyond that initial phase of just being marketing buzz words to enabling new and improved security offerings. Similarly, we expect the socalled ‘Internet of Things’ to be much less of a novelty and more of the fabric of our daily lives. However, that means manufacturers of internet-enabled devices will have to step up and take much more responsibility for the level of default security they ship with. All of these factors are likely to fuel demand for increased security, both physical and online.

www.asindia.in

Security as a Service

As many other technologies have done, we expect customers will stop looking

68

at physical security as simply being a collection of hardware and software connected to a network. Instead, we think they will start to see their security as a service – remote and professionally hosting and monitoring of video transmitted from the customer’s premise. Whether by themselves, or more likely by sector-specific specialists who can not only take away the burden of managing the complex systems involved, but also reduce the costs of keeping those systems up to date and secure. This will not only free up internal resources which could be better focused elsewhere, but also improve the service level of the security system, enable better device management, and strengthen cyber security processes. On the topic of cybersecurity, we see an increased use of tools and practices that make network video a less vulnerable to attacks. In general, wider use of preand post-installation tools (such as Axis Site Designer, for example) will help in on-going monitoring and maintenance of systems.

Integrated Solutions

The security industry will continue its trends of offering more specific solutions to particular problems, rather than one-size fits all hardware/software. In the end, customers aren’t looking to buy a camera, or a video management system (VMS) – what they really want is to reduce shoplifting, or make sure only certain people can access the cash office, or keep track of potential threats in an airport. Although the word ‘solutions’ gets bandied around by technology companies a lot, for once this really is the most apt term. The convergence of hardware and software as well as preinstallation and post installation tools

as mentioned above, into end-to-end solutions will be able to address specific security problems. They will consist of high-performance cameras, storage and access controls tightly integrated with video management and analytics tools. This approach will be easier for customers to purchase, install and implement, while offering a great return on their investment.

Expanded Use of Analytics

As part of this, we see that while high quality video footage is a core feature of modern security cameras, ultimately that information needs to be assessed and analyzed before a decision can be made to respond to its content. The recent advances in camera technologies, such as thermal imaging and enhanced lowlight capabilities have been significant steps forward. But in the end, they just generate more footage that needs to be watched/reviewed. So, much like how tools have been developed to sift through the huge pools of numerical/ text data that is being captured every day, the security industry has been working hard on video analytics software that can work in real time to help professionals make informed decisions. We expect to see 2017 as the year when these new camera capabilities are combined with real-time analytics to address several security challenges, including facial recognition, forensic analysis and perimeter protection.

Deep Learning

With all this data being gathered, we are seeing deep learning technologies coming to the fore. These use pattern recognition software to ‘learn’ about different kinds of behaviors as seen

through the multitude of security cameras installed around the world. Techniques involving deep learning and artificial intelligence will see broader utilization within the security industry. The benefits are that although all customers are different, the environments and locations they are based in tend to fall into the same general categories, with people exhibiting the same general behaviors. Once those behaviors have been ‘learned’ the patterns that underlie them can be shared, enabling the system to flag up when something unexpected occurs. We see this as only the beginning and a very exciting space to keep an eye on.

Beyond Video

However, we know that physical security doesn’t just involve surveillance of people/places/objects. It is also about physical access control, one and twoway communication and managing

emergency situations – and often managing this from a significant distance. So, to extend the concept of integration even further, 2017 should be the year when security cameras work hand in glove with intelligent doors, intercoms and speakers, both locally and remotely. That means one simple system that can manage them all, in real time – enabling customers to see, hear and talk to the people in/near their buildings.

Cyber security

As mentioned above ‘The Internet of Things’ has evolved from buzzword status to mainstream reality, but not without its challenges. While we still think the idea of millions of IP-enabled devices is an exciting prospect for the future, 2016 gave us a sobering reminder of the pitfalls of not properly securing all those internet-connected fridges, DVRs and unfortunately security cameras.

