Connected healthcare solutions and technology in smart home, especially for our senior family members, often remain a doubt. Either because the solutions sometimes go too broad or difficult to understand, or the elders are worried about having after-sales problems that cause great inconvenience. As technology development reduces a lot of efforts taking care of the homes, people now cherish more of the services that really comes helping and supporting the remote home care in smart ways.
T
he following service providers, who were once simply a telco, MSO, security guard, or device repairer, have transformed their focus into smart home. And one more thing in common, they support independent living of the elders with considerate services directly provided by experts.
Kbro and TWM Broadband Puts New Techniques in Old TVs If an app interface is hard to manipulate for your older parents, how about a TV remote control? If a smartphone screen is too small to read any health data, how about a TV screen? Two of the Taiwanese multiplesystem operators (MSOs) have the answer. Kbro Broadband and TWM Broadband are the MSO leaders that provides connected home care services based on their cable TV systems, named simply as “HealthCare”. With the medical collaboration with Taipei Medical University Hospital, and the monthly subscription of end-users, the two service providers are bringing the 12 mySMAhome.com 2018

That is to say, Taipei Medical University Hospital is in charge of all medical health support, whereas Kbro and TWM Broadband provides the connection and platform services. As HealthCare platform has only served its users for several months, the providers are expecting to combine broader inhome services, and more health sensor options in the coming future. The idea is clear that “make people enjoy the service” is the common goal of all service providers. No matter what they originally focused on, they are now part of the smart home industry, upgrading the independent living quality of the elders or supporting their connected home experience with the core support they need. The senior users can especially benefit from the convenience without having to travel to the hospital. In addition, as information collection and online platform going wider, service providers are also targeting AI analysis and big data computing, which will better reflect the value of data, and help care takers to provide on-time service and assistance. While users might still be uncertain about modern technologies, some have already benefit from the inhome service and support. At this transition point of many service providers, stepping into smart home industry, especially taking care of our senior families, turns out to be a great potential that is hard to neglect. However, developing a proper business model that fit their original expertise can be a big topic as well.

Along the trend of aging population throughout the developed countries, people are getting aware of the demand of elderly care with IoT technologies. However, everyone in the family needs home care. The following solutions, from single device to total solution, and from home to care center, have centered the user experience along with care innovations.
Human-centric IoT Healthcare Solutions Ready for Implementations at Smart Homes and Modern Care Centers
Voice-controllable Designs to Bring Better Life Experience with New Concepts As the winner of 2018 SMAhome Top of Excellence Award, Ambi Climate 2nd Edition of Hong Kong-based Ambi Labs is not only targeting elderly users, but all of the end-users in home or small offices that deserve personalized comfort indoors. With built-in artificial intelligence, Ambi Climate 2nd Edition can collect external weather status from the Internet, and sense the indoor time, light intensity, temperature, humidity, and geolocation by itself. All these data is analyzed to automatically adjust air conditioning and ventilation with users’ preference feedback, further offering a better environment for sleeping and other indoor activities. The compatibility of Ambi Climate 2nd Edition with Amazon Alexa ensures an intuitive control with voice commands. “Connecting smart app, the cloud, Ambi Climate, and users’ original air conditioner, we aim to provide the ideal home environment for all our users, whilst keeping energy usage efficient,” 16 mySMAhome.com 2018

said Julian Lee, CEO of Ambi Labs, “We found humidity a critical factor that affects human senses of environment. With the multisensor built in and users’ feedback, Ambi Climate is able to match accurately the indoor air status to the preferences.” Opro9 of CviLux Group is one of the Apple Homekit certified device manufacturer in Taiwan. Simply talk to Siri, home user can remote control the multiple smart devices including air washer and smart fragrance diffuser to take care of their indoor air quality and health. When turning on the smart air washer, it automatically starts detecting the PM2.5 density in the air, and shows the current status of the density level. The bad air quality will trigger the air washing process by absorbing the air from the bottom, washing and filtering with water, and blowing out the clean air for the home. Later, the smart air washer will automatically stops when it senses the improved air quality in real time. Integrated Solutions Connect beyond Home For complete solutions of humancentric healthcare, system developers are determined to deliver a solution that bridge users from home with healthcare center. In this case, convenient home automation is rather a basic idea. What matters most, is the continuous and effective care and connection that match healthcare with living quality. bPoint CARING is an assisted living solution designed for smart home, targeting not just the elders but everyone who wants to keep track of their health without going to a hospital. Beyond
home devices, bPoint CARING also supports remote video calls with doctors or pharmacist, reducing efforts for the elders or patients to travel back and forth. Personal health data, such as blood pressure, heart rate, sleep duration, medication and respiration, are collected by wearables or non-contact sensor bPoint PIN in the bed mattress and saved in the system platform as a reference for health evaluation. When the body measurements turn out to be abnormal, the system can directly send notifications to the care taker. In bPoint CARING, users can also control their customized home scenarios like lighting, shading, bedding, home entertainment, or view device real-time status. TASHI, the expert in building automation and access control, has the bridge solution TeleHealth. With the wearable sensors and physiological measuring devices, users’ personal health data is saved automatically into the information platform, allowing real-time checking from laptop or smartphone. Its support for remote medical consultation brings greater convenience to the entire care scenario. TeleHealth solution can be integrated
with TASHI’s complete smart home system. With the most updated facial recognition technology, family members can soon be able to activate home settings in an easier approach. TASHI and bPoint solutions have the ability to fit in hospitals. However, the two Taiwan-based companies tend to work with private care centers, nursing homes, or smart homes as domestic hospitals remain conservative in IoT healthcare systems with incomplete legislation. “From healthcare to medicare, we are continuously improving bPoint solution while nurturing the professional medical expertise. fit individual demand in healthcare has always been our goal in mind,” shared Jonathan Lin, CEO of bPoint. “Through the cooperative projects with medical universities and property developers in Taiwan, as well as the market experience in Japan, we are next targeting the opportunity in Chinese and Southeast Asian markets.” “Our strategy targets health centers that provide remote care supports for individual users in their smart homes, and the families willing to keep connection with the elders via smart devices, no matter where they are. In the coming future, we will put more AI and biometrics technologies into our smart solutions to bring enhanced home experience,” explained Shelley Wu, Corporate Vice President & TASHI President. “The most considerate home care requires seamless integration of hardware and software systems, including building
a user-friendly environment, such as wheelchair path, or complete public facilities,” Wu added.
Professional Health Trackers and Sensors to Directly Assist Medical Diagnosis Extending the idea from connected home care, indoor movement tracking experts Future-Shape and AnWeife are targeting hospitals or big care centers. Their solution are in close relation to mass data analysis. And the aims, are to provide doctors a clear view of their patients’ whole-day activities. SensFloor is the key technology of Future-Shape. As how it’s called, the sensor is installed beneath the floor, actively and precisely detecting change of capacitance, presence, movement, pressure, and shape from human steps.

