Market Consolidation Followed by Companies’ Reengineering 2014 has finally come to the end. When we contemplated several buzzwords, which may well describe the current global security market, we found that they are no longer “IP” or “phenomenal growth.” What is usually tied in our conversation with suppliers, distributors, and even resellers is how they have transformed to become solution providers or value-added resellers. The trend has become even more obvious and widespread compared to the past few years.

Automation and other fields relevant to electronic security.

The security industry is still more focused on the demand from project markets. However, with professional products becoming standardized and commoditized, more specialized “solutions,” not merely devices, are used and higher technical knowledge is needed in order to meet the demand for various projects. In the meantime, companies, in order to win projects, need to stand out with their product portfolios and extra values they can provide via integrated systems and extra services. This is why the global market is consolidating and companies are transforming into another higher level. Several cases can be seen in the Western security market; for example, TKH acquired Aasset Security International in 2012, which was followed by this year’s Canon Europe acquiring Milestone, and Anixter acquiring Tri-Ed. When we traveled to Asia, we also saw a reshuffle in Asian channels due to the global trend, which kicked out the companies who are not able to catch up. This issue, we especially highlighted after the reshuffling on the manufacturer’s side how the role of a distributor/reseller has also changed around the globe. The involvement in vertical markets and networks with partners is also key for companies to grow. The development of 4K video security systems and connected home systems (from a&s SMAhome), featured in this issue, will also influence the whole security industry to move on to another new level! We can foresee a brand new landscape for the security industry in a longer future, with the help of the latest technologies and solutions tailored for vertical end users.

Brazilian Fire Department Upgrades Security With VIVOTEK Cameras Bombeiros do Estado de São Paulo, a local fire department in São Paulo, Brazil, boasts a long and proud history of protecting its citizens. Recently, a comprehensive security plan was devised to enhance the overall security of the fire department. A major aspect of the plan was to upgrade the existing security system of the department to not only improve the monitoring of external areas and the main entrance, but also support stationed guards in making their virtual rounds, decrease the risk of unknown attacks, and enhance the recording of daily activity outside the department. The regional distributor Bellfone Distributor and local security systems integrator Invert Systems were commissioned for the task. VIVOTEK cameras were the immediate choice of Bellfone Distributor and Invert Systems among numerous market-available brands because of their excellent quality and reliability. Alpha-Digi, VIVOTEK’s national distributor in Brazil, played an important role in supporting both systems integrators’ equipment procurement. To satisfy the requirements of the security plan, 44 VIVOTEK cameras were installed to upscale the entire security system within the department. In order to centralize and efficiently manage video at the fire department, VIVOTEK’s professional central management software was introduced. With intuitive functions and numerous features, the 44 cameras are well managed in a hierarchical system structure, enabling the monitoring, recording, playback, and event trigger management with ease-of-use and efficient control.

FLIR Imaging Cameras Secure Diamond Mines in Namibia Day and Night In Oranjemund, situated in the far south western corner of Namibia, diamond theft is a serious concern as it is one of the richest diamond fields in the world. The workers are sometimes under pressure from criminal organizations to steal diamonds. The bedrock area is a critical area to guard when it comes to fighting against diamond thieves. Movable wireless camera systems called “spider cameras” on the bedrock mining sites were introduced for monitoring workers closely. On active bedrock sites, FLIR Systems’ thermal imaging camera has been deployed in real cases. If anyone tries to access at night to pick up diamonds, the suspects can be seen immediately on monitors. The pan/tilt function can effectively track the target to help security patrol on the way to arrest the suspects. The cameras operating on the bedrock areas are operating in harsh conditions. Close to the sea, they are susceptible to salt spray and exposed to strong winds. To customize the solution, FLIR constructed a housing. FLIR’s cameras are installed in the housing together with a camera which overlooks the bedrock during the daytime. The housing containing the two cameras is installed on a pan/tilt which increases situational awareness and allows the following of people when necessary. With real deployment in Oranjemund, thermal imaging cameras have proven their worth. Advantages of thermal imaging compared to traditional fences and cameras are clear.

