welCoMe to SMahoMe autuMn Guidebook During IFA 2017, the leading European consumer electronics show in Berlin, Germany, it comes as little surprise that the smart home zones was prevalent of voice control by Amazon Alexa and Google Home. It, however, is not the whole picture that IFA told the market about smart home development. What have been displayed at the show is quite different from its two-year-ago version. Exhibitors were no longer eager to showcase their technology innovations, but to use the show as the occasion to educate visitors understanding how the technologies can facilitate a better and smarter living for them. With the improved interoperability, smart devices like motorized blinds, radiators, locks, thermostats, security sensors and more are working more and more together to solve users’ pain points in their real lives. Just like LEEDARSON GROUP's statement in the Cover Story this issue on page 08, “When it comes to smart home, technology is not always in the first place.” An end-user centric approach to design the products should be deployed for better market development. While home security related products such as smart locks,

contact sensors and indoor/outdoor cameras are still the main visitor interests at IFA, gadgets creating cozy home ambience and catering to energy management have drawn a great part of show attention. Check out Feature on page 20 for the collection of IFA 2017 product highlights. Smart lighting has long been one of smart home pillar in terms of home automation development and market opportunities, considering the amount of lightbulbs in a home than other devices like thermostats or smoke sensors. Upfront cost and installation work are the current main hurdles of greater adoption though. Exploration on page 12 talks to several market dominators to share their perspectives on the stepwise development of smart lighting.

‘When it Comes to Smart Home,
Technology
Is Not Always in “Technology is placed in the first place for most of IoT companies. To us, solving users’ pain points is the core value that LEEDARSON wants to deliver in the IoT arena,” said Kellen Yang, Sales and Marketing Director of IoT Business Unit of LEEDARSON Group in an interview during IFA 2017 where LEEDARSON, a leading ODM for global smart home and lighting brands, presented a wide spectrum of product lineups covering different communication protocols and technologies.

the First Place:’
D
uring IFA 2017, the leading European consumer electronics show in Germany, LEEDARSON demonstrated four display themes that represent the company’s priorities: total smart home integration, intelligent office and retail solutions, great interoperability between devices, and the latest technology innovations including voice control and lamp cameras. The booth scheme was a clean reflection of what the company would like to offer in this promising IoT market. “This is our second time at IFA. We’d like to share our ideas of smart home integration and also how the technology can be applied in other markets, outside the home application,” explained Kellen
Yang, Sales and Marketing Director of IoT Business Unit of LEEDARSON Group. Commenting on the smart home market, Yang cited a two-to-three-time growth in the quantity of shipments compared to 2016 in LEEDARSON. “However, there are different popularities among the regions. Home security products are more popular in the US, while lighting and energy management controls have a much better customer reaction in Europe. As for protocols, retail channels prefer BLE or Wi-Fi based products whereas project markets prefer ZigBee or Z-Wave solutions.”
Solving Pain PointS Despite the growth in shipments, Yang
Kellen Yang Sales and Marketing Director of IoT Business Unit of LEEDARSON Group
underscores that currently smart homes are still not high enough in the endusers’ interests. “According to a statistic published in the first half year of 2017, 21 home sensor brands in France and Germany together contribute a revenue of only six million Euro at the retail-price level. To me, this figure is small. We see the gradual acceptance of smart home products in Europe, but more education and improvement is needed” said Yang and added that “The hesitation toward smart home technologies right now is due to the poor interoperability between devices and unstable performance. While a diverse portfolio allows the supplier to fight on multiple fronts in the market, it does little to solve users’ real pain points.”
Our priority is not to create new product items for smart home, but to work on how to optimize and refine the products. adoPting an End-uSEr CEntriC aPProaCH As growth in the smart home business has not peaked yet, LEEDARSON has been gaining the key insights to conquer the smart home market challenges through its local customer management experiences in China. “In LEEDARSON, we have a special department named Solution & Inquiry
Management (SIM). They face the end users directly. The department collects and analyzes the questions asked by end users. And based on these questions and using scenarios, SIM proposes the possible next-generation products to solve users’ problems. LEEDARSON designs the products per customers’ feedbacks. So that we are confident of our new products better solving users’

real problems. We do not let R&D and technology dominate the product development.” To fully comprehend worldwide users’ needs, LEEDARSON has local staffs and product managers doing in-home tests in different countries. They test and examine if the product designs match the demands of the real users in their countries. To overcome the interoperability challenges, LEEDARSON deploys three paralleled departments to support the four product teams. They are “RF & Connectivity” “Software” and “X-Lab.” RF & Connectivity Dept. is in charge of module and firmware designs, while the Software Dept. is dedicated to APP and cloud solutions. X-Lab, on the other hand, develops the algorithms, voice and gesture control and facial recognition for smart home and other new applications. “We have 350 R&D staffs around the globe within LEEDARSON to work on IoT related product developments,” cited Yang.

▲ LEEDARSON showcased the great interoperability in its ecosystem.
▲ Sensor and remote control in retail is the other target market of LEEDARSON.

