Tampa Florida’s Beloved Storyteller and Community Icon
Gayle Guyardo Written by Amy Breuer
This transition wasn’t without its challenges, but Gayle’s passion for storytelling, commitment to her community, and unwavering determination have allowed her to adapt, thrive, and continue to make a positive impact. Gayle’s warm and welcoming presence on the screen has made her a household name, and her dedicated reporting has earned the respect of her peers and viewers alike. However, in 2020, due to vocal cord issues that were affecting her ability to meet the demands of her role as a news anchor, she faced a difficult decision. In a heartfelt farewell to her news anchoring career, Gayle decided to retire from the position she had held for years. But as one chapter closed, another one opened, and it would prove to be a transformative and fulfilling experience for Gayle.
G
ayle Guyardo, a beloved figure in the Tampa Bay community, has been an integral part of the region for over 35 years. Born and raised in Tampa, Florida, Gayle’s career has taken her on an extraordinary journey from being a well respected news anchor to becoming the host of the nationally syndicated health and wellness show, Bloom, on WFLA News Channel 8.

WINTER 2023
Gayle’s transition to a new role as the host of Bloom on WFLA News Channel 8 marked a significant shift in her career. This platform allowed Gayle to continue sharing stories and connect with her audience on an even broader scale, providing viewers with the latest information on a wide range of topics, including medicine, nutrition, fitness, beauty, wellness, sports medicine, holistic healing, relationships, and many forms of health (women’s, children’s, mental, financial, and even pet health!).
Throughout her long and distinguished career, Gayle has witnessed how the media landscape has significantly evolved in time. Gayle shares, “It’s no surprise that the way people consume news and information has shifted dramatically due to technological advancements. Adapting to these changes and being able to capture the audience’s attention in the midst of the noise have been essential challenges.” Gayle, with her remarkable ability to adapt with the times, has navigated these changes gracefully. She understands that to make an impact in today’s world, it’s not just about reporting the news but also about telling compelling stories that resonate with the audience. For Gayle, this quest for balance starts with selfcare. She places great importance on paying attention to what she eats, maintaining a fitness routine, and following good rituals for skincare. These practices not only keep her physically and mentally fit but also enable her to bring her best self to her work and family. Gayle’s upbringing plays a significant role in shaping her values and work ethic. Her father, a
dairy farmer, instilled in her the importance of a strong work ethic. He, along with her uncle and grandfather, worked tirelessly to build a dairy farm from the ground up, a testament to the value of dedication and persistence. Her mother was a teacher and had a profound impact on Gayle’s perspective on storytelling. Her

She has dedicated her life and work to giving back to the community and supporting others, connecting people, places, and ideas from Tampa Bay and around the world. Her selfless nature has had such an incredibly positive impact on my life and has surely touched the lives of so many.”

mother’s teachings went beyond the classroom, emphasizing the importance of going beyond the screen and truly connecting with people. Gayle, often emotional when speaking of her mother, acknowledges the invaluable lessons she learned about the power of stories. Her genuine passion for storytelling shines through, even in the most trying circumstances. Armed with her phone during the pandemic, she ventured into the community to record the stories of everyday people. Gayle’s deep love for her work, community and the appreciation for the military is accompanied by a strong sense of duty to give back. She practices gratitude and is appreciative of the opportunities that have come her way throughout her career. Her experiences have not only enriched her life but also allowed her to impact others positively. Gayle’s faith and strength are evident in every aspect of her life, and, during Gayle’s interview, nothing lit Gayle’s face up more than talking about the people who matter the most to her, her family. According to Gayle, her husband Mark and their four amazing daughters are her rock and a source 10

of unwavering support. As the holiday season approaches, she is looking forward to the magic of the season and spending time with her family. As Gayle continues her journey, she embraces the blank pages ahead, using them to script her story and make a meaningful impact on her community and beyond. Driven by her passion for storytelling and her dedication to making a difference, she remains committed to producing media in new and exciting ways. Gayle’s career is a testament to the power of following one’s passion, adapting to change, and giving back to the community. Her story serves as an inspiration for those seeking to make a positive impact on the world, while also cherishing the importance of family, values, and gratitude. Small Town,

here’s more to West Virginia than meets the eye.
Contrary to what first comes to mind for most, West Virginia’s ‘wild and wonderful’ enchantment is as much about its rich history and quirky individuality as it is its infamous Appalachian folklore — case and point: West Virginia’s oldest chartered town, Shepherdstown. Shepherdstown has all the trappings of a quaint rural town with the refreshing uniqueness of a big city borough. Its idyllic location in the Eastern Panhandle along the Potomac River, deeply rooted position in American history, and proximity to Washington DC and other Eastern US hotspots make Shepherdstown one of the most popular countryside detours for visitors from far and wide. Shepherdstown is a special place. But what makes it exceptional — for this particular outsider, anyway — is not the monuments and memorials or the short train ride to our nation’s capital. What makes Shepherdstown exceptional is the entrepreneurial eccentricity that emanates from the businesses there. And, interestingly, most just happen to be women-owned. Three of Shepherdstown’s best examples of this are Samantha Savoca of Meditative Medicinals, Marissa Morris of ReVersaRose, and Ashley Davis of Tonic. Meditative Medicinals Samantha Savoca was living in Colorado when she discovered the healing power of hemp. Her passion 12

for creating hemp-derived CBD products to treat depression, anxiety, autoimmune diseases, sleep disorders, chronic pain, and more eventually led her to launch Meditative Medicinals in 2017. In 2018, Samantha seized an opportunity to grow hemp in West Virginia and moved to Shepherdstown, where, at the time, she was only one of about 30 people growing hemp. Shepherdstown welcomed Samantha, providing encouragement and support when she finally opened a brick-and-mortar shop for her handmade CBD products in 2019. That’s because what Samantha does in Shepherdstown goes far beyond selling medical hemp; she educates her neighbors and helps them find holistic solutions to their health problems. “I’m a huge advocate for cannabis education,” Samantha said. “When someone comes to my shop, I always offer a consultation, and it’s completely free, and my goal is to work with them to find out how I can best help them and find the correct dosage and regimen for them. That’s what fuels me.” Samantha’s dedication, knowledge, and guidance have made Meditative Medicinals a go-to for locals and visitors and strengthen Shepherdstown’s legacy of attraction. ReVersaRose Marissa Morris had no idea what was in store for her future when she purchased her first bottle of rosehip oil. Disheartened by the lengthy list of ingredients, she saw an opportunity to make her own with all organic, clean, vegan, and cruelty-free ingredients. Marissa founded ReVersaRose in 2019 and took her talents to
Shepherdstown, pitching her product to local businesses. As luck would have it, Samantha at Meditative Medicinals agreed to carry Marissa’s rosehip oil with a CBD infusion, which blossomed into more products and, eventually, in 2020, a storefront right across the street. “One day, Sam walked me across the street and was like, ‘Hey, this little space is up for rent,’ and I looked at her like she was crazy,” Marissa shared. But with Samantha’s encouragement, Marissa took a leap of faith and became part of the fabric of Shepherdstown. When another opportunity for growth presented itself, Marissa dove in again, becoming a licensed esthetician in 2022 and expanding ReVersaRose to a second location, where she offers facial and brow services using her own handmade products. Marissa’s story exudes the spirit of Shepherdstown — forging a path, finding community, and fulfilling dreams.

