EDITOR’S NOTE In 2018, Data Protection Issue Rises In the physical security world, artificial intelligence (AI) — more precisely called “advanced video analytics” in this context — is often mentioned as the key technology that will push future market demand. The whole industry is very excited about that. However, when we deal with AI, the legitimacy of the act of acquiring data can’t be ignored. In May 2018, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), is set to be implemented. All businesses will need to be compliant with this regulation in order to better protect the personal data of people in the EU. The regulation is quite strict and specific in terms of protecting data and gaining consent before any data can be used. To prepare for compliance to this new regulation, security system designs will need to be changed or upgraded. Meanwhile, owners of the data will also need to make sure their data is well protected from cyberattacks. Some experts suggest that working with an approved cloud service provider is probably a good shortcut to ensure compliance. The regulation will first be initiated in the EU; however, it will influence all companies that do business in countries belonging to the whole European Union or even international ones. We have included a special feature in this issue for our Middle Eastern readers. a&s will be at Intersec 2018, we hope to talk to you there!

ADT Acquires DATASHIELD to Launch “ADT Cybersecurity” ADT Cybersecurity is positioned to provide organizations with managed detection and response (MDR) services to combat advanced cyberthreats, which have become a serious concern for businesses of all sizes. BY ADT
A
D T, a provider of security and automation solutions for homes and businesses in North America, announced the acquisition close of DATASHIELD, one of the U.S.’s fastest growing cybersecurity companies. Now operating under the brand ADT Cybersecurity, this service is uniquely positioned to provide enterprise and mid-market businesses with managed detection and response (MDR) services to combat advanced cyberthreats in real time. DATASHIELD CEO Michael Malone will join the ADT team as Senior VP at ADT Cybersecurity, reporting directly to Timothy Whall, CEO of ADT. The security gap is widening as advanced threats continue to bypass the first line of defense, and many organizations are struggling to deploy, manage and use an effective combination of expertise and tools to detect advanced cyberthreats. Mid-market and enterprise organizations are increasingly finding the need for 24/7 managed and monitored cyber solutions to help detect and respond to cyberattacks. It is estimated that by 2020, approximately 20 percent of mid-market and enterprise organizations will be using MDR services such as ADT Cybersecurity, up from less
than 1 percent in 2016. DATASHIELD, now ADT Cybersecurity, is the only MDR provider to offer full packet capture and inspection beyond headers and metadata behind the firewall. ADT Commercial and National Account customers who look to add ADT Cybersecurity services will also have access to SHIELDVision, a unified platform for organizing, managing and collecting cyber intelligence. SHIELDVision automates security analyst workflows to close the gap between cyberattacks and breach detection times and remediation for customers. Data breaches caused by cyberattacks on networks are plaguing businesses of all sizes. This year could set another record for the number and severity of data breaches after record years in 2015 and 2016. The median time of compromise to discovery is a staggering 80 days with the average cost of data breach costing organizations US$3.6 million. “Our goal is to provide ADT customers with the most comprehensive security solution to protect their business, and in today’s world, this not only means their physical premise, but also their network,” said Whall. “For more than 143 years, ADT has been monitoring physical properties,
“The security gap is widening as advanced threats continue to bypass the first line of defense.” and DATASHIELD will now allow us to extend that same level of security monitoring to the digital world. Michael and his team will infuse cybersecurity DNA into our core business, allowing us to provide an offering that will distinguish our brand as the premiere resource for end-to-end security.” “The standard approach to cybersecurity was not designed to provide rapid response,” said Michael Malone, CEO of DATASHIELD. “This is a landmark opportunity to combine the brand and reach of ADT, with the technology and innovation of DATASHIELD to establish the new standard in the most comprehensive digital protection for mid-market and enterprise businesses.”

