Das Jahr 2013 war für Yadegar Asisi und das Team bisher sehr ereignisreich. Wir schauen unter anderem auf das erste Jahr mit dem Mauer-Panorama am Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin zurück. 2013 bedeutet auch das zehnjährige Bestehen unseres ersten Panoramahauses in Leipzig. Hier fing 2003 das Abenteuer mit dem Medium Panorama nach ersten Schritten so richtig an. Der alte Gasometer in Leipzig, der umgebaut und als Panometer neu genutzt werden konnte, war und ist seitdem ein faszinierendes Experimentierfeld – EVEREST, ROM 312 oder AMAZONIEN haben in den ersten zehn Jahren über 2,2 Millionen Besucher begeistert und alle bestärkt, neue Projekte zu schaffen. Das zweite Jahrzehnt ist mittlerweile eingeläutet und seit August hat auch die Stadt, in der der Künstler Yadegar Asisi aufwuchs, ihr eigenes Stadtpanorama: LEIPZIG 1813. Das große Interesse der Besucher und der Medien am neuesten Panorama freut uns ungemein! Im nun beginnenden zweiten PanometerJahrzehnt erfährt die „asisi Welt der Panoramen“ eine neue Dynamik. Bald eröffnen neue Panoramahäuser in Deutschland und im Ausland. Es werden dann sowohl bereits bestehende Panoramen wie z.B. ROM 312 ausgestellt als auch derzeit entstehende Kunstwerke. Vor kurzem war Asisi zum Beispiel auf Tauchgang für ein KorallenriffPanorama und im Herbst recherchieren er und sein Team zum französischen Mittelalter. EIN JAHR EMOTIONALE MAUER-ERLEBNISSE Wie die Zeit vergeht! – Vor über einem Jahr, am 23. September 2012, eröffnete direkt am Checkpoint Charlie das asisi Panometer Berlin mit Yadegar Asisis Panorama DIE MAUER. Mit seinem bislang persönlichsten Zugang zu einer Panorama-Installation verdichtet der in der DDR aufgewachsene und ab 1978 in Westberlin lebende Künstler seine Alltagserfahrungen im geteilten Berlin zu einer atmosphärischen Momentaufnahme der 1980er. Yadegar Asisi: „Als ich mich fragte, wie das Lebensgefühl neben diesem Monstrum eigentlich war, erschrak ich mich geradezu vor meiner Antwort. Es war irgendwie normal geworden. Wir hatten uns arrangiert.“

Was unsere Besucher und unser Team bewegte – Ein Rückblick: Das wohl denkwürdigste Ereignis war der Besuch der First Lady Michelle Obama am 19. Juni 2013 im Rahmen des Staatsbesuchs des US-amerikanischen Präsidenten Barack Obama in Berlin. Nahezu 50 Jahre nach der weltberühmten „Ich bin ein Berliner!“Rede von US-Präsident John F. Kennedy 1963 erlebte Michelle Obama mit ihren Töchtern und in Begleitung von Prof. Joachim Sauer, dem Gatten von Angela Merkel, die als Kunstwerk wiedererstandene Berliner Mauer am Checkpoint Charlie. Yadegar Asisi, der die Staatsgäste persönlich führte, war tief bewegt: „Dass das Panorama als Programmpunkt beim Besuchsprogramm ausgewählt wurde, freut mich sehr. Meine Erfahrungen zeigen, dass auch nachgeborene oder geografisch weit entfernte Besucher die Themen deutsch-deutsche Teilung und Kalter Krieg mit dem Panorama einfühlsam nacherleben – wie zum Beispiel die Töchter von Michelle und Barack Obama heute.“

Die Gespräche mit Besuchern des MauerPanoramas und viele Einträge aus mittlerweile zehn prall gefüllten Gästebüchern bestätigen dies. Hier nur einige Beispiele:

