Editor’s Note
Smart Home Continues to Heat up While the year still has one-fourth left on its calendar, 2014 has been a remarkable year of accelerating development for smart home. Just last month, another M&A rumor was confirmed: Samsung acquired SmartThings. Samsung has not been hiding its strong ambition to dominate the smart home market, having made numerous strategic moves throughout the year. But, they are not the only company with plans to invade the home. Looking at this year’s top headlines, it is clear that some interesting dynamics are at play: 1. The battle for smart home goes beyond devices; it is also a battle of standards and communication protocols. 2. M&A deals, the formation of alliances like the AllSeen Alliance and standards bodies like the Open Internconnect Consortium and Thread, and ecosystems formed around mobile device giants like Apple and Google are clearly dividing the smart home market into different “camps.” 3. The gateway, or hub, is currently the most effective way to implement intelligent interaction of devices within a home. 4. Home appliance makers see smart home and connected devices as a big opportunity, but have so far failed to create compelling products. 5. Information security and privacy concerns are two fundamental problems that need to be addressed for smart home to reach beyond enthusiasts. 6. Cloud-based intelligence is making smart home a reality thanks to breakthroughs in wireless networking and IoT technologies. We organized multiple evens in Taipei and Shenzhen late last month to share these observations. One formula for smart home success is: hardware + software + cloud services. While it is certainly possible to develop all three parts of the formula, capturing just a single element and picking up the other pieces through partnerships is equally viable. At the end of the day, it is all about creating value that goes beyond a single product and offering a superior user experience that delights users. As a media platform, this is exactly what we hope to facilitate. We invite elite makers to share their visions and showcase new ideas and products, allowing our readers (you!) to easily find potential partners and discover new opportunities.

Chuango Security Technology Corporation
Bringing
Smart Home Tech to Ordinary Families By Editorial Dept
Established in 2001 by Ken Li and his late father Lee, Chuango Security Technology Corporation specializes in radio frequency technology and wireless smart home systems, ranging from DIY security and home automation to energy and health management. When Chuango began making radio signal antennae and security alarm systems, it operated mostly as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), supplying to distributors, resellers and alarm-monitoring companies in China, Japan and the U.S. Then came 2010, the company expanded its production lines from Fuzhou to Shenzhen, doubling its capacity to accommodate accelerated sales growth. In 2013, Chuango achieved another milestone that catapulted the company to the road of branding: the G5 GSM/ SMS RFID Touch Alarm System won the Product of the Year Award (Intruder Alarm or Exterior Deterrent Category) from IFSEC & FIREX Awards. “Winning this prestigious award certainly means a lot to us as it recognizes our commitment and continuous dedication to providing innovative solutions to our customers, 8 mySMAhome.com September/October 2014
Founded in Fuzhou, China in 2001, Chuango Security Technology Corporation is a trendsetting innovator and dynamic developer of wireless smart home and DIY security systems. The company, along with its new smart home brand smanos , is rapidly expanding its global footprint and solution portfolio, with products and systems researched in Fuzhou, Taipei and Silicon Valley, designed in Shenzhen and Amsterdam, created and packaged in Dongguan, and brought to life worldwide. In keeping its promise of simple security, smart innovation and ultimate user experience, Chuango fuses technology and design into human-centric products to provide affordable, easy-to-use smart home solutions to residential and recreational property owners in all corners of the globe.
said Ken Li, founder and CEO of Chuango. “For the show’s 40-year history, the category award winner has never been an Asian brand, nada. I believe our young, energetic and creative team will continue to spice things up in the industry and markets worldwide.” After stealing the show, the company swiftly shifted its business model and focus to introduce more private-label and branded products directly to distributors and retailers, etching another mark in its rapid transformation. “Developing consumer electronic-like DIY smart home systems requires a lot of investment in R&D and constant market studies and promotions, which cannot be sustained by the not-so-profitable OEM/ODM business. If we want to break free from the shackles of a stereotypical Asian OEM, we must grow with times to achieve something greater,” Li said. “Many manufacturers change products or marketing strategies passively. We lead by thinking differently, making adjustments proactively, and we always introduce fresh elements to everything that we do.” Thanks to Chuango’s accelerated year-on-year revenue and personnel growth, the company has the resources and ammunitions to further build its research facilities, outside of Fuzhou and Shenzhen, in Taipei, Amsterdam and – in the near future – Silicon Valley to sustain its brand development of Chuango and smanos, as well as category development f ro m b u rg l a r a l a r m ( C h u a n g o ) t o residential surveillance, health and energy management, and smart home (smanos).
Extending Production Prowess Wi t h t h e g o - t o - m a r k e t s t r a t e g y expanding from fulfilling orders for importers and resellers to include mainstream distribution and retail channels, Chuango is in need of even greater production capacity. “We acquired a 2,000-square-meter production plant in the Changan district of Dongguan in June, and the facility just went online in August,” Li shared. “Before we grow our product categories, we’re already anticipating more diverse system and September/October 2014 mySMAhome.com 9

Another reason is that the smart home market is even more demanding on the product aesthetics and design detail. While we’ve had our in-house industrial design team all these years, molding and plastic injection were always outsourced, until now.” This new 2,000-square-meter or 20,000-square-foot production base ensures streamlined development a n d p ro d u c t i o n f l o w s , n o t t o mention further strengthened quality assurance procedures along the way, from design, molding and injection to production and assemblies. “Changan is the center of the molding universe, and we’re confident in having one of the best teams in the industry to meet all future demands, with enhanced production capacity and quality,” Li stressed. The facility is just an

ICT and QA Ready Chuango is also fortifying its s o f t w a re d e v e l o p m e n t ( s y s t e m controls, apps and cloud) and IP communication footing, with the establishment and expansion of the Taipei, Amsterdam and very soon Silicon Valley teams. The satellite teams will be working closely with Fuzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan to expedite time-to-market with respect to next-gen wireless, 4G and cloud solutions. Another machine-tomachine (M2M, or IoT) R&D team is also up and running in Fuzhou, alongside the quality assurance team that ensures international production processes and mass production requirements are met. For Chuango, it is never just a saying. “When we say we want the best for our customers, we deliver.
▓ Quality assurance across Chuango Fuzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan facilities is of international standards.
As we embark on this journey of global marketing and branding, our vision and pursuit for perfection are not limited to local standards; we devise the toughest quality assurance tests possible on all our production lines and products, and are working to extend our warranties from two years to three to five.” Industry reshuffling is imminent, with tech giants and startups as well as security conglomerates coming into the picture. Chuango is laser-focused and has a clear vision and development path, with users and market demands in mind. “We know what our priorities are and will keep doing what we do best,” Li said.
Game Changers Healthy competition is good for any industry. With increased media coverage on the smart home, the industry and market are poised for further maturation and growth, and only the best of the best will remain standing. “Nevertheless, Chuango remains open-minded and opens its arms to any type of collaboration, be it
with security and automation juggernauts or startups with brilliant ideas. We’re looking for sustainable growth, not just one-year wonders,” Li said. While the likes of Apple and Google pose a potential threat, Chuango is more interested in how they tackle users’ problems and adjust go-to-market strategies. “Our strength builds on the fact that we have been exploring the smart home for 14 years, and we are one of the few that can provide integrated hardware and software solutions, with localized support and services.” The future of the smart home will be about integrating security and safety systems, electronic and appliance controls, and entertainment units with wireless and information technologies. “Chuango will continue to work on striking that perfect balance among security, comfort, convenience, personalization, usability and affordability. At International CES 2015, we will be announcing an all new, all-around smart home system that thinks for you, realizing the ultimate simplicity in system setup, operation and user experience,” Li shared excitedly. “We will also be working closely with industry-leading IC provider Silicon Labs, to bring its sub-GHz module solutions to life by empowering our clients and end users with smarter, connected homes.” At the moment, Western Europe and the U.S. are Chuango’s and smanos’ biggest revenue contributors, and “emerging” markets such as Eastern Europe, Russia and CIS, East Asia, ANZ, the Middle East, Africa and LatAm are just ripe for further business development. “For even more detailed market analyses and tailored services, we will hire a few more business development professionals in the U.K., France, Germany and Italy, with ICT distribution and retail channels remaining our major route to market,” September/October 2014 mySMAhome.com 11

