Smart home solutions require customized setups, and industrial computing company NEXCOM believes its expertise is a good match to this market demand. The Internet of Things can be a natural extension of Industrial computing applications. 10 mySMAhome.com 2017
Clement Lin, CEO NEXCOM
Founded in 1992, NEXCOM International Co. initially specializes in industrial computing, which the company has utilized to extend services in a variety of areas, including Internet of Things (IoT), automation solutions and intelligent platform & services. Asked how NEXCOM entered the field of the IoT in the first place, company Chairman & CEO Clement Lin began his reply by saying “IoT is like a gift to us from God.” The IoT and the industrial PC have many things in common. They are project-based, vertical and customized type of solutions. The industrial PC can be considered a gateway, linking to the cloud and endpoints. As such, “the IoT is a natural extension of the industrial PC.” There are many challenges, however. It takes as long as one year to “cook” an IoT or industrial computing solution. Customer approval can take half a year, before mass production can kick off, the process of which could take another two years. The long development process is a signature characteristic of the industrial PC or the IoT industries.
Components in the iot system Asked what IoT products or services NEXCOM are offering, Lin said the company will start with Industry 4.0 related services. There will be “sensor stations” which automate processes before they ultimately turn into robots. All the work stations, along with all the varied sensors – for temperature, humidity, air quality monitoring, etc. – need to be connected to the Internet. Connected altogether, the devices will form an IoT network. The IoT network is an essential element in the implementation of Industry 4.0. But there are more. Among

them is what NEXCOM calls a War Room, which acts like a central control center that performs real-time plant operation, data monitoring, equipment status checking, and even scenario forecast. Decisions and follow-on actions can be made quickly based on the situation on the floor. There is also the IT and the Private Cloud components. While the former acts as an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, the latter parks all the data and applications from the IT layer and OT layer. Since the ERP system is so critical to a company’s operation, and due to its comprehensive business process coverage, some companies have outsourced their IoT implementation to their ERP providers such as SAP and Oracle. However, as ERP firms specialize in software development, they may lack the know-how in IoT related hardware deployment. This is why some ERP firms have turned to NEXCOM for assistance, Lin noted. Managing all the various types of sensors is a difficult task, and NEXCOM has the needed knowledge to launch them on the floor. Companies have also turned to their cloud providers like Amazon Web Services, which control all the big data, for their IoT deployment. Since the big data gathered by cloud providers comes from sensors on the floor, NEXCOM also has the edge in this aspect. The company is therefore sought after by cloud providers too.
neXCom iot studio as the de FaCto standard Lin pointed out a main challenge in IoT development that is also agreed by many players in the industry – myriads of existing cloud and sensor protocols. Moving up from the gateway in the middle, there are around 10 protocols for the cloud. Moving down from the gateway, there are also hundreds of communication protocols for the hardware. “This is like mission impossible,” Lin said. Considering all the different protocols, gateway setup will take tremendous amount of time even for most experienced engineers. To meet this challenge, NEXCOM has rolled out the IoT Studio solution, which integrates the main protocols used for the cloud and endpoints. It saves engineers much
IoT solutions need customization. It’s about “vertical application” and “system integration.” development work, and in Lin’s words, allows companies to easily “ride on the cloud and things.” The solution is so easy to use that it almost lets users just “plug and play.” Even operators can do the setup, freeing professional engineers to do the more valuable development tasks. Many IoT applications have been quickly launched already using the solution, according to Lin. Another challenge is the lack of standard platforms, which, according to Lin’s definition, consists of a CPU plus an OS. Take Intel for example, despite its business size, the company is still considered a small player in the IoT industry. Only when a standard platform is established can all upstream and downstream supply chains, and related software and hardware ecosystems be solidified, the chairman said. The IoT has no standard, and NEXCOM’s IoT Studio aims to solve this problem by integrating well-known systems like Intel and Raspberry Pi as well as major protocols like Modbus, ZigBee, Bluetooth, and more. This enables faster learning and quick deployments by students and start-up entrepreneurs alike. By integrating more and more protocols over time, hopefully IoT Studio can become the “de facto standard,” Lin added.
smart home, part oF the iot Chain Asked about the smart home development, Lin said the new industry is certainly part of the IoT chain. Possible applications include senior home care, real-time smart metering and utility management. To meet hospital demand, NEXCOM recently rolled out a 4-in-1 sensor which can monitor humidity, temperature, carbon dioxide levels in addition to medical care functionality. The demand for smart home application is massive, Lin said, adding that Google did not purchase Nest without a reason. Nevertheless, it seems that the investment has not born fruits, and this is also true for other firms venturing in the smart home industry, which has met a bottleneck, according to Lin. Product costs cannot be lowered until they become commodities, or are created through mass production, Lin said, adding that customization is very expensive – three, five or even ten times more costly. It appears that NEXCOM holds the edge. It makes tailormade industrial computers and specializes in customization. IoT solutions need customization. It’s about “vertical application” and “system integration” which is very complex, Lin said.
About NEXCOM
Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan, NEXCOM specializes in industrial computing which the company has utilized to extend services in a variety of areas. The company has six global businesses: IoT Automation Solutions, Intelligent Digital Security, Internet of Things, Intelligent Platform & Services, Mobile Computing Solutions, and Network and Communication Solutions. The service-to-market business model enables NEXCOM to build a global service network by offering customized service, global logistics, local access and real-time support.
To make it work, costly investment and customer service are required. Smart home in this regard, despites its B2C nature, has B2B characteristics, Lin noted. Smart home products will be expensive no matter how good they are. Their attractiveness level to consumers is therefore constrained. Lin believes that in the future, smart home will be implemented by average users more easily via turnkey solutions. Parameter setting is all that users have to do. Programming is not for everyday users. This is the job of enterprises that have plenty of resources. “This is not the task for housewives,” Lin said. Lin said “household weather station” is a possible smart home application. Data collected from every home can congregate to form a “community weather map” that tells atmospheric pressure, air quality, precipitation, etc. Lin also predicts that household service robots will be indispensable in the foreseeable future. The embedded systemon-chips will function like super computers. Technological evolution is what makes it possible. The robot will serve like a personal secretary that provides answers to user queries. The robot acquires new knowledge instantly after each app download. For example, apps that store human body knowledge can turn robots into experts in the subject. 886-2-8226-7786 nicoletseng@nexcom.com.tw http://www.nexcom.com.tw