Sollte Dauerausstellung hier am Checkpoint Charlie bleiben!“ Panometer als Ort der Interaktion Seit der Eröffnung des asisi Panometer Berlin, das als temporäre Ausstellungsrotunde konstruiert ist, hat sich die Ausstellung nach und nach verändert. Im Vorraum zum Panorama können die Besucher auf beschreibbaren Wänden ihre Gedanken zum Thema „Freiheit“ notieren: Schnell waren die

ersten Flächen vielsprachig und ausdrucksstark gefüllt und werden immer wieder durch neue, leere Tafeln ersetzt. Die beschrifteten Wandelemente werden an der rückseitigen Konstruktion des Panoramabildes montiert und wachsen innerhalb der Rotunde immer weiter nach oben. Ganz im Sinne von Yadegar Asisi werden viele Besucher auf diese Weise Teil des Kunstwerks. Ebenso erfreulich war das große Feedback auf den Fotoaufruf, der Anfang 2013 gestartet wurde. Über 200 Fotografien von ca. 50 Privatpersonen erreichten das Team im Frühjahr. Eine Auswahl dieser vielfältigen persönlichen Erinnerungen an den MauerAlltag – im Osten und im Westen – ist seit Ende April in der Zeitzeugen-Fotoausstellung ebenfalls im Vorraum des Panoramas zu erleben. Somit wird Yadegar Asisis Panorama um weitere sehr persönliche Perspektiven ergänzt. Ebenfalls unterschiedliche Perspektiven auf das Leben und die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit der Berliner Mauer eröffnete die 10. Zeitgeschichtliche Sommernacht der Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur, die am 4. September inmitten des Panoramas stattfand. Unter dem Motto „Über die Mauer… Lebenswege – Lebensthemen“ sprachen die Schriftstellerin und Ausstellungskuratorin Annett Gröschner, der Maler und East-SideGallery-Künstler Thierry Noir und Yadegar Asisi mit Winfried Sträter. Der Austausch mit den Gästen der Sommernacht zeigte einmal mehr: Der Kunstraum des Panoramas ermöglicht es, das Erlebnis einer vergangenen Zeit ins Heute zu transportieren und ergänzt damit auf einzigartige Weise die Vielfalt von Angeboten zur Erinnerung an das geteilte Berlin. up

ASISI PANOMETER LEIPZIG

ERÖFFNUNG AM 3. AUGUST – TOLLER ZUSPRUCH IM PANORAMA LEIPZIG 1813 Fulminant ist »LEIPZIG 1813 – In den Wirren der Völkerschlacht« im August im Leipziger Panometer gestartet. In den ersten Wochen besuchten täglich etwa 2.000 Besucher das weltgrößte Rundbild zur Stadt Leipzig direkt nach der Völkerschlacht im Oktober 1813. Obwohl Yadegar Asisi in Leipzig aufwuchs, war es für ihn zunächst allerdings nicht naheliegend, sich mit dem Thema zu befassen: „Für mich war die Völkerschlacht vor allem präsent im Denkmal, nie inhaltlich“, so der Künstler. „Ich hatte lange Zeit keinen Zugang dazu, bis ich mir die Frage stellte, was Leipzig 1813 war und welche Beziehung die Stadt zur Schlacht hatte. Ich kam zu dem Schluss,

das Ereignis Europas aus der Perspektive von Leipzig und seiner Bürger darzustellen. Auf keinen Fall wollte ich ein Schlachtenpanorama schaffen.“ Asisi nimmt Leid, Elend und die Zerstörungen nach der Schlacht zum Anlass, um ein 360°-Panorama des bedrängten Leipzig und geschundenen Umlands 1813 zu zeigen. In Verbindung mit der begleitenden Ausstellung zeigt sich seine Intention: ein bildgewaltiges Statement gegen Krieg und alle Kriegsverherrlichung. Den Künstler und sein Team freuen nicht nur differenzierte Presseberichte wie z.B. bei „titel, thesen, temperamente“, dem ARD-Kulturmagazin: „Ein Gegenentwurf zum zwei Kilometer entfernten Kriegsdenkmal… Hier wird nicht die Befreiung von Napoleon bejubelt, sondern unter den Folgen der Schlacht gelitten… Ein Rundumpaket Geschichte, das Staunen macht und nachdenklich stimmt…“ Auch die begeisterten Rückmeldungen der Gäste bestätigen Yadegar