▲ Easier lighting control by voice without hubs or networks is one direction of LEEDARSON’s product development.
While LEEDARSON has streamlined its department deployments for IoT business, the company is putting more muscle to their extension in smart office and retail management markets. Coming from a solid background of lighting, “We have customers and partners in diverse sectors such as campus, business, entertainment and other facilities. With the experiences in those projects, LEEDARSON has found the similarities of technology applications.” In China, LEEDARSON has a solution for classroom management. With a simple button, the projector, microphone, lights, curtains in the classroom are all set automatically to the perfect position and level for lectures. “Similar concepts can also be found in commercial areas. In this way, lighting control can have a greater value to our lives and business,” explained Yang. Yang further takes “Day light harvesting sensor” as an example. It is a smart

dimmer that senses indoor sunlight level, and automatically adjusts light lux according to it. “The sensor has been used in smart home. It can be used for campus and smart office lighting control.” Yang said that LEEDARSON has been developing the product working with shading control as well. The other targeted market LEEDARSON is approaching is retail. In a grocery shops, sensors and remote controllers are adopted to create better shopping ambience and save operational costs. “The temperature/humidity hybrid sensor working with door/window sensor can be applied to stabilize the shop environment. For food chain stores, our temperature/humidity sensor can be helpful to monitor the freshness of commodities,” illustrated Yang. Beyond that, LEEDARSON is aggressive
in taking cameras into the next level. Its X-Lab has been developing video analysis software to help retail entrepreneurs’ operation and marketing management. “With the software, shop owners can easily track the visitor traffic flow, which is important for merchandise supplying, allocation and promotion campaign development of shop management. Facial recognition capabilities embedded in the software can further facilitate the shop owner in developing VIP or loyalty programs.” With its strong footholds in China and US, LEEDARSON plans to start its smart retail solution offering in these two markets. Intelligent office solutions, however, will be kicked off in Europe first. “Thanks to the lighting business, we have long-term customers and solid requirement of office solutions in
Europe,” said Yang.
morE intEroPEraBlE and affordaBlE Yang believes the existing product ranges of LEEDARSON are sufficient for the current smart home requirements. “Right now, our priority is not to create new product items for smart home, but to work on how to optimize and refine the product by providing easier use or control and better integration with other devices. Also affordability is a key factor to increase user acceptance in the market. We know that end-users are still unsure about whether investments in smart home is worthy or not. LEEDARSON strives to provide better affordable products with better quality” concluded Yang.

Today lighting is at the connected stage where consumers are testing smart lighting using mobile apps. Upon us is responsive lighting where lights at home may soon react to our habits and lifestyle automatically.

mart lighting can potentially bring much convenience. People love being able to walk into the house late at night while the lights automatically turn on, or walk into the entryway with arms full of groceries without having to flip the light
switch. There are more light bulbs in a home than other appliances like thermostat and speaker, which makes lighting a prime connection point for unlocking additional smart home opportunities. There are challenges, however. Upfront cost and installation work are the main hurdles of greater adoption. Often times a gateway is required to relay signals of various communication protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave and Wi-Fi. Signal transmission could be unstable and may lead to system breakdown. “The smart home space can still be confusing. Consumers want devices that are interoperable and allow them to connect features together vs. having many different stand-alone devices with individualized offerings,” said Tom Stimac, Chief Innovation Manager of GE Lighting. “They also hope for connected experiences that are easy and where there is little 12 mySMAhome.com 2017
to worry about post the initial set-up,” Stimac added. Rebecca Töreman, Product Developer at IKEA Home Smart at IKEA of Sweden, concurred. “We asked our customers in home visits and surveys what they thought about smart lighting, and they said that it was too expensive and too difficult to understand,” she said.
SoLutionS to AddreSS compLex Setup One possible solution is to use control devices compatible with various ecosystems and technology platforms. Leviton, a global automation solution
provider, claims to offer such devices. Its Decora Smart with HomeKit Technology allows for customizable lighting control using an Apple product like iPhone, iPad tom Stimac n or Apple Watch. Chief Innovation Manager of GE Lighting “We cater to each homeowner’s preference and create dedicated, pure “Voice compatibility is huge products that tie into other ecosystems. right now. Another solution is to simplify the connectivity, according to Gunitech Corp., which makes a Bluetooth-based smart products, including LED lamps. With Bluetooh, the gateway device to translate different communication protocols is no longer required. Users can control the lighting at home directly from their mobile app, said Ray Shiu, Associate Vice President of Gunitech Corp. Imagine a scenario where homeowners don’t need to switch on and off lights
manually. When you enter a room, be it a living room, dining room or bedroom, the lights will turn on automatically. And they will also turn off on their own when you leave the space. This, according to Shiu, can be accomplished via Bluetooth mesh networking. Just embed sensors, lighting and other home appliances with Bluetooth technology and link them together, so that actions like turning on lights can be triggered automatically when motions are detected. Bluetooth mesh networking is ideal for this type of deployment. The technology will lower the hurdles of smart lighting adoption, namely higher costs and complex installation, Shiu said. “Bluetooth can cut down hardware and maintenance expenses.”