Plastic injection machinery to accelerate in-house molding process and output Overall production capacity is now 5X of 2013 achievements. Chuango boasts top-notch in-house research, design, molding, production and assemblies.
Li added. “With dedicated, local sales and marketing efforts, our highly flexible, compatible, affordable DIY solutions, such as security and automation, lighting controls, and energy and health management, are well on their way to become local favorites.”
360 Development With ever-increasing demand for wireless DIY security and smart home systems, Li is rather excited about the next three to five years. “Our sales are forecast to grow by more than 100% per year over the next few years, with multiple product development and business development teams all over the world unleashing their creative potential collaboratively. We’re also open to OEM/ ODM possibilities.” To keep channel and end customers interested and engaged, Chuango is constantly on the lookout for the right fit and talent for “glocalized” development. Cloud-based technology and smart touch devices are promising exponential growth, and Chuango and smanos are poised to expand their portfolio and footprint beyond 12 mySMAhome.com September/October 2014
security to automation, lighting, energy management, entertainment and safety/ health-monitoring devices. “The ability to control a multifunctional system using a smartphone app, coupled with a unique and fashionable product design and interface, is a winning combination,” Li exclaimed. “Technology allows us to reach far beyond average, middle-aged homeowners. For example, we can effortlessly tailor our offerings or user experience to specific market segments, such as telecom operators, student dorms and luxury yachts.” In China, Chuango is piloting the sales of home-use IP cameras together with alarm and safety devices through an online-to-offline retail model, with concept stores opening in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Zhengzhou, Chengdu and more cities that allow end users to experience Chuango smart home wonders before placing orders on site or online. The proliferation of wearable technology is another area that Chuango is keeping an eye on. “Wearable devices, to me, are part of our industry development, as they are designed to make life easier and more convenient,” Li said. “There is no doubt that finding ways to satisfy needs of security, safety, comfort and convenience is the way forward, and we’re more than ready!” Smart home is no exact science, but a unique combination of art and technology. It is Li’s vision that Chuango and smanos products can blend in any ordinary family and be part of their day-to-day life. Like Li, the entire Chuango global team is dynamic, fast-paced and always ready to react to various customer demands and feedback, with award-winning product designs and features that reflect Chuango’s core competence and value. “We are bringing innovative, easy-to-use and aesthetically pleasing products to market, and our offerings ensure significant value and profitability for those who are prepared to put the effort in and grow with us.”

Ease of use, affordablility and smart user experiences drive product developments of the smart home systems. The home DIY surveillance kits are described as combination of smart hardware, software and cloud technology. Software enhancement adds value on home surveillance kits. Video recording plays a crucial role. There are pros and cons toward local and cloud video storage. No doubt, the supporters for secure and complete recorded videos still opt for complete surveillance systems like home surveillance kits or home monitor systems.

Focus DIY home surveillance kits consist of two, four or eight wired or wireless cameras, and a NVR. Other solutions called home monitoring systems come with wireless cameras and portable touch screen displays, offering local storage on a SD card. The mainstream features comprise easy installation, self-explanatory operation, day and night vision, one-way or two-way audio, remote viewing on the smartphone or tablet, motion and sound detection, alert notification and HD video recording. The HD video resolutions are available with 720P, 960P and 1080P. The current offerings include indoor cube, dome and bullet cameras along with IP66 waterproof and vandalresistant outdoor cameras. Users can add cameras from different locations to one account. The NVR with a built-in hard drive designed for 24/7 surveillance provides weeks or even months of recorded videos, depending on hard drive capacity and recording resolutions. Users can customize the recording settings to fit their needs like 720p recording resolution or a lower resolution for extended recording time. There are smart designs like automatic frame rate adjustment. The cameras, with motion detection, maintain low frame rate of 1 fps, and enhance the frame rate up to 25 or 30 fps when detecting any intruder. DIY surveillance kits are widely used for homes and small businesses like small offices and shops. For smart home use, IP cameras are accepted as the mainstream adoption; wireless kits are gaining popularity. In terms of connectivity, 2.4GHz and Wi-Fi are two major wireless standards. Home DIY users prefer to purchase and setup their systems on their own. Wireless connectivity offers clutterfree and hassle-free setup experience for them, whereas wired cameras take their power directly from the mains to avoid the missed crucial moment when the power goes out. Users can just place the cameras in the important outdoor locations without running video cables, and then simply power up the wireless cameras. After setting up the mobile apps, users can start remote monitoring their homes by running multiple viewers. Improved networking and cloud computing technologies make home surveillance easy as 123. The fun for DIY is not just self-installation. Users may take pleasure in customizing the systems on their own. The DIY surveillance kits offer custom settings on motion zones, alert and recording schedules, and bandwidth to match individual’s internet speed.
Challenges and opportunities Smart home system is defined to have a smartphone app or a web portal as a user interface. As network infrastructure matures, home surveillance kits are prone to support the cloud platform and apps for remote viewing and operation on mobile devices. Unlike traditional home surveillance systems, today home users can complete setup with smartphones or tablets with ease. For example, user can just scan the QR code to complete setup and view real-time video remotely from smartphones. Easy setup with handheld devices without PCs provides handy surveillance experience. No installation and contract fees are other selling points. Also, users can upload videos and photos to cloud storage media like Dropbox, Google Drive and Baidu Cloud. In the smart home industry, the revenue generated from hardware sales is relatively small. How to utilize cloud service to achieve a sustainable business model has been a hot topic to discuss. For example, the cloud service from Dropcam delivers a new user experience and business model. It charges for continuous video footage of 7-day cloud recordings. Cloud storage for video backup is adopted to avoid hard drive failure, and prevents intruders from destroying evidence—security footage. At present, the cloud service is provided by system providers or third-party software companies. Besides, the cloud storage lowers down the retail pricing of the surveillance kit that contains a

NVR. However, the profitable business models and operational stability are two challenges to deal with. Bandwidth availability and invasion of privacy are viewed as a growth inhibitor of cloud storage. Besides, the incomplete uploaded videos may lead to disputes. The adoption of the NVR or home NAS makes users exempt from occupied bandwidth by other applications like online gaming. In addition, cloud storage can only be affordable in the places where network infrastructures are mature like the US.
Smarter function, safer home Hardware functionality is limited; software creates more value to the systems. The majority of home surveillance kits are offered by professional surveillance system companies. They offer nearly professional-grade systems with affordable prices to smart home users. The user interface is simple, but the back-end software functionality can be complicated. Therefore, we can expect more and more intelligent features to be introduced for home surveillance systems, such as auto-tracking, fogpenetration or defog function, anti-glare and Intelligence Video Surveillance (IVS) features. The intelligence video surveillance features include face recognition, perimeter alarm, and multiple intelligent video query functionality like snapshot and smart search. Region of Interest (ROI) face detection let users to track and snapshot moving individuals walking through the viewing region.