The complex sensing result can be analyzed to prevent patients or the elders from falling, getting lost, or serve as tracker to learn from any specific movement pattern of the people. For hospitals or care centers, it’s also a sensor for security control by knowing exact activity, amount of people, and their location. AnWeife, on the other hand, puts indoor trackers on wearables with LoRa or Bluetooth transmission. In the system, data recorded from staffs, doctors, and patients are all separated to keep analytics accurate. When an emergency occurs in one ward, the system can directly find out the nearest care taker to deal with the problem, reducing time of reaction. The indoor mapping and tracking system of AnWeife can further be integrated with smart noncontact bed sensor. With thorough data analysis of health measurement with movement tracking, doctors can have complete evaluation of the patients’ activities, rest, and medication. “With our experience in Central and Western Europe, we found obstacles that many operators are still unsure about their investment into technology. However, the interest and potential installation in care industry is definitely growing fast,” commented Erwin Burth, Chief Marketing Officer of Future-Shape. “Future-Shape will further extend our reach in care industry with AI data analytics as we believe data is the value to bring predictive strategy in the market.” “In Brazil and China, people are adaptive to IoT medical applications, and willing to try advanced technology and services. Our users provide positive feedback on remote consultation and care, as well as the clear health measurements as these feature positively improves the care of their lives,” cited Jack Chen, Managing Director of AnWeife.

Microsoft Cortana
Finds Niche in Smart Applications Microsoft is a big name in the technology industry. With the evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT), the company is riding on the tech wave to launch related services. One of them is virtual assistant Cortana, which competes head-to-head with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant in a smart home environment.

icrosoft is a latecomer in the smart home market. While Amazon and Google have rolled out a series of smart speakers, the Windows creator has but introduced one – Harman Kardon Invoke, six months ago. Amazon Alexa is well ahead in regards to its vast number of skills available to perform various tasks. This does not mean Microsoft has lost the race completely. In fact, Microsoft has some advantages ■ Source: 123rf

