Optimize Your Bathroom WITH UNIVERSAL DESIGN
by Chad T. SpeightIs your bathroom aging well with you? It will if you incorporate Universal Design features: common-sense solutions for better living. Universal Design creates spaces that help family members age in place gracefully, accommodate guests of all ages, and are easier and safer to live in, allowing occupants to maintain maximum mobility and independence.
When considering the functional design of your home’s living spaces, it’s helpful to review the 7 Principles of Universal Design as articulated by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).
1. Equitable use—Design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities.
2. Flexibility in use—Design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities.
3. Simple and intuitive use—Use of design is easy to understand regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level.
4. Perceptible information—Design communicates necessary information effectively to the user regardless of ambient conditions or the user’s sensory abilities.
5. Tolerance for error—Design minimizes hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions.
6. Low physical effort—Design can be used efficiently and comfortably with minimum fatigue.
7. Size and space for approach and use—Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of the user’s body size, posture, or mobility.
To incorporate Universal Design principles in your bathroom, access should be as barrier free as possible. The best option is usually a zeroclearance threshold shower with a secure seat and niches for storage. Properly designed and installed, these shower enclosures can be integrated to turn the entire floor into a waterproofed area. While a main-level bathroom is desirable for long-term accessibility, an existing bathroom can be thoughtfully renovated to maximize access.
Toilets can have automatic flushing mechanisms and should be situated in the larger space area versus a separate enclosed space to allow someone to assist from one side, if needed. A chairheight, or comfort-height, toilet or bidet is an excellent option requiring less bending to use and is easier to get on and off. Faucets and valves with twist handles should be replaced with single-handle levers or single-handle shower control for better manipulation. They should also be positioned for easy reach and control. A handheld shower on a vertical bar provides excellent height control and flexibility in showering options.
Consider safety first. Grab bars are available in many styles and finishes for seamless integration into any bath design. It’s prudent to install blocking for grab bars when building or remodeling, even if you don’t plan on installing them just yet. Surfaces should be durable and easy to clean. Take care in selecting nonslip flooring (especially where surfaces can get wet) and ensure flooring material is installed properly to prevent trip hazards or mobility-device obstacles.
If possible, the floorplan should allow for a threshold-free, wide-access doorway into the space—36-inch minimum is optimal—and enough room to turnaround a mobility-assistance device. A pocket door or outward swing door can allow for better access if the door were to be accidentally blocked from the inside. Lever door handles and illuminated rocker light switches are easier to see and handle for all ages. Select a sink vanity with a readily accessible height and plan for essential item storage within easy reach. Floating vanities can be an ideal option to allow for positioning the sink at the best height and providing space to maneuver around and under. A removable storage shelf under the floating vanity is a flexible way to replace lost
cabinet storage. Ensure any closed storage areas have functional door and drawer handles for easier access to contents.
Technology helps boost access when combined with Universal Design principles. A humidity-sensing bath vent can be a smart addition since the fan can turn on and off automatically to stop moisture from accumulating and help prevent mold. Lighting should be designed for both general access and specific tasks. Think in terms of layering your lighting, utilizing good general lighting and bright task lighting for self-care, and easy to operate low-light options for dark interior spaces or latenight usage.
A NARI-certified Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP) goes through extensive training to properly interview clients, consider their unique needs, and integrate Universal Design seamlessly into remodeling projects. Your renovated space should be physically durable, functional, and accessible. It should be personalized for your current and long-term needs. Ensure that the company helping you update your home has a UDCP or similarly certified staff professional to
support your long-term investment. When you incorporate Universal Design into your living spaces, you ensure that everyone—regardless of age, size, or ability—can live safely, comfortably, and effectively in your home.
Chad Speight is the owner and president of Chads Design Build, in Madison, which has three NARI-certified UDCP team members on staff. Chads Design Build is the NARI of Madison 2022 Contractor of the Year (CotY) award winner for the Universal Design Bath category.

THEATER BUS
by Ruth HellenbrandA busload of retired Americans was touring Switzerland. On the third day, they visited a farm known for its excellent quality goat cheese. The young farmer’s wife gave them a tour, a cheesemaking demonstration, and some samples. As the retirees were tasting the cheeses, she pointed to a pasture full of goats. She said, “This is a special pasture where we let our older goats graze happily after they can no
longer give milk. In the United States, what do you do with your old goats?”
A woman piped up, “Well, they take us on bus tours.”
—an anonymous voicemail message
The written mission of Theater Bus is to provide safe, affordable, escorted outings to theatrical, cultural, and
social events. The unspoken mission is to reduce social isolation and loneliness in older adults. Theater Bus has been taking adults ages 55+ on day trips since 1976. Though we don’t tour goat farms or travel to foreign lands, we do go on day trips to fabulous plays, musicals, shows, boat tours, and more all year long. And unlike old goats, participants smile a lot, laugh, and enjoy life.