Asisi: „Wir sind zurück aus Leipzig und tief beeindruckt. Unsere Erwartungen sind noch weit übertroffen worden... Wir sind überwältigt. So macht Geschichte Spaß. Selbst Kinder stehen mit staunenden Augen davor“, so eine der ersten Besucherinnen. Mitte Oktober 2013 ist der „heiße Herbst“ des Gedenkens in Leipzig. Im asisi Panometer z.B. mit einer Theatercollage von Maja Chrenko und Lesungen im Rahmen des Leipziger Literarischen Herbstes oder Buchpräsentationen. Daneben finden regelmäßig öffentliche und buchbare Führungen statt. Parallel organisieren verschiedene Akteure in der Stadt und in Markkleeberg bei Leipzig verschiedenste Veranstaltungen. Herausragend sind sicher der Staatsempfang des Freistaats Sachsen mit internationalen Gästen oder die Reenactments mit über 6.000 historisch Uniformierten aus ganz Europa. kg www.asisi.de

3D-MODELIERER UND BILDGESTALTER FÜR DAS TITANIC-PANORAMA

DREI JAHRHUNDERTE SÄCHSISCHE LANDESHAUPTSTADT AN EINEM TAG

Seit zwei Jahren arbeitet Reto Assisi, Neffe von Yadegar Asisi, am dreidimensionalen Modell für das Panorama der gesunkenen Titanic. Der Betrachter befindet sich ca. 4000 Meter unter Wasser und schaut direkt auf das Wrack. Die Beleuchtung ist daher ein Kunstgriff, da in dieser Tiefe kein Sonnenlicht existiert. Die Dunkelheit erhellt eine in die Panoramaszenerie integrierte Lichtinstallation, die die Geheimnisse und Geschichten der Titanic preisgibt.

Auf dieser Basis hat Reto – unterstützt vom Titanic-Spezialisten Dominik Tezyk – zunächst die intakte Titanic als 3D-Modell rekonstruiert:

Der größtmögliche Detaillierungsgrad war notwendig um die Voraussetzungen für die richtige Bildsprache zu schaffen... ...Sogar jede einzelne Niete habe ich modelliert. Dann wurde das 3D-Modell der Titanic von mir virtuell zerlegt und demoliert – so wie beim richtigen Wrack. Anschließend kamen alle Details wie Rost, Schmutz, Algen usw. hinzu“, so der Absolvent der Berliner UdK.

Vor allem dort, wo der Besucher im Panorama Elemente aus der Nähe betrachten kann, sind viele Arbeitsstunden investiert und viele Einzelheiten eingepflegt worden: „Der Detailreichtum wächst, je näher man sich am Zuschauer befindet. Es gibt eine drei Meter hohe Zone am unteren Bildrand, die sehr umfassend ausgearbeitet wird, da sich hier die Betrachter ganz dicht dem Bild nähern. Es werden Kleinstteile, wie Messer, Gabeln, Tassen und sogar das Titanic-Logo zu sehen sein“, begeistert sich Reto Assisi. Im weiteren Verlauf setzt er das 3D-Modell in die richtige Perspektive und übergibt die Vorarbeit dann Yadegar Asisi, der es in zig Schritten künstlerisch ausarbeitet und vollendet. kg