SpotCam: Integrated hardware and software for next-generation cameras
We offer more than just P2P monitoring services. Our cloud services offer a complete solution package with flexible storage plans.
SpotCam differentiates itself from traditional surveillance companies that emphasize property and family security. The company believes a network camera’s value is in the content it shares.
I
ncepted in 2013, SpotCam was founded by a group of CCTV camera and IT networking veterans. The company distributes its products through consumer retail channels rather than traditional CCTV camera channels, which shows which audience the company is targeting. The company’s products are currently sold in consumer electronics retail stores in Europe, Japan, the Middle East, and the U.S. Unlike most companies in the industry, the founders of SpotCam decided to take a fresh approach to video surveillance in the consumer space. SpotCam’s camera focuses on integrating an exceptional user experience, superior hardware components and an attractive industrial design.
User Experience SpotCam dropped local storage in favor of cloud-based storage. Instead of requiring users to go through agonizing procedures to setup home storage solutions like NAS or NVRs, the company’s cameras simply store video and images in the cloud. “When consumers bring home a camera, they do not want to go through complicated setting and configurations, let alone buying a DVR that they have never heard of before. Today’s consumers are familiar with smartphones, tablets and mobile apps; cloud services build on that knowledge and experience sounds to provide trouble-free setup and minimal learning curves,” said Jacky Lin, CEO of SpotCam. SpotCam’s cloud service provides an easy-to-use user interface and flexible storage plans.
Performance What makes a product stand out in the smart home market are usability and hardware performance, Lin said. Although a sleek design may be attractive at first, the effect wears off if the product lacks practicality and performance. Whereas most home security cameras are equipped with 1/4-inch image sensors, SpotCam’s camera features a 1/3-inch image sensor and 12 infrared (IR) LEDs to ensure excellent low-light performance. According to Lin, the company plans to take the camera’s performance one step further by releasing in Q3 2014 a waterproof camera that is designed to sit under the roof or in the courtyard.
Freemium Service Model Lin says the magic of today’s connected devices lie in the software, and is proud of Spotcam’s cloud service. Rather than a one-size-fit-all plan that does not really fit anyone well, SpotCam offers consumers the option to choose from different service tiers. “We offer more than just P2P monitoring services. Our cloud services offer a complete solution package with flexible storage plans,” Lin stressed. Users who only need one day of storage will not need to subscribe to paid storage plans since the camera includes out-of-the-box free storage for 24 hours of video, real time streaming, motion and audio detection, and event notifications. Users who need
more storage can simply subscribe to a plan that suits their needs.
Moving Beyond Simple Surveillance In addition to video surveillance, SpotCam’s cloud services emphasize video sharing features and secure data storage. Consumers use home network cameras for many more purposes than just video surveillance, Lin said. “Homeowners use cameras to make sure their children, pets and property are safe, but they also use them to capture and share merry moments with family and friends.” According to Lin, sharing features could be another “killer app” for home network cameras. The challenge with sharing videos captured by cameras in the home is concerns over privacy. Lin assures users that only the videos they wish to share become available, and only to the people they wish to share them with. SpotCam adopts bank-level encryption technology and SSL security to secure user data. Since the company uses Amazon’s S3 storage solution, physical security of the data is taken care of by the Internet giant. For new entrants entering the smart home, choosing a mature product category to build on helps avoid certain risks. “Video monitoring is currently the most mature and practical application of camera technology in the smart home. Our experience with the technology and in the industry helps us build exceptional products for the consumers of today and tomorrow,” Lin said. “The downside of a mature product category is fierce price competition and knock-off products; however, integrated hardware and software solutions not as easy to copy as hardware is. We can stay ahead of the game as long as we continue to develop innovative features and exceptional user experiences, which we fully intend to do. A global outlook of
Cloud-based
Home Management Services Cloud-based home management services can allow users to remotely control household features like lighting and air conditioning when away from the home. Other examples of use-cases include: receiving a notification on a smartphone or tablet when children return home from school; remotely adjusting the temperature of the home while at work via a smartphone, tablet or computer; and receiving alerts if an elderly relative deviates from their normal routine. According to the IHS “Smart Home Subscribers Intelligence Service”, the global installed base of cloud-based home management services is projected to grow to 44.6 million at the end of 2018, up from 5.6 million at the end of 2013. This year, 2014, the installed base is expected to surge 63 percent to 9.1 million.

Cloud-based Home Services: the Supplier Landscape The types of companies offering cloud-based homemanagement systems vary widely. One major group consists of existing service providers who have other core business lines; examples are security or telecommunications providers and utility companies. These companies have entered the homemanagement market to reduce customer churn or to increase new subscriber rates and average revenue per user (ARPU). Other types of companies also are entering the fray, including device suppliers and retailers. Smart home specialists are Lisa Arrowsmith, Associate Director, expected to play a major role in the deployment of smart home Connectivity, Smart services globally. This category of companies includes both Homes & Smart Cities, IHS Technology home automation providers that are moving their existing customers to cloud-based services by providing an external communications gateway and an associated backend service; alongside a new breed of connected home specialists, such as Nest, Revolv, SmartThings, and others. The smart home service provider landscape is projected to vary widely by country. In North America, security providers, such as ADT, Alarm.com and Vivint, have been at the forefront of the market, providing combined smart home and professionally monitored security systems. Telecommunications companies, such as Comcast or AT&T, also play a major role. In the European, Middle Eastern and African region (EMEA), utility companies are expected to dominate, accounting for one-third of the installed base at the end of 2018. Utility companies already offering or believed to be in the process of developing smart home devices or service packages in Europe include British Gas, Essent, Eneco, Nuon, RWE, EnBW, and Eon. European 22 mySMAhome.com September/October 2014
multiservice operators (MSO) have generally been slower to enter the smart home service market than those in North America, although there have been exceptions such as Bouygues Telecom and Swisscom. Others, such as SFR and Orange, have also now entered the market, with more expected to follow. In the Asia-Pacific region, some multiservice operators have been offering basic smart home services for a number of years, although volumes have remained relatively low. As more enter the market, with wider value propositions and attractive tiered pricing, the role of MSOs is set to grow. However, it is device suppliers that are expected to drive the majority of growth in Asia-Pacific. In some cases, the device suppliers are expected to focus on the creation of the “smart” hardware, using open standards to make it compatible with services from other companies. However, some appliance suppliers are expected to also “own” the backend system used, creating
their own branded smart home service platforms.
The Diverse Pricing Models of Smart Home Service Providers A variety of pricing models exist for smart home services. While there is some similarity between those of different company types, they can still vary by company, as well as by country or region. Smart home specialists have accounted for the highest proportion of the market historically. They include both home automation providers, such as Control4 or Savant Systems, to name just two, along with an emerging range of connected home specialists, such as Nest, Revolv or SmartThings. Smart home specialists typically include the service element as part of an upfront device or service purchase, although there are some exceptions. However, other company types — ranging from security providers to telecommunications companies, utility companies, security providers, retailers and device suppliers — are gaining market share in the smart home service market, each having an effect on the pricing models. In general, security providers require ongoing monthly fees for smart home services, typically provided in conjunction with a package for professionally monitored security services. This model has been seen from a range of companies, such as Verisure (formerly Securitas Direct), ADT (with its Pulse package), Alarm.com, Frontpoint Security, and others. Multi-service operators (MSOs) entering the market have used a variety of pricing models. In North America, almost all MSOs charge a monthly fee for ongoing smart home services; in contrast, in parts of Europe, some MSOs offer these services with an upfront cost only. An example is Deutsche Telecom’s Smart Home package (using the Qivicon platform); however, a number of others follow the North American pricing model. Similarly, utility companies have pursued both pricing models. Device suppliers starting to provide smart home services are expected predominantly to include the service as part of the upfront device cost; however, as with other company
types, some are projected to pursue the ‘free-mium’ model, offering a basic level of ongoing service as part of the initial cost, with the option to upgrade to additional functionality for a recurring charge. The figure below presents the installed base of smart home services, segmented by pricing model. It is important to note that, in some cases, professionally monitored security services are included as part of these packages, which helps to push the monthly fees into the higher tiers as this becomes a more common feature from certain company types. In terms of regional differences, smart home services in North America, which is has the largest installed base at present, are more likely to be monetized through ongoing charges, partly as a result of the high rate of ‘bundling’ with professionally monitored security services. In contrast, in Europe, upfront system charges are more common, without recurring service fees. IHS projects that a growing number of companies will offer favorable pricing for subscribers of pre-existing business lines without requiring such subscriptions as a pre-requisite. For example, Comcast in the United States offers lower monthly fees for Xfinity triple-play customers, and at one time, British Gas in the United Kingdom offered its Hive active heating system to its existing energy customers with a different pricing model; yet both services are also available to non-customers. In addition, the ‘free-mium’ model is projected to become increasingly popular, particularly from companies currently offering up-front only pricing. Other ways of making money from the provision of smart home services will continue to evolve, including data monetization, user interface advertising and peripheral products, and e-commerce. Europe market:
Energy management is the new trend By Editorial Department
As recently as a decade ago, the smart home market was largely reserved only for the high-end luxury segments. Today, smart home solutions are not as cost-prohibitive, and have become more readily available to the middle-class sectors.
Home automation is still a comparatively new market for the security industry in Europe. Because of the global economic recession, security companies have started looking elsewhere for other ways of kick-starting their business. One of the things trending right now in the EMEA region is energy management and energy savings. As an added-value service, it is not hard to picture that bundled with security could be a number of simple energy management devices that could easily be installed. Juan Madrid, West Europe Area Manager for Fermax, mentioned that energy savings is becoming a real trending topic. Along with various government directives being implemented, he also says, “it’s more related to add-values from integrators and how fast end-users can get their returns of investments. It’s growing, and we cannot expect that it will stop. “ Rishi Lodhia, CEO of Panasonic Cameramanager explained that energy savings is very important, being much more attractive now than home security solutions.
Utilities and telcos pushing towards smart home services Philipp Schuster, Regional Director of Loxone UK said, “utility providers in the UK are now also offering services for energy management. Utility providers like British Gas and Southern Electric have gone beyond only offering smart meters but with systems like Hive, they are also trying to offer smarter heating solutions. Telecommunication companies like Deutsche Telekom are also