Social isolation and loneliness affect more than one-third of older adults and are common sources of distress, suffering, and impaired quality of life. Risk factors include lack of transportation, mobility impairment, untreated hearing loss, and limited opportunity to engage with others. Steps that can be taken to decrease isolation and loneliness include volunteering, community and church involvement, and taking a day trip with similar people.
Theater Bus provides safe transportation and convenient pickup points for day trips to see matinee theatre performances and concerts that include a stop for lunch, and trips are always escorted by caring volunteers. One price includes the coach bus, ticket to a show, lunch, tips, and the opportunity to connect with new people. One Theater Bus participant
shared, “Theater Bus provides me with an opportunity to go to theatre shows I wouldn’t normally have access to. It’s a great way to meet new people, and I feel very taken care of!”
Theater Bus also has fun and challenging volunteer opportunities in the office and on its committee service and board. Learn more about Theater Bus at theaterbus.org or by calling (608) 257-0003. You can also sign up for a quarterly newsletter to keep up to date on trips and new information. Great venues, buses, food, and people— that’s Theater Bus, Inc.
Ruth Hellenbrand is director of Theater Bus.

Benefits of TRAVEL
Whether sunning yourself on a beach or exploring museums and historical points of interest, travel is an excellent way for older adults to experience different cultures and create new memories in retirement. Travel also offers numerous mental and physical health benefits.
Boosts Mental Health: Traveling provides seniors a sense of adventure and excitement and can help alleviate
feelings of boredom, depression, and anxiety.
Keeps the Mind Active: Traveling exposes older adults to new experiences and environments and helps keep minds active and improves cognitive function.
Improves Physical Health: It’s important for seniors maintain an active lifestyle. Activities such as walking
tours, hiking, and other forms of physical activity provide seniors with easy and enjoyable ways to get exercise while exploring.
Strengthens Relationships: Whether traveling solo or with family and friends, going on trips opens doors for older adults to create new memories with loved ones and forge new friendships with peers who share similar interests.
Socialization becomes increasingly important as we age, and traveling with others is a wonderful way to combat loneliness and stay active and engaged.
Enhances Self-Esteem: Traveling can give seniors a sense of accomplishment and help to boost self-esteem. Exploring new places and trying new foods and activities can also increase confidence and independence.
Provides Learning Opportunities: Active minds help keep people young. Learning about new cultures and customs can broaden one’s understanding of the world and enhance appreciation for diversity.
Offers New Perspectives: Provides older adults with an opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone and gain new perspectives on life. Travel also doesn’t have to mean getting on an airplane. There are many local travel adventures that are mere car rides away. Senior centers, senior communities, and other businesses and organizations often offer organized travel opportunities.
In 2022, Capri Communities launched Enjoy Life on the Road, which invites residents, family, and friends to take guided road trips to select travel destinations in the United States. Meghan Davis, director of lifestyle enrichment for Capri Communities says, “We’re thrilled to offer Enjoy Life on the Road to our residents. The excitement of getting out to explore our country and make memories with friends new and old is contagious!”
Capri’s first group travel adventures will be in June 2023 to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, followed by Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park, and Black Hills of South Dakota in September 2023. Older adults interested in learning more can visit enjoylifeontheroad.com.
One thing is for sure, whether you’re traveling on your own, with a group, or as part of a senior living community, travel is good for the soul. So dust off that bucket list and start planning. No matter your age, there’s a world of adventure that awaits you!
Contributed by Capri Communities, a Wisconsin-based senior living company that realizes the value travel brings to older adults. Their tagline, enjoy life, is something they strive to deliver to residents every day.

RETIREMENT HOUSING & LONG-TERM CARE
A TALE OF FRIENDSHIP
by Kelly CheramyBob Dott and Sam Arneson are lifelong friends. But they didn’t know it until recently.
It was November 22, 1944. World War II was—in hindsight—winding down, but the notion of patriotic duty was still swelling. Two men, both 18 at the time, were strangers from Barneveld and Hollandale when they first boarded a bus in Dodgeville headed for Milwaukee. The two had
the same purpose: to undergo a military medical exam. Both passed and enlisted in the United States Army. A deferment allowed Sam to finish the semester at University of Wisconsin‒Madison, so he was headed back home. Without a chance to say goodbye, Sam left Bob a note of good luck.
That day, on what Bob calls “the magic numbers of 11-22-44,” would always
remain an important touchstone. It was their enlistment date and the precursor to a unique lifelong, albeit mostly absentee, friendship that they never saw coming. Bob was sent to Germany, and Sam served in Japan. Both were infantrymen. Bob escaped a death sentence associated with the Battle of the Bulge in Europe, and Sam was stationed to be a part of combat that never materialized thanks to Japan’s surrender.
