However, all this has changed since Narendra Modi was elected as the new prime minister last year. Since Modi came to power, foreign and local investments have been positive, with expectations for further economic growth in the next two years, and opportunities for the security industry on growing project demands. Security for Self-Boarding Lanes in China
R
oyal Boon Edam has announced that they have won the order for the installation of their Airport Swinglane self-boarding security lane at Xiamen International Airport in China. This project will be the first self-boarding project in China which is not installed as part of a pilot program. Xiamen Airport is one of the busiest airports in China with nearly 20 million passengers in 2013. As an important provincial and regional air hub, the airport is serving the coastal city of Xiamen and surrounding cities of the Fujian Province and also has direct routes to many other countries in Asia. Additionally there is one route to Amsterdam. Like many airports in China, Xiamen is one of the frontrunners in the implementation of self-service in the airport terminal. The link with Amsterdam proved advantageous to Boon Edam. The company is headquartered in the Netherlands. Boon Edam and representatives of Xiamen Airport first met during the China Airport Check-in Summit in Shanghai. After close consideration of all competitors, the airport ultimately decided to award the order to Boon Edam. Their design of the Airport Swinglane self-service boarding gate with an efficient add-on is more suitable for the Chinese market.

G Neovo has played a crucial role in allowing many public transport systems around the globe to run smoothly and safely. The latest addition to its clientele in this sector is Kaohsiung International Airport, the second-largest international airport in Taiwan. As Taiwan’s national gateway in the southern part of the country, Kaohsiung International Airport knows it must keep up an equally deserving image. To this end, it has ushered in premium LCD displays from AG Neovo to construct video walls for flight information, doing away with increasingly outdated rear projection displays. A total of 42 units of AG Neovo’s displays are installed to form four video walls at the airport. Intended to display arrival and departure schedules and other flight information, two four-by-three video walls are placed at the information desks of two leading airlines; two of a three-by-three configuration are placed at the departure hall.

Data Recovery Service in Taiwan
S
eagate Technology, a world suplier in storage solutions, announced it has launched its data recovery services in Taiwan for the Seagate surveillance family of drives. The recovery services will be delivered in partnership with ShinSoft, Everfocus, NUUO, and key surveillance solutions providers in Taiwan. Seagate is a storage solutions provider to offer a complete protection plan that covers drive replacement and data recovery services. This protection plan covers data recovery services at a fraction of the cost of data recovery services purchased after the event, and keeps systems in the field longer and reduces post-deployment expenses. Activated at time of purchase, the services provide three years of data recovery for data that may be lost due to physical damage, corruption, or accidental deletion. A fast and easy recovery process, it can typically restore data within two weeks depending on the type of recovery — with up to a greater than 90 percent success rate in data recovery. Engineered specifically for surveillance and video analytics applications, Seagate’s surveillance drives are available in capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB, with 5TB and 6TB configurations soon to be released in Taiwan.
India Video Surveillance Market Growth
T
he Indian market for video surveillance equipment exceeded US$300 million for the first time in 2013 and is forecast to grow at an increasing rate over the next five years. This is according to a recently published report by
IHS. Much of the market growth is forecast to come from increased government spending. In June 2014, a new government was elected in India. It won enough seats to govern without the support of other parties. Such independence is expected to help the new government push through the difficult economic reforms that are necessary for India to return to higher rates of GDP growth. It is also expected to help push through spending on public projects which have previously struggled to gain final approval. Demand for video surveillance equipment is therefore forecast to grow quickly in such end-user sectors as city surveillance, traffic monitoring, railways, and education. The market is forecast to almost double in size between 2013 and 2018. Furthermore, it is more open to foreign vendors than some other regional markets. Many of the big international brands already have a local presence in India, but they are likely to expand and be joined by other international brands as the market continues to grow.

Indonesian Health Products Plant Safeguarded by VIVOTEK cameras
S
ido Muncul is one of Indonesia’s producers of Jamu (an herbal health drink) as well as a wide range of other health products. From the beginning of a small household business in 1940, Sido Muncul has grown steadily to become a key provider of herbal health products. This is no simple task as Sido Muncul’s factory occupies a huge 34-hectare plot of land in Klepu, Semarang, in Central Java, and includes seven separate laboratories. These laboratories are all equipped with the latest tools and devices and operate to the highest standards. Within this context of extremely high demands on the safety and security of the production process, Sido Muncul decided that its high-tech operation had outgrown its previous surveillance system and required a high-tech security system to match its exacting standards. A total of 200 VIVOTEK cameras were installed across Sido Muncul’s largest plant. The high-quality coverage, IR capability, and smooth operation of VIVOTEK cameras in all conditions ensured that the production process could be monitored, losses prevented, and human resources managed effectively. Further, some cameras were used to monitor any waste from the production process. VIVOTEK also supplied a brand new video management system, bringing Sido Muncul’s total surveillance system into a new era of functionality and stability.

Australia Police Invest in Facial Recognition
T
he South Australia police department will spend US$1.3 million on a facial recognition system that will scan images of suspected offenders against their existing databases. Revealed in tender documents from the department’s 2014 state budget, the system will be designed to be accessed from in the field as well as from office desks. The department seeks the “provision of a secure mobile device application that is compatible with Microsoft Windows 8.x and Samsung Android 4.4.x that enables an officer to select, capture, and submit images to the facial recognition technology for matching purposes and returns the results to the requesting mobile device via the 3G/4G network,” according to the tender documents. The term of the agreement reached with a vendor will be for three years with SAPOL having the option to extend for a further two-year term. In October, 2014, Australian state and federal justice ministers agreed to form a strategy that involves facial recognition technology being implemented across all federal, state, and territory jurisdictions.
More Acquisitions for Avigilon
A
vigilon, a leading global provider of end-to-end security solutions, announced that it has completed the acquisition of 96 US and international patents and 25 US and international patent applications (the “Patents”) from four unrelated vendors for aggregate cash consideration of US$13.4 million. Avigilon acquired the patents in separate transactions with each of the following entities: Behavioral Recognition Systems, FaceDouble, ITS7, and VideoMining. The Patents relate to various video analytics capabilities, including emotional and attentional response measurement, in-store object tracking and behavioural analysis, object tracking and anomaly detection, video segmentation and metadata generation, user interfaces, and image classification and retrieval over wireless networks. Other notable fields covered by the Patents include network camera systemon-a-chip and remote security camera programming. With the acquisition of the Patents, and following Avigilon’s recent acquisition of ObjectVideo’s entire patent portfolio and patent licensing program, Avigilon holds 213 US and international patents and 215 US and international patent applications.
High Growth Reported Even as Everyone Struggles
S
ince the financial crisis of 2008, the market has been faced with an oversupply and price competition waged by mainland Chinese manufacturers. Security players were all subject to low revenue growth and earnings declines.
Over the past one to two years, I’ve heard a lot about companies seeing a growth in sales volume yet a disproportionately smaller growth, or even a decline, in revenue. Those that can maintain a strong business are very few. It was against this background that I learned, with much amazement, about the 60 percent sales growth at Hikvision, which just released its 2014 financial results. The company already made US$1 billion in sales in 2013, and further growth last year indicates just how solid and strong its competitive edge was. It looks like growth at Hikvision will all but continue in the medium term. This means the company will over the next one to two years confront even more manufacturers, channel players, or channel players with their own brands. Hikvision doesn’t rely much on distributors, as its own branches and offices cover nearly all major markets in China, dealing directly with SIs and important clients without having to go through channel players.
FEB 2015 ● www.asmag.com
There is another interesting phenomenon. Many distributors have sided with Hikvision due to its strength and competitiveness. Yet ironically, Hikvision’s monumental growth has threatened their own survival. During Intersec, I had a chat with a former Hikvision distributor, who told me they had switched to another Chinese vendor. The reason was that Hikvision’s presence was everywhere, causing a disruption to market order. Distributors who can’t make any money just went somewhere else.
Meanwhile, Hikvision has expanded overseas and set up branches and offices to deal with important SIs and users, even doing business with private labels that are smaller in scale. For companies with an unclear market position or core value, they must be careful and brace for the storm that is coming up. On a final note: according to the latest news, Canon will spend US$2.8 billion to acquire Axis, the leader in network surveillance cameras. Although this is big news, it’s hardly surprising. With intense competition in the IP cameras market, Axis must have found it difficult to maintain its former high growth selling network cameras alone. For shareholders, now is probably a good time to sell. It looks like the consolidation trend in the industry will become more noticeable this year.

There has been a lot of speculation, differing opinions, and misunderstandings regarding the fate of Samsung Techwin after its stock ownership sale to Hanwha Group in late 2014. Rumors that the Samsung Techwin brand would go away after the sale, or that the sale was due to any kind of weakness of the brand were rampant. In the following, the company assures the industry not only are they not going anywhere, they are more motivated than ever to succeed.
Samsung Techwin Brand and Sales Remain Intact After Sale BY Samsung Techwin
S
ince the announcement that the Samsung Group would sell off its stock ownership of Samsung Techwin in November 2014, the industry has been interested in the following two questions: Will Samsung Techwin products retain the Samsung Brand name, and if so, for how long? How much would the news impact the company’s sales?
To set the record straight, the company’s sales in December 2014 remained steady despite the previous expectations that sales would be hit the hardest during the period. In addition, Samsung Techwin will maintain the Samsung brand name. Unsurprisingly, December 2014 was a busy month for the company, handling a flood of inquires from all of its partners — some partners even visited the headquarters. There were also an abundance of rumors and misguided media reports. However, Samsung Techwin calmly contacted its business accounts, partners, contractors, etc. Sales personnel have met with their assigned accounts one by one to make sure they understand that Samsung Techwin will not only continue to keep its core technologies and R&D personnel, but will also make little changes to the product roadmap. The 2015 lineup is being operated as planned, with the manufacturing line and product supply up and running without any major interruption after the sell-off announcement. In a nutshell, everything is business as usual at Samsung Techwin. As a result, December sales were barely influenced by the news and sales even increased in some regions (e.g., China, the U.S., India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Vietnam, etc.). David Kim, Director of Sales and Marketing for APAC at Samsung Techwin, said, “The news of sellout served as an opportunity to motivate our employees in a positive way. Through one-on-one dialog with our partners, we reaffirmed their trust in us and deepened our relations even further. We could listen to different views of the partners highly loyal to our company and reflect such opinions to the 2015 lineup and product R&D. The sell-off decision served as a momentum for the company and our partners to launch sales and marketing activities in a more aggressive manner.” Samsung Techwin believes that now is the time for the real game to begin. It pledges to take this opportunity as a pivotal point to expand customer-oriented product lineup and services and accelerate devising medium to long-term plans. It is expected to make an official announcement regarding medium to long-term plans once the due diligence is completed.