Manufacturers Remain Confident in Apple’s Ability to Lead the Smart Home Industry When talking about the futuristic smart home industry, one is unlikely to leave out Apple Inc., the big name that really made the first smart device - that is smartphone - user friendly and appealing to the general public.
Nowadays as iOS and Android devices alike become more universal, many have begun to ponder the potential of broader smart technology applications. The name of the game is called big data, the Internet of Things (IoT) or smart home. Despite Apple’s market leader position in the smartphone sector, it has yet to cement 14 mySMAhome.com 2017
a similar role in the IoT or smart home industry. Apple, Google and Amazon have all introduced smart home platforms which hardware manufacturers comply to when creating their own products. Due to Apple’s stringent requirement, there have been relatively few products compatible
to its HomeKit platform. Google and Amazon, which opt for establishing a more open development environment for manufacturers, appear to have gotten the upper hand in the smart home venture. Just a few weeks ago, Amazon announced a new milestone, that is, 10,000 skills working with its

Alexa platform were created by thirdparty developers. Which is a testimony of the broad range of devices and appliances compatible with Alexa. The market has seen much fewer products compatible with Apple HomeKit. However, despite the slow development, manufacturers working with Apple still
plan to launch new HomeKit products in 2017, according to a study conducted by SMAhome. CviLux Group, a Taiwan-based original design manufacturer/original equipment manufacturer that makes HomeKit parts, components and finished products, said it plans to launch a new power outlet in March and a new light bulb in April under the Opro brand name. CviLux ‘sOpro iU9 Smart Power Outlet is already listed in Apple’s official webpage of HomeKit accessories. The device lets users control, monitor and schedule lights and appliances remotely and with voice. Home electronics and appliances can be scheduled to turn on or off automatically based on users’ preferred routines. US-based semiconductor company Silicon Labs, which focuses on developing IoT solutions, also said it expects at least two HomeKit software releases during 2017. Silicon Labs’ primary HomeKit products are Blue Gecko Bluetooth SoCs, wireless modules and Bluetooth software. These products help developers create
home accessories such as smart locks, thermostats and weather stations. Shenzhen Opso Technology Co., a China-based startup with Apple’s MFi certification, said in a recent interview that it will launch sensor or security products like cameras, doorbells and alarms in 2017. The company’s OPSO Smart Outlet HK-OU1, an Apple certified HomeKit accessory, supports home management like switch scheduling, power use monitoring and Siri voice control. The outlet has multiple use case setting to meet the demand from different users.
Apple’s strict technicAl requirement China-based lighting solution and IoT manufacturer Leedarson also indicated intention to launch lighting products compatible with HomeKit later this year. Leedarson also develops smart products based on platforms other than Apple’s HomeKit. Products that are compatible with Amazon’s Alexa are still more 2017 mySMAhome.com 15

