AI, big data, voice control and more IoT technologies are applied to carry out the true “Smart Home.” For years, the smart home market always comes up with new ideas and innovative gadgets such as smart buttons, connected sensors, smart locks, multi-protocol controllers and so forth. These devices are more than singlepurposed. With the right and competent software platform, they can be the intelligent tools to realize the better business management and operation. Examples can be found in elderly care facilities, hotel room management, office energy saving or meeting room control and even in the retail sectors such as staffless shops. With the launch of Alexa for Business by Amazon, Werner Vogels, the CTO of Amazon, published a blog post to explain further how this technology may change our work life. More than auto adjustment of the meeting room settings and dial-in information, the technology can help co-working space rental services in a very efficient way. This issue we take a closer look into how voice command technology can be applied in the business world on page 10.

for All TrAdiTionAl devices Smart home is about connecting devices to the Internet. However, many appliances in existence today are embedded with infrared technology only. Taiwan-based AIFA Technology has developed an innovative solution to make traditional appliances smart, so that end-users may control multiple infrared devices, including TV, fans, air conditioner, etc., using their smartphone, from anywhere in the world.

T

oday there are billions of infrared appliances a ro u n d t h e w o r l d . Traditional TV, set-top box, air conditioner, etc. are all controlled via infrared remotes. One may think that these devices, in the age of Wi-Fi connectivity, will be phased out in the smart home evolution. But on the contrary, thanks to AIFA Technology’s innovation, they can all jump on the smart home bandwagon, to be connected to the Internet, enabling end-users to control them via smartphone or smart speakers. In the shape of a UFO that is small enough to be placed in the palm, AIFA’s i-Ctrl can send infrared signals to electronics like TV, set-top box, DVD player, air conditioner and stereo. The device also connects to Wi-Fi, allowing it to take commands via the Internet. As such, users can use their internet-connected phones to control electronics. i-Ctrl aims to bring greater convenience. A typical household has more than one TV and several

air conditioners, and as such, has multiple remote controls. But with i-Ctrl, the companion app provides a centralized user interface to control all the devices. Now there are no more hassles with finding remotes to turn on and off devices. “It’s more convenient with using the smartphone as a remote, because we carry it all the time. Also, smartphone allows you to control home appliances from anywhere in the world as long as there is Wi-Fi connection,” said AIFA General Manager Ni Wen-lu. i-Ctrl also has scheduling

and “scene” functions built-in. The former lets users turn on or off devices at a pre-set time. As such, homeowners who are on vacation, for example, may schedule the TV and lighting to turn on at a certain time of the day every day to make it look like someone is home, to prevent burglary. The “scene” function, on the other hand, can turn on or off multiple devices at once, to create a “movie mode,” for example, that dims the lights, turns on the TV and increases speaker volume at the same time.

Easy to sEt up and VoicE control i-Ctrl also features an easy setup process. Simply download the companion app, which works with both iOS and Android devices, and from the app, users will be able to connect their home devices to i-Ctrl and then start to control them with mobile phones. i-Ctrl’s infrared database

only speak, but they don’t have ‘hands’ to control many existing appliances,” Ni said. Indeed, smart speakers on the market today lack the infrared database to take control of traditional home appliances. “Whether it’s Apple, Google or other brands, they don’t have the capability to do that,” Ni added. stores transmission signals of more than 1,000 electronics brands, or 95 percent of devices around the world, according to AIFA. And a patented technology of AIFA allows i-Ctrl to learn any infrared signal immediately. It’s not a complicated process and end-users can set it up on their own in minutes. i-Ctrl can be connected to smart speakers to enable voice control as well. The device currently supports Amazon Alexa, which means users will be able to voice-control traditional home appliances from an Amazon Echo. The company plans to add Google Home and Apple HomeKit support in the near future. Smart speakers today are more commonly used to play music, to provide information such as weather update, and not for home appliance control. “They can

pursuing HigHEst Quality Founded in 1993, Taiwan-based AIFA Technology specializes in manufacturing infrared remotes that have been sold around the world. The company’s ISO 9000-compliant factory makes products which have met the U.S.’s FCC certification, Japan’s TELEC certifications, and Europe’s CE and Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) certifications. As a winner of the 2018 Taiwan Excellence Award, i-Ctrl is the company’s latest innovation. With hundreds of billions of infrared devices in existence today, many people around the world may find i-Ctrl very useful. Newer electronics that have Wi-Fi connectivity also come with infrared remotes, which

means infrared is unlikely to become obsolete any time soon. AIFA distinguishes itself by pursuing very high standards, allowing it to work with clients from Japan and Germany for more than 10 years, Ni said. “Japanese customers trust our quality and IC and product development capability. We have the right attitude to do things to meet the accuracy and standard requirement of Japanese companies that AIFA has been working for a long time.” “Creating a product like i-Ctrl requires specialized knowledge. Not many companies have worked on the infrared database for more than 20 years like us, and we have collaborated with Japanese and German firms that have very high quality standards. We are confident that we can be one of the best in the world in this field,” Ni said. AIFA is looking for committed business partners who are interested in marketing i-Ctrl in other countries, Ni noted. TEL: 886-7-7777128 FAX: 886-7-7777407 E-mail: aifa@aifa.com.tw

E x p l o r a t i o n Voice assistants are getting increasingly popular, and their applications have been extended from smart homes to enterprises. Today, they are mostly used for air conditioning and meeting room control, saving energy expenses and facilitating meeting procedures. They are getting smarter too, as companies use them to conduct data analytics and obtain business intelligence.

Voice Assistant Gets Smarter in the Office

oice control has been a key area of study in the field of home automation. Devices that humans use are getting smaller and smaller in the duration of technology evolution, beginning with desktop, laptop and tablet, then shifting to smartphone and wearable, before reaching the formless voice. Just as voice control can provide convenience in homes, the technology may provide similar benefit in offices. As people add automation and voice control experiences into their homes, it’s not uncommon for them to also integrate smart technology and voice control into their offices. As companies evaluate new kinds of technologies that suit their needs, the office environment has been undergoing a transformation in the last few years, according to home automation enabler Control4’s Senior Director of Product Marketing Brad Hintze. “Automation can make security, energy management, and room or building management easier, and we see small and midsize business owners who have Control4 in their home add it to their business property,” Hintze said. 10 mySMAhome.com 2018

With automation, a single voice command can power multiple rooms at once, to wake them up for a presentation by turning on the lights, lifting the shades and activating displays. “Instead of operating from a touchscreen, voice control makes it easy for users to adjust the room conditions with a command. Voice control can be used to manage automation in office meeting spaces, presentation rooms, lobbies, and more,”

conditioning is the largest source of energy consumption. As such, it may be connected to sensors and curtains, working together to save energy use. Ni Wen-lu, General Manager of automation company AIFA Technology, concurred that air conditioning control is the more common application in the commercial space, for people tend to forget to turn off air conditioners. In the meeting room, equipment that need to be controlled include projector, video conference equipment, lighting, air conditioner and curtains. Ideally they can all be adjusted with the push of a button, one single voice command or a switch. A voice assistant can start a meeting by moving the curtains and turning on the lights; switch on the presentation mode by turning on a projector and dimming the lights; and enable the discussion mode by turning off all equipment. “A large meeting room may have up to 16 curtains and multiple sets of lighting. The larger the space, the more equipment there is, and the more possible scenarios there are, and the more likely people will find automation tools handy,” said Brian Lin, founder of

Oplus, a Taiwan-based company that specializes in office automation. Also, office managers have budget and security concerns, and they want to be able to manage office equipment easily, Lin said.