Boosts Up Hikvision its Competency in
H
Solutions
aving accumulated years of experience in solution design in its domestic market, now, the company would like to leverage their experience and apply it to more overseas markets. The APAC region, particularly, remains quite crucial for Hikvision as a place to develop its solutions overseas. Cynthia He, VP at Hikvision Digital Technology said, “In China, Hikvision has achieved great accomplishment in permeation to multiple verticals. We are capable to offer tailored solutions close to the market and fulfill the particular requirement from each vertical and project.”
Targets Seven Verticals
FEB 2015 ● www.asmag.com
Hikvision has selected seven verticals — police, transportation, banking, buildings, justice, education, and energy — to develop relevant solutions for its domestic market. Under each vertical market, the company has also established a designated division to fully develop its R&D, marketing, technical supports, and customer service teams. With all these efforts, Hikvision’s penetration in each vertical is strengthened. “Our experience in China clearly demonstrates Hikvision’s efforts and qualification for solution design and implementation,” said He. He, in the following, shared some
24
highlights of Hikvision’s solutions in some key verticals and recent cases:
Public Safety — City surveillance In light of fast urbanization and increasing crime rates, city surveillance has been the focus for many governments around the world. Nowadays, many local governments start to rely on security technologies to achieve anti-terrorism, combat crime, and enhance operational efficiency. Hikvision offers unique video surveillance technologies, which are able to unify a series of information, generated during information collection, transmission, storage, and adjustment, together into one platform. China has around 12 provincial networking platforms; Hikvision did seven of them.
Secures the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) The Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2014 was held in April in Boao, a coastal town in China’s southernmost island province of Hainan. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and the country representatives coming from other 25 countries, including Russia and Australia, all attended this forum. To secure the forum and also the attendees, the Hainan Provincial Public Security Bureau installed IP video surveillance platforms in two of their command centers. The platform connected around 1,800 video surveillance cameras, from Qionghai, Boao, and Haikou areas, and highways around the island, with another 200 surveillance cameras in hotels. Relying on this video surveillance platform, the police were able to carry out their multiple public safety tasks without road closures or disturbing the local residents. The platform collected visual and audio information from the travel routes of those government representatives, in order to timely detect any emergencies and address potential risks. This platform has helped the local law enforcement agencies perfectly complete their tasks in public safety.
Transportation Hikvision provided an IP video surveillance platform to connect around 2,000 cameras, to protect the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference in 2014, in Boao, Hainan Province in China.
In 2014, Hikvision Digital Technology made an incredible growth rate at 60 percent with total sales revenue of US$2.8 billion. The stupendous achievement has been attributed to the company’s successful vertical deployment in its domestic market, as well as the localization strategy, coupled with its global penetration. Seeing the increasing demand for integrated systems and solutions, the company has well prepared for the migration, from being product centric to solution oriented. In 2015, Hikvision aims to strengthen its capability to develop solutions for verticals. BY the a&s Editorial Team
Transportation is another key vertical for Hikvision. The company especially incorporates many of its upgraded technologies, such as facial recognition and license plate recognition (LPR), into new hardware devices as a solution to fulfill customers' needs in the transportation sector.
Smart Traffic Monitoring in Transportation Hubs of Shanghai Hongqiao Hikvision installed special license plate recognition systems in main transportation hubs, intersections, and overpasses in Shanghai Hongqiao. The company implemented 20 vehicle identification systems to capture the images of license plates and vehicles, recognize license plates, test traffic parameters, and record and upload data, toward 68 car lanes. In addition, Hikvision also designed a series of solutions for seaports, highways, railway, and traffic law enforcement.
Hikvision launched an intelligent video management system, which is built-in with multiple modules for different verticals. Cynthia He, VP, Hikvision Digital Technology

Smart Retail: Gucci in China
All the Gucci shops in China have installed Hikvision's intelligent video surveillance systems, featuring customer flow analysis.
For example, the company has successful projects in the Beijing Subway, Shanghai-HangzhouNingbo Expressway surveillance project, and the Tianjin Seaport.
In a retail shop, using the traditional technologies of infrared and gravity sensing can only provide the information of the total number of customers. They neither provide any further information, such as customer flow nor fulfill any of the end-customer requirements toward internal management. The Gucci China Headquarters replaced their legacy system with Hikvision’s video surveillance system, featuring customer flow analysis. The video surveillance system can automatically collect a variety of data in customer flow accurately and generate reports for the end customers to better do business planning. Currently Hikvision’s video surveillance system has been installed in all the Gucci stores nationwide in China. The statistics generated from the system can achieve accuracy at 90 percent and accurately display the customer flow in all the branch stores, which effectively improves service standards in each store and each branch store’s sales revenue is also increased by nearly 10 percent.
Banking For the financial sector, Hikvision proposes a visualized security business management solution, which is able to protect bank staff, customers, and assets, and further enhance its internal supervision and management. Overall, the solution greatly improves the service quality for each bank.
Retail In the retail sector, with video analytics, the company is able to provide more valuable information, such as face recognition, people counting, heat maps, etc, and generate many graphic reports regarding customer flow, their preferences as well as employee performance at the cashier. Meanwhile, to reduce the difficulty in maintenance, Hikvision is moving video analytics to the front end of the camera system. Since this will simplify the total cost of the IT infrastructure, the solution is very suitable for the SMB retail sector.
FEB 2015 ● www.asmag.com 26
Face Identification in Guangdong Development Bank, Nanjing Branch The banking sector now requires a system which can provide immediate event prevention, detection, and management. Hikvision’s banking solution uses face identification in the entrances of the bank. It can detect suspicious loitering around entrances of the banks in the past few days and automatically upload the suspects' headshots, time, and location to the central management platform. All the information is well recorded in the back-end system, which provides multiple functions, such as data retrieval and inquiry, and generates a blacklist to inform the bank managers to deal with certain events. The system has revolutionized the banking security equipment by turning it from being a passive tool into a proactive intrusion prevention system. Besides the abovementioned verticals, Hikvision also has other solutions and many successful cases in buildings, justice, education, and energy. For instance, for commercial buildings, Hikvision has a central management system to integrate video surveillance, access control, time attendance, alarm, and intelligent parking systems with LPR, together. Since it is highly integrated, Hikvision can build up a
safe, automated, and intelligent building. Finally, He said with all these experiences in solution design and vertical market penetration, Hikvision is ready to expand to more project markets in the APAC region.
Local Touch, Global Perspective Being localized is top priority especially in doing business in overseas countries. Till now, the company has been recognized in many markets with 16 overseas branch offices worldwide, providing instant local service and support to regional market. Derek Yang, Sales Director for APAC at Hikvision Digital Technology shared Hikvision’s localization in India as an example. Since the establishment of Hikvision's Indian joint venture in 2009, the company has set up a local warehouse, as well as a post-sales maintenance center and a
call center, to provide timely service and product delivery to the local customers. Currently, there are a total of 21 offices spread throughout the country. As Yang noted, to best meet the customer’s specific need is the key driving force behind Hikvision’s success. Compared to other brands from Asia, Hikvision established its local service point quite early in the APAC region, Yang added. Hikvision set up a post-sales support center in Hong Kong in 2008 to provide technical support for the entire Middle East and African area, due to its unique geographic location. After Hong Kong, its Singapore office and Australia office were established to particularly provide localized service to customers in the Southeast Asian and Oceania region. Hikvision is also looking at setting up branch offices in Thailand, Korea, and Japan in the future. With all these local service points, Hikvision can better fulfill the end-user requirement for solutions, support different projects, and help systems integrators provide more efficient services to their customers. It is also worth mentioning Hikvision’s successful projects in the Malaysian alarm monitoring center, safe city project in Singapore, and Korean street monitoring system, and much more.
Continues to Grow Overseas Depending on its capability in providing vertical-specific solutions and leveraging its experience in the domestic market, Hikvision will surely be quickly elevated to other new and higher-end markets, especially in overseas markets. Asia takes the initiatives, and then, more and more other overseas countries. In the near future, we can expect a brand new Hikvision, as a total solution provider, in the security market.
Hikvision’s Successful Stories in APAC Malaysia: No More False Alarms via Video Verification Hikvision designed a video verification alarm system for one of the well-known security service companies in Malaysia. Traditionally, alarm monitoring mainly depends on the phone line to notify the police; however, security service providers cannot verify the alarms via the video. Hikvision’s video verification alarm system provides them with the capability to immediately react to events. With video, the number of false alarms has been largely reduced, which also helps the security service company increase their working efficiency. Derek Yang, Sales Director for APAC at Hikvision Digital Technology also said, with this system, the service provider is able to include around 50,000 families in Malaysia and stay competitive in the market.
Singapore: Secures the City and Enhances Police Efficiency Hikvision designed an integrated IP video system by installing and managing 100,000 IP cameras for the safe city project in Singapore to increase safety in the city. Video surveillance systems also help the police solve the problem of shortage in manpower. “Since the coverage of implementation was so big, we had to deal with different challenging network environments with different bandwidths,” Yang said.
Korea: Keeps Cars Moving and City Regulated In Korea, Hikvision has also implemented a lot of surveillance cameras especially in street intersections. “The Korean government needs a powerful street monitoring system, including license plate recognition (LPR) and camera control system, to connect with its traffic fining system and GPS system. Hikvision, therefore, provided them the IP cameras for traffic light control and tracking cars,” Yang said.

New Face to Video Surveillance Editor’s Note:
Nowadays, video surveillance is prevalent in public places. From high-end retail stores, hospitals, casinos, schools, to streets, people can find it almost anywhere. Even though people understand that surveillance is for their own safety, the feeling of being “watched” is inevitable and can even feel a little creepy when cameras show up in front of them. Different from traditional cameras, a few manufacturers have come up with fresh ideas on how to turn cameras into animal decorations and bright LED lights. In this way, they have made security more invisible and less intimidating, and also, more energy-saving.

New Order,
New Game The new regime in Thailand has finally put the country on its feet. Overall outlook of the country seems quite positive for most of the companies in the security industry. Besides stabilizing the country, the government’s new policy and campaign also caused the ecosystem in the market to change. While the market is starting to shuffle, companies have also branched out throughout the Thai market. BY Jill Lai

ix months after Prayuth Chan-ocha was sworn in as the new prime minister, Thailand has finally started to enjoy stable economic growth. With the political conflicts becoming more settled, the number of projects are also picking up. According to the governor of the Bank of Thailand, Prasarn Trairatvorakul’s speech, posted on the website of the government public relations department, the Thai economy will continue to recover at an annual growth rate of 4 percent this year, from 0.8 percent in 2014. “Private consumption, investment, and government spending will be the main drivers of growth. Lower oil prices certainly have also given consumers a hand in the recovery process,” he said.

ccording to Somchai Prajaksoot, MD of Digital Focus, the exclusive distributor for Hikvision, the company continues to move up in the high-end project market in Thailand. In order to differentiate itself from others and also consolidate its share in the high-end market, the company has started to represent FLIR thermal cameras and the wireless technologies from Firetide. On the other hand, to maintain its territory in the mid-to-low-end market, Digital Focus also promotes the Jigami (OEM brand) product line from Hikvision to provide market quality products and services. Rio Mao, Sales Director of Overseas Business Center for APAC at Dahua Technology also talked about its future development in Thailand, as he mentioned that since Dahua is very strong in the transportation sector with its innovative ITS and LPR technologies, the company will continue to get more pioneering projects in Thailand, such as highways and intersections. Dahua, therefore, established a team to focus on specific vertical markets and projects for overseas markets. Another vertical, retail, is also one of Dahua’s focuses.
military junta’s involvement and evaluation over some hefty projects have brought a new order to the market. The governor also pointed out that some new campaigns, like fighting corruption, will make Thailand “undergo structure reforms.” In the security industry, the new order is also reshuffling its sales channels, now, and for the future. Ivan Tan, Deputy Director of Product & Technology at D-RON Singapore, the leading distributor for Milestone in Asia said, “The anti-graft activities from the government have been quite widespread in the market. The new government’s strategy and determination are very clear and firm, which force everyone to play a fair game. It also provides ethical companies, like us, more opportunities in this market.” With the new order in the security market, government procurement has also become more transparent and more open. The market has become more diverse and attractive to more companies, coming from different countries. The ones who originally focused on the mid-range market sector in the country also have more opportunities to get involved in the government sector. a&s sat down with several companies to discuss their expectations and main strategies toward the Thailand market.
Newly Established Companies Ready to Target Thailand
Seeing the high demand of national infrastructures, smart city projects, and strong local consumer spending, some new companies with strong technology background are also ready to enter the Thailand market.