Hikvision Know-how Protects New York City’s Affordable Housing Facilities Though the term affordable housing may differ from region to region, the term’s connotation and denotation often carry a negative association. Due to the challenges often associated with affordable housing, nations and the world have taken different approaches to implement their policy. Some New York City companies have taken a very different approach to improve conditions. Instead of removing tenants, security has been installed to increase both technology and quality of solution employed in these affordable housing facilities. One privately owned affordable housing facility, River Park Towers in the borough of the Bronx, New York, served as a test case for such a solution. For this project, Reliant Safety, the installer of the security system, chose a variety of Hikvision Digital Technology products to implement. Through the usage of Hikvision hardware and software, Reliant Safety has been successful in forcing out undesirable elements from River Park Towers.

Chester County Finds the Perfect System to Safeguard Cell Tower Sites ECKey announced that Chester County, Pa., U.S., has chosen ECKey access control technology to install at their cell tower sites to provide more effective protection for such critical infrastructure. The Protection Bureau, in Exton, Pa., is overseeing the planning and installation for this on-going project. In the U.S. there are over 100,000 cellphone tower sites that house expensive telecommunications and other radio technologies. Chester County has 32 cell tower sites and until recently relied on padlocks or keypads, which offered no activity log and were easily compromised. The county was experiencing copper theft, vandalism, and graffiti. They also had no way to grant access to technicians arriving at sites unannounced and no audit trail of who was coming and going. With a limited budget, network connections were out of the question. Kathy Baker from The Protection Bureau, an ECKey certified partner, presented ECKey’s cloud-based service to the county. They were impressed with the technology and The Protection Bureau’s know-how and decided to install the solution at approximately 20 of the county’s 32 cell tower sites — saving more than US$80,000 with no loss of functionality or control compared to older panel/server-based access control solutions.

São Bernardo Do Campo Leverages Verint Intelligence Solutions to Expand Verint Systems announced that São Bernardo do Campo has deployed a comprehensive security intelligence platform that includes Verint’s software, systems, and IP cameras, as part of its safe city program. The goal of the initiative was to implement comprehensive supporting technology to facilitate collaboration between the city’s municipal agencies to enhance public safety. The City of São Bernardo do Campo, located in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, is home to more than 750,000 people. Like many large urban centers, São Bernardo do Campo has a myriad of civil agencies that are responsible for helping ensure public safety and the delivery of public services, such as transportation, education, and healthcare. As such, coordination and communication between these agencies is paramount. In June 2014, the municipality deployed Verint’s comprehensive security platform to bridge together a network of more than 400 surveillance cameras, 400 panic buttons, 100 vehicles, and 20 meteorological sensors, along with numerous other sensors. This integrated platform has helped streamline operations and expedite investigations across São Bernardo do Campo, including traffic violations, civil defense, and police activities.

Arecont Vision Cameras Provide High Quality Images of Cargo for Space Station Arecont Vision is providing video surveillance cameras for SpaceX, a private company that designs, manufactures, and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft for NASA and other organizations. The high performance megapixel cameras from Arecont Vision are being deployed on the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, which is utilized by NASA to deliver supplies and science experiments to the International Space Station. The SpaceX Dragon is the first commercial spacecraft to deliver cargo to the International Space Station and safely return cargo to Earth. The innovative spacecraft includes a non-pressurized cargo area, which is referred to as the trunk, to carry large science experiments to be conducted on the space station. Once the SpaceX Dragon is berthed to the orbiting space station, the station’s arm reaches into the trunk to extract and position cargo. The space station’s robotic arm was already fitted with cameras and illuminators, but NASA required a better view of the interior of Dragon’s trunk. SpaceX turned to Arecont Vision to utilize the company’s core imaging technologies found in Arecont Vision’s megapixel surveillance cameras. For optimum integration with the spacecraft, SpaceX designed specialized housing and mounts for the cameras, and Arecont Vision custom programmed the cameras to be compatible with existing NASA systems. SpaceX plans to install Arecont Vision camera systems in upcoming Dragon spacecraft carrying cargo to the space station. A minimum of eight such missions are planned moving forward.

New, Long-distance, HD-SDI Well-prepared for the Market Editor’s Note:

Though the IP market has exponentially grown, there is still demand for analog systems, which can be seen with the recent fast-development of HD-over-coaxial solutions. As one of these solutions, HD-SDI has upgraded in long-distance transmission within 300 meters. This new generation HD-SDI has overcome previous difficulties in long-distance transmission, and more importantly, has become more cost effective. This new and long-distance HD-SDI will soon be able to compete with other HD analog solutions in the market, which still tend to keep their legacy coaxial cables. In the following, follow we feature long-distance HD-SDI chipsets, along with their cameras and DVRs.

