y 12-year-old daughter is always quick to point out that whenever I express my opinion, I start with, “I’ve read somewhere...” She typically responds, “Really, Mom?” To which I counter with something like, “Avid readers have great perspective,” or her least favorite, “That’s right. ABC: always be learning!” (Insert tween eye roll). It’s true. I read a lot. I don’t always remember where I read something because there’s a lot going on in my head, but I keep certain information at the forefront of my mind for good reason. So, to communicate my sentiment for this issue, I will start by saying I’ve read somewhere that external inspiration feeds internal inspiration. I believe that’s why I’ve always been drawn to reading about the minds of leaders. How do they think? What do they believe? What steps have they taken to become a high-level, bold achiever? What does it take to live boldly, whether it’s changing a career, starting a new relationship, moving to another city, or going for a big win? Internally, we all have big dreams and a vision of what we want. Making those things a reality, however, is where we get stuck. For me, it starts with my belief system. When I’m in doubt, I ask myself, “What’s the worst that can happen? Fear of failure? Fear of judgment? What is holding me back from just going for it?” I like to write my thoughts down. When I see it in writing, my perspective changes. For some reason, it feels different on paper and less scary. Formulating a plan and figuring out the steps I need to take to move toward my dreams and goals becomes easier. I also like to write down my accomplishments, both big and small, and the final step is focusing on who and what inspires me. I love to soak in as much knowledge as possible and follow the people who lead by example and impact others. Those individuals have a strong enough belief in themselves to know that, as scary as it is to make bold moves, they most often lead to a better place and, sometimes, even your biggest dreams. Tamron Hall, the inspirational, bold move-maker herself, leads our latest issue of AUB. Tamron has made a positive and lasting imprint on everything she’s touched, and she shares some of that beautiful wisdom with us.
In my interview with Tamron, we discussed parts of her journey and the steps of courage she has developed to follow and create a path to bold greatness, which recently includes her new book, Watch Where They Hide. My hope for this issue is that you take in some of that “external inspiration” from my interview with Tamron and all the articles within these pages and that you’re left with some “internal inspiration.” I hope that you will embrace the discomfort required to take bold steps, and I hope that you face the fear of calling the shots in your life. I hope you are left with the “I read” moments that allow you to trust yourself to make bold moves. Ways to Stay on Track with Your Goals When the New Year Buzz Wears Off
e’ve all been there – starting the New Year with a burst of enthusiasm, setting ambitious resolutions, and feeling unstoppable. Fast forward a few weeks, and that ‘New Year, New Me’ spirit starts to wane. But fear not! Keeping your motivation high after the initial excitement of New Year’s resolutions is not just possible; it can be enjoyable, too. Let’s dive into how to keep that January zest alive all year.

5. Seek Support and Accountability You’re not in this alone! Share your goals with friends or family. Having someone to share your journey with can be incredibly motivating, so find a group of people who share your goals and interests. From fitness to business, many networks are full of people who share your passion and can help keep you engaged.
1. Reflect and Refine Your Goals First things first: let’s talk about your goals. Were they realistic? If you’re overwhelmed, break them into smaller, more manageable pieces. Remember, it’s not about lowering your standards but setting achievable targets that keep you motivated rather than discouraged.
6. Refresh Your Routine Boredom is often the enemy of motivation. If your routine is feeling stale, switch it up. Try a new workout class, experiment with healthy new recipes, or find a new podcast for personal growth. Keeping things fresh can rekindle your enthusiasm.
2. Celebrate the Small Wins Every step forward, no matter how small, is progress. Did you drink more water today or go for a short walk? Pat yourself on the back! Celebrating these tiny victories boosts your morale and reinforces your commitment to your goals. 3. Find Your Why Reconnect with the reasons behind your resolutions. Did you want to feel healthier or learn a new skill? Reconnecting with your ‘why’ can reignite your passion and keep you driven. Sometimes, the most significant motivation comes from remembering the purpose behind your actions. 4. Embrace Flexibility Life is unpredictable, and rigid plans can sometimes set us up for disappointment. Be flexible with your approach. If you miss a workout, don’t stress. If you need to rework a timeline for a goal, just adjust and move forward. It’s not an excuse to give up, but flexibility in your goals allows you to adapt and overcome unexpected challenges.
Maintaining motivation beyond the New Year doesn’t have to be a daunting task. You can keep the momentum going all year by setting realistic goals, celebrating small successes, staying flexible, and seeking support. Remember, the journey towards your goals is as important as the destination. Keep pushing forward, stay positive, and make this year one to remember!

Phew, Now What?! Let’s get personal. If I were to guess, you have been through a difficult challenge at some point in your life. “What do I do now?” is one of the most challenging questions we ask ourselves during challenging times. Fear can too easily creep into our minds, and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel can be a struggle. The good news is that there is always a solution that is personal and unique to you. During certain times in our lives, the baggage we carry can become overwhelming. This stems from experiences that we have allowed to limit us. We end up putting on preverbal blinders that stop us from succeeding as we used to. People have their own perspectives on how to get to the next phase of their lives, and some may have no idea what to do next. Luckily, I have some tools you can use to help make those bold decisions, move in the right direction, and see a new path. STARTING POINT 1. Take 15 to 30 minutes just for you. Let your mind be at peace in a quiet space while taking long, deep breaths. 2. Write down how you got to where you are up to this point and what allowed you to get there. Take your time. 3. Remember when you were the most successful and the most driven. How does writing it down make you feel?
5. Now, write down your current obstacles or responsibilities. These things limit us today out of fear and close our eyes to other possibilities. 6. Here is where the real work comes in. Go back and read # 2. Sit and absorb the thoughts and feelings that came with your success. In order to discover your additional talents at this point in your life, you must separate your fears from your responsibilities and ENVISION the opportunity ahead of you. 7. Start creating a vision for yourself without the noise of your responsibilities. See where your vision takes you and how you can get there. 8. Using your answers from above, take your revived enthusiasm and write the next chapter of your life. Be detailed. It’s your world! This exercise aims to help you recreate (or create) the feeling of success. We may not think the way we did in our youth, but the memory of how we used to feel can drive us to succeed. Finding My Voice,