Tonic Herbalist Ashley Davis had been running a small business selling handcrafted teas until serendipity struck. At a holiday craft market in Shepherdstown, Carmela Cesare, another herbalist, introduced herself to Ashley, and they connected over a shared vision of an herbal apothecary in Shepherdstown. A little over a year later, Ashley and Carmela opened Tonic; that was seven years ago. From its onset, Tonic has served the community of Shepherdstown as a place where folks can explore botanical medicine through housemade elixirs, bulk herbs, wellness services, and workshops. Tonic also offers an online shop for their house-made products and custom blending for herbalists looking for a place to have their formulas filled. “We call ourselves a therapeutic herb shop,” Ashley explained. “We named ourselves Tonic because we really believe in the ‘tonic’ herbs and the nutritive value of herbs. It really applies a focus on daily nourishment.” Tonic’s goal is to assist its customers in becoming proactively empowered in their wellness journey, and education is essential to that. So, in addition to the workshops Tonic offers, Ashley founded the Sacred Garden School of Herbalism in 2019. The learning and the community-minded culture built through Tonic and Sacred Garden within the local clientele (which includes Samantha and Marissa), staff, and students have been the most rewarding for Ashley. On paper, Shepherdstown may seem like a run-ofthe-mill historical town. In actuality, there’s nothing ordinary about it. While it certainly is historic, not to mention beautiful, the women of Shepherdstown have established it as a place where you turn your dreams into MERRY AND BRIGHT

here are certain people in the world who radiate positive energy. They’re the people who make you feel special, the people who light up a room when they walk in and when they speak (or, even better, sing). Those people carry immense power and can positively affect lives by uplifting others and spreading goodness. One of those people is the acclaimed and iconic gospel artist CeCe Winans. I have been a fan of CeCe since I was a young girl. I remember hearing her voice for the first time while she was performing on television with her gospel-singing family. I had never heard something so moving and beautiful. I still haven’t. When people say, “That’s a gift from God,” I believe they are talking about CeCe. For over 40 years, her music and her ministry have brought hope, joy, and goodness to all.
Holding the title of being the best-selling and most-awarded female gospel artist of all time, having sold 17 million records worldwide, with 15 Grammy Awards, 31 Grammy Nominations, 29 Dove Awards, and 15 Stellar Awards, CeCe Winans is one of the most accomplished and celebrated women in music history. While she is, indeed, a Gospel artist, CeCe Winan’s music is not just for people of faith. She considers herself a believer who happens to sing. Her songs touch the hearts of everyone, from the Pope and US Presidents to people in small church pews, and her angelic voice captivates all who hear it. Duets like “Great is Thy Faithfulness” with Carrie Underwood and her cross-over duet “Count On Me” with Whitney Houston are unbelievably beautiful and can make folks of all ages fall to their knees and weep. Her mega-hit, “The Goodness of

For as long as CeCe has been giving us good news, it’s still always something special when it resonates with so many. “When you see what is happening with the goodness of God, you know that you’ve hit a chord that shows that we’re more alike than we are different. It’s been a beautiful thing to see around the world. it to be life-changing, and it has been such an incredible experience of God’s presence showing up. It’s meant a lot to me because people didn’t come to see me; they really came to see Him. They came not as spectators, but they came to participate. They came to sing,” she told us. CeCe shared that one of her favorite takeaways from the tour was seeing the kids in the audience. “I get excited when I look out and see young children because, with gospel music, the whole family can come. It’s a safe place. When you see kids singing and dancing to your music, you realize that you’re affecting generations. If I can make a positive impact on their lives, that’s what it’s all about.”
The Gospel legend just wrapped up her wildly successful “Believe for It” tour. After all of her accomplishments, CeCe says that this particular tour has been especially memorable. “This tour has been so meaningful to me. My desire was for

centered and compassionate guide on inspiring, strengthening, and giving hope to our future generations. CeCe shares that faith is the greatest thing we can leave our children. “I feel so strongly about that because that’s my testimony,” she said. “As a 59-year-old woman, I look over my life. I look at all the ups and downs. I look at the disappointments. I look at the joys of life. And it’s the only thing that has kept me stable; the only thing that has kept me standing is my faith. As I realized that in my life and raising my kids, that was my prayer. ‘Lord, just let them fall in love with you. Let me somehow live my life in a way and teach them so that they’ll have strong faith in you. I know that if they have that, they’ll have the foundation that they need to be able to stand through life’s disappointments because it’s going to happen. It’s not if it’s going to happen; it’s when, and for them to be able to stand and weather the storm, they’ve got to have a strong faith.’ This is what I wanted to put in the book. I wanted to awaken those of us who are part of the older generation. I’m here because of the mothers in the church. I’m here because they corrected me. They loved me enough to tell me the truth and not just what I wanted to hear. Everything about me is here because of them, and I realized it’s my turn. Our kids need us to walk this thing out so that they can have faith. That is the greatest gift. That’s the greatest inheritance you could leave.” In her book, CeCe dives into her personal experiences, writing about some of the loved ones she has lost, from family to one of her dearest friends, Whitney Houston. “One thing we all have in common is that we all go through trying times. We all experience hurt and pain and suffering. That’s why we need one another,” CeCe asserted. “I wanted to be vulnerable enough to let people know that when the storm comes (and it’s going to come), we can make it through. It’s day by day, and it’s a fight. You gotta pray. You gotta have people that can speak into your life. You gotta have counselors and people
equipped to minister to you through that hurt and pain because pain is real. Grief is real, and the difference between it taking you out and you making it through is being equipped.” One of CeCe’s most poignant messages is knowing you’re not alone. “One of the voices that so many people hear is, ‘You’re the only one, and there’s no way out.’ No. Don’t give up,” she advised. “I pray my book and my ministry shout out, “You’re not alone. God is with you, and you can make it.” CeCe applies her own real-world wisdom in helping individuals find hope. She and her husband, Alvin Love II, are founding co-pastors of the non-denominational Nashville Life Church. “Our church is about 12 years old, and, for me, it definitely keeps you on your knees. Because you can’t carry it as a natural person. You have to know how to pray for it and be tenderhearted towards people when you understand the battles they’re going through. Somebody asked me the other day, ‘What’s the difference in what [you] did before becoming a pastor?’ Singing and hearing testimonies is one thing, but when you begin to pastor, you walk through life with people. It’s no longer getting off the stage saying, ‘See y’all later. God bless you.’ It’s really going through life with people. People really are amazing. The things that life can bring your way are amazing, and to see how people have stood through the test of time and through the pain of life is really humbling.” In addition to pastoring her church, CeCe continues to forge the road of goodness through her writing, music, and her YouTube show “Generations,” a roundtable discussion for women exploring the struggles and joys of life. And CeCe’s constructed her own powerhouse team of co-hosts: her daughter Ashley Phillips and mother Delores Winans. “The show is about acknowledging the importance of not just spiritual wellness but wellness as a whole. We have to take time to check on ourselves, MERRY AND BRIGHT
21
SAM AND JENN FRAWLEY| PHOTO CREDIT especially as women, to make ourselves a priority. Because we’re nurturers and we’re always thinking about somebody else. We’re always getting the kids here and there, and we don’t realize that we have to carve out time. If not, then our kids won’t have us. They won’t have the full of it. They won’t have the best of us.” “Generations” has been such a success that it quickly expanded into a live women’s conference space and is now getting ready to celebrate its third year on May 10-11, 2024. “It’s been amazing,” CeCe said. “Each year, we’ve had a guest to interview, and last year, Oprah did it for us. I think we had at one of the conferences five generations represented. Every generation needs the other.” As the holidays quickly approach, those generational bonds become even more important. As her tour wraps for the year and 22

