EDITOR’S NOTE
WELCOME TO A&S SMAHOME It has been an exciting month for us. After months of feverish preparation, the first SMAhome International Conference and Exhibition launched in Taipei, Taiwan conjunction with the 2014 Secutech International Expo during March 19 to 21. While Secutech has attracted commercial security professionals around the world since 1998, the addition of SMAhome highlights the robust development of home security as well as smart home. Those who were there will agree that it was a remarkable debut. The conference, designed for smart home camera manufacturers, also raised many important questions. Speakers such as Skywatch's Wei-Chao Chen explained the critical role software plays in smart home and home security, inspiring us to explore a few more thoughts on the subject for this issue’s Exploration. I had some interesting conversations with some makers of intelligent cameras at the show site, too. Speaking about trends in camera development, it seems that allin-one cameras show a lot of potential. All-in-one cameras combine smart home gateway, movement sensors and thermometers into one unit, making it easier than ever for users to setup automation and security systems. This could never be done without the help of software. This is exactly the direction Jeffrey Wu, this month’s Cover Star, is pursuing with StarVedia, which he founded in 2007. To let buyers gain first-hand experience with some of the best home security cameras, at SMAhome Exhibition we organized the first Home Camera Demo Gallery. The event was meant to help International buyers’ source quality products and form partnerships with OEMs. Many home security cameras are made by players in the security space; they have extensive experience in B2B, but are still catching up when it comes to consumer products. Camera setup and operation was complicated and sometimes frustrating for many of the products I tested. When we later interviewed Russell Ure, who created Piper, I could not agree more with what he said–you have to design your systems for people who have no technical knowledge at all. The overwhelming consensus at the conference and exhibition is that we are still in the early days of smart home. Smart home is more than a fancy picture–it has the potential to provide tangible benefits that improve quality of life. Let’s hope we see more intelligent, innovative and, most of all, practical products that prove it.
Until our next issue,

"SOLUTION ON CAMERA (SOC) REQUIRES A HIGH DEGREE OF SOFTWARE INTEGRATION, BUT IT IS A GREAT RESOLUTION FOR US AS WELL AS USERS."
10 mySMAhome.com May/June 2014
When Jeffrey Wu stepped into the home camera industry, he immediately stood out among Taiwan makers. Coming from a telecommunications background, he uses his past experience to build cameras that combine ease-to-use and sophisticated integrated solutions—two essential factors to succeed in the smart home market.
SMART HOME SOLUTION ON A CAMERA Jeffrey Wu, President of StarVedia, has seen it through. As a relatively young player in the home camera market, StarVedia has to maintain competitiveness through innovation. After the exiting VoIP phone system business, Wu has been leading the company in redefining itself as a new entry in the booming smart home industry. Since 2007, StarVedia has been designing and manufacturing network cameras specifically targeting residential users. So far, StarVedia has been focusing on OEM and ODM services. StarVedia prides itself as a one-stop shop for buyers looking for a complete solution. “We provide the back-end infrastructure, the front-end GUI, and everything in between for our OEM and ODM customers,” Wu said. “My background in telecommunication has taught me two things: the networking know-how require to make reliable IP-based systems and the realization that ease of use is critical. When we started our home camera business, I knew our cameras had to be plugand-play,” Wu said. “That is always one of the things at the very top of our list. Creating cameras that can be easily installed and operated without any technical knowledge is our mission, and it has proven to be a main differentiator for us in the market.” Although the home cameras market is
quite a crowded space, it is not quite mature yet in terms of delivering products for nontechnical users. Most users still struggle to understand poorly written user manuals and confusing UIs. “All StarVedia cameras support Wi-Fi, which in and of itself is nothing special. The beauty of it is that setup is truly plug-and-play. You don’t need a computer to configure the camera—all you need is a smartphone or tablet.”
SOFTWARE TROOP Most camera makers in Taiwan are heavily hardware-oriented, but StarVedia is taking a different approach. “We are actually a software-savvy troop. We know how to design the software and efficiently integrate it with the hardware to achieve true plugand-play, Wu said. “All of our software is developed in-house. We have extensive experience developing software for various operating systems, such as iOS, Android, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows and others, and mobile is in our culture.” The ubiquity of smartphones is a major driver for the home camera market. “We began developing software for mobile devices since Symbian was the dominant platform,” Wu said with a smile. “In a way, I am happy the battle between mobile platforms has left us with just two: Android and iOS.

Our engineering team can focus on the apps and improve user experience, rather than spending significant time and resources on adapting and adjusting our software for numerous platforms.” Wu further defined what he thinks it means to be “software-savvy.” It requires a deep understanding of networking technologies and integration knowhow. Wu used StarVedia’s peer-to-peer video streaming technology as an example: “the video stream does not pass through any servers, so it reduces latency compared to other approaches, and end-users do not have to worry about the servers being hacked.” Cloud storage is another front Wu is proud of. He thinks Dropbox is probably one the best solution at this time: “It is flexible, mature and featurerich. Dropbox supports most platforms, including PCs and most smartphones and tablets. Its pricing ranges from free to cheap. It offers automatic backups, instant file sharing, robust permission settings, integration with a whole ecosystem of third-party apps and much more," Wu said. "Many people already use Dropbox in their daily workflow. Rather than reinvent the wheel, we wanted to use these advantages of Dropbox to enhance our cameras.” Dropbox support is now
12 mySMAhome.com May/June 2014
built into every Starvedia camera that offers a private cloud-based DVR solution, which turns the camera into a complete home security system with no additional recording hardware needed. During his six years in smart home cameras, Wu has come to realize that interoperability is just as important as user-friendliness when it comes to home users. StarVedia’s proprietary system and software is based on industry-standard communication protocols to avoid interoperability problems. Moving forward, StarVedia plans to offer cameras that support Z-Wave, which has an ecosystem of products that aligns with the company’s goal to create the “easiest smart home products”.
DUAL POWER In addition to making reliable and easy-to-use software, StarVedia’s innovative culture also manifests in its hardware. “Video performance and image quality are highly dependent on the processor used in the camera, but there are other ways to enhance a camera’s performance besides choosing the most powerful chip,” Wu said. One feature Wu is especially proud of is that all StarVedia cameras have two “eyes.” According to Wu, StarVedia is the only home camera maker that offers
IC711W CAMERA • Plug & Play by ID/password, no IP address or DNS settings • H.264 video compression • Megpixel, 1280x800 resolution at 30 fps • Dual lens for day and night separately • Two way audio with internal speaker • SD card slot with 5 seconds of video pre-recording • 802.11 n wireless with WPS support • Connect up to 20 users simultaneously • Bundle with free video management software CamView • Push notification on iPhone/iPad and Android for sound and motion detection • Video recording on NAS device
dual-lens cameras. “Many buyers are curious about the purpose of this design. It’s not a gimmick—the dual-lens design helps overcome flaws inherent to mechanical IR-cut filters,” Wu continued. “The wavelength of daylight and night-time infrared condition requires different focuses for clear video. The additional lens provides functionality similar to an IR-cut filter, but increases stability and durability. It also helps to make the camera more compact, since lenses with ICR function usually require larger space in the camera.” Wu also wants to focus on developing products that provide features that can impact users’ lives in a positive way. A new product in the pipeline is a camera equipped with an infrared thermometer and speakers. “You can monitor the temperature of the environment and ask the babysitter to turn on or off the air conditioner through the built-in speaker. You can also configure the camera to trigger an alarm when the temperature falls out of a specified range.” Speaking of application-driven designs, Wu explained: “We pay a lot of attention on the details to maximize a product’s value and performance. For example, our cameras are built with Wi-Fi directly onboard. We do not use a module, instead embedding the Wi-Fi chip and antenna on the camera board itself so that we can make our products more compact and easier to integrate while controlling costs more efficiently.” Scheduled to launch in June, the IC711 series is a new lineup featuring a smaller size and more functions.
MARKET SENSITIVITY StarVedia’s customer base is primarily in Japan, the U.S and South East Asia. Wu sees huge potential in the smart home market, which is strongest is the U.S., but has also picked up significantly this year in Europe and China. On a smaller scale, StarVedia products are also distributed all over Asia and Europe, mainly in Germany and France. Market conditions in China are different, however—Wu thinks the company is better off marketing its own brand there, and has done