EYENIX EN331A EX-SDI TRANSCEIVER Long Reach Solution using VLC,up to 450 m (RG59)

T Serial digital digit di gital al I/F: I/F: 2.97 2.97 Gbps, Gbps, 1.485 48 Gbps, Gb bps, 270 27 70 Mbps; Mbps Mbp Tx • Serial PHY with cable driver; Rx PHY with equalizer • Parallel I/F: BT.1120 (10/20 bit) • JPEG based codec • Visual lossless: PSNR ≥ 40dB • Fixed latency: 100 us (20 HD lines) or less • Audio ADC/DAC interface (TVL320) Supplier: Eyenix URL: www.eyenix.com

he EN331 is capable of transmitting and receiving SDI serial data. It supports 2.97 Gbps, 1.485 Gbps, and 270 Mbps with numerous user-adjustable functions such as an audio de-embedder, ancillary detector, CRC checker, and so on. It is a visually lossless codec for long-reach solutions, reducing transmission bandwidth carried on existing cables such as RG59 and UTP. It can compress images from 2.97 Gbps to 1.485 bps (50 percent) as well as from 1.48 5bps to 270 Mbps (18 percent). It guarantees high-quality video regardless of the complexity of the input image. The average PSNR is above 40 dB and the end-to-end latency is 100us or less. High-quality audio and commands can go down-stream and up-stream to the camera side. Up-stream requires an additional LPF circuit or ecologic cable driver. Thus, PTZ and bi-directional audio are easily carried out with audio analog devices. With the virtual wire function, broadly used interfaces like Pelco, UART, and SPI can be achieved retaining the current seamless user experience as if it is connected directly. It supports HDcctv 2.0 as well as virtual-4 wires.

SEMTECH GENNUM GV7700 HD-VLC TRANSMITTER

T

he GV7700 is a serial digital video transmitter for high definition (HD) component video. The GV7700 is capable of transmitting HD video at compressed 270 Mbs or an uncompressed 1.485 Gbs over 75 Ω coaxial cable, or differently over 100 Ω twisted pair cable. The GV7700 integrates the HD visually lossless codec (HD-VLC) technology, which has been developed specifically to reduce the transmission data rate of HD video over both coaxial and unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable. This is achieved by encoding the HD video, normally transmitted at a serial data rate of 1.485 Gbs, to the same rate as standard definition (SD) video, at 270 Mbs serial data rate. At 270 Mbs, the effect of cable loss is reduced, resulting in much longer cable transmission. For 75 Ω coaxial cable, cable reach can be extended up to 3x the normal reach when transmitting at 1.485 Gbs. In typical video over coaxial installations, when paired up with Semtech’s GV7704 HD-VLC receiver, cable distances of up to 400 meters are possible. * The solution will be released next year

Vanderbilt Buys Siemens

Unit to Boost Presence, Portfolio

n BY WILLIAM PAO

n October 20, Vanderbilt Industries, which offers a variety of integrated security systems and solutions, announced it has entered into an agreement to purchase Siemens Security Products (Siemens SP), a part of Siemens’ Building Technologies Division. According to Vanderbilt, the goal is to

O

expand its international presence and diversify products. With the deal, Siemens SP will be renamed Vanderbilt International and headed by Joe Grillo, Managing Director, who will work from the company’s operational headquarters in Germany. The closing of the deal is expected to occur by the end of the first quarter of

2015. While the value of Vanderbilt’s acquisition of Siemens SP was not disclosed, Grillo said the money was definitely worth the investment. “I think we’ve got a good value for the business we acquired,” he said.