»Die Stadt Dresden scheinet gleichsam nur ein bloßes Lustgebäude zu seyen, worinnen sich alle Erfindungen der Baukünste miteinander vermischen.« Was Johann Michael von Loen 1718 schrieb, fixierte der Venezianer Canaletto um 1750 in 14 Ansichten auf Leinwand. Heute in der Dresdner Gemäldegalerie zu bewundern, geben sie fotografisch genau das Stadtbild von Dresden in der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts wieder. Wesentlich für den idealen Dresden-Blick sind das breite Elbtal mit der mächtigen Augustusbrücke und die prächtigen Großbauten entlang der Elbe. Die bedeutendsten existierten schon zu Canalettos Zeiten: u.a. die Brühlschen Herrlichkeiten, Residenz mit Hausmannsturm, Hofkirche und die alles überragende, elegante Frauenkirche. Wie Perlen auf einer Schnur geben sie „Elbflorenz“ seine weltberühmte Silhouette. Auch Yadegar Asisi war vom Mythos der Stadt so fasziniert, dass er ihr 2006 sein DRESDENPanorama in der barocken Architektur widmete. 2012 überarbeitete und bereicherte er das Stadtpanorama um weitere Szenen, Anekdoten und Geschichte(n) aus der Zeit Augusts des Starken und seines kunstsinnigen

Sohnes, die Dresdens barocke Blütezeit prägten. Besucher, die heute Dresden mit der berühmten, nach 1945 und 1990 wiedererstandenen Altstadt besichtigen, sollten sich einen Besuch des asisi Panoramas »DRESDEN – Mythos der barocken Residenzstadt« in Dresden-Reick nicht entgehen lassen. Zwei S-Bahnstationen vom Hauptbahnhof entfernt gewinnt der Betrachter nur hier eine atemberaubende Rundumsicht der vollständigen Barockstadt mit einer fulminanten begleitenden Ausstellung. Mit diesem Wissen ist der Besuch des heutigen Dresden umso faszinierender – man erkundet wie ein Detektiv Kontinuitäten und Brüche im Stadtbild. Für eine kleine Stärkung sorgt das Bistro im Panometer oder z.B. der Sophienkeller am Opernplatz. ENGLISH VERSION Page 1 Dear Reader, 2013 has been a very eventful year so far for Yadegar Asisi and the team. Amongst other things we are looking back on our first year with the Wall Panorama at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin. 2013 is also the 10 year anniversary of our first Panorama house in Leipzig. It was here that – after some first steps – the adventure with the medium of Panorama really took off in 2003.The old Gasometer in Leipzig, which was converted and was able to be used as a Panometer, was and remains a fascinating field of experimentation: EVEREST, ROME 312 and AMAZONIA enchanted over 2.2 million visitors in the first 10 years and encouraged all of us to embark on new projects. Our second decade has begun and the city where the artist Asisi grew up has been able to boast its own city panorama since last August: LEIPZIG 1813. WE are delighted about the huge interest in the latest Panorama shown by visitors and the media. As we enter the second Panometer decade the “asisi World of Panoramas” is experiencing a new dynamism. New Panometers are soon to be built in Germany and abroad where existing panoramas, such as ROME 312, will be exhibited along with projects we are currently working on. It was only recently that Yadegar Asisi went diving for a Coral Reef project and this autumn he and his team will be doing research about the French Middle Ages. DOPPELTE ILLUSION

Wer das Panorama DIE MAUER im asisi Panometer Berlin aufmerksam betrachtet, entdeckt darin Fragmente einer Mauer-Malerei von Yadegar Asisi aus dem Jahr 1986. Während er mit seinem Panorama von 2012 die Mauer viele Jahre nach ihrem Fall wieder erlebbar und sichtbar macht, so ließ der Künstler damals mit seinem „Mauerdurchblick“ diese Grenze zumindest optisch verschwinden. Mit dem Bau der Berliner Mauer wurde auch der auf die Sankt-Michael-Kirche zuführende ehemalige Luisenstädtische Kanal in eine Grenzsperranlage umgewandelt und das Engelbecken vor der Kirche zugeschüttet. Von der 1851 erbauten und im Zweiten Weltkrieg teilweise zerstörten katholischen Kirche, die im Ostteil der Stadt lag, war von Westberlin aus, wo die meisten Gemeindemitglieder lebten, nur noch der obere Teil mit dem Turm zu sehen. Beim Blick vom Westen, vom Kreuzberger Oranienplatz aus, „schwebte“ der Kirchturm über der Mauer, weil diese den Blick auf Engelbecken und Kirchenportal verdeckte. Yadegar Asisi lebte in diesem Kiez, den er auch im Panorama DIE MAUER darstellt. Er ging oft über die Waldemarbrücke, über die die Mauer verlief und deren Bogen über den mittlerweile begrünten Kanal zugemauert war.