L
ife has a way of orchestrating changes, nudging us into uncharted territories. In my case, it felt more like the sudden slamming of a door, locking away 26 years of my career as a morning anchor for WFLA News Channel 8 in Tampa, Florida. My vocal cords had started developing noncancerous calluses. The revelation from my otolaryngologist, commonly known as an ear, nose, and throat doctor, landed with staggering impact: “Gayle, you’re like an injured athlete; if you persist in the game, you may risk losing your voice entirely.” My heart plummeted. Despite my attempts to mask the pain with herbal teas and cough drops, the swelling in my throat persisted. If anything, the concoction of tea and the chemicals in the cough drops only served to

churn my stomach, amplifying the distressing reality of the life-changing scenario I was forced to face. With a heavy heart, I walked into my news director’s office to deliver the somber news that I had to step away from a job I cherished with all my heart. This all happened on the heels of losing both my parents, exactly a year apart. Not long after their passing, my sweet dog Dolce died, too, and now I faced the death of my career. I wasn’t ready to step away from my post as a morning co-anchor, and I worried about what would come next for a woman in her 50s who had only known one professional path. Before I could worry about that, I had to get my health in check. It wasn’t just my voice that was broken; my
whole body was in disarray. My thyroid was off, my hair was falling out, and my emotional health was in turmoil. The stress of everything just kept mounting, and I knew that before worrying about my next career move, I would have to work to heal myself on so many different levels.
Tampa-St. Petersburg’s NBC affiliate, but we are also syndicated in over 300 million households worldwide, including Roku TV, and Amazon Fire. Bloom has also gone digital with the “Bloom Health Club” streaming on Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Podcasts.
About six months into my healing journey, and in a much better place both emotionally and physically, I received a call from the management team at WFLA, my long-time employer. The call felt like it came straight from heaven. A new opportunity, not nearly as demanding as reading 4 ½ hours of straight live news, had arisen. They offered me the host position for their new health and wellness show, Bloom. I joined Executive Producer Elizabeth Motley and Director Terrance Middlebrooks to help put the show on the air in the middle of the pandemic. Bloom aired on WTTA, the sister station of the powerhouse WFLA. It didn’t come with a big audience or a lot of fanfare. The job was a far cry from my old high-profile position, but it was a step in a new direction, and I was happy to embrace it.
Through this incredible life transition, which at times felt very humbling, I learned every facet of growing a now globally syndicated show. I am a lead writer; I post stories on our website “Bloom Tampa Bay,” powered by WFLA; I know how to edit and piece together stories and how to research and interview leaders in the health and wellness industry. I have broadened my horizons in ways I never thought possible. I am forever grateful for the opportunity given to me by my team at WFLA and, of course, for the viewers who have now seen me through three decades of growing and changing in Tampa Bay. You have taught me that a career doesn’t have to have an expiration date, and that with enough perseverance, you can grow and change at any phase of life.
When the restrictions of the pandemic were lifted, I would run into kind viewers who would ask me about my health and how I was enjoying retirement. I would graciously thank them for caring and share the news that I was back with my former employer doing a health and wellness show. Most would cock their heads looking very confused, signaling to me that few people were watching Bloom. The months and then years marched on, and the show finally started getting traction. Our team expanded, and we brought on producer Sarah Smith. We worked together to find leaders in the health and wellness space who brought cutting-edge information to our viewers. As more people believed in the show and contributed incredible content, our viewership grew exponentially. Today, we not only air on WFLA FEARLESS