ccording to Kent Wu, MD of Vemsee Technology, Vemsee was established in 2013 in Thailand. The company has the key technologies to develop its own video management software and also a variety of product lines, tailoring to different verticals ranging from critical infrastructure to the residential sector. For example, Vemsee has a unique product line in intelligent photoelectric anti-intrusion alarm systems, which can be used on most of the perimeters in prisons and other critical infrastructure. Especially noteworthy, it is technically supported by TBL, a company with a 10-year experience in the prison sector as well as manufacturing and systems integration in China. The unique technologies of the photoelectric fence have helped incidents of false alarms become largely reduced. Besides this, Vemsee also expects a lot of growth from education, especially in nursery schools. By providing IP video surveillance systems,

parents can monitor their kids anytime they are at school. Finally, the company also has a video surveillance solution for chain stores to efficiently manage their stores with the least manpower. Lee Kok Hai Burt, Sales Director for APM Global also explained why the company started to look at the Thai market. He said that APM is a Singaporean company, focusing on manufacturing auto gates, and distributing anti-terrorism equipment and car park systems. The company just established their brand in 2013, but it has years of experience in doing OEM. APM has key technologies in designing and manufacturing their systems, from precision engineering machineries to circuit design. To lower the total cost in shipping and after-sales maintenance, APM manufactures the machineries and assembles the whole systems in Thailand. They would like to do local manufacturing and then sell them locally to systems integrators. Strictly following the company’s policy in quality assurance and quality control, the company will make sure that they can provide high-quality systems even though manufacturing is done locally. According to the company, even competing with Chinese companies, APM products are still very cost-competitive and definitely carry higher quality, based on the Singaporean quality and technology. The company has a solid business base in Singapore and would like to expand to overseas countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, and Indonesia. The biggest potential for APM is in commercial buildings, data centers, banks, schools, factories, condominiums, etc.
Solution Providers Target Thailand
Even though the Thai market is still dominated by analog products, the growth of IP video and access control products is increasing exponentially year by year. Some companies with strong software backgrounds are also ready to target Thailand.

-RON is a value-added reseller and distributor for many leading brands in the Southeast Asian region, with a stronghold in Singapore. With Milestone, a global leading brand in video management software, D-RON is ready to expand in Thailand. Being aware of the intense competition globally in terms of price on hardware and the dynamic market for IP video in multiple applications, such as home surveillance and Internet of Things, since three years ago, D-RON has transformed into a solution-centric company, which provides consultancy
on solutions as a valued added services for a variety of projects. The company claims that depending on Milestone’s “open” VMS platform, it is able to stand out from other total solution providers or hardware-based companies. Ivan Tan, Deputy Director of Product & Technology at D-RON Singapore said, “Since we promote open platforms, our clients are not constrained to buy the cameras from certain brands. And just because we don't limit ourselves to the choice of brands, our clients are more comfortable in doing business with us.” Matrix is also another softwarebased company, which is able to provide an integrated IP-based access control system. Established in 1991, Matrix provides telecom and security solutions for modern businesses and enterprises. In the security segment, Matrix has launched access control, time attendnace, and IP-based video surveillance solutions. Saishav Vasant, Sales Engineer of International Business at Matrix said, “The company offers a
comprehensive and integrated solution which can be easily designed for different applications, such as time-attendance, access control, visitor management, cafeteria management, contract workers management, and IP-based surveillance solution. Since markets such as Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand tend to be more solutionoriented, we have achieved a significant growth in the last two years.” Another example here is the company Advanced Integrated Technology (AIT). Through distributing Mobotix products, AIT is able to consolidate its market share in the high-end market sector. Its targeted markets like universities usually need solutions, not just single products. Therefore, Mobotix products are very competitive compared to other brands in these sectors. Lei Zhang, Assistant Product Manager of AIT said Mobotix products are based on a decentralized concept, so there is no need for extra servers to run the systems. Meanwhile, the camera itself is a computer/system and has already been integrated with other components, like speakers, microphone, PIR sensors, temperature sensors, and shock detectors, so the total cost of ownership is quite low. Most importantly, Mobotix provides free software. For example, “In the past, we delivered 5-megapixel sensor cameras. But at that time, customers could only record in 3 megapixels. This year, by simply upgrading the firmware, customers can record in 5 megapixels. Since the firmware is free of charge, our old customers are very happy about it,” said Zhang. Finally, ZKTeco, an IP-based access control system provider, also has developed a total integrated biometric access control system, “which is able to link other systems, ranging from video surveillance, time attendance, visitor management, and elevator control,” Gary Zhao, Thailand Area Manager at ZKTeco said. Through five distributors in Thailand, ZKTeco is able to expand greatly in different projects. “ZKTeco provides the technology support and service to help our distributors complete projects. In 2015, ZKTeco will have more new projects with turnstile, elevator control, parking systems, etc,” he continued.

The military junta has finally stabilized Thailand. Security and safety of the country have been prioritized in the new government’s policies. National infrastructures and city surveillance projects are now widespread in Thailand from Bangkok to other regions, and from urban to rural areas. Adding to that, the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), scheduled for establishment this year, is going to increase business activities among ASEAN countries, with Thailand, located in the central part, playing a main role.

o matter how the political unrest influences the market, Thailand, with many major infrastructures and other government projects, is still ranked as number one or two in Southeast Asia, in terms of market size. Ong Kah Seong, GM for Thailand at Robert Bosch Security Systems pointed out, “There are many MRT lines and rail projects being rolled out now in Thailand. For the MRT, there is the Purple Line, Blue Line extension, Green Line extension, Red Line, Pink Line, Orange Line, and Yellow Lines being planned from now to 2020. On the rail side, there are also government initiatives to double track the rail connections and be part of the ASEAN rail network in which Thailand is the most strategically located.” “The Bangkok MRT will install IP surveillance cameras at their new stations and depots. The targeted
completion date will be around 2016 for both the Purple and Blue line. On the education side, the Ministry of Education also allocated budget for school surveillance systems in five southern provinces of Thailand with more than 3,000 cameras expected in the initial phase," Thongchai Watanasoponwong, Country Manager for Indochina Region of Axis Communications also added. Overall, the transportation sector has brought huge opportunities for the security industry in Thailand.
City Surveillance The biggest project to note should be the safe city project, covering all over the areas in Thailand. The police in Bangkok plan to spend around US$3.1 million on 1,500 video surveillance cameras and red light cameras that will be deployed to over 300 different intersections in Bangkok, according to the Bangkok Post. The cameras will help the police better manage traffic, with the cameras expected to be in use by next year. Furthermore, the Miracle Eyes initiative, which was proposed by the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) back in March of last year in an effort to boost public safety, is now starting to come to fruition. The proposal of having one million video surveillance cameras installed in Bangkok over the next three years is relying on help from the private sector after it was denied its original budget request. According to The Nation, Kasikorn Bank will support the initiative by installing 60,000 cameras in all of its Bangkok branches, with further plans to install over 300,000 cameras across its branches nationwide. The MPB predicts that 100,000 cameras will be installed within the first year, with 300,000 more the second year, and 600,000 the third year.
Projects Grow from Bangkok to Southern Region Outside of Bangkok, the southern region of Thailand is also picking up

its awareness toward security, because of multiple factors. “With the implementation of intelligent IP surveillance cameras in the southern part of Thailand, we foresee strengthened security and welfare of people in the area. The local government agency will be able to handle emergency events like terrorist acts or natural disasters faster and more effectively,” said Watanasoponwong. Ong from Bosch also commented, “The southern region in Thailand will experience good growth in security and safety. It already has had a very good economic basis. More and more people in the southern region look for easy-to-use security and safety solutions.”
Moving from Urban to Rural Areas
FEB 2015 ● www.asmag.com
Another major security project, which has been widely implemented by the government, is to install video surveillance equipment in rural areas. The rural areas have been defeated by high crime rates since Thailand was opened to other ASEAN countries. To reduce the crime rate and improve tourism, the country’s sub district administrative organization (SAO) were also granted with millions of Thai Baht to improve security in villages. Bosch also noted that the demand from rural areas is increasing. Ong agreed and said
36
that information is spreading much faster than before with social media, and the focus on safety and security situations in rural areas has increased as they are much more visible than before. As a result, the demand has increased. “More projects were re-initiated around the end of 2014. Outside of Bangkok, Dahua was also rewarded with some projects from the small villages and cities in the borders,” said Rio Mao, Sales Director of Overseas Business Center for APAC at Dahua Technology. “We have some projects from SAO in some small cities all over the country as well. There are about 800 projects; and we got around 200 of them. Each SAO got around 1 million Thai Baht for installing eight cameras for surveillance in a village,” said Somchai Prajaksoot, MD of Digital Focus.
Private Sector Maintains Economic Growth Although government spending is very important to the security industry, the private sector still plays a very crucial role in Thailand in maintaining its growing momentum, especially when the country experiences social unrest and political upheaval. After all, in 2014, the private sector, such as in retail and commercial buildings, still outperformed the public sector. Lei Zhang, Assistant Product Manager of Advance Integrated Technology (AIT), a leading distributor of Mobotix, also commented, “Although the company is more focused on the public sector, AIT was not affected much from the previous social instability. But there should still be a lot of opportunities in the private sector, during this difficult time. The general public tends to buy more security equipment in order to keep themselves secure.” Prajaksoot also said, after being awarded projects from PTT, a Thai oil and gas company, which utilizes Digital Focus' 3G mobile DVRs in their oil & gas trucks, Digital Focus finally experienced a growth at 20 percent last year despite the decreased projects from the government side. Recently, Digital Focus also partnered with AIS, a 3G service provider, with 3G mobile DVRs for AIS customers.
Thailand, as Indochina Hub Finally, the country is expected to grow with more stability due to its unique geographic location as the Indochina hub and because of its extensive acknowledge and fast adoption of new technologies. Furthermore, the AEC will also help ASEAN grow even faster. In the future, “the government will invest in infrastructure and this will spur private investment, coupled with increasing urbanization of ASEAN countries, and the building industry and security & safety industry will benefit and grow. Due to AEC and Thailand being the manufacturing hub of ASEAN, I believe that the country will reap the maximum benefits,” noted Ong. In 2015, Thailand should be ready to get on their feet and embrace more new technologies and solutions for all the upcoming projects. However, the economic growth still strongly ties with the government policy and social status, which might make the country’s future harder to predict.