that may grant it a comeback in the IoT industry. The company is finding a more open space to deploy its solutions in the office. “This is a newly evolving space, and there is lots of potential for innovation and widespread opportunity for smart speaker manufacturers in both consumer markets, enterprise, and various verticals,”
said Shay Kamin Braun, a product marketing manager of Qualcomm, which recently released the industryfirst smart speaker development platform supporting Microsoft Cortana for manufacturers. While Alexa-compatible devices are becoming common in residential homes, Microsoft’s Windows and Office Suite are already like the standard systems in the business world. If offices are to become smart, Microsoft is likely in the best position to see its realization. There seems to be opportunities in the smart office application. Microsoft is not the only player in the field. Amazon launched Alexa for Business, and Cisco introduced Spark Assistant to facilitate the meeting process. But why not just use solutions from Microsoft, which is already universal in today’s companies? “Compared with Alexa and Google Assistant, Cortana is tailored more for business users. Big companies uses Microsoft’s systems for business applications like human resource management and security control. If they are going to add voice control, it’s probably a Microsoft solution,” said B.K. Liu, product marketing manager of Jazz Hipster Corp., a smart speaker and voice control solution provider based in Taiwan. Elevator with Cortana integration is one example. Otis recently showcased at World Elevator Expo a prototype featuring Cortana. “That demonstration responded to a variety of passenger questions related to using voice to initiate a request to travel to a particular floor, the location of services in the building, weather and music preferences,” said Chris Smith, Otis VP of Service Innovation.
Compatible with Windows and Office Suite The first advantage of Cortana, compared with other assistants, is its close integration with Windows and Office softwares. The voice assistant is pre-installed on computers running on the Windows 10 operation system. It allows users to set reminders, get weather updates, check the traffic, and search information, among other functionalities. The search will be done via Bing, and webpages will pop up with Microsoft Edge. Integration with Office 365 allows Cortana to notify workers of special events, changes in meeting time, and even set timers to remind colleague to attend a meeting. “By integrating with Office 365, Cortana can proactively help you prepare for an upcoming meeting,” Microsoft said in a statement. “Cortana brings you helpful information about the people you’re meeting with, recent documents they’ve worked on, and reminders about when and where you need to be next so you won’t be late.”
Email and Skype Integration The voice assistant also works with email applications to make life easier for office workers. With Cortana, users can check if they have new emails in Outlook with their voice. Cortana will then read you a list of unread messages, including who it is from and the subject. Users may Michael Mauser, even reply to emails with their voice. President of Lifestyle In addition, Gmail may be connected Audio Division at Harman to Cortana, to let it access emails, calendar and contact information in the Google account. Besides Windows 10, users may use Cortana from smart speaker Harman Kardon Invoke to access the emails. Another advantage of Cortana is its integration with Skype, which again, is a common application in the office. With Skype integration, you can make calls to cellphones, landlines and other Skype-enabled devices. This is one of the feature that sets Cortana-powered Kardon Invoke apart from other smart speakers in the market, according to Michael Mauser, President of Lifestyle Audio Division at Harman. While Invoke is the only smart speaker supporting Cortana in the market today, Harman remains optimistic about its potential. “Cortana is used by more than 145 million people across devices and platforms, and voice-Controlled devices are expected to grow to an overall market value exceeding US$7 billion by 2024,” Mauser said. Invoke was launched only in the U.S., and sales have met the target, according to Mauser. “We are working on plans to launch Invoke in markets outside the U.S.” Invoke is also favored by those who are familiar with Microsoft ecosystem and office productivity suite of technologies, Mauser added.
Future Meetings At Microsoft’s Build event held in May, the company demonstrated how the company might facilitate meeting in the future. A cone-shaped device appeared to be both hearing and seeing its surrounding. It identifies people as meeting attendants come into the room. Cortana greets each person by their first name as they walk into the room, and when it sees the leader, it will ask him or her if the meeting should be started. After the meeting is started, Microsoft’s conference solution Surface Hub begins to transcribe the conversation and take notes of key tasks. Real-time translation is also performed for a coworker based in another country.
Ability to Understand Commands In smart home applications, Cortana lets users turn on/off lightings, adjust the thermostat settings and control other devices with their voice. Basically, Cortana perform these home control in ways very similar to Alexa and Google Assistant. “Cortana is very

similar to other voice assistants in terms of user experience,” said Daniel Hall, head of Cloud at LIFX, a smart lighting provider that has supports Cortana, Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant. What is common among all Marc Alexander, Chief Product and Technology the voice assistants is that they Officer at LIFX are constantly being improved to understand human languages better. “When we initially launched with Cortana you had to be exact. ‘Turn off my lounge light" might work, but ‘please set my lounge light off’ would not. I assume this is something all voice assistants are striving to do,” said Marc Alexander, Chief Product and Technology Officer at LIFX. The ability to understand syntax, to comprehend voice commands accurately is very important. It makes it easy for the majority of users who don’t like to repeat commands or be misinterpreted. While Google is considered by many to be the best in language comprehension, the second place may not be so Piotr Orzechowski, CEO of Infermedica certain.

Piotr Orzechowski, CEO of Infermedica, which developed Cortana skill Symptomate, says Cortana is more accurate in identifying phrases compared with Alexa. Symptomate will tell users possible causes for their illness, based on the symptoms users said they have. “When you say, I’m coughing, it will precisely transcribe your voice as ‘coughing,’ not the drink ‘coffee.’ That’s the kind of mistake we are working on with Alexa,” Orzechowski said. Cortana also supports more languages – English, German, Italian, Spanish, French, Simplified Chinese, Portuguese and Japanese. Alexa currently supports English, French, German and Japanese only.
Available across Devices The last and more obvious advantage that Cortana has over other voice assistants is the wide range of devices it can operate on. Besides computer and smart speaker, it runs on Windows Phone, iOS and Android phones as well as Xbox One. Although Cortana is not available on the most number of devices, it is functional on most device types. “Our vision is to put Cortana everywhere you need assistance to get things done… You can expect Cortana to continue to grow across devices and platforms and deliver new skills and capabilities through our third party partners,” Microsoft says.