GREATER INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE In Grillo’s words, the acquisition fits Vanderbilt’s core strategy of “growing electronic security systems businesses.” The Parsippany, N.J.-based Vanderbilt already has a strong presence in the North American and Asia-Pacific markets. Making inroads into the vast European market would seem the natural next step and would be achieved through the purchase of Siemens SP, whose staff and sales team are based mostly in Europe. “It gives us a greater international footprint,” Grillo said. “Size is helpful. The bigger you are, the more resources you have.” Another area of interest eyed by Vanderbilt is South America, where the company is seeking to build a stronger presence

security company that can cater to the needs of a wider range of customers. Siemens SP’s portfolio includes access control, intrusion alarm, and video surveillance products. Vanderbilt, on the other hand, is strong at access control and video management software as well as integrated solutions. CONSOLIDATION A TREND With the Siemens SP purchase, what’s next? According to Grillo, Vanderbilt currently doesn’t have any acquisition plans in the making, considering the one with Siemens SP hasn’t been completed. However, Grillo said that the company is “well-funded” and will keeping looking for deals that are in line with the firm’s strategy and overall objectives. According to Grillo, consolidation is a natural trend in the security industry, which is heavily fragmented. An October 2013 report by IHS showed that the two firms that broke the US$2 billion mark in terms of annual revenue had a combined market share of just 10 percent. The top 15 firms, meanwhile, had a combined market share of only 20 percent. “With a highly fragmented industry, you tend to see consolidation occurring,” Grillo said. In fact, Grillo said that consolidation in the industry carries various benefits, one of which is higher-quality products and services provided by companies that are more capable and competitive. “Customers can benefit from suppliers that are financially stronger to provide greater research and development efforts and technical and customer service resources,” he said. While consolidation will continue to occur, the industry will also see more and more new entrants — entrepreneurs and start-ups with new technology, fresh ideas, and less corporate bureaucracy. “There will continue to be new companies all the time, especially in the field of video, with so much change going on over the past few years,” Grillo said. “I think this industry has always had two things going on. There have always been consolidations, but at the same time, there’s always been new entrants. There is going to be a bit of both.”

Consolidation Brings Opportunities 2

014 has been quite a special year with many significant corporate acquisitions, such as Canon Europe and Milestone, Anixter and Tri-Ed, and Vanderbilt and Siemens Security Products. This year is probably not a fast-growing year but has been quite meaningful for all the industry professionals, who can give us more understanding toward the pressure over margins in the channels and new customer’s requirements for a product supplier. From reviewing the world market demand in 2014, we can clearly see how the industry and market move toward year 2015.

QUICK GLANCE AT GLOBAL MARKET DEMAND

n BY JILL LAI

40

DEC 2014

The world economy is improving slowly. The global market for security products and systems was predicted to grow 8 to 10 percent in 2014, according to current market researchers. However, in the real world, if we look at the actual revenue from multinationals covering all different product lines and geographic regions, frankly speaking, it should be around 2 to 3 percent growth, without mentioning the squeezing

margins of the small- to medium-sized companies in all different tiers of the sales channels. The security industry indeed is affected by the world economic market status. If looking into the security industry of a country, it is often strongly related to its financial status quo. An industry expert provides a quite close-to-reality statement and said, “There are some markets in the world that are financially troubled. A large part of this industry lives for big projects, projects which are funded by the states, the government, and authorities. If they already have systems that are working — old legacy systems — they are not going to finance those systems. They are not going to rip them out if it’s working when they are financially troubled. This pointed out why a financial crisis still influenced greatly the growth of some markets, such as South Europe now.

sales channels still try very hard to keep a good balance between growth and profit margin, which is the key issue that the security industry is currently facing. The industry expert continued and said, “Even though some market researcher said the market will grow by 20 or 22 percent (in the IP video surveillance) now and in the future, in reality it’s very difficult for some companies to grow by 20 to 22 percent with their desired margins. You either can grow, but you have to sacrifice your margin because you need to fight with the prices, or you will keep your margin, and you will have a lower growth rate. Very few companies will have both. According to the recent and also past reports of a&s Security 50, some leading suppliers have migrated from offering devices only into providing systems as solutions for different types of projects, in order to stay profitable and competitive in the market. Some regions like Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia really feel more pressure due to Chinese products, since they are mostly box moving markets. To keep away from the price competition, developing systems/solutions has become a major movement for most channels since IP technologies were introduced to the security industry around early 2000.