CisCo spArk AssistAnt Seeing the demand for easier meeting control, Cisco recently launched Spark Assistant, which is designed specifically for this purpose. It aims to eliminate hassles like locating a meeting room, getting connected to the room, etc. “The right virtual assistant will help you be

70, which features 70-inch 4K screens and quad 5K cameras. The cameras are capable of facial recognition and people count, so that Spark Assistant will know who entered the room, who left the room and who is speaking. But Cisco wants to take Spark Assistant beyond joining and leaving meetings. It will become a full-fledged team member, helping to take notes, record meetings and book a meeting room. “Most voice assistants on the market are built for consumer use. The things we need at home like ‘Alexa, play Mozart' are very different from the things teams need at work like ‘Hey, Spark, pull up the presentation I drafted for this meeting,’” said Tim Tuttle, CTO of Cisco’s Cognitive Collaboration Group. “The biggest problem with enterprise adoption is crossing that chasm from ‘functional at home’ to ‘functional at work,’” Tuttle added. In the future, Cisco Spark Assistant will use and learn from workers’ calendar, company directory and worker activity. “This is a system that might recommend a person who should be included in the meeting because that person can add 12 mySMAhome.com 2018

value to the team. Computers do this well, while humans consistently don’t,” Tuttle explained.

AdvAnCed Ai in voiCe AssistAnt Virtual Assistant’s application in the office doesn’t stop with A/C control and meeting arrangement. There are companies working on developing virtual assistant’s natural language processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. Besides equipment control, virtual assistant may crunch data and perform analysis to generate insightful information. U.S.-based IT management company CapTech has developed a proprietary process for connecting data science with NLP to create enterprise solutions for predictive analytics. NLP may carry on a conversation with an understanding of intent, emotion and context. CapTech develop Alexa skills for on behalf of many Fortune 500 companies. One use case may be a manager asking “Alexa, how are my sales performance this quarter?” In response, Alexa replied, “You are down

2.5 percent.” The manager may followed up immediately by saying, “Really, why?” as opposed to “Why are my sale down 2.5 percent?” He doesn’t have to repeat himself, thus having a more natural conversational flow. CapTech uses machine learning and data science and write custom codes for different business requirement. “We can do something programmatically to find out why the sales are down, and that would be something much more difficult for a person to query, because they have to check four or five different systems, open multiple spreadsheet and do some analysis,” said Vinnie Schoenfelder, Chief Technology Officer at CapTech. The intelligent assistant may be applied for different purposes and industries. There are retailers that want to have voice services for either their employees or their customers. Still, some clients want to develop voice services that are B2B, enabling their business providers to order for them, check inventory, check delivery status and update orders, Schoenfelder added.

Without using popular platforms like Amazon Echo and Google Home, local voice systems are not connected to the Internet and there is no cloud processing. Operating in a private network, local voice systems offer better security, lower latency and more stable connectivity.

Local Voice Systems Enable Efficient Smart Home Control

tarting last year, voice control has been an important issue in the smart home space. People tend to be more familiar with Amazon Echo or Google Home when it comes to using voice to control home devices. The way it works is that upon receiving a voice command, a smart speaker will pass the voice to the cloud for processing before a control signal is passed to a home device.

A different way of doing it will be using local voice control, which does not require passing the command to the cloud via Wi-Fi. There are many advantages of using a local voice control system like low latency. It also runs on a more stable and secure internal network. In a local network environment, a voice command travels from a microphone to a gateway which then

passes the command to home devices. Because the signal does not travel to the Internet, lower latency can be ensured. Also, users do not need to worry about unstable Internet connection, because the signal is only passed around in the house. Since home devices are not linked to the Internet, hackers won’t have chances to control home devices and security can be ensured. The merits of local voice control are acknowledged by many smart home system providers. One of them is Taiwan-based Philio Technology Corp. Controlling every home device from the cloud sounds more complex than it needs to be, according to James Huang, the company’s CEO. “A simple task like opening curtains at home should not require processing in the cloud before sending a command back to the device.”

Drawback of Smart SpeakerS Another advantage of using a local voice system is that it does not require the purchase of an expensive smart speaker. Smart speakers from big companies 14 mySMAhome.com 2018

have great audio systems, which are usually more than sufficient for voice control scenarios. Also, a smart speaker may have up to 6-8 microphones embedded so that it can receive voices from different directions and for noise cancellation purpose. These functionalities, however, will add up to costs. As such, it may not be feasible for a user to place a smart speaker in every room, which is the ideal setting for voice control. Users should be able to access voice control anywhere at home. “Voice

control should not be constrained in a certain area. When in the bedroom, I don’t want to go to the speaker placed in the living room to turn off the light,” said Chen Wen-bin, Manager of the IoT Business Department at Wifly-City, a company that provides smart home solutions for the retail market.

alternative voice control Local companies that enable smart homes are rolling out alternatives to smart speakers. Philio, for example,

“ Voice control should not be constrained in a certain area. When in the bedroom, I don’t want to go to the speaker placed in the living room to turn off the light.”

plans to introduce a battery-powered speaker that has the shape and size of a baseball. The speaker may be embedded in the wall in the living room, kitchen, bedroom, etc., thus allowing a user to give voice command more conveniently. The product could be a good replacement to a smart speaker, the placement of which is constrained by the power line it connects to. Electronics manufacturer Good Way Technology has co-developed a smart panel which can receive and pass voice commands to other devices. The panel is embedded with a voice IC that performs voice recognition and processing. 20-30 voice commands are stored in the panel. A portable voice control device is more common. Unless being tapped or triggered by the wake-up word, the device is in the sleep mode to save battery power. Wifly-City has such device while Good Way has plans to develop and launch one in the near future. All these voice-receiving devices work by passing voice commands to a gateway that relay signals to home devices. A gateway essentially can 2018 mySMAhome.com 15

E x p l o r a t i o n

talk to almost every kind of home electronics. The chosen communication protocols, however, separate companies making gateways. Common standards Z-Wave, Zigbee, ULE and RF have all been used. IoT company Full Enterprise has developed local voice control by inserting control modules into devices. The company’s voice control may turn on one single device or multiple devices to enable a scene. In the future, Full Enterprise also plans to develop voice control on a smartphone to control home devices. “While voice control is convenient for all age groups, it is especially suitable for the elderly or the disabled,” Full Enterprise’s General Manager James Yih noted.

challengeS in making voice DeviceS “One of the main challenges of making voice-enabled devices is that voice can hardly be detected if the source is three meters away. Also, engineers need to figure out how to factor out background noises,” said Coco Chen, Deputy Marketing Director at China-based Leedarson Lighting,

which has enabled voice control for a variety of home devices, including lighting, curtains and TVs, made by Leedarson or other brands. Leedarson’s team of engineers have developed the needed computation power for noise cancellation and also tailor-made microphone designs for best voicereceiving effect, Chen added. DSP Group, which makes chips for a variety of communication products, believes that ULE is the better protocol choice. Tali Chen, CVP Corporate Development & Chief Evangelist at DSP, said that ULE is based on the DECT

technology that is used in cordless phones and therefore has better voice transmission capability. ULE also uses an interference-free spectrum. “As such, ULE has much, much better transmission range in both indoor and outdoor use cases, compared with other protocols like Wi-Fi, Z-Wave and Zigbee,” Chen said.

limitationS of local voice control Local voice control system has its drawbacks too. Compared with the cloud, the local voice IC does not have the voice processing power similar to that of the cloud, said CD Liu, Director of Good Way Technology’s SIoT Research and Development Division. The cloud is able to distinguish different accents, background noise and more accurately understand spoken words. It also has a much larger storage space, allowing for unlimited number of command storage. Nonetheless, local processing and cloud processing can co-exist. In fact, many companies have created products that can connect to the cloud as well as products that operate in a local network.