efore the election in 2014, foreign investments were slow due to investor hesitation and uncertainty in what the new government would bring. Now, Prime Minster Narendra Modi’s plans to build 100 smart cities and increase the speed of project clearances has resulted in positive foreign and local investments. Combined with the prospect of rate cuts, GDP growth is still likely to rise to 6.4 percent in 2015 from 5.6 percent in the previous year. The government’s reform agenda to revive economic growth in the country
38
includes increasing foreign direct investment in the insurance sector from 26 percent to 49 percent, which is predicted to result in US$6 to 8 billion in capital inflow, and to amend archaic labor laws to reduce regulatory interference while coaxing employees with more benefits, as well as promoting the “Make in India” campaign. As having the largest private-public partnership (PPP) market in the world, 3P India will be implemented to introduce more PPPs into the mainstream of project execution, as well as plans to upgrade infrastructure in 500 urban areas. Along with this, land purchase rules will be changed to allow for easier acquisition of land for infrastructure and industrial projects. India’s GDP advanced to 5.3 percent in the third quarter of 2014, Barron’s Asia forecasted India’s economic performance in 2015 to continue optimistic growth as new Prime Minister Modi brings in higher private sector investment. To further boost GDP growth, the government also plans to introduce value added tax (VAT) that can replace more than a dozen taxes that increase incentives for corruption, which can add another 1.7 percentage points to GDP growth if successful. With the implementation of all of Modi’s reform agenda, the next few years for India will be
very promising. “Today, India has an elected new government with a good majority in the upper house of parliament to help and take firm policy decisions. This will attract foreign investments and help the economy to pick up quickly. Signs of improvement have already started, I believe within a year, we can see a clear shift,” said Anil Dhawan, Chief Executive of DB Secure Solution. According to an industry expert, with the help of the new government, dramatic changes can be seen, and opportunities will open up for big cases. 2015 will be a very promising year for various security members due to the political situation, which will help generate more business.

that have taken place in the last decade, ranging from mass terrorist attacks to public crimes against women has created the need for safer cities. The South Asian Terrorism Portal has identified 179 terrorism groups operating in India, and the threat has worsened in recent years. In 2008, a series of attacks killed 172 people, and in 2011, three bomb explosions at different locations killed 26 people. Security awareness and security demand is therefore a major priority for both government and private sectors.
Promising Indian Security Market, 2015
FEB 2015 ● www.asmag.com
Today, the strong growth of the Indian security market has gained attention among foreign players as well as investors. According to an industry expert, “Compared to 2013, 2014 has seen a slightly higher growth in the security market. 2013 was slow, mainly because everyone was waiting and observing the market.” However, the future for the market holds high expectations. Coupled with new technologies, new product launches such as HD over coaxial cable, the market demand will be stimulated. Growing awareness on the benefits of electronic security equipment among cities is expected to escalate
40
demand for electronic security equipment in the near future. “The government will also bring another positive impact, which is to promote security awareness, as well as standards for installation and manufacturing, which will create an overall market growth drive,” said Dhawan. “Following the past two or three year’s downturn, the minimum growth for 2015 will be at least 10 to 15 percent. As for the new government, a lot of infrastructure projects are being pushed forward, and it will take a minimum of at least 18 months before security demand comes in,” Dhawan continued. Another driver for the security market is the migration to IP, and demand from
Make in India The government has been strongly promoting to the entire world that India is the go-to manufacturing hub, with Prime Minister Modi stressing that the goods manufactured in India should have zero effect on the environment, as well as zero defects. According to Ashutosh Fotedar, Assistant Manager Sales of Tamron India, the country has potential in finding opportunities in OEM businesses to work with camera manufacturers. Indian companies may provide the prototypes, and shift the manufacturing to other places after customer’s approval. The domestic industry will develop further in order to decrease the country’s dependency on foreign manufacturers. “In the past, India imported several products. The new government is encouraging locally manufactured products – MAKE IN INDIA,” explained Anil Dhawan, Chief Executive of DB Secure Solution. “This will also apply to the security industry. Hopefully, it should replace many security products
currently imported from China. Many of the Chinese products are lacking the standard a good customer in India is looking at. This way it will be advantageous to improve the economy and also bring high quality locally supported equipment,” he added. It is probable that some local companies will start to focus more on local manufacturing, though in the short term domestic demand is not high enough to sustain local manufacturing, as China’s manufacturing services provide many advantages to companies, Dhawan warns.
low-end IP cameras to quality IP cameras. According to an industry expert, at least 20 percent of his clients are turning towards IP, which can effectively create high revenue. “The IP market is segmented, dividing between premium and low-end markets. A premium IP camera is reliable and has good quality, support service, and distribution, which has features such as VCA, facial recognition, and people counting,” said Sudhindra Holla, Country Manager of India at Axis Communications. With price as a key issue, people are always looking for good quality products at low prices. “The total cost of ownership (TCO) depends on how hardware and software are made to work together. Unless we get this right, we are only working to drop device prices that in turn creates sub-optimal solutions and increased TCO,” Santosh Pillai, Director and CTO of 2020 Imaging explained. With the thriving economy increasing funds for public and private sectors,
the security market is expected to flourish with the growing economy. “As the new government settles the new budget, many projects in infrastructure can be seen, such as for smart city, and even the commercial sector is improving,” said Holla. The security market in India grew from $882 million in 2013 to $953 million in 2014, and is forecasted to reach $1.1 billion in 2015, according to Gartner. “Performance in 2015 will pick up, especially in sectors such as smart city, transportation, infrastructure, banking, and education,” he added. Verticals such as banking and financial services that have had a strong focus on security are now investing in technology approaches that can enable them to grow their business securely.
Constructing 100 Smart Cities Investments of approximately $1.2 trillion will be required over the next 20 years across areas such as transportation, energy, and public security to build smart cities in India, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers. The government’s plan on building 100 new smart cities and develop modern satellite towns around existing cities will open up opportunities for the security industry, mainly for surveillance projects and green building solutions.
Safe City Projects, Ready to Roll Out Covering every area of security from surveillance through PSIM to other physical security equipment, safe city projects will create huge opportunities for security companies. A budget of $1.2 billion will be allocated for safe cities, and under the flagship “safe city” project, the Union Ministry proposes $333 million to develop seven big cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and
41
Hyderabad) with a total investment of $100 billion to focus on technological advancement and automation rather than manpower. India’s first ever safe city project is already underway in Surat, which will be the first city to implement surveillance cameras at every corner. Establishing a partnership with Microsoft and its partners Iconics and SoftTech, the project will be implemented in five phases, which will deploy a network of 5,000 surveillance cameras across 500 locations, covering an area of 150 square kilometers in Gujarat’s second largest metropolis.
million homes every year to help with urban housing shortage, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers. Moreover, with the launch of the smart cities program, smart buildings are essential to help in the successful implementation of smart cities. The intelligent building management systems market is around $621 million and is expected to reach $1.9 billion by 2016. As of August 2014, more than 2,771 green buildings projects were registered with the Indian Green Council, and will be able to deliver integrated lighting, improved comfort and air quality, and most importantly, greater physical security. According to McKinsey & Company, India can save approximately $42 billion every year with efficient energy management. Currently, buildings in India consume approximately 40 percent of total energy generated, and 20 percent of water, as well as 40 percent of carbon emissions, 30 percent of solid waste and 20 percent of water effluents. However with smart buildings, 30 percent of water usage, 40 percent of energy usage and reduction of building maintenance costs by 10 to 30 percent can be saved.
Bright Future Ahead Smart Buildings on the Rise India is expected to emerge as the world’s third largest construction market by 2020, by adding 11.5
As India continues to boom, many who seek will find opportunity in the constantly evolving country. High hopes are held with Modi leading India to the way of success, with expectations for great success in the smart cities project, which will open up opportunities to give the security industry a boost it needs to get back on track.
Indian Security Industry Turns to Solutions
FEB 2015 ● www.asmag.com
Currently, India’s security market is still quite product driven, where people are familiar with various products and are fast to accept them. However, the market competition over price has resulted in companies competing for market share by reducing product price. One major network camera vendor pointed out that their unit prices were forced to drop approximately 10 percent in 2014. Therefore, many security companies turn to solutions or try to enhance products for application use. “Although many vendors claim to be solution providers, very few take a problem-centric solution approach, therefore education and promotions are needed to bridge the gap," Santosh Pillai, Director and CTO of 2020 Imaging explained. With companies such as Autocop (Facility Security Division) transitioning to become a solution provider, focusing on end to end solutions, system integrator (SI) partners are able to

gain better margins from value added services. According to Maluik Shah, CEO of FSD at Autocop, “We provide central monitoring systems, command and control systems to SIs to they can provide central monitoring services to end users. For example, in events with banks that have more ATMs and branch offices, a central monitoring system can provide ATMs with better protection.” Tamron also has moved to targeting customers through an application based approach rather than just box selling their products, educating customers that their lenses give good quality results for instances in automatic number plate recognition and facial recognition. The company will penetrate deeper into the market, with their main focuses on city surveillance, petroleum, oil and gas, ITS, and industrial sectors, said Ashutosh Fotedar, Assistant Sales Manager for Tamron India.
CP PLUS to Implement H.265 for Reduced Bandwidth Needs CP PLUS FOCUS
CP PLUS Teknologix Labs is set to implement H.265/HEVC standard in its upcoming range of video surveillance devices. An immediate successor standard to H.264, H.265 standard offers various improvements over H.264.
H
.265 implementation has generated huge optimism given the industry’s struggle with shortage of bandwidth, spectrum, storage, and imminent need to take growing HD content for multi-platform delivery. A video coding format is a content representation format for storage or transmission of digital video content (such as in a data file or bitstream). Examples of video coding formats include MPEG-2 Part 2, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10), H.265 (also known as HEVC, high efficiency video coding), etc. The existing standard H.264 offers 40 percent to 50 percent bitrate reduction over MPEG-2, yet it has limitations of delivering HD content for broadcast and online. With the 4K resolution, or ultra HD (UHD), cameras being introduced as a revolution in video technology, the need for an improvement on the H.264 standard was overdue. H.265 meets the UHD rendering requisite over even lesser bandwidth. H.265, or HEVC, doubles the data compression ratio compared to H.264/MPEG-4 at the same level of video quality. Alternatively, it can provide substantially improved video quality at the same bitrate. It can also support 8K UHD or resolutions up to 8,192 x 4,320. With the implementation of H.265 standards, CP PLUS plans to introduce a range of video surveillance devices that support H.265 decoding and deliver its benefits of over 40 percent lesser bandwidth use. The potential benefits offered by H.265 standards are as below: • Accelerate demand and sale of 4K/UHD screens which has been largely limited due to large
price difference and absence of UHD content. H.265 can offset the second challenge. • H uge opportunities from reduced bitrate requirements enabling broadcasters and broadcast and online vendors to bundle more channels/content on existing delivery mediums. • Extend far greater video quality experience compared to H.264 encoded sequence at the same bitrate. • Ability to offer higher quality video for bandwidth constrained mobile networks. • Realize differentiated and premium 4K content, multi-view encoding, etc.
“H.265 encoding standard is one of the major encoding standard which will allow us to implement 4K solutions while keeping all network bandwidth on the bay. It will be a significant development for the future technological growth in HD surveillance.” — Yogesh Dutta, COO, CP PLUS