popular among distributors, Leedarson’s Product Manager Justin Zhang said. “Changes have been made by Apple to facilitate product development, for example, by hastening the verification process. The long verification process is actually a challenge in developing HomeKit products,” Zhang said. Jerry Chen, CEO of Dexatek Technology Ltd., a Taiwan-based company that s p e c i a l i z e s i n H o m e K i t p ro d u c t development, offers a clear explanation to the level of difficulty. Apple changes its specifications constantly and to ensure quality, its people actually pay visits to check on manufacturing plants. Apple’s verification processes span from hardware, software to app development, Chen pointed out. Amazon and Google have less complex verification procedures. Alexa developers may simply use an API and passing the verification is much easier. Opso’s General Manager Wang Yifu said Apple employs a stricter standard, which increases the difficulty to develop new products. Taking the Opso smart plug for example, while connecting to Wi-Fi is easy, meeting all the technical requirement specified by Apple is difficult. Testing has to be conducted in-house before the product can be sent to Apple for testing, Wang said.
Apple provides interoperAbility Despite the high technical requirement dictated by Apple, many of its manufacture partners still have very nice thing to say about the company while expressing confidence in Apple’s potential in the smart home venture. Mikko Savolainen, Senior Marketing Manager of Silicon Labs, says the biggest challenge in making smart home products is the complexity of ecosystems in this industry. Smart home accessory vendors need to think about building accessories, smart phone applications, gateways and possibly also cloud applications and then make all of them interoperable and secure. 16 mySMAhome.com 2017
A main challenge in making HomeKit product is that manufacturers must pass a thorough MFi/HomeKit testing process. Companies have to be familiar with HomeKit requirements if they want to carry out product R&D in the upstream supply chain.” • Sam Hsiao, Special Assistant to Cvilux CEO
Changes have been made by Apple to facilitate product development, for example, by hastening the verification process. The long verification process is actually a challenge in developing HomeKit products,” • Justin Zhang, Product Manager of Leedarson Lighting
“Apple has actually solved many of these challenges, and they provide end users with iPhones, iPads, Apple Home iOS applications and Siri voice control to interact with the accessories. Apple also allows iPads and Apple TVs to be used as gateways to connect the accessories securely to Apple iCloud,” Savolainen said.
strength in hArdwAre quAlity Opso’s Wang says Apple’s competency lies in hardware development, which Google and Amazon may not be very good at. “The MFi verification mechanism has created a robust and comprehensive hardware supply chain. In fact, Apple establishes stable and long-term cooperative relation with its manufacturer partners,” Wang said. Th is why some believe Apple is more prepared and has better chance of making it in the smart home industry. Amazon's partnership with manufacturers, on the other hand, is more like one-time co-operative relationship, Wang said, adding that “iOS also has better security standard, which is critical in smart home implementation.”
Asked about Apple's competition with Amazon and Google, Dexatek Technology’s Chen said, “I still believe HomeKit is better at this stage. Although development is more difficult, it provides a unified user experience, and the installation is unified. It offers better security.” Other platforms do not necessarily provide this kind of uniformity, Chen said. Take Alexa for example, there are many compatible products, but “their ease of use is uncertain,” Chen said. Also, Apple offers a high level of platform and brand interoperability. A HomeKit-compatible plug will connect with a HomeKit-compatible light without problems. In addition, Apple's standard HOME app provides even better user experience now and more unified brand interoperability. Brand loyalty among Apple fans also gives the company more clout, Chen said. “We believe when Apple starts to take the lead, the smart home sector will have a better chance to take off, bringing non-Apple platforms like Alexa onto the bandwagon.”

Product Developers Set Trends for the Smart Home Industry By Michelle Chu
Over the past few years, we have seen a continuing rising investment in home automation and connected home business from professional suppliers worldwide. This phenomenon is not only driven by the desire to create more market share and revenue but also the enormous business potential hidden in the IoT and smart device market. It is forecast that the smart home market will be growing from USD 46.97 Billion in 2015 to USD 121.73 Billion by 2022, at a CAGR of 14.07%, according to a recent report released by MarketsandMarkets. At the early stage of smart home development, 20 mySMAhome.com 2017
product developers play an important role in the business. They are responsible for developing new products and improving the existing ones so that the company can meet end users’ needs more effectively. As the smart home market remains highly fragmented and diversified, developing the sound and effective solutions that cure users’ pain point is a challenge. Thanks to the nature of IoT and connected devices, product developers may now closely collaborate with other technical and manufacturing specialists from different industries throughout the product development process, building up more integrated solutions promptly. A product developer, also known as an industrial designer, is capable of combining design, business and engineering know-hows to create products that meet both market and production requirements. So what exactly are the product developers going after in the uprising smart home market?
In order to stay ahead of the competitive industry and keep up with the ever-changing market trend, professional players often find it vital to go further beyond their business comfort zone.

functions and applications is a must — be it embedded chipset, platform systems or any ingenious innovations that will immediately differentiate the whole system or solution from the peer. Voice control can perhaps be the perfect example here. The command method, typified by Amazon Echo, has swiftly stood out and become a new category for smart home devices since its release in 2016. According to ABI Research, voice control will represent almost 30% of smart home device spending by 2021. In light of the market trends, product developers finds it necessary to integrate and extend voice control throughout the home automation systems. “Over the next five years, a wide range of home devices and appliance vendors, as well as the installer and managed smart home system providers, will have to address how to partner to integrate with voice control platforms,” commented Jonathan Collins, Research Director at ABI Research. IHS Markit projects that the penetration smart home systems will reach three percent of global households by 2018 and seven percent by 2025. When 2023 arrives, IHS predicts that professionally monitored smart homes will exceed nonconnected, traditionally monitored security systems. However, for smart home technology to continue on its current growth track, service providers need to adopt flexible billing methods, such as on-demand/nocontract models, according to Blake Kozak, principal analyst for smart home and security technology at IHS Markit. “Staying innovative will be crucial for service

providers as the future of the smart home will have less focus on safety and security devices and more attention paid to automation, user experience and ecosystems, said Kozak. Therefore, installers and solution designers within the system integration companies have set their eyes on technical expansion and migration. Despite they are all experienced and capable of providing integrated systems and solutions, to emerge from the competitive market, it is inevitable to be able to provide even more advanced services and solutions. Usually, it only takes a set of exceptionally designed platform or product system to bring out unparalleled added values from original solutions and services. Suppliers with unrivaled techniques in systems and platforms design are therefore the ideal business