so through a subsidiary. With rich cooperation experience with branded customers who usually sell products in various retail channels, Wu knows which checkboxes to tick in different geographical markets. For example, in Japan, product quality and reliability are two must-have factors to take into consideration in choosing manufacturing partners. Wu also points out the differences between the European and the US markets for network cameras. The US market is price-sensitive, but tends to accept new products and May/June 2014 mySMAhome.com 13
COVER STORY
solutions. The U.S. is the first market to promote on a large scale smart home applications and related protocols, including Z-Wave and ZigBee. He sees Europe as a different market. European retailers are more brand-oriented, and emphasize on brand management. Wu said European retailers are used to enhancing value and consumer loyalty through brand power. Retailers have different concerns compared to commercial security system integrators and distributers. “Retailers care about products that are easy to use, have low return rates, offer a stunning user experience, and distinct features that sets it apart from an ocean of me-too products,” said Wu. Equipped with expertise and experience in software development and system integration, StarVedia is one of the few companies working directly with telcos in China and Japan. The company sees cooperating with telcos as a major way to expand the smart home market. Wu thinks Asia is a promising area, especially Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.
SMART HOME SOLUTIONS ON A CAMERA (SOC) Looking ahead, Wu sees three trends for smart home devices: more integration, wireless deployment and affordable pricing. He has clear plans for riding these waves. “Putting an infrared thermometer inside the camera is just the beginning. After that, we’ll have a single unit that integrates video recorder, audio speaker, thermostat and PIR body sensor. Eventually, we will offer cameras that serve as an all-in-one smart home gateway, using Z-Wave to extend our current home security offerings to include other smart home features.” This platform—a smart home solution on a camera (SoC), as Wu calls it—“requires a high degree of software integration, but it is a great resolution for us as well as users. They do not need to purchase various devices and endure complicated installation
14 mySMAhome.com May/June 2014
services. For instance, the PIR sensor enables accurate intrusion detection, which can trigger a push notification to notify police and homeowners if necessary, negating the need for a separate sensor in the home.” The camera itself becomes a complete smart home solution.

Foster better energy consumption habits through gamification.
The ultimate appeal of a smart home is the anticipation that one day we will have systems in our homes that have the intelligence to understand and predict our behavior, and adjust the environment to the users preferences, which it learns autonomously. This level of automation is currently impossible to do mechanically, making software the only viable option. Moreover, the days have long gone where a user has to fiddle with dozens of buttons to operate a system—in its place, we now have touch screens and tablets with adaptive and programmable user interfaces. By Gary Tang
In 1982, Alan Kay, a computer pioneer, said in a talk: “People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware.” Some companies have found huge success in this approach, such as Apple. Microsoft is also moving in this direction with its Surface tablets and its acquisition of Nokia’s mobile phone division. However, it is easier said than done. “Hardware can mean so many things—processor, board, system plus accessories. To build an ecosystem, it can be very expensive and time-consuming, and it is certainly better to take a more evolutionary route, to bootstrap, leverage and to stand on the shoulders of giants,” said Wei-Chao Chen, co-founder of Skywatch. “Software improvements beget hardware changes, and vice versa. I think we are at the onset of smart home services, and software is the primary limiting factor where the battles would be carried out.” Nick Evans, CEO of Tile, thinks it is worth it. In a talk at the 2014 International CES, Evan says: “It’s very challenging to develop a product like [Tile], but at the end of the day, you have your teams working very closely together. If you can’t do this mechanically, we’ll figure out a way to do this in software; in software if that’s going to be kind of clunky to set it up, we’ll put a button on [the device]. We’ll make the button very hard to see on the Tile, but it’s actually still there. “This is the direction everything’s going: to not have everything so modular, to not throw stuff over the fence and have this integration. It’s the only way you can really build fantastic, magical products that just work. It’s definitely worth it at the end of the day,” Evans added.
I THINK WE ARE AT THE ONSET OF SMART HOME SERVICES, AND SOFTWARE IS THE PRIMARY LIMITING FACTOR WHERE THE BATTLES WOULD BE CARRIED OUT.”
TOUCH PANEL VS. SMARTPHONE APP It was only a few years ago that integrators and end users needed a dedicated touch panel to control home automation systems. Apple’s introduction of the iPad and the subsequent explosion of tablets has made it much more affordable to add a touch screen panel to a home automation system. They are also much more convenient due to their support for general purpose computing and multitasking capabilities. However, users have also come to expect certain standards when it comes to user interfaces. In terms of user experience, a good user experience goes beyond UI design. It encompasses hardware functionality and pleasing aesthetics to allow users to take full advantage of their devices in a May/June 2014 mySMAhome.com 19
EXPLORATION

satisfactory way. While gimmicks and eyecatching designs may attract users at first, it is not enough to retain customers. “Good UI/UX is important for customer retention, and to attract customer attention. Good UI/UX can also reduce RMA and customer support loading. In short, very important. I don’t think manufacturers are getting them wrong, just that they are not evolving quickly enough,” Chen said. “The only way to nail down UI/UX issues, we think, is to go directly to the consumers. Crowdfunded startups seem to be doing fairly well in particular because the successful ones learn to present their products in a consumer-friendly way, an essential factor in order to achieve successful funding threshold.” “In terms of interoperability, for end users, an open API is often not relevant as long as the whole solution works well together. This means either a system integrator or a solution provider needs to create a workable solution for the customers. We see that it has become increasingly difficult for system integrators to provide such solutions because of technical complexities and UX considerations,” Chen continued. “That is why we think MVaaS or companies that can facilitate and package these solutions as products have higher values going forward. My view is, if you are providing solutions, an open API is often not necessary. On the other hand, for component suppliers (such as camera vendors), open APIs are usually unavoidable.” 20 mySMAhome.com May/June 2014
REACHING FOR THE CLOUD
"THE ONLY WAY TO NAIL DOWN UI/UX ISSUES, WE THINK, IS TO GO DIRECTLY TO THE CONSUMERS. CROWDFUNDED STARTUPS SEEM TO BE DOING FAIRLY WELL IN PARTICULAR BECAUSE THE SUCCESSFUL ONES LEARN TO PRESENT THEIR PRODUCTS IN A CONSUMERFRIENDLY WAY."
There are obvious benefits to hooking up appliances to the Internet. An air purifier can pull data from the internet to inform users of what to wear and if they should worry about certain pollutants. Utilities can monitor energy and water usage to operate more efficiently. Users can control their appliances from wherever they are. Device makers can push updates to offer users new features. Limitless possibilities arise when connecting a home appliance to a vast jungle of data and information and also to other users. For example, home security cameras benefit greatly from the ubiquitous connectivity and smartphones of today. The problem with traditional security cameras, both CCTV and network cameras, is that local storage is easily tampered with if the intruder knows where to look. Whether images are stored in an SD card on the camera or a hidden NVR or NAS, the intruder has the opportunity to destroy evidence. There are many cases where security footage was not able to assist in solving the crime because the intruder had already removed or formatted the hard drive or SD card, as is often the case for inside jobs, said David Lim, CTO of Weltin Global. Having off-site backups is best practice for any type of data, but that option may be too much trouble or too expensive for some users. That is why cloud-enabled home security products are so attractive. In terms of security, all images are stored