The Rise of Asian VMS
Asian companies dominate production of surveillance cameras; their presence in the market has greatly led to lower costs and the commoditization of the camera industry. But will the same be true for video management software (VMS) vendors? a&s spoke with several vendors from Taiwan, India, and Korea to hear about the strengths and plans for future expansion.
I
BY Israel Gogol, Freelancer
n order to find out what differentiates Asian video management software (VMS) vendors from their competitors in Europe and North America, a&s spoke with Indian-based i2V Systems, Korean Innodep and VMsoft, and Taiwanese NUUO and Genius Vision. Despite hailing from different countries and different backgrounds, there were more similarities than differences in their answers regarding the Asian VMS market and how Asian players differ from North American and European brands.
Differences Between Asian and Other Brands
FEB 2015 ● www.asmag.com
Despite seemingly being a universal product, different market conditions influence the way Asian VMS vendors operate compared to their North American and European competitors. “Asian and American-European markets are different,” said Sumit Aggarwal, Founder of Indian VMS vendor i2V Systems. “In the Asian market you need to focus on quantity more than quality but in the American market the scene is completely opposite. In Asia there are lots of Chinese brands which are prominent in the market and if a VMS wants to thrive, besides very competitive pricing, it will have to integrate camera brands even on a daily basis and hence lots of customization is required in comparison to the American market. This is the very big reason American and European VMS companies face difficulty trying to enter the Asian market.”
Aiming at High-end Markets i2V focuses on high-end markets which include large installations like city surveillance, malls, banking and finance, as well as mid-level markets like
44
surveillance in prestigious schools, hospitals, residential communities, retail, etc. “We prefer high-end markets because this is where i2V can provide maximum value. In small to mid-segments (less than 25 cameras), where budget is also a constraint, most customers prefer to buy OEM-based NVR or OEM free VMS,” described Aggarwal. Korean VMS providers Innodep and VMsoft have had similar experiences. “Innodep’s fields of business include city, county, and district government integrated systems, unmanned traffic control systems, intelligent image processing systems (situation recognition, vehicle number recognition, license plate recognition [LPR]), and infrastructure support (consulting services, IT outsourcing, hardware, software). We also provide solutions for public institutions, hotels, subways, power plants, shopping malls, financial institutions, and many more,” detailed Grant Lee, CEO of Innodep. “Although, we keep a traditional systems integrator business, we try hard to get involved in the market through government procurement contracts, which could be the
Better Understanding of Local Problems One of the key benefits a local VMS vendor can provide end users is a better understanding of the specific challenges faced in that country. “One example of this feature that we developed was handling of frequent camera disconnections due to bad power supply,” said Sumit Aggarwal, Founder of i2V Systems. In addition, Aggarwal emphasized the importance of training in the Indian market, where most operators may not be that well-educated in operating computers or have poor understanding of the English language.

biggest market in video surveillance.” Since 2014, Innodep has paid attention to government procurement markets where there are over 1,000 channels applied. “This can be the high-end market for us, as it also needs high-end solutions such as GIS, LPR, sound detection, and face recognition to be integrated. In the future, Innodep would like to launch more particular products and services which will apply to operations and customer-oriented services tailored to the needs of big data,” he summarized. Similarly, Justin Kim, GM of Business Development and Marketing at VMsoft said, “We’ve focused on the high-end IP CCTV market, especially public and government sites, such as nuclear plants, military camps, various government authorities and social infrastructures, and so on.” Kim further noted, “With this professional experience and in-depth engineering knowhow, we’d like to extend our business area to middle-end commercial sites with more market-friendly solutions and software flexibility.” He also mentioned that the company wished to expand to neighboring Asian countries in the coming year. “NUUO entered the South Asian market in 2006 and we’ve been focusing on middle-end segments and hybrid platforms which gave us a good standpoint at that time,” said Vicky Wu, South Asia Sales Manager at NUUO Systems. “This year we

are preparing more customized features that fit different verticals to grow this market. We are also going to introduce our local presence in four countries for project consulting. We believe this could bring the best support and service to our partners.”
Sumit Aggarwal, Founder, i2V Systems Grant Lee, CEO, Innodep
Most Asian VMS vendors can offer a more cost effective solution for projects that use around 16 channels.
The Key Benefit: Local Support and Localization Technical features are not the only consideration when thinking about which VMS system to choose. One has to consider many other factors such as training, documentation, integration options, and technical support. “I admit that western VMS vendors have quite a strong privilege over Asian vendors,” said Kim. “Besides well-built brands, they offer superior documentation, marketing support programs, well-organized software program sets, strong integration with major brands, and so on. They are the ones that initiated the concept of VMS in the market.” However, VMS has now shifted to become more of a service and solution rather than just a product, and this places great importance on ongoing support. “I believe that the service in Asia is more on a face-to-face basis, and flexibility is not only in strategy but also in the product itself. In the Korean market, we had many negative feedbacks from customers claiming that western brands are too strict to customize, integrate, and negotiate. That’s why more and more customers switch original major brands to local brands,” Kim added. A similar opinion was stated by Aggarwal: “Once a customer has tried a VMS where he gets minimal or no support, mainly from North American or European brands, he prefers to choose a local VMS next time that has better and cheaper long-term support.” Wu echoed, “Asian VMS vendors have higher flexibility to support their customers in projects.” Since their headquarters are in Asia, Asian vendors have good advantages in local language support and also share the same time zone in Asia. “Our product has a high cost-performance ratio with many added-value features and most important is that it’s easy to use so that anyone can manage the system easily,” she continued. “The VMS market is growing and the very first VMSs which were global brands are decreasing in market share. Ten years ago, only Genetec and Milestone were present in the Korean market. Now, local brands have over 80 percent of market share,” said Lee. He went on to explain that though there isn’t much difference in features, global brands usability and UX/UI are still leading the market. However, over 90 percent of the local city-wide surveillance market is using local VMS. “Customization together with localization is the biggest entry barrier to the local city surveillance market for global VMS,” said Lee. “Recently, there
have been efforts from the global VMS to localize, but still the competitive edge is with the local brands,” he added. In regard to why domestic VMS companies are preferred by government projects, Lee explained that local companies can develop and maintain support for additional features when needed. “For example, in local governments, the number of new cameras increases, or existing ones needs to be replaced every year. Foreign VMS brands have limitations in supporting these purposes.” Lee added that the same is true for Asian vendors in overseas markets, noting that “The most difficult problem for Asian VMS brands is to maintain technical support for the products they have sold.”
Difficulties in Overseas Expansion All the vendors we spoke to have a strong presence in their local market and are actively engaged or planning to expand their operations overseas. Technology does not seem to be a barrier for overseas expansion — perception, language, and cultural differences pose a much more serious challenge. Several obstacles were pointed out that Asian companies face while trying to do business abroad. “It is the orthodox nature of the market which believes that American and European brands are always better than Asian. So, when we go to the global market as an Indian or Asian company product, people seem to give us second preference,” said Aggarwal. “Similarly, in our market we face lots of issues in which customer say, ‘if you are local you would not be good.' Although i2V VMS is an excellent quality product, it faces brand issues sometimes,” he added. Another point raised by Aggarwal is intellectual property rights. “There are stringent patent laws in North America and Europe. Because of these laws, it gets a little harder for an Asian vendor to enter these markets,” he explained. Innodep's Lee said, “We wouldn’t say that our products cannot compare to
Vicky Wu, South Asia Sales Manager, NUUO Systems Justin Kim, GM, Business Development and Marketing, VMsoft
the well-known brands in the world. In other words, we feel quite sure that our product quality can compete with other brands and our latest IP-Matrix appliance is second to none.” Despite this, Lee pointed out that obstacles still exist. “The language obstacle tends to be the biggest problem for us. Translating Korean into English (e.g., brochures, manuals, catalogs), and speaking English with our customers requires not only high proficiency in English but also knowledge about the partners’ local culture. In our overseas sales team, we take this issue into account in order to make communication with our customers successful.” However, not all companies believe there are disadvantages to being an Asian company. “We don't see being an Asian brand has any affect to our product design and business,” stated NUUO’s Wu. “Different products have their own advantages in functionalities, support, and cost. From our experience, country of origin is the lesser point for customers to consider,” she added. Globalization of companies doesn’t always follow the same path. For some it is an incremental process. A sequence in which after an initial success in the domestic market, the company first exports from its home country to the most geographically and psychologically proximate countries. Other companies are ‘born globals’ initiating international activity from their inception. The ‘born globals’ regard their domestic market as just one of many opportunities in the world. Technological advances and ongoing globalization of markets, falling trade barriers, growing demand for specialized products and the improvement in communication technologies have greatly increased internationalization opportunities, it is now left to wait and see if Asian VMS companies will be able to leverage the abilities and advantages they have in their domestic markets to the international arena.

ast year, the overall access control market grew 7.6 percent, according to IHS. The figure is slightly less than the 10 percent estimated by Memoori Business Intelligence. Many factors contributed to the growth, with a migration towards IP-based solutions cited as a major market driver, especially amid an increase in the construction of new buildings, most of which deployed IP-based solutions. “IHS estimated that in 2014, nearly 60 percent of the global access control panel market was IP-based. Although legacy equipment is still a large portion of the access control market, as new construction ramps back up, nearly all new installations will be installing IP-based access control,” said Blake Kozak, Senior Analyst at IHS. This year, growth in access is set to continue, due to undying demand from users seeking to secure lives and assets. “Security is still one of the top priority concerns in all areas of personal and business coming into 2015. Physical access control is no exception,” said Norana Johar, COO at FingerTec. “I think that the growth will continue at a higher rate as many premises are looking for better ways and better technology to control access to their properties and business premises.” Access control has evolved from traditional card readers to more advanced technologies. While card readers will still be prevalent, technologies like biometrics, mobile credentials, and wireless locks are expected to see increased adoption and usage.
Experts Pinpoint Growth Sectors This year, IHS estimates the overall growth for the access control industry will be 8.8 percent, although that figure is likely to change since this is only the beginning of the year, cautioned Blake Kozak, Senior Analyst at IHS. Regionally, North America will continue to grow, although not by the same margin as last year.“I do think there will be some shifts in the trend, so this year growth may be a little lower in North America, and higher growth is expected especially in APAC and Latin America,”said Jason Ouellette, Product Line Director for Access Control at Tyco Security Products. Mike Sussman, Technical Director at TDSi, echoed that comment.“The market is booming internationally, particularly in Africa and Southeast Asia as these markets develop commercially. Even in the U.K., the construction industry’s growth is picking up pace after the lull of the late 2000s,”he said. While access control has applications in different sectors, growth is set to be particularly noticeable in certain vertical markets. These include: Education: Demand in education continues to be strong given school violence and educators’efforts to attract foreign students. “With so many schools, universities, and colleges that have yet to implement holistic access control solutions in their premises, this could be the area of growth for the access control industry this year,”said Norana Johar, COO at FingerTec. Healthcare: Another area is healthcare, which“continues to see strong growth, especially for electronic locks, to protect patient records, storage closets, drug carts, lockers, among others,”said Kozak. Residential: Residential security is booming in North America as electronic locks and video are helping to drive the smart home adoption. As for other regions,“although the EMEA and Asia have yet to see this trend, there has been high demand for luxury condos and apartments, especially in parts of Southeast Asia,” Kozak said. Utilities: Utilities will continue to see strong adoption, especially in many developing countries that are looking to renew their focus on infrastructure development over the next five to 10 years. SMBs: Demand from small and medium businesses is also growing.“Our belief is in SMBs, which will mainly be driven by two factors,”said Lee Odess, VP of Marketing at Brivo Labs. “First, upfront costs for the system are declining, and second, awareness and demand for the service by this segment are increasing.”
51
Biometrics: Cheaper yet Better The overall trend in biometrics is that they will become less expensive, due to several factors including an increase in supply. “Prices of biometrics hardware are getting cheaper throughout the world due to an influx of newbies in the market, especially from China, and the familiarity of consumer to the technology,” Johar said. “I think the cost will go down slightly because of the market demand and competition, but manufacturers need to introduce unique feature to the existing technology in order to maintain the price.” Indeed, progress has been made in biometrics, both in contact and contactless solutions. The following sections discuss some of the trends in the technology.
Explosive Growth for Facial Recognition
Fingerprint to Still Dominate Contact solutions exist primarily in fingerprint, which is expected to stay the mainstream technology due to its various benefits. “Fingerprint still tends to be the most commonly used biometric, especially since it is affordable and has a small form factor … so I would expect fingerprint to maintain its market leader position compared to other technologies,” said Brad Aikin, Business Leader of Electronic Locks at Allegion, adding that the public is getting more comfortable with biometrics thanks to its incorporation into commonly used