highly interested in this space. Telcos have already invested a great deal to build their infrastructure and already have large user base that use their subscription-based services. In an interview with IP&TV News, Jürgen Hase, VP of Deutsche Telekom’s M2M Competence Center, said that he anticipates a number of changes for the German smart home market over the next few years, including the emergence of new service-based models. “We expect four key segments in the smart home market to account for 89 percent of the market: home automation (40%), smart energy (20%), ambient assisted living and digital health care (15%), and self-monitoring and control
(10%),” Hase said. He also points out that cooperation will be critical in the smart home market, saying: “We expect to see a fragmented supplier structure: no single payer will cover all smart home segments. Cooperation will be the key to success.” Because of the attention being focused on energy savings, security solutions (such as alarm or video surveillance systems) as it pertains to home automation have become secondary. “Security is mainly a peace of mind kind of thing. 15 years ago, there was still real drive for it. However, looking at the amount of people that have alarm systems installed but don’t use it percentage wise, the UK is the highest,” Schuster explains. “This can be attributed to generally low crime rates in the UK, but also to the fact that alarm systems are actually too complicated to use,” he added. More and more, the British people are starting to inquire about energy management solutions when it comes to home automation solutions. There are different requirements between

the upper-class and middle-class sectors. On the luxury market, there is a much greater demand for aesthetics and customization as well as turnkey automated and integrated solutions, with everything available on one device. For the middle-class sector, the demand focuses on flexible solutions, with easy retrofit applications into existing homes and systems. All in all, the future of European home automation market seems to lie in energy management and finding other renewable sources of power. Look for trends in continuing development of energy management, and simpler, more affordable and more integrative solutions. Because of the recent explosion of smartphones and tablets, it has become obvious continual development of these features will be based off of these devices. In a matter of fact, the eruption of smart home devices, systems and services in 2014 is a culmination of maturing technologies, environment-friendly regulations and the ubiquity of mobile devices.

If your house is able to think and feel, what can it do for you? Well, it could be an affordable or even a free housekeeper that can automatically take care of your family and property to make your life easy, comfort, organized and secure. Sensors are fundamental for smart home. Smart home systems rely on a number of sensors to gain understanding of the environment to enable devices to respond accordingly. In essence, sensors communicate with each other and the smart home system to make a home intelligent. The intelligence may then be applied to various use cases, such as security, convenience, comfort, energy conservation and more. Today’s sensors are increasingly smart, cheap, compact and power-efficient, each of which are crucial factors in pushing the market toward a truly practical and affordable smart home solution worthy of massmarket adoption. In addition, many sensors in the
market today are multifunctional sensors with built-in wireless connectivity. They also have a stronger focus on user experience—users can easily find sensors that are cheap and easy to set up, measure multiple elements, and interact with a variety of devices through wireless communication protocols. And they last for years without a battery change.
Security, comfort and energy saving Security, comfort and energy conservation are three main motivations for homeowners to purchase smart home systems. According to a study by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, smart home may become the second-highest priority for residential modeling over the next five to ten years. According to another study by Harvard University, 73 percent of consumers demand energy efficiency in their remodeling projects; they achieve this through managing and coordinating lighting control and HVAC systems through automated means or via mobile devices. Research conducted by Global Industry Analysts (GIA) indicates that smart homes of the future will feature more than 20 or even 30 connected sensors and devices. They will likely be linked via a home area network to the Internet as well as the service provider’s back-end systems. A smart home system that aims to make a home more

secure, comfortable and energy-efficient should include the following sensors: • Motion detection/PIR sensors Senses movement and triggers alerts. Major providers offer remote monitoring services that allow users to stream live video from their home cameras when needed. • Ambient light sensors Lets the system know which areas have sufficient lighting. In conjunction with a motion detector, the smart home system may know that it should turn on the lights when motion is detected in a dark room. • Smoke/CO detection sensors Alerts users of potential fire hazards. The smart home system may also know it should turn off fuel-burning appliances, sound alarms, flash lights and more. • Temperature sensors/Thermostat: Measures indoor or outdoor temperatures. Smart home systems can control HVAC appliances to adjust the environment to be more comfortable. • Humidity sensors Measures humidity levels and possibly air quality.
Smart home systems rely on a number of sensors to gain understanding of the environment to enable devices to respond accordingly.
Smart home systems can control HVAC appliances to adjust the environment to be more comfortable. • Water/flood sensors Informs users when water is spilling from a pipe or an appliance. Some systems can cut off water supplies and electricity to prevent disasters. • Press/vibration sensors Detects pressure and vibration. It could be attached to a window for security purposes or a washing machine to alert users when the laundry is done.
A Rosy Picture The United States represents the largest market worldwide, followed by Europe. ON World's recent survey of more than 1,000 US adults forecast phenomenal growth in the coming years. “Over a third believes they will have wireless sensors in their home in five years. Early September/October 2014 mySMAhome.com 29
Exploration adopters plan on having at least 50 sensors in their smart homes within the next five years and they want to integrate them into their WiFi/IP network,” said Mareca Hatler, ON World’s research director. For all respondents, data reliability was selected as the most important feature of a smart home sensing and control system, followed by battery life, IP addressability, smartphone control and app availability. Among all the sensor type, automated security and lighting are popular among consumers, and most homeowners opt for a smart home system because of security reasons. Families with children/elderly can especially benefit from the security that a smart home system provides. According to the survey by ON World, consumers are most likely to buy smoke detector/CO alarms followed by wireless LED light bulbs, smart thermostats and/or a smart appliance. At the moment, wireless sensor devices are primarily used in industrial settings, residential applications are expected to grow phenomenally, mainly for automation and energy management purposes. This sector was worth $244 million in
2011 and is expected to reach $1.1 billion by 2016, showing a CAGR of 35.5 percent between 2011 and 2016, according to BCC Research. The expected prosperity is also exemplified by the growth of key component shipments. “Smart home sensor network chipset shipments will approach 100 million worldwide in 2015, enabling nearly $6 billion in cloud services for energy and home service providers,” Hatler said.
Multi-purpose sensors: Yes, please! The most common combination of sensors in a single package is smoke and heat. There are also 4-in-1 multi-purpose sensors that can detect motion, light, temperature and humidity. For example, FIBARO’s Motion Sensor detects movement and vibrations and measures the current ambient temperature and light intensity. The product is capable of displaying color, which are pre-programmed but fully customizable, allowing users to see at a glance what the sensor is picking up. In addition to making sensors more powerful and capable of gaining a deeper understanding of the surrounding environment,

another benefit is that few sensors need to be installed. This can offer real savings in areas with high labor costs. According to IHS Technology, market trends in North America and Western Europe are showing higher demand and increased usage of multi-purpose sensors. The think tank forecasts the global multi-purpose sensor market to grow at a CAGR of 7.0 percent from 2013 to 2018.
Intelligent sensors enable smarter lifestyles Sensors gather data to help an intelligent system analyze users’ habits and take actions to maximize user comfort and minimize energy consumption. Occupancy and vacancy sensors are commonly referred to as motion and light sensors, which can be applied to help save energy. Lights turn off automatically when a room is unoccupied, and turn on when motion is detected. Vacancy sensors are also used to automatically turn off lights when a room is empty. In addition to lighting, indoor temperature can also be controlled to effectively heat or cool a room depending on the number of people in it. For example, FIBARO’s smart sensor offers intelligent analysis like guest counting. Once the system knows there are more people in the house, it will turn on the ventilation on to let in fresh air. Some sensors also reach beyond comfort to improve users’ wellness. Air quality monitoring startup alima, offers responsive sensors that monitor indoor air quality and sends messages to users regarding pollution levels and predictions of upcoming weather.