„Ich wollte Raum und Zeit überwinden, die Trennung visuell verschwinden lassen.“ so Yadegar Asisi zur Motivation für seine 1986 geschaffene Illusionsmalerei. Fast schien es so, als könne man, wie früher, wieder geradewegs auf die Kirche zugehen – wenn man vom Oranienplatz aus dem passenden Blickwinkel zur Waldemarbrücke schaute. Mit Pinsel und Farben projizierte Asisi auf die Kreuzberger Mauerseite den versperrten Blick: Auf die über der Brücke verlaufenden Berliner Mauer malte er das Kirchenportal und das Blau des Himmels und auf dem zugemauerten Bereich unterhalb ergänzte er das Engelbecken.

Später kamen die Akteure des „Weißen Strichs“, junge, aus der DDR ausgereiste Künstler, die mit ihrer Kunstaktion gegen die Gewöhnung an die Mauer in Westberlin protestierten. Als Akt der „Re-Visualisierung“ zogen sie ihren weißen Strich auch mitten durch Asisis Gemälde. Als die Berliner Mauer im November 1989 fiel und wenig später abgebaut wurde, blieb eines der beiden von Asisi bemalten Segmente erhalten. Auf einer Auktion in Monaco ersteigerte der italienische Geschäftsmann Marco Piccinini das 2,6 Tonnen schwere Betonsegment und machte es wegen seiner geschichtsträchtigen Bemalung Papst Johannes Paul II. zum Geschenk. Seit Herbst 1990 ist das Mauerstück in den Vatikanischen Gärten aufgestellt. up facebook.com/asisi.berlin