E x p l o r a t i o n on big companies’ efforts. “Global brands have the ability to influence the general public’s use habits, and they are pushing hard for greater adoption of smart lighting,” said Chen Wei-lun, Sales Director of Beautiful Light Technology Corp., a Taiwan-based retrofit lamp manufacturer that has made Wi-Fi, Zigbee and Bluetoothcompatible light bulbs. Home builders and appliance makers also hold major sway. “Construction companies and major appliance brands have rolled out TVs, refrigerators and air conditioners that can be automatically switched on before users arrive home. And now they are turning the attention to lighting automation,” Chen said. Fred Chuang, General Manager of Fleda Technology Corp., that makes Apple HomeKit-compatible smart light bulb adaptor, says the DIY market in Taiwan is different from that in the U.S., and therefore, cannot be relied on to advocate and push for smart home adoption. The “environment” is very important, he said. It is more feasible to rely on favorable government policies and the push by telecommunication and real estate developers, Chuang said. Companies in general believe that voice control will become a main control mechanism. Voice compatibility is huge right now. Consumers are growing more and more accustomed to using their voice to unlock additional opportunity at home, so there is demand for voice-controlled smart bulbs, according to GE Lighting. “We believe that as voice integration continues to become more sophisticated, the associated challenges will lessen and lead to higher adaptation rates of smart home technology, including smart lighting,” Rhoades from Leviton said.

multiple lighting devices at once to create a desired indoor atmosphere. The third and final application is automation, where the lights will be turned on and off by themselves per users’ preference. Today lighting is really at the connected stage where homeowners are beginning to test smart lighting that’s connected to apps. “Upon us is responsive lighting where we are using things like voice to control lighting and soon where lighting reacts to our habits,” GE Lighting’s Stimac said. Lights may be turned on when users arrive home, or shift to sleep-enabling light one hour before bed, for example. Leviton plans to introduce similar automation products. “We also see a pipeline in the future for devices that are good at anticipating and understanding people,” Rhoades said.
chen wei-lun n Sales Director of Beautiful Light Technology
“Manufacturers are always walking one step ahead of their brand clients in terms of product development... This is also how we add value.” Also, IKEA is rolling out “systems that don’t require you to change too much of your general behavior,” Töreman said, adding that this is why the company has physical controllers to complement app control. Fleda’s Chuang offers another use case, that is, to enable automation by linking users’ mobile phone and router at home. By measuring the distance between the phone and the router, a mechanism may be created to turn on the lights and air conditioner when the user is within 100 meters of the home radius. One application is using IFTTT (if this, then that) integration. As the use becomes more prevalent, smart lighting can trigger automation activity based on events in the home using third-party devices. For example, if a motion is detected on a surveillance camera, then turn on Porch Light. One of the smart home categories GE Lighting see really rising right now is the wellness category. Part of that is a new focus on sleep and consumers are looking for solutions designed to help them get a better night’s sleep, Stimac said. A warm light is used to help increase melatonin before bed, while a cool, vibrant light helps people get energized in the morning. IKEA is doing something similar. “Small changes in the lighting at home and at work can have a great impact on our well-being,” Töreman said, adding that this is why the company has made available devices that correspond with humans’ circadian rhythm.