est, Yale and five other device makers and chipmakers announced Thread, a new wireless networking protocol. This reinforces the fact that the global smart home market is heating up in a battle that goes beyond end products. For an Asian manufacturer be competitive in the international market, “it has to be more flexible and acutely aware of the pros and cons of each communication standard in order to cater to international buyers, who have diverse demands,” commented Y.K. Chen, Director of New Business Development at Climax Technology, a leading supplier of security, smart home and telecare solutions based in Taiwan. Climax considers its 2008 transition from security to smart home a natural evolution. “We have a long history of working closely with alarm monitoring companies; now we also develop solutions for customers in the telecom industry, such as telcos, ISPs and MSOs, as well as utility companies. We serve both groups with turnkey solutions, whether it is a security brand looking for value-added features or a telco trying to differentiate itself from its competitors,” Y.K. said. “Most successful smart home solutions launched by telecom providers attract customers primarily with home security features. Our experience working with alarm monitoring companies allows us to integrate smart home and home security features in a way that enhances the user experience for both,” he continued. “Meanwhile, security service providers that want to attract new customers also reach out to us to integrate health care, home automation and other value-added features,” Positioned as an one-stop original design manufacturing specialist, Climax’s 20 years of experience with telecommunication and RF technologies enables the company to integrate

Climax offers its customers flexible, customized system designs. “Customers are free to choose whichever wireless technology they prefer, whether it’s Z-Wave, Zigbee, proprietary, or something else. If the customer has experience with system integration, we leave the system open for system connection and communication; if not, we can provide server solutions for monitoring or cloud controlling. Due to security concerns, some alarm monitoring companies prefer local storage devices such as a home NAS or NVR over cloud storage—we help facilitate that as well.” Commenting on the current state of the smart home market, Y.K says it is really taking off. Climax has seen its smart home revenue grow 150 percent in the past two years. “It’s not simply a matter of telcos entering the security business or security service providers entering the smart home business—the two sides are heading in the same direction. However, although the boundary between security and smart home has blurred, there are still differences between professional and self-monitoring markets,” he said. “At the moment, professional security accounts for 10 percent of the total market. 90 percent falls into the DIY or self-monitoring category, which is what many telcos and energy companies are trying to capture. We have very satisfied customers in both camps!”

Exploration The sensor intelligently learns indoor environment and helps modify user habits to minimize contributions to pollution. It sends data to the cloud and pushes results and advice to connected devices, while also providing a holistic view of air quality.
Sense Mother and Motion Cookies feature motion and temperature sensing technologies to analyze, find patterns and self-learn continuously.
Communication standard goes IPaddressable Regardless of the application of sensors, communication between different sensors is crucial. Unfortunately, multiple wireless communication standards coexist and are incompatible with each other. Many popular smart home solutions are still closed systems that adopt proprietary standards. Closed systems and proprietary protocols contribute to the lack of interoperability between systems and devices. Although there are numerous gateways or hubs that attempt to bridge communication between devices that adopt different standards, true interoperability is unlikely to be realized through “duct tape solutions. The majority of wireless sensor networks use proprietary protocols running on sub-GHz or 2.4GHz frequency bands. When a home is equipped with tens or hundreds of wireless sensors continuously working in the full-alert mode, a large amount of energy is consumed. As sensors become more compact, their sizes limit them to use small batteries as their power source. The sensors must minimize energy consumption to extend their lifetime, which is unacceptable for consumer use if it is less than one year. At the same time, sensors must provide high quality monitoring 24/7, as the consequence of unreliable homecare may be life threatening, and will not be tolerated by consumers. The scenario reflects the necessity of activityaware sensor networking, along with the integration of activity recognition algorithms. For instance, if no one is at home, the sensing and networking activity should fall back to standby mode in order to reduce energy consumption. If a user is at home, the sensing and networking needs to provide reliable and predictable monitoring. Low-power and activity-aware sensor

networks with the integration of activity recognition algorithms are on demand. The current connected home systems connect sensors with multiple low-power wireless technologies like Low Power WiFi, Thread, ULE, Z-Wave, ZigBee, and ISM Band Sub-GHz frequency bands (433, 868 and 915 MHz). IP-addressable is the mainstream for smart home sensors. Among the standards, ARM, Big Ass Fans, Freescale Semiconductor, Nest Labs, Samsung Electronics, Silicon Labs, and Yale Security launched Thread in July 2014. Thread is a new IP-based wireless mesh network protocol that will enable smart home devices to carry IPv6 communications with very low power consumption and support large-scale networks for the home with more than 250 nodes. Lisa Arrowsmith, associate director of IHS Technology indicated that Thread is an IPv6 networking protocol built on open standards, designed for low-power 802.15.4 mesh networks. Existing popular application protocols and IoT platforms can run over Thread networks, which means millions of existing 802.15.4 wireless devices already on the market can run Thread with just a software enhancement. According to Transparency Market Research, WiFi used to be the major technology employed in home energy managements systems, accounting for 25.1 percent of the total market in 2012. However, over the forecasted period from 2013 to 2019, ZigBee is expected to show the fastest growth and surpass WiFi to become the primary technology. This is mainly attributed to its growing demand in established markets like Europe and the U.S. on the account of its superior properties like scalability, more interference tolerant and compatibility with most HAN (Home Area Network) devices. ConnectSense by Grid Connect is a platform for low-cost, cloudbased WiFi 802.11b/g wireless sensors that monitor changes in a user's environment and then sends alerts and notifications via phone call, email, text or tweet. Sensors are available to monitor temperature, humidity, water, motion, security and light. WiFi is the ubiquitous wireless technology found in business offices and homes. The utilization of WiFi networks lets users leverage their existing WiFi network without the need to purchase any additional hardware or gateways. ON World’s findings indicated that ZigBee and Z-Wave will have more than half of the sensor network market in 2015, but emerging technologies such as Low Power WiFi and 6LoWPAN will grow even faster. Z-Wave operates in the sub-GHz band, avoiding 2.4 GHz interference.

A Mutually Beneficial Partnership: ADT and IFTTT Jason Lin / jason.yuchi.lin@gmail.com
ADT recently announced a new partnership with IFTTT, the “duct tape of the Internet.” This site will launch an ADT Pulse Channel, which will allow ADT Pulse users to expand the functionality of their systems through integration with IFTTT’s 125 existing channels, including Belkin WeMo, Philips Hue, Nest, SmartThings and many popular online services.
While the arrangement is obviously beneficial for both ADT and IFTTT, what exactly does each party gain from the deal? ADT Pulse currently boasts 850,000 users. The partnership will give the users an enhanced user experience by allowing their ADT Pulse setups to interact with many other services and products they love and use. ADT can differentiate its offering from competitors while also increasing the functionality and use cases of ADT Pulse. Like online services on the Internet, the value of the Internet of Things (IoT) increases exponentially as an ecosystem grows in users, and devices and services. Ambitious players in the smart home space agree, as seen by the numerous acquisitions and partnerships made in 2014. For example, Samsung’s busy year included activities like joining multiple standards bodies—the Open Interconnect Consotium (OIC), the AllSeen Alliance, and announced with Nest a new wireless communication protocol named Thread. It also a c q u i re d s m a r t h o m e s t a r t u p SmartThings and HVAC appliance manufacturer Quietside. Samsung’s strategy seems to confirm the criticality of rapidly expanding both market share and product lineup to become relevant in the IoT Age. Platform wars will continue to play out until the