Page 2: BEHIND THE SCENES ASISI PANOMETER LEIPZIG: THE OPENING ON 3 AUGUST – GREAT RESPONSE TO THE PANORAMA LEIPZIG 1813 »LEIPZIG 1813 – Amidst the Confusion of the Battle of the Nations« experienced a great start in the Leipzig Panometer in August. In the first few weeks around 2,000 visitors attended the world’s largest panorama in the city of Leipzig, which portrayed events directly after the Battle of the Nations in October 1813. Although Asisi grew up in Leipzig, it was not natural for him to tackle this topic: “For me the Battle of the Nations was particularly present in the monument, but never in content”, said the artist. “For a long time I wasn’t able to relate to it, until I asked myself what Leipzig 1813 was and what relationship the city had with the battle. I arrived at the decision to portray this European event from the perspective of Leipzig and its citizens. I did not want to create a battle panorama. The great feedback of the visitors has reinforced my approach.” Asisi uses the suffering, misery and destruction after the battle in order to show a 360° Panorama of a besieged Leipzig and the oppressed surrounding area in 1813. In conjunction with the accompanying exhibition his intention is revealed: a stunningly visual statement against war and against all glorification of war. The artist and his team were delighted by press reports such as this review f rom “titel, thesen, temperamente”, the ARD culture magazine: “An alternative concept to the monument two kilometres away… It does not celebrate the liberation from Napoleon, instead we experience the suffering of the battle… A complete package of history that causes astonishment and makes you think…” The enthusiastic responses of the visitors also justify the work of Yadegar Asisi: “We’ve just got back from Leipzig and were very impressed. Our expectations have been greatly exceeded... We are overwhelmed. It makes history so much more interesting. Even children stood looking at it with wideeyes”, said one of the first visitors. In the middle of October 2013 the “autumn of thought” will take place in Leipzig. In the asisi Panometer, for example, there will be a theatre collage by Maja Chrenko and readings as part of the “Leipziger Literarischen Herbst” literary festival and book presentations. There are also many public and bookable tours. At the same time various protagonists in the city and in Markkleeberg near Leipzig are organising different types of events. A particular highlight is the official reception of the Free State of Saxony with international guests along with re-enactments with over 6,000 people in historic uniforms from all over Europe.up www.asisi-international.com INSIGHTS INTO THE WORK OF RETO ASSISI: 3D MODELLER AND IMAGE DESIGNER FOR THE TITANIC Reto Assisi, nephew of Yadegar Asisi, has been working on a three-dimensional model for the Panorama of the sunken Titanic for two years. The observer finds themselves around 4000 metres under water, looking directly at the wreck. Therefore the lighting involves a particular strategy as there is no sunlight at such depths. The darkness is illuminated by a light installation integrated in the Panorama scenery, which reveals the secrets and the stories of the Titanic. On this basis Reto – supported by the Titanic specialist Dominik Tezyk – first of all reconstructed the intact Titanic as a 3D model: "The greatest possible level of detail was necessary in order to create the conditions for the correct imagery I even modelled every single rivet. I then dismantled and demolished the 3D model of the Titanic virtually – so it looked like the actual wreck. Then the other details such as rust, dirt, algae etc were added”, said the graduate of the Berlin University of the Arts. Many working hours have been invested in particular where the visitors can view elements close up in the Panorama and many details have been incorporated: “The richness of detail grows the closer you are to the audience. There is a three metre high zone on the lower margin of the image, which has been very extensively elaborated, as the observer comes very close to the image at this point. It will be possible to see small elements such as knives, forks, cups, even the Titanic logo”, said Reto Assisi. A YEAR OF EMOTIONAL WALL EXPERIENCES How time flies! – A year ago on 23 September 2012 the asisi Panometer Berlin opened directly at Checkpoint Charlie with Yadegar Asisi’s Panorama THE WALL. This is his most personal connection with a Panorama installation as the artist who grew up in the GDR and lived in West Berlin from 1978 has condensed his everyday experiences of a divided Berlin into an atmospheric snapshot of the 1980s. Yadegar Asisi said: “As I asked myself how the experience of life alongside this monstrosity actually was, I was startled by my answer. It had somehow become normal. We had come to terms with its existence.” That moved our visitors and our team – A retrospective: The most memorable event was the visit of the First Lady Michelle Obama on 19 June 2013 as part of the state visit of the American President Barack Obama in Berlin. Almost 50 years after the world famous “Ich bin ein Berliner!” speech by President John F. Kennedy in 1963, Michelle Obama and her daughters accompanied by Prof. Joachim Sauer, the husband of Angela Merkel, experienced the re-emergence of the Berlin Wall as a work of art at Checkpoint Charlie. Yadegar Asisi, who gave the official guests a tour, was deeply moved: “I was delighted that the Panorama was chosen as part of the official tour. My experiences show that even visitors born after the event or geographically remote from the division of Germany and the Cold War can feel empathy with the period portrayed in the Panorama –as demonstrated by the daughters of Michelle and Barack Obama.” This is confirmed by discussions with the visitors of the Wall Panorama and many of the comments written in ten guest books. Here are just a few examples: “Now I understand the Wall.” “You really get goose pimples and you learn to appreciate the way things are now…” “History straight to your heart!” “Molto forte ed emozionante. (Very powerful and exciting.)” “Very impressive! The exhibition should remain here at Checkpoint Charlie!” The Panometer as a place of interaction: Since the opening of the asisi Panometer Berlin, which has been constructed as a temporary exhibition rotunda, the exhibition has developed over time. In the foyer of the Panorama the visitors can write their thoughts on the subject of “freedom” on walls: the first areas were quickly covered in very expressive multilingual comments and are constantly replaced by new, empty boards. The wall elements with the inscriptions have been installed on the rear construction of the panorama image and are growing upwards inside the rotunda. In keeping with the idea of Yadegar Asisi many visitors have become part of the art. The response to the request for photographs, which began in early 2013, was equally gratifying. The team received over 200 photographs from around 50 members of the public. A selection of these diverse personal memories of everyday life living near the Wall – in the East and West – have been exhibited in the contemporary witness photo exhibition which has also been taking place in the foyer of the Panorama since the end of April. Therefore Yadegar Asisi’s Panorama has been supplemented by many very personal perspectives. The 10th “Zeitgeschichtliche Sommernacht” of the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship (Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur), which took place in the Panorama on 4 September, also offered different perspectives of life and the artistic treatment of the Berlin Wall. Under the heading “Over the Wall… Journeys through Life – Essential Issues”, the writer and exhibition curator Annett Gröschner, the painter and East-Side- Gallery artist Thierry Noir and Yadegar Asisi spoke with Winfried Sträter. The discussion with the guests of the event showed once again: the artistic space afforded by the Panorama enables the experience of a past age to be transported to the present and therefore complements the diverse range of ideas recalling divided Berlin in a unique manner. up

