Editor’s Note US-China Trade War Pushes Chinese Manufacturers to Invest Overseas It was announced last week that the U.S. will start to impose tariff on more than US$200 billion worth of Chinese goods starting this week, with tariff rates reaching as high as 25 percent. This announcement will significantly impact Chinese manufacturers, especially those operating in industries such as cars, electronic processors, electric machinery, hard drives, iron and steel parts, electric integrated circuits, etc. Chinese manufacturers are planning to flee overseas to avoid US tariffs. According to some analysts, even without the new tariff, some industry supply chains in China were already prepared to relocate outside the country. These labor-centric industries will now mostly move to other developing countries. For the security industry, manufacturing supply chains have mostly been located in China, which will not seem to change in the next five years. However, in order to avoid US tariffs, major Chinese manufacturers are still planning to move some factories to Southeast Asia, particularly in Vietnam. In the short term, it seems that the trade war will not help the U.S. solve its overall trade deficit problem. Some researchers have forecasted that the global value chain might start to change if the US-China trade war continues.

Education ZYDUS SCHOOL BUSES SECURED BY CP PLUS CAMERAS Zydus School of Excellence (ZSE) has been one of the most prominent schools in Godhavi, Ahmadabad. A total of 33 buses transport students to and fro the school, and the management wanted a way to secure and manage its bus services more efficiently. Each bus was fitted with high resolution analog cameras installed at its entry and exit points, and a CP PLUS MDVR with HDD for recording. These MDVRs are also GPS-enabled to tag video evidence with the location. Also included in the solution is enterprise-level data management software to monitor and manage end-to-end evidence. The challenge however was the short time within which the project needed to be delivered, also subject to the availability of the vehicles. Limited access to electricity also posed a significant challenge, requiring the use of special battery operated tools.

Just because of this, installers usually face problems in scheduling and prioritizing their work, not to mention the travelling costs these ensue. eedless to say, urbanization is a global phenomenon as more people are moving from rural areas to urban environments. And the trend is expected to continue in the mid- to long-term. According to the 2018 Revision of World Urbanization Prospects report by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, today 55 percent of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 68 percent by 2050. “Projections show that urbanization, the gradual shift in residence of the human population from rural to urban areas, combined with the overall growth of the world’s population could add another 2.5 billion people to urban areas by 2050,” the report said. Nowhere is the urbanization trend more noticeable than in Southeast Asia, where cities are expanding at a quicker pace than the global average or the rest of Asia on average, according to a report by McKinsey Global Institute titled “Smart Cities in Southeast Asia.” “Today there are more than 230 cities across the region, each with more than 200,000 people. By 2030, another 90 million people are expected to move to cities across ASEAN. That would be more than 2.5 times the growth rate of population expected for the region,

indicating that cities will become even more central to Southeast Asian economies and societies,” the report said.

Turning to Smart Technology

As Asia cities get bigger and more crowded, they are inevitably subject to the damaging effects that urbanization brings. As a result, they turn to smart technologies and solutions to tackle various issues, thus developing themselves into “smart cities.” “Rapid growth in Southeast Asia’s urbanization trend has led to increased traffic,

Improving Transportation With ITS

In general, smart city initiatives address problems in several domains, chief among them transportation, which is a challenging issue facing Asian cities. “Today, congestion is one of the key productivity drains in Southeast Asia, exacting a toll that has been estimated at 2 to 5 percent of each country’s GDP,” the McKinsey report said, citing other negative effects traffic congestions can bring. “Studies have shown that longer daily commutes are correlated with lower life satisfaction and even increased risk of anxiety, poor fitness, obesity, high blood pressure and other physical maladies. Moreover, when cars spend a large proportion of time idling, they generate greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.” As a result, Asian cities are more and more turning to intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to improve their traffic. A major player in this regard is the city-state of Singapore, which has implemented the Expressway