"USERS ARE THE WEAKEST LINK IN SECURITY."
safely in the cloud, so users do not have to worry about missing critical moments due to hardware failure or tampering. Users can also view live video via apps on PC or mobile devices. The dropping prices of cloud computing platforms provided by the likes of Amazon, Google and Microsoft has made it much easier for camera makers to offer users the option to backup security footage to the cloud, Lim said. Weltin builds its cloud services on top of the infrastructure of IBM and Google, which removes a huge burden in terms of up-front investment, as well as security and reliability. “I see more pros than cons by using IaaS services to deploy cloud video services. It allows us to go to many markets faster than building our own infrastructure, and is therefore more cost efficient for fragmented markets in particular,” Chen said. “It could be marginally more expensive at scale, but at that point there is no real trouble switching to IDC or co-located solutions. There is no differences in terms of data security between using IDCs and IaaS solutions.”
CONNECTIVITY RAISES SECURITY CONCERNS As the number of connect devices in the home increase, and as they replace “dumb” devices that play a critical role in home safety and security, the security of these devices has become a pressing issue. The Edward Snowden revelations significantly grew awareness of government spying and issues regarding privacy in the digital age, but the problems go much deeper. Criminals and other parties with malicious intent now have
a much wider playground with the multitude of connected devices. This was not a big deal before now, but the number of devices and the role they play in a home has increased the threat level exponentially. And it is only going to get worse. “Users demand the functionality. Users increasingly want more control over their devices, so turning traditional hardware appliances into IoT ones becomes a market trend,” said Frank Tse, researcher at Nexusguard. “Users also demand fast response and live data, which requires adding internet connection and turn the device into an always-on Internet client.” Proofpoint, a security solution provider, found earlier this year that cyber criminals were using household IoT devices— including home-networking routers, connected multi-media centers, televisions and at least one refrigerator—to launch attacks. Belkin’s WeMo line of smart home products were revealed to have vulnerabilities that left 500,000 users at risk. In March, researchers found that more than 300,000 routers were compromised by malware that modified DNS settings. The recent Heartbleed bug that affects some versions of OpenSSL defeats encryption. Just this month, Sans Institute researchers infected video surveillance DVRs with Bitcoinmining malware. “Bot-nets are already a major security concern and the emergence of thingbots may make the situation much worse,” David Knight, General Manager of Proofpoint’s Information Security division said in a statement. “Many of these devices are poorly protected at best and consumers have virtually no May/June 2014 mySMAhome.com 21

way to detect or fix infections when they do occur. Enterprises may find distributed attacks increasing as more and more of these devices come online and attackers find additional ways to exploit them.” Networking appliances and other devices is an old concept, but has not been implemented on a massive scale until recent years. Since security is often not a priority in the product development process, manufacturers are content running older versions of software, which may have known vulnerabilities or have weak security. Users, however, are also at fault. “The security of smart home devices has so far been based on trusting manufactures, but users are the weakest link in security.” He recommends users to at least change the default passwords, turn off features they don’t need, and configure their home router’s firewall to allow access from trusted sources only. Asked if it is good enough to rely on the goodwill of manufacturers to make more secure devices, Tse’s response was blunt: “Never.” Whether it is due to a lack of understanding the risks, a lack of resources to implement adequate security, or sheer laziness, device makers clearly need to step up their game. “Manufacturers are recommended to turn off web-enabled features by default for some types of devices, such as refrigerators and air conditioners. This will make users aware they are turning on one feature of that device and the risks it may entail,” Tse said. “Manufactures are also recommended to do data classification and implement necessary countermeasures, such as encrypting data and storing it on servers rather than locally.”
USABILITY IS KEY Generally, consumers choose products that have an advantage in price, design, and usability, in this order, Chen said. “Usability comes later, and as it is the viral factor, I think it is ultimately the most important factor. To this end, price needs to go down to a certain level before mass market adoption, but the cheapest products almost never win, unless they have become obvious commodities.” Consumers are very cost sensitive, but a good design turns the game around, he added.

TALK
I WOULDN’T WANT MY HOME TO BE CONTROLLED BY CLOUD INTELLIGENCE.
Russell Ure, Creator of Piper, and EVP and GM of iControl Canada
Piper recently got updated with a couple new features. We had the opportunity to talk briefly with Russell Ure, founder of Blacksumac, which created Piper. Blacksumac was recently acquired by iControl Networks. Ure is currently EVP and GM of iControl Canada.
Were the features already on the roadmap or were they requested by users? The two-way audio was planned from the beginning, while the multi-Piper support came about from feedback from Indiegogo backers.
Can you tell me some more about the multi-Piper support? The new feature supports up to five Pipers on a single network. Each Piper is a full security system and a smart home system that includes a camera, motion detector and microphone. Piper also lets you create different rules–for example, you could set a rule that states: “if motion is detected, record video and set the siren.” When you have multiple Pipers in your home, each Piper will be running the rules on their own units, as they can interact through Wi-Fi. The system can share knowledge about detection of events between the different Pipers, so when one Piper detects motion, it can set the siren off on all other Pipers in response to that, showing how all units work together as a team.
In terms of hardware, isn’t that kind of redundant? Why not have separate components that the user can install in different places as they see fit? We did look at that. However, from a manufacturing and a time-tomarket standpoint, there wouldn’t have been a great deal saved by doing that. We also looked at the specific use cases of Piper. For instance, if someone comes into your home, we want each piper to operate as a 26 mySMAhome.com May/June 2014
"ONCE YOU START TALKING TO PEOPLE ABOUT WHAT THEY NEED, HAVING IT ALL TOGETHER IN ONE UNIT MAKES A LOT OF SENSE." security system by itself and trigger the other two. Once you start looking at all the features and all the use cases of Piper, most features are best when combined in the unit.
Can you tell me a bit more about the two-way audio and how that works? When you have multiple Pipers, you have multiple live camera views to choose from—there’s a microphone button that you press and hold to talk to whoever is in the room. When you let go of the button, you can hear what they’re saying, so it’s like an intercom, but with a camera. The audio is very clear, so it’s possible to have a lengthy conversation with somebody in the room. All you have to do is talk to them and pause to give them time to respond.
Can you share any other features you have on the roadmap right now? All I can say is that every four to five weeks, we’ll be releasing new features to our entire user base. We have some very exciting features in the pipeline.
Do you have a vision of what a smart home is? I think there has to be a central controller inside the home. Our vision is that home management and home control will be managed locally in the home with a unit like Piper. It will increasingly become more intelligent and support all kinds of different capabilities. Piper is a full computer that runs independently without the cloud. It makes decisions, processes things and recognizes situations all locally. Even when you connect to the live camera view, you’re connecting peer-to-peer through a secure mobile connection to the Piper unit, not a cloud server. I wouldn’t want my home to be basically controlled by some cloud intelligence, where something in the cloud is figuring out what I’m doing and where my family is, and then make decisions about what should be done in the home. I think increasingly people will be uncomfortable with that, and they should be. But, that kind of automation is May/June 2014 mySMAhome.com 27
TALK
I am continuing to work with my same team and we will continue to push ahead on our product roadmap. We are looking forward to enhancing Piper with some exciting features that wouldn't have previously been available to us.
And those features you mentioned, you can’t talk about them just yet? Unfortunately, no.
In what countries has Piper been most successful?
increasingly important, and having that automation done locally inside the home is definitely the future.
So Piper works even when an Internet connection is not present, and the cloud is used only for storing images and video, and sending push notifications? Yes.
There are a lot of systems on the market that allow users to control home appliances from a smartphone, but does not offer any type of automation. In your opinion, is that still a smart home system? In my opinion, what we’re really going through now is the development of the ultimate smart home system, and we’re doing it in stages. People can control things like turning on or off lights from a mobile device and you can also turn appliances on or off or control the heating inside your home. These are examples of steps along the future smart home path. Ultimately, we all want something like in Star Trek: when you go into the home, there’s something in that home that is going to anticipate what you want. When you come into or leave a room, the light immediately changes and that system understands your preferences. There’re a lot of things that can be done with automation over time, but we’re still in the early stages and we'll continue to see the smart home unfold over the next few years.
How does the acquisition by iControl Networks affect the Blacksumac team and Piper’s development? I run the Piper team and serve as Executive Vice President and General Manager at iControl Canada. 28 mySMAhome.com May/June 2014
Our main focus right now is North America, where we are selling Piper. But, we have Piper deployments around the world—not quite sure how they got to the various countries, but people find a way. We plan to start selling full blast in Europe shortly, and the rest of the world soon afterwards. I think Piper will be popular with customers in Europe and also in Asia because many people live in smaller spaces.Monitored security is not as common in these areas as it is in North America, so I believe there is huge opportunity for Piper as well.
Right now only the North American version on the market? Correct. We have several European versions that are in the final stages of certification and testing, and then we’ll be ready to start selling in Europe.
Do home automation, smart home and connected home mean different things to you, or are they the same? To me, they all mean the same thing. In order to have a smart home, you need
"YOU HAVE TO DESIGN YOUR SYSTEMS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AT ALL."
automation, otherwise it’s not very smart. And to enable automation, you need connection, so these terms are all the same, in my opinion
What inspired you to create Piper? The inspiration for Piper came from my daughter, who was going to school in a different city. She was living in an apartment, and I was worried about her. I realized I couldn’t get a security system installed in her apartment because every security system has to be professionally installed. When I looked around, there was just nothing I could buy her that would give her what she needed. That was really the start for me. There are a lot of people who need a home security solution and can't get it for their apartments.
How does she like it? My daughter loves using Piper! She and her roommate are much happier having it in their apartment.
Why not just buy a home security camera? There are a lot of them available that offer remote monitoring. Why did you want an entire security system in one unit? Piper was built for people who would install it themselves, rather than by a professional installer. Also, when you look at smart home, camera technology and security systems, they share so many parts together. I asked my daughter and a lot of her friends who had apartments: “What
worries you the most?” They said they were most afraid that someone could come into the apartment while they were sleeping. I then asked them what they would want to happen if someone did come in. They wanted the lights to turn on, which is an example of how security and smart home features are combined. They also want to make sure that no one would be in their apartments when they get home at night, and they wanted the lights to go on and have access to a camera view of their apartment. Once you start talking to people about what they need, having all of these features together in one unit makes a lot of sense.
A lot of Asian manufacturers in the security industry are beginning to develop smart home systems. They do not have that much experience designing products for consumers, so the UI tends to be less attractive and difficult to navigate. Do you think the UI is important for consumers? Absolutely. You have to design your systems for people who have no technical knowledge at all. That is our main design focus: if you can design a UI that helps them, chances are you’ve designed something that most people can use easily.
Should products primarily be easy to use or visually attractive? I think products need to have both qualities. If you’re putting Piper in your home, it has to look good. It can’t be something that looks out of place. You want to have it in a place of honor, as opposed to hiding it somewhere because you don’t want to look at it. Some people believe that because it’s a security system, you should be hiding it, but I don’t agree with that. Also, security is not just about intruders— if you’re at work and your children come home, you want to check what they’re doing, so you want a camera that has a good view of the place, and something that looks good and fits in with all the rest of your home.