market saturates to a point of further consolidation. On the other hand, the addition of the ADT Pulse Channel to IFTTT expands the platform’s reach to yet another ecosystem. By allowing ADT Pulse subscribers to bridge the service with other popular connected devices and online services, IFTTT can expect a new influx of active users. Even more valuable is the massive amount of behavioral data users generate when they use the platform; IFTTT will now be able to analyze the data to discover patterns in which services are used together and how they are used. This may lead to the development of truly intelligent services and products that realize the core value of IoT, wearables and smart home, making IFTTT a likely candidate to be swept up by Apple, Google, Samsung or other tech giants. While businesses are excited about the potential of smart home, many users are still holding out. Incompatible standards, high prices, security concerns, complexity of installation and operation, underwhelming use cases are only some of the reasons. The main reason is the lack of data that can support the development of practical and innovative feature sets that will
attract consumers. The smart home market is relatively young, so it will take some time for the data to be collected and analyzed. As an event handling platform, IFTTT shows a lot of promise. Asian manufacturers would also benefit from partnering with IFTTT. Since most Asian manufacturers specialize in P2P technologies and not cloud computing, using IFTTT as a platform to interact with a vast ecosystem of services and devices will increase the value of their products. However, there are also security concerns to consider: manufacturers that allow thirdparty services and devices to interact with or control devices through IFTTT opens the door to unforeseen vulnerabilities, since it’s difficult to predict how users will use their products. It also raises challenges is determining ownership of user data and liability. So, while it may be a short-term solution to increase product value through open platforms like IFTTT, manufacturers will still need to begin developing their own cloud platforms or risk becoming lowvalue brands and mere device manufacturers in a world where profit is increasingly generated by services, not to mention forfeiting all the valuable data.
Butterfleye: A Departure from Conventional Home Security Cameras Jason Lin / jason.yuchi.lin@gmail.com
Butterfleye is a 1080p wireless home camera set to launch in early 2015. Wireless cameras are a dime a dozen, so what is so special about this one? For one, it is truly wireless. Butterfleye uses a high-capacity rechargeable battery that can power the camera for up to two weeks. It achieves this through powerefficient software that records video only when necessary and
goes into standby mode when it is not needed. Compared to Dropcam and Dropcam-like cameras, Butterfleye brings portability to the table, enabling a number or interesting use cases. For example, it can be used to take selfies, or even keep an eye on children and pets to capture memorable moments. Just like many other home cameras, Butterfleye has multiple

essential sensors built-in, such as: - Motion and temperature sensors that help the camera differentiate between humans and pets - Face detection that is used to suggest images and videos worth sharing - A temperature sensor that detects changes in temperature and recognizes events like fires - Bluetooth LE (BLE) and WiFi is used to detect users’ location; it turns off when users are at home and activates when users leave - A built-in microphone detects sound and enables two-way audio, which has become a rather standard feature for home cameras The four main applications of smart home are securing, caring, sharing and communicating. Compared to Dropcam-like cameras that emphasize security, Butterfleye tries to tackle the other three: caring, sharing and communicating. Its truly cordless design also makes it a compelling product. With regard to integration with other smart home systems and wearable devices, the company says it is in the works. Butterfleye will be able to use BLE and WiFi to interact with products like the Pepple Smartwatch, Jawbone Jambox and some smart home lighting systems. Butterfleye is a departure from conventional security cameras. Unlike Dropcam and other popular home security cameras like Canary and Piper, Butterfleye’s cordless design enables true portability, which spawns a number of interesting use cases. That, in conjunction with intelligent use of sensors to collect and analyze usage data, as well as integration of edge recording software, might redefine the home camera as we know it.

Cracking down
hacks on camera
By Editorial Department
Recent reports on baby cam hacks raised new concerns over malicious intrusion into networked security devices. The threat is even more imminent for home and small business users who are not as well protected as their enterprise counterparts. Luckily for them, most of today’s network camera manufacturers work hard to keep flaws to a minimum and equip their products with various security features.

In fact, hacking can happen to not just cameras but also practically any device on the Internet. That danger is even more imminent for home and SMB users who, unlike their enterprise counterparts, are not protected by firewalls or advanced perimeter defense software. What they can do to protect themselves has therefore become an urgent issue. Luckily for them, today’s network camera makers work hard to minimize flaws and equip their products with various security features, which users should take advantage of to reduce the risk of these devices being hacked. “In

general it is not possible to guarantee that computers and network devices do not contain flaws that may be exploited for malicious attack. However, there are measures that can be taken in order to reduce the risk considerably and eliminate the obvious flaws,” said Fred Juhlin, Senior Consultant for Solution Management at Axis Communications, whose Companion series targets home and SMB users.
Access Unauthorized access to a system can be prevented by a simple yet effective method called password protection. Most network cameras today allow users to create their own usernames and passwords, which can be secured through various means. Zinwell, which makes power line-based home security cameras, has patented a technology that keeps passwords from being sent out to the Internet. “In that case, hackers won’t be able to get passwords from the Web,” said Ben Huang, Senior Marketing Supervisor at Zinwell. Encryption of passwords

is safe from any form of third-party manipulation,” Juhlin said.
Encryption
is another protection method. “The user has the option to let the system remember passwords, and if so the client protects the password with encryption,” said Juhlin. Once a user accesses the camera, it’s a good idea for the device to have multilevel access control based on the user’s privilege. For example, a regular user may only view streaming video, while an administrator may access the camera’s storage or control the device. In fact, most network cameras today offer this functionality. “This means users can control exactly who can see what in their system, and that their video
Set up strong passwords and change them regularly
Many IP cams also allow encryption. The videos can be encrypted before being sent over to the network to make sure that unauthorized persons cannot view or tamper with the data. Different encryption technologies are used. One of the most commonly used is SSL/TLS, which encrypts contents with special codes that can be deciphered only by pairs of public and private keys, the latter of which are hidden in the computers of the communicating parties. As private keys can be obtained in a security breach, Bosch, whose Advantage line also targets home and SMB users, makes sure that this will never happen. “The SSL private key of the device is stored securely on the smart card chip that is directly involved in the SSL connection setup. The private key never leaves the chip and cannot be read out even if the user has complete access to the device,” said Konrad Simon, Product Manager for IP Video at Bosch Security Systems. “This way no access is possible to the private key, even in a hostile approach someone would have achieved to read sensitive data from internal memory.” Advanced encryption standard (AES) is a protocol that encrypts contents with 128-bit, 192-bit,
Refrain from creating too many accounts that may be stolen Do not open suspicious links that may lead to the creation of backdoor accounts Limit access of device to only a few trusted IP addresses Isolate the device from the local network to avoid further intrusion
or 256-bit keys, making encoded messages harder to decipher by untrusted parties. Among camera makers that use AES is Amaryllo, another home security camera maker. It uses 256-bit encryption, at the same time ensuring that video latency is less than 0.5 seconds.
Keeping Flaws to a Minimum
Methods for secure IP cameras: • Conduct penetration tests before the release of a product to make sure it can withstand hacking. • Conduct source review on a regular basis to minimize the risk of intrusion. • Hold security training courses, taught by experienced intrusion defense experts, to discuss the latest security issues and raise product developers’ security awareness. • Create a network security department for safety-related inspections and review. • Be up-to-date with vulnerabilities on third-party software, like OpenSSL, to make sure that problematic software isn’t incorporated into a product. • Always provide security updates to users, instead of having them go to the vendor's website to find them.
Bowen Hsu, Security Researcher at Devcore indicated that vendors and software developers are generally unknowledgeable of the methods of intrusion. As an example, most cameras have web interfaces that set specific rules to thwart hackers’ efforts to inject malicious commands into the device. “Yet most of these defense mechanisms are at the client side and can easily be bypassed using certain proxy programs,” Hsu said. “If there isn’t a second line of defense at the camera side, there is a high possibility that intrusion into the camera will succeed.”