Monitoring Advisory System (EMAS), Parking Guidance System (PGS) and TrafficScan, all connected to the integrated i-Transport system on the backend. According to the Singapore Land Transport Authority, the systems work together to aggregate and analyze data and deliver real-time traffic information to motorists through both public and private communications channels. “Motorists can benefit by receiving real-time traffic information on mobile phones, web portals and navigation devices; avoiding traffic incidents or congested routes; making informed decisions on alternative routes to reach destinations faster; and seeing their overall traveling experience enhanced,” the agency said. Furthermore, Singapore has implemented dynamic congestion pricing through its Electronic Road Pricing System. Generally speaking, a single-sensor fixed IP camera offers high performance and great resolution, but it has drawbacks, the biggest of which is it covers a narrow field of view, which is less than ideal when surveilling a wide area. single device. In fact, demands for panoramic cameras are set to increase. A report by Market Research Future forecasted that the global panoramic camera market is expected to reach US$36 billion at a compound annual growth rate of 31 percent between 2016 and 2022. The study cited “high demand for cost-effective cameras to serve the advanced photography market, an increasing digital photography market and increasing demand for safety and security measures in public places as well as in the corporate� as main growth drivers. Different Types of Multisensor Cameras It’s important to know that multisensor cameras can be categorized into panoramic and multi-directional.

The former has fixed lenses, offering a panoramic view of an area. “Panoramic multisensor cameras fully cover a wide field of view. For example, a 180-degree camera can cover an entire street scene, and a 270-degree camera mounted on an outside corner of a building can provide total coverage in that space. These cameras are about providing situational awareness across wide areas. The more advanced cameras here stitch and blend images from the multiple sensors and present you with a seamless view,” said Kevin Saldanha, Principal Product Manager for Imaging at Pelco by Schneider Electric. A multisensor camera with multi-directional and adjustable lenses, meanwhile, allow the user to see several directions at once. “An adjustable multi-directional camera provides more flexibility in situations where you don’t require a continuous view, but would rather use the camera to look at specific areas. In this case, each camera can be adjusted independently. One camera can face the doorway, while the other cameras are used to view specific areas of a large room,” said Bob Mesnik, President of Kintronics. “The sensors can be positioned so they point in multiple directions to offer detailed views on several angles in a particular area. They are ideal for areas such as hallways or road intersections, on outer corners of buildings especially in locations such as schools or retail stores,” said Olof Leidecker, Global Product Manager for Multisensor and Ultra-High Resolution Cameras at Axis Communications. “If equipped with PTZ capabilities, the cameras can provide wide area coverage as well as detailed close-up images.”

Benefits

There are numerous benef its to multisensor cameras. Cost is one obvious factor, as one device can replace three to four in covering a wide area. Meanwhile, the cost of installation and maintenance can also be saved due to the same reason. “A single multisensor camera, with the ability to zoom into multiple regions of interest, can replace multiple conventional (or separate) units, allowing a return on investment that is easily measurable as fewer cameras, licenses, installation and required accessories result in lower cost of ownership,” said Jeff Whitney, VP of Marketing at Arecont Vision. “Multisensor cameras are a c o s t - e f fe c t i ve way o f p r ov i d i n g coverage — you have one hole for installation, one wire to pull and, if done right, one license at the VMS. Generally speaking, multisensor cameras can come in handy for end user entities with wide open spaces. “These include parking lots, airports, factories and large stadiums where instead of having three or four cameras at each corner, you can have as little as three cameras or even less, covering effectively the same area with less blind spots,” said Saleh Makarb, Product Manager at Dahua Technology. “Commercial buildings, hotels, residences, schools and airports have open spaces including lobby, cafeteria and indoor gyms. According to Sorri, “To improve their business in these sectors, SIs involved in optimizing security can provide asset services to security managers. This can include integrated access control to help them have a greater overview and more control over the security network. With this increased visibility and increased overall surveillance, security managers can ensure they are running their safety and security systems at the optimal level without taking on more resources at a greater cost.” SIs focused on IT can further improve their business in this sector by providing more integration between IT systems and security measures. This will allow users to interconnect different systems and gain a wider coverage of what is happening in and around the plant. One way this happens is by SIs providing technologies that can work alongside third-party applications. This improves overall security and safety. According to Kelvin Miller, Sales Director at Patol, the commercial success of any power plant depends on its ability to manage operational risks and provide continuity of supply. Protecting the plant from the threat of fire is a fundamental part of this. Power plants have their own requirements in terms of fire safety and it is, therefore, important to use companies that not only have the right technology but also the experience in meeting the specific needs of what can be a challenging environment. Pauline Norstrom, MD at NetVu/Dedicated Micros, added that power plants have faced substantial challenges when mitigating the risk of fire which may bring output to a halt. “The risks are frequently related to the environment in which power plants operate,” Norstrom said. “Turbine halls, in particular, are difficult to protect due to the large voluminous spaces required to operate the equipment. Stratification of smoke results in detection methods such as beam and aspirating being ineffective. Many power plant operators do not have any adequate smoke and flame detection in their plants.”

