EDITOR’S NOTE In Addition to AI, Blockchain Will Be Another Game Changer Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are now pushing video analytics in smart cameras to another level. The immense volumes of video content provide AI and ML a good environment to grow in video surveillance applications. However, video surveillance systems can’t be silos that operate separately from other connected systems. One main issue in IoT development is how big data can be made available. This same situation also applies to the video surveillance industry, especially when we talk about how to share the video content from different stakeholders. Forrester, a research group, found that on average 60 to 73 percent of data within an enterprise goes unused for business intelligence (BI) and analytics. This means that if the boundaries of using and acquiring data can be overcome and the process be made autonomous, organizations can achieve the ultimate performance of BI. That is why “blockchain” has also become another spotlight for many different verticals. Blockchain can make the exchange of data more democratic. It is expected that its decentralized approach can break down the silos that limit access to useful data. While everyone is focusing on AI development, blockchain-driven technologies shouldn’t be ignored either.

Based on the turnout at Secutech Thailand, we can definitely see that the country’s security industry is booming. Strategically located in the heart of the region, Thailand is expecting growth in both government spending and private investment. At the same time, new constructions coupled with smart city initiatives will further drive demand. Indeed, Thailand’s security industry is viewed with upbeat and optimistic sentiment.

The industry is all abuzz, making preparations and changes in light of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that is coming into effect in May 2018. It is only a matter of time that similar strict measures will be implemented (in varying degrees) in Asia as well, prompted by the growing need to protect data and privacy in the age of IoT.

Bosch Opens First Smart Factory in Thailand Bosch is opening a smart factory in Hemaraj, Thailand, the first in the country. Between 2015 and the end of 2017, the company will have invested a total of US$96 million in the new smart factory that focuses heavily on connected manufacturing.

hailand’s automotive market is booming: in 2016, nearly two million cars were manufactured there, significantly more than in the U.K. or Italy. Bosch is responding to this rising demand. Following a one-and-a-half-year construction phase, the company is opening a new plant for injection technology in Hemaraj, 130 kilometers east of Thailand’s capital Bangkok. It is the first smart factory in Thailand, and the second Bosch Mobility Solutions plant there. Prior to the opening ceremony, Peter Tyroller, the member of the Bosch board of management responsible for Asia Pacific, said, “Localization

is a top priority at Bosch. The new plant will enable us to respond to growing automobile production in Thailand and to serve international as well as local automotive customers on the spot.” The supplier of technology and services is focusing heavily on connected manufacturing at the new factory. Between 2015 and the end of 2017, Bosch will have invested some US$96 million in total in the new smart factory in Thailand.

Bosch Industry 4.0 and R&D Activities Debut in Thailand

In a facility covering 10,000 square meters, injection valves, connection technology, knock sensors and other components roll off the production line. Using an “active cockpit,” manufacturing associates analyze the latest production data. This Industry 4.0 solution brings together a wide range of information in real time and helps increase competitiveness. The new location in Hemaraj also includes a research and development center, where some 60 associates work on the further development of gasoline injection systems. “It is our first R&D center in the country, and we are especially

proud of this,” Tyroller said. He added that the country is a gateway to Southeast Asia as a business location, underscoring Thailand’s strategic importance fo r t h e B o s c h G ro u p i n Southeast Asia and worldwide. By 2020, it will create 800 new jobs in total in Hemaraj — 300 associates are already employed there. Bosch’s total workforce in Thailand currently stands at 1,350 associates.