The methods of attack are everchanging, and manufacturers simply haven’t caught up with them. To keep exploitable flaws to a minimum, vendors who are security-minded keep checking third-party software regularly to make sure problematic software isn‘t incorporated into their products. As an example, to implement SSL encryption, many camera makers use OpenSSL, which drew huge attention in the security world in April when it was found it contained a bug called Heartbleed. Devices that are not properly and effectively patched against this flaw would be subject to a leak of vital and sensitive information — for example the customers’ usernames and passwords. A hacker who obtains that information could intrude into a camera and, at best, view videos streamed by it and, at worst, control and change contents in it.
One camera maker that managed to avert this disaster was Bosch. “We do not use OpenSSL as SSL implementation on our IP cameras, encoders, and decoders. The SSL implementation in our devices is not OpenSSL, nor is it related, so Heartbleed did not affect us at all,” Simon said. Crowdsourcing, where users in a community share their collective wisdom, is another way to identify flaws and get them fixed. “We monitor discussions in the network community to quickly identify possible vulnerabilities which may impact our products. If a vulnerability is discovered, we will provide patches, firmware, risk analysis, or recommendation to our customers,” Axis’s Juhlin said.
User Awareness While camera vendors may have included a range of security features
The easiest way to
in their devices, users should also do their part by taking advantage of these features. For example, it’s often the case that users simply use the camera maker’s default username and password settings, which are easily obtainable. Hsu indicated that many of them, for example, create weak passwords, ignore multilevel access control features, open up malicious web links allowing hackers to create a second administrator account, and neglect features that limit access to only trusted IP addresses. Protecting themselves against hackers therefore requires an increase in users’ alertness level, Hsu added. It is also important to check for notices on firmware updates or security patches, which are normally sent via e-mail. Moreover, users may consider isolating their cameras from a local network, since hackers may attack other devices in the network through the camera.

Current Smart Locks Still Need Smart Users {They Shouldn’t} By Editorial Department
The momentum of wireless locks is picking up in the residential sector as interest in smart homes and connected devices grows. Taking advantage of this are several companies who have announced or launched smart locks for home use. By appealing to consumers’ desire for convenience, mobility and automation, smart locks are making their home debut.
Smart locks that utilize mobile devices as keys may sound like a partial idea since physical keys are easily lost and copied. However, numerous security concerns regarding the automatic unlocking of doors and the risk of losing one’s phone, among others, make some consumers nervous. “In the residential sector, it’s more about local attitudes to keyless entry. Scandinavia and parts of Asia, in particular, have been early adopters of wireless entry systems,” said Chris Bone, VP of Access Control Solutions for EMEA at ASSA ABLOY. Choosing a smart lock first requires making some smart decisions. What type of deadbolt is already in place? Should the lock fit over an existing deadbolt or replace it? Certain solutions only work for single-cylinder deadbolts, so consumers will need to evaluate their current setup before making the plunge. For example, August Smart Lock can only be retrofitted onto a single-cylinder deadbolt—the most common type of deadbolt found in North America—and is not compatible with mortise or European-style cylinders. For
44 mySMAhome.com September/October 2014
those not in North America or have other types of deadbolts, offerings like Goji’s smart lock claim to fit most doors in the U.S. and Europe by replacing the existing deadbolt. Questions regarding whether a certain smart lock will fit an existing door can be directed to each individual company; potential buyers can send a photo of their existing deadbolt to the companies’ support teams, who will help assess the compatibility of their locks. Other things to consider when choosing a smart lock is the type of wireless communication protocol the lock uses. Popular communication protocols adopted by wireless locks include Bluetooth LE (BLE), NFC, WiFi, Z-Wave and ZigBee. Lock makers try to appeal to consumers by using protocols and standards that are widely supported by consumer electronics and smart home devices.
Safety first As with any new technology, concerns regarding the security and safety of smart locks have risen, causing some
consumers to think twice before they buy. For the most part, security does not seem to be a major concern for lock makers, who assure their products are secure. For example, Goji’s website states it implements bank-grade communication protocols and data security measures, which includes public/private key exchange, 256-bit encryption, and multiple layers of security. Similarly, August and Lockitron claim to use the same security protocols and robust encryption used in electronic banking. One particular security concern for many is, “What if a stranger comes to the door?” Will the door automatically unlock when a user approaches the door? For most smart locks, autounlock is optional, although it might be turned on by default. Regardless, few solutions can be effective if users are expected to remember to turn on the feature when they leave home and turn it off when they return. To address this problem, Kwikset Kevo, powered by UniKey, is equipped with patent-pending Inside/Outside Intelligence technology. This solution claims to be able to detect whether an authorized device is inside or outside the home—if the device is detected to be inside, the door will not unlock when a person tries to open the door from the outside. Other common questions such as “What if my phone battery dies?” and “What if I lose my phone?” are also causing consumer distress. Smart lock makers implement innovative solutions to allow users to access their accounts through other mobile devices or by calling a customer service line so they can deactivate lost keys. This is exactly the approach Goji plans to take: A simple phone call to Goji’s call center or logging into one’s account via another smartphone will allow a person to unlock the door or revoke the access rights of a lost phone.
Compatibility matters While sophisticated access control systems have been used by businesses
for a long time, they have been too expensive and complicated for most homeowners. These new smart locks target residential applications with innovative features and more approachable prices. As with any new technology, it will not be perfect at launch; lock makers need time to work out the kinks, such as compatibility issues. Fortunately, suppliers continue to enhance their products’ compatibility with third-party devices by supporting multiple communication protocols. For example, the Goji Smart Lock supports BLE and WiFi. Danish lock maker Poly-Control’s Danalock supports BLE and Z-wave. Kwikset Kevo, the first new-generation smart lock to hit the market, will gain in the near future Z-Wave and ZigBee compatibility. However, there is still much room for improvement when it comes to supporting older mobile devices. Lockitron claims to work with any smartphone, saying older phones can use Lockitron through text message commands; on the other hand, the product has been experiencing massive shipment delays due to manufacturing difficulties, so reviews regarding this functionality is sparse. Goji specifies compatibility with BLEenabled smartphones—including iPhone 4S and newer, and most new Android phones—which leaves many older smartphones out in the cold. Similarly, the Kwikset Kevo app is currently only available for Apple products, including iPhone 4S and newer, as well as newer generation of iPod Touch and iPad; however, an app for Android and Blackberry is underway. These issues won’t stop early adopters from trying out smart locks, but mass adoption can only begin after these issues have been addressed. R e g a rd l e s s , i n a w o r l d w h e re everything is getting smarter and convenience is becoming a standard, smart locks could be the next big thing in the not-so-distant future.
Four key communication standards for wireless locks WiFi WiFi locks utilize a user’s existing wireless network installation to communicate with the controlling software. Deployment of WiFi locks is easy for a user to do because there is very little infrastructure that would need to be added. The downside to WiFi locks is that it is a very power hungry protocol. This limits the frequency that the locks can communicate to the controlling software down to only a few times a day, in order to be able to maintain a reasonable battery life.
ZigBee This is a low-power wireless protocol that utilizes the same frequency range as WiFi. The protocol’s low-power consumption allows theses locks to communicate more often—as frequently as every minute—and maintain a reasonable battery life. The typical installation requires a receiver that will connect to a user’s Ethernet network to communicate back to controlling software. The downside is that not all ZigBee devices are interoperable.
Z-Wave Z-Wave is one of the most popular wireless communication protocols used in the residential market. Z-Wave enjoys support from consumers, particularly in the DIY segment. The interoperability of Z-Wave’s wide portfolio of vendor products gives consumers more choices regardless of the distribution channel or supplier.
Bluetooth LE Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) utilizes the same 2.4GHz frequency band as WiFi does. One drawback is that it is only supported by newer smartphones. BLE is available on iPhone 4S, which debuted in October 2011 and newer models, but is only available on Android 4.3 and later, which was only released in July 2013. Although Bluetooth LE is still quite a new communication protocol, it is the most widely used for smart locks. Famous brands like August, Goji, Kwikset Kevo and Lockitron all support BLE.