CeCe winds down her schedule, she’s grateful to be able to celebrate the holidays at home. “The holidays are all about family, food, and reflection. It’s about thanks-giving [giving thanks] and the goodness of God. I like to chill out during the holidays,” she shared. “I don’t plan a lot. If there’s a great Christmas movie out, we might go do that, but I mostly just reflect, and I’m just really grateful that I have my family.” In discussing what ‘winding down’ typically looks like for CeCe, we quickly landed on the importance of self-care. And, of course, we couldn’t skip over the conversation around the beauty standards that easily affect us all. “We have to learn to impact culture, not let culture impact us,” CeCe said. “We live in a culture where you reach a certain age, and it’s like, you have no more value. No, no, no. It’s the total opposite. The older you are, the more value you have. My mom is now 87. I am at her feet, still
getting wisdom. Why? Because she’s been here before. She’s gone through this before. There’s nothing that I can bring to her that she has not been through and experienced. She is a well of wisdom, and I want people to understand it’s time for us to honor our elders. We cannot go with culture. The Bible says, ‘Honor your father and mother so your days will be long.’ We need them,” she testified. CeCe shared that she is enjoying her last year in her 50s and is working to become more disciplined. “I try to get enough rest, meditation, and prayer. That’s where my peace comes from. I do work out. When I’m on tour, it’s every day so I can have my lungs, sing, and have my breath. It’s no longer a choice. I have to do it and enjoy it, but I’m one of those that I can fall off the wagon and get back on, so discipline is key.”
you’re not trying to be somebody else. You’re always trying to be better. We always want to strive to be our best selves and be satisfied with who we are. That’s beautiful. When you know who you are, you embrace it, and you’re satisfied. And all God’s people said, “Amen!” Keep up to date on all things CeCe, and look out for new music in 2024 by visiting her website: https://cecewinans.com
I also asked CeCe if she has any favorite beauty products and to share a beauty tip that has been passed down from a loved one. “I do love La Mer. It’s very expensive, but I can feel the difference when I use it. I also love this African soap, which gets all the makeup off really well. My niece told me about that. I don’t like wearing makeup when I’m not performing, so I like to just have a clean and moisturized face. As for a tip, I look at my mom, and you can’t really find a wrinkle on her face. Her regiment to this day is washing her face with soap and putting Vaseline on it.” As I concluded my interview, I asked the final question that we ask all our Ask Us Beauty cover stars: How do you define beauty? Cece looked at me with her radiant smile and infectious, warm energy and, with the goodness of God, said this: There’s a scripture in the Bible that says we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Beauty is happiness. It’s knowing that you’re beautiful to the one who matters most. BELIEVEABLE HOPE By Ali Landry
@reshapewithalilandry
N
othing beats the feeling of joy that brings hope to my spirit during the holidays. One of the most important ‘reshapes’ I have made over the last decade is being purposeful with my time and doing my best to be intentional, so I can live a life that I love. There’s no better time than the holidays to really feel every moment and visualize what’s to come for the new year.
•
Years ago, I came across a book titled Believable Hope. Hope is a feeling of exception and desire for a certain thing to happen, and this book shares the concept that when you hope to reshape an area of your life that is no longer serving you, you must first start with the belief that you can. Whenever I realize that I need a reshape (however big or small), I evaluate my heart, mind, soul, and health. They are all connected, and I need to engage each area if I’m going to make any real steps toward accomplishing my goals. Living a joy-filled life and keeping a spirit of hope in your soul takes effort and balance.
•
Here are six areas of focus in my life that help keep me moving forward with hope and purpose: • Home Environment: Especially during the hustle and bustle of the holidays, I try to create a home environment that brings me joy and tranquility. Clear out the clutter and arrange spaces that make you feel at peace. • Gratitude: This is a daily practice for me as I journal in the morning or evening.
•
•
Monthly Scheduling: As a wife and mom of three, I keep an ongoing monthly calendar and always plug in “me time.” I have learned that if I don’t take care of me, everything and everyone else is impacted. Visualization: This is also part of my journaling, and I love to use Pinterest. I visualize whatever I am thinking about for any area of my life and collect tools and materials that will help me reach that goal. Overall Health: Years ago, I was experiencing brain fog, mild depression, low sex drive, and poor digestion. I just felt off. Part of my reshape journey was to figure it out. Now that I have, I stick to my proper food choices, personalized supplements, fitness schedule, mental health refresh, and much more. It’s all in my book Reshape Your Life. Routines: Routines are everything. They help you maximize your day, make progress with your life, and open your schedule for freedom. I have a morning and night routine that I live by, with mini routines throughout different days of the week. This has been a total game changer and allows me to create a life that aligns with my passions and priorities.
Give yourself a beautiful gift, and let the true meaning of hope resonate in your heart this holiday season. With believable hope, it’s never too late to reshape your life.