Atip Bijanonda, President of Housing Business Association Thailand (HBA), has years of great experience in property, real estate and housing industry. He has shared an exclusive overview with SMAhome about the smart home demands in Thailand, and pointed out that home security systems and appliance remote controls via cloud network is popular in Thai market.
Please give us a brief introduction of HBA. HBA is the major association in the residential real estate market of Thailand. The association has been established for 36 years, and has more than 200 members now. HBA has two main missions, propelling legislative regulations on real estates and promote housing projects. For example, when the government is issuing new laws related to properties, HBA is usually part of the work force to
34 mySMAhome.com 2017
develop the regulation. Also, we promote real estate products for all dealers and developers, no matter they are our members or not. Our members consist of leading residential real estate companies in Thailand, including those on the stock market. Supalai Public Company Limited, one of the top five developers in Thailand, is an example. In addition to developers, advisers from banks and governments are parts of members. There are actually more than 1000 developers in Thailand nation-wide. Though we are located in Bangkok, some developers in the rural areas gather into smaller associations and work with HBA as well. HBA takes care of issues related to real estate in every province.
Developers in Thailand used to introduce basic home security and lighting control systems to their residential projects. Nowadays, with more information in the market, IoT control is popular for Thai consumers as well. When talking about smart home demands, we should see the market in three segments: entrylevel, mid-class and luxury ones. Projects of the entry-level ones usually come with the basic home security settings such as the doorphone and onespot CCTV system at the entrance; mid-class projects deploy the multi-spot home security and basic lighting control solutions. For high-end projects, whole-house security and lighting control are equipped with home entertainment systems. Project developers provide different deployment plans according to the budget and preference. For example, entry-level project buyers care more about the total cost of ownership rather than complete smart home solutions. Nevertheless, with more information on the market, users’ interests to “IoT-control” ability of home appliances are growing. Remote air conditioner controlling is an instance. People are fond of the functionality that the air conditioner automatically turns on at the preset temperature before arriving homes.
does Thai have preferred brands for smart home? Brands such as Samsung, Panasonic, Siemens and some other European names are popular among luxury projects. The middle-class market, which accounts for around 60% of the total residential projects now, is mainly dominated by Chinese and Taiwanese products at the moment. Now the smart home market is still young in Thailand. The market offering is a bit limited. If companies are promoting new products in Thai market, they need to educate users. From the perspectives of a developer, preferred smart home
products include home security, lighting control, home appliances and home entertainment solutions for those high-end projects Apart from in-house solutions, community security is another growing demand. As the labor wages is growing in this country, security guards are getting more costly. If security solutions integrated with new technology can take place of the security guards, it will be very interesting for the market.
What are users’ common concerns about smart home? The first concern is, if the installation of smart home would affect the interior design. They do not like the exposed wires, so wireless products are getting popular. After-service is another concern. There have been many cases that users can not find the contact to fix the breakdown systems or to maintain the system. They are forced to change the whole smart home system as the original one cannot be fixed or integrated with other sub-systems. Last but not least, the affordable price is a key factor for customers to decide the smart home installation.
Suggestions to international smart home manufacturers who are interested to work with Thai developers. First of all, they need to provide sufficient information. Providers cannot leave consumers learning the system by themselves; instead, you should make product features easy to understand and user-friendly. In this way, products can have wider market acceptance. To enter Thailand, international brands have to have the clear market segmentation target. Mid-class users can be price sensitive, while high-end project buyers like luxury branded products. Each market segment has different requirements for the vendors to fill in. For newcomers, the pilot project is a must to start the market foothold. Customers do not believe in brochures or flyers, but if you have a real case to see, to refer, then you are more countable. Some Chinese suppliers have been doing well on this. To build their pilot projects, they offer good priced products with aesthetic design for mid-class buyer, despite the product lifespan is not the best. In addition, as I mentioned, the service is very important. Companies who provide bad service will have a bad reputation in the market. Customers need consistent services for after-sales maintenance and supports. ▲

Smart Home Currently tHe moSt PromiSing Segment among otHer iot enabled marketS:
Bosch sensortec
As people care more about the effects of air quality on body health, and the trend of carry on smaller and lighter portable devices with great convenience, the new product launch of Bosch Sensortec’s environmental sensor BME680 has matched both. SMAhome has interviewed Wolfgang Schmitt, Senior Manager Strategic Marketing of Bosch Sensortec, to learn more about the new product BME680, and the company’s view on smart home industry developments.
What makes the Bosch BME680 special and what is different from its predecessor BME280? BME680 is a unique 4-in-1-sensor, which combines barometric pressure, relative humidity, ambient temperature and gas sensing functions in a tiny package of just 3.0 x 3.0 x 0.95 mm³. This makes it a cost efficient solution with low temperature coefficient offset (TCO) which is easy to integrate into small, mobile battery powered devices, as well as stationary applications. Combined with its unique software algorithm, it achieves high accuracy levels for indoor VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) measurements at lowest current consumption of < 0.1 mA in ultra-low power (ULP) mode and < 1 mA in low power mode. BME680 adds an all-important gas sensing function to its predecessor BME280. The gas sensor within the BME680 can detect a broad range of gases in order to measure indoor air quality for personal well-being. This includes measurement of VOCs from paints (such as