Expansion of Manufacturing in Vietnam

In the year ahead, Bosch plans to expand its manufacturing activities in Vietnam as well. Since 2008, Bosch

percent drop in the number of crimes in our city,” said Dipankar Trivedi, Superintendent of Police in Bhavnagar. That’s because officers now monitor 155 cameras from a central control room using Genetec Security Center. The solution provides a birds-eye-view of the city’s roadways, attractions, entry points, transportation hubs and other important sites. Such transmissions work without any fixed shifting points, ensuring a smooth ride. Demand in Asian cities is rising more and more, as this kind of transmission is suited to stop-and-go traffic. Its compact design also means that it fits into small urban vehicles. “We are investing some $72 million to convert the Dong Nai plant into a smart factory and increase capacity,” said Tyroller. Over the past 10 years, Bosch has experienced strong growth in Vietnam. Although present in Vietnam since 1994, the company did not open its first branch operation in Ho Chi Minh City until early 2008. In 2010, it became the site of the company’s first software development center in Southeast Asia. In July 2014, an additional automotive engineering center followed. The plant in Dong Nai manufactured its 20 millionth pushbelt in March

of this year. The location also includes a vocational training center for technical trades, modeled on Germany’s dual education system. Bosch employs more than 3,100 associates in Vietnam, more than 40 percent of whom are researchers and engineers.

This growth in the manufacturing, tourism and transportation sectors are all strong drivers for the country’s security market, and many of the players we talked to are optimistic about the market’s continued growth in 2018.

The proliferation of ADAS is expected to boost the installation of sensors and cameras. However, this is also challenging systems to promptly understand and analyze the massive amounts of raw and unorganized data being collected in this dynamic traffic environment. Jeremy Carlson, Principal Analyst of Autonomous Driving and Mobility at IHS Markit, indicated that machine learning can make that process more efficient, thereby facili-

tating faster development and deployment of the technologies to consumers on the road. Jeff VanWashenova, Automotive Segment Marketing Director at CEVA, said, ”It is expected that more and more vehicles will have standard rear back up cameras, front cameras for collision avoidance, and even replacing rear view and side view mirrors with cameras. These sensors need to be able to improve image quality and add additional analytics like object detection and identification.” He believes machine learning can help improve both accuracy and speed at which these systems can identify objects.

ADAS can become a thinking machine with human-like intelligence. Preyss indicated that machine learning can leverage vehicle sensors and map data to provide context to the vehicles environment for better and more proactive decisions. “Learning the behavior of the driver can help to enhance the execution of ADAS features,” he added.

Enhancement from Machine Learning Machine learning helps ADAS to detect and recognize objects with improved accuracy and reliability. The technology is known for its excellent performance in image classification that can distinguish objects like

pedestrians, bicycles or vehicles. Also, the machine learning algorithm can help ADAS recognize road signs more precisely like speed limit recognition. This is gaining traction in ADAS applications due to continuous developments and improvements in machine learning algorithms. Aish Dubey, ADAS Business Manager for Texas Instruments (TI), indicated that the accuracy of machine learning algorithms has improved quite a bit in the last three years. he evolution of smart technology over the past few years has transcended every industry. A few years ago smart locks were a new idea, an idea that seemed more about hype than true functionality. At the time many of the players consisted of startups like August Smart Lock and Danalock. Since then August has been acquired by ASSA ABLOY, while Salto Systems purchased a significant equity share in Danalock. Interest and investments by such key players in the access control community represent the growing popularity and potential of smart lock systems.

The convenience of not needing to worry about a physical key required by traditional locks is one of the many benefits of smart locks. Businesses such as Amazon are taking advantage of this fact. The recently launched Amazon Key system is taking the convenience of smart locks to a new level, allowing for in-home deliveries of goods by giving home access to Amazon delivery personnel via the Amazon Key app and one of several compatible smart locks by Yale and Kwikset. While this concept does not come without challenges and concerns, it is taking full advantage of the potential smart locks have to offer. In fact, a recent report by Research and Markets shows that the smart lock market is rapidly growing. The market is expected to reach US$2.7 billion by 2023 from $1.3 billion in 2017, at a CAGR of 13.1 percent during the projected period. Market growth is attributed to the rising adoption of smartphones and other connected devices. Additional growth drivers include growing concerns regarding security and safety, as well as enhanced features compared to traditional lock systems.