Traditions Have the Power to Transform Childcare Programs into a
Place of Wonder By Kim Howey
T
here is excitement in the air as we approach the holidays. Children are eagerly learning the most wonderful traditions as they start decorating and party planning for the best season of the year. These time-honored traditions are such an important part of early childhood development. They give children an expectation of what is to come, filling them with anticipation and joy for the whole experience.
38
Traditions also offer children something they can count on year after year, providing them with stability and modeling dedication. More importantly, traditions establish a foundation of trust. And in the world of child growth and development, trust is KING! With a healthy foundation of trust, love will flourish. This is true for family structures and caregivers outside of the family, such as childcare facilities.
have now reached into the lives of our children’s spouses and our grandchild.
Creating a unique family culture is by far one of the best aspects of being a parent. In the middle of all the serious decisions, never-ending chores, and sleepless nights, I was grateful for the ability to create a family culture that uniquely speaks to who I am as a caregiver. I am the mother of five amazing children, and I have thoroughly enjoyed establishing family traditions with my husband, Mark. We decided early on that we wanted to create traditions that combined our childhood experiences with new ideas that reflect our shared destiny as a family. Together, we created and maintained dozens of family traditions that
One of our favorite Howey traditions is eggnog French toast on Christmas morning, made with Texas Toast dipped in 1-part egg and 2-part eggnog batter topped with a sea of Mrs. Butterworth syrup and huge strips of bacon. Opening presents can wait — bring on the French toast and bacon! Another less yummy tradition is that Mark and I do not open our presents until all the children are done opening theirs. In our house, this can take a while. We serve their needs first and enjoy taking in the magic of the moment. Truth be told, Mark waits until I’m done, too. It’s a small matter, but it’s endearing that

parents we serve. I love it when a child asks, “Are we baking pumpkin rolls for Thanksgiving camp this year?” Every fall for the past ten years, I have offered a crochet class to teach children how to crochet pumpkins and animals. One of my students dedicated four years to reach the skill level of crocheting a hat for her mother as a Christmas gift. She said the dedication was worth the look on her mom’s face when she wore the hat for the first time.
Dad puts his needs after the needs of the family. My own children benefited from a family culture built on the strong foundation of traditions, and I have seen first-hand how they can create an environment of safety and wonder. That is why I wanted to make sure that my attention to traditions has extended to my professional life and students as well. I have been working with school-age children for more than sixteen years. Currently, I am an after-school director for a Department of Children and Family Services licensed facility. I have always cultivated a childcare program culture that includes traditions throughout the year. These traditions have become a critical part of maintaining healthy relationships with the children and
Kiddos in childcare facilities or those attending after-school programs, traditions become the earliest memories of sharing experiences with people you trust like your own family. A child who is given the opportunity to experience familiar traditions outside of their home environment will grow in their trust for childcare workers and future mentors. It is my hope that we can generate the sense of joy and wonder that only traditions can provide, be it in our own families or others.

THE ART OF BALANCING
the Holidays I
t’s interesting; the more people I talk to, the more I hear how frustrating the holidays can be. What I’ve found is that the expectation of the holidays can weigh heavily on most of us. And then, of course, there’s the guilt of not including someone on your “gift list” or the realization that you forgot someone, sending you out scrambling for lastminute buys. In today’s difficult economy, it’s time to allow yourself the freedom not to feel guilty. Most people are probably feeling the same way you are. So, come up with something that works for you and your budget. After all, the holidays should really be about the kids or the special people in your life, and the magic of this love-filled season. With family, you could communicate that you are focusing only on gifts for your kids this year. At work, you could try implementing a no-gift potluck, emphasizing the joy of cooking or ordering your favorite dish. Make it a big to-do, give it a fun name, and do it annually. For the hard-to-buy-for friend in your life — or, let’s be honest, the judgy friend you feel pressured to buy for — opt for experiences instead. Take them out for

dinner or drinks, and write them a special card. And if you still feel judged, it may be time to reconsider the health of that friendship. Making gifts for loved ones is also a great alternative to buying. If you’re crafty, or even if you’re not, there are lots of ways to create something memorable for the special people on your list. I love to reuse glasses and jars to create bouquets; I even like to use faux plants that will last forever. Planning ahead is another way to alleviate some of the holiday stress, although I know that this is often easier said than done. Enjoying the holidays should be about just that: enjoying the holidays. Setting boundaries around what works for you and your family will help you to feel the joy and peace of the season rather than the stress. It’s never easy to find balance during the holidays, but try to take a deep breath and know it will all be okay. Do what matters most, exchange gifts with the most important people on your list, and allow yourself to feel the joy and warmth this season should bring. Happy Holidays, my friends.

Healthy Food Swaps Written by: Amber Shaw | @msambershaw

T
he holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and, of course, indulging in delicious food. But for so many women (and men), the holidays can bring worry about packing on the pounds and having to start over with your health goals come January 1. I am an advocate for moderation and never depriving yourself of any foods, but that can feel impossible during the holidays with all of the extra festivities. This is exactly why it can be helpful to also sprinkle in a few mouthwatering and nutritious alternatives to your favorite holiday foods. With these healthy swaps, you can enjoy the festivities without compromising your well-being (and your pant size). Here are some delicious swaps to try without feeling deprived: 1. Roasted Sweet Potatoes instead of Mashed Potatoes: Swap out the traditional mashed potatoes, loaded with butter and cream, for roasted sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are packed with vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. Toss them in olive oil, sprinkle with herbs and spices, and roast until tender. They are extremely flavorful and will leave you feeling satisfied. 2. Quinoa Stuffing instead of Traditional Stuffing: Traditional stuffing is often made with white bread and butter, which can be heavy on calories and lacking in nutrients. Opt for a healthier alternative by using quinoa as the base for your stuffing. Quinoa is a protein-rich grain that adds a nutty flavor and a satisfying texture. Mix it with vegetables, herbs, and broth for a delicious and wholesome stuffing option. 3. Baked Apples instead of Apple Pie: Apple pie is a classic holiday dessert, but it’s typically loaded with sugar. Instead, try baked apples for a healthier yet equally satisfying treat. 44
WINTER 2023
Core the apples, fill them with a mixture of oats, cinnamon, and a touch of honey, and bake until tender. This is one of my faves! 4. Grilled Turkey instead of Fried Turkey: Fried turkey may be delicious, but it’s also high in unhealthy fats. Opt for a healthier cooking method by grilling your turkey instead. I actually love smoking ours on the Big Green Egg. It not only reduces the fat content but also adds a smoky flavor that will enhance the taste of your holiday feast. I love to marinate the turkey with herbs and spices for added flavor and moisture. 5. Vegetable Crudité instead of Chips and Dip: Instead of serving a bowl of greasy chips and high-calorie dip, create a colorful and nutritious vegetable crudité platter. Slice up an array of fresh vegetables, like carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers, and cherry tomatoes. I also love to add sweet peppers. Pair them with a light and flavorful dip, such as hummus or a Greek yogurt-based dip. This alternative will provide essential vitamins and minerals while satisfying your craving for a crunchy snack. This holiday season, don’t let the overwhelmingness of the holiday goodies derail your commitment to a healthy lifestyle. By making simple swaps and incorporating nutritious alternatives, you can enjoy the festivities stress-free. From roasted sweet potatoes to grilled turkey and vegetable crudité, these healthy alternatives will nourish your body and leave you feeling satisfied. So, go ahead and savor the flavors of the season while staying true to your well-being. Happy and healthy holidays!