ighly successful achievers know you must challenge yourself and embrace adversity to make bold moves. Sometimes, those moves present themselves as opportunities; sometimes, you must create your own. Making bold moves is a lifelong commitment that requires courage, intention, and heart — all characteristics of journalist, reporter, executive producer, best-selling author, mom, wife, and Emmy Award-winning talk show host Tamron Hall. Tamron has never shied away from bold moves. She will tell you that her greatest advancements in life have come from two bold steps: showing up and facing fears. Now, Tamron openly shares that advice in the endearingly heartfelt way that only she can with her legion of adoring fans, the “Tam Fam.” “The big moves I’ve made often happened when my back was against the wall,” Tamron told us. “When I left my prior job to start ‘The Tamron Hall Show,’ people said, ‘You’re so courageous.’ I felt like I was shapeshifting a bit, pretending to be courageous when, in fact, I
was afraid. I was over 45, leaving my dream job and jumping into a new arena, and everyone kept reminding me of how many shows had failed before [mine].” As one of television’s most respected journalists for over 30 years, Tamron has lived in the public eye, and while admittedly fearful, she has never backed down from taking big, bold swings. After years of early career success working at several television stations, hosting “NewsNation,” a news program on MSNBC, and others, Tamron landed a coveted spot as a co-anchor on NBC’s “Today Show” in 2014. After only three years, however, Tamron lost her timeslot and boldly chose to walk away from the network. Tamron shared that the key to her next bold move was allowing herself time to deal with and process what had happened before jumping back into the game. “I want people to know that fear or even moments of doubt are not something to be embarrassed about,” she said. “We often believe the right way to cope is to put on a strong face, like, ‘I’m resilient; I can do it!’ For me, embracing fear became a motivating factor. Yes, I was afraid of failing. I was afraid of not getting another shot. I was afraid that all those years of studying and working hard to get to this point were in vain.” After giving herself the gift of feeling, Tamron was ready to make her next move. She even remembers the exact moment that everything clicked. “I read an article from actress Jennifer Anniston. She said, ‘Throw yourself a pity party, and then get up.’ She was right,” Tamron shared. “Part of dealing with the fear was acknowledging it. It was saying to other people, ‘I’m afraid, and I’m worried, but I’m going to throw this pity party, and then I’m going to get up and do it.’ So, face your fears!” In 2019, Tamron hit a home run, returning to TV with her self-titled talk show, “Tamron Hall,” a FEARLESS

daily entertainment destination. The hit show, now in its fifth season and recognized as a twotime Emmy-winner for Outstanding Daytime Talk Show Host, brings a fun and powerful yet authentic setting for heart-centered conversation. And if that wasn’t big and bold enough, Tamron stepped up to the plate and faced her fears again to create a new lane for herself as a crime novelist. Tamron released the first book of a three-novel series in 2021. As the Wicked Watch is a blend of crime fiction, mystery, and women’s literature that introduces us to Jordan Manning, a crime reporter who leaves her hometown of Texas to work at a television station in Chicago. There, she investigates the horrific murder of two young black women by a mysterious serial killer. The story is told solely from Jordan’s viewpoint and gives us a thrilling, behind-the-curtain look into investigative journalism. Jordan, who’s not 22

afraid to put herself in harm’s way for the truth, is warm, principled, and bold. While the novel is fiction, the parallels between her and Tamron are undeniable. “When I decided to write [Jordan Manning], I’d been approached to write a memoir. I’d also been approached to write both beauty and inspirational books. All these different ideas came to me, but none were my North Star,” Tamron shared. She knew she needed to take a leap of faith and send a message to herself and others that it’s okay to follow your own path and step out of the box. “I know those other books will come, but I wanted to write As the Wicked Watch and the whole series. I wanted to be bold,” Tamron said. “What defines life for me is facing that tingly feeling — whether it’s fear, defiance, or whatever it is — and doing it. And I had a tingly feeling.”
That’s just one of the likenesses between Tamron and Jordan Manning. Not only did Tamron do the thing, she hit a grand slam. As the Wicked Watch quickly became a best-seller, and her second release, Watch Where They Hide, debuts this March. Watch Where They Hide, led by Jordan Manning, follows the story of Marla Hancock, a stay-at-home mother who disappears after leaving her verbally abusive husband and moving in with her sister. Tragically, Tamron’s firsthand experiences informed Watch Where They Hide. Part of Tamron’s story is the heart-wrenching tragedy of the unsolved murder of her sister, Renate. Tamron shares that Renate suffered through years of abusive relationships, and her case was never solved. As deep and dark as that subject is, Tamron feels a calling to help educate and empower women so they don’t experience the same fate as Renate. She’s answering that call through her novels. “I created Jordan to help me deal with some of the horrible things that have happened,” Tamron revealed. “It was very therapeutic in processing what I’ve witnessed.” In addition to her personal connection to the devastating side of the murder-mystery genre, Tamron carried even more story insight from her six seasons as the host of “Deadline Crime.” The haunting tales from the show stayed with her. “I ended that show after being in an audio booth recording the story of a woman who did not know she was pregnant and was murdered. It was one of the last stories I covered for that show,” she told us. As emotionally taxing as the show was, its subjects left a lasting imprint on Tamron. “That show allowed families’ loved ones to be remembered. It is not standard for people to check in on the surviving loved ones; the media goes away, and then the families are FEARLESS

often forced to face that pain alone. The show allowed me to revisit cases and speak with family members who believed their loved ones had long been forgotten. I always keep that front of mind in [my] novels now.” Tamron’s storytelling is beautifully descriptive and riveting. While crime is a heavy subject, Tamron weaves in a lighter side, taking us on the character development journey of Jordan Manning’s background. The subplot of Jordan’s family, friendships, and love life as a single reporter gives the reader an upbeat break from the intense content of the stories she’s investigating. Readers can’t help but become invested in Jordan’s life and are quite literally on the edge of their seats, reading feverishly to find out what happens next. Jordan Manning is the Olivia Pope of true crime, so it is no surprise that the Jordan Manning novels are slated to be adapted into a television series. Across Tamron’s lifetime of bold moves and all those surely still to come, she believes two things have helped her remain grounded in joy: being present and a strong support system. “As a person who is creating, I am very passionate about everything I do, and it’s visible. At times, we can become elusive as we look for success. We start to look for other things, and we can forget the most beautiful thing is often right in front of us, and it is the simplest thing,” Tamron reflected. Tamron says her husband, Steven Greener, and son, Moses, keep her present and that a supportive network of friends is also critical. “It’s why I’m here,” she said. “It’s why I took the leap of faith with the show and my books. I’ve had the same best friend since I was four, and I say I’ve made stops along my friendship train. I have friends whom I met in elementary school all the way through college and then on and on and on. We all need that camaraderie, especially with other women.”