formaldehyde), lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, furnishings, office equipment, glues, adhesives, alcohol and other gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen, in the part per billion (ppb) range. This gas sensing function of indoor air quality is of significant importance as people spend 90% of their lifetime inside buildings and 1/3 in bedrooms. As VOCs negatively impact indoor air quality and thus affect people’s well-being, measuring these VOCs can help improving indoor air quality, and thereby enhance people’s health and quality of life.
Who are the target customers of BME680 from Bosch Sensortec? Our target customers are companies from diverse areas within the IoT, which offer products for e.g. smart home, smart buildings, and smart offices. Apart from customers in the IoT market, we also target wearables, personal weather stations and navigation systems. In general, BME680 is of interest to all customers that want to measure environmental data in terms of barometric pressure, relative humidity, ambient temperature and indoor air quality. Two specific examples of consumer electronic products utilizing the BME680 include the Bosch Smart Home Twinguard, a smart smoke detector with an indoor air quality sensor and i-BLADES Smartcase, a modular phone case that as one of its features turns the smartphone into a portable indoor air quality monitor. Furthermore, there are two types of customer products: battery-powered products, such as smoke detectors or wearables, and products with power connection. For battery-powered products, low power consumption is a key criterion, which should not exceed 0.2 mA. We can achieve this via the ULP mode. Regarding products with power connection, power
How does Bosch Sensortec’s product portfolio and specifically BME680 fit for smart home market requirements? Bosch Sensortec’s product portfolio fits very well to the emerging smart home market: we provide low- and ultra-low-power sensor solutions as well as MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) scanner systems for interactive laser projection. Along with the growing smart home market, there will be more use cases and applications where our smart motion sensor solutions ideally fit, like for smart intrusion detection. Furthermore, Bosch Sensortec’s environmental sensor solutions, such as BME680, will open up new application fields in the smart home and smart building management. The same is true for the humidity sensor BME280 that is ideally suited for smart control of air conditioning and ventilation. Finally, our ultra-small interactive laser projector, the MEMS scanner BML050, opens up a completely new dimension of HMI (human-machine-interface) experience, i.e. the flexible, customizable projection of virtual user interfaces onto any kind of surface.
Among the segments of smart home (home security, energy management, and ambient assisted living), how does Bosch Sensortec consider the priority of technology development? Among those three segments, smart energy management has probably a slightly higher priority because any kind of improvement in energy management has immediately a direct impact on saving energy and thus saving cost. That is where we see the big benefit of BME680: Air conditioning is only active and thus consuming
energy, when the air is not good or too humid. As soon as the BME680 detects that the air quality is good again, the air ventilation can be switched off.
Apart from smart home, is BME680 applicable in other industries or occasions? BME680 is not only suitable for smart home, but wherever there is a need for cost effective environmental monitoring, specifically indoor air quality measurement. Because of its additional features of pressure, humidity and temperature in addition to gas, it has broad applications in industries such as IoT and in the following industries and occasions: • Personal weather stations • Warning of dryness and high temperatures • Context awareness, e.g. skin humidity recognition, changes in rooms • Measurement of air amount and flow • Home automation (HVAC) • GPS improvement • Indoor navigation and floor level detection • Fitness tracking /well-being • Altitude tracking and calorie expenditure measurement during sports activities
What is Bosch Sensortec’s point of view regarding the development of smart connections and wearables in the future? Both smart connected devices and wearables will be important parts of our lives. These devices will provide more and more value to us. An increasing share of this value will be based upon information that is provided by sensors. Here comes Bosch Sensortec into the scene: Our MEMS sensors provide precise measurement data for valuable use cases while at the same time being small size, reliable and power saving. Bosch Sensortec will continue to develop sensors that enable further use of wearables and other connected devices in the future.
What is Bosch Sensortec’s perspective regarding the smart home industry in the future? Speaking generally, compared with the smartphone market, volumes in smart home applications are still relatively small. Still, for such solutions like our BME680 indoor air quality sensor the smart home area is currently the most attractive segment. We think that for us as sensor and system manufacturer, the smart home market is currently the most promising among other IoT enabled markets. The smart home market has just started and has certainly a very big growth potential.

Parks Associates. “The increase in adoption will lead to a US$150 million increase in annual sales revenues during that period.” Parks Associates notes a major barrier to the mass adoption of smart door locks remains the high upfront costs. According to the firm, many consumers cannot justify the disparity in prices between connected and unconnected models.
Smart Homes To Become Majority in North America by 2021
T
he number of smart homes in North America is expected to reach 73 million by 2021, comprising 55% of all households, based on a study conducted by Berg Insight. North America is the world’s most advanced smart home market and the region had an installed base of 21.8 million smart homes at the end of 2016, showing a 47% year-on-year growth. The European market is still a few years behind North America in terms of penetration and market maturity. At the end of 2016, there
were 8.5 million smart homes in Europe and the market is forecasted to grow at an annual growth rate of 57% in the next five years to reach 80.6 million smart homes by 2021, which corresponds to 36% of all European households. “2017 is anticipated to be a good year for smart home technology as entry-level smart home systems have become affordable for the mass market, at the same time as the reliability and features have improved significantly,” says Anders Frick, Senior Analyst at Berg Insight. New innovative user

Global Sales of Smart Home Hub to Hit US$327 Million in Five Years
D
riven by increasing number of connected devices in a household, global sales of smart home hub will grow at an annual rate 4% to reach US$327 million in 2022, according to a report by Beige Market Intelligence. The increasing clutter of connected devices in a household creates the need for a central device that can help endusers control all the devices in one go, the report says. Smart home hub comes handy in these situations, thereby finding their application increasing among end-users
worldwide. The rapidly growing voice-first technology will spur the demand for smart hubs too. A voice-first world would create the window of opportunities for full-home integration – an integration of home, infrastructure, and household appliances, and also unify them into a cohesive unit such as smart home hub.
Voice Assistant Motivates Users to Get More Smart Home Devices
U
p to 91% of smart speaker owners said voice assistant has made them more likely to buy another connected home device, and the majority said they are most excited about getting security systems, based on a survey by automation service IFTTT. The survey was conducted in April to discover how IFTTT users are interacting with their voice assistants. Smart speaker is still fairly new in the consumer market, as up to 70% of the surveyed said they
have owned the assistant for less than a year. Nonetheless, 98% believe they’ll still be using it five years from now. In terms of use frequency, 60% use their assistants at least four times a day, while 29% use seven times or more. Assistants are used for various functions – to stream music, control lighting, set timers and get the weather update. About half of the survey said they bought smart assistant to quickly get news and information. And 46% said they’re more likely to ask
their assistant for information over their smartphone.