Preparation Tips for Physical Security Users Ahead of GDPR Entities using video surveillance, access control and other physical security systems should heed the impact of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) taking effect next year and act accordingly. BY William Pao
W
ith the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) taking effect next year, many end-user organizations in Europe are taking steps to prepare. In a similar vein, entities using video surveillance, access control and other physical security systems should also be aware of the impact that GDPR will have on them. That was the argument made by Jean-Philippe Deby, Business Development Director for Europe at Genetec, in a recent posting to the web portal GDPR Report. The GDPR website states that the EU GDPR replaces the Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC and was designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, protect and empower all EU citizens and reshape the way organizations across the region approach data privacy. Fines will be incurred for entities that fail to comply. Preparation Tips According to Deby, operators could do the following to get themselves prepared in the lead-up to the GDPR’s enforcement. 1. Get involved and start evaluating your current systems: According to Deby, users who have not been invited into a GDPR discussion should proactively initiate one with their legal team and ask for guidance. “Conduct a gap analysis to identify
what works and what might require improvement in accordance with the new regulation. Then engage your consultants, integrators and manufacturers who should be able to advise on appropriate solutions,” he said. 2. Adopt privacy by design: Citing the terms of GDPR, Deby mentioned data that is anonymized or pseudonymized is likely to be low-risk. The appropriate use of encryption and automated privacy tools is therefore a logical step; for example, video redaction that blurs out people’s faces in video unless there is a legitimate reason to reveal their identity can minimize the dangers of having security cameras deployed in public spaces, Deby said. 3. Consider cloud-based services as a shortcut to compliance: According to Deby, owners of on-premises video surveillance, access control or license plate recognition (LPR) systems are responsible for all aspects of GDPR compliance, including securing access to the systems and servers storing the information. He said that by working with an approved cloud provider it is possible to offload some of these responsibilities.

rbanization is an inherent part of economic development. As more people move into cities, more cars are also on the streets, increasing the risk of traffic accidents. The incidence of which not only poses a huge consequence on human lives, but also a burden on a country’s health, insurance and legal systems. This inadvertently takes a huge toll on the country’s economy as well, typically costing countries 3 percent of their gross domestic product (or up to 5 percent in low- and middle-income countries) as stated by a report by the World Health Organization (WHO). Due to these widespread adverse implications, countries are now waking up to the importance of improving road safety and are making it a high priority in their development agenda. This holds particularly true for the Middle East region. In previous years, this part of the world has been listed as having the second highest road traffic fatality rate in the world after Africa, with reports stating that car accidents are the leading cause of mortality among the younger population. A WHO report classified most of the East Mediterranean countries as having poor traffic data collection and accuracy, another even ranked the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) 23rd globally in terms of deaths due to road accidents. verall, the Middle East security market is viewed with optimism and upbeat sentiment, recovering from a lull over the past few years. Take the video surveillance industry, for example. According to 6Wresearch, the video surveillance market of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) bloc, consisted of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10 percent from 2017 to 2023 after a decline in demand over the last two years predominantly due to falling oil prices which impacted overall government spending toward various infrastructure projects. A separate market research by Frost and Sullivan, meanwhile, points out overall, the Middle East electronic security market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16.5 percent between 2017
and 2022, from US$2.6 billion in 2017 to $5.6 billion in 2022. According to the same study, by segment under electronic security, video surveillance is anticipated to grow from $2 billion in 2017 to $4.5 billion in 2022 with a CAGR of 17.4 percent; access control from $38 million to $74 million with a CAGR of 14.5 percent; and intrusion detection from $24 million to $43 million with a CAGR of 12.2 percent. The survey results were largely confirmed by security players, who said overall, 2017 went favorably. “We had seen a big business growth in 2017 in the Middle East market, due to big demand on the new ongoing construction projects, for example offices, government buildings, hospitals and hotels,” said Mohamed El Shenawy, Reginal Sales Director at Suprema. “With security threats increasing plus the many construction projects that are happening in the region, there has been a