As recent as a decade ago, the smart home market was largely reserved for the highend luxury home market. Today, smart home solutions are no longer necessarily cost-prohibitive, making it accessible to lower- to middle-income households. In addition, the prevalence of smartphones and tablets make smart home systems more attractive to users, as they become more accustomed to managing different aspects of their daily life with mobile devices. In European countries, there is a high demand for home energy management (HEM) systems, which is driving demand for smart home systems in the region. For the large part, Europeans seem to be more interested in energy management capabilities than security, comfort or convenience. By Gary Tang
CEBIT 2014 REVIEW: ENERGY MANAGEMENT DRIVING GROWTH IN EUROPE’S SMART HOME MARKET Rising electricity costs, as well as regulations and awareness of global warming, are driving adoption for smart home systems in Europe. Although almost all of the market is dominated by highend systems in luxury homes, the lower barrier to entry for smart home systems is increasing penetration in the lower and middle and segments of the market. Compared to the US smart home market, which is more price-sensitive, the EU market is more demanding of function and design; in terms of UI, the US champions user-friendliness (the less taps to a function, the better); the EU market demands more elegant designs, according to Virginia Ip, Marketing Executive at Fody.
"ACCORDING TO BSRIA, GERMANY ACCOUNTS FOR ROUGHLY 45 PERCENT OF THE EUROPEAN SMART HOME MARKET. "
BrightOn CMO Ana Cristina Agüero says the US smart home market is more mature. Customers are willing to pay more, and they are more open about storing personal data in the cloud. In terms of use cases, US consumers want automaion features primarily for convenience and comfort, while Europeans are more concerned about energy saving for environmental responsibility and lower energy costs. She also says that the demands of the German market represent the European market in general, since it is the biggest market in Europe for consumer electronics. According to BSRIA, Germany accounts for roughly 45 percent of the European smart home market, followed by France and the U.K. at 10 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Europe’s smart home market is expected to grow to about $0.6 billion by 2014, with mid-range systems contributing to the growth. Luxury homes account for most of the smart home market, but roughly 20 percent is attributed to light commercial applications, which sees residential solutions May/June 2014 mySMAhome.com 31

installed in commercial buildings. The German market will be $416 million by 2015, which is around 50 percent of Europe’s smart home market. It is currently dominated by electrical installers. KNX holds 70 percent of Germany’s smart home market, due to the fact that three out of four installations are light commercial applications. However, demand in the residential sector is rising, as Germany’s transition to renewable energy and phasing out of nuclear power has driven up the cost of electricity, which is now the second highest in Europe. Homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to save on electricity bills. Germans seem to prefer German products, as 70 percent of smart home products used are made by german manufacturers like Hager, Gira and Siemens. The French market offers a high potential for the smart home market; BSRIA expects the market to grow to $110 million by 2015—a CAGR of 17

percent. The Réglementation Thermique 2012 (RT 2012), which came into effect in 2013 requires new buildings to be three times more energy efficient than previous standards. Most smart home systems are installed in luxury homes, but this is expected to change as new and existing players introduce more midrange systems. The UK market smart home market is dominated by luxury homes, accounting for 80 percent of the market. Perhaps this is why AV and lighting systems in the U.K. are stronger drivers than energy management systems. Furthermore, since many luxury homes in London are left unoccupied most of the time, users also need security systems with remote monitoring capabilities. The UK market is expected to grow to $70 million by 2015. In Europe, the value of system integration is actually higher than the products. As mid-range systems are largely designed to be standardized
and easier to install, the role of system integrators will diminish as users no longer need their services. Users can install and configure the systems on their own, or look for an electrical installer to do it for them.
UTILITIES AND TELCOS PUSHING SMART HOME SERVICES Europe and North America are the biggest adopters of smart meters, which gives utility companies the opportunity to offer more divers services to their customers. According to Lux Research, HEM systems is becoming the next frontier for utilities—not only do they drive energy savings from 1.5 to 40 percent, it allows the utilities to enhance customer engagement, differentiate from competitors and more. HEM systems can expand to encompass a broader range of smart home features, which may result in utility companies playing an increasingly pivotal role in the development of

Europe’s smart home market. Lux research estimates that total revenue for utility companies in Europe is roughly $265 billion—they need only to invest less than one percent of it HEM systems to engage with customers via inhome touchscreen panels or mobile apps. Z-Wave Europe says that utilities are a high-growth segment of the market. Telecommunication companies like Deutsche Telekom are also highly interested in this space. Telcos invest a great deal to build their infrastructure and already have a large user base used to subscription-based services. In an Interview with IP&TV News, Jürgen Hase, VP of Deutsche Telekom’s M2M Competence Center, said that he anticipates a number of changes for the German smart home market over the next few years, including the emergence of new service-based models. “We expect four key segments in the smart home market to account for 89% of the market: home automation (40 percent), smart energy (20 percent), ambient assisted living and digital health care (15 percent), and self monitoring and control (10 percent), Jürgen said. He also points out that cooperation will be critical in the smart home market, saying: “We expect to see a fragmented supplier structure: no single player will cover all smart home segments. Cooperation will be key to success.”
SMARTPHONE A GAME CHANGER FOR SMART HOME SYSTEMS Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets have helped drive acceptance of smart home products and services. According to a recent study by The NDP group, 88 percent of mobile device owners are aware of smart home devices compared to the overall average, which is 78 percent. Furthermore, consumers who
own an Internet-connected smart home product, 81 percent own a smartphone or tablet. In a prepared statement, The NPD Group executive director and industry analyst Ben Arnold said: “Mobile connectivity has enabled products from programmable thermostats to home security systems, to be controlled remotely, thus increasing their appeal and utility.” “Another key part to this growing industry is the app ecosystem which allows consumers to use one device to monitor and control multiple products,” Ardold continued. Smart home products have not yet seen mass adoption, but they are attracting more interest among consumers, especially those who own smartphones or tablets. Among the surveyed consumers, 62 percent of smartphone or tablet owners said they were “extremely or somewhat interested” in purchasing smart home products, while the overall average was 48 percent. The report also points out a shift in the smart home market, whereas the increased mobility and accessibility is changing the consumer profile for smart home devices–37 percent of smart home product owners have a household income of less than $75,000, and 25 percent of this group rent their primary residence.
CONCLUSION The explosion of smart home devices, systems and services in 2014 is a culmination of maturing technologies, environment-friendly regulations and the ubiquity of mobile devices. However, the strongest growth will be seen in the mid- to low-end range of the market. Smart home systems have been around for decades, but only now has it become accessible to a less affluent audience. Take Z-Wave’s wireless protocol: Fibar Group’s Karolina Zagozdon says its system is around 5 times less expensive than KNX systems. Modular systems that allow users to add support for different protocols will also see strong demand as competition between different standards elevate, said Sebastian Popovic, CEO of Zipato.