In the spirit of female camaraderie, Tamron wants people to know she’s trying to figure it out and taking leaps of faith like anyone else. “I want my book to not only be a juicy thriller read, but one that serves as an inspiration following character Jordan Manning as she pursues her dreams. I want people to follow their light, and when they get to the last part of the book and read the acknowledgment, I want people to see themselves in my journey and write their own book. I often stand in front of the mirror after a show with all my makeup off, all of that version of me erased. I stand in the mirror as a regular exercise and search for my seven-year-old self. My mom might say that’s when I was my boldest and most badass. I look for her because if, at 53, I can be as bold as she was, with freedom and a lack of worry, then I am living boldly. Never be afraid to live boldly.” As our time together concluded, it was time for the infamous final question, “How do you define beauty?” Tamron had this to say: “Beauty is the warm feeling of a tear streaming down your face. Whether it’s joy or it’s pain, it’s a sensation of relief. Beauty is the feeling of relief. It’s the feeling of allowing what’s in to come out. here’s a moment each year in Taos, New Mexico, when the sun has just set, and every member of the town is buzzing through the winding Southwest streets, waiting for the daylight to be replaced by beams of light emanating from larger-than-life art installations occupying the historic downtown space. Lights, sounds, and structures come alive as spectators of all ages receive a palpable experience of art through an immersive interaction. It’s moments like these that The Paseo Project team lives for. Taos has been a paradigm of artistic expression for nearly one thousand years, from the earliest Puebloan traditions to modern innovations. The well of inspiration in Taos runs deep, and The Paseo Project makes the life source of art accessible to the whole town. Since 2014, The Paseo Project has integrated art and community as agents for reciprocal transformation by bringing art to the people of Taos and inviting them to create and interact with it. Thanks to founder J. Matt Thomas and his dedicated team, including Operations and Programs Manager Contessa Trujillo and Education Manager Amber Vasquez, what started as a one-night art festival has evolved into a two-night celebration and year-round programming for local, national, and 28

international artists and Taoseños of all ages. “I see Paseo as sort of an urban design intervention. What would happen if we brought art out to the streets for two days and invited the community? The idea was to showcase art you can’t hang on a wall,” Thomas shared. “We partnered with a local arts organization called the Taos Fall Arts Festival, and then, over time, we grew to become our own entity and incorporated as a 501c3 and really started to expand our programming.” The PASEO Festival, now a highly-anticipated annual affair, allows residents to get up close and personal with an array of art, including light and sound projections, installations, and performance art. The result is an immersive experience in which the art more or less requires spectator participation, thereby empowering them as artists themselves, a phenomenon Thomas describes as a unique “Taos aesthetic.” “Artists come to us saying, ‘I’ve never seen such participation and engagement!’ From the very beginning, we realized our community wants to touch it; they want to be part of the art. They are artists themselves, and they want to engage. The community is part of the design,” said Thomas.
Everything The Paseo Project does puts the community first. This is particularly true of its Education Program, spearheaded by Education Manager Amber Vasquez. This year-round, cross-curricular programming brings artists into community schools, exposing elementary through high school students to all methods of art making, fostering engagement and encouraging world and self-exploration through art. Paseo’s presence in schools has inspired nearly a decade’s worth of Taos youth, some of whom have gone on to pursue careers in art. “I particularly remember a fifth-grade student who connected with one of our artists. The artist was kind to the student and let them help carry supplies out to their car. Just that small interaction sparked something in that student in a cool way. That student later became an intern for us and now works in theatre,” Vasquez shared.

DANCE FITNESS HOW I LEARNED TO LOVE MYSELF AND OTHERS THROUGH DANCE By Jordan Peden
I
’ve had a complicated relationship with my body for as long as I can remember. There have been periods of grace, loathing, and everything in between. I’ve spent my whole life wavering between being at peace with who I am and constantly trying to ‘improve’ myself. Fitness has always been my best friend in that regard — my go-to for self-improvement. I’ve been in the cross-fit trenches, pretended to be a runner, and I’m still very much aboard the Peloton train. And while my history with fitness has had benefits for my mental and physical health, it hasn’t done much for my constant body image tug-of-war. Two years ago, my partner and I relocated across the country to Maine. We were completely alone in a new city with our then-18-month-old. Before I knew it, it was time for my kiddo to start preschool. Until then, I’d stayed home with her, writing during naps and after bedtime to bring in extra money. Now, I was staring down 24 hours a week of “extra time” (whatever that means). After looking into some part-time opportunities, I stumbled across a listing for a company called Body Positive Dance Fitness. I took the leap, and everything just seemed to click. From my first conversation with the Marketing Director