The Holiday GLOW Elena George Celebrity Makeup Artist
@elenageorge1mkp
If you are looking for that holiday glow this season, I have five amazing products that will make everyone say, “Ooh, she is glowing!” I used these products on both Amber (Laign) and Robin (Roberts) for their nuptials, and they both looked radiant.
1
DRYP Tease Dry Oil Body Spray by Rinna Beauty:
First up is a product that will give your skin a glow like no other. The silky and lightweight body oil combines jojoba, sunflower seed, carrot seed, sea buckthorn, argan oil, and rosemary leaf extract. It comes in two applications, translucent and golden shimmer, both of which illuminate your skin. It’s 46

a great moisturizer, and it smells amazing, too. You can wear it all over your body and glow from head to toe!
2 Charged Up Liquid Eyeshadow - Sephora Collection: Want your eyes to pop and shimmer? Sephora has a
collection of creamy liquid eyeshadows that provide long-lasting coverage. This lightweight formula won’t crease when it’s applied, and it doesn’t move or fade. Plus, it’s waterproof. For the brides, I used Color 11 Connect in Chocolate Brown and Color 08 Ready in Toffee.
3
Nars Laguna Bronzing Powder:
5
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer: This go-to product provides a nottoo-sticky gloss with just a tint of color. It’s the perfect way to complete your OH-SO-Glow. I used Color Champ StampShimmering Holographic Gold Pearl to generate a wedding look.
This smooth and lasting powder was the perfect complement to Amber and Robin’s look. It’s not too overpowering and provides an instant warmth for any skin tone.
4
Fashion Fair Iconic Lipstick:
If you’re ready to turn heads with head-turning colors, make your lips stand out with Fashion Fair Iconic Lipstick. This vegan product provides buildable coverage and never looks dull or chalky. I used Color Lace-Dusty Rose for Amber and Robin’s big day, but there are 14 beautiful colors to choose from.

DearBeautyQ&A Pose Tips
Q: Lots of my friends look great in pics. Why do I look so frumpy? I need some pointers! A: It’s all in the pose! Here are three easy tips: 1. Try turning your body to a 45 degree angle. You will appear less boxy and show off your curves. 2. Create triangles with your arms/elbows. Putting your hand on your hip puts space between your arm and body, which will help define your shape. 3. Cross your legs at your ankles, pop a leg, or put one leg slightly in front of the other to help add shape to your body. And, of course, smile! Rachel Pienias, Co-Founder of Roots Marketing and Onyx Unity Model, @ rachelpienias
Hair Loss
Q: I used to have beautiful hair, but every year it seems to get thinner and thinner. Can you help? A: Thinning hair is a problem for many women as they mature. Consider some of the following tips to help combat the natural thinning process: 1. Avoid hair styles that are tight or pull on the scalp. 2. If you color your hair, go to a professional who only uses quality products. 3. Use protectant before applying any type of heat to your hair, and use heat sparingly (less than twice a week) 4. Eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of protein. 5. Avoid unnecessary stress. 6. Take supplements, such as collagen powder or biotin. If you are still noticing an abnormally high amount of hair loss, see a medical professional to have a full blood panel done. This would include an 48

IV
Q: I love going out, but I don’t seem to bounce back like I did in my twenties. Some of my friends have suggested getting an IV. Is this a good idea? A: Absolutely! An intravenous (IV) treatment is a way to deliver hydration directly into your bloodstream without relying on an already fragile digestive system. An IV before or after going out is a great way to help prevent and treat a hangover by rehydrating the body and replenishing vitamins lost while drinking or through extreme sun exposure, which, in turn, helps your mind and body become activated again. IV fluids can be customized with electrolytes and vitamins to restore energy and reduce soreness. So, cheers to your next guiltless night out! Melissa Mare, APRN @Healthwellnesswestchase
Weights
Q: Now that I am nearing 50, I try to do cardio a few days a week to avoid weight gain, but do I really need to lift weights? A: Only if you want to improve the quality of your life! Studies show that 30-60 minutes of resistance training per week reduces your risk of premature aging, heart disease, and cancer by 10-20%. It also helps increase muscle mass, which can boost (continued on page 50)

Cataracts
Q: I have blue eyes. Is it a myth that I am in greater danger of getting cataracts? How should I be protecting my eyes? A: That is a myth! Everyone’s lens of the eye ages with time and will eventually become a cataract. The lens is encapsulated; therefore, the lens fibers cannot slough off like skin and thus become more and more opaque and physically harden as they age, making the lens itself less flexible and harder to see through. This is a normal part of our aging process. Certain instances can accelerate the process, for example, increased sun exposure, smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, and steroid use. Changes in your vision should always be evaluated by your optometrist as it could be something serious or just part of normal living. And always wear your sunglasses! Dr. Kate Claffie @ cmecgr8
Insurance
Q: I am entering my 40s. Is it too late to get life insurance? A: It’s not too late! The best time to buy life insurance was yesterday, but the next best time is today. Life insurance is a great protector of your income and provides security for your family. Also, some benefits of new life insurance products are living benefits, which provide long-term care coverage, retirement supplementation, and taxfree access to your cash. You owe it to your family to seek a professional to review your options. President of FinFit Life William Pienias @ Williampienias