products, for example the iPhone 6. An improvement in accuracy has also helped drive acceptance, not only by critical infrastructure operators — seen traditionally as those with a tendency to use biometrics — but by regular businesses as well. “Now the technology is becoming more mature. Whereas it wasn’t uncommon at all for someone’s fingerprint not to be read, that is becoming less and less the case,” said Bill Kotwicki, Northeast Regional Sales Manager at AMAG. “People are more accepting of it, and again with the lower cost, it’s just a technology that will continue to grow.”
Contactless biometric solutions are primarily in the form of iris scan and facial recognition. According to Mike Sussman, Technical Director at TDSi, iris had its chance a few years ago, yet with one of the major providers removing its product, iris no longer seems to be a growing technology. The biometric that gained huge traction is facial recognition, which, “of all the biometrics, will experience the fastest growth in the near future,” said Paul Bodell, CEO of ECKey Smartphone Access Systems. Facial recognition’s contactless, non-invasive nature makes it a great solution for places where sanitary requirements are stringent. “It is especially ideal for locations such as hospitals where contamination can be an issue,” Sussman said. “The face is also a more reliable biometric marker compared to hands, which can be effected by skin damage or a rough environment, for example a construction site or industrial plant.” Advancements in the technology, such as 3D processing, have contributed to facial’s accuracy and may further drive adoption, although price remains an issue. 3D, for example, requires more processing power and will push up the cost of manufacturing. Price, therefore, is likely to keep 3D facial recognition as a niche product. “Facial recognition is expected to grow more than twice the rate of fingerprint over the next five years but is nearly a tenth the size in terms of revenues,” said Kozak. “While 3D will certainly help advance the technology, the price will continue to be high and will be used in fewer high-security locations compared with other technologies.”
Multimodal Biometrics: Trend or Overkill? To enhance authentication, multimodal biometrics, or the combination of two or more solutions, is an alternative. “The failure rate makes it such that for a population of 25,000, you could be looking at anywhere in the vicinity of 25 to 200 people that will not be able to get a valid fingerprint or iris enrollment for various reasons,” said Jason Ouellette, Product Line Director for Access Control at Tyco Security Products. “Customers are already at the point where they have no choice but to have multimodal or multi-biometrics to provide 100 percent coverage of all staff.” However, popular perception is still such that multimodal biometrics are unnecessary for typical businesses because of
the cost and complexity involved. “That level of security is not necessary other than critical infrastructure, government sites, laboratory sites, and things of that nature. It’s still seen as an overkill, not worth the investment,” said Kotwicki. Some see the use of multifactor authentication, or the use of a biometric along with a token or a password, as a more viable choice. “I believe that more terminals will be sold as dual authentication, and it will be biometric plus card or biometric plus pin,” said Allegion’s Aikin.
With more phones supporting NFC, it's a matter of time before usage increases for access control.
NFC: More and More Ubiquitous NFC is now featured on the iPhone 6 as well as a variety of brands including Alcatel, Asus, BlackBerry, Nexus, HTC, Kyocera, and LG. “With an increasing majority of phones on the market today including NFC functionality within them, it is only a matter of time before the usage increases for access control as well,” Aikin said. However, applications are limited and mostly center around mobile payment, in particular Apple Pay. “Overall, NFC-enabled devices are only one part of the equation. Administering the new services and creating new policies will also need to be addressed,” Kozak said.
BLE: Not to Be Ignored
Mobile Access Picks Up Steam Using the mobile phone to authenticate has become increasingly popular, and this trend is set to continue down the road. One major advantage is that using the phone carries a “care” factor. “The average person is more aware of their phone and its location than any other article they carry with them, including their wallet or key ring,” Aikin said. “Consumers take better care of their mobile device than any other article they carry with them.” The home remains a sector with high growth potential for mobile access, for no other reason than the technology being able to create an automated environment in addition to providing access. Using the mobile device to turn lights or PCs on and off, for example, can now be done at the home, and this trend is set to continue. Right now, there are two competing
mobile authentication technologies, namely near-field communication (NFC) and Bluetooth low energy (BLE). Each has its unique characteristics and is expected to drive the market.
Brad Aikin, Business Leader of Electronic Locks, Allegion Bill Kotwicki, Northeast Regional Sales Manager, AMAG Paul Bodell, CEO, ECKey Smartphone Access Systems
Another area to be looked at is Bluetooth low energy, also known as Bluetooth Smart, which many say offers advantages over NFC. “For NFC, you’ve got to be within a few centimeters of the reader, so it works very much like your traditional plastic card,” Ouellette said. That’s different with BLE, which can detect multiple objects with 30, 40, or even up to 50 feet of range, not to mention the availability of Bluetooth-enabled phones. “You are talking about 3 billion devices that are out there today, that are Bluetooth Smart-enabled, without the use of any special chips. So all we’re doing is leveraging an enormous network of devices that are already out there,” Ouellette said. Applications include controls in smart homes, where lighting and air conditioning can all be adjusted with the mobile device. Medical applications are available as well, allowing users to check their various bodily functions on their phones. NFC or BLE, a major issue that needs to be addressed is security, in particular the interception of data. “I think ‘eavesdropping’ is the most important issue to be dealt with,” said Johar. “People can ‘listen’ to whatever data you are sending.” “When the mobile device is used in a security solution, there needs to be further levels of encryption,” said Rene von Franquemont, EMEA Product Marketing Manager at Honeywell Security. “The way the mobile credential is securely enrolled to the mobile device and how the activation process is set up in both the mobile device and the access control system requires more work.”
Simplify Electronic Access With Wireless Locks While wireless locks aren’t new, adoption is set to grow, especially in places where running wired access control is difficult or isn’t even an option. “Dormitories and college campuses are good places for wireless locks,” Kotwicki said. “For medicine cabinet in hospitals and things like that, I do see wireless technology continuing.”
53
ACaaS as an Alternative to Traditional Systems Administering access control can be a burden, and the industry is taking steps to address this concern. More than ever before, suppliers and integrators are looking at new ways to improve the end user experience, and access control as a service (ACaaS) fits this model. “Like all other products, access control will increasingly move to the cloud. This will eliminate the need for expensive on-site equipment and the associated labor and cabling costs,”said Paul Bodell, CEO of ECKey Smartphone Access Systems.“More companies will move to selling access control on a subscription and usage basis as opposed to a one-time installation with annual software upgrades model.” Brivo Labs highlighted the success that ACaaS has brought to the company.“Our business, which is over 90 percent hosted access control, grows a minimum of 30 percent a year, and we don’t see it slowing down,”said Lee Odess, Vice President of Marketing. IHS, meanwhile, forecasts there will be about 1.8 million total doors of ACaaS in the Americas by 2018. According to IHS, geographically dispersed enterprises are looking more for cloud-based solutions, especially hybrid offerings — a mix of onsite management, monitoring, and hosted infrastructure. As a result, hybrid may see more growth as large systems adopt ACaaS, IHS said.

Ease of installation and low cost are indeed two primary benefits of wireless locks. “Wireless locks are battery operated and only ‘wake up’ when prompted by a digital credential. Wired doors need to be permanently connected to mains power, and that makes them expensive,” said Thomas Schulz, Marketing and Communications Manager for EMEA at Assa Abloy. As for the home, wireless locks are also seeing increasing installations. According to IHS, CAGR for locks in smart homes will exceed 50 percent over the next five years. “Early adopters are there already: we sell thousands of residential digital locks every month in Scandinavia, for example,” said Schulz. “And you only need to attend mainstream technology shows like the CES to see that consumer interest in digital ‘smart home’ products is growing fast.” However, for home usage to popularize, several issues still need to be addressed, especially with regard to the confidence of consumers who have long accepted mechanical locks and keys as the norm. “Are homeowners comfortable giving up the traditional brass lock and key, and do they have the confidence wireless locks provide at least the same levels of security?” asked von Franquemont. Lack of familiarity is another issue. “What happens if the home owner ignores the battery warning and it loses power — they can’t then gain access. Access control will enter the domestic market but not for a few years until a number of these types of issues are resolved,” said Sussman. Currently, there are competing wireless lock standards in the industry. These include the Standard Offline Access Application created by Assa Abloy, Nedap, and others, as well as those that groups like the Physical Security Interoperability Alliance (PSIA) are working on. “The majority of electronic hardware and software providers have expressed strong interest to establish standardization in order to ease the adoption of wireless locks and electronic access solutions in general,” said Aikin.
More and More Integrated Integration of access control with video surveillance or other security systems will continue to prevail. Such integration combining access control with video surveillance, perimeter control, and others offers a more holistic view to security managers, allowing greater visibility of the building and the people being secured. But beyond physical security, access control can do much more, especially when it comes to managing staff, visitors, or other individuals within an entity. “End users continually seek complete back-office integration — that is, facilitating workflow from the time an individual is hired until the time he or she leaves the enterprise,” said Mitchell Kane, President of Vanderbilt Industries. To optimize the performance of an integrated solution, access control is often used as the centerpiece of the system that other systems are integrated to. “It becomes the anchor platform, being able to integrate to provide a wider degree of solutions,” Ouellette said. “This is allowing us to integrate PSIMs, building
management, visitor management, and so on. These things are an extension beyond access control to provide stronger value, but come back to being based on that anchor platform.” IHS’s Kozak, meanwhile, said whether access control serves as the head-end platform depends on the use case. “Some suggest that the building management system will be at the center. Active Directory could also play a central role,” he said. “Overall, access control will have a central role in buildings over the next several years since it can determine logical access, flag a system for possible cyber-attack, integrate with training and HR, and provide an alert on a reader.”
Open Standards Rock To ensure this kind of integration and interoperability, open standards are a must. “Today’s access control
customers require open, easy-to-use products that seamlessly integrate with other systems — especially video surveillance — in order to maximize security,” Kane said. “The adoption of these standards offers many benefits to security system users, of which freedom of choice and dealing with legacy might be the most important,” said Arjan Bouter, Head of Sales at Nedap Security Management. “Introducing standards allows clients to mix and match not only the cameras they need or the card readers that best fit their budget, it also allows them to select the specific functionality that suits their security policy.” The industry has sensed the need for integration and interoperability, prompting organizations like PSIA and ONVIF to drive open standards, especially with Profile C and A as well as the PLAI Agent, which allows multiple brands to be used together in one system. “It is rapidly reaching the stage where security providers that don’t offer interoperability will struggle to maintain a market share when this has become so important to customers, specifiers, and installers,” Sussman said.
Future Prosperity Access control has become a vital, critical component in the security arena, offering protection for homes, companies, and premises as well as helping users raise productivity and achieve more efficient management. Advancements in technology as well as the ability to integrate, supported with open standards, have also benefitted users from different verticals. Prospects for this market look robust and rosy this year and the years to come.