mart house technologies are becoming increasingly important in construction projects. The reason why more and more householders are opting for Smart Homes is their increased need for safety, comfort and energy efficiency within their own four walls. ABB, the global leader in power and automation technologies, has developed smart home systems that offer a wide range of secure, comfortable and energy efficient solutions. The result is a flexible and varied range of products that control lighting, heating and air conditioning, door communication systems, audio systems and much more, simplifying everyday life. According to the U.S. Houzz Smart Home Trends Study 2016, upgrading their home security technology is the most important reason why residents opt for intelligent home automation. 67 % of respondents said they wanted to use smart home appliances to protect their homes from intruders. This was followed, in second place, by residents who wanted to have their living area in sight at any time and from anywhere. Solutions should be precisely tailored to these individual needs. For example to provide comprehensive protection against burglaries and offer effective monitoring capabilities that allow residents to make sure everything is in order at home via use of a tablet or smartphone.
Safety beginS on the doorStep At ABB, safety begins on the doorstep. The front door connects private and public living spaces. It is especially here where comprehensive safety precautions are most important. An example is the door communication system, ABB-Welcome,

which offers a video system with integrated infrared illumination. The best way to secure your doorstep is to scan your personal fingerprint or enter a PIN code known only to residents of the house. Due to the innovative 2-wire bus technology the door communication system can be installed easily and quickly. As a result, the system is suitable both for use in new buildings as well as for renovations. One of the most important and at the same time simplest measures to prevent burglaries is light. Light, which is turned on by a movement detector as soon as something moves or by the presence simulation – a function that can authentically simulate the presence of the occupants, even if no one is at home. In the evening the lights go on, in the morning the blinds go up. For longer periods of absence, such as holidays, the usual weekly schedule can be recorded and activated via tablet or smartphone.
a good feeling at the touch of a button While light acts as a deterrent against intruders, it has a soothing effect on its occupants. If you hear suspicious sounds at night, you can switch on the panic lighting with the touch of a button. Via a central switch, all the lights in the house and garden are illuminated at the same time, brightly lighting the whole environment. On the one hand, the panic switch provides a dazzlingly bright light, while on the other hand it provides residents with orientation and a secure feeling at the simple touch of a button. The prerequisite for this function is the programming of a predefined light scene. A great addition to the antiburglary protection is the system’s smart window monitoring. Everyone knows the procedure of checking
whether all windows are closed before leaving the house. In smart households of the future, all this will be carried out by window sensors. They check the position of the window handle. Is it open, closed, or on tilt? This information is then, for example, wirelessly transferred to the tablet or smartphone, making it possible to check whether all windows are closed while on the road. Open windows act like an invitation to burglars, but also leave your home exposed to the potential enormous damage, which can be caused by storms. Detectors are installed wirelessly between the window handle and the window frame and the existing window handle can be used as usual. Since installation work on the window is unnecessary, this feature can be retrofitted at any time.

InterconnectIvIty StIll a challenge In Smart home ImplementatIon: ardomuS
T
o enable a true smart home, it is essential to integrate devices from different brands and devices running on different protocols into one network, which is a difficult task, and there is still a long way to go, according to gateway manufacturer Ardomus. “We have not really reached the stage of Internet of everything,” Ardomus co-founder Chinru Lin said, as companies tend to create their own ecosystems so that only their devices can talk to each another. Ardomus wants to solve this problem, by providing a gateway that links everything together, so that devices made by Xiaomi, Haier and Huawei, for example, can all communicate and work together. Lin said Ardomus wants to facilitate a true Internet of Things, where devices “big or small, fast or slow, wired or wireless, many or few in quantity,” can all be linked together. “It is not an easy task,” Lin pointed out. Lin believes the notion of smart home is still relatively new. The automation functions, such as turning on the lighting, are only “nice to have,” but not addressing any pain points, he said. In the end, it needs to bring greater convenience to people’s lives, or to make it an indispensable “service.” But reliable network is the foundation of good services. Ardomus aims to provide a robust connectivity to ensure the indispensable smart services go uninterrupted when they become available. The company makes wireless and wired gateways which can

link different smart devices at home and support various protocols like ZigBee, Wi-Fi and RS485. The gateways then connect to a router and therefore the Internet, to enable control through user interface like mobile apps. Smart home is expected to grow increasingly popular. There are currently two business modes in the emerging industry; companies either serve the DIY market or the professional installation market. Ardomus is in the professional installation market, and participates in project-based home construction, where desired smart home functions are designed and built into new houses. The company works with system integrators that install various devices and appliances. Ardomus may perform customization work to link to all the devices and appliances in a project. Every family may have different needs, and a different gateway will be required in each case. There is something delicate at play. The gateway has to not only connect different communication protocols, but also separate them at times. For example, the network used for Internet surfing is better separated from the network reserved for IP camera, air conditioner or lighting devices. This can prevent the latter home network from being compromised if the former is hacked. Ardomus’ wireless gateway supports protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave and IQRF. The company’s wired gateway supports protocols like RS485 and RS232 needed for building automation. To fulfill the function of a gateway, Ardomus will continue to improve its interoperability ability, in order to be able to communicate with more protocols and devices, Lin said.