Stem Cells
Q: What is all the hype over stem cells? What do they do? A: Stem cells hold various promising applications, including wound healing, skin regeneration/ rejuvenation, and treating certain skin disorders. Stem cells used for rejuvenation are typically adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) sourced from bone marrow and fat. They are used to enhance collagen production, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Embryonic stem cells are derived from embryos and can differentiate into any cell type in the human body. They are highly potent but have raised ethical concerns. Exosomes, a human placental formulation containing growth factors, RNA, and proteins, are often implemented for rejuvenation. My suggestion is to always consult reputable medical professionals who adhere to approved stem cell treatments to ensure optimal outcomes and patient safety. Q: I just retired, and I’m ready to travel! What are the benefits of using a travel agent? A: Planning a trip can be time-consuming and overwhelming. Travel agents have established relationships with travel suppliers/cruise lines which enable us to secure better rates and incentives to our clients. By leveraging our industry connections, we can help you obtain the best value for your money. And, when booking with a Travel Agent, you are getting the services of an expert travel planner with no additional cost to you! So, take a vacation from planning your vacation-you’ll be glad you did! HOME FOR THEHolidays with Aesthetics Pro, Entrepreneur, and Mom,
Laura Crowley
to experience the fun that I’ve had. At Laura Jeannette and Co., our goal is to help dermatology offices, plastic surgery offices, and medspas grow revenue through training, education, and business consulting.
Interviewed by Amy Pocsik, Co-Founder of the
Women’s Business League
I’ve seen a lot in this industry, and one thing is for sure—there is no ceiling unless you make it. With determination, passion, and education, I worked my way up from front desk girl to entrepreneur, changing the skincare industry.
Tell us about you. How did you get started in the aesthetics industry? Most little girls head to the toy aisle at the drugstore. Not me. As a little girl, I roamed the beauty aisles and dreamed of buying all the skincare serums and moisturizers. I’ve always been obsessed with beauty products, so it’s no surprise that I made skincare my career.
What does home for the holidays mean to you? This special time of year is all about spending time with loved ones and creating memories that last a lifetime. I spend extra time carefully planning. As a busy mom and entrepreneur, being intentional with my time is important. This holiday season, I’m looking forward to taking my daughter to see the Rockettes, attending holiday parties with friends, and supporting my favorite charities.
I began my esthetics career right from high school, enrolling at Catherine Hinds Institute. While attending school, I worked the front desk at a local spa. That was just the foot in the door I needed because it kicked off my 20-year career. I created quite a following of dedicated clients whom I loved, and they loved me back.
The holidays are also a time to take really great care of my clients. Everyone wants to look and feel their best. We want our skin to glow with little to no down time. It is very important to me to support my clients with great skincare and treatments so they can walk into any room feeling amazing.
However, at some point, I realized that I felt stuck. It was when I started expanding my education that my passion reemerged. My clients were happier, so business was growing. The spa I worked at began to thrive when I started training my coworkers on the different modalities and products I was learning. Eventually, I took on the role of Director of Education. Today, I own my own skincare clinic and still treat my clients to the best facials. At the same time, I’m using my expertise to change the skincare industry. I want to see this industry keep growing and for others
The holidays are an extremely busy time in the beauty industry. What is it like for you? This time of year is the busiest for beauty pros. Think about it. Just about every one of our clients wants to get in for a treatment in the couple of weeks right before the holidays. It can be a lot. I find having a great team and support system makes all the difference. So, check in on the beauty pros! They are working hard. Consider bringing them a coffee this holiday season, it will make their day! MERRY AND BRIGHT

ne of the best gifts you can give is the investment in yourself. That’s not always easy. As a Plastic Surgeon, I often have
conversations with women, especially moms, where my clients express a sense of guilt when they want to have a procedure done. I always like to ask them, “When was the last time you did something for yourself? When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? It’s important to take inventory of yourself in all areas of your life, and appearance is something that can impact it. Ask yourself, “What would be a gift I would like to receive to look and feel my best?’ Whether it’s surgical or non-surgical, investing in yourself through plastic surgery can be a tremendous gift. One of the things I love so much about patients that give themselves the gift of a procedure is how it, more times than not, sparks additional changes that enhance other areas of their lives. Whether it’s updating their wardrobe, traveling, or attending a dance class that they had been too afraid to take, the gift of having an aesthetic procedure almost always brings a renewed level of confidence and creates a beautiful journey of self-improvement. When you ask yourself the important questions, you start the steps to prioritizing yourself, and with a healthy mindset and self-care practices, you can ensure that your decision will be rooted in self-love and personal growth, a decision that will go beyond any external changes. This holiday season, remember it’s okay to give

5 TIPS
FOR COPING WITH HOLIDAY STRESS Dr. Beverly J. Pedroche @drpedroche
I
f buying the perfect (but out-of-your-budget) gift, baking an exquisite dessert that could compete with those made by Martha Stewart, or decorating your home to look like a photo straight out of a design magazine, all while managing your usual daily responsibilities leaves you feeling overwhelmed, you aren’t alone. As a psychologist, my practice becomes very busy this time of year, which tells me that the holidays aren’t merry for all. Stress can crush your holiday spirit and be detrimental to your mental health. Here are five tips to help fend off the holiday blues: 1. SAY NO. When you say yes to one thing, you’re saying no to something else. By agreeing to another holiday party, are you missing out on snuggle time with your kids or giving Fido a much-needed bath? It can be hard to say no and even harder to rescind an offer once you’ve agreed to something; however, learning to say no can prevent burnout or even resentment. If unsure, it’s okay to ask for time to think about it. You can also negotiate and make an offer that’s doable for you. For example, “I don’t have time to bake a dessert, but I can pick up cookies from the bakery.” And if you just don’t want to do something, try saying, “Thanks for asking, but I don’t have time,” or “I’m not available to help this year.” Prioritize what brings joy. Remember, there are only 24 hours in the day. How do you want to spend them? 2. DON’T NEGLECT SELF-CARE. Self-care isn’t just about pedicures and massages. Self-care is anything you do to “fill up your gas tank.” Daily
responsibilities require gas from our human (emotional and physical) gas tank. Like a car, if you don’t refuel, you’ll stall out. Self-care is your fuel, and it doesn’t have to break the bank. A walk, a power nap, or reading a book are forms of self-care. Self-care is also about what you don’t do. Saying no and setting boundaries are forms of self-care, too (see above). 3. SET REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS. Pinterest and TikTok can be great for ideas, but you probably don’t have time to hand-knit chunky blankets for twenty of your besties. Be kind to yourself. Things will go wrong. Don’t let your goal of perfection take away from experiences with loved ones. 4. AVOID OVERSPENDING. Set a budget and stick to it. Suggest a gift exchange to decrease the number of gifts you purchase or give gifts from the heart, like a “coupon” for dog-walking or babysitting. 5. MAINTAIN HEALTHY HABITS. Don’t let the holidays ruin healthy habits that you’ve created in the months prior. These habits will be some of your best defenses against stress. While it’s okay to occasionally skip a workout or eat the treat, do your best to keep your healthy habits intact, including a healthy sleep schedule, staying active, meditating, journaling, and therapy appointments. Keeping scheduled therapy sessions helps ensure you have opportunities to explore, problem-solve, and process those sticky situations and not-so-cheerful feelings that can arise during the holidays. If you’re missing a loved one or feeling like Scrooge, allow yourself to experience those emotions. Don’t isolate yourself. Seek professional help if needed. You aren’t alone if you need extra support during this time of year. Dr. Pedroche is available to work with patients in 39 states. MERRY AND BRIGHT