Not Without Concerns When smart locks first came out security was a main concern; however, smart lock technology has advanced and so has its security protocols. Users, though, are still weary of security vulnerabilities. Locks, by nature, are meant to keep out unwanted intruders, so if a smart lock were to be hacked, the whole purpose of the lock is moot. Residential consumers in particular have concerns with the ability to use alternative ways to open smart locks, for example, if they do not have their smartphones available, according to Todd Graves, SVP of Engineering and Technology at Allegion. Omer Sagi, Business Development Director at ASSA ABLOY EMEA, noted that the biggest concern users have relate to the security and reliability of a smart door

lock. “We often field questions such as: What happens if I forget to replace the batteries? Or how can you be sure both the mechanical side and the electronics in your lock are secure?” he said. “ASSA ABLOY’s smart door lock range is built around our most secure mechanical cylinders — many of which are already deployed in homes and sensitive commercial premises all over the world. Furthermore, we test all our ‘smart’ products internally, and also hire external experts to perform rigorous independent checks. All our smart devices meet or exceed local and global security standards — and we’re always investing to make them even better,” Sagi said. While security is a key concern, cost, particularly among commercial users, is also a hurdle. “Commercial end users are sometimes initially concerned about the higher acquisition cost of the lock itself compared to a simple mechanical lock,” Graves said. “But once they see the life cycle cost benefits of smart locks, and the operating efficiencies they provide, these concerns usually go away.”

Smart Lock Benefits Concerns aside, smart locks offer a new type of convenience to both residential and non-residential users. Smart locks allow users to control their access from anywhere in the world. In a residential setting this means the ability to share access with family members, visitors or even service providers. “You can let your kids in if they come home early, or issue a temporary or time-limited key to a petsitter or a carer, just to mention a couple of useful everyday scenarios. Smart door locks are also enabling an exciting range of new domestic services. For example, in-home parcel delivery even while you’re out, or the ability to manage your property (or a number of properties) through short-term rental platforms like Airbnb. We’re just at the start of major change in domestic security, with smart door locks at the heart of it,” Sagi said.

“With a traditional mechanical lock, the only choice is to give someone a key, so withdrawing access, or limiting it to a certain time period, is a challenge. And if a key is lost, the lock needs to be re-keyed,” Graves explained. Smart locks, however, allow for access to be granted and withdrawn at any time. For non-residential customers, smart locks could provide enormous productivity benefits. “There is no master key that can be lost, and when employees or tenants leave, access rights can be withdrawn immediately. With a traditional mechanical system, keys have to be collected from departing employees. And if a master key is lost or stolen, every lock has to be re-keyed,” Graves said. Hanspeter Seiss, Product Manager of AirKey at EVVA, explained how smart locks such as EVVA’s AirKey could benefit non-residential environments such as shared offices. “In this process, participants share facilities and costs. They also enhance their horizons beyond their own businesses, recommend customers and link otherwise unrelated subjects to each other. The locking system in said office communities must be as flexible as the shared office concept itself. Different access authorizations, simple application and guaranteed maximum security with regard to access from the outside, but also amongst shared office members. This is where AirKey comes in.”

Choosing a Communications Protocol Integration was a big concern when smart locks first came out. With a number of communications protocols on the market and the desire to integrate smart locks into a larger smart home system, which protocol(s) locks use is an important consideration. There are a few main wireless communications protocols being used in smart locks: Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee and Z-Wave. Among these Thread is the newest, developed by a group of companies,

Local mandatory requirements are helping to boost the number of installations. Thomas Lausten, CEO at Mobotix, said, “As of yet, there is no U.S.- or EU-wide mandated requirement that video surveillance (CCTV) be installed on buses, although a number of large cities insist on that for bus services to receive a license to operate.” In some regions, bus operators need to follow the regulations or guidelines before receiving a license to operate. Lausten said that Transport for London, a local government body, stipulates a minimum monitoring requirement for the most transited or vulnerable areas on buses, such as the back-row seating area. He added, “The rules insist that all cameras are permanently on when the bus is in service. The retention and management of the data is left as the responsibility of the operator in accordance with local data protection and privacy laws.” Requirements regarding video footage retention periods may also vary, with some local governments mandating a few weeks. Daniel Yu, Mobile Solution Manager at Hikvision Digital Technology, said that the Government of Florida requires all transport vehicles to follow a 30-day minimum video retention period.