Another year has gone by. As we bid farewell to 2017, it’s time to review some of the events and happenings in security this year. It was a growth year indeed, with Memoori pointing the total value of physical security products at factory gate prices in 2017 was US$29.2 billion, an increase of approximately 5 percent on 2016. Terrorist incidents like those in London earlier this year and in New York later this year have made us all the more aware of the indispensable role that security plays in our lives. But at the same time, the conversation in the industry has shifted from standalone products to smart solutions that help users secure as well as achieve tangible business outcomes. While different regions in the world are set apart by different characteristics and needs, it can be said that the outlook for the industry remains upbeat in 2018 and in subsequent years. and technology advancements. Asia is characterized by safe city and smart city initiatives. Europe, meanwhile, is bracing themselves for the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May 2018.
North America I n terms of the mark et, Nor th America had a size of US$25.9 billion in 2016, and the figure is forecast to grow to $43.4 billion by 2021 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.8 percent, according to MarketsandMarkets. This trend is confirmed by security players as they expressed upbeat sentiment about the North American market. Terrorism and other physical threats continue to be a main driver. Two recent attacks in New York, one with a man allegedly running people over with a pickup truck and the other with a man detonating a bomb strapped to his body, all emphasized the importance of keeping people and assets from harm’s way. At the same time, cybersecurity has gained equal attention amid increased cyberattacks against end-user organizations. Another growth driver is the need for compliance. Some examples include standards formulated by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulating the utility
industry, and the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) ensuring that all companies that accept, process, store or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment. These regulations force end-user organizations to purchase and invest in security. “Regulatory compliance is one of the most significant drivers in these verticals. Customers are looking to comply with state, local and federal regulations, and to do so, they are investing heavily in security technologies,” said Tony Varco, VP of Security at Convergint Technologies. “In hospitality specifically, there has been an uptick in the necessity of security systems both for surveillance purposes, as well as for staff safety. Several states have implemented new laws which require hotels to provide their staff with panic buttons, to ensure their safety as they service guestrooms,” said Bill Lally, President of Mode:Green.
Prevailing Technologies Some of the prevailing technology seen this year and going into next year include the use of cloud for on-premise and off-premise security management, the popularity of subscription-based ser vice, the deployment of virtual security operation centers, and the H.265 compression technology to optimize transmission of ultra high-definition video. Meanwhile, organizations using security for non-security applications have become more common, thanks to data,

analytics and interoperability between systems. “Security devices can be incorporated into an automation system in a hotel or restaurant environment to simplify operations. By combining the security features into the same interface where the energy, lighting or entertainment devices are managed, staff can more easily utilize both systems, or they could be coordinated to interact,” Lally said. “A singular interface optimizes the investment and ensures that the systems will be fully used, as well as providing these additional benefits.” “We recently provided an airline with a solution involving several hundred cameras, and I was very surprised to find that those cameras were being used for purposes beyond just physical security. They were being used, in combination with analytics, for training purposes, tarmac safety, and customer service. These uses go above and beyond traditional physical security,” Varco said. “This is about helping customers create business outcomes. Once you have the data from these systems, what do you do with that data? What problems do you solve? Focusing on those business outcomes provides customers with a return on investment.”
is the issue of commoditization. With camera prices falling lower and lower, selling a solution rather than a product has become the only way to go. “If you look at trends within camera pricing, what we have to address is how to respond to commoditization. Convergint’s approach to that is a significant focus on higher-level advanced solutions and professional services,” Varco said. “We don’t talk about selling cameras to customers. We talk about selling compliance, selling risk mitigation, and selling solutions. It’s important to move away from selling commodities and move into providing enterprise-level solutions.” As for next year, growth is expected to continue in North America as the market influencers found in 2017 will remain in place. “We’re blessed to be in this industry. The security industry overall is absolutely incredible,” Varco said. “We’re experiencing double-digit growth, and we see the outlook, not only for 2018 but well into the future, to be positive, both within North America and globally.”

The market is expected to reach US$2.7 billion by 2023 from $1.3 billion in 2017, at a CAGR of 13.1 percent during the projected period. Market growth is attributed to the rising adoption of smartphones and other connected devices. Additional growth drivers include growing concerns regarding security and safety, as well as enhanced features compared to traditional lock systems.