Baltazar Zuniga, General Director (CEO), TVC, Mexico VC is a professional and awarded security device wholesaler in Mexico for systems integrators, installers, and some local distributors. Being in the market for over 13 years, TVC has16 offices and branches in Mexico. Recently, the company just opened another new distribution center with a point of sales in Iztacalco, Mexico City, with almost 3,000 square meters. Baltazar Zuniga, Director of TVC, said IP adoption in the Mexican market still remains very low, and IP is used mostly in large-scale, infrastructure, and government projects. The ratio for the number of IP versus analog systems is probably around 25 percent against 75 percent. There are several factors that cause the low IP adoption in this country: Mexico is a quite price-sensitive country, and also its IP infrastructure still couldn’t be compared with other developed countries. Zuniga added, “It also explains why the latest HD-over-coaxial solutions, such as HDTVI and HDCVI, look very promising in Mexico.” Although the IP penetration is comparatively low in Mexico, TVC still has worked with several leading brands, such as VIVOTEK, for more than 10 years, and the company just recently started the partnership with Bosch. In this price-sensitive country, TVC has started to become more focused in solutions since two years ago in order to get more involved in project markets. Zuniga said there are two ways for them to offer solutions. “One is through the original

T

system/solution suppliers. For instance, VIVOTEK, Dahua, and Bosch provide solutions themselves. So, we just join them in the trainings for our channels. Otherwise, we cooperate with some suppliers to make some changes on the firmware in our device to make our products more compatible with other device. Recently, we tried developing a time-attendance system, particularly designed by ourselves through cooperation with ZKTECO. We worked with

our own engineers to develop a time-attendance system using fingerprint recognition, and the connection can be through a cloud server. When the device sends the information to the server, the management in the headquarters can see all the information from the devices. With fingerprint recognition, the employees can freely go to any offices of the company.”

Maulik Shah, CEO for Facility Security Division at Autocop India said, “We have grown by 35 percent year-on-year and expect 40 percent growth in 2015. We have shed non-performing brands and been focusing on key brands and models to drive growth next year. We are also investing on refining technical and sales team and planning to expand in tier two cities. In addition, we would add brand-specific team members and business development teams for certain verticals.” Maulik also said the company has moved from box selling concept to solution offering concept and is a valued-added distributor, offering technical end-to-end solutions, paid commissioning, and training services. He continued, “We are reaching out to key specifiers via roadshows and events and closely working on key projects that help partners win the case in their favor. ricomp International, a major distributor in Malaysia and Singapore, has embarked on a transformation journey to become a total security solutions provider since 2011. Leonard Tye Lee Yew said the company has grown its team to include solution specialists and architects that can help customers design and tackle the most stringent requirements. “We’ve also spent many hours in educating our partners (systems integrators) in the latest IP solutions and technologies,”Tye said. Introducing a partners’ program is key to a successful relation with Bricomp’s partners as this is a form of recognition to them. “Our partners’ program includes the three main elements of support to our channel partners: sales and presales, marketing, and after-sales and technical. As projects become more complex, we have also started introducing professional services to our partners. In the event a partner needs a certified engineer to help with testing and commissioning, we can offer this option to them,” he said. “We are also working with our partners to provide budgeting for customers planning to migrate to a hybrid/IP solution with the integration to electronic access control systems. The process is longer as educating the end-user about their options and the available technologies takes time. However, we find this segment very potential for real growth as systems start to age and products become obsolete and can no longer be supported/repaired,” he said.

Harsh Environments n BY WILLIAM PAO

urveillance equipment isn’t just for homes or offices. Sometimes, it is founded in some of the harshest and most unrelenting places in order to keep premises safe and secure. Whether it’s set up on a maritime oil drilling platform or somewhere in the Middle East where summer temperatures may easily hit 50 degrees Celsius, equipment must be hardened and ruggedized to be able to perform smoothly and provide maximal safety for users.

S

INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS To help users understand whether certain products are suitable for certain conditions, several international standards have been formulated to indicate how effectively they can work in environments prone to water, dust, explosions, and impact. Some of these standards are listed below.

IP IP or ingress protection ratings specify how capable equipment can withstand the

50

ingress, or entry, of foreign solids or water. An IP denotation is usually consisted of two numerals, with the first indicating the protection of equipment against solid foreign bodies and the second indicating protection against water. For critical environment equipment, it should be rated IP66 to IP68 as opposed to IP32 to IP54 for indoor settings. A similar rating system, published by National Electrical Manufacturer Association (NEMA), specifies protection of electronic equipment against external ice, corrosive materials, and oil immersion in addition to dust and water.