Digitalstrom’s home automation system connects all electrical appliances in a home with modules that can be retrofited into a home without complicated installations. Moreover, the modules communicate with the Digitalstrom Meter, which measures power consumption for and receives signals from each module and delegates commands accordingly. A user can control the appliances in an entire room with a single light switch, according to the number or duration of taps. The Digitalstrom Server is another module that sits alongside the Digitalstrom Meter in a home’s fusebox. It connects the Digitalstrom system to a user’s home network and the Internet, enabling the configuration of automation rules via a web app and remote controlling via smartphone apps. Users can also extend the functionality of the Digitalstrom system by installing apps on the Digitalstrom Server, including the ability to create complicated scenes that can be activated by tapping a light switch—any light switch—a user-defined number of times. It also enables interaction with cloud services like Google Now.

ASIA, A SOURCING HUB FOR SMART HOME CAMERAS Asia is the largest manufacturing base of home security cameras and surveillance kits, with hundreds of competing suppliers. For these suppliers, the major export markets for smart home security cameras and surveillance kits are areas with well-developed network infrastructures, such as Europe and the U.S. By Weili Lin
Asian suppliers at the SMAhome International Conference & Exhibition 2014 (powered by Secutech) are primarily traditional surveillance, telecommunication and multimedia companies. For them, it is a new business opportunities. However, it is a whole new market, with different priorities and demands. Therefore, no player in each industry has an extreme advantage. The smart home market is new for the surveillance industry in terms of applications and user experiences. From the interviews, no killer application is mentioned so far. Not all surveillance companies are enthusiastic about this market. Nevertheless, some companies plan to enter the smart home market with DIY offerings and a new brand for their smart home product lineup. Home security cameras require network connectivity and easy-touse software in addition to reliable hardware. The telecommunicationsbased companies like Sercomm, Zinwell and Senao Networks boast their strong cloud services or high Quality of Service (QoS) for networks. As for 40 mySMAhome.com May/June 2014
the companies who are experts in audio and video processing, like DXG, Compro and PiXORD, they aim for high-quality images through IC, digital image processing and optical designs as their core competencies. Those companies are strong competitors to traditional surveillance companies in the smart home market. As for brandcentric companies, foreign companies like Bosch, Axis and ADT may be their greatest competitors. We explore export markets, business models, sales channels, and major applications along with major product features we’ve seen at SMAhome 2014. (See more event details on Page 63)
US LEADS THE MARKET North America is still the largest export market for Asian manufacturers, followed by Europe. Market acceptance, mature network infrastructure and consumer affordability are three major factors to boost the market. For some interviewees, more than 50 percent of sales revenue is contributed by the US market. In the U.S., the DIY market is booming. Alan Chang, Vice President of International Sales & Marketing Dept of DXG, whose major export markets include Europe and North America, thinks that the ubiquity of smartphones and proliferation of 4G network are two

driving forces of the market. Wi l l i a m K u , Vi c e P re s i d e n t o f International Business Div. of Vivotek mentioned that TV and door are two key areas for the smart home market. Russia, Brazil and Southeast Asia are viewed as three export markets with a lot of potential. Emerging countries are considered to be the next promising areas. Russia and Brazil are said to be two fast-growing regions over the next two to three years. The improved network infrastructure, strong buying power, and conversion from analog signals to digital are three major factors. "Russia is a potential market due to its high consumption capability," said Bruce
Wang, Marketing Manager of Compro. China is another promising area, but will likely see less growth compared to the above-mentioned regions, some exhibitors said. In China, India and the Middle East, home security still caters to the high-end market. As for India, wealth inequality and low profit from channels can be two reasons that make foreign suppliers reluctant to enter the market.

label businesses are major types for manufacturers of electronics products. For home security cameras and surveillance kits, OEM and ODM are two major business types. A few companies emphasize on ownbrand business. For example, 3S PocketNet emphasizes its own-brand business, selling its network cameras and bundled software to end users and SIs. With strong design and manufacturing capabilities, Asian suppliers work with SIs and distributors via private label business for global project cases. Of course, there are also companies that offer only OEM and ODM services, like Sercomm and Zinwell. To stay competitive, some Asian suppliers strengthen their vertical integration capability via in-house design capability or upstream subsidiaries. For instance, Vatics, a spin-off from the SoC solutions department of Vivotek, offers SoC for network cameras. PiXORD, a subsidiary of ELAN Microelectronics, prides itself on image processing from the side of IC design. Due to geographical differences and consumer behaviors, ownbrand products are distributed via distributors or companies’ local branch offices. Some companies of professional surveillance products offer smart home products under new brands—for example, Hikvision thinks this is a better approach because it sees the smart home market as a new market, rather than an extension of traditional surveillance. The company released smart h o m e re l a t e d p ro d u c t s and solutions under the its EZVIZ brand so that consumers can differentiate its smart home business from its professional surveillance segment.
MAJOR CHANNELS When it comes to product distribution, online and retail stores are two major sales channels of branded products for the DIY market, especially in North America and Europe. For DIY users, online stores are important channels due to the convenience of direct ordering. In the U.S., there is a large market of DIY consumers who prefer to shop online or at retail stores. Distributors are important to enter the European market. Own-brand products from Asian manufacturers are mostly sold to European online shops and retailers through distributors. The distributors are also important for Asian makers to enter the South American market. Dylan Tseng, Senior Sales Manager of Sales Center Business Unit of Pixord stated that the company entered the Brazil market through partnerships with local distributors. As for manufacturers, home security cameras are distributed all over the world primarily by branded companies, SIs, telcos and distributors. Most of the manufacturers rely on SIs, value-added resellers (VAR), dealers and distributors to distribute products overseas. Allan Chien, Associate Vice President of Branding Business Dept of Senao Networks said VARs could be major partners. Telcos like AT&T, SFR, Qivicon and Verizon offer home monitoring and control, as well as home security and automation services. Offering home surveillance services with free or rented network cameras is one of the approaches for telcos to spur market growth. Apart from European and US telcos, there are also opportunities in emerging markets like Southeast Asia and South America. Southeast Asia is one of Zavio’s major export markets. Shauchau You, Vice President of Zavio indicated that it is common for manufacturers to sell home cameras or solutions to telcos in Southeast Asia through local SIs and distributors. To approach telcos, most Asian manufactures work with SIs, distributors or branded companies by

private-label business for telco projects. They take the same approach as they do with alarm monitoring and security service providers. Only a few largesized companies like Sercomm or those whose specialty is in telephony or settop boxes, like Zinwell, can approach the telcos directly by offering valueadded services like free small cell or provision of total solutions. Almost all of their products are sold through OEM and ODM projects.