The recently launched Amazon Key system is taking the convenience of smart locks to a new level, allowing for in-home deliveries of goods by giving home access to Amazon delivery personnel via the Amazon Key app and one of several compatible smart locks by Yale and Kwikset. While this concept does not come without challenges and
When smart locks first came out security was a main concern; however, smart lock technology has advanced and so has its security protocols. Users, though, are still weary of security vulnerabilities. Locks, by nature, are meant to keep out unwanted intruders, so if a smart lock were to be hacked, the whole purpose of the lock is moot. Residential consumers in particular have concerns with the ability to use alternative ways to open smart locks, for example, if they do not have their smartphones available, according to Todd Graves, SVP of Engineering and Technology at Allegion. Omer Sagi, Business Development Director at ASSA ABLOY EMEA, noted that the biggest concern users have relate to the security and reliability of a smart door lock. “We often field questions such as: What happens if I forget to replace the batteries? Or how can you be sure both the mechanical side and the electronics in your lock are secure?” he said. “ASSA ABLOY’s smart door lock range is built around our most secure mechanical cylinders — many of which are already deployed in homes and sensitive commercial premises all over the world. Furthermore, we test all our ‘smart’ products internally, and also hire external experts to perform rigorous independent checks. All our smart devices meet
or exceed local and global security standards — and we’re always investing to make them even better,” Sagi said. While security is a key concern, cost, particularly among commercial users, is also a hurdle. “Commercial end users are sometimes initially concerned about the higher acquisition cost of the lock itself compared to a simple mechanical lock,” Graves said. “But once they see the life cycle cost benefits of smart locks, and the operating efficiencies they provide, these concerns usually go away.”
Smart Lock Benefits Concerns aside, smart locks offer a new type of convenience to both residential and non-residential users. Smart locks allow users to control their access from anywhere in the world. In a residential setting this means the ability to share access with family members, visitors or even service providers. “You can let your kids in if they come home early, or issue a temporary or time-limited key to a petsitter or a carer, just to mention a couple of useful everyday scenarios. Smart door locks are also enabling an exciting range of new domestic services. For example, in-home parcel delivery even while you’re out, or the ability to manage your property (or a number of properties) through short-term rental platforms like Airbnb. We’re just at the start of major change in domestic security, with smart door locks at the heart of it,” Sagi said. “With a traditional mechanical lock, the only choice is to give someone a key, so withdrawing access, or limiting it to a certain time period, is a challenge. And if a key is lost, the lock needs to be re-keyed,” Graves explained. Smart locks, however, allow for access to be granted and withdrawn at any time. For non-residential customers, smart locks could provide enormous productivity benefits. “There is no master key that can be lost, and when employees or tenants leave, access rights can be withdrawn immediately. With a traditional

earable technology usually conjures up images of fitness trackers and smartwatches, but nowadays with their enormous popularity they are being used for safety and security as well. Wearables have become so popular that research firm Gartner forecasts that 310.4 million wearable devices will be sold in 2017, generating US$30.5 billion. This

is a 16.7-percent increase from 2016. The vast majority of sales will come from smartwatches and wristbands; however, sales of body worn cameras (BWC) are expected to increase
rapidly over the next five years — from just over 1 million in 2017 to over 5.6 million in 2021. When it comes to safety and security, the most
notable wearable is body worn cameras, commonly used in law enforcement. Companies focused on lone worker solutions, though, are developing different types of

wearables to help employers keep lone worker safe. Lone workers operate in a countless number and variety of industries, from civil enforcement to critical infrastructure to social care. They work in all types of environments from crowded urban areas to remote oil fields. Regardless of who and where, as the name implies, lone workers are on their own, needing to be largely
Among the most common concerns employers have for its lone workers are injury and violence. There are of course laws and regulations to help minimize the possibility of such events, but oftentimes they are vague and difficult to implement. One example is the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1970 under OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) in the U.S. The Act includes a “working alone” section, but the language is vague and does not provide any clear guidelines for employers. As such, employers and companies that provide lone worker solutions must be proactive in implementing their own guidelines to protect workers. Among the biggest concern employers have when it comes to safety is violence and aggression toward these workers. “Lone workers must enter various environments where the risk of encountering aggressive members of the public is significantly

increased,” said Richie McBride, MD of Edesix. “One survey, conducted by the Royal College of Nursing, found that nearly 40 percent of respondents had been harassed or assaulted while at work in the last year. Without support from colleagues or sufficient emergency processes, lone workers can quickly find themselves in the middle of a potentially dangerous situation.” Injury is another concern for lone workers. Without help around or nearby, injury of a lone worker on the job could
lead to death. Even with lone worker solutions in place, there is no guarantee of safety especially if the solution is not being properly monitored. This was the case in 2013 when a water tank worker drowned in the U.K. Even after activating his lone worker alarm after his fall, the company did not respond until four hours later, which by then was too late. Events such as this only highlight the importance of having proper procedures in place and the need for conducting thorough risk assessment.