Solutions That Enable Voice Control in Smart Office Oplus E-Box Master Control The E-Box Master Control is an all-in-one system that can manage up to eight lighting circuits and eight digital inputs for scenario control switches, in addition to projector, air conditioner and curtain controls. It can switch on a “presentation scenario,” for example, by turning on lights simultaneously, turning the A/C to 26 degree Celsius, turning on projector, pulling the curtains and lowering the projection screen. All this can be accomplished via mobile app, Siri voice control or a wall switch with Oplus’ solution. Office applications include the “work mode” – when sensors detect employees at work, it will automatically turn on lights and the A/C, depending on the time of the day and temperature, to realize energy conservation. Users may call upon their voice assistant to start a meeting, and the command will turn on lights and A/C, for example; to turn on the presentation mode, which will turn on the projector and dim the lights; to turn on the discussion mode, which will shut off all the equipment. • Oplus • www.oplus-design.com

The universal bot essentially takes the user’s requests and determines which bot to call to tackle the task at hand, multi-tasking on the person’s behalf. Kore.ai’s interactive voice response (IVR) integration (channel) allows customers to integrate their IVR application flows with conversational bots built on Kore.ai platform. This integration allows synchronous or asynchronous https communication with IVR systems to further help customer support. The new channel, at a functional level, help companies to integrate their existing processes to the conversational bots to deliver better customer communication and faster query resolution.

experts Grasp ConneCted HoMe and BuildinG Market CHanCes in VietnaM Security, the irreplaceable DemanD Within multiple sectors of smart home, market professionals all look into home security as the door knocker in Vietnam. ION Smart from Vietnam, a distributor of IOTX Smartlife and Vivotek as well as a system integrator of residential security solutions, is an expert of integrating CCTVs, intercom, smart camera, access control, and E-parking systems. Gordon Tat, Managing Director of ION Smart, said that security is the main concern and demand in Vietnam. “When incidents occur, or for proactive damage prevention, our solutions connect the systems, homeowners, emergency care takers and authorities such as fire or police department,” Tat explained. Taiwan-based smart building and residential community solution provider, HomeScenario has seen the development potential in the country. HomeScenario enters Vietnamese smart home market since 2015 with its specialization in smart building and hotel projects. HomeScenario offers cloud-enabled building systems converging IP intercom, alarm, access control, video surveillance, concierge, and home automation, with IP intercoms as the core control and user interface. “As we deploy our building solutions around the world, we find that security is the key of smart home,” said Joel Liu, Vice President of HomeScenario, “and in Vietnam, demand for home security is irreplaceable.” Honeywell also values security control for house and

villa owners. “Every Vietnamese family needs to feel safe and comfortable, while being able to enjoy what matters: the people and things that make their house a home. Honeywell’s technology enables homeowners to stay in control of home security, fire systems, and air and water purification, creating a home with ease,” said Mai Trang Thanh, President of Honeywell Indochina.

uSer FrienDlineSS WalkS home technologieS into Vietnam To get acquaintance with end-users in Vietnam, industry players topped the user-friendly controls as the most important consideration. Commercial buildings, residential communities, condominiums, hotels or villas share a same idea: multiple housing units. This has great impact on the property developing cost. However, the comfort and convenience brought by smart home technologies is what really matters for buyer decisions. According to ION Smart and HomeScenario, users implementing total solutions concern mostly the experience of how they interact with home technologies. Easy control interfaces receive positive reviews from home users. Scheduling function or learning algorithms that bring real automation and connection between user and homes are the key anticipation. As a foreign company for Vietnam, HomeScenario brings precious experience from other markets, “Without transparent information like presales consultation and aftersales service, home technology is never complete,” said Liu, “it is challenging

but a reliable guarantee to gain users’ hearts.” While self-monitoring of home security is not yet prevalent in Vietnam, Phuongviet, a distributor of Hikvision in Vietnam, sees its potential of growth. “Entrylevel DIY consumer market is growing fast as smart home security concepts have been spreading among endusers. People can first experience the easy installation and manipulation of some products, and this may create another smart home wave in Vietnam,” said Pham Tuyet Phuong, Marketing Manager of Phuongviet. Further, with young and growing population in Vietnam, the modern, tech-oriented generation is expected to embrace IoT technologies in their homes, therefore pushing demand upward. According to ION Smart and Phuongviet, AI functions and voice control compatibility is interesting for local users with personalized scenes and management.

Smart technologieS make hotel gueStS Feel at home As home security solutions expand in Vietnam, basic items such as access control and security sensors are a must for new smart home projects, especially for the residential complex. Pioneering example can be found in Sakura Apartment in HCMC. Moving on to the development in hospitality industry, Liu of HomeScenario analyzed the different demand in hotel and villa. With smaller units but larger quantity, hotel projects tend to apply standardized application in every suite, including scene automation, curtain and lighting control, and voice-

Vietnam is one of the fastest-growing economies in ASEAN. Foreign investments target on the residential properties such as condominiums and landed housings as well as office and commercial real estates. And this has been driving new opportunities of connected products and smart solutions. Developers primely eye on big cities such as HCMC, Ha Noi and Da Nang, where network infrastructure is comparatively complete, urbanization is rapid, and population is in high density. Total solutions integrating multiple smart technologies are the prevalence for projects of smart homes, complex buildings, hotels or villas in the country.

command products. System integrators, in this case, have the dominance in hotel projects. On the other hand, villas are having larger-scale but less unit. Therefore, comprehensive solutions such as ventilation, access control and fire alarm that can be seamlessly combined with respective interior design is required. Designer of villas has final decision on the systems. All in all, hotels and villas equipped with modern smart home solutions gain positive feedback from their guest, driving a better profit for their business.

Smart home applicationS Seen in groWing areaS “The world is moving beyond stand-alone devices into an era where seemingly everything is connected, making connected home an inevitable trend in residential industry. That’s why we find enormous potential in this area and I am absolutely optimistic in IoT opportunities in Vietnam,” shared Thanh of Honeywell. The challenges in Vietnamese market is still lying in price and awareness. Low-priced products from China are still competitive and widely deployed. “To step forward, decision makers and end-users in the market need more training upon technologies and applications to level up their awareness on smart home systems and solutions,” indicated Phuong of Phuongviet. For next step, companies are looking to smarter solutions not only for the high-end properties but the rising middle-class in vicinal cities. Home security solutions and automation control can be expected to apply in high-class trains, campus, rental offices, factories and training center in the coming future with a prospect to realize smart living in Vietnam.

Smart Home Standard iS WhAt

We ReAlly Need foR NoW iN VietNAM: ho Chi MiNh City ReAl eStAte ASSoCiAtioN

As smart home gradually catches attention of property developers, smart home and building automation solutions for high-end residential buildings are the common interest of real estate firms in Vietnam. Le Hoang Chau, Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City Real Estate Association, indicated that energy control will be the second largest demand after home security. However, smart home is still a long way to go in Vietnam, and a standard for this industry must be set up to build a better connected living.

Please introduce Ho cHi MinH city real Q estate association (Horea).

A Ho Chi Minh City Real Estate Association is a NGO with more than 800 enterprises and individual members, including real-estate developers, investors, constructors and the dealers. The association also has special members like bankers as well as both domestic and overseas funds. Important members in HoREA include some of the leading property developers in Vietnam such as VinGroup, Novaland, FLC, Hung Thinh Corp, Nam Long Corp, and Dai Quang Minh; and constructors like Hoa Binh, Coteccons. Just to name a few.

WHat kind of ProPerty Projects take uP Q tHe Most Market sHare in tHe Housing

Market in VietnaM?

A Currently we have no concrete market numbers about the proportion, however, we clearly witness a sparkle in the residential building markets in Vietnam. Smart home or building automation solutions are now the common interest of all the real estate firms, as most of the profit we are gaining comes from the residential sector, especially, in the luxury, or high-end building segment. Apart from residential buildings, the latest trend is the condotel, which is a condominium but operated as a hotel, offering short-term rentals. Condotels are getting hotter day by day among growing property

developments in Vietnam. Pioneering projects in Vietnam, such as Vinhomes Central Park, Sala City, or Phu My Hung, not only construct buildings but also create a complete living environment for residents. With the automation system integrated to people’s lives, residents are connected with neighborhood parks, parking lots, shopping malls, entertainment centers in a project.

WHat are tHe Most Q PoPular sMart

HoMe solutions in VietnaM?

A Home security, definitely. It is the biggest part of the pie, as we could easily set up a security system without rewiring or changing any interior decoration and design. Moreover, there are plenty of choices for home security products in affordable prices.

their professional technical team based on field research and reports of product specifications. In other cases, constructors like Hoa Binh and Coteccons can decide for systems as they own design team themselves.

in VietnaM, WHat is Q Potentially driVing

sMart HoMe solutions forWard?

