Everyone Heard of the Hodag?

Rhinelander’s Legend

In Rhinelander you will hear of Hodag Park. Business places have adopted the name along with school athletic teams.

Gene Shepard, a Rhinelander pioneer and lumberman, started the Hodag mania in 1896 when he showed a horrifying picture to his unsuspecting friends. A party of fearless loggers, Shepard himself included, tried to capture the monster in a cave by putting him to sleep with a chloroform-soaked sponge tied to the end of a 30-foot bamboo pole. You can still see where the beast was kept when it wasn’t prowling the countryside at night, devouring white bulldog—a Hodag delicacy.

Shepard’s elaborate hoax was to get people talking, and now, 90 years later, they’re still talking about his monster, whose hairy body was made of wood and ox hides. The armor of horns had previously been hosted by various bulls, and bent steel rods made up the vicious claws. One thing is for certain—you’ll only see this creature in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, where the legend of the Hodag is alive and well.

The railroad made possible a logging industry in an area perfect for the harvesting of timber. Rhinelander became a terminal and supply point for dozens of logging camps to the north, toward the Michigan border.

The timber barons of the turn of the century are gone now, but dozens of smaller logging operations supply pulpwood and sawlogs for the manufacture of paper, cardboard, particle board, plywood, paneling, lumber and a variety of other wood products. Modern timber management and reforestation ensures that Rhinelander will always have forests for recreation and businesses alike. If you would like

to learn more about the timber industry and the local area, be sure to visit the following places of interest.

OGGING USEUM

In memory of the hardy lumberjacks who cut and felled the great forests of the north is the "Rhinelander Logging Museum," housed in a faithful reproduction of a logging camp. Displays include the tools and equipment of lumberjack crews.

Ahlstrom/Munksjo

A two-hour, self-guided auto tour of an industrial forest. For more information, booklets are available at the office.

The Hodag Dome is the largest air-supported high school dome in the nation! It offers 128,000+ square feet of space to be used by our students, our student athletes, our community, and visitors to our area.

The Hodag Dome houses a full size turf football field, a soccer pitch, 2 regulation size softball or youth baseball fields, or 4 futsal fields. Additionally, the dome has 4 tennis courts that are also lined for pickleball, a six lane 100 m straight track, a community walking area, batting cages, golf simulators, and sports court flooring that can allow for basketball or volleyball.

Hodag Musky Challenge

A catch and release tournament held annually during September. The competition gives anglers the opportunity to compete for a $15,000 first place cash prize, and savor the thrill of landing one of the world’s feistiest fish! Try your luck this fall in the Rhinelander area!