making The smarT sourcing decisions While user experience plays the key role in expanding the adoption of smart home and IoT technology, business tactics like engaging the end user with problem-solving technology (hook product) at the start, and making it simple to add additional devices (a large ecosystem of potential devices), with no doubts, is the most important for long-term success. To the service providers, it doesn’t matter that the end-to-end ecosystem is built up in-house or outsourced with reliance on third-party integrations — it practically makes no difference for providing exceptional smart home solutions and services, as long as the devices are thoroughly vetted with the platform. StatS & FigureS
China and the US to BeCome LargeSt Smart home marketS: ovUm Analytics and consulting firm Ovum has published a new report, predicting that China and the U.S. will be the largest smart home markets, and that smart device sales will reach over 1.4 billion units by 2021. From 224 million units in 2016 to 1.4 billion in 2021, the rise will be driven mostly by sales in security and utilities devices, such as cameras, door locks, smart thermostats and smart light bulbs, Ovum says. The U.S. and China are named for
the largest smart home markets due to high product availability and consumer interest. The rest of East Asia and Southeast Asia will also exert significant impact on the market. Ovum’s 2021 smart home household penetration map shows that the U.S. takes the lead (69%) in adoption, followed by Canada (54%), South Korea (48%), Japan (41%) and the UK (40%). The report puts smart home devices into five categories: utilities, appliances, security, interactive audio speakers and others.
Professionally Monitored Smart Homes to Outnumber Traditional Security Systems: IHS Markit There’s no denying the advent of smart home technology has forever changed the landscape of the residential security industry. Now, according to a new report from IHS Markit, it seems that smart home systems stand poised to supplant the traditional burglar and fire alarm panels of old. The research firm projects that the penetration of smart home systems will reach three percent of global households by 2018 and seven percent by 2025. When 2023 arrives, IHS predicts that professionally monitored smart homes will exceed non-connected, traditionally monitored security systems. According to Blake Kozak, principal analyst for smart home and security technology at IHS
32 mySMAhome.com 2017
Markit, for smart home technology to continue on its current growth track, service providers will need to adopt flexible billing methods, such as on-demand/no-contract models. “Consumers are beginning to expect alternatives to long-term contracts in the form of on-demand billing, professional installation with self-monitoring or DIY installation with professional monitoring,” Kozak wrote in a research note.
IoT Spending in Central and Eastern Europe to Reach US$24 Billion in 4 years: IDC As organizations furthers their investment in IoT across hardware, software, services and connectivity, spending on the IoT reached US$11 billion in Central and Eastern Europe in 2016. According to IDC, the spending will boom through 2020. The research firm predicts IoT related revenues in Central and Eastern Europe will see a 21.5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2016 and 2020, topping at US$24 billion. In 2016, the transportation sector led the IoT investment with US$2.3 billion in spending, followed by the manufacturing sector with US$2.1 billion in spending and the utility sector with US$1.2 billion. IDC forecast consumer segment will take the lead to become the top IoT spender in the next five years. Insurance, construction (smart buildings), transportation, connected cars and cross-industry IoT investments are expected to get the most IoT use cases. Investment in smart homes by consumers will also increase, surpassing the US$1.1 billion mark by 2020, the research firm says.
Europe’s Demand for Smart Meters to Grow in the Foreseeable Future An estimated 700 million smart meters were installed worldwide by the end of 2016. Of these, half of them are in China. But in Europe, new EU standards are driving massive adoption. The European Commission aims to replace at least 80% of electricity meters with smart meters by 2020 wherever it is costeffective to do so. This would translate into 200 million smart meters. The uptake of smart metering is partly due to the continued requirements for reducing environmental pollution, and partly because utility companies want additional flexibility to better manage their energy resources to ensure a fluid and sustained delivery to all users simultaneously. Also, with the increased adoption of renewable energy such as solar or wind energy, many households have become energy producers over the past few years instead of being consumers only. The European Commission published a proposal stating that all consumers should be entitled to request a smart meter from their supplier.
Consumers Still Wary about Smart Home Services: Gartner While manufacturers perceive smart home as a rising market with potential, average consumers don’t feel the same way. Research firm Gartner has found only 10% of households in Australia, the U.S. and the U.K. currently have connected home solutions. The research firm surveyed 10,000 people in the second half of 2016. Most respondents said that they don’t feel like having what smart homes can offer. Consumer Internet of Things (IoT) is at the earlyadoption stage, Gartner concluded. Consumers have various hurdles adopting smart home devices, the survey found. For example, almost two-thirds of the respondents worry about IoT devices listening to their conversation and invading their privacy. Almost 75% of the respondents feel that setting the lights and thermostats by hand is as easy as using IoT or voice commands. Meanwhile, only 25% said they were attracted to the idea of having devices that anticipate their needs and make automatic adjustments.

End-users will not get confused while using the products if the devices can support different standards. Coco Chen, the senior manager in Strategy Marketing at Leedarson By Elvina Yang
Leedarson: Smart Home Products to Support Multiple Wireless Protocols for End-Users’ Convenience One example for the later is Leedarson, a Chinese ODM company for LED lighting that entered the IoT fields with smart lighting products. The company has also extended its businesses into home security and smart commercial space solutions. Founded in 2000, Leedarson has established itself as a top exporter of LED lighting OEM/ODM company. It has customers in 81 countries worldwide and 95% of its products goes to private-label companies in the U.S., Europe and Southeast Asia, including GE Lighting, Belkin, IKEA and LG. Seeing market potential early in the IoT industry, the Xiamen-based company invested in the area and launched smart lighting systems in 2010. In the following years, it expanded its product portfolio into multiprotocol gateways, controllers, smart plugs and various sensors, from temperature, humidity to motion. In 2017, for instance, the company plans to produce multi-functional