What’s Happening in the Field

When it comes to technology, there are quite a few ways to go about to ensure fire protection in power plants. Major among them are visual smoke detection solutions, infrared and aspirating smoke detection solutions. Needless to say, each of these come with its own pros and cons. “The large spaces present challenges to any technology deployed to detect smoke and fire,” Norstrom said. “In power plants, other unique conditions prevail: few

ith the security industry in India moving forward at a reasonably rapid rate, a question that is often asked is which verticals are seeing the most demand. Truth be told, as with several other aspects of the Indian market, the answer to this is not so simple, for two reasons. First, being a fast-growing developing market, almost all verticals are seeing demand. It is difficult to pinpoint a single vertical and say that there is more demand here than the rest. Second, the Indian market is extremely fragmented and diverse. Demands and characteristics vary from one state to another, making it difficult to get an overall picture. However, from a global solution provider’s Yogesh Dutta, COO, CP PLUS perspective, the need for a fairly comprehensive picture is necessary for business decisions. So, we asked some of the major systems integrators (SIs) and manufacturers in the country to get their inputs on the matter.

Beginning with the Government

The Indian central and state governments are slowly implementing security solutions in public places. This is a crucial point as many private establishments in the country are yet to install security systems because the government has not made an effort to enforce them. In fact, recent developments do show changes at the grassroots level. “Banks, educational institutes and government verticals are presenting the highest demand in the demand for security and surveillance technology,”

said Yogesh Dutta, COO of CP PLUS. “With the government’s mandate of compulsory installation of video surveillance cameras in banks and financial institutions amid rising vandalism and crimes, more and more banks are considering their premises with video surveillance solutions mostly integrated with access control and fire alarm systems. Education sector has also seen an upsurge in the demand for security solutions keeping in mind the security of children and students and the rise in campus violence. Also, with the government’s emphasis on making cities smart, the demand for city surveillance solutions has risen manifold.” Nanda Kumar, President of the Electronic Security Association of India (ESAI) who is also an SI, said that surveillance cameras continue to remain the most sought-after security product in the country. in awareness campaigns on the need for surveillance systems and encouraging the use of cameras in public places. Notably, several regional governments had sped up the process of enforcement recently. Early in the month of August, the government of Karnataka, home to India’s technology hub, Bangalore, issued a statement mandating immediate installation of security cameras in places where people gather. This ranged from commercial buildings to religious establishments. The Delhi government, India’s capital city, has also ramped up efforts to boost city surveillance efforts. “City surveillance has seen an upsurge in the demand for high-end professional cameras with analytical capabilities that offer a view of the entire city’s premises,” Dutta added. The government requirements, in themselves, start from the defense sector, where several large manufacturers are already present. According to some SIs, the recent concerns on Chinese manufacturers and data safety in the U.S. has had an impact on India as well. This may lead to government projects avoiding Chinese manufacturers, for reasons that include political, and present an opportunity for other solution providers.