to meeting with the owners, sisters Carson Burnham and Erin Evans, I was sold on their vision and mission. After taking and teaching dance fitness classes for years, Carson and Erin began dreaming of a space where every body who walked through their doors was celebrated and supported. They founded Body Positive Dance Fitness in June of 2023 and spent the next six months renovating a 7,000-square-foot studio space. Today, they see their dream come alive each day as hundreds of women and men pour into the studio, leaving their worries at the door and letting their hair down for an hour of dance. They call it (and rightfully so) the happiest workout in Maine. Before working for Body Positive Dance Fitness, I had never stepped foot in a dance fitness class. Truthfully, I scoffed at Zumba — my being the fitness snob I was. But, I was so impressed with what the sisters were building that I decided it was time to let go of my preconceived notions and give it a go. And I’m so glad I did. All it took was one class, and I was hooked. I was terrible at the choreography, I sweat profusely, and I was so happy. It didn’t matter that I missed steps. No one cared, and it was the most fun I had ever had “working out.” I wasn’t focused
on my perceived faults the whole time. I wasn’t comparing myself to anyone. I was just enjoying myself, and I was able to carry that energy for the rest of the day.

t’s the New Year, and if you are like most, you’ve got some fitness goals you’d like to achieve this year. But the truth is, if you approach your fitness and exercise routine the way you always have, you can most likely expect the results you’ve always gotten. So, if you want a true transformation this year, it’s time to switch things up. Here are five simple but effective ways to improve your workout game and get your desired results. 1. Say hello to heavier weights: Let’s kick things off by beefing up your lifting game. Upping your weights can feel daunting, but trust me, your muscles will thank you. When you lift heavier, you’re challenging your body in new ways, leading to better muscle growth and strength. Plus, it’s a serious boost for your metabolism. The result? A stronger, leaner you. As I always tell my clients, “Stop cheating yourself with lightweights. Chances are your purse weighs more than that!” And don’t worry about bulking up – unless you are a competitive athlete (who works really hard for that much muscle, by the way), bulking up is NOT a thing. 2. Ease up on the cardio: Don’t get me wrong, cardio has its place. But if

your workout is all cardio, all the time, you might be missing out on some key benefits of a balanced routine. Reducing cardio can help preserve muscle mass and focus your energy on strength training. It’s about finding that sweet spot where cardio is complementing your goals rather than dominating them. 3. Sometimes, less is more. You don’t need a complex routine with fancy equipment to see results. If you are just getting started, simplify your workout. Begin by focusing on basic, compound movements that work multiple muscle groups. These exercises are time-efficient, effective, and easy to progress as you get stronger. Plus, they reduce the risk of getting overwhelmed, which can be a major buzzkill for your motivation. As you progress, you can move to more isolated exercises, but for now, keep it simple. 4. Focus on form, not just reps: It’s easy to get caught up in counting reps and sets, but what really matters is how you perform each exercise. Good form ensures
you’re targeting the right muscles and staying injury-free. Knowing which muscles you are working with each exercise is critical to maintaining that mind/body connection. Slow down, focus on your movement, and make each rep count. Quality over quantity always wins.

5. Rest and recover: This one’s crucial. More workouts don’t always equal more results. Your body needs time to recover and repair. Include rest days in your routine, get plenty of sleep, and don’t skip on nutrition – your body needs fuel to rebuild. (Your hormones will also thank you!) Incorporating these changes won’t just breathe new life into your routine; they’ll jumpstart you in the right direction to achieve your goals. hen I think of being bold, I think of being brave, daring, and courageous. Because I have challenged myself to make a bold move in fitness, it has led me to a newfound passion: Personal Training. Savoring Spring Recipes

1 tablespoon of shallot, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons cilantro leaves, chopped
For the vinaigrette • 1 teaspoon honey: • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar • ½ teaspoon black soy sauce • ½ teaspoon of black vinegar • ½ teaspoon sesame oil • 2 tablespoons avocado or other vegetable oil • salt and pepper to taste Instructions Roast the brussels sprouts. Add the brussels sprouts to a large bowl and toss them with 3 teaspoons of oil plus the salt and pepper. Spread them out in a single layer on the preheated baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes then remove from oven and add the garlic and shallots. Stir to mix everything together. Return the baking sheet to the oven and roast for an additional 5 minutes or until the brussels are very browned and crisp. Ingredients For the salad: • 4 teaspoons avocado oil, divided • 1 ½ cups brussels sprouts, thinly sliced • ¼ cup red cabbage • 1 medium carrot, shredded • 1 clove of garlic, thinly sliced • ¼ cup of spring onions • ¼ cup of red onions 38

Make the dressing. Add the honey, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, black vinegar and sesame oil to a small bowl or mason jar. Mix to combine. Add the avocado oil, salt and pepper and mix again until all the ingredients are incorporated. Assemble the salad. After the Brussels are cooled, add them to a large mixing bowl. Add the cabbage, carrots and onions. Toss to combine, add the dressing, and toss again. Top with cilantro and serve.
Asian Braised Beef
Prep time 20 minutes Cook time 3- 3.5 hours Total time 3-4 hours Serves 6 Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
3 pounds beef chuck 4 Tbsp vegetable oil 1 tsp kosher salt 2 leeks, trimmed and thinly sliced 3 green onions, thinly sliced (both green and white parts) ¼ c ginger, minced or 1 Tbsp ginger paste 5 garlic cloves minced ½ c soy sauce 1 c beef broth ¼ c sugar ½ tsp ground cloves 2 tsp cinnamon 1 ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes Baby bok choy Jasmine rice, cooked Cilantro, chopped Jalapeno, sliced