Buyers at SMAhome Expo 2018
Residential Security Enlarges the Possibilities of Smart Home: By John Liu
S
ecurity devices like cameras and motion sensors have the biggest demand in the smart home market, according to many of the buyers, distributors and visitors who indicated interest in sourcing security related products at SMAhome Expo 2018. Jerzy Zywicki, Director of Digital Home Systems, an Australia-based distributor with 140 smart products in its portfolio, said the local market is growing as fast as 50 percent annually, while smart lighting and security products are the most popular products. Renk Consulting, a Guangzhoubased company that provides services to a German door manufacturer, is looking for ways to make traditional doors smart. “Our client is very interested,” said the company’s Ernst Renk. Renk is looking for sensors and cameras that can be applied to help the elderly or the young, so that they don’t need to open doors on their own. In a scenario where a little girl comes home from school, as she enters the front yard and approaches the door, the motion sensor at the door gets activated and sends a message to the gateway, which turns on the camera and sends video footage to the mother. She then pushes a button to unlock the door. When the girl is inside, the camera in the lobby will take over. When
30 mySMAhome.com 2018
the mother sees that the girl is in the house she can lock the door remotely. The same sequence of commands may apply if an elderly is one of the residents. The convenience is obvious as the elderly tend to have more difficulty in moving around, Renk said. A more advanced camera may even distinguish different faces, and opens the door automatically for a resident whose face it recognizes. When applied at a letterbox, the camera may distinguish mailmen delivering important packages from sales people dropping advertisement. This can save homeowners the trouble of walking a distance to the letterbox to pick up something unimportant. Smart security devices have multiple use cases. They can also count how many people have gone into a room, and how many have left, to make sure no one is left behind.
Monitoring in Stealth
Ernst Renk, Senior Consultant at Renk Consulting
Er Kok Huang, Chief Operating Officer at HSA Technologies
Smart solution provider HSA Technologies that serves the Malaysia market concurred that security application has the biggest potential. “Some people want to monitor their home, their elderly parents, children or pets, when they are away on vacation,” said Er Kok Huang, HSA’s Chief Operating Officer. Cameras may not be the ideal equipment for monitoring. Occupancy sensors, which HSA is looking for, might be the better choice. Elderly people who live alone at home don’t want to be monitored by cameras, so HSA provides motion sensors to detect movement. “If, for example, three to four hours have passed with no movement in the room or common areas, we’ll send notifications to family or friends, and they can call back to check on the elderly,” Huang said. Also, to prevent criminal acts, camera and sensors should be hidden, behind the wall, in the ceiling or under the carpet. The alarm system can be triggered once an unusual event is detected. People should not get the impression that they are being watched, Renk said.
Pakistan to Build Smart City from Scratch Although smart home is not yet considered a mature technology or a booming industry with great demand, some people in the industry believe it has great potential. One of them is Naseer Hashmi, operation manager of Unique Future Digital Systems, a smart home enabler serving the Pakistan and Dubai markets. Hashmi is especially optimistic about Pakistan. There are many projects going on and despite the huge demand, not many smart home companies have established there. Projects are being built for the elite class, the middle class and the lower class. “It is a big country, a big market, and whoever offers smart services are going to get their shares,” Hashmi said. The smart city project is just starting in Pakistan, especially for port city Gwadar, for which the governments of China and Pakistan have teamed up to make it into a smart city. All the new houses and buildings will be smart, per mandate of the two governments, according to Hashmi. “Everything is going to start from scratch.” Unique Future Digital Systems, which considers itself as a smart service pioneer in Pakistan, deals with all kind of extra low voltage and smart services, is looking for partners, big or small, to collaborate with, Hashmi stressed. Motsamai Mofokeng, Director of South Africa-based Emendo Inc., is also optimistic about smart home’s

potential. “I think this application is for the worldwide, to say the least. In South Africa, the government has promoted fiber network to homes, meaning that there is huge opportunity and the demand for this concept.” Automation for lighting, energy conservation and audio control will see the greatest demand. “We do have various types of needs and security demands. Also, South Africans travel a lot,” Mofokeng said. “More often you found out you are not home, and to go home to switch off light and the audio, all those things, it costs quite a lot. With smart concept, you can control from anywhere in the world.”
Simplicity Is Key
Exhibitors explain offerings at the Solution Center of SMAhome Expo 2018.
It appears that one of the challenges to even broader smart home adoption is to make the technology easy to use. While Z-Wave, Zigbee and gateway controller are common terms for people working in the industry, they may sound too technical for average consumers. “Simplicity is still not realized in the smart home market. If you are technical and interested, then it’s solid. But there is not much that is plug and play, and that’s what we are trying to overcome. How we can make it more and more simple,” said Tobias Andersson, product manager of Proove AB, one of the largest smart home solution provider in Sweden. The company is looking for dimmers, energy meters and in-wall modules, in addition to products that can simplify smart device control like push buttons and touch panels. HSA Technologies is also trying to establish itself in the mass market. It has served the high-end home market for the past 3-4 years. The smart home market is growing, and the company is now sourcing products that can be applied in mid- and low-end markets. “We don’t want it to be too complicated. We want it to be simple so that everyone can use it,” Huang said.

Security & Home Automation
Access Control Provides Both By John Liu
H
ome automation is about bringing convenience to end users. And this can begin from the entry point of a home – door lock, which may be connected to devices indoors. In such way, when a person unlocks the door, curtains are drawn automatically, while lights and air conditioning are turned on, and the audio system plays soothing music to welcome homeowners. China-based Locstar Technology makes such smart locks. The company is a member of the Z-Wave Alliance, and its product can be connected with other Z-Wave devices inside the house to enable automation. The most common end-user demand is to switch on or off lights when the door is opened or closed, according to the company’s sales department. Taiwan-based Klacci also makes locks that can be connected to other smart devices. When its lock is not in use, the room will be switched to the “energy conservation mode” under which the lights and air conditioning will be turned off. While Klacci specializes in making smart locks that can be opened via a mobile app, the company is in discussion with clients that are considering the possibility to integrate smart home functionalities. More specifically, to integrate smart home control functions besides door access in one app, said Klacci’s marketing director Michelle Shen, who added that the company will make its API available to its clients. The door lock connection may be applied in the office setting too, according to James Yih, general