Hazardous Areas Hazardous locations are specified under different rating systems around the world. For critical environment equipment, it should be able to work well in areas designated as Class 1 Division 2 Group A or B in North America, or as Gas Group IIC in Europe. Both indicate places where easily flammable gases and vapors, such as hydrogen and acetylene, are present.

K has made a place for itself in the consumer market, with 4K television and displays becoming increasingly popular. Now, it is slowly making its way into the security industry. “4K video systems are not only a trend of the future, but also a ready solution going to impact this market. With the capability to cover wider areas, budget can be saved due to fewer units and installation,” said Ken Huang, Marketing Specialist at DynaColor. With the release of 4K, new solutions can be explored in several verticals to make use of the UHD resolution.

4

DEFINITIONS AND VERTICALS Boasting 4,096 x 2,160p (8.3 megapixels; around four times that of full HD resolution), 4K has the ability to display UHD video footage. In the same way 1080p was first introduced, the initial 4K applications tend to be for outdoor surveillance with a large field of view and the need to resolve detail (e.g., sport stadiums). According to Andres Vigren, Product Manager of Axis Communications, “HDTV network cameras are already used for installations where there is a requirement to overlook an area with the capability to zoom in on details with high precision. 4K UHD takes this to the next level by allowing larger areas to be monitored with a single camera without compromising on level of detail should this be required when an incident occurs.” The ability to capture a large scene and zoom in on images without sacrificing pixels makes 4K ideal for monitoring large areas, which is useful for city

surveillance and transportation. Additionally, as one 4K camera can substitute many HD cameras, it presents as a cost-effective solution while minimizing blind spots. With 4K, data collected from video recordings creates opportunities for improved investigations, but also business intelligence. For instance, personnel and customer paths are more accurately traced, and the resolution is high enough to support multiple content analyses for functions like people counting and license plate recognition (LPR), which provides more precise identification and reduced false alerts. This also allows for faster and more accurate monitoring in crowd management and perimeter protection requirements. 4K can also be applied to safe cities, wide-lane traffic monitoring, police dispatching using geographic information systems (GIS) maps, and more. “Optical zoom becomes a useful feature thanks to the 4K cameras. The quality of the camera means it can provide a stream of information, such as metadata for marketing, operations, and processes purposes,” said Gerard Figols, European Head of Product Marketing at Panasonic System Communications.

VERTICAL MARKET SECURE BANKS

Secure Banks, n BY ISRAEL GOGOL, FREELANCER

anks hold the great responsibility of keeping our money safe. Even though most of this money is now in the form of electronic bits and bytes, banks are still one of the first associations when we think of security and surveillance systems. Banks usually balance the mix of their security systems between discrete and unobtrusive systems such as emergency buttons and small hidden cameras (e.g., at the counter area or an ATM pinhole camera) and more visible measures such as guards and larger cameras. The visible security systems serve a double purpose, both deterring potential violators as well as giving customers a feeling the bank is indeed a safe place to keep their money. Surveillance systems installed in banks will usually combine several cameras with different functionality. Outside the bank infrared cameras will provide day

and night monitoring. Inside the branch, dome and bullet cameras are used for lobby and counter monitoring for clear picture capturing and forensic evidence. The main purpose of these cameras is to prevent illegal intrusion by unauthorized people as well as monitoring the office environment to prevent property loss.

CHALLENGES OF THE BANKING VERTICAL A major obstacle facing security companies and systems integrators is aligning the security needs of individual branch locations with the requirements outlined by the corporate headquarters. “Securing the bank branches themselves is different from securing a corporate headquarters or data center location, as branches are more often the targets for criminals since it’s assumed that’s where the money is located,” explained

Matt Frowert, Director of Marketing for Financial Services at Tyco Integrated Security. Therefore, the standard level of security and defense are more in-depth at a branch than for a corporate office. Many times legacy systems, or different versions of the same platform, may be found in different regional branches of the same institution within a country, which makes centralized management difficult. In addition, there may be internal resistance to changes or upgrades that the corporate standards demand due to funding constraints, or the local staff being inexperienced and lacking training regarding proper security measures and systems. Another challenge may simply be a matter of timing and scheduling; implementing major technology upgrades across very large financial institutions with many branches and offices.