Though security solutions are dominating, another upcoming trend is energy control. In fact, we can barely see the separation of energy control and home automation. I would say that “green energy” and “energy saving” are the key words that catch buyers’ eyes. Imagine if you want to save energy usage for lighting, you could simply open the curtains. Some families have set up a solar-energy system integrated with home automation control. The two systems support each other while users only need a few clicks on their smartphone app for management. Similar implementation in Vietnamese homes is potential in the near future. As for the popular brands in Vietnam, I would say products from G7 countries are preferred among high-class homeowners who spent the most for such equipment. For price-oriented markets, Chinese brands and products still own great prevalence.

in deVeloPing ProPerty Projects, WHat is Q tHe Working Pattern in VietnaM?

A For those big and mega-scale projects, decision making depends totally on the developers, as they are in charge of designing and engineering all systems from the initial stage. Cost, energy consumption, and multiple factors are taken into their consideration. In most cases, the president of the developer group is the decision maker. Decisions are supported by consultation and discussion with

A While choosing smart home systems, quality and price of the solutions are the two most important requirements whilst technical issues like cross-brand compatibility are also a major topic. The public is recently talking much about Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things. As a result, in larger scales like smart cities, compatibility of connected devices and solutions will be an advantage to build a complete system. The government and the city council have just agreed on a project to build HCMC to be a “Smart City”. The agreement will bring a huge chance for manufacturers as such development will start from basic infrastructures, creating large demand for equipment, technology, software, and total solution. During the first phase until 2020, there will be a focus on cloud computing infrastructure, big data analysis, building a shared data warehouse, and developing an open data ecosystem for the city. For those new residential projects, I think “smart” isn’t just a trend but a “must-have”. In addition, a standard for everything in smart home industry and related education are what we really need for now. References from associations or manufacturers, as well as precious experience from industry leaders are a key step before mass implementations begin. We are looking forward to some seminars that can actively stimulate discussion in smart home industry.

Consumer Spending via Voice Assistant to Increase Six-Fold in Three Years

V

oice assistants will become a dominant mode of consumer interaction over the next three years, with shoppers who use the technology willing to spend 500 percent more than they currently do, based on a survey of more than 5,000 consumers in the U.S., the UK, France and Germany. US-based IT consulting firm Capgemini said consumers are developing a strong preference for interacting with companies via voice assistants. The research found that today 24 percent of respondents would rather use a voice assistant than a website. However, in the next three years, this figure will rise to 40 percent. Up to 31 percent said they will prefer a voice assistant interaction to visiting a shop or bank. Voice assistant users are currently spending three percent of their total consumer expenditure via voice assistants, but this is expected to increase to 18 percent in the next three years, reducing share of physical stores and websites.

70% of U.S. Consumers Worry about Being Hacked via Smart Home Devices

A

round 70% of consumers are worried that hackers will intrude their privacy via connected home devices, according to a survey published by iQor, a managing service provider. Older generations have greater concerns than the younger ones. According to the survey, four out of five baby boomers have this fear, while millennials show 17% less concern on this issue. Millennials grew up in an environment filled with digital applications and social media,

42 mySMAhome.com 2018

so they have less concern about privacy. However, around half of the millennial respondents did show concerns on connected devices listening to their conversations. “Millennials have different use cases for smart home technology, so it’s not so much one generation being more open to smart home technology but the priorities around types of products and perceived value of those solutions, iQor COO Autumn Braswell said.

Global Smart Home Market to Grow to US$107.4 Billion by 2023

T

he global smart home market is expected to reach an estimated US$107.4 billion in five years, with an annual growth rate of 9.5 percent from 2018 to 2023, according to a report by ResearchAndMarkets. The major growth drivers for this market are increasing awareness related to safety and security, increasing consumer need for simplicity and personalized experience, and the growing adoption of cloud-based technologies. The future of the smart home market looks attractive with opportunities in the home safety and

security, appliance, entertainment, lighting, HVAC, healthcare and kitchen applications, the report says. Emerging trends include development of voice assistant technology for high-end automated households, emergence of air quality sensor devices that measure volatile organic compounds and growing adoption of video enabled drones. The research forecasts that the safety and security market is expected to remain the largest segment due to the increasing need for continuous monitoring services to reduce the risk of crime, burglary and theft.

33% of Consumers Have Trouble Setting Up Smart Home Devices

A

ccording to a recent survey conducted by management service provider iQor, more than one in three adults in the U.S. have experienced issues setting up or operating a connected device. While IoT devices are supposed to make life easier, users are actually struggling with setup and installation issues. Consumers are spending on average 1.5 hours to resolve the issues and one hour working with customer service, according to the survey. About 22% of the respondents couldn’t resolve their problems after trying all possible means or simply gave up,

and returned the product for a refund. However, iQor’s research shows that 15% to 30% of the returned products actually have no problems. The percentage reaches as high as 65% for some product categories. Consumers who purchase DIY connected devices include early adopters and millennials. They tend to spend more time trying to solve technical issues because they are more confident in their technology knowledge. It means that most customers first rely on themselves before calling customer service for help.

Google Home Grabs 31% Market Share after Holiday Season

A

ccording to a report by the Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), 18 million units of smart speakers were sold in the fourth quarter of 2017. U.S. consumers now own about 45 million units of smart speakers. Amazon holds 69% of the market share (about 31 million units) while Google has 31% (around 14 million units). Back in June 2017, there were only 20 million smart speakers sold in total and Google barely had a share in the market. Due the launch of Google

Home Mini and the company’s clever marketing strategies, its products have picked up and had more sales during the holiday season. “The Echo Dot continues to account for over half of all Echo units sold, and increased that share by a couple of percentage points in the holiday quarter. Google introduced its Home Mini toward the start of the holiday shopping quarter, and it grabbed over 40% of Google Home sales in the quarter,” said CIRP in the report.

Mobile App and Intercom Essential in Smart Residential Communities

Smart home is about making lives easier. It’s about connecting home devices, door locks, sensors to the Internet so that they can talk to one another. But the so-called Internet of Things (IoT) will have various application modes, depending on the type of residences where it is applied.

I

oT will be applied differently in a single house and in an apartment. In the former case, a smart home is set up just within a single household. In the latter case, there are public spaces and equipment and facilities that will be shared among residents in an apartment. As such, the concept of IoT will be implemented with its unique characteristics in a residential community. In order to pool information and make it available for all residents in a community, a mobile app is often used. Smart home enabler Vivint, for example, recently introduced the Streety app that allows homeowners to view video footage from their neighbors’ security cameras. In a standard smart home deployment, users will be able to watch footage only from their own cameras. With the Streety app, however, homeowners will be able to watch footage or live streaming from all participating cameras in a community, thus greatly enhancing their visibility. “When something happens like a bike is stolen, sometimes you have a good angle, sometimes you don’t, depending on where your cameras are,” said Colby Winegar, VP of Strategic Business Development at Vivint. “It’s a very cumbersome process if you have to go down the whole neighborhood to get the clips.” Through a network of shared residential cameras, the Streety app allows

44 mySMAhome.com 2018

users in a community to keep an eye on their kids, cars and property through live video feeds and use recorded video clips to investigate incidents. Sfty, a startup based in Norway, has developed a fire-detection system that similarly pools resources in a community. The Sfty system links smoke detectors in every apartment in a building. And when fire is detected in one apartment, alerts will be sent to other residents in the building via the Sfty app. Since the residents are notified early, they have sufficient time to evacuate the building, according to Espen Schrøder, Chief Operating Officer at Sfty. Because the Sfty system knows exactly from which apartment the fire started, the fire department will know where to go first, Schrøder added. The Internet-connected smoke detector also has a motion sensor built-in to detect burglary. When motion is detected in one apartment, a neighbor next door may also be notified through the Sfty app. The neighbor can then verify if there was indeed a burglary by checking if the apartment’s door has been opened. “Sfty’s all-in-one safety device has smoke detector, burglar alarm, temperature sensor and humidity sensor functionalities. You can invite friends, family and neighbors to your network to monitor your device and be notified in case of an alert,” Schrøder added.