Grieving as a Couple: NAVIGATING LOSS IN A RELATIONSHIP
G
rief is a powerful and complex emotion that can have a profound impact on couples when they experience it within a relationship. In this article, we will explore the intricacies of grieving as a couple and offer strategies to navigate this challenging journey together.
1. Acknowledge Differences in Grief Grief is a deeply personal experience influenced by various factors such as cultural background, emotional expression, timing, communication styles, and coping mechanisms. It’s crucial to recognize that each partner may grieve differently. Here are some key aspects to consider: Cultural and Personal Influences: Cultural backgrounds and personal experiences play a significant role in how individuals express and process grief. Understanding these differences is essential. Emotional Expression: Some people are naturally more expressive with their emotions, while others may be more reserved. Respect these differences as coping mechanisms. Timing: Grief is not a linear process, and people may move through its stages at different rates. Patience is vital when one partner is further along in their grief journey than the other.
•
Communication Styles: People express their grief verbally in various ways. Some may find solace in talking about their feelings, while others may prefer non-verbal outlets.
•
Coping Mechanisms: Coping strategies can vary widely, with some seeking social support and others needing solitude. 56
To navigate these differences effectively:
WINTER 2023
• •
Have an open conversation with your partner about your unique grieving styles. Respect each other’s boundaries regarding grief. Avoid comparing your partner’s grief to your own or others’ experiences. Be patient, understanding that grief is a fluid process.
By acknowledging and respecting these differences, you can maintain a supportive and compassionate relationship during times of loss.
2. Seek Professional Help Grief, especially when experienced as a couple, can become overwhelming and complex. There may come a point where seeking professional assistance is not just advisable but essential. Here’s why it’s crucial: A Safe and Neutral Space: Grief can stir up intense emotions, leading to misunderstandings or conflict within the relationship. A trained therapist or counselor provides a safe and neutral space for both partners to express their feelings without judgment. Expert Guidance: Grief counselors and therapists are equipped with the knowledge and experience to help couples navigate the intricacies of grief. They can offer guidance, coping strategies, and tools for effective communication. Addressing Complicated Grief: Sometimes, grief becomes complicated, hindering the healing process. Conditions such as prolonged grief disorder or clinical depression may develop, requiring professional intervention.
Resolution of Unresolved Issues: Grief can bring unresolved issues and emotions within a relationship to the surface. Professional help can provide a structured and supportive environment to work through these issues. To seek professional help effectively: • • • • •
Find a therapist or counselor experienced in grief and relationships. Set clear goals for therapy with your partner. Be open and honest during therapy sessions. Commit to attending sessions regularly. In cases of severe mental health issues, seek immediate help from a crisis hotline or healthcare provider.
Seeking professional help is a sign of strength and a proactive approach to maintaining the health and wellbeing of your relationship during challenging times.

3. Embrace Rituals and Traditions Rituals and traditions play a significant role in the grieving process. They provide structure, meaning, and closure while commemorating the loss and honoring the loved one. Here’s how they can help:
Foster Connection: Rituals and traditions offer a shared experience, bonding partners through their collective effort to honor the loss. Provide a Safe Outlet: These practices offer a purposeful way to express intense emotions and provide an outlet for sorrow, anger, and love. Mark Important Milestones: Regular rituals, such as anniversaries or memorial gatherings, provide moments to remember and process the loss together. Create a Sense of Continuity: Rituals and traditions remind you that the memory of your loved one lives on, creating a sense of continuity. Promote Healing: They offer a healing and comforting presence during the grieving process, facilitating a shift from despair to acceptance. Consider these ideas for rituals and traditions: 58

The choice of rituals and traditions should reflect your unique relationship with the lost loved one. Discuss these ideas with your partner and select practices that resonate with both of you.
4. Plan for the Future Planning for the future during grief may seem counterintuitive, but it’s essential for several reasons: Restoring Hope: Planning for the future can help restore a sense of hope and purpose, allowing you to look beyond the immediate pain and envision brighter days ahead. Honoring the Past: It’s a way to pay tribute to the impact your loved one had on your life. Coping Mechanism: Constructive future planning can serve as a coping mechanism, providing a healthy distraction from overwhelming grief.
Building Resilience: It’s an opportunity to build resilience as a couple by demonstrating your ability to navigate through grief and grow together.
Rediscovering Shared Values: Grief prompts a reevaluation of shared values and goals, providing an opportunity to reaffirm them.
To plan for the future effectively:
Coping Strategies: Discover effective coping strategies that work for both of you, valuable tools for handling future challenges.
• • • • •
Set goals and aspirations for your personal lives and as a couple. Create a vision board that represents the future you hope to build together. Explore new hobbies or interests. Reevaluate your relationship, addressing any unresolved issues. If there are financial implications, reevaluate your financial situation and make necessary adjustments.
While planning for the future is essential, allow yourselves to grieve and heal at your own pace. By setting goals, creating a vision for your future, and working through the grief as a couple, you honor your loved one’s memory and foster growth and resilience within your relationship.
5. Grow Together
To grow together through grief: Regularly check in with each other about your emotional states, needs, and expectations. • • • • •
Consider couples therapy or counseling. Lean on each other for support. Participate in support groups. Celebrate milestones and achievements. Create new rituals as a couple.
Growing together through grief is a testament to the resilience and strength of your relationship. While you’ll never forget the loss, you can emerge from this experience as a more connected and resilient couple. Grief has the potential to transform your relationship into a source of solace, support, and shared growth.
Grief is a transformative experience that can either tear a couple apart or bring them closer together. Here’s how couples can grow together while navigating the challenging journey of grief: Strengthening the Emotional Bond: Supporting each other through vulnerability and raw emotions deepens your emotional connection. Improved Communication: Navigating grief together often leads to improved communication skills. Resilience Building: Facing grief as a couple builds resilience, serving as a source of strength and a reminder of your ability to overcome adversity. Empathy and Compassion: Witnessing your partner’s grief and experiencing your own fosters empathy and compassion.

From prepping our skin to accentuate areas worth highlighting and deemphasize our not-so-favorable areas, we get a hands-on, under-the-hood tutorial from someone who’s done it for years!
Erica Taylor has been in the cosmetic industry for over 25 years, working for top brands like MAC, Laura Mercier, Benefit Cosmetics, and Trish McEvoy. She is a professional makeup artist and mom of three living in New York. Interestingly, Erica, who majored in art education in college, initially aspired to be an art teacher. Instead, she decided to search for a career that would allow her to be more creative. Erica was always the unofficial makeup artist for her friends and family, and an interview at the MAC counter at Macy's became her official start to her professional career in makeup. In 2021, she started sharing her makeup tips and techniques for any age on her social media and has quickly become a trusted expert to her more than 1.4 million engaged followers. In 2023, she earned a spot in the L'Oreal Paris League of Experts and remains a major authoritative figure in the beauty and skincare space. The Beauty of Nostalgia
WELCOME TO 90S CON By Michelle Emmick
W
hether it’s a throwback song or a TV rerun, we all have that nostalgic attachment to past media. For me, those strong core memories were the 90s — a time when so many of us felt free of responsibility, a beautiful time before technology took over our lives. The 90s brought us amazing music, ridiculously fun fashion, and every mustsee television show. Those were the days. So imagine, over 30 years later, having nostalgia smack you right in the face with an invite to 90s Con, an event designed around the past to create memorable experiences for fans of that decade and a place to interact with all your favorite celebrities. OMG, yes, take me there (and back)! To say I was excited would be a massive understatement. I was a diehard fan of the iconic show 90210, and I certainly was not the only one. When I announced that I received my press passes for the event and shared who would be there, I heard from just about every one of my high school and college friends. That’s because we all remember that feeling, those Wednesday nights circling the television, waiting to watch the coolest teens on TV and receive some muchneeded closure on the prior week’s cliffhangers. Will Kelly pick Dillan or Brandon? Will Donna Martin graduate? We ALL lived for it, and I was about to be up close and personal with the biggest influences of my formative years. It felt like I was about to walk the halls of West Beverly.