New approaches to mobile surveillance emerging for fleet vehicles are expected to render today’s systems obsolete. “We will see operators moving towards a holistic approach that encompasses the whole fleet in order to improve efficiencies. Hypothetically, this could include a bus operator using cameras for traffic monitoring on the road, which then informs other drivers of any incidents that may cause delays and offers them an alternative route.”

earable technology usually conjures up images of fitness trackers and smartwatches, but nowadays with their enormous popularity they are being used for safety and security as well. Wearables have become so popular that research firm Gartner forecasts that 310.4 million wearable devices will be sold in 2017, generating US$30.5 billion. This is a 16.7-percent increase from 2016. The vast majority of sales will come from smartwatches and wristbands; however, sales of body worn cameras (BWC) are expected to increase rapidly over the next five years — from just over 1 million in 2017 to over 5.6 million in

2021. When it comes to safety and security, the most notable wearable is body worn cameras, commonly used in law enforcement. Companies focused on lone worker solutions, though, are developing different types of wearables to help employers keep lone worker safe. Lone workers operate in a countless number and variety of industries, from civil enforcement to critical

infrastructure to social care. They work in all types of environments from crowded urban areas to remote oil fields. Regardless of who and where, as the name implies, lone workers are on their own, needing to be largely self-sufficient — with wearables they don’t have to be.

Concerns About Safety Among the most common concerns employers have for

its lone workers are injury and violence. There are of course laws and regulations to help minimize the possibility of such events, but oftentimes they are vague and difficult to implement. One example is the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1970 under OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) in the U.S. The Act includes a “working alone” section, but the language is vague and does not provide any clear

guidelines for employers. As such, employers and companies that provide lone worker solutions must be proactive in implementing their own guidelines to protect workers. Among the biggest concern employers have when it comes to safety is violence and aggression toward these workers. “Lone workers must enter various environments where the risk of encountering aggressive members of the public is significantly

increased,” said Richie McBride, MD of Edesix. “One survey, conducted by the Royal College of Nursing, found that nearly 40 percent of respondents had been harassed or assaulted while at work in the last year. Without support from colleagues or sufficient emergency processes, lone workers can quickly find themselves in the middle of a potentially dangerous situation.” Injury is another concern for lone workers. Without help around or nearby, injury of a lone worker on the job could lead to death. Even with lone worker solutions in place, there is no guarantee of safety especially if the solution is not being properly monitored. This was the case in 2013 when a water tank worker drowned in the U.K. Even after activating his lone worker alarm after his fall, the company did not respond until four hours later, which by then was too late. Events such as this only highlight the importance of having proper procedures in place and the need for conducting thorough risk assessment.

Additional user requirements include the need for discreet devices, for public facing roles where an aggressor is becoming abusive/violent; man-down or fall-down alarm functionality, which automatically raises the alarm if someone slips or is knocked unconscious; a greater degree of management and usage reports, and the ability to configure devices and update user profiles via online client administration portal; and devices which can be used easily with little or no training, according to Murray. mart lighting can potentially bring much convenience. People love being able to walk into the house late at night where the lights automatically turn on, or walk into the entryway with arms full of groceries without having to flip the light

There are challenges, however. Upfront cost and installation work are the main hurdles for greater adoption. Oftentimes a gateway is required to relay signals of various communication protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave and Wi-Fi. Signal transmission could be unstable and may lead to system breakdown. “The smart home space can still be confusing. Consumers want devices that are interoperable and allow them to connect features together vs. having many different standalone devices with individualized offerings,” said Tom Stimac, Chief Innovation Manager of GE Lighting. “They also hope for connected experiences that are easy and where there is little to

Bluetooth mesh networking is ideal for this type of deployment. The technology will lower the hurdles of smart lighting adoption, namely higher costs and complex installation, Shiu said. “Bluetooth can cut down hardware and maintenance expenses.”