Y.K. Chen, director of new business development from Climax Technology
SHARES OF SERVICE EXPERIENCES Taipei’s seminar features three speakers from industryknown Taiwan manufacturers—Gemtek, Climax Technology, and STMicroelectrionics. Y.K. Chen, Director of new business development from Climax points out that, facing an international market blooming with opportunities and challenges, Taiwanese makers need to deal with one of the major weakness, lack of user experiences. It is a big challenge when it comes into home domain. Another challenge is the integration. With new comers joining in the market, integration is the key to success. On top of these, the core thinking needs to be shifted from a hardware manufacturer to a service provider. Facing keen price competition in hardware manufacturing, Kevin Yang, Exec. Board of Director of Gemtek suggested that the future competitiveness relies on software development capability and cloud services instead of offering merely hardware solutions, especially for the smart home industry. He believes services will lead the development of hardware in coming years. Hardware devices cannot control the smart home, but softwares and services will do. Being a service provider will be more competitive, added Yang. In Shenzhen, however, Ken Li reflected the importance of manufacturers’ interaction and exchanging ideas. “The smart home market has been more and more customer-electronic-like. Despite the fierce competition, this market has been offering a valuable chance for Chinese manufacturers to build the brand business in the worldwide market. It is very important to gain the users’ feedbacks to improve the product design on every occasion.”

Gemtek: Service leads hardware development
Gemtek, a leading hardware manufacturer of telecom and wireless broadband solutions, has been shifting its role in the smart home industry from a hardware supplier to software and service provider.
Submitted by Weili Lin
The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected reinvent the world. However, the gap between various hardware offerings has narrowed in both network communication and smart home industries, making it increasingly difficult for device makers to differentiate products solely through hardware improvements. Cloud services have become the next frontier. Gemtek believes software and services will take the lead role in the coming years, shaping the development of hardware. Kevin Yang, Executive Board of Director of Gemtek, believes that maintaining competitiveness in the space will rely on the ability to develop reliable and innovative software solutions and cloud services, rather than merely offering hardware solutions. This will be especially evident in the smart home industry. “Hardware devices by themselves cannot control the smart home—software and services do,” Yang said. He thinks each connected device is itself a small gateway that links to other devices, and smart home will be integrated and controlled by cloud platforms, not a single home gateway. The company predicted this trend eight years ago and began to develop its cloud services. Today, the company helps its customers develop, deploy, maintain and operate cloud platforms.
For hardware, it’s all downhill from here Hardware devices by themselves cannot control the smart home— software and services do.
While Taiwan companies are best known for their manufacturing prowess, it is not enough to stay relevant in today’s and tomorrow’s smart home market. Yang believes offering total solutions that integrate hardware, software and cloud services will help them stay competitive in an increasingly crowded market. He also sees hardware makers like lock manufacturers struggling to become service providers to establish value-added business models and increase recurring revenue. As increased competition and aggressive pricing strategies continue to reduce
48 mySMAhome.com September/October 2014
profitability for hardware manufacturers, becoming a service provider is one way to stay ahead of the game. The smart home market is fragmented in Taiwan in terms of hardware supply; to capture significant market share, integrating services and hardware is a key for future growth. When it comes to the smart home industry, Taiwan makers need to realize that hardware is simply not enough. “Companies that emphasize hardware manufacturing are seeing their share prices continuously decline. In contrast, those focusing on software and services, such as Amazon and Google, see better stock performance,” Yang said.
Gemtek forming a strong smart home lineup Gemtek’s revenue is generated from three sources: hardware manufacturing, software and cloud service solutions, and maintenance and operation of cloud platforms. Gemtek offers both software services and hardware products, such as network cameras, smart plugs and irrigation systems. Network cameras and smart plugs are the company’s two largest smart home product lines. Yang indicates that single-purpose standalone DIY products sold in retail channels currently lead the smart home market in terms of sales volume. As for software and cloud services, Gemtek offers integration services to smart home device manufacturers who need to deliver customized cloud services to their customers, but do not have the know-how or resources to build their own clouds. For example, one of Gemtek’s cloud service solution targets companies that develop Internet-connected doorbells or doorphones. These companies can integrate Gemtek’s solution to allow users to receive notifications on their smartphones and grant access remotely. Gemtek also provides an SDK (Software Development Kit) and APIs (Application Programming Interface) that make the integration process easier and quicker.

Comcast has acquired PowerCloud Systems, parent company to Skydog, developers of monitoring software for Wi-Fi management and manufacturers of router hardware to implement these solutions. Comcast is expecting to deploy this technology in 2015, though no details have been released. This acquisition for Comcast clearly points to a strategy incorporating Smart Home functionality into the XFinity platform. Skydog had produced proprietary routers for its Wi-Fi management software, and though it has promised to honor support for three years, it is no longer pursuing this business model under Comcast. These routers are equipped with 802.11n Wi-Fi functionality, though 802.11ac will likely be the next specification utilized by Comcast. While it is possible that Comcast will keep this as an in-house technology, it is most likely that Comcast intends to incorporate it into the Reference Design Kit (RDK) software platform, and make it available to other RDK licensees. RDK Management LLC, a joint venture between Comcast Cable, Liberty Global and Time Warner Cable, has more than 140 licensees. The scalability of such a technology through three of the largest cable companies on the planet, as well as through all licensees, allows the software platform a massive potential market.

Lowe's Survey: Americans' attitudes on the smart home Lowe's 2014 Smart Home Survey examined Americans' attitudes and experiences with home automation, with a particular look at the most important features and top reasons for owning smart home products. The data reveals that a majority of Americans are generally favorable to smart homes, with 50 percent preferring do-it-yourself solutions, and nearly two-thirds (62 percent) find the smart home most beneficial for monitoring safety and security. The Smart Home Survey, conducted online in July by Harris Poll on behalf of Lowe's, polled more than 2,000 U.S. adults aged 18+ and finds that 52 percent of Americans feel that having
a smart home is at least somewhat important to them. When it comes to purchasing consideration, more than half (56 percent) of Americans cite either cost or fees as the most important deciding factor (31 percent say monthly fee amount and 26 percent say the cost of equipment), followed by ease of use (13 percent) and security (11 percent). In addition to citing overall cost as the most important factor in the purchasing decision of smart home products, Americans are more than twice as likely to prefer a DIY solution without a monthly fee over a professional installed/monitored system with a monthly service fee (50 percent vs. 21 percent).

Wireless LED light bulbs will be widespread in American homes within the next five years, according to global technology research firm ON World. The report indicates Reliability has become the number one smart home concern for consumers and ZigBee and the upcoming Thread protocol both provide reliable wireless mesh networking solutions. A third of likely smart home purchasers are interested in buying wireless LED light bulbs. Moreover, 48% are willing to pay $10 or more for a smart wireless LED light bulb and 26% will pay $20 or more. As an alternative to paying upfront, 44% of the respondents would spend $5 per month on an LED lighting control system service and 22% are willing to spend $15 or more per month. Reliability is the most important smart home sensing and control system feature selected by over half of the likely adopters.
While a small segment of consumers have long been interested in home automation, only recently has a confluence of new technologies set the stage for broader interest in a new, more expansive smart home. The fastest growing part of this new smart home market is the do-it-yourself (DIY) segment, fueled by a wave of new products that consumers buy, install and manage by themselves. NextMarket forecasts the DIY smart home to reach $7.8 billion in the US by 2019. While much of the industry interest in smart home has been centered around managed offerings from service providers, many consumers are first exposed to the smart home through selfinstallable point products such as smart thermostats, smart locks, and smart lighting. Others are experimenting with self-installable smart home systems that connect multiple products.

Mark Walters, Chairman of the Z-Wave Alliance sees Z-Wave's growing retail presence organically building the technology's brand-name recognition. "Consumers have started asking for Z-Wave by name, and increasingly associate Z-Wave with smart devices, the way that Intel was associated with PCs in their era," he says. We expect that Z-Wave, based on its performance, features, and wide range of choices, will continue to be the name they look for."