, Now and Future

NEW BANK LAYOUTS In recent years banks have been changing their traditional set-up to be more appealing to customers. There are more “light” branches located inside shopping malls and supermarkets. Traditional branch layout and design have also changed and now include more open floor plans and fewer staff which are tasked with broader responsibilities. “More in-branch automation and systems found in these new types of banks very likely means that they may not have the same levels of cash that traditional branches have,” added Frowert. “During a robbery attempt, the suspect may be confused when he discovers there is limited teller cash and no safe like there would be in a traditional bank set-up. These new frameworks for bank branches will affect the security of the customers themselves and the

bank’s security model for protection,” he explained. As a result, emphasis is placed on new systems that offer increased ATM protection through anti-skimming technology, access control, and proper lighting measures for ATM vestibules to help ensure customers are properly protected.

BENEFITS OF INTEGRATED SYSTEMS FOR BANKS Like any other enterprise, banks require their systems provide security, safety, efficiency, and cost saving. “Normally, powerful VMS software can integrate four systems, such as video monitors, access control, alarm systems, and the intercom system, which are used to communicate with bank clients at other locations, for example using an ATM at a different site,” said Nathan Chen,

Solution and Product Manager at Dahua Technology. In turn, each system includes several components: alarm systems for example will include fire alarms, seismic sensors to detect if someone is digging into the bank, and emergency buttons. Access control systems will combine card readers, biometrics, magnetic door sensors, etc. This provides banks with an integrated solution instead of four stand-alone systems. In addition, sensors such as smoke detectors or temperature sensors are now built in the cameras and can send alarms directly to the DVR system. This way the bank can benefit from having several sensors on one platform and cut costs. Systems integration is also critical for protection against insider threats by employees which can be very costly. “An increasingly popular step in mitigating insider threats through an integrated www.asmag.com

he origins of video content analysis (VCA) for perimeter defense are in video motion detection (VMD) technology that has been present since the early 2000s. In the beginning, VMD was only used to detect motion. Later, advancements allowed systems to estimate and differentiate size, color, speed, and direction. The common use of VCA is for preliminary warning of possible suspicious events. “A physical perimeter is preferred as a first form of defense and as a visible deterrence to intruders,” said Pieter van de Looveren, Global Marketing Communication Manager for Video Systems at Bosch Security Systems. “VCA supports perimeter security as an extra set of eyes supporting security personnel in

most common use of VCA in South Africa is as a secondary layer of protection, to allow early detection of a threat before it reaches the boundary, thus creating extra reaction time. This is critical for our installations which usually have a perimeter several kilometers long, such as power stations, big housing estates, mines, and golfing communities.

the control room by alerting them when needed and helping them quickly retrieve the correct evidence when something happened. In other words, video analysis analyzes real-time images continuously to instantly detect suspicious events and alert operators when needed. “The basic premise of analytics along a perimeter is intrusion detection, said Matt Bretoi, VP for North America Field Sales at FLIR Systems. “Many VCA solutions provide an extra level of intelligence, such as object classification, which significantly cuts down on false alarms especially when paired with thermal imagers. This is a critical factor for most end users. Another key benefit is the integral capability to visually assess and verify the alarm. Lastly, an analytics solution is not dependent

on fencing and even provides detection well beyond, or inside the perimeter if designed correctly, he added. In addition, VCA also has an added value of not only complementing the physical barrier but also the abilities of the operators. It helps maintain situational awareness, an important feature that might be lacking in case there are low-level operators guarding the site or a high turnover rate of operators. It also helps keep the operators focused. “The same way we can’t watch several football matches at the same time and keep track, it is also impossible for an operator to focus all the time on all the different screens, explained Nicholas Grange, Technical Director for South Africa-based C3 Shared Services. “The

The outdoor environment poses many challenges to VCA solutions. Meteorological challenges such as moving clouds, shadows, rain, snow, and lightning, as well as environmental challenges — lay of land, lights from passing cars, neighboring facilities, and fauna and flora — all generate many false alarms. “In some verticals, for example in jails, a reasonable rate of false alarms are not a major concern, as guards can afford to check every alarm whether true or false. However, in other installations, where end users are more sensitive to false alarms, a high false alarm rate may force the users to lower the alarm threshold, compromise sensitivity, and maybe even miss intrusions, explained Hagai Katz, Senior VP of Marketing and Business Development at Magal Security Systems. Two factors that greatly increase the success of perimeter VCA are proper illumination and sterile areas near the perimeter. However, these measures are not always www.asmag.com