Given that most of those devices are just plugged in and switched on by customers, it is down to manufacturers to take responsibility to ensure they are secure out of the box. Axis has always taken its customers’ security seriously, but we will hopefully see 2017 as the year when all manufacturers make this a priority. We will continue to strengthen our existing offerings and make it easier for our customers to keep their networks and devices secure. We think the Internet of Things should be about better security, and more efficient businesses, organizations and cities thanks to “smart” cameras, door stations and audio equipment with network connectivity. 2017 will add more ‘smarts’ to those devices, while also enabling customers to focus on what they do best and allowing security specialists to improve the services they provide.

To be in number one position among the fifty is indeed a noteworthy achievement. It does reiterate Hikvision’s firm commitment toward ushering in a more safe and secure world. What are the latest developments at Hikvision with specific reference to India market? Q

JANUARY 2017

www.asindia.in

A Very recently we had launched the world famous Pyronix Intrusion Alarm System in India to protect homes, offices, banks, commercial establishments, retail outlets, educational institutions and military installations. This was launched at the ‘Security Show’ in New Delhi. Hikvision’s Pyronix Intrusion Alarm Systems come in different models. The most basic alarm consists of one or more sensors to detect intruders, and an alerting device, or Siren, to indicate the intrusion. In addition to the system itself, security alarms can be coupled with a monitoring service. In the event of an alarm, the premises control unit contacts a central monitoring station. Operators at the station see the signal and take appropriate preventive or pre-emptive action, such as contacting property owners, notifying police, or dispatching private security forces. We also launched the New PanoVu Series Panoramic Cameras. The cameras provide 180- and 360-degree, distortion-free, ultra-high-definition video, seamlessly integrating video from multiple sensors in one unit.

74

Add to this the PanoVu’s powerful Smart Tracking abilities, linkage to PTZ and zooming into images at up to 36x optical and 16x digital, its user-friendly installation and configuration, and its ultra-low light performance, and the result is the best equipped high-end panoramic solution on the market. For the fifth year in a row, Hikvision has reinforced its position as the world’s largest supplier of CCTV & Video Surveillance Equipment. Hikvision recently has also received some prestigious awards and honors for its outstanding contributions to safety and security of mankind.

Q What are your observations about the Smart City Mission?

A The ‘Smart Cities’ Mission is an innovative and new initiative by the Government of India to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life of people by enabling local development and harnessing technology as a means to create smart outcomes for citizens. We find the mission laudable as it will lead to improving the infrastructure, quality, comfort and security of the urbanites. It provides all security solutions providers in India a positive nation building role to play. We are excited about the scope and prospects that this noble initiative has to offer. Q What is the Hikvision’s strategy for implementing Safe City projects in India?

Add sense and structure to video data Video analytics inside of the camera create an intelligent video security system, using metadata which already means adding sense and structure to video data already at the point of capture (at the edge) and enabling each camera to operate independently. Decentralizing intelligence in this way eliminates a single point of failure (central analytics server), meaning that if one camera or encoder fails, the system maintains full performance. With built-in (edge) analytics, each camera in the network can then interpret captured video data and alert users of potential security threats in real time based on configurable triggers. Take appropriate action faster, easier and more efficiently Video analytics at the edge will allow users to instantly and easily retrieve specific footage from hours of stored video. Also, by focusing on the point where data is captured and only streaming the data that is needed, network strain and storage requirements are significantly reduced. Data streamed can include all image data, or the metadata alone, depending on the specific

application requirements. The end results are relevant, immediate alerts and key statistics, enhancing the accuracy of the video security system and reducing the margin of error that comes with 24/7 human live monitoring and in a much more efficient way. Highest reliability All Bosch video analytics algorithms are developed in-house together with the automotive division to deliver the most reliable and robust solution for automotive applications, like autonomous driving, as well as network video security solutions. Essential Video Analytics Small and medium businesses, large retail stores, commercial buildings and warehouses will benefit from Essential Video Analytics. This suite of video analytics delivers 15 different video analytics algorithms that can be used for smart movement detection as well as business analytics. It allows a single camera solution to be used to enforce health and safety regulations, intelligent intrusion and idle-object detection; as well as to perform crowd density assessment. It also provides useful business metrics for various applications, like retail, such as people counting

and crowd density information. Intelligent Video Analytics Cameras equipped with Bosch’s stateof-the-art Intelligent Video Analytics have the added capacity compared to Essential Video Analytics, to deliver the highest level of accuracy for mission critical applications such as perimeter protection for airports and critical infrastructures, ship tracking and traffic monitoring. Enhanced with 17 different video analytics algorithms, Intelligent Video Analytics stands out through its ability to differentiate between genuine security events and known false triggers such as challenging environments where snow, wind, rain, water reflections and distance could make images even more difficult to interpret. This ensures that costly false alarms are minimized and enables users to focus on what is most relevant to them.