App As service portAl in ApArtments A mobile app can also be utilized to manage access control in an apartment. Malaysia-based apartment solution provider i-Neighbor has developed an app to turn a resident’s smartphone

into an elevator or garage access card. With the app, a resident will only be able to get off on his or her floor and common areas. The mobile app can also serve as an intercom to speak with visitors at the front door. Also, there is a panic button functionality in the app to instantly contact security or emergency contacts in case of an emergency. In fact, the mobile app has more than 20 functionalities to provide apartment related services. Among them is facility booking for a gym, badminton court, etc. i-Neighbor also makes hardware like smart locks, which, if installed on a public facility, can be unlocked via the mobile app during the booked period. i-Neighbor’s Business Development Manager Aiden Teh said the company’s competitiveness lies in the hardware development capability enabled by its parent company Fingertec. As an access control solution provider, Fingertec has been selling hardware products for 18 years, Teh said.

intercom As the User interfAce Another device that is commonly deployed in apartment buildings is intercom, which allows residents to talk to neighbors or call the management. In terms of security capability, the intercom also has access control, alarm system and surveillance functions. “Intercom is the user interface to provide apartment services and the portal of smart buildings,” said Joel Liu, Vice President of Taiwan-based smart building

Joel liu, vice president of homescenario

solution provider HomeScenario. HomeScenario’s intercom allows residents to see and talk with their visitors before unlocking the door. Upon granting access, the elevator will be triggered to go to the first floor for the guest, who may reach only the resident’s floor, Liu said. To offer surveillance, the intercom may be used to view live video feed from a security camera. In addition, HomeScenario’s intercom also has a panic button and can send push notifications to smartphones of the closed ones if there is an accident. AmRoad Technology Inc. provides a very similar intercom system, which is designed to integrate functionalities from SOS button, camera monitoring, door access, to facial recognition and license plate recognition. “Layers of functionalities may be added one by one per client demand,” said James Su, President of AmRoad. Su pointed out that a fire or life-threatening accident require much faster response time. The intercom, besides being a smoke detector, can record a SOS voice message to pass to family members. The company uses the SIP protocol, which is used in telephones, to send the SOS message. “A phone call to another country will always connect, but it may not be the case if the call is made via computers,” Su said. Wi-Fi connection may be suitable for public notices in which great amounts of data are broadcast while immediate transmission is not required, he explained.

the proActive cAmerA Cameras play important roles when it comes to maintaining home security. They are deployed in almost any communities. Netherlandsbased Amaryllo International B.V offers IP cameras that take a “proactive approach” to prevent intrusion or burglary, according to the company’s president CT Marcus Yang. The cameras are embedded with high-power CPU to perform visitor auto tracking. The cameras’ AI can distinguish people, animals and different faces instantly. “The camera will say ‘Hello’ when it sees a visitor, recognizes who you are, so that a potential thief or burglar knows he or she is being monitored,” Yang said.

CES 2018 WRAP UP:

Tech Trends and the Next of Smart Home Industry

C

ES 2018 (Consumer Electronics Show) unveiled industry’s new year with focuses on voice control, artificial intelligence and ecosystems. Google Assistant found a great spotlight at the exhibition, replacing Amazon Alexa which shined the last two years. Companies including Vivint Smart Home, LG, iHome, and One Link from First Alert showcased their technologies controlled by the Google voice assistant. Most smart home companies presented their applications working with voice assistants this year – the majority have worked with Amazon Alexa and many announced to support Google this year. This natural way to control home appliances via speakers seems to change the smart home scene which used to require users to control devices via various mobile apps. And, just like how Alexa and Google Assistant connect smart home devices across manufacturers, forming an ecosystem has become many companies’ focuses. Samsung, for instance, said to launch a new “SmartThings app” in Spring 2018. The new app will enable users to control every SmartThingssupport gadgets via one single portal and combine the current Samsung Connect, Smart Home and Smart View apps together. Samsung’s voice assistant, Bixby, will start to support its smart TVs and smart refrigerator

Family Hub this year. The assistant might be integrated into the SmartThings app and create an ecosystem similar to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

Home-gadget ecosystem across Brand In addition to ecosystems that go across manufacturers, companies are also starting to create home-gadget ecosystem across its brand. Nest went from thermostats to home security system and smart doorbell; and Ring began with smart doorbell and entered security cameras. Home companies aren’t making one single device, but creating a home appliance ecosystem for customers to strengthen the brand. Kohler, the American kitchen and bath appliances maker, attended CES for the first time and showcased its series of connected products on the platform called Kohler Konnect. The company presented a smart mirror, smart touchless faucet, smart shower system and smart toilet. All devices above will be controlled by a mobile app or via major voice assistants. Users can, for instance, ask assistants to adjust the temperature of the toilet seat, turn on the faucet and pour 6 cups of water, dim the light around the mirror and set up a preferred shower scene.

Looking into cHips As for chip makers who support all smart technologies to happen, integrating artificial intelligence (AI) will be the next highlight. Ambarella’s imaging processor integrating AI capability can recognize objects locally; and NXP aims to focus on AI to empower behavior prediction in the connected home. Multiprotocol will also become an important industry goal to support devices across various communication standards. Silicon Labs, one of the chip makers that dig into multiprotocol, expects to see devices supporting Bluetooth

mesh networking to grow. “We are seeing manufacturers ask for Zigbee 3.0, proprietary products, and we expect the growth of Bluetooth mesh networking within few years,” said Tom Pannell, the director of IoT Marketing at Silicon Labs.

‘cooL-to-Have’ to ‘mustHave’ Walking around the smart home exhibition area at CES 2018, most companies presented similar product categories, but, the differentiation in between wasn’t big. The smart home companies are competing harshly in a few product categories. And, what’s the next? “The ‘must-have’ feature in the smart home market hasn’t yet been found,” said Avi Barel, Business Development Director of ULE Alliance. Avi Barel, Business Most smart home Development Director of ULE Alliance. features and product value are ‘cool-to-have’ but not ‘must-have,” therefore, it will still take few years for smart home products entering the mass market. Creating a “must-have” value might take time, however, some companies are already trying new services in order to add value to smart home devices. Vivint Smart Home, one of the biggest smart home service provider in the U.S., announced a new service called Streety, aiming to utilize the smart home devices and protect the whole neighborhood. Even though homeowners have installed a security camera at the front door, some intruding and stealing behaviors might not be fully seen via their own cameras. Sometimes the camera from neighbors help recover the original crime situation. That’s where Streety came in. from their security cameras and helps the ones who got a dead spot on their cameras. It uses third-party verification for identity and address check. More, it creates a platform environment so that security cameras which aren’t provided by Vivint Smart Home could also join the platform and help create a secure neighborhood. Smart home product manufacturers, meanwhile, are seeking different business models other than selling through retailers in the market. Hive offers subscription plans in UK and the U.S., and small-scale companies such as Senses from Dension and startup Sensative are bringing their smart home devices into commercial buildings in order to create a bigger revenue. It will still take a couple of years for smart home products to become mainstream. But just for this year, “how Nest entering home security market with lower price products and how serious is Amazon towards the smart home market will make significant influences in the industry,” said Colby Winegar, Colby Winegar, the vice president of Vice President of Strategic Business Strategic Business Development at Vivint Smart Home. Smart Water Monitor The smart water monitor of Streamlabs is equipped with advanced ultrasonic technology to stay tuned to the pulse of users’ water flow, delivering accurate usage data in real time. Simply mount the monitor to the main water line in minutes without pipe-cutting required, and then the monitor is ready to protect home from water wasting and damage. Users can customize the real-time alerts to fit individual’s water habits and adjust sensitivity while users are away. P h y n P l u s Wa t e r M o n i t o r i n g S y s t e m b y Phyn, Belkin’s newest venture, uses patented, high-definition pressure wave sensing to alert user the second a leak is detected, mitigate costly damage through automatic shutoff, and diagnose potential problems in the plumbing system before they become an issue. Using the compatible app, users are able to get notifications in real time and shut down water remotely. A daily diagnostic “Health Checks” will notify users of irregular pressure levels and potential ultra-low leaks. Guardian by Elexa is a system of leak detectors and a valve controller that work together to detect leaks and shut off water automatically, preventing further damage. Guardian installs simply with no tools, no plumber, and no pipe cutting. The leak detectors communicate directly with the valve controller, avoiding the need for hubs or other hardware. The water detectors is allowed to be placed up to 1000 inches away from the valve controller.