manager of automation total solution provider Full Enterprise. When entry of an employee is granted at the door, the light at his or her seat will be turned on automatically. “Also, when the last person to leave the office closes the door, all the lights in the office will be turned off, the power will be cut and the alarm system will be turned on.” Besides the door, garage may be another point of entry. Once access is granted at the gate, the elevator will come down while other devices at home are switched on.
Intercom Enables Home Automation Intercom is another important access control device that can enable home automation. Its basic functions include door opening, intercom conversation, camera image viewing and home appliance control. “Intercom is the dialog interface between users and their homes. It is a natural choice to be integrated with security, door access and monitoring capabilities” said Joel Liu, vice president of HomeScenario, a company that specializes in making intercom systems. The intercom may be connected to the elevator to enable

automation to a degree. Once a homeowner opens the door for a visitor, the visitor can walk to the elevator that will automatically bring the visitor to the homeowner’s floor. The homeowner may even use the surveillance camera in the elevator to check if the visitor has got in. The intercom can also control lighting, air conditioning, curtains and video/audio system. Also, scenes may be set up to turn on or off multiple devices simultaneously. Different scenes may be set up for different areas like living room, kitchen, etc. People usually set up “entry” and “exit” scenes, which automatically turn on and off devices, respectively, when homeowners enter and leave homes, according to HomeScenario’s Liu. Appliances not connected to the Internet may also be controlled from the intercom. Yuan-Hsun Electric offers an intercom system that can control infrared devices. It has a control box that is able to learn infrared signals of various devices. The intercom can then control traditional infrared appliances.
Joel Liu, Vice President of HomeScenario
Connecting to the Management Office Intercom is often connected to the property management office. With Yuan-Hsun’s intercom system, residents can enter numbers from gas meters in a form and send it to the management office. This will facilitate the gas usage recording and utility payment processing, said Lin Guo-Xiang, product engineer at Yuan Hsun. The management office may also provide logistics services with the intercom. Smart lock manufacturer Waferlock offers an intercom system that allows the management office to send text messages to residents if they have delivered packages.
Lin Guo-Xiang, Product Engineer of Yuan-Hsun Electric
Sensors to Detect Environment Changes The intercom may be connected to sensors to monitor the indoor environment, to detect the level of PM 2.5, formaldehyde or poisonous gas. Air conditioning may be turned on automatically based on the numbers, said Lin FangZhi, sales manager at Ghouse, which helps to market ALCATEL SIP video intercom solution in Taiwan. Motion sensors may be installed to detect intrusion. And homeowners can set it up in such a way that lights will be turned on when door/window sensor detects motion. “Customers will first seek the basic
intercom function and clear image because you use it every day, followed by convenient capabilities like light control, and then light or air conditioning control based on sensor detection. It’s like a gradual step-by-step process,” Lin said. Intercom may also come with SOS button, and if there are any unusual events happening at home, push notifications may be sent to users’ smartphone immediately. When there is a security breach, alerts will be sent to the smartphone as well.
Klacci’s smart locks are presented at SMAhome Expo
Control Everything from Smartphone It is worth noting that many of the intercom functions can be accessed from the smartphone. It means that users can open the door, control home appliances, or arm the security system from their smartphone. The ALCATEL SIP video intercom solution does just that. “Because smartphone is now part of people’s everyday life, and they want to have all these control capabilities on their phone, so the company tries to integrate most of the smart home functionalities on the phone,” Lin said. Brinno offers a peephole camera that can alert homeowners via smartphone notifications if there are movements at the door. The camera is mounted on the door, and a screen on the inside of the door lets people see who is knocking and take a snapshot with the press of a button. “This device is suitable for children or the elderly, the latter may not see clearly from the door’s peephole,” said Benson Liu, Director of Sales in Asia. The most advanced Brinno model also has a PIR sensor, so when motion is detected, pictures will be taken automatically. Users who are not home will be notified if there are pictures taken. Brinno’s companion app also allows homeowners to view real-time image at the door. Usually thieves or buglers will knock on the door, to check if anyone is home. Brinno’s product provides “the first line of defense,” Liu said.