We are coming close to the year end. SMAhome has compiled several top smart home industry news for 2014 and we are presenting them in 7 different scenarios to watch closely for in 2015. Every year the International CES show unveils what is trendy in the consumer electronics world. While we are looking forward to the 2015 edition, this year’s show has given a noticeable scenario, the fading of “home automation” as a buzzword. The term – “connected home” became dominant. The connected home or smart home is believed to be the next big boom for industries in the next decade. Over the next five years, the growth rate of connected-home device shipments is forecast to be much faster than that of smartphone or tablet devices with a compound annual growth rate of 67% from 2014 to 2019, according to BI Intelligence. The research institute estimates the global connected-home device sales will drive over $61 billion in revenue this year, and the number is predicted to climb to $490 billion in 2019. Connected-home devices include all smart appliances, safety and security systems (internet-connected sensors, monitors, cameras, and alarm systems), and energy equipment like smart thermostats and smart lighting. Home-energy equipment and safety and security systems, including devices like connected thermostats and smoke detectors, will become popular first, leading the way to a broader consumer adoption. One key element of connected home is the cloud-based solution, which leads to the first scenario to watch in the 2015 smart home industry.

MIT BRIGHTENS THE SMART HOME

Made-in-Taiwan has long been synonymous with high quality. Following Taiwan’s success in the IT industry, local smart home makers are again venturing out to a whole new ballgame, determined to reinvent a new spectrum of quality that is MIT. The global smart home has really hit its stride. Even the big boys – Google, Apple and Samsung – are all head over heels looking to make a statement. According to a study released by Juniper Research, the smart home market will reach a staggering US$71 billion by 2018. So who are amongst the drivers behind the move toward mass adoption? For one, Taiwan makers are very much onboard the smart home bandwagon, providing new features and solutions that help push the industry into the next generation as our homes become the hub for smarter living. The smart home arena in Taiwan is a colorful representation of those in the know. It can generally be summed up by three types of players. First, there are those that are already IT and networking experts in their respective fields, providing gateways, home cameras and cloud services for telcos, MSOs, retailers, SIs, and IT distributors respectively. Companies falling into this category include D-Link, Gemtek, Advantech, Sercomm, AlphaNetworks, Chicony, Liteon, and JSW, just to name a few. Secondly, there are those carried over from the traditional security sector. Companies like BarvoTech,

“Taiwan's advantage is in customized projects because our hardware and software are already in place.” Kevin Wu, CEO, Amegia

“In terms of the scale of the smart home market in China, the quantity is there. But it lacks variety because everyone is churning out similar hardware specs.” Y.K. Chen, Director of New Business Development, Climax Technology

Lilin, StarVedia, Amegia, Vivotek, ACTeck, GKB, AMTK and Pixord are some examples of those who offered home cameras, NAS, or home NVRs for security distributors, alarm monitoring companies and SIs. Due to their earlier presence, these companies are well positioned globally by name and expertise in the security arena. On further note, Unitech, Climax, Everspring, Amroad and Touchlife are some of the veterans in the intercom and antitheft fields who have since been making PIR sensors, wireless alarm kits, video door phones, control panels and HA solutions for security distributors/SIs, alarm monitoring companies, or home automation SIs. These experts are all vying for smart home solutions through enhanced user experiences.

CUSTOMIZATION PROWESS

User experience is about the aspect of how people use an interactive product - easy installation and ease of use.

Over the years, the island has carved out a distinctive niche as the world’s pre-eminent high-tech manufacturing hub. But due to price competition from neighboring countries and other underlying factors, manufacturing hardware alone can no longer sustain its competitive edge. But thanks to these experiences coupled with Taiwan’s design talents, Taiwan smart home makers are known for their ability to conduct OEM/ODM on customized projects. Taiwan makers are well-positioned to tackle the flourishing smart home market, since they can utilize their technology and manufacturing capability to reinvent everyday household