sensors and security cameras used in home automation, home security and small commercial space design solutions. “The all-in-one sensor combines the detecting technologies of humidity, temperature, motion and intrusion,” Coco Chen, the senior manager in Strategy Marketing at Leedarson explained. The camera product will come with cloud service as a whole system, according to Chen. Chen gives an example that when someone rings the doorbell, the Leedarson security camera will detect motions with its built-in sensor, activate the system in the cloud, and the system will combine images ten seconds before the motion and send the clip to the user, Chen said.
Shifting for Clients
From smart lighting to smart home security, the company has shifted the market mainly for its clients. One of the clients Leedarson caters to is service providers, such AT&T, which become the smart home solution providers to the end-users for their established close relations. End-users buy their first smart home products to mainly take care home security, the company surveyed. That’s why home security has become one of its focus. Moreover, end-user’s user experience drives how Leedarson designs its products. The company has joined various wireless connectivity standard alliances, such as Zigbee, to design products which supports multiple standards. “End-users will not get confused while using the products if the devices can support different standards,” said Chen.
Abundant R&D Resources In the coming year, Leedarson will also start to integrate voice-control platforms, including Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Home, since more and more of its clients start to ask for this technology. Currently, the company owns a team over 200 R&D engineers in its headquarter and a team of 50 in Shenzhen. It plans to establish a new team of engineers in Shanghai and another one in Taipei, Taiwan, focusing on voice-control technology this year. “We see the smart home market performance in 2017 to grow several times compared to 2016,” said Chen. Not only the technology and engineering talents, Leedarson sees itself to grow fast in the rising smart home market for its established relationships with distributors and business partners as a LED lighting solution provider. The company has also deployed the six sigma system into its production lines, making its products more reliable. Leedarson’s currently has a broad product portfolio “because we position ourselves as a professional IoT ODM company for our clients,” said Chen.

While a user’s problems or demands can be complicated, our smart home solution can not, Shelley Wu, general manager of TASHI Smartech Co., Ltd. By Jason Yi
TASHI Simplifies Complex Smart Lives with Elfin Lite We live in a complex society in which the life styles go in many different directions and are related to various technology solutions and possibilities. The smart lives can be one of the complex solutions that are hard to choose and understand. “While a user’s problems or demands can be complicated, our smart home solution can not,” said Shelley Wu, general manager of TASHI Smartech Co., Ltd. “High cost of total ownership, complicated installations and system settings are some of the obvious reasons that hinder the mass adaption of smart home solutions,” commented Wu. "Easy installation is the first step for home security products nowadays." TASHI Smartech launches the Lite version of its popular Elfin home solution in 2017. Unlike the complete Elfin solution requiring the combination of door phone intercom and indoor multifunction controller with a flat panel to deliver the full functionality, Elfin Lite consists of only the APP, a smart gateway and the door phone intercom. “By using smart phones or general TV/IP TV sets, that most people have nowadays, Elfin Lite is a smart gateway solution that enables users to control and connect their home devices. For example, you can use the existing home TV to view the visitors, archive voice messages, receive system notifications, view camera footages and even achieve e-Home control.” "The Zigbee (or Z-Wave) wireless communication and only one APP – MoboBell Lite is to overcome the complicated installation process that traditional home automation systems require," cited Wu. Elfin Lite uses

Zigbee or Z-Wave to connect lightings, switches, smart plugs, sensors, electronic curtains and is able to remote control the air conditioner via an IR module. TASHI Smartech is an affiliate company of Unitech Electronics Co., Ltd, who is a global provider of AIDC (automatic identification and data capture) technologies with over-30-year experience. “Unitech’s customers are throughout various industries, including logistics, healthcare, retails, warehousing, manufacturing, transportation, field services, and the residential business such as housing and construction companies ” said Wu.
‘Soft’ Prowess
In 2008, deriving from Unitech’s specialties in RFID and IP based device expertise, Elfin was launched to cater the residential and enterprise sectors’ demands for integrated intelligent solutions. Further to that, “Elfin Lite is introduced in 2017 to meet the trends of on-demand business models in smart home markets. Users want professional installation with self-monitoring products now,” explained Wu. According to Wu, the company has turned its development focus on the software design. While consistently working with worldwide system integrators and home builders, the R&D teams in the United States and China are two of their solid engineering powers to maintain TASHI’s capabilities in the up-to-date IoT market. Geographically, Wu revealed that Southeast Asia markets will be their primary target in 2017 after a successful model built in the company’s mother country, Taiwan; and the company is working with an Indonesian system integrator to design a home automation and security solution for a complex dwell project of more than 3700 housings; in the meanwhile, a project in Malaysia of 700 housing units is also ongoing.
Better Service and Integration “One of our after-sales services includes a platform called SMC, System Management Counsel. It can monitor status of all online devices; remotely update software in need as well as confirm each user's home system in healthy condition, so that system integrators reduce the cost of maintenance and management.” “Beyond security and safety, the integration with home care features is something that ensures Elfin Lite to differentiate itself in the market. Leveraging our experience in smart medical solution of Unitech Group, Elfin Lite connects with sphygmomanometers and blood glucose meter via Bluetooth to provide tele-care service possibilities for private home care and service providers.” Wu said TASHI products aim on innovative applications such as smart living, energy saving, tele-care and so forth.