Security Sensing By Samantha Shen
Security is still often the top demand while mentioning smart applications nowadays. For consumers and system integrators of building or community projects, entire solution that takes care of more than one device, more than a single possible scenario is a better choice than mixing single products from everywhere.
Around the Home in Exchange for Peace of Mind
The First Defense Stands Outdoors
iHorn Multi-beam Window/Door Barrier LHP-6Z
34 mySMAhome.com 2018
As the first protection of homes, outdoor areas like the fences of home, garden gates of a community, or bedroom balcony can prevent intruders by active movement scanning. Consisting of active infrared transmitter and receiver, iHorn Multi-beam Window/Door Barrier LHP-6Z uses multiple IR beam and dual beam identification method to tell intrusion, and notify homeowner or community guard instantly. iHorn Multi-beam Window/Door Barrier LHP-6Z is thin enough to fit almost anywhere. With adjustable sensitivity of movement, environment change, light intensity, and time schedules, users can easily customize alarms for home and communities based on their personal demand. Activation for outdoor camera or alarms to regional emergency center is also available for such prevention. The sensing distance is optional from 5 to 60 meters, available for both larger holiday houses and residential communities. On the other side of the backyard or garage entrance, the ACI Smart Surveillance system is not only working for access control, but the security sensing and recognition of movement, faces, license plate of vehicles, as well as fire. Supported by robust cloud-based data center, ACI Smart Surveillance solution integrates 3Drens, Network Optix, and Vision Labs recognition algorithms, as well as the emergency contact to users’ call center or police station/fire safety
department. Accident or sudden event can directly trigger alerts. In case of unusual movement or car accidents around the house, homeowners will be able to get rapid assistance from all authority concerned.
Indestructible Sensor Web in Home to Protect What You Treasure Most Walking into the front door, the smart security sensors are ready deployed in every corner to protect the smart home. Surrounded by HS1 series of sensors around the house, the Heiman HS1 GW Gateway, selectable to use Z-Wave or Zigbee protocol, communicates and helps homeowners to get a full control of movement, door status, temperature, smoke, and gas or water leakage. More than a hundred devices can be connected to the same gateway simultaneously. With preset schedules, HS1 series of sensors is armed with high attention. In case of intruders, the door sensor reports first of the unusual change of door opening, and the motion sensor will follow up the movement detection with instant alerts to the homeowners. As for sudden fire accident in the kitchen, smoke and carbon monoxide sensor will tell the wrong situation within the air, and the temperature sensor will report the overheating indoors. To minimize the damage from fire and enhance fire prevention, AnWeife has the solution to eliminate smoke indoors. Connecting up to 30 wireless smoke sensors and automatic window opener, the AnWeife security system can automate window to open based on the detection of smoke, reducing intensity of smoke and harmful gas.
Heiman HS1 series sensor
Not only for homes, the AnWeife security system aslo works well in shopping malls, factories, as well as nursing homes. The sensor installed in different rooms or different layers of building can send off alarms at the same time with each wireless direct transmission ranging to 30 meters far. With daily schedules, connected window opener can also enhance indoor ventilation. On the other hand, Kneron NPU, a neural network processor that provides high computing performance with low power consumption, supports Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) technology for the applications of visual recognition and deep learning. Kneron’s visual recognition solutions can recognize human faces, bodies, gesture, objects, and scenes. Applying into home surveillance and security sensing, Kneron’s edge AI recognition solution can instantly detect faces, verify identities, and recognize dangerous objects such as knives. When a thief sneaks in, the camera with Kneron solution can instantly detect the stranger, the unusual gesture or walking pattern in the house, and the dangerous tools used to break in. Further, the recognition can be programmed to connect other home security devices to arm an emergency scenario, and send alerts to the police station. With the AI deep learning and scene recognition capability, users can also interpret an image of dangerous accident and write a sentence to describe the scene, enhancing Kneron’s recognition of danger.
Invisible Threats Deserves Awareness
Turris Omnia
After having the physical security control settled, those invisible attackers in the home wireless network are also a not-to-miss weak point. Czech-based Turris has always put network security as their priority. The black Turris Omnia is a box that combines home network router, home automation gateway, and the cybersecurity protector. The unique security feature is called Honeypots. In pools of fake accounts and Internet attackers, Turris Omnia runs a farm of so called Honeypots, which simulates a running system and simultaneously observe potential attackers in the network. Users are allowed to configure Turris Omnia to redirect suspicious traffic to the Honeypot and get records of caught attackers and their actions. The whole action process is completed on Turris’ server to protect privacy of end devices, and the collected data will be shared to other Turris routers for future-proof prevention. Protecting home with various solutions, all the applications actually share a common goal: enable people to focus on what really matters. And for the rest of the concern, people can rely on advanced technology. Some also target the future trend of reducing cost of security guard, meaning a further change of current security concept and the blend of technologies with our smart living.