CES 2018 REPORT Smart Home Technologies

Branch Out into Other Industries

S

mart home technologies were developed for the use case of home. However, they’ve been seen more and more in other industries as well – including hotels, retails and more.

The FirsT BaTTleField is hoTel rooms “Alexa, make the room cooler.” “Alexa, show me some live sport games.” You might hear this in a home equipped with connected devices supporting Alexa. But, when you hear this, “Alexa, get me a room service.” It’s actually a hotel room. Voice assistants have brought lots of convenience that we could control many devices with our voices and eliminating the remote controllers. In addition to homes, hotels are looking into this technology and seeing if this can offer greater comforts for their guests. The Wynn and Marriott have installed some Echo devices in their hotel rooms to bring voice-control to their customers. Service providers serving hotels such as Volara and Voiceio have appeared in the market due to this voice-control trend. Volara, for example, has served 25 hotels in the U.S. and the voice applications it built for hotels have interacted with 400,000 guests in 2017. In hotels, however, smart speakers are required to be tailored into different needs from homes. For example, the voice assistants would be more greeting for service reasons, and guests would need some voice skills to tell the WiFi password, request for room services or give recommendations for attractions

around. Some smaller-scale companies which produce smart speakers but have less resources than Amazon or Google, are now entering the hotel industry and customize devices for them. Clazio, a startup creates devices combining Google Home and a tablet screen, Andrej Lukács, has worked with hotels International in China and designed Sales Manager customized smart speakers at Senses, Dension for them. Bonjour, a smart alarm clock featuring voice assistants, is working with hotels as well. Its own smart assistant with knowledge of English and French, and the company designs various skills and trigger words for hotel partners.

Building new shopping experiences Retail stores is another use case. In a store installed with various senses and other connected devices. It could offer a “future shopping experience.” Senses, a company under audio devices maker Dension’s umbrella, uses its technologies to help retailers imagine another possible shopping visit. In a shoe store, each pair of shoes will have a smart light bulb installed under. As a consumer looks for size-10 running shoes for men, all products match the

keyword will light up to help customers find the suitable ones faster. Another example, a coffee shop can install smart lighting and audio players. Under pre-scheduled settings, it will play a morning playlist with an energetic lighting during the day, and the evening playlist with warmer lights later. It therefore creates the atmosphere automatically for the customers visiting the place.

iT’ll Be everywhere Smart home technology providers and device manufacturers are extending their expertise into other industries and see if they can help something with. It’s a great way to explore business opportunities since the competition in the sector is pretty high now. “You look around and you all see the same stuffs. People come here don’t ask what it is. But ask how are we different, how can we differentiate?” said Andrej Lukács, the international sales manager at Senses, Dension. In order to differentiate itself, Senses goes into commercial spaces with home technologies and try to bring a new retail experience to customers. Sensative, a Sweden startup, has pushed their window and door sensors, Strips, into other channels as well. Due to its thin and blend-in design, Strips can be installed right by the window edge without users sensing the device. Sensative has worked directly with window manufacturers to bring its sensors into homes and commercial buildings. What other applications could be inspired by smart home technologies? For instance, temperature sensors can be installed in fresh food transportation; humidity sensors can be used in irrigation systems; and Alexa is starting to enter our cars and offices since Amazon launched new services and partnerships. “I believe, wherever you see smart home today, it will go into buildings, industries, agriculture – everywhere,” said Cees Links, the general manager wireless connectivity at Qorvo.

Smart Mirror The smart mirror of COMMAX is automatically set and plug-and-play right away, serving not just a mirror but users’ personal assistant with a Full HD touch display. Users can access calendar, weather information, and public notice every day, or connect the smart mirror with home security and healthcare devices to enhance home monitoring. The mirror is applicable for household, hotel, clothing retail stores and beauty shops.

CES 2018 REPORT Living Independently in a Smart Home:

Elderly Care A

t CES 2018, elderly care is a popular offering among display topics. SMAhome talks to some specialists to share their insights

ConneCted Home teCHnology Helps Imaging a house equipped with sensors – from bedside, kitchen passway to toilet flushes. After a few weeks of installation, the cloud computing system connecting with the sensors in an elderly home knows this person usually gets up between 7:40 am to 8 am. If the sensor by the bed hasn’t detected a motion until 8:30 am, the system will automatically notify the family members. Another data could also help. A sensor at living room and the other by the front door can work together and the back-end system will know how fast this elder person usually walk. When it detects that it takes much more time than usual, maybe something went wrong and the system generates alerts. IoT aren’t just a term composed by sensors, “it’s about a service. It delivers to the elderly who want to live home alone,” said Cees Links, the general manager wireless connectivity at Qorvo.

56 mySMAhome.com 2018

More proactive systems exist as well. For example, communication protocol from ULE Alliance allows IoT devices to talk to each other. Unlike Zigbee or Z-wave, however, it transmits voices. If an elderly fell down in the bedroom, this person can call for help, then the nearest sensor will receive this message and send it to voice assistant Alexa sitting in the kitchen for further actions, such as making a call with family members. “IoT capability total changed how to protect the elderly,” said Rafi Zauer, the head of marketing at Essence. With the IoT technology, we can now remotely from anywhere in the world view real-time situation on a mobile app and receive alerts when something unusual happens. “All of these was not possible before we have IoT.”

ASSA ABLOY Acquires Phoniro in Sweden for Elderly Care ASSA ABLOY has acquired Phoniro, the largest player within integrated digital key management solutions and alarm for home care and nursing homes in the Nordic region. Phoniro offers software and hardware keyless solutions for smart homes and healthcare occasions, which helps healthcare personnel to focus on care taking for the elders. “I am very pleased to welcome Phoniro into the ASSA ABLOY Group. Phoniro constitutes a strategic addition to the Group and reinforces our position in the market for elderly care,” says Johan Molin, President and CEO of ASSA ABLOY.

Technologies used in the elderly home look like an extension from the smart home sector. However, they work in different fashions. General concept of smart home currently focuses on users, proactively adjusts elements in their homes, such as lighting, temperature, sound or door lock. As for the elderly homes, they need specific monitoring and they are less actively at home. It’s more about discovering the abnormal situations and reporting. “It’s called passive monitoring. Just to know that they are safe,” said Zauer. Voice assistants that gradually become mainstream in the smart home sector, also play a different role in the houses of the elderly living alone. In an usual smart home, a voice assistant might spend most of the time playing music, telling weather information and doing daily news briefing. In an elderly home, however, homeowners don’t need to manage their schedules with the speakers. They want to know if they will receive help by using their voices in an emergency situation the most. Although voice assistants receive great attention in the current market, “how to find more relevant application to use in the elderly home context, will be the next challenge,” said Zauer.

possibility in tHe future Security systems for the elderly who live alone are provided in two ways. Telecommunication companies and insurance companies provide these solutions in one of their offerings. They become the service providers because they know the user base and technology infrastructures. This channel offers pure home-care services. The other channel integrates connected home devices and systems with medical devices. Solutions, for example, provided by Climax Technology connect medical devices with home systems via Bluetooth. Then, for instance, when a blood pressure machine detects unusual data, it can tell the connected home system and trigger related alerts to families and healthcare providers. “Elderly care market is growing in double digits now, especially in Asia and countries like Japan,” said Zauer. In addition to finding more relevant applications in the sector, how possibly to create comfort with technologies for loneliness from living alone, will also be a big challenge, Zauer said.