Commercial to Residential

Large-scale retailers, the hospitality sectors and establishments like malls are already making surveillance cameras a

standard. According to Vinayak Sane, Principal Consultant and Chief Technical Architect at Elmark Engineers, malls are looking to expand their security coverage. There is also a stronger interest in analytics. “Previously, malls had security cameras only in the lobbies,” Sane said. “Now, they are trying to install cameras that would cover multiple stores, pooling shops into one feed. They are trying to utilize this feed for people counting, customer analytics, to understand people’s interest in specific brands and products.” While cameras can be termed essential to many verticals, the use of access control and fire systems is more limited and hence easier to point out. Again, banks and educational institutions are the leading verticals, according to Dutta. Moving on from the commercial sector, the residential vertical is increasingly seeing demand for surveillance, access control and fire alarm systems. According to Kumar, there is even a rising demand for smart home solutions integrated with the likes of Google Home and Amazon Alexa.

Where Lies the Opportunity?

That the Indian market offers a number of opportunities for global security solution providers is obvious. However, a number of large players, who reached here early have an advantage. According to industry professionals like Kumar, there is space for new players to enter, but they have to understand that providing support across the length and breadth of the country is crucial. For reasons ranging from distance to infrastructure limitations and language barriers, travel and communication from one part of India to another is not easy. Hence, solution providers need to have representatives in every major city, providing support. They also need to invest in marketing and should not depend on importers to market for them. Importers often have limited resources and cannot market the products as well as the manufacturers. Competitive pricing is also important. The point here is to realize that there are several manufacturers who are offering products of various price ranges. While earlier the quality of such products was a concern, SIs are now convinced that such companies too can provide good quality. However, the support these companies provide to end users is less than desirable, according to some SIs who compared the situation with those in developed markets. At times, customers have to try contacting the customer care for days on end, with calls going unanswered and promises of a call back never being met. All said and done, taking on a market with such a competition requires a deep understanding of price sensitivity and customer requirements. For international manufacturers, finding partners, intense marketing, and top-quality support should be a priority in ensuring success in India.

Law enforcement is also using face recognition technology for humanitarian reasons as well, Rodriguez explained: “Facial recognition technology can identify deceased persons who do not have valid forms of identification on them and to identify persons who cannot identify themselves, such as persons stricken with dementia, Alzheimer’s or amnesia. It is also often used to help identify and locate lost or missing children.”

Between January and March, Google shipped 3.2 million Google Home devices, while Amazon shipped 2.5 million Echo units. Google Home sold in the first quarter 2018 accounted for 36.2 percent of the global smart speaker shipment, while Amazon Echo made up 27.7 percent, Alibaba was at 11.8 percent and Xiaomi at 7 percent. shipped worldwide in the first quarter. Amazon’s shipment fell drastically from 79.6 percent in the first quarter of 2017 to 27.7 percent one year later. Canalys attributed Google’s positive performance in sales to its distribution strategy. “Amazon is fighting back hard, and the sheer quantity of Alexa Skills and smart home integrations will be tough for any competitor to match,” said Ben Stanton, an analyst at Canalys.

Since complications during birthing can result in the deaths of the mother and/or the calf/foal, farmers must monitor animals when they are near to giving birth. The USDA found that nearly 18 percent of all non-predator deaths for calves was a result of calvingrelated problems. “Over its lifetime a cow can be worth several thousands of dollars. So it can be a big loss if there were birth complications and you lost a calf, cow or both,” Valyear explained. “If the animals being bred are prize winning then their value can increase drastically. For instance we had one client that sold his new colt for CAD$250,000 [US$191,289]. You can imagine the loss there. So a camera system will easily pay for itself.”

With cameras able to keep an eye out 24/7, video surveillance allows farmers to watch animals from a distance, also allowing them to act faster when something happens. “For example, during the calving season you can save calves and cows when complications occur,” Didron said.