wrote in 1718, was set down in 14 scenes on canvas by the Venetian artist Canaletto around 1750. Today they can be admired in the Dresden Picture Gallery and they precisely depict the cityscape of Dresden photographically in the middle of the 18th century. The wide Elbe Valley with the impressive Augustus Bridge and the magnificent large constructions along the Elbe River are essential for an ideal view of Dresden. The most important buildings already existed at the time of Canaletto: including the Brühlschen Herrlichkeiten – a selection of buildings and collections - the Royal Palace with the Houseman’s Tower, the Hofkirche and above all, the elegant Frauenkirche. Like pearls on a string they provide the “Florence on the Elbe” with its world famous silhouette. Yadegar Asisi was so fascinated by the myth of the city that in 2006 he devoted his DRESDEN Panorama to Baroque architecture. In 2012 he revised and enriched the city panorama with several scenes, anecdotes and stories from the time of August the Strong and his art-minded son, who both shaped Dresden’s Baroque heyday. Visitors who come to Dresden today with its famous old town, which was reconstructed after 1945 and 1990, should also visit the asisi Panorama »DRESDEN – Myth of the Baroque Royal Seat« in Dresden-Reick. Just two S-Bahn stops from the main train station the observer can experience a breathtaking panoramic view of the complete Baroque city with a fantastic accompanying exhibition. This makes a visit to modern Dresden even more fascinating – you can investigate continuity and breaks in the cityscape like a detective. While he is giving people the opportunity to view and experience the wall with his Panorama of 2012, his painting “Mauerdurchblick” (Looking through the Wall) made the border disappear, at least optically. Following the construction of the Berlin Wall the former Luisenstadt Canal which led to St. Michael’s Church was transformed into a border fortification and the Engelbecken water basin in front of the church was filled in. From West Berlin, where the majority of its parishioners lived, it was only possible to see the upper section with the tower of the Catholic church. The church which was built in 1851, was partially destroyed during the Second World War and was situated in the Eastern part of the city. When looking from Oranienplatz in Kreuzberg, West Berlin, the church tower “hovered” over the Wall because it covered the view of the Engelbecken and church portal. Yadegar Asisi lived in this part of the city, which he also portrays in the Panorama THE WALL. He often went over the Waldemarbrücke, over which the Wall ran and whose arch was bricked up over the canal. “I wanted to overcome space and time, to make the separation disappear visually.” said Yadegar Asisi about the motivation for his illusion painting created in 1986. It almost seemed as if, as in the past, you could once again walk towards the church – if you looked from Oranienplatz from the correct perspective to the Waldemarbrücke. With his brush and paint Asisi projected the obstructed view on the Kreuzberg district side of the Wall: on the section of the Berlin Wall which ran through the bridge he painted the church portal and the blue sky and he added the Engelbecken to the bricked up area below. Later came the members of the “Weiße Strich” campaign, young artists who came from the GDR and who protested with their art campaign against tolerance of the Wall in West Berlin. As an act of “Re-visualisation” they painted a white line through the centre of Asisi’s painting. As the Berlin Wall fell in November 1989 and was dismantled shortly afterwards, one of the two segments painted by Asisi remained intact. At an auction in Monaco the Italian businessman Marco Piccinini bought the 2.6 ton concrete segment and gave it to Pope John Paul II as a present due to its historical value.