Voice control will also be a trend in smart home,” shared Shiu. He revealed that Gunitech has been integrating Amazon Alexa into their new launch in 2017. Ray Shiu, Associate General President of Gunitech By Jason Yi
Gunitech Integrates Bluetooth Mesh and Beacon Technologies into Smart Home Beacon is a technology based on Bluetooth to track a person’s movements and activities. Beacon nowadays is embedded in the wearable devices commonly to track user’s movement and send notifications via Bluetooth channel. While many home safety products are available in the market, Beacon makes a step forward to achieve the early alert and notification via its indoor positioning technology. “The combination of Beacon and Bluetooth mesh can provide the movement and behavior tracking for any abnormality observation at home. As the part of homecare solutions, it is the detector of the elderly falling down,” illustrated Ray Shiu, the associate general president of Gunitech. According to Shiu, traditional home security products such as smoke

and carbon monoxide detectors is the market of system integration. “At the moment, to most of end users, installing smoke sensors by themselves is not easy. And many countries require safety check and certifications for the insurance coverage if accidence happens. That is a challenge of DIY home safety market growth in reality.” “We are approaching the smart home market in the way of home baby care and elderly care solutions.” In Q2 of year 2017, Gunitech plans to launch a new homecare kit, including an all-in-one sensor, smart plug, siren, panic button and lighting, all based on CSRmesh connectivity, a product of Qualcomm Technologies International. “We will deploy Beacon in that solution as well,” cited Shiu. Shiu added, “the Beacon working via Bluetooth Mesh based smart home system is also good for other applications such as smart hospitals, factory automation and others which requires indoor navigators.” Enabled by the Axalent IoT gateway and cloud platform, in 2016, Gunitech introduced CHEKKA, a CSRmesh-based smart home system that enables remote control, monitoring, alerts and smart interactions. The initial product kit includes a gateway, which uses QCA4531 Wi-Fi and CSR8811 Bluetooth chipsets, LED bulbs, smart plug and a 3-in-1 device integrating remote control, motion and light sensing. This product family utilizes Axalent’s IoT gateway technology and comprehensive IoT platform. By far, there are 30% of the Gunitech products are sold in B2C market. The majority of Gunitech revenue generates from the ODM business with other networking/communication companies who are manufacturing STB and gateways. Commenting on the smart home development, Shiu believes easier installation, better user experience and price are the three essentials to drive the growth. “From our testing experiences of many international smart home products in the market, the installation process and system stability for better user experience is still to be improved.”

The first dotdot certified device will emerge in the market in 2017, and there will be more dotdot over Thread products within one year. Julie Petron, the marketing director of ZigBee Alliance. By Elvina Yang
Japan’s Interest in ZigBee May Grow after the Dotdot Launch Dotdot is the previous application layer ‘ZigBee Cluster Library (ZCL)’ of ZigBee, positioning to be the solution for the fragmented IoT market. The ZigBee Alliance has rebranded it and planned possible expansion of the dotdot language in the future. “Dotdot, standardizing all IoT layers, is the application layer that speaks for the Internet of Things,” said Julie Petron, the marketing director of ZigBee Alliance. Dotdot works on the application layer, across ZigBee, IP and other transports. The rebranded solution is expected to be adopted quickly since ZigBee devices using ZCL already use dotdot. Also, ZigBee plans to launch certification and logo programs to bring vendors with more product branding and marketing possibilities. There will be revised specs between the current ZCL and the first dotdot
ZigBee Alliance announced its dotdot as the “universal language for the IoT,” showing another industry effort to enable various connected devices to work together more easily.

release. One update is that dotdot will be able to run over IP more effectively, and to prescribe how to bridge between different network technologies running dotdot as the transport layer. Take the context of dotdot in smart homes. Dotdot will define how various devices tell each other what they are and what they can do. For example, if a smart home owner wants to make the front door command lighting in the living room – which fulfills the scenario that the light in the living room automatically turn on as users come home – the door lock needs to know which lights are out there and be able to send commands to them. ZigBee is a popular wireless protocol and already has some presence in the IoT market. Existing ZigBee products already support dotdot. Also, the ZigBee Alliance has made dotdot work with Thread, another wireless protocols. The first dotdot certified device will emerge in the market in 2017, and there will be more dotdot over Thread products within one year, said ZigBee Alliance’s Petron. Dotdot will extend compatibility with more wireless protocols, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NB-IoT. The ZigBee Alliance expects an increase of dotdot products, and the first dotdot product over Wi-Fi in 2018, Petron
stated. Geographically, a strong group of companies are supporting ZigBee in Asia, and the growth in ZigBee adoption is obvious in China. “With dotdot, there might be more interest in Japan,” Petron said. The mission of ZigBee Alliance is to make IoT devices interoperable. Currently, ZigBee powers more than 100 million smart devices in homes and businesses, and there are over 30 manufacturers with more than 95 product models supporting ZigBee, according to the alliance.

Gateway and Z-wave Devices for Smart Home Application Products
Company
To implement an IoT solution, even experienced engineers have to invest much time and effort in tweaking drivers, revising source code and verifying the data received from end devices with very primitive tools. NEXCOM IoT Studio provides a web-based GUI so that engineers can define the data paths through simple actions. All the data they need will be there. 1. RGBW LED Dimmer TD14010: The device supports white light channel for adding pastel colors. There are four output channels to control each light source independently or together, and users can create their own color compositions. 2. Wireless Smart Switch TD13320: When the load exceeds the allowed wattage, overload protection will be activated to cut off the power and LED will blink to alert users. The device can calculate the total power consumption for energy saving. 3. In-Wall Power Monitor Switch TD1311Z1: The in-wall switch is compatible with Z-Wave networks. 2-Relay Switch up to 1650W/relay
can control and monitor power consumption. The device has overcurrent protection. 4. Active Motion Sensor SD12010: With PIR and ultrasound sensor characteristics, the device overcomes traditional sensors’ weaknesses like false detection of stationary movement and oversensitivity to ambient temperature. 5. Door Sensor TS2000/TS2001/TS2002: Dual power selection - battery or external DC voltage between 9V to 30V. It supports NO/NC function (up to 2 connections). The operation works with the Z-Wave® Plus standard. Anti-tamper is added for alert. 6. Home Gateway FG3200: It is with user-friend interface to monitor and control home activity from the local or remotely. It supports scheduling and scene setting to echo flexible daily operations. Besides, it also supports 500 series Z-Wave® Plus and Wireless 802.11 b/g/n Standard commands.