In addition, larger patient base and increasing life expectancy will drive IT investment in the healthcare industry in the region. Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and India are all changing their healthcare policies and encouraging startups to develop disruptive technologies to tackle key medical challenges, says the report.
Smart Speaker Market to Worth over US$13 Billion by 2024
S
mart speaker market size is estimated to exceed US$13 billion, with shipments of over 100 million units by 2024, according to a new research report conducted by Global Market Insights. The smart speaker market is expected to grow at a significant pace over the forecast timeframe owing to the growing proliferation of smart homes across the globe. Factors such as high network connectivity and growing demand to increase consumer convenience are anticipated to drive the market.
42 mySMAhome.com 2018
Several device manufacturers are investing in improving the functionality of legacy systems beyond playing music. This, coupled with increasing demand for wireless devices will escalate the industry size. Rise in demand for IoT is expected to fuel the smart speaker market growth. Manufacturers are increasingly investing to develop devices that work with devices such as Wink Hub, Logitech Harmony Elite and Philips Hue Bulbs. For instance, Amazon Alexa works directly with several smart home devices using IFTTT.
75% of Home Security Installations Include Smart Control Features
U
p to 75 percent of home security installations in 2017 included smart control features, according to a Parks Associates report. Up to 90 percent of U.S. security dealers now offer at least basic interactive services with their offerings, and 36 percent report security systems sales with a networked camera, and 16 percent report sales with a smart thermostat. “Security dealers continue to explore innovations to increase the consumer adoption of their offerings,” said Dina Abdelrazik, a research
analyst at Parks Associates. Smart speaker installation is also on the rise. “Currently only five percent of dealers report including smart speakers with their security system sales, but the popularity of these devices means we will start to see more voice control options in security installations,” Abdelrazik said. Large security providers such as ADT and MONI/ Brinks have enabled Alexa skills and certain security functionalities to be accessible via voice commands through popular voice assistants.
Purchase Intentions for Smart Home Devices Grow 66% in One Year
P
urchase intention of smart home devices among the U.S. population jumped 66 percent year-onyear, which will result in an increase in consumer expectations “for premium and personalized technology experiences in all aspects of their digital lives,” said Parks Associates. “Connected devices have changed consumer expectations for how digital technology is experienced in every sphere of their lives, from home to work and in public venues, hotels and entertainment events,” said Brad
Russell, Director of Connected Home Research at Parks Associates. While smart speaker is one of the most commonly seen smart devices at home today, other categories are also trending upward. One of them is smart thermostat, the number of which has more than doubled in recent years, says Parks Associates. Smart thermostat ownership increased from five percent in 2014 to 13 percent in 2017 among U.S. broadband households. Up to 60 percent of smart thermostats are self-installed.
Google Home Sales Surpassed Amazon Echo’s in Q1 2018
I
n the first quarter of 2018, Google’s smart speaker outsold Amazon’s for the first time, according to a report by Canalys. Between January and March, Google shipped 3.2 million Google Home devices while Amazon shipped 2.5 million Echo units. Google Home sold in the first quarter 2018 accounted for 36.2 percent of the global smart speaker shipment, while Amazon Echo made up 27.7 percent, Alibaba 11.8 percent and Xiaomi seven percent. Nine million units of smart speakers were
shipped worldwide in the first quarter. Amazon’s market share the shipment fell drastically from 79.6 percent in the first quarter of 2017 to 27.7 percent one year later. Canalys attributed Google’s positive performance in sales to its distribution strategy. “Amazon is fighting back hard, and the sheer quantity of Alexa Skills and smart home integrations will be tough for any competitor to match,” said Ben Stanton, an analyst at Canalys.

Scalable SiMPNiC Ecosystem to Genuinely Fulfill Smart Home Demand and Integration
T
he brand SiMPNiC is originated from a combination of “simple” and “technology”, aiming to simplify the complexities in IoT smart living. The name also sounds like the homonym of “symphony”, bringing the image of a seamless home environment, where home user is the conductor of the elegant symphony, gracefully controlling all types of connected devices with smart solution. As a unique brand of communication expert CTS, SiMPNiC is considered having complementary effect for its parent company. “Just like iMacs and iPhones of Apple, they are the flagship products of two different decades, but their concept and functionalities can support each other, consolidating an irreplaceable ecosystem in Apple users’ life. Now, CTS and SiMPNiC are sharing the same idea,” explained Antony Chen, President of CTS. “Based on home communication, SiMPNiC is constantly identifying the void of so called ‘smart home’ from the point of home application. We would like to fulfill what is missing in the smart home scenarios,” Chen added. From his view, the ideal smart home solution is not just making technical progress, but continuously rethinking if the application can genuinely solve problems of the smart home users. Though the applications can vary greatly from home security to comfort control, all of the scenarios are

aiming the same target -- a better home experience with secured technology. With high scalability, the SiMPNiC S1 Gateway is designed to prioritize proofed edge-security and flexible open platform. Home ecosystems can therefore be expanded and customized based on individual home conditions and demand. “SiMPNiC is not simply selling the products, but the integrated solutions to solve inconveniences that users face at their living spaces. We are turning ourselves into an IoT platform (SOP, SiMPNiC Open Platform), where our partners can easily plan and implement their IoT business, and enhance the convenience of integrating the best home that end-users prefer,” commented Chen gladly. One concept behind this step forward is separating the smart device users and the adopters. SiMPNiC has transformed their business model from working individually to cooperating with other partners from various industries as an IoT ecosystem. While users need more time to get used to smart connected devices, SiMPNiC will gradually integrate the solution into homes, becoming an inevitable part of users’ daily lives. Unlike many companies target the buyers of products, SiMPNiC wants to satisfy users. "Ultimately we want end-users to 'feel' the benefit of smart home. To realize the goal, SiMPNiC team has to 'sense' the life and consumer demand first," concluded Chen. "We believe the continuous observation of life can effectively optimize SiMPNiC smart solutions."

Australia Smart Home Market Continues to Boom: Distributor
A
ustralia is a growing market and even people renting apartments are buying a lot of smart home products, because they are now more affordable, according to Jerzy Zywicki, Director of Digital Home Systems, a Melbournebased distributor of smart home products and systems. People want to be able to check if their garage door is open or not, and close it remotely when necessary. Many people also want to be able to control home temperature before they arrive home, so there may be some kind of geofencing connected to the thermostat at home to change the temperature automatically. Furthermore, people want to be able to unlock the door remotely for a guest, or to provide a PIN code to let the guest open the door on their own. These technologies are now more affordable and available for the mass market. It has become “mainstream,” and the market is growing at least 50 percent a year, Zywicki said. Commenting on the smart home market, Zywicki said, “Last year we saw a number of voice-control systems like Google Home, so the big companies started to promote new ways of controlling house. That is the enabler to actually create an enormous interest in the market last year.” “We spoke with Taiwanese suppliers. They said smart home installation and interest were pretty much doubling last year,” Zywicki continued. “We actually reach this phase of development where the market is growing on its own. There is enough installation in the market already for homeowners to share experience and boost the demand even further.” Smart security systems and whole home automation, based on Vera or Fibaro controller, are currently the most in-demand products in the market, according to Zywicki. Many smart products are wireless, and people don’t have to call installers if they want to set up very simple installations, Zywicki said. If you want whole-home automation, with video and audio, heating and cooling integration, it requires a little experience and good judgment of what products would fit the best. As such, professional installation is recommended.
zConnect Looks for Partners Established a decade ago, Digital Home Systems has been working with the Z-Wave Alliance and Z-Wave manufacturers. The company works with both online and physical retailers that sell directly to the public, as well as more than 400 professional installers in Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific regions. Digital Home Systems provides trainings and support to its partners when needed.