The smart home market comprises home security, automation and energy management. For suppliers at the show, the home security market is their main battlefield, generating the most profit. Home automation is a space they are targeting next, although they position these products and services for the highend market. Network cameras are major contributors to the home security market, in terms of sales revenue. The products can also be used for small offices and retail stores. Ben Huang, Digital Product Marketing Specialist of Product Dept of Zinwell Corporation indicated that the home security camera is the first product line to target for entering the smart home market.
Interviews conducted at the show reveal that Chinese companies tend to offer surveillance kits that consist of cameras and 4-channel NVRs or home NAS for the home security market. Moreover, the consumer-centric smart home market forces manufacturers to focus on user-friendly software and user application to make their products more appealing in a highly competitive market. Home automation is the next focus for Asian makers after security. Bruce Wang of Compro said that home automation is a value-added feature for home security cameras. Compro offers a cloud camera based on ZigBee technology, featuring power saving features and a long life cycle. So far, home automation solutions are considered as the high-end segment of the smart home market. Most Asian network camera manufacturers enter the market by providing video door phone cameras, peephole cameras or indoor cameras with motion detection. Products like Brinno’s PHV MAC feature easy DIY and senior-friendly setup. Video surveillance, video recording and DIY alarm monitoring are common features. They co-work with leading companies like Control4 to enter the market. The other way to enter the market is May/June 2014 mySMAhome.com 43

to release network cameras with simple home control functions. The providers are required to have design capability in software integration and wireless networks. Take Compro for example, its cameras are bundled with C4Home software to enable home automation by remotely controlling home appliances with the built-in IR remote control. Energy management is becoming more important, too, especially in Europe. Only a few companies offer simple functions like indoor temperature alarm and control through PIR or temperature sensor. For instance, StarVedia released its Temperature Alarm System (TAS), which offers intelligent surveillance for homes and stores. Users can ask the babysitter to turn off the air conditioner through the built-in speaker and infrared thermometer of its network cameras. We can expect more and more new network cameras that support simple energy management functions like temperature control as value-added features.

Smart home product features are simple, useful and affordable. For home users, user-friendly software and experience are two decisive factors before making a purchase. Home security cameras, mostly referring to those network cameras, are ranked as entry-level products,
in terms of hardware specs. Makers don’t emphasize on advancements in technology, but on practical and fascinating user experiences. Cloud services are a selling point when talking about storage among Asian makers. At present, both local and cloud storage media are available. S D m e m o r y c a rd s c a n b e o n e major adoption for alarm-triggered recordings. Some choose 2CH or 4CH NVRs as the recording bank, although a home NAS may be a more affordable alternative. Cloud storage saves costs for the user, with many manufacturers offering free-of-charge storage. However, privacy can be an important issue to notice when it comes to any free service. Therefore, they offer secured personal cloud storage, including free space at Amazon server, Dropbox and Google Drive for privacy. Traditional surveillance companies prefer to promote surveillance kits with local storage solution; new entrants like telecommunicationsbased companies tend to promote cloud storage solutions. Of course, any home device requires a trendy exterior, and home security cameras are no exception. Sleek design and compact size are two distinguishing features for the homeuse models among network cameras. Regarding form factor, cube models are currently the mainstream. This year, suppliers promoted models that support PTZ functionality, along with mini dome and bullet models for outdoor use. Models with fish-eye lenses are also promoted. Moreover, Asian manufacturers promote new value-added features, such as waterproof (IP66) and ROI (region of interest). ROI offers bandwidth and storage optimization through targeted image capturing of specific important areas for preview and recording. H.264 is the mainstream video streaming format. Models supporting H.265, which was approved by ITU in 2013, can be seen as early as late 2014.

CHINESE HOME CAMERA MAKERS’ AGGRESSIVE MOVES FOR EXPORTS China makers deem the home security camera industry to be uprising in the following years. Being export-oriented, they smell a business opportunity in the global market demand of usability and trendy outlook. They also addressed importance of the emerging domestic market where surveillance kits are still in high demand and the sales of affordable own-brand models has been growing. By Weili Lin
China is the largest sourcing base for home security cameras with hundreds of direct manufacturers and traders, offering both OEM/ODM and own-brand business. There are large companies like Foscam, Hikvision, Dahua, and SMART EYE (Wansview), along with much more small and midsized suppliers. The China camera suppliers are clustered in Guangdong and Zhejiang. They consider Europe and North America to be two major markets. They rely on distributors and resellers for export business. A few of them like Foscam put their own-brand cameras to physical or online stores like Amazon. Langshixing exports part of its products under its own brand Slinda. The majority of the China-made cameras are distributed worldwide under their customers’ brands nevertheless. For example, Yiant offers OEM and ODM services to worldwide branded companies, mostly in Europe, Asia and the US.

User experience is an emphasis for China makers, referring to applicationoriented design and ease of use. They try to offer products with easy setup and userfriendly experience that are important for home users. Yao of Hikvision indicated that ease of use is a major design direction for the consumer market. Jimmy Cai, Sales Director of Huanso indicated that wireless systems are more suitable for home users than those wired solutions without complicated wiring. Cai added that plugn-play is essential for the DIY market. So far, Wi-Fi and RF2.4GHz are two major wireless standards. Wi-Fi connectivity is the major adoption for new products. We can see application-oriented solutions like baby monitors which can also be used to watch the elderly and pets. The cameras
usually come with cute shapes and wireless connectivity with small-sized monitors or wireless mobile devices. In terms of functionality, users can setup configuration within minutes by the mobile phone or control by the remotes. Besides, Huanso’s IP cameras features non-stop vibrating alert to notify users more effectively unlike most systems sending solely message alerts. Regarding ease of use, Milesight’s mini dome features a click-open enclosure to offer easy maintenance. Multifunctional or integrated design is kind of China’s innovation. Milesight’s, one of a few companies to offer integrated function, releases cube IP cameras supporting remote surveillance over SIP phones besides smartphones and PCs. Moreover, JMC Electon offers JMC-WF28 Wi-Fi home security camera, resembling alarm sensors and featuring wall-mounting and remote control. The sensor-like outlook is designed to warn intruders and avoid sabotage. EAZZYDV bulb-shaped IP cameras work as both Wi-Fi cameras and LED bulbs. The device can just be screwed in like a bulb and comes with the rechargeable backup battery for emergency use. The product supports universal AC voltage range from 100 to 240V, applied for worldwide markets. Those two are kind of hidden-type cameras.

RESIDENTIAL VIDEO DOORPHONE GOES
IP AND WIRELESS
The video doorphone, also called the video intercom, is evolved into a multifunctional device in conjunction with network capability and home automation. Video doorphones for smart home are integrated with security, intercommunication and home automation features. With enhanced importance beyond entry management, it is moving from home entryways to the home center. By Weili Lin
INTEGRATION OF SECURITY, COMMUNICATION AND AUTOMATION The video doorphones in the smart home combine intercommunication, access control, alarming and home automation into a single platform. No doubt, users are benefited to have easier and more manageable home security. We
conclude four major trends, including wireless connectivity, digitalization, trendy outlook, and integration with home automation. The video door phone system for the smart home, generally comprises control monitors, and door stations with builtin megapixel cameras. There are models called peephole door viewers supporting
wireless connectivity with mobile devices like mobile phones or tablets instead of indoor stations. Popular features consist of remote intercommunication, access control and monitoring. With increasing demand of connected home, home owners want their video door phone systems to be smarter. Therefore, we can see more and more models supporting alarming and home automation features over the next few years.
EASIER AND MORE MANAGEABLE HOME SECURITY
RF2.4GHz and Wi-Fi are two major adoptions for wireless connectivity with mobile control monitors (Picture by courtesy of Unitech TASHI Solution).