WINTER 2023
From the moment I opened the doors of 90s Con, I was swept back in time. The venue was filled with old-school music and back-in-the-day pop culture memorabilia, which included everything from Blockbuster to bright-colored fashions. As I cased the arena, I knew exactly where my first stop would take me: Jason Priestley. Jason played the character Brandon Walsh, the ridiculously good-looking and smart boy next door who moved from a small town in Minnesota to Beverly Hills, California. (Yes, I was team Brandon.) I slowly made my way toward my teenage crush, my heart racing. I’ve been face-to-face with many celebrities, but this one felt different. I had to laugh at myself because here I was, a 50-year-old woman, and I was now reverting to a tongue-tied, starry-eyed girl. When we finally met, the words just didn’t want to come out, though I did manage to attempt a question or two and actually made him laugh with a joke about us aging. Honestly, it was all a blur. I wasn’t on my A-game, and I certainly wasn’t prepared for how I would feel, but I didn’t care. That was the beauty of it. That’s what the event was all about — to make people have fun and smile and to take our aging minds back to those beautiful memories of our youth. It did all that and more. Throughout the event, the Ask Us Beauty team had the opportunity to speak with cast members from the show. Jason Priestly was kind, and both Jennie Garth and Gabrielle Carteris (who played Kelly Taylor and Andrea Zuckerman) were sweet; Tori Spelling (who played Donna Martin) was funny
ADRIAN RUIZ | PHOTO CREDIT and animated, and Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green (who played Steve Sanders and David Silver) were down to earth. The most powerful event was a panel discussion during which Shannon Doherty (who played Brenda Walsh) openly shared about her long and difficult health battle. It was an emotional moment that received a standing ovation from all who attended. The camaraderie amongst the cast was evident throughout 90s Con, even after all these years. Those long-term relationships are unbreakable, and nostalgia is thriving.

SUN, SAND, AND SANTA An Aussie’s Summer Christmas By Kylie Malcolm
A
llow me to take you on a journey from my sunny Australian shores to share how we celebrate Christmas down under. While you’re cozied up with hot cocoa and snow boots, we’re chillin’ (literally) by the beach and trading snowmen for sandcastles. Welcome to a true blue Aussie Christmas!
Tanning While You’re Caroling: Just imagine basking in the glorious summer sun, a gentle summer breeze rustles your hair as “Jingle Bells” plays in the background. Confusing? Perhaps. Magical? Absolutely. While many dream of a white Christmas, ours is painted with blue skies, sparkling oceans, shimmering sands, and hot summer days. Beach, Please! Over the festive season, kids don their Santa hats while making sand castles and playing beach cricket, while adults lay back, soaking up the sun or indulging in an impromptu beach barbie (that’s BBQ, for all you non-Aussies out there). And let me tell you, spotting Santa surfing the waves in board shorts is an Aussie hallmark. Christmas Lunch Fit for a King: We usually set up long tables in the backyard, right by the pool or BBQ. Picture this: a mix of the traditional roast lunch, beautifully accompanied by a feast of salads and seafood, with cooked prawns and fresh oysters often stealing the show. Oh, and if you’ve never tried a pavlova for dessert, you are seriously missing out.
Dive into Christmas: Nothing beats the post-feast heat like a plunge in the pool. Many of my fondest memories involve jumping into the water after unwrapping presents and devouring a huge Christmas lunch, competing with siblings and family members to see who makes the biggest splash. And, yes, inflatable Santas and reindeer are totally valid pool floaties. Singing Under the Stars: One tradition Australians love best is Carols by Candlelight. At nightfall, we gather in cities and towns across the country, candles in hand, to serenade the warm starlit skies with Christmas melodies as the sun sets in the distance. There’s something magical about voices rising in unison, lit by flickering candlelight and the Southern Cross above. Cricket Cheers: While you might be recovering from Christmas feasting, Boxing Day here has us eating leftovers or cooking up a BBQ while glued to the TV for the iconic cricket test match. It’s another staple, uniting families in their shared enthusiasm, cheers, and occasional playful disputes. So, for those in the Northern Hemisphere, as you’re bundled up and dreaming of a different kind of Christmas adventure, remember us Aussies. We’re down here, sending sunny vibes your way, proving that the Christmas spirit shines brightly, regardless of the season. Merry Christmas from Down Under! kyliemalcolm.com

WINTER 2023
CLOSING THOUGHTS Ah, the holiday season – when the whole world sparkles, and even the grinchiest grinches find it hard to resist the season’s magical charm! Beyond the twinkling lights, it’s a time when families and friends come together to create lasting memories, exchange gifts, and share in the warmth and love of each other’s company. However, for many people, the holidays can also bring feelings of uncertainty or stress. As we navigate the ups and downs of the holiday season, let us remember the power of positivity and how it can bring joy, meaning, and fulfillment to our lives. Here are three little nuggets to remember before entering the holidays and to keep with you throughout the new year: Discover What Brings You Joy: Joy has the ability to shine and ripple outward, so make a list of things that bring you joy and look for chances to infuse them into your daily life. Acts of kindness, generosity, and empathy, which tend to be everywhere during this season, can shine a light for both the giver and the receiver all year round. Embrace Unity: One of the most beautiful things we can learn from the holidays is the way it brings people together. Community and unity strengthens the bonds between us and creates a sense of understanding that is at the heart of the holiday spirit. Keep an eye out for opportunities throughout the year to bring people together, and the rest will naturally fall into place. Express Gratitude: During the holiday season, gratitude can be as cozy as a warm, fuzzy sweater. Don’t just save it for the chilly days – wear it yearround. Gratitude is like a magic mirror, reflecting back all the goodness in your life and reminding you to count your blessings.
Thank you, our incredible contributors and readers, for joining us in celebrating the magic of the holidays and for helping us embrace the lessons of joy, unity, and gratitude. May the spirit of the holidays stay with you, and may you continue to find purpose and joy in each passing day. Here’s to a year filled with love, light, and the lasting lessons from the heart. Cheers to the magic of the holidays and endless positivities!
The lessons learned from the holiday season are not meant to be packed away with the decorations. They are meant to be carried in our hearts, guiding our actions and enriching our lives throughout the year. As we close this issue, we look forward to the promise of the seasons ahead and the stories yet to be shared. MERRY AND BRIGHT