ith the number of connected home devices increases, the demand for universal home networking has clearly grown in the last couple years, according to networking equipment maker Zyxel Communications. More and more home appliances – such as air conditioners, refrigerators and TVs – are connected to the Internet to collect data. Because they are placed in different locations throughout the home, whole-home coverage is now in greater demand. “The demand has clearly grown in the past 1-2 years,” said Bill Su, AVP of Zyxel’s Smart Living Business Unit. Zyxel is a publicly traded company based in Taiwan and makes DSL and other networking devices. It has distributors in more than 70 countries and works with network equipment vendors, telecom companies and ISPs around the world. A digital home is built based on a stable, pervasive networking environment, which according to Su, has not reached maturity. This could be an opportunity for Zyxel. The smart home market is “warming up,” and IP camera is the No. 1 product in terms of sales revenue, Su said. Seeing the growing demand for universal home networking, Zyxel plans to launch a new product suite that will enable comprehensive Wi-Fi coverage. Whole-home coverage can be more easily accomplished in newly constructed homes, since builders will put in fiber or Ethernet cables that can be used to extend Wi-Fi signals. The same thing cannot be done for many existing homes. Zyxel has been serving this market by using electric cables to extend network signals. The company will soon launch a new solution that can better

ensure coverage in homes. The new product will also feature voice command capability. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are considered the mainstream protocols, through which mobile devices can be easily connected to. This is why Zyxel has built Bluetooth and Wi-Fi into its home routers, wireless extenders and other networking equipment.
Making SMart HoMe ProductS Besides providing network gears, Zyxel has recently waded into smart device production. It introduced Aurora Camera in the first half of 2017. The company saw the demand rises for remote home care and remote monitoring. Users want to check on their senior parents, young children or even pets at home, Su noted. The product is targeted at average consumers or the DIY market. The company strives to deliver superior image quality. Featuring a premium Sony image sensor, the Aurora sets itself apart by rendering colorful images in a low-light environment. Zyxel also sells cloud storage devices to enable smart living. Netflix and Amazon videos have grown more popular over the last couple of years. With the device, homeowners can store their music and video content on the cloud. Photos can be stored locally in the device where users may make direct editing. Powered with high end specifications, the network storage device deliver fast read and write speed as if working directly from the computer system, Zyxel says on the product description page.

EdgE CompuTIng To grow morE popular In HomEs: nXp
N
XP Semiconductors has recently teamed up with Amazon and extended Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) cloud capabilities to local devices, to enable edge processing, which NXP believes will be the next level of artificial intelligence in the smart home setting. Edge computing is a new class of gateways or systems that performs data processing near the source of the data, or at the edge of the network, working in conjunction with the cloud. For Amazon’s IoT services, its cloud software can also be extended to run on local devices. One application is that a camera collects data which is sent to an IoT gateway for edge processing, before it is sent to the cloud for further analytics. “Because it is impractical to connect all those IoT devices directly with the cloud,” said Sam Fuller, Head of Strategy System Solutions of Digital Networking at NXP Semiconductors. There are connectivity cost, latency issue, etc. “Most of the stuff you do, you don’t need to go to the cloud,” he said. This applies to a smart home setting too. Amazon Echo does some local processing. “I don’t want to just send everything, maybe for privacy or bandwidth reasons,” Fuller explained. “When you start to upload video to the cloud, you quickly find out it’s a lot of data. IoT devices can generate lots of data, will require a lot of intelligence. Edge computing is designed to solve the problem,” Fuller noted. The edge device – which is often times an IoT gateway – is fairly low-power, light-weight, but runs the same software as the cloud, Fuller pointed out, adding that NXP makes gateway processers that have the capacity. It is also about aggregating IoT data from many users or sensors. In a wind farm, for example, a lot of data – such as wind speed, turbine conditions and amount of power generated – is created. There can be thousands of windmills, and it would be utterly impractical to connect all the data directly to the cloud. Local systems are therefore set up to process the data.“ Another example is surveillance cameras that record videos locally. The cameras don’t stream directly to the cloud. Typically the cameras will have some edge intelligence, which, for example, may allow them to recognize the

outline or shape of a gun carried by someone in a public place. Upon detection, this finding will be sent to the cloud for further processing. Fuller projects more adoption of edge computing within homes in the near future. Many companies have come up with interesting ideas on how to leverage edge computing, according to Fuller, who added, “it’s about moving to the next level of artificial intelligence in homes.”
Smart Home tecHnology continueS to improve NXP pays much attention to smart home because its sell semiconductor solutions that go to smart devices like sensor, thermostat and remote control. The homes will get smarter and smarter. We are not even close to the end of what ultimately can be accomplished by smart homes, Fuller said. Two main obstacles lie ahead of broader adoption. The first is the economics, or the cost of going to smart home. However, the cost is bound to decrease as processing performance advances. The evolution of computers is a case in point. A mainframe computer used to cost US$20 million, but right now a small access point that has more processing power and bandwidth costs less than $20. “From $20 million to $20, that has been the trend of electronics, we are just starting to see what can be done in the smart home, as we continue to drive the cost down on technology,” Fuller said.