rom Magic Kingdom to Lotte World, Disneyland to Six Flags Great Adventure, theme parks are a huge global business frequented by throngs of adults and children every year. According to market research firm IBISWorld, theme parks in the U.S. have seen a compound annual growth rate of 4 percent over the five years up to

2014, in which total revenue was estimated at US$15.4 billion. Meanwhile, there were 215 million visits to the world’s top 25 amusement parks last year, up 4.3 percent from 2012, according to the Themed Entertainment Association and AECOM’s global attractions attendance report. With so many people visiting parks each day, operators are faced with the need to make day-to-day operations more manageable, efficient, and cost-effective. Issues facing operators, such as ticket fraud, crowd control, and customer experience improvement can now be addressed through ever-advanced technologies such as video surveillance, access control, video analytics, biometrics, and RFID. While these products are traditionally for security purposes, they can also help operations achieve better management, which ultimately leads to increased visitations and revenue.
Amusement park operators are constantly working to find better, easier, and more efficient ways to manage their premises. To that end, operators can be aided by a variety of security technologies, such as video surveillance, access control, RFID, and biometrics to crack down on ticket fraud, control crowds, and enhance the customer experience. The ultimate goal is to bring more visitors and generate higher revenue streams. BY William Pao
MANAGEMENT tion for Theme Parks Clamping Down on Ticket Fraud A horrific problem that theme park operators constantly need to deal with is ticket fraud, which can cause serious damage to their revenue and earnings. Fraud may be in the form of people paying counterfeit currency, charging stolen credit cards, writing fake checks, or using false identity. “Some visitors try to pass their annual tickets on to

friends and relatives, even when they know that it's forbidden,” said Roland Feil, Director of Sales at Dallmeier Electronic. To counter this problem, operators use video surveillance to monitor every move between the ticket booth employee and customers. “Ideally cameras are placed nearby the location where theft or fraud is to be expected. Access to the camera footage can be managed via the video management system, which offers various authorization levels in order to avoid that people without proper clearance can access camera footage,” said Pieter van den Looveren, Manager of Marketing Communication for Video Systems at Bosch Security Systems, adding that video surveillance can also be linked to the operator’s point-of-sale (POS) system to make sure that each transaction is backed by evidence and accounted for. Access control technologies, such as RFID and biometric authentication, can also help crack down on ticket fraud. RFID, which entails the communication between a reader and a tag, can limit critical areas, such as ticket booths, to employees only. “If even more security is required, multi-technology RFID cards can be used,” said Scott Lindley, President of Farpointe Data. “For example, these cards can have text, bar codes, and images printed on them. They can have various mag stripes applied and encoded. They can have microprocessor-based contact smart chips embedded. They can have holograms adhered. And they can have various RFID technologies embedded, such as EPC2, Mifare, and proximity.” Biometrics, which authenticates ticketholders via a part of their body, be it fingerprints or the eye, has been implemented at an increasing

A Frictionless Experience With RFID Making customers satisfied with their trip is always a top concern for operators, who try to make the park visiting experience as frictionless as possible. With RFID, this goal can be achieved. A tram or bus taking visitors to the park, for example, can be facilitated with long-range RFID, which can detect the bus approaching meters away and open the gate accordingly, thus reducing wait time. The technology is especially useful at water parks where paper tickets can easily get wet, wrinkled, or lost. “The RFID credential can be in the form of a wristband, heightening convenience and assuring that it won’t be lost. These can be made so that they are inoperable when removed,” said Scott Lindley, President of Farpointe Data. Another benefit of using RFID is that it allows faster and smoother point of sale at restaurants, concession stands, and others. “The cashless POS is the leading application. Cashless POS is more convenient, which increases spending and decreases transaction time. Making purchases faster and reducing queues adds to customer satisfaction,” Lindley said.
number of amusement parks. “Efficient and reliable biometric authentication provides amusement park operators with a way of ensuring that ticket holders are legitimate,” said Sujan T.V. Parthasaradhi, Director of Biometric Applications at Lumidigm. Video content analysis (VCA), or video analytics, can also play a part. While it may not act as a deterrent to ticket fraud, technologies such as people counting can help make sure there is a match between the number of people entering the park and the number of tickets sold. “What we can provide is technology that can detect how many people have passed through a given area,” said Albert Yang, President of Huper Laboratories. “If the operator sold three tickets, and there were three people passing by, then there is a match.”
Crowd Control Crowd control is a top safety concern for theme park operators and is often stipulated by law. Security technologies can “ensure that no more than the maximum number of visitors, as is prescribed by the safety codes of both the police and fire department, are on the park’s grounds at any point in time. If the quantitative threshold should be reached, an automatic action can be carried out,” Feil said. This is when operators can rely on video analytics tools, in particular people counting, for detection and response. “Cameras with intelligent video analysis can be used to count people or gather crowd density information. Based on certain threshold set, the operator will be alarmed immediately as soon as these levels are exceeded,” said Looveren. People counting software often includes queue management capabilities to alert operators when lines are getting long. “Our queue management software can analyze how many people are in a queue. Once the figure exceeds a certain amount, an alarm will be generated. We can also provide the average time someone is being served. This is useful for management,” said Yang, adding that people counting can be used for other management purposes. “It can be integrated with other building control devices to achieve better energy conservation. If the number of visitors drops from a certain level, then lights can be dimmed or air conditioning can be adjusted automatically,” he said. The whole concept is about efficiency, since operators can take immediate actions once the number of people reaches a maximum threshold. “Additional waiting areas can be opened, or, where the wait
Business Enablement With Security Solutions Security technologies can offer valuable data such as customer behavior and their spending habits. With increased business intelligence, operators can strive to enhance the customer experience, in the process attracting more visitors and raking in higher revenue. “Intelligent video analysis systems offer information about the influx of visitors and the behavior of the guests. What rides or shows are most liked? Which of the attractions are used less and thus have to be signposted more clearly or should be increasingly promoted? What are the peak times in terms of the number of visitors?” commented Roland Feil, Director of Sales at Dallmeier electronic. “Given that the park's management is furnished with sufficient information, it can use them for making decisions, for example for human resource planning or creating special incentives or announcements that will help distributing visitors more evenly across the various attractions.” “This can be a real revenue enabler,” said Albert Yang, President of Huper Laboratories. “Shops, for example, can put hot-selling items on the shelf and take down those that are less popular. They can even sell the information of customer’s behavior to the original supplier.” Using smart cards and tokens for access to parks can also help operators track the visiting and spending habits of the people using them. Some theme parks, for example Disney World, has already issued tokens that not only permit access to the park but also allow guests to access their on-site accommodation and enjoy privileges for rides and payment at concessions or restaurants. “This offers operators a highly detailed account of the preferences and movements that guests make, allowing for targeted marketing and offers to be presented that are bespoke to the customer,” said John Davies, MD at TDSi. “It also provides valuable information on the times of entry, when guests use certain rides and attractions and when transportation is most needed to and from the park.”
59
Tips on Implementation When implementing a theme park project, a rule of thumb is to remember that the park visiting experience must be as smooth as possible. “The overriding goal is to create a positive environment for paying customers, and there can’t be even the illusion of a barrier between a customer and the park,” said Sujan T.V. Parthasaradhi, Director of Biometric Applications at Lumidigm. “Working within a theme park environment is challenging and requires a balance between providing effective security solutions within a public domain,” said Pedro De Jesus, Channel Manager for Security at Gallagher. “Visitors do not want to feel like they are been watched, monitored, or have entered a high security environment. They simply want to have a fun day out with their families. It is essential that security devices blend into the environment, offering a high level of security and safety for all without been intimidating.” The central management software should integrate with various subsystems, especially video surveillance, to offer situational awareness and quick verification. “A real-time flow of information between the two platforms, including a graphical representation via a site map GUI, allows security staff to make immediate, informed security

time is excessive, actions can be taken to increase ride capacities, decrease ride duration, or notify guests so they may choose a different ride or venue,” said Larry Bowe, President of PureTech Systems. However, for any people counting application to be meaningful, it must be accurate. For a venue with 2,000 people, for example, accuracy rates of 90 percent and 99 percent translate into a miscalculation of 200 people versus 20. “If you have 98 percent accuracy rate or even close to 100 percent, that means, you can detect almost everyone passing by. Only if you are accurate, user can perceive more value of your application,” Yang said. Accuracy has always been an issue for VCA deployed in an outside

responses and to document according to the correct records process,” De Jesus said. “The combining of multiple security technologies, even across different manufacturers, is commonplace and results in a collaborative, highly effective, and automated solution,” said Larry Bowe, President of PureTech Systems. “These integrations automatically manage much of the sensor control that was previously done by security personnel, allowing these resources to focus on the proper steps to respond to the incident.
environment like theme parks, since there are much more details to analyze. But, latest developments in the technology, for example 3D stereo imaging, have enhanced VCA’s analytical capabilities and made outside implementation less of a problem. “More information provided by 3D stereo camera will let VCA make better judgment,” Yang said. “Take a tree, for example. VCA of 3D stereo video can easily distinguish between the tree and its shadow through the height information, while 2D video cannot provide the height information. This makes shadows a common problem for 2D VCA.”
Better Managed, Better Experience Security aside, management has become a top priority for amusement park operators. Luckily, with ever more sophisticated security technologies, operators can run their businesses with optimal efficiency and give more satisfaction to visitors as they take rides, shop in stores, and grab a bite at concession stands. With theme parks already a multibillion-dollar industry, better management will sure contribute to higher growth in the years to come.
F
or amusement parks, they deal with several types of security concerns. The first is the protection of premises from various harms. “As like any pubic commercial business, threats that have the potential to prevent or hinder the achievement of objectives that the
business needs to perform, for example processes to keep the business financially safe and compliant from potential threatsources, can range from vandalism, terrorism, criminal activity, and asset loss and safety, said Pedro De Jesus, Channel Manager for Security at Gallagher. Another concern is ensuring the safety of visitors, some of whom may enter or exit rides from the wrong side or wander off to restricted areas. Locating missing children or members of a group is another primary focus. To address those concerns, security products and solutions are deployed, offering vital and much needed assistance to operators as they strive to build an overall safe environment.
Riding on Security Solutions to Safety
BY William Pao
While security products can help with theme park management, operators still rely on them for the original purpose that they were designed for: keeping premises safe and secure. Products and solutions, such as video surveillance, access control, and RFID can help operators achieve their security objectives.
61
Preventing Child Abduction and Theft Video surveillance plays a vital role in keeping amusement parks safe, especially when it comes to detecting and deterring crime. “A premier form of electronic surveillance, video provides real-time monitoring of situations, both at the location and remotely,” said Craig Dahlman, Director of IP Camera Products at Pelco by Schneider Electric. “Video security is a proven solution that can offer a complete answer for protecting customers, co-workers, and employees while additionally offering a watchful eye over property.” Cameras are installed at various points in the park as well as at entrances to prevent various crimes, such as child abduction, although the mere presence of cameras should serve as a deterrent. “Visible installation of cameras and the knowledge that there is a video surveillance system is mostly sufficient to repel potential kidnappers,” said Roland Feil, Director Sales at Dallmeier Electronics, adding that high-definition cameras offering crystal clear images can also help investigate theft and shoplifting, which can be quite rampant at theme parks. Another important value of video surveillance is it can help operators request the necessary compensation should something happen. “It provides indisputable documentation of an event. While serving as a visual deterrent to crime, it gives park managers and security and safety professionals the tools they need to validate liability claims,” Dahlman said.
Locating Lost Visitors FEB 2015 ● www.asmag.com
Tracking lost children or members of a group over a large space like theme parks can be a daunting challenge. RFID, which entails communications between a tag and a reader, can be utilized for this purpose. “It keeps children safe by determining where the child last used the RFID credential. The child's credential can also be programmed not to work without being tagged in tandem with the parent's