lexa, play my favorite playlist!” Alexa replies: “Ok, I will play your favorite playlist.” A few seconds later the first melodious sounds are heard from the loudspeakers. At the same time the blind moves up slowly and the sunlight enters the bedroom. The coffee machine also starts its function. All this happens while the residents are still in bed. What a perfect start to the day! These are made possible by the digital networking of domestic engineering and household appliances, which put the residents in a position to control the applications of daily life from anywhere. No need to get up because one’s wishes can be realized by not only conventional installed switches, but also conveniently with smartphone, tablet or via voice control. Aside from the direct control, there is also the option of controlling functions automatically at a defined time. Thanks to timing, for example, the kitchen can be heated in advance for a cozy breakfast on Sunday.

over many of our daily tasks and make life as pleasant as possible,” emphasizes Mike Mustapha, Managing Director of Business Unit Building Products. “Additionally, the products and services of various suppliers are attuned to each other and can be flexibly networked, which make living in the smart home more versatile.” The cloud-based voice service Amazon Echo and the home audio system Sonos or Philips Hue lamps can be integrated into smart home systems. These digital assistants allow the lights, heating or even complete living scenes with suitable illumination and music to be controlled. In this way, the smart home takes over much more than the daily routine, it combines individual living scenes according to personal wishes for all occasions. “Residents can combine different functions in a comfort scene and call them up with a tap of the finger,” explains Mustapha. For example, a previously defined scene for a cozy afternoon of reading in the living room can be activated: a room with a pleasant temperature, a reading lamp switched on above the sofa and the favorite radio station playing in the background.

PleAsAnt AtmosPhere At the Press of A bUtton If visitors spontaneously announce themselves in the afternoon – no problem! with guests. “To create the right atmosphere it is important to provide the right kind of illumination”, explains Mustapha. “Thanks to intelligent light control, the host can design individual light scenes with which several lamps can be simultaneously controlled, specifing the light intensity and the color suitable for the occasion.” The reading lamp goes out at a touch of a button and the dimmed light above the dining table goes on instead. Also the audio control can be integrated into the scene, for a discreet sound of music in the background. Should the homeowner want to wind down with a film, they can simply turns their living room into an entertainment center. “Hi-Fi, audio and video systems can be networked with the Sonos home sound system”, according to Mustapha. “This creates a cinema atmosphere and rousing sound when watching series and films.” Film fans create the right atmosphere for an exciting film by combining and calling up the appropriate comfort scene. The scene changes at the touch of a button: blinds move down, lights dim and the color shade changes from a sociable orange to a cool blue. Before the residents go to bed, a tap with the finger on the everything-off switch is sufficient for the entire lighting to

switch itself off. This ensures an undisturbed nights sleep and enables the evening’s elements to be controlled easily.

eQ-3 Continues to extend solutions for Aging independenCe

S

tanding in a crowd of smart home providers, eQ-3 remain optimistic in its market strategy. From the company’s perspective, attracting sales is easy with products that can excite consumers. Focusing on how to excite consumer is the key to success. But how is this achieved? “One needs to have simple starter kits that are easily explained at the POS. The products need to be very easily installed and configured – with no technical excuses or specialties,” emphasized Bernd Grohmann, CEO of eQ-3 AG. “Consumers are not excited in finding little differences that make devices under the same ‘standard’ not interoperable,” Grohmann added. eQ-3 finds that once homeowners start using smart home, they are likely to extend the solution into additional applications. To accommodate such idea, comprehensive line of truly interoperable and sustainable products is required. “Ten years’ availability appears to be the minimum requirement for smart home devices. Reliable product functionality as well as secure data privacy of eQ-3, verified by trustworthy VDE, are our commitment to consumer,” said Grohmann. With a growth of 154% compared to the previous year, Homematic IP continues to set clear positions in the smart home market, and has achieved almost 70% of revenue growth in retail. As eQ-3 products allow for white-label and OEM, growing number of providers such as Deutsche Telekom RWE, innogy, and Bosch are examples.

With over 60 product available in Homematic ip, eQ-3 launches Homematic ip Wired at light+Building 2018 in frankfurt, adding a complete range of Bus-based, wired smart devices that can be transparently integrated with Homematic ip wireless devices. the new launch further underlines the value of using ipv6 as the base standard for communication in all devices.

Comprehensive solution to Deal with aging population Since years, eQ-3 has been providing solutions for the aging elderly to enable independent control of heating, lighting, ventilation, window shades, and doors, all in one press of a button or voice command. To push forward the open system, eQ-3 has made available of all the software of CCU2 central controller for Homematic IP on GitHub. The associated license allows users to make customized changes or additions to the software. Correspondingly, various system integrators have made this software package the basis of their own commercial offerings. Instead of focusing on medical questions, eQ-3 targets

the need and desire of people and improves their comfort, convenience as well as safety. “Elderly care in smart home lets the elders to live in their loved homes longer, reducing cost compared to living in retirement homes,” said Grohmann, “by working with licensed Homematic IP partners targeting ‘aging independently’, eQ-3 is very open to add more companies like healthcare and wellness providers into our partner programs.”

Continuous personnel training to FaCe ongoing market Challenge The steadily growing Homematic IP range includes product applications of indoor climate, security, light and shading, weather and environment as well as numerous accessories. In January 2018, a Homematic IP device was again the winner in Stiftung Warentest, a leading German testing organization for multimedia and consumer goods. Homematic IP’s Q-Label smoke alarm system was ranked first among multiple smart home smoke detectors. Facing the competitive smart home market, eQ-3 believes the exact talent matching of their team will make them stand out from international smart home players. “We are extending our efforts in initial academic education and continuous personal development, offering an attractive alternative to the ambiguity of both financiallydriven large corporations and VC-funded startups,” explained Grohmann confidently.

Voice control not enough to enable Smart home Security: ViVint

O

ne of the biggest challenges in implementing smart technologies in a residential community is navigating the wide selection available today. And the burden is often on property managers to identify devices that will be most valuable to their residents, said Harrison Jenkins, director of platform products at Vivint Smart Home. Installation is also a challenge. Most people have never installed a smart door lock, doorbell camera or security sensor before, let alone integrated them into a complete smart home system. Ongoing support and maintenance for a smart home system is also important to help property managers manage their operational costs. Vivint believes professional support is required to ensure security and to implement smart homes. While big companies like Amazon and Google are pushing hard for smart home, by promoting Amazon Echo and Google Home speakers, voice control is just “a” user interface, not “the” user interface, said Colby Winegar, VP of Strategic Business Development at Vivint. “You can’t view camera with a voice,” Winegar pointed out. Amazon Echo and Google Home is like the hub of do-it-yourself (DIY) products, but it’s really tough to get all the security systems, smart locks and smart thermostats installed. “You still need like a Vivint type solution for the security, the lights, cameras and that part of the system,” Winegar said. Vivint smart home systems can feature smart locks, lighting, cameras, thermostats and a variety of security sensors, including door/window sensors and motion and glass break detection. “The overall security of almost any community is the direct result of the security of its individual residences, including rental properties,” Jenkins said. Vivint Smart Properties is a solution designed for rental property owners. The service offers a complete security solution and smart home system to residents with professional installation. Property managers can also manage tenant service requests and vacant units from anywhere. This includes providing keyless entry for staff or contractors, and controlling HVAC system usage. Tenants can also see when someone was given access to their home.

“the overall security of almost any community is the direct result of the security of its individual residences, including rental properties.”

Harrison Jenkins, director of platform products at Vivint Smart Home

Smart Home adoption to Grow In the smart home security market, Vivint currently has 1.3 million customers, second only to ADT. Nonetheless, Vivint has just 4-5 percent market share, so there is still much room for growth, Winegar said. Between 600,000 and 700,000 of Vivint’s customers have at least one automation device at home, and Winegar believes the adoption will grow in the years to come. “The number of customers who have a security system with some smart home devices attached to it is likely to go up 20-30 percent a year. It’s kind of cannibalizing traditional security companies,” Winegar added. Also, since there are many big companies pushing smart home, we’re going to see a lot of adoption in the next 4-5 years, Winegar predicted. While security systems are the most in-demand solutions, people are interested in doorbell camera, which has been a big success for Vivint, although the company has only started to sell it for the last couple of years, Winegar noted. While outdoor camera is the top seller, door lock, thermostat and indoor camera are also very popular.