Global product launches, live demonstrations, new bilateral agreements, and updated UAE fire safety codes were among the many highlights that shared centre stage, as the curtains came down on the world’s leading trade show for security, safety and fire protection. Intersec 2017 was recently concluded at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition. According to organiser Messe Frankfurt Middle East, Intersec 2017 attracted 33,501 visitors from 129 countries, as they sourced solutions and networked with 1,304 exhibitors from 58 countries spanning 56,300sqm of 70 mySMAhome.com 2017
exhibition space. The 5% year-on-year growth in both visitor numbers and exhibition size underlined the international importance of the annual showcase, where more than 150 exhibitors launched products across the seven show sections of Commercial Security, Fire & Rescue,
Curtains Come Down on interseC 2017 after new reCorD of exhibitor anD Visitor turnout Safety & Health, Homeland Security & Policing, Information Security, Smart Home & Building Automation, and Physical & Perimeter Security. “The Middle East commercial security, homeland security, and fire safety market continues to grow, and consequently there’s a strong need for technological advancements in solutions in terms of features, specifications, and upgrades,” said Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East. “In an industry that is constantly evolving, and where more and more projects are being released into the market, the need of the hour is to be present at the right time with the right solution,” Pauwels said. With its wide spectrum of the latest safety and security solutions and varied range of cuttingedge products from leading international brands, Intersec plays a crucial role by putting global and local providers directly in touch with regional and international buyers. The show’s success is due to it being able to efficiently provide market-specific solutions, Pauwels added. Intersec 2017 featured 17 of the world’s top 20 security solutions providers, including Avigilon, a Canadian-based full solutions provider of video analytics, network video management solutions, surveillance cameras, and access control solutions.
Exhibitor FEEdback Dave Dalleske, Vice President of EMEA Sales at Avigilon, spoke of the latest developments in Avigilon’s Appearance Search video analytics technology, a sophisticated search engine that sorts through hours of footage to locate a specific person of interest across an entire site. For example, in a situation where someone leaves an unintended bag in a public place, with Avigilon Appearance Search, users can take the video management system, see a bag, and identify the person that left it there, as it allows users to search all
cameras across an entire site. But what if that took place 20 minutes ago? The real question is where is that person now? Avigilon Appearance Search technology allows users to click on that individual and say not only where they are but where he or she came from, by identifying previous and last-known locations. CP Plus, a global manufacturer of advanced security and surveillance solutions, launched Cosmic and Astra, two high definition (HD) cameras with Uni+ technology, offering compatibility across all previous and current technologies in CCTV surveillance.
Smart SErvicES in dubai Intersec is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and supported by the Dubai Civil Defence, the Dubai Police, and the Dubai Police Academy. His Excellency Major General Rashid Thani Al Matrooshi, Director General of the Dubai Civil Defence, said: “At Intersec 2017, we’re showcasing three key initiatives; the first is the floating firefighting systems for water bodies that are used by the Civil Defence and Marine Rescue sectors. The second is the Dolphin, a firefighting system that incorporates a jetski and a jetpack that will allow Civil Defence to tackle blazes from the water. These are in addition to the smart services working with a dashboard system to collect data from all the centres in Dubai and delivering it to the decision makers to apply it in their daily actions. With 83% of exhibitors based outside of the UAE, Intersec’s international participation was spearheaded by a 10% year-on-year increase in exhibitors from Germany and the UK, as 82 German companies (64 pavilion and 18 standalone exhibitors) lined-up alongside 143 British companies (86 pavilion and 57 standalone exhibitors). 2017 mySMAhome.com 71

IFSEC IntErnatIonal to HIgHlIgHt Smart HomE and Iot tHIS YEar IFSEC International, Europe’s largest security event, is again taking place this year at ExCeL London, June 20-22, where smart homes, smart buildings and connected security systems will be highlighted in the designated Smart Zone.
IFSEC brings together the best of the security industry worldwide, with well over 27,000 visitors, 650 exhibitors and 80 speakers. Following on from last year’s hugely successful ‘Home Automation House’, a fully functioning smart home in the middle of the exhibition floor, visitors can expect an even more heightened focus on all things ‘smart’ in 2017. New for 2017, the Smart Zone will feature across all three dates of the show. This new area has been created to cover not only home automation devices but also the wider IoT, including smart commercial buildings, smart offices and connected security systems. The IFSEC International Smart Zone will provide the opportunity to get hands on all of the latest smart products to hit the shelves, from smart