After the war ended in 1945, the two finished out their service without knowing the fate of the other. Both returned to Madison to finish school, and each started his own business: Bob as an accountant in Beaver Dam, and Sam as an insurance agent in Barneveld and Madison.
Fast forward to 2022. Bob, who had been living in the Attic Angel Community for 18 years, was having lunch in Attic Angel’s Arbor Café when the nametag of a touring visitor caught his eye. Immediately, he recognized the name and asked, “Are you from Barneveld?” Sam replied in the affirmative.
“I know you!” said Bob, prying open his memory. And, even better, Bob unearthed the very note that Sam had left for him more than 77 years earlier. The two are now as close friends as can be.
“It was just incredible,” Sam recalls. “I don’t even remember writing the note.”
The scene couldn’t have played out any better if it had been written. Our past lives aren’t vestiges of our presents, but
potential building blocks of opportunity to reconnect with something truly special that brought us to where we are today. We can’t anticipate when or where the chance will come to rekindle a memory, a moment, or a friendship, but when it comes around, we sure are quick to recognize it. We all should be so fortunate to have something meaningful from our past come back to enhance our lives going forward.

Adopting a COMPANION ANIMAL
by Lisa BernardDane County Humane Society (DCHS) operates under the belief that anyone who wants to love and care for a pet should be able to do so. Unfortunately, the cost to bring a furry friend home may seem out of reach for some.
DCHS leaders realized the challenges some seniors face being able to afford bringing home a pet companion and sought out a program that could help meet this need. In the summer of
2021, DCHS partnered with Pets for the Elderly (PFE) to help reduce the cost of adopting a companion animal for seniors in our community.
In 1992, PFE began working with two shelters in Ohio to carry out its mission of providing pet companions to seniors while helping shelter animals find new homes. After seeing years of success, PFE branched out nationally in 2002. Currently, PFE works with 56 shelters in 32 states.
Through the PFE grant, adopters age 60+ can get up to $50 off their new pet’s adoption fee. At DCHS, adoption fees cover spay/neuter surgery and age-appropriate vaccinations for dogs, cats, and rabbits. The fees also cover flea and tick treatment and microchip implantation in dogs and cats, heartworm tests for adult dogs, and any additional veterinary treatment for animals at the shelter.
In the first six months of the program at DCHS, 41 dogs, 57 cats, and 2 guinea pigs were adopted. Among the animals adopted was Kona. Virgean Ostrand had been searching for a year and a half for a dachshund when she spotted one on DCHS’ website one Sunday evening in June 2021. She and her husband, Dale, left their Door County home the next morning to make the more-than-twohour drive to DCHS to meet Kona.
Virgean had heard about the PFE program, but when she and her husband decided to meet Kona, they didn’t know DCHS was a program partner. “I think it’s a great option,” Virgean says of the ability to adopt and receive a senior discount. “I’m hoping that more people can take advantage of the program. It really helped.”
PFE and DCHS believe all seniors, including those living on fixed incomes, should be able to enjoy the comfort, companionship, and love of a pet. The discount afforded through PFE helps to make it possible for seniors to provide shelter animals with loving homes. Research also shows a number of health benefits to having pets, including increased fitness, less stress, decreased blood pressure, and decreased feelings of loneliness.
Upon bringing Kona home, the Ostrands noticed a very easy transition. “He was the best trained family-friendly dog you ever met,” says Virgean, who hasn’t been without a dog for 43 years. “Of course, he attached himself to my husband...little bugger. He’s just the perfect little doggie. I hope the senior discount program can continue. Kona has made such a difference in our lives. He made our lives bearable when I lost Oscar, my little long-hair doxie.”
Through the program, DCHS adopted 46 dogs and 49 cats into new homes in 2022. For 2023, DCHS not only received funds to continue to offer
reduced adoption fees for seniors, but the shelter also received another grant from PFE to offer veterinary care for pets of seniors who qualify.
In 2020, PFE expanded its program to offer funding to partner shelters to cover services, such as veterinary, retention, surgical, and food support, to pet adopters age 60+. DCHS will use the funds to provide pets of seniors with dentals, diagnostics, medications, surgeries, and more by the shelter’s inhouse veterinarians.
Now, not only does DCHS help seniors find a furry friend to love, but can also provide veterinary care to keep the animal with the family who loves them.
For seniors who would like the companionship of a pet but feel they cannot commit to a long-term timeframe, they could apply to foster an animal in need of temporary care outside the shelter. Some animals just need a break from the shelter while they wait to find their new families, while others need extra socialization or time to grow or to heal from an injury. To learn more about fostering, visit giveshelter.org/foster.