"10 years ago smart home products were too complicated and too expensive, and thanks to the Z-Wave technology, smart products gradually became simpler in design and easier to integrate."
Jerzy Zywicki, Director of Digital Home Systems
The company is sourcing pretty much everything in the smart home system, including smart dimmers, switches, thermostats, sensors and a variety of actuators. Digital Home Systems currently has some 140 products in its portfolio that are sold all over the world. It is also an original design manufacturer that contracts production in various parts of the world. In 2015 Digital Home Systems launched a new Australian brand called zConnect. It is looking for partners to mass-produce Z-Wave products, like water valves, universal sensors, garage door openers, just to name a few. Digital Home Systems is looking for suppliers that have enough experience in R&D in Z-Wave to have all those products certified by the Z-Wave Alliance, while meeting Australian regulations. Suppliers should also provide good support. We don’t want to be left on our own after buying a product. Suppliers should provide product updates, warranty and fixes. “We are looking for partners that plan to stay in the industry for the long run,” he stressed.
Z-Wave Simplifies Smart Home Products Z-Wave is like the de facto wireless standard right now in the smart home industry. Nine out of 10 security companies in the U.S. are using the Z-Wave interface for home control. “The Z-Wave seminars held at the SMAhome Expo 2018 are pretty much full, as Z-Wave is becoming more and more popular. There is definite demand and interest in Z-Wave in Asia” Manufacturers adopting the Z-Wave protocol have made quality products, Zywicki added.

ollowing the upcoming Z-Wave announcement this summer, Silicon Labs is expecting further and comprehensive integration of the Z-wave compatibility into its original components and solutions, providing global clients more options in powerful wireless connectivity and simultaneously generating more partnerships in wireless industry. With the well-developed Zigbee mesh, Bluetooth mesh, the new low-power Wi-Fi transceiver and module, as well as the new Z-Wave product line, Silicon Labs believes that the comprehensive developer support and broad choice of protocols is the great advantage behind their various solutions. “Silicon Labs provides stable protocol stacks, easy-to-use developer tools and debugging ability to all our solutions. The high compatibility for integration while consuming low power is greatly strengthening the system costs for IoT device manufacturers, reducing new products’ time-tomarket,” explained Luke Pao, Country Manager of Silicon Labs Taiwan. As global IoT and smart home market growing constantly, Pao is expecting the fastest growth and device

implementation in the next five to ten years. He considers service and system providers the critical roles in the smart home market in Asia, where smart home adaption rate is still relatively lower. According to Pao’s idea, the first step to expand Asian smart home deployment is the establishment of complete smart home ecosystems, which covers interoperability, cloud platform building, customized systems, and control interface, offering better user experience with the new technology. “Pioneers in US market like Comcast and Amazon also led leading implementation by building up thorough ecosystems. Asian service providers such as Chunghua Telecom, Taiwan SECOM, or China Mobile can be the key role in this potential market,” commented Pao. The next step of Silicon Labs will hold the major focus on wireless solutions, further widening IoT solutions into more industries like smart security, connected healthcare, IoT automotive and more unlimited occasions.

Facebook Designs AI-enabled Chips to Analyze and Filter Video Content
F
acebook has put its hands on designing in-house chips that can analyze and filter video content, according to Yann LeCun, the company’s chief AI scientist. Although video posted on Facebook may require little filtering or analysis, Facebook sees it in a different way. “Let’s imagine someone uses Facebook Live to film their own suicide or murder, you’d like to be able to take down that kind of content as it happens,” LeCun said. AI-enabled chips are much more energyefficient, compared with using conventional computers to monitor videos.
New Wi-Fi Standard to Make Mesh Routers Work Together
Siemens Building Technologies and Nordic Semiconductors Join Thread Group
S
iemens Building Technologies and Nordic Semiconductors have both increased their commitment in the Thread Group, and joined its board of directors, further expanding the alliance’s presence in the global commercial and smart home marketplace. “We chose to increase our commitment to Thread because it solves commercial building spaces’ biggest challenge: technology silos plagued with minimal interoperability,” noted Klaus Waechter, Standardization Manager at Siemens Building Technologies.
T
he Wi-Fi Alliance has introduced a new standard called EasyMesh. It allows mesh routers made by one manufacturer to work with models made by other companies, as long as they support EasyMesh. The new standard is likely to simplify things. If Linksys and Netgear, for example, both make their products EasyMeshcompatible, consumers will be able to use Netgear’s Orbi Outdoor access point with a Linksys Velop router.