Security Stillthe no. 1 FocuS in Smart Building applicationS: SyStem integrator

S

ecurity is currently the most in-demand application in smart buildings, with surveillance, alarm, access control and intercom as the core functionalities, said HomeScenario Inc. Vice President Joel Liu. Founded in 2007, HomeScenario provides smart building solutions and mainly serves the apartment, hotel, school and commercial building markets. To enable security in a building, HomeScenario provides intercom as the user interface. The intercom allows users to see visitors, open door and talk to neighbors or the building management. In addition, the portal allows users to arm or disarm the alarm system, and to monitor live video feeds (from every major camera brands). “Intercom is the portal of smart buildings,” Liu said. The intercom also has the panic button functionality, so in case of an emergency, a push notification can be sent to the smartphones of the closed ones. The intercom is integrated with multiple systems to enable security. When door access is granted via the intercom, for example, an elevator will go to the first floor for the guest, who may only go to the resident’s floor. There is also integration with facial recognition, license plate recognition, garage control, home automation, energy management and public facility booking. In the case of granting access, the intercom is only responsible for door opening, which may be triggered by a smartphone, an access card or facial recognition. The intercom can serve as control hub for lighting, curtains, HVAC and audio/video automation. A setup can be enabled so that lights at home will turn on automatically when the homeowner’s car is detected to be entering the garage. In regards to integration with facility booking, a reservation may be made using a mobile app, which will send a confirmation message to the intercom.

SyStem IntegratorS need to make It FIrSt In Smart Home The team of HomeScenario initially specializes in network applications and waded into the new smart home sector about 10 years ago. The company currently specializes in providing smart community solutions.

“how can you expect average consumers to install smart home products when even professionals can’t do it yet? implementation of smart homes has to start from professional installation.”

Joel Liu, Vice President of HomeScenario Inc.

The company works with building contractors and its product is regarded part of the extra-low voltage (ELV) system in a building. While ELV system makes up just one to two percent in the overall construction costs, it plays a critical role, acting like “the brain and the nervous system” in a building, Liu said. There are mainly three types of players in the smart home industry – consumer product creators, service providers and system integrators. The former two are still experimenting. Consumer products, which are targeted at the whole public, mostly serve entertainment purposes, Liu said. Service providers like cable and telecom companies, one the other hand, can only provide scaleddown smart home solutions. Liu believes system integrators need to make it in the smart home industry before consumer brands and service providers have the chance. “How can you expect average consumers to install it when even professionals can’t? Implementation has to start here.” System integrators like HomeScenario work on projectbased solutions with clearly defined requirement. They offer products that can live with the building and operate for as long as 8-10 years, along with professional maintenance, as opposed to onetime DIY consumer electronics, Liu said. Demand for smart buildings seem to be growing. HomeScenario has found more demand in Southeast Asia, in Indonesia, Cambodia and Vietnam. The company has also branched out in China and in the Middle East, including Turkey and Dubai.

partment buildings demand equipment and facilities that can be used for an extended period of time. Residents may also request more functionalities as time passes. To satisfy this market, AmRoad Technology has made a product line that can be scaled down the road to add functionalities per client demand. AmRoad focuses on making intercoms for multi-dwelling units. The intercoms may have camera monitoring, door access, and facial or license plate recognition capabilities. The company’s door access product initially has just the intercom functionality, but the capability to view surveillance camera footage was later integrated, so that homeowners don’t need a separate device like DVR to view the footage, said James Su, President of AmRoad Technology. “With a robust infrastructure, Amroad’s products can be used for much longer, like 10-20 years. This is very important for apartment applications as replacing home equipment every 1-2 years is unreasonable,” Su added. Amroad has thought everything through, so its product is designed to integrate various functionalities, Su said. “The infrastructure is technically designed in such way to enable

all the functionalities to run on a common platform.” The company has chosen residential communities as its target market. Community security is one of the most sought-after services, and the applications includes door access, home monitoring, home protection and saving lives. The intercom allows residents to call patrol guards, connect to home doorbell remotely, and place SOS calls to their family members. The intercom also has a motion sensor for intrusion detection, as well as smoke detector for fire detection.

Smart Home FunctionS AmRoad’s system infrastructure also has room for home automation enablement. The intercom will collect data and execute commands. It can collect data such as temperature and humidity and send commands to air conditioner upon intelligent computation in the cloud. The intercom has been integrated with Amazon Alexa, is compatible with various protocols, and is able to integrate different hardware and software and execute commands. Data analysis is performed in the backend where decision is made. The decision is then passed to the frontend for execution. Talking about the product’s smart capabilities, Su said the infrastructure was developed with “the future trend” in mind, which is big data and AI. “We already had this idea when the system was first developed more than 10 years ago.” The company’s clients consist mostly of homebuilders, and have made inroads in Indian and Japanese markets besides other Asian countries.

Celebrating 20 years, interseC looks ahead to Further suCCess By Intersec Dubai

AI and robotics take center stage with new technologies changing the security, safety and fire protection landscape.

T

he latest trends in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics in policing societies, along with major projects fueling growth in the Middle East commercial security landscape, were among many talking points, as Intersec concluded its 20th edition in Dubai on January 23. The leading trade fair for security, safety and fire protection featured 1,337 exhibitors from 59 countries, while 29,532 visitors from 129 countries stopped by the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. Sharing center stage were dozens of product launches, while live demonstrations of fire protection equipment and drones used across a wide range of applications kept thousands of buyers and industry professionals entertained and informed. The Dubai Police is one of Intersec’s long-standing government partners, along with the Dubai Civil Defense, Dubai Police Academy, Security Industry Regulatory Agency (SIRA) and for the first time in 2018, the Dubai Municipality. This year from its exhibition stand, the Dubai Police had a strong focus on AI and smarter technologies to keep residents, visitors and communities safe. Among the new features at the fair was an indoor Drone Zone, along with two dedicated conferences on drones and AI. Greg Agvent, Senior Director for CNN Aerial Imaging and Reporting, spoke at the Intersec Drones Conference about the potential uses for drones in information gathering. Agvent said drones can be effective to not only deliver a new perspective of journalism and reporting, but can also be important tools for data capture that can have much wider implications. Agvent also said that Middle East broadcasters wishing to utilize drones need to engage with their respective civil authorities and manufacturers, adding, “That’s what’s so important about events like Intersec. It brings people together, where professionals from a wide range of sectors can gather to understand about the latest

72 mySMAhome.com 2018

technologies, regulations and industry-best practice in an area that is on a high-growth trajectory.” Intersec spans seven show sections of Commercial Security, Fire and Rescue, Safety and Health, Homeland Security and Policing, Information and Cyber Security, Smart Home and Building Automation, and Physical and Perimeter Security. Intersec has proved over the years to be a fruitful business platform for global leaders and industry start-ups alike. Korean company IDIS has exhibited for the past several years and has watched its projects and partnerships in the Middle East expand significantly as a result of contacts established during the show. Meanwhile, Germany’s DoorBird was one of more than 30 companies in Intersec 2018’s fast-developing Smart Home and Building Automation section. Pierre Dinnies, DoorBird’s Key Account Manager, said, “We were very impressed with Intersec last year, and we met a lot of interesting people, so that’s why we decided to participate again in 2018. We need to meet consultants, integrators and installers and that’s who we meet here, from Germany and Vietnam and everywhere in between. It’s been a perfect show again this year.” With 83-percent international exhibitor participation, Intersec’s global footprint was underlined by 15 country pavilions from Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Korea, Pakistan, Singapore, Taiwan, U.K., U.S. and for the first time in 2018, Russia. UAE participation was also high, growing six percent year-on-year, with 223 exhibitors covering 10,500 sqm of exhibition space. Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East, said, “Intersec 2018 has further cemented its position as the world’s premier trade platform of its kind for the security, safety and fire protection industries.” Intersec is held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The 21st edition will take place from January 20 to 22, 2019.