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. 2. Using a Dutch oven, add 2 tbsp oil and bring pan to high temperature. Season the meat with salt. When smoke begins from the Dutch oven, add in the cut of chuck roast. Sear both sides of meat for 4-6 minutes until it browns. 3. After searing the meat, remove the meat and add remaining oil. Saute the green onions, leeks, garlic and ginger. 4. In a medium bowl, whisk together beef broth, soy sauce, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and red pepper flakes. 5. Add the beef broth mixture to the sauteed onions. Using a wooden spoon, scrape the brown bits off the bottom to deglaze the pan. Bring to a boil, then remove the pan from heat. Place the beef in the sauce—the liquid should come up halfway on the meat—cover, and place in oven with lid on. (Can use an ovenproof pan if you do not have a Dutch oven, cover it with foil before placing in the oven.) 6. Bake for 3-3.5 hours, or until beef is tender and begins to fall apart. 7. When the beef is done, shred it, then mix it with the remaining sauce mixture at the bottom of the Dutch oven. Keep warm and set aside. 8. The stalk and the leaves cook at different rates, so it is important to do the stalk first and add leaves at the end. 9. Serve the braised beef over rice (I prefer Jasmine, but any rice or noodles will work) with sautéed baby bok choy, fresh bell pepper, jalapeño, avocado, lime, mint, and cilantro. Garnish with chives. Add Sriracha for more heat. *This dish can also be prepared in a crock pot. Cook on high for 4-5 hours or low for 6-8 hours.

Mom guilt is not abnormal and isn’t an indication that you’re doing anything wrong. But it is a sign that you likely need to adjust your mindset. I practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a highly effective treatment method backed by decades of scientific research. The premise behind CBT is that we all have unhealthy thoughts called cognitive distortions that lead us to act and feel a certain way. By changing those thoughts, using evidence-based techniques, we can change the way we behave and feel. Three common cognitive distortions that contribute to mom guilt are comparisons, shoulds, and all-or-nothing thinking. Comparisons. Oh, those feelings of inadequacy that emerge when you see Susan post pictures of her perfect charcuterie board with those fancy salami roses while you’re lucky to remember to throw a Lunchables and juice box into your kid’s lunchbox. You’re comparing one part of your life to her highlight reel, leaving you feeling less-than. Instead, focus on yourself. When you catch yourself stalking Susan’s social media and engaging in comparisons, challenge and replace those thoughts with thoughts that are focused on the good efforts you’ve made (there are many, I assure you) and be proud! In doing so, you can challenge and correct your comparison thoughts which can lessen guilt and boost self-worth.

Shoulds. Shoulds are unrealistic, madeup rules and expectations that leave you feeling frustrated, anxious, and disappointed. The message created when you use should statements is that you’re not good enough. “I should be more involved in my kid’s activities.” “I shouldn’t be so tired at the end of the day.” Instead, work on self-compassion and reframe your thoughts to be more realistic and kind. Rather than “I should be more involved in my kid’s activities,” say, “I participated in the mother-kid event this month, and we both had a really nice time.” All-or-nothing thinking. All-or-nothing thinking refers to thinking in extremes. You’re either a success or a failure. Your performance was perfect or terrible. All-or-nothing thinking is often the root of perfectionism and can destroy self-esteem. “I missed the last soccer game. I’m a terrible mother.” Really? Is it a fact (not a feeling, feelings aren’t always facts) that because you didn’t go to all the games, you’re a terrible mother? Does going to all the games make you a perfect mother? Instead, gather overlooked evidence that supports the fact that you’re an awesome mom. Shift your mindset by checking your facts, finding shades of grey, and learning to see things on a continuum. Don’t let mom guilt prevent you from enjoying experiences with your children. Therapy can help you learn more strategies for overcoming mom guilt and provides a non-judgmental space to share and process your thoughts and emotions. There is no shame in seeking support from a therapist.

I
n shaping the future of our teens, too few students and parents take time to chart bold moves that have the potential to create future success. While academics are at the forefront of everyone’s mind, three other differentiators deserve equal attention: leading, volunteering, and working. These additional tips for shaping a teen’s future go beyond academics and instill personal responsibility, accountability, and a sense of purpose and drive. The bottom line is the most effective power moves are made by folks who have practiced power moves, so it’s important that our teens have opportunities to practice their

future power moves in low-risk and relatively consequence-free environments. The first opportunity is seeking leadership roles in extracurricular activities. High school students should actively participate in extracurricular activities and strive to become difference makers within the organizations. Whether it’s becoming the captain of a sports team, leading a club, or organizing events, taking on leadership positions encourages a teen’s growth in personal responsibility and accountability. In leadership roles, students learn to manage teams, make
decisions, navigate challenges, and communicate effectively, all of which are skills required for their futures. A second opportunity and game changer that is frequently, but sadly, just considered for meeting a graduation requirement or checking a box is volunteering. The goal of volunteering is to instill a lasting commitment to making a positive difference in the world in which you live. Volunteering consistently with the same organization allows for teens to experience the impact of their efforts. It also fosters a personal connection to the cause and their community. This experience of dedication, hard work, and commitment to foster community change will help shape the mindset of their futures. The third opportunity for teens to be bold and shape their futures is having a job during high
school. Beyond being a source of income, holding a job becomes a way to build and demonstrate personal accountability. From showing up on time to completing assigned tasks, a job is where students acquire valuable life skills that translate into real-world settings. Teens will navigate workplace dynamics, learn professional conduct and how to be a collaborative team member, and develop resilience in the face of challenges. This combination of holding leadership roles, volunteering, and having a job creates a powerful trio that supports, teaches, and demonstrates the significance of personal responsibility and accountability. They are growth yardsticks that, when met, allow students to boldly progress beyond the classroom, ready to meet the challenges of the next chapter in their lives (not to mention beefing up their resumes, too!)