Honeywell puts Building Controls in Occupants’ Hands Mobile software application enables building occupants to tap into Internet of Things capabilities to address common building issues including temperature settings, access control Submitted by Honeywell

B

uilding occupants long have grappled with who to call when their work area is too cold, or how to gain access to a facility when they forget their access card at home. Honeywell recently announced a new mobile software application for building occupants that addresses these common frustrations. JANUARY 2017

www.asindia.in

The Honeywell Vector Occupant App combines the convenience of today’s mobile devices with connected building features to give users more control over their comfort levels and ability to securely move about the work place. The new software is the latest example of Honeywell’s leadership in the Internet of Things around connected buildings. The new app provides digital identification

84

and integrates with core building functions, including access and comfort control, to enhance building occupants’ experience with the touch of a screen. The app’s access control capability eliminates the need for physical cards or fobs and gives users secure access via their smart phones. In addition, occupants can quickly and easily communicate temperature discomfort for real time adjustments instead of the more time-consuming process currently used of seeking out a facility manager or making a phone call to request temperature changes. Facility managers, in turn, benefit from immediate insight into where and how comfortable occupants are, so they can make adjustments more quickly and easily. And, the app’s digital identification and access control capabilities make it easier to manage occupant credentials, eliminating the need for keeping track of and replacing misplaced access cards. Backed by a cloud-based architecture and enabled by HID Global’s Seos credential technology, the Honeywell Vector Occupant App works independently of underlying building systems, enabling

widespread use and adoption. Administrators within facilities deploying the app access a cloud portal to manage users and features such as corresponding user identification and credentials. Users who download the app must receive an invitation from the administrator in order to gain access to its features. “Smart phones and apps continue to enhance our everyday lives, from allowing us to hail a cab to giving us direct insight into where we stand on a restaurant waiting list. We’re now applying these same concepts of insight and control to how one interacts with a building,” said Aseem Joshi, regional general manager, Honeywell Building Solutions, India. “Buildings are alive and teeming with opportunities for users to interact with them—if you can make the right connections. The Honeywell Vector Occupant App facilitates these interactions, so users can create their best experiences.”

The Honeywell Vector Occupant App is part of Honeywell’s approach to connected services, which leverages the connectivity of buildings to improve how they operate and the experiences they offer for those who visit and work within them. The app is also the latest addition to Honeywell’s mobile software strategy, a significant part of the company’s efforts to provide the latest technology innovations to help keep facilities safe, secure, comfortable, productive and energy efficient. Future enhancements and capabilities are planned for the app that will take advantage of building connectivity. The Honeywell Vector Occupant App currently works with Apple and Android products and is available on iTunes and Google Play.

Buildings are alive and teeming with opportunities for users to interact with them— if you can make the right connections. The Honeywell Vector Occupant App facilitates these interactions, so users can create their best experiences

Aseem Joshi,

The app currently features three layers, including: • Digital Identification – Eliminates the need for plastic badges or temporary tags and solves the issue of outdated photo IDs by providing an up-to-date photograph. • Convenient Access Control – Builds on the app’s digital identification feature, offering mobile-based access control that can easily be managed by a facility, and eliminating the need for tracking and replacing cards or fobs. Occupants, in turn, have one less item to carry, and can open doors from greater distances than traditional key cards and fobs. • One-Click Hot/Cold Calls – Provides a quick and direct way for occupants to indicate when their work areas are too hot or too cold, and to receive confirmation that their issues are being addressed. Facility managers are alerted to occupants’ discomfort in real time, and can view call location, watch for patterns and quickly make adjustments to satisfy occupants.
