FIRE SAFETY

Behind your guest room door, you will find a floor plan of the guest room corridor on which your guest room is located. Please study it carefully and then take a moment to walk this corridor and familiarize yourself with it. Take special notice of the number of doors to reach the exit and which direction to turn, as the corridor may have smoke in it making it nearly impossible to identify the exit door from any other door in that area. Also, note the location of the fire extinguishers, fire alarm pull boxes and the automatic closing fire/smoke doors.

Please acquaint yourself with the following procedures. They will help you in the unlikely event of an emergency:

• Pre-plan your escape route. Locate and check out both the nearest exit door and the stairwell. Count the guest room doors between your room and the exit. Remember, the balcony may also be used as an exit.

• Know where you placed your guest room key. You will need your key in the event that you wish to re-enter your room during an emergency. Get in the habit of leaving your key in the same place, preferably on the night stand.

• If you discover smoke or fire:

1. Call the Front Desk immediately.

2. Feel the door. If it’s hot, don’t open it.

3. If the door is not hot, place your foot against the door and open it slightly.

4. Look and smell for smoke and odors

Remember, you may be able to exit the stairwell by crawling. There is always less

smoke near the floor.

5. Leave your room and close your door.

6. If you are able, pull the nearest fire alarm box.

7. Don’t use elevators. Use exit stairways or fire escapes.

8. Don’t panic! If you see no fire or smoke in the corridor, head to the nearest fire exit and proceed to ground level and out of the building.

9. If the halls are too smoky, stay in your room.

a. Fill the bathtub with water; however, never get into the tub.

b. Stuff towels in all openings and around all doors. Use wet tissue to insulate small openings.

c. Wet down anything that is hot, such as doors and walls.

d. Open glass doors only at intervals for fresh air. If smoke becomes dense, stick your head out of the door or window.

e. Await help from the fire department.

TORNADO PROCEDURES

If you observe a tornado or hear the warning sirens for a tornado, take the following steps immediately:

• Find Shelter! Go to the basement or a place that is on the lowest floor in the middle of the Lodge, like an interior hall.

• Avoid windows and doors. Move away from outside walls and stay clear of windows, doors and other glass.

• Protect your head. Try to take shelter under something strong that can protect your head, like a

heavy table or a workbench. At the very least, use your arms and hands to protect your head.

• Stay put until either the threat passes or you are advised that it is all clear.

• If damage has occurred, remain away from these areas until they are declared clear by emergency personnel. Keep away from exposed wires.

• If you are caught in your room with no time to get out, go into the bathroom, close the door and sit on the floor or in the tub.

In accordance with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, we provide a “smoke free” environment to park guests.

LEGEND OF THE MOHICANS

Famed in history and legend, the Mohican Indians occupied a territory along the Hudson River, in what is now New York State, when the first Europeans arrived.

One of the Algonquin tribes, the Mohicans frequently waged war on the Mohawks who occupied territory immediately to the west of them.

They used nature in constructing their dwellings. Planning ahead several seasons, Mohicans planted two rows of saplings at a future house site, and when the trees had reached sufficient height, they bent the tops over to form wall studding and roof rafters for the timber and bark structure to follow.

Driven west, the tribe was decimated. The first explorers coming up the Muskingum River and seeking land in the Ohio country found a settlement along a branch of the river near what is now Loudonville, Ohio. That branch is now the Mohican River. Remnants of the nation settled throughout this area. Some joined other tribes at Greentown, a huge Indian settlement about three

miles northeast of the present Mohican Lodge. Another Chief, known to settlers as Mohican John, lived near what is now Jeromesville.

Before he wrote the novel Last of the Mohicans in 1826, James Fenimore Cooper is said to have journeyed to this area seeking background information. An area of the Mohican Forest, near what is now the intersection of Route 3 and 97, reputedly forms the background for several scenes in the book.

Today, descendants of the Mohicans live near Green Bay, Wisconsin, and in neighboring Canada. The Mohegan, or Mongegans, a related tribe that inhabited land along the Thames River in Connecticut, intermarried with settlers and lost their identity.

Still, in the Mohican Forest, located in the Mohican Valley at the headwaters of the Mohican River, the name lives on, unsullied by civilization and memorialized by thousands of acres of forest and sparkling waters.

Isn’t it time you lived a legend?