By taking ownership of a word, you set an intention for how you want your year to unfold. At different times in our lives, we could all use some help rebalancing. The word you select should align with your purpose for the year ahead. Just the sound of it should make you feel energized. And remember that every season in our lives is different, so pick one that is right for where you are now. Two years ago, I chose the word “growth,” and I committed to saying yes to most things. Last year, however, my word was “pause,” guiding me to say no to most things. This year, I have chosen the word “impact.” The dictionary defines “impact” as “a strong effect on someone or something.” I hope this word will inspire all aspects of my life this year, including my family, friends, and the Kindness Circle, a community of good humans spreading kindness to others and ourselves. Since its inception in January 2021, we have proudly given midlife women a lane to share. THE “GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL” COMES TO
THE GREAT WHITE WAY By Caitlin Brightman

. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby has rightfully earned its title as the Great American Novel. Since its release 100 years ago, it has sold 30 million copies and continues to sell an additional 500,000 each year. Ten years ago, Baz Luhrmann brought it to the big screen in the iconic and star-studded film. So, it seems only fitting that Broadway brings the party onstage. The musical adaptation of The Great Gatsby made its world premiere at the famed Papermill Playhouse in New Jersey this past fall, breaking

the venue’s all-time record for ticket sales in a single day and selling out the run before the first performance. It received acclaim from The New York Times, which called the show “dazzling, lush, and bewitching.” The production team spared no cost, as displayed in the lavish sets and costumes, bringing Gatsby’s glamorous parties to life. The show will be led by Jeremy Jordan as Gatsby and Eva Noblezada as Daisy, both Tony Award nominees for their past work in the long-running hits Newsies and Hadestown, respectively.

The two stars light up when talking about the production and this adaptation. “It has to be a musical because the world of Gatsby is so grand,” says Eva Noblezada. Jeremy Jordan adds, “The opulence of those larger-than-life characters definitely lends itself to a massive stage production, which is what we’ve created with this show.” For both actors, bringing these iconic characters to life is a dream. Noblezada reminisces on her journey to the role: “When I got the material for my audition, I felt such a pull — I said, ‘I need to be a part of this show.’ I worked hard on the songs before I went in. My goal was to feel so much like Daisy that when the music started, I was there in her memories; I could smell her perfume. I felt so
Noblezada entered the spotlight at age 17 after being named a finalist in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards for starring in her high school’s production of Footloose. A Broadway producer spotted her talent at the awards ceremony and brought her in for an audition. She was cast as the leading role in a revival of Miss Saigon and left high school just months later to perform the role in London’s West End. Ten years later, her role in The Great Gatsby will be the third time she’s led a musical on Broadway. This time, she gets to do it alongside a Broadway legend she’s long admired: “I’ve been a fan of Jeremy’s for a long time- since I watched his YouTube videos in school. It’s so much fun to have watched and admired someone’s career and then be placed on stage together with him in this very specific world.” The Great Gatsby begins preview performances on March 29th. New York City is abuzz about this home-grown, extravagant tale returning to the brightest stage in the country.

ania Elizabeth has shaped the arc of modern-day roots music for two decades. From playing fiddle for the Avett Brothers, co-founding the Grammy-winning group The Duhks, serving as an accompanist for Mary Gauthier, and performing as a session player, Tania’s done it all. Most 15-year-olds are just trying to get through high school, but by then, Tania Elizabeth had already launched her own record label and completed her first solo album. At 16, she left school, completed a cross-country Canadian tour in partnership with Save The Children (a humanitarian organization dedicated to supporting victims of child trafficking), and recorded her second album. By the time she turned 18, she’d already performed her songs in venues across Australia and China. Looking for new horizons, Tania co-founded The Duhks, a genre-jumping roots band that released their debut album in 2003. The Duhks quickly became one of Canada’s most decorated folk acts, earning a Grammy nomination and a Juno Award during Tania’s tenure. She left the group’s lineup in 2010 and began performing with the celebrated folk singer Mary Gauthier. By 2013, she’d earned a permanent spot in the Avett Brothers’ touring lineup, contributing heavily to Grammy-nominated releases like “True Sadness” along the way. The bold beauty recently turned 40 and is excited about making more bold moves this year. “Life is opening up in so many new ways for me. I’m incredibly blessed; I have one of the best gigs a musician could ask for. This year, I’m celebrating ten years as a touring member of the Avett
Brothers. We have a beautiful year ahead of us, and I’ll be filling out our tour schedule with solo shows and using up some of my fundamental, irreplaceable life force to promote the release of my album, Storm Season, which has been in the works for some time now. I’m a Capricorn, so Pluto is leaving my sign after 15 years, and I am ready. I’m ready to take off like a rocket fueled by hard-won wisdom and love, and I’m ready to step into the power that comes when you stop buying into what other people might think while retaining compassion for their unique lived experiences. MARRIN COSTELLO By Marianne Pienias
B
old moves led me to write this article. Truth be known, I used to be an English teacher, but took the leap to follow my true passion, writingbold move number one. But before I left teaching, I told a coworker, Stephanie, about Ask Us Beauty, and unbeknownst to me, our magazine directed Stephanie to a boutique where she met none other than Marrin Costello! Stephanie introduced herself to Marrin and eventually connected us. (I’ve lost count, but lots of bold moves by several amazing women helped this story come full circle!) Speaking with Marrin was nothing short of inspiring. Growing up in California, Marrin showed signs of being a rising entrepreneur as early as seven, when she started creating and selling jewelry (uniquely packaged in Tupperware!) When asked, she attributed her success to her own inward commitment and determination coupled with her family’s neverending encouragement. However, she laughed and admitted that becoming a successful entrepreneur definitely requires a “special brand of crazy”- loved that! Marrin’s mantra is just like the Nike commercial slogan: “Just Do It!” She warns others not to let obstacles such as a recession or pandemic stop you. In fact, Marrin took her biggest leap of faith in 2021, in the midst of the Covid Pandemic. She uprooted from Los Angeles to Tampa and has never looked back. She describes Tampa as a city who gave her brand a “big, fat hug” on arrival and has never let go. So, congratulations, Marrin! She graduated from a one person show to a 14 “women-powered” team. And what makes Marrin’s story even more interesting is the fact that her business is not just about jewelry. Marrin carries a true commitment to giving back to the greater entrepreneurial community through her business and branding consulting firm, as well as the Marrin Costello Radio podcast, which focuses on highlighting the stories, lessons, and victories of impactful trailblazers and entrepreneurs alike. Her