The video doorphones pair up wireless or fixed monitors and built-in or external security cameras for remote control and monitoring. The system connects visitors to the user's smartphones or tablets, used as the mobile control center, when the user is not at home. Users can view and allow access of visitors remotely with mobile phones. Aside from unlocking doors remotely, some of them are accompanied with alarming function like PIR detector and event alerts for
enhanced home security. They support motion-activated recording and image capture of approaching visitors in a SD card or built-in DVR. The built-in camera can automatically take photo and record video when motion is detected via the built-in PIR sensor. Like most surveillance cameras, some video door phones with built-in cameras support nighttime and pan-tilt operations. To offer wider viewing angles, fish-eye lens can be integrated at times. There are another solutions offering extended home security by connection with the door camera, smart door lock and magnetic door sensor. In addition, some complicated systems incorporate security sensors to detect fire, gas leakage and burglar intrusion with alarm notification to the management center. To cater for smart home users, ease of use is more appealing apart from affordable pricing and trendy outlook. The intuitive interface of control monitor offers easy operation on intercommunication, photo viewing, alarm setup, and home control. Also, easy installation is attractive for the DIY market.
TCP/IP FAVORED OVER WIRELESS CONNECTION The smart intercoms for home use feature Internet connection. Current offerings consist of wired and wireless solutions. Products provided by Asian suppliers are mostly wired solutions. For home users, the wireless solution, free from wiring problems, is considered to be more appealing in terms of easy installation and interoperability with mobile devices. The wireless indoor units typically come with LCD displays, and some of them are portable models used as mobile phones. RF2.4GHz and Wi-Fi are two major adoptions for wireless connectivity with mobile control monitors. Wi-Fi connectivity is getting popular due to its high compatibility with smartphones for consumers; however, it has unstable signal transmission when traveling the wall. Regarding RF2.4GHz compliant devices, they support intelligent frequency hopping
from 2.4GHz to 2.4835GHz to change RF channel automatically in order to avoid interference from other 2.4GHz devices like WLAN router, microwave and cordless phone. Regarding the wired solution for smart home applications, digital TCP/ IP models are major promotions though wireless models could be more attractive for those who prefer DIY systems. For more stable solutions, the systems that adopt internet TCP/IP technology to void complicated wiring installation are highly promoted by suppliers. The digital intercom system is easy to install, manage and upgrade than traditional analog models. Supporting SIP protocol, the video doorphones allow free communication between SIP and mobile phones. It is a cost-saving solution to offer video communication.
HOME AUTOMATION GAINING INTEREST Though integration of home automation still belongs to the high-end market, we can see more and more new products integrate with simple home control features, such as control over lighting, shading, HVAC, TV, elevator and home appliance controls. The common communication protocols adopted consist of RF433, RS485, ZigBee, Z-Wave, KNX and Wi-Fi. In China, RF433 is a popular and cost-saving adoption for home automation and for connections with alarm sensors. When it comes to home use, visually appealing becomes a nice-to-have feature. The sleek design and thin form factors are stressed. We can see those trendy products with metal-casing and slim form factor measuring less than 15mm. May/June 2014 mySMAhome.com 51

VIDEO DOORPHONE GROWS FAST IMS Research, part of IHS, predicts worldwide unit shipments of video doorphones will grow by 7.5 percent during the next five years. The research firm added that the $1.8 billion global door phone market is transitioning from audio to video technology, with video set to grow and account for 50 percent of unit shipments in 2017. It points out that a reduction in the price of video doorphones, and the consumer’s perception of increased security via better identification of visitors are two of major driving forces. For manufacturers, keen price competition in the audio door phone industry pushes them to move toward the video door phone market with higher profit. It thinks the dropping price makes video door phones more accessible to wider markets. Functional trends include increased integration with building automation, a transition toward “hands off” indoor units along with larger 7-inch screen sizes, and an increase in the use of network systems and megapixel cameras.

Z-WAVE: AN ECOSYSTEM, NOT JUST A STANDARD
Wireless transmission for the smart home will see a process similar to the shift from landline phones to mobile phone. Wireless technologies will dominate the retrofit smart home.
Z-wave Evangelist C.K. SZE
Z-Wave Evangelist in Asia C.K. Sze was invited to present the benefits of Z-Wave at SMAhome International Conference & Exhibition 2014 (powered by Secutech). His talk covered why Z-Wave’s technology is an optimal choice for smart home solutions, as well as Z-Wave’s implications for security, hospitality and residential markets. While home automation is nothing new, the market has been dominated by solutions that use wired transmission. Wired transmission is inherently superior to its airborne counterpart, with mature technology that installers are experienced with, abundant bandwidth and resistance to interfering signals. The problem is that it is expensive. Really expensive. Sze says that the Internet of Things will inevitably push the capabilities of home automation to even households with average incomes. Wireless transmission helps bring costs down significantly for both materials and installation. Sze believes that wireless transmission for the smart home will see a process similar to the shift from landline phones to mobile phones, where the reliability of
58 mySMAhome.com May/June 2014
landline phones was eventually overshadowed by the ubiquity and convenience of mobile phones. Wireless technologies will dominate the retrofit smart home market because wires are impractical in many situations. Leading global smart home product and service providers have adopted Z-Wave as their protocol of choice, such as the tier–1 US telcos Verizon and AT&T, as well as other big brands like ADT, Alarm. com, Honeywell, Kwikset, Vivint and more. What makes Z-Wave an optimal choice? According to Sze, Z-Wave is the only wireless transmission technology to feature all of the following characteristics that are essential to a practical smart home solution: •Reliable transmission through a mesh network •Secure, encrypted communication between devices •Low power consumption and minimal electromagnetic radiation •Easy to use, plug-and-play setup •Guaranteed interoperability and backward compatibility Sze admits that the smart home concept is a hard sell. Most devices are not must-haves, which is why the entry point for a smart home system should begin with security systems, lighting and energy management, which provide immediate and observable benefits. He added that the five-star hotel Wynn Las Vegas installed 65,000 wave devices in 2011. The installation significantly saved the hotel time and money, while causing negligible destruction to its original decor. According to Sze, visitors now have a better experience at the hotel, having the ability to control their whole room via a single, unified UI. As for the hotel, its security team can easily monitor 2,716 rooms for any anomalies; more importantly, the new system cuts energy bills by 40%.
BOSCH HIGHLIGHTS THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTELLIGENT CAMERAS IN SMART HOMES Many features of current smart homes are enabled by individual devices now. Bosch foresees the possibility of substituting them with “intelligent cameras” in the near future.
Director–Key Accounts, Asia Pacific of Bosch Security Systems BISWAS SURAJIT
"Bosch’s vision of a smart home, where multiple intelligent cameras enable a homeowner to be more aware of events that occur inside and outside the home through timely notifications and real-time video viewing."
At SMAhome International Conference 2014, Biswas Surajit, Director–Key Accounts, Asia Pacific of Bosch Security Systems gave a presentation on the role cameras play in a smart home. In his presentation, "Opportunities in Residential Security and Smart Home," Biswas cites a report by IMS Research, emphasizing the massive opportunity for home security cameras: the global smart home market will reach US$3 billion in 2014 and $7.3 billion by 2017. The rapidly developing global smart home market is expected to see growth accelerate over the next three years. Surajit Biswas says security will play an important role in this market, citing an IMS report that forecasts network video surveillance equipment will reach $1.8 billion in total revenue by 2020. Biswas observes that many features of current smart homes are enabled by individual devices, and proposes the possibility of addressing them with “intelligent cameras.” Biswas outlines Bosch’s vision of a smart home, where multiple intelligent cameras enable a homeowner to be more aware of events that occur inside and outside the home through timely
notifications and real-time video viewing. Eventually, smart home cameras will become complex, fully integrated systems that have advanced features like face recognition, pet recognition and emergency classification—such as smoke, fire or flooding. Many of the devices in our everyday lives have become connected in one way or the other, and cameras will play an increasingly important role in that interaction, Biswas said. “In your house, there are many things that are happening simultaneously. At any moment, you need the ability to actively observe what’s happening in various places inside and outside a home. If there is someone in your garden, you’ll want to see who it is. If there is a person or a pet on your couch, you might also want to make sure it’s safe. You’ll want to see if there’s a fire in your home, or if the doors are opened or closed.” All of these events can be detected and monitored by an intelligent camera. Looking at a typical home security setup, Biswas finds multiple devices that can be replaced by a single intelligent camera. Security applications like intrusion detection, verification, perimeter surveillance and elderly care; multimedia applications like entertainment and video conferencing—the applications are endless for cameras in a smart home. Finally, Biswas outlined Bosch’s picture of a smart home: multiple intelligent cameras that replace standalone, single-purpose devices and isolated systems to form a fully integrated system in which cameras can understand different activities, send timely notifications and allow real-time viewing of video. “Real time viewing is especially important because you need to see the video while the action is taking place, not two hours after the incident,” Biswas emphasized.