Monetize Your Data anD Create Business Profit: MoBagel Data Is a Key to assIst JuDgement In 2015, MoBagel carried out their service formally, turning the data collected through IoT into valuable business decisions. “IoT is a breakthrough of big data,” said Adms. In the past, experience is the main indicator while making decisions, but in the IoT era, data collection has rapidly proceeded with the improvement of software and computing power. Data nowadays can have higher accuracy and density, and it can be collected continuously. In smart home, when users can attain more data from their devices, their habits and lifestyle can be predictive. The progress can assist human decisions and judgements. When database is sufficient, machines can provide decisions even more precise than human experience. MoBagel started practicing their projects with some clients. The effect were massive and valuable for businesses, and has helped many companies to create millions of revenue.
all Controllable thIngs Can be PreDICtable MoBagel offers enterprise services such as demand forecast and predictive maintenance. With the data analysis of user behavior, businesses can develop a considerate service and ideal campaigns to increase user loyalty and attract more customers, “you know what the customers want and what they don’t want before it really happens, so the preparation and adjustment can be done right on time,” said Adms. As for predictive maintenance of business equipment, companies can be well-prepared before machines really break down. This reduces the loss while the machines are waiting for maintenance or renewal.
sMahome has the pleasure to interview adms Chung, Ceo &Co-founder of MoBagel, to know how MoBagel applies predictive ai to iot enterprises and assists them on precise decision making. adms believes that iot can collect data from all connected devices, no matter it’s a machine, human behavior or environmental change. “We want to know more about this world through iot, so we started our big data analysis from iot,” said adms.

When every household is equipped with its own power generator, the energy supply can be simpler, and MoBagel’s service can use the data for improving power utilization and efficiency. Also, with voice controls like Amazon Alexa or Google Home, he considered smart home system a steward, and every device knows the daily routine and habits of their homeowner. From Adms’ view, the greatest potential of future smart home companies is to break through the business model from onetime sales to whole-home rental service. When it comes to a longterm rental service for every home appliance, both providers and consumers value the living experience and the comforts of homeowners. “MoBagel can analyze the data collected from all smart homes, and help companies develop a better service for endconsumers and a predictive strategy for themselves. mart home is an application of the Internet of Things (IoT), where a myriad of devices is connected to the Internet. Device data will be processed in the cloud to generate intelligence. Implementation of IoT, however, is difficult. An IoT supply chain involves multiple elements – devices, connectivity, gateways, carriers and the cloud. It takes more than one player to make it work. As such, appliance makers will have a hard time entering the IoT space on their own. U.S.-based Exosite wants to solve this problem. Established in 2009, the company entered the field of IoT when the term IoT was not even created. Exosite has provided IoT services exclusively all these years. Having worked with more than 200 clients, the company says it can offer secure, reliable, scalable and enterprise-level IoT solutions. The company recently teamed up with chipmaker ARM to launch an IoT service platform tailor-made for device makers. The platform integrate ARM’s mbed cloud and Exosite’s Murano IoT Platform. Device data is transmitted using the CoAP/DTLS interface first to ARM’s cloud, before sent via a secure HTTPS interface to Exosite’s Murano platform. While ARM’s mbed aggregates secured device data, Exosite’s Murano entails user and device management, application, data analysis and other value-added services. The device management functionality, for example, allows the administrator to monitor how different devices are performing. Murano also allows enterprise software integration, to enable ERP, CRM, etc. The solution is scalable, for Exosite has clients that deployed millions of devices. It is also flexible, as clients may add new features, or connect more products as they see fit later on, says Robert Yu, Exosite’s Director of Marketing & Business Development APAC. “We can provide production-ready, costeffective solutions for ARM’s device makers to shorten the time to market,” Yu said.

before. Artificial intelligence may tell us that leaving air conditioner on actually uses less energy than turning it off, the optimal door position to keep the cool air inside, how to place the lighting and other best interior design practices.” The very first step is to link different devices and then aggregate their data in the cloud. Exosite wants to help appliance manufacturers do this quickly. The company’s MicroVertical Engine offers firmware, Wi-Fi connectivity, cloud solution and user interface (mobile app) to save development effort for manufacturers. This will drastically lower the entry barrier and hasten the time to market for manufacturers, says Exosite. The company also points out that it can make customized solutions based on client demand. Its target customers include makers of air conditioners, fans, dehumidifiers. Exosite will help these manufacturers connect their devices to the Internet and the Murano platform, where data analysis and intelligent computation can be performed. Josie Chung, Marketing Manager at Exosite, said the Micro-Vertical Engine is an inclusive solution that is already integrated with Google Home and Amazon Alexa voice assistant, and will integrate with IFTTT later. “Hardware companies usually lack software talent, and our solution essentially saves them much development effort and costs,” she added.
Micro-Vertical engine Solution IoT is like Internet 2.0, while data mining and performing analytics in the cloud to derive intelligence information is the idea of Internet 3.0 and 4.0, according to Yu. “Through machine learning, we may arrive at something that we did not know