wheels are definitely still churning and bold moves are definitely on the horizon. When asked her definition of beauty, Marrin’s answer was quite succinct and perfect: “Beauty is an authentic and true relationship with oneself that allows you to see the beauty in others.” Currently, Marrin’s bold moves have earned her jewelry collection a nomination for “Best Accessories” by Tampa Bay Magazine. From her horseshoe-style bracelets to her timeless lariat necklaces, Costello’s pieces can be described “as classic as a little black dress,” according to Stephanie. ame tags should be mandatory for everyone over the age of 40. Yeah, I said it — name tags. You know, the ones with bright red borders and a giant “HELLO, my name is” plastered on the front. Yes, those obnoxious name tags. “HELLO, my name is Jennifer.” See, that wasn’t so hard. Add a personal factoid to really stand out. “HELLO, my name is Jennifer. Loves Hummus.” That’s fun, right? It would make events and social gatherings so much more relaxed without the added task of having to remember names of people you’ve met dozens of times (or are related to), had dinner with, and gossiped about at the school fundraiser. Instead of guessing the name of the drunk lady on the dance floor, you’ll know for sure because of her name tag. With name tags, you can confidently state, “Yep, that’s Carol. She Loves Dirty Martinis.” So empowering! Besides loving hummus, I’m a mom, wife, comedian, actress, and a new Ask Us Beauty Magazine contributor. Six years ago, I left a highprofile consulting firm and a six-figure income to pursue my creative dreams. Realizing that time is finite, I adopted the attitude, “If not now, when?” which is now, subsequently, the working title for my upcoming book. The next day, I did my first open mic at a local pub. I bombed, but that didn’t stop me, and despite pandemics, strikes, and hecklers, I kept going. I guess my point is never give up on your dreams because you never know where they will take you.

But I digress. Back to nametags! I think everyone would appreciate the power of the nametag – even God. Can you imagine how hard it is for Him to keep everyone’s name straight? Skip the embarrassment of arriving at the Pearly Gates and having God forget your name or, worse, confuse you with someone else. You don’t want God thinking, “Now, is that Jennifer who loves hummus or Carol who loves dirty martinis?” No, you don’t want that. And God forbid (pun intended), God confuses you with a politician and sends you back down to the other gate. Name tags are eternal, but your memory is not. Now, if I could only find my keys…
CLOSING THOUGHTS As we draw the curtains on this issue, there is no time like the present to explore new opportunities. Stretching beyond our comfort zones and embracing fresh experiences remind us of our potential for growth, adaptation, and ability to draw invaluable lessons from our setbacks. Let us embrace the unfamiliar, for it is in navigating uncharted territories that we discover the potential within us. But, what about the fear factor? Fear, though daunting, is an inevitable part of life. It lurks in the shadows, whispering doubts and uncertainties, yet it is also the vessel from which greatness emerges. To truly live, we must dare to confront the scary stuff, to embrace the discomfort, and to push beyond the boundaries of our comfort zones. Here are three tips to help you confront your fears: 1. Acknowledge Your Fear: The first step towards conquering fear is acknowledging its presence. Instead of suppressing or ignoring it, acknowledge your fear and accept it as a natural part of the process. Recognize that fear is not a sign of weakness but an opportunity for growth. 2. Take Action: Fear thrives in the realm of uncertainty and inaction. The antidote? Take decisive action. Break down your fears into manageable steps and take one small action at a time. Whether it’s having that difficult conversation, pursuing a new opportunity, or confronting a personal challenge, action breeds courage. 3. Cultivate Resilience: Resilience is the armor that shields us from the blows of fear and adversity. Cultivate resilience by nurturing a growth mindset, practicing self-compassion, and surrounding yourself with a supportive community. Remember, setbacks are not defeats but opportunities to learn and grow stronger.