credential,” said Scott Lindley, President of Farpointe Data. RFID not only can track lost visitors but also park employees as well. “They can be used to track lone workers, perhaps maintenance workers working in remote parts of the park outside of opening hours, to ensure that staff are accounted for and located, so emergencies can be spotted more quickly,” said John Davies, MD at TDSi. Better yet, RFID can be integrated with other technologies, such as video analytics, to offer visual verification of the missing person. “Passive RFID tags can allow wearers to be tracked at specific portals throughout the park. While passing through those areas, images can be logged to validate the wearer’s location,” said Larry Bowe, President of PureTech Systems. “On a more advanced level, the use of active RFID tags or small GPS transmitter could allow map-based tracking throughout the park and provide the ability to instantly swing a PTZ or zoom a high-resolution fixed camera directly to the child or person in question.” When looking for lost visitors, every second counts. Video surveillance technologies nowadays have video forensic capabilities that enable quick retrieval of critical video data. “With metadata, which adds sense and structure to video surveillance, it is possible to immediately retrieve the correct evidence of hours of recorded materials in a couple of seconds,” said Pieter van den Looveren, Manager of Marketing Communication for Video Systems at Bosch Security Systems. “Today’s video forensic tools can include details on age, clothing color, gender, and even geographic vicinity, allowing a user to literally enter a video search looking for a ‘small male child, wearing a red shirt last seen in the area of a particular ride during a specified time frame,’” Bowe said. “Video clips meeting these requirements can be quickly provided to security for a timely analysis.”
Detecting Suspicious Objects While the technology is nothing new, detecting unattended or suspicious items by way of video analytics continues to be a popular application for theme parks, which might be targets for terrorist attacks. “With the help of modern video content analysis, it is possible to issue an alarm if any objects remain within a certain area for a predefined period of time,” Feil said. “The systems can also prevent the blocking of escape routes, fire rescue paths, or approach roads for ambulances by parked objects, which could have very serious consequences in case of an emergency.”
Intrusion Detection Perimeter protection is a major concern, especially during the night when theme parks are closed. Delinquents, thieves, or burglars trying to climb over the fence and get into the park need to be kept out. Video analytics and cameras are deployed for this purpose, keeping parks safe and sound after business hours. “Intelligent video can determine, for example, if an object approaches an area, from which direction it is coming, or how long it stays in a certain area,” Feil said. “This means that intruders can be detected early on and an alarm can be triggered. Comprehensive validity checks reduce false alarms, which may be triggered by leaves swishing in the wind or animals, to a minimum without missing ‘real’ alarm messages.” Video recording during night time, when everything is dark, presents a daunting challenge. Luckily, advances in lowlight and thermal technologies have solved this problem. “Today’s thermal imagers have become very affordable, and as video analytic technology continues to improve, protection ranges increase greatly,” Bowe said. “The ability for video analytics to utilize a single camera for distances from hundreds of meters to kilometers makes

implementing measures for night-time surveillance more effective and more affordable.”
Access Control in Critical Areas Like any other businesses, theme parks can step up access control through multifactor authentication, or a combination of tokens, passwords, or, for entry into more critical areas, biometrics. “Biometrics is typically used throughout high security or restricted places, for example head-end sever rooms, cash holding rooms, and security operations,” De Jesus said. “Access to these areas can be controlled to ensure only those staff that are appropriately qualified or trained can gain access.” Access control management software can offer rapid authorization or removal of access when required. “Examples include contractors needing access to service the rides or attractions, or temporary staff no longer needed to work in restricted areas,” said Davies.
Ensuring Safety of Equipment
Biometrics is typically used throughout high security or restricted areas, for example head-end server rooms. Access to these areas can be controlled to ensure only those staff that are trained can gain access. Pedro De Jeus, Channel Manager for Security, Gallagher
Finally, security products can help ensure that rides and other types of equipment are in good shape. “Video analytics is desirable for monitoring abnormalities, for example smoke, breakage of a gear, movement of a critical component, or overheating through the use of thermal cameras. They can even be used to ensure certain safety procedures are being followed,” Bowe said.
Safe and Fun People come to amusement parks to relax and have a fun day with their family and friends. They can’t have fun if constantly being bugged by worries that something might happen. With various security products and solutions in place, operators can strive to make their parks as safe as possible and offer the ultimate visitor experience.

he Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort (MBSIR) is one of the most remarkable leisure destinations ever created. Located along the Marina Bay waterfront in Singapore, the MBSIR includes 2,500 rooms, two theaters, a nightclub, a Las Vegas-style casino, and a museum which will be showcasing international exhibitions. The hotel, which is made up of three 55-story towers, boasts a spectacular landscaped roof garden with swimming pool.
The Solution
The US$6 billion project required a high-end security system and opted for the CEM AC2000 system. AC2000 offers a flexible and versatile solution, providing a powerful and fully integrated access control, alarm processing, and photo badging system. AC2000 provides a highly stable solution for installations where security is of paramount importance. AC2000 is relied upon to secure access to important areas such as the casino vault and specialized security departments used to survey the casino floor. MBSIR also utilized CEM’s advanced range of hardware products including intelligent IP card readers. The CEM S610e and S610f fingerprint readers have been installed in high security areas with third-party readers installed at less secure areas.

CEM Intelligent IP Card Readers
MBSIR has over 500 S610e access control readers. The S610e reader supports all card technologies and has a large graphical LCD which is used to display a number of messages to cardholders depending on their privileges (e.g., access denied, wrong time zone, card expired). The reader, which has on-board Ethernet connection, communicates directly with the AC2000 host server, removing the need for an intelligent control panel in the system design. With an internal database, the S610e gives full off-line card validation

and decision making at the point of entry, even when host communication is not available. The resort also uses over 100 S610f fingerprint readers to control access to restricted areas where an additional biometric layer of security is required (e.g., entrance into casino vault). The LCD will display predefined messages such as “place finger” and “bad biometric.”

It is the first controller in the industry to reliably supply power and communications to a complete door set via one Cat 5e/6 cable. The key benefit of the DIU 230 PoE+ is that it eliminates the need for both a mains connection and a local power supply to the door; therefore, there are no door supplies anywhere within the resort.
Fully Integrated Security Solution The MBSIR project required integration with a number of external systems. CEM was required to integrate with the central control and monitoring system (CCMS), the key management system, the video surveillance system, and the HR system, amongst others. BACnet protocol was used for high-level interface to the CCMS. The high-level interface allowed CEM to send water leak state to the CCMS. If a water leak is detected, AC2000 sends alarms to the CCMS. This was an important issue due to the fact that the hotel has a rooftop pool; therefore, any water leaks could result in serious consequences. The security team at MBSIR requested an XML interface from the HR system to the CEM access control system in order to populate basic staff information. It was important for the MBSIR security team to be able to efficiently manage employee details. The interface fields can be used for collecting uniforms, fast food access, and ID badging. The CEM visual imaging pass production system (VIPPS) allows users to produce permanent and temporary ID badges. Security staff can enroll users and capture fingerprint templates using a user-friendly ID badging application. The key management system increases security around significant areas of the resort. CEM developed an interface to automatically transmit card data from the AC2000 to the system. A file which contains the full list of key safe users is sent to the key system and the necessary user records are created. The AC2000 system at the MBSIR was also integrated with the video surveillance system. The AC2000 external interface enables the administrator to specify that

when a particular alarm occurs on the CEM device, a message/command is sent to the third-party system. For every alarm of interest the following data is sent by the AC2000 to the video surveillance system: the alarm name (e.g., door forced), the location of the alarm (e.g., door A, main entrance), and the time/ date at which the alarm occurred.
Future CEM has provided MBSIR with a futureproof and fully integrated security solution that has been designed to grow along with the resort.

Fujinon Lens
Zooms in on Security n By the a&s Editorial team
Fujifilm, a world-known maker of high-quality lenses, hopes to capitalize on the ever-expanding security industry in the APAC region by utilizing their new series of specialized lenses specifically catered towards the needs and wants of the evolving markets.
T
he Fujifilm-made Fuijnon zoom lenses are fast becoming utilized in the surveillance market, especially in the APAC region. In line with the rapidly developing IP infrastructure, the Fujinon lenses are predominately catered and specialized for the many needs of the surveillance industry — whether it be long range, anti-vibration, crystal-clear images, or long-lasting and reliable lenses. Take Fujifilm’s new release, the Fujinon D60x series zoom lens for example. It stands out amongst others in terms of long-range surveillance. Specifically aimed at producing high-quality images at high magnification, the series of lenses boosts a host of powerful features, including auto focus, optical anti-vibration, anti-fog filters, 2x image extenders, and more.
Market Standpoint Aimed at a fast-growing and fast-evolving market in APAC, David Foo, Assistant Regional Marketing Manager, Optical Devices Business Division at Fujifilm Asia Pacific, explained that terrorism can be a big threat for many countries in the

APAC region, and as such there is a huge market potential not just in Asia but also in the whole world to strengthen their security in areas like critical infrastructure, safe cities, and homeland security. Further

relevant to Fujifilm’s market potential, their series of big lenses are suited for big project needs, fitting comfortably into their surveillance requirements. According to Foo, countries of focus for Fujifilm are in areas in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, India, and Singapore. “In Thailand, technology advances are tolerated more, especially as the expansion of IP continues to progress. Thailand is a stronger adopter of new technology and a lot of our project base is from government projects, where they put more emphasis on quality,” said Foo. With Fujifilm now offering a sort of different lens specs, ranging from 1.3, 3, to 5 megapixels, their range now accommodates many different ranges of security needs. Noting the fact that Singapore is a very technologydriven country, with the adoption of Fujinon’s high-quality lenses advancing at a solid pace, Foo similarly remains optimistic about India, crediting the new government with injecting a host of new economic stimuli into the country, encompassing new products such as safe cities, city surveillance, and government-based projects. One of the strengths of Fujifilm, the opportunities have

opened for the company’s unique lenses to take hold of the markets, especially on the government side, where their large lenses cater to a host of different requirements. Further noting the fact that it is difficult for many larger companies to enter the Indian market, Foo mentioned that by targeting government projects in lieu of many commercial sectors, it has become easier for the company to take advantage of government demands in India. Alongside the well-developed IP infrastructure, adoption of their lenses have been strong, in both large lens and small lens formats. Again targeting many government projects, projections are strong for the company in the country, and is one of the prime focuses for Fujifilm. ▓ For more information, please contact: david.foo@fujifilm.com