Test and try the latest devices first hand, quiz manufacturers the ins and outs of their solutions, and get a behind the scenes preview of what they actually take to install and maintain. There’s no doubt that increasingly connected devices bring a new security risk to homes, places of work, and data. That’s why the Smart Zone’s designated seminar theatre is set up to let visitors learn from security experts as they discuss IoT best practice and assess worst case scenario case studies, while looking ahead to future technology and emerging trends. Do not miss your chance to access the latest products, learn from industry thought leaders, and network with over 27,000 colleagues, at this year’s Smart Zone, located in the heart of IFSEC International 2017. Apple Advocates Smart Home Adoption and Lists Every HomeKit-enabled Products on Website Starting in March, Apple began to promote HomeKit on the company’s website. Firstly, it updated the HomeKit page to better explain what smart home is and how the HomeKit system works with connected devices made by different manufacturers. Target Store Starts to Sell Own-Branded Smart Lamps U.S. retailer Target set up the Open House section in its San Francisco store where consumers can experience connected devices in July 2015. It was spotted recently that the store has rolled out smart lamps under its private label. Target’s smart lamp works like similar products in the market – users can use a mobile app to turn the light on and off, change light colors, dim the light, etc. One feature that differentiates the Target lamp is the inclusion of a manual switch so that users can still control the light without using a smartphone. There are even more own-branded appliances in Target’s online store, such as smart floor lamp, ceiling lamp and taller table lamp.

Amazon Reaches New Milestone by Collecting 10,000 Alexa Skills
Huawei Introduces GigaHome Solution for Operators Offering a Better Smart Home Wi-Fi Service
There are now 10,000 skills available on the Alexa platform – a new milestone for e-commerce giant Amazon that has dabbled extensively in the smart home industry. The number of available skills has been fast-growing. One-and-a-half years ago Amazon officially released Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) for third-party developers. And one year after ASK’s launch, the number of skills reached 1,000, in June 2016. By September 2016, the number tripled to 3,000, and in January 2017, the number surpassed 7,000. And a month later the number reached 10,000. Still, many challenges lie ahead. According to a report published recently by voice-app analytics startup VoiceLabs, 69% of the Alexa skills has not yet been reviewed by users.
Chinese tech firm Huawei has introduced GigaHome, a new solution for home network operators, designed to provide a better smart home service experience. Huawei’s solution focuses on home gateways and offers flexible home WiFi extension through media including CAT5 lines, power lines and wireless repeaters. The ultimate goal of the offering is to help operators provide a more intuitive and smooth smart home experience for the clients.

Smartphone Pixel Now Works Like Google Home
Dropcam Co-Founder Greg Duffy to Join Apple
iPhone will now meet a mobile phone having similar smart home functionalities – Pixel. Google has officially extended Google Home’s capabilities to its flagship smartphone. Although Google Assistant, the company’s virtual assistant application, was built in both Google Home and Pixel devices, they don’t function in the same way. The ability to control smart devices at home was only limited to Google Home, but it is now extended to the smartphone. Google Pixel is now fully capable of controlling home gadgets from Nest, Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings, Belkin, Wemo and Honeywell. This means that it is no longer necessary for homeowners to buy a Google Home to control their smart devices, since Pixel can now also do the same.
Apple has recruited Greg Duffy, the cofounder of connected security camera maker Dropcam, to lead a special project in the organization, indicating Apple’s consistent interest in the smart home market. Founded in 2009 by Greg Duffy and Aamir Virani, Dropcam is best known for its Wi-Fi video streaming security camera. In 2014, Google’s smart home arm, Nest, bought Dropcam for USD$555 million and the two founders joined the Nest team to continue working on the camera. Google’s security camera product Nest Cam, introduced in 2015, looks just like the successor to the camera product Dropcam Pro. Duffy left Nest and joined Google in 2015, allegedly for differences in opinions with Tony Fadell, the founder and previous head executive of Nest.
Electrolux Acquires Anova for $115 Million to Expand Its Connected Home Business Swedish home appliance company Electrolux has extended its foray into connected devices by acquiring Anova, a smart kitchenware company based in San Francisco. Electrolux has paid US$115 million in cash to Anova for the deal, and may pay out an additional US$135 million if Anova performs well financially in the future. Receiving market attention back in 2014 in a Kickstarter campaign, Anova’s Precision Cooker connects with a smartphone to make cooking sous vide easier. Sous vide comes from French, referring to the process of vacuum sealing the food and bathing it in hot water. The technique is all about cooking under a precise temperature for a set period of time.
Sonos Debuts New Speaker without Alexa Support Home entertainment audio firm Sonos announced it would work on Alexa integration back in August, 2016. However, as more Alexa skills are being added, there’s still no one named after Sonos. Sonos said the company is still working on its Alexa skill because it wants to cater a true quality user experience. Despite not having an Alexa skill, Sonos has introduced a new home speaker with an unusual look. The new Sonos Playbase is 58 millimeters in height with an oblong and flat shape designed to sit beneath most television sets. The design of the audio device is meant to sit invisibly in the background so that users may focus on the sound, the company said.
AT&T, Ericsson and Qualcomm Successfully Make the First Phone Call via IoT Devices AT&T, Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies together announced they’ve successfully performed a Voice over LTE (VoLTE) call for the Internet of Things (IoT). They are the first to make such practice in the industry, the companies said. The alliance also said confidently that the technology is mature enough and ready for commercial launch. For network operators, the innovation allows them to extend businesses into the IoT device ecosystem. With this new technology, IoT devices will be able to perform voice services for security alarm panels, remote first aid kits, wearables, digital locks or disposable security garments. In other words, connected devices will let users make phone calls.