AMARYLLO TURNS TO SKYPE FOR PRIVACY PROTECTION AND GOOGLE FOR FREE STORAGE Both Google and Microsoft are technology giants that offer reliable, convenient and secure cloud services. It is refreshing to see a home security manufacturer incorporate widely-used products and services into their cameras.
Sales Manager Jacob Hanks
In a talk at the SMAhome International Conference & Exhibition 2014 (powered by Secutech), Amaryllo Sales Manager Jacob Hanks spoke about the company’s design philosophy, as well as its interesting approach to video surveillance. Amaryllo, founded in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, has been designing, developing and manufacturing its Skype products since 2012. Amaryllo’s current products include a wireless security camera and a baby monitor, which are called the iCam HD and iBabi HD, respectively; both products are powered by Skype. Hanks also mentioned a new miniature wall-mount wireless Skype video camera called iSensor HD and a video door phone in the pipeline. Amaryllo’s line of home security cameras uses Skype’s proprietary protocol to stream live audio and video to smartphones, tablets and PCs. Hanks said it took the company significant R&D resources— two years and multi-million dollars—to finally meet the strict specifications set by Skype, now owned by Microsoft, to approve and certify its products. This was due to the many difficult specifications that needed to be met; one of them is the streaming
60 mySMAhome.com May/June 2014
video latency, which mandates the video latency to be less than 0.5 seconds on a typical connection. In some cases, other P2P VoIP and video calling services can experience accumulated video latency of more than 50 seconds before finally dropping a call. Skype's P2P technologies ensure users see less than 0.5 seconds of streaming video latency. To encode live video in Skype's 256-bit encryption, Amaryllo worked with a semiconductor company to design a 600 MHz processor with a proprietary Linux system to embed Skype's protocol. The company put more than 20 engineers on this project to overcome the many implementation difficulties. The company plans to migrate to a 800 MHz CPU next year to support more features and improve performance. Amaryllo is the first and last company to receive full certification from Microsoft Skype Division for standalone home security products—the program was shut down in 2013. Hanks says it made more sense to use existing, proven technology that is know for its reliability and quality, rather than reinvent the wheel for possibly lesser results. In addition to using Skype’s protocol for audio and video transmission, Amaryllo also allows users to store video in the cloud via Google Drive. Both Google and Microsoft are technology giants that offer reliable, convenient and secure cloud services, like VOIP and cloud-based storage; using them for home security is an interesting approach. It is refreshing to finally see a camera manufacturer incorporate widely-used products and services into their cameras. The company has filed more than 10 patents covering industrial design, installation method, privacy protection, cloud storage and more. The company has been meeting with numerous interested parties, including some large telcos and global home appliance giants.
SKYWATCH: REBUILDING APPLIANCES Switching things on and off, even remotely, is very 1970s. Imagine redesigning an everyday object as mundane as a thermostat from the ground up, like Nest did. You create so much value that Google is willing to acquire you for $3.2 billion.
Co-founder Dr. Wei-Chao Chen
Skywatch co-founder Dr. Wei-Chao Chen gave a keynote at SMAhome International Conference & Exhibition 2014 (powered by Secutech). His talk, titled “Rebuilding Appliances,” centers on the idea that smart home appliances are now vehicles for businesses to deliver services to customers. Dr. Chen opened his presentation with a reference toward rice cooker manufacturers—they designed a great product 60 years ago, and it has not had to change significantly even to this day. “Most other fields do not have this kind of luxury. For example, even with classic design elements, Porsche has to evolve their sports cars every couple years. Why? The market changes—you have to catch up.” This is particularly evident in the electronics industry, where chips and microprocessors follow Moore’s Law, pushing device makers to embrace new technologies or fade away into obsolescence. The mobile phone industry is an excellent example. After the introduction of microprocessors and general-purpose computing into smart phones, a smartphone has now become more important than a user’s wallet, due to the massive amount of
personal data stored on and accessed by the devices. In the past four years, mobile Internet traffic grew more than tenfold; these always on, always connected devices have enabled more and more products and services that now revolve around this new ecosystem. For example, Philips Hue is a home lighting solution that uses a ZigBee router and a Wi-Fi network to enable users to control LED light bulbs through smartphones. Kickstarter-born SmartThings allows users to control compatible on/off switches through its home automation gateway—again, made possible by advances in smartphones and the mobile Internet. “But, switching things on and off, even remotely, is very 1970s,” Chen said. “Imagine redesigning an everyday object as mundane as a thermostat from the ground up, like Nest did. You create so much value that Google is willing to acquire you for $3.2 billion.” “In the field of surveillance or smart home applications, there has been quite a few devices that have this sort of smartness built into them,” Chen continued. Talking about Piper cameras made by

Blacksumac (recently acquired by iControl Networks), Chen said that it are no longer just a hardware—it has built-in temperature and motion sensors, and it can talk to many other types of sensors, which together help it let users know how “well” their house is doing. The house becomes a living organism. The reason why these projects have gained so much interest not only lies in their capabilities, but also the way they revolve around user experiences. Chen said Skype, originally a little company from Scandinavia, eventually overtook the VoIP market because it ticked many more boxes for users than, say Windows NetMeeting, an app bundled with Windows almost two decades ago. Both promised to change communication forever, but ultimately only one delivered an experience that users could trust. “The key lies in the little things,” Chen said. Today, software is no longer a binary file that users download, nor a box that is shrink-wrapped and sold for $49.99. Software has become a carrier for services. Similarly, Chen emphasized that electronics is not about selling hardware anymore: hardware has become
62 mySMAhome.com May/June 2014
a carrier for businesses to deliver software, which in turn delivers the real product—service. In that context, it even becomes possible to replace dedicated hardware and combine the functionalities of multiple devices into a single, generic device. An example would be a smartphone with a video surveillance app, which turns it into a basic network camera. In the same way Fedex is a delivery service and not a box inventory company, the key to providing tangible value to customers lies not in the hardware, but what businesses make the hardware do, Chen said. Being able to connect and control the devices is just the tip of an iceberg, because the true value lies in “the conversations: how devices, or Internet of Things, can talk to others, and use the data to deliver more useful services,” Chen said. This ultimately becomes an ecosystem—an app store for appliances, so to speak. The full dimensionality of appliance intelligence will only reveal itself when we can aggregate all this sensory data in the cloud and across different time, users, and even services.

The competitive landscape in the home security space continues to increase as more entrants look to penetrate the market’s growth opportunity. IHS projects the Americas residential intruder alarm market to grow 7.1% and 9.4% in 2014 and 2015 respectively. The commercial market is forecast to grow 4.4% and 5.9% during this period in comparison. IHS predicted more entrants would enter the industry following the footsteps of telecommunication companies such as Comcast, AT&T, Time Warner, and many others. These companies along with traditional intruder alarm providers are driving the penetration of home security systems by integrating home automation features such as energy management, intelligent door locks, and selfmonitoring video cameras with security systems. Allowing end-users to interact with their systems remotely via smartphone or tablet is another added benefit that is driving adoption of these solutions. IHS projects the US residential penetration rate for intruder alarm products to increase 5-8% for over the next few years as a result of this trend. Nest’s product line falls within the home automation space more so than security, but as the trend to combine the two blossoms it seems evident that Google will develop a security hardware offering as well. The strong growth opportunity in the intruder alarm industry could potentially lead even more companies attempting to enter the space. The influx of competitors has been welcomed by the industry so far because it helps increase the penetration rate of home security systems; however whether there is enough room for everyone to flourish becomes a more important topic as the market matures. 78 mySMAhome.com May/June 2014
