We observed that storage now goes to edge devices. ‘Products of the Month’ for this issue features two integrated camera systems both embedded with recording solutions. Meanwhile, NVRs are actually taking over DVRs, especially in SME sectors. The original mass markets for 16ch DVRs, such as primary and high schools, have been replaced by 32ch NVRs. Corporate News HID Acquires Software Developer to Strengthen Access Portfolio for Government HID Global, a worldwide supplier for secure identity solutions, announced it has acquired Codebench, a software developer in physical security identity management particularly for the government sector. The acquisition will enable HID Global to offer complete, field-tested solutions that speed up and simplify deployment for its federal agency and contractor customers. Corporate News Shell Liquefied Gas Plant Seeks Total Reliability Integrated security and surveillance technology specialist, Synectics Industrial Systems, has developed a bespoke CCTV solution to protect the world's largest gas-to-liquids (GTL) plant in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar. The US$18 to 19 billion Pearl GTL project, located in Ras Laffan Industrial City, is a joint development between Qatar Petroleum and Shell. The sheer size of the project, 2.5 square kilometers, which is roughly the size of New York's Central Park, presented a significant challenge. Page Europa needed a fully digital CCTV solution that would not only protect the plant area, consisting of office complexes and a vast perimeter fence measuring 1620mx2100m, but also onshore process areas and the unmanned offshore platforms. High end H.264 IP encoding capability was a key requirement to enable this level of functionality for such a large site. “Big Data” refers to a collection of data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process using on-hand database management tools. It helps unify large data sets and allows for additional information to be derived from analysis than would be possible from separate smaller sets with the same amount of total data. Business leaders have responded to this, with CEOs being the number one supporter of big data initiatives, and 59 percent of businesses stating “Big Data Initiatives” are a high/critical priority for the future, according to IDG Enterprise. The use of video as big data could potentially be combined with the formation of cloud infrastructure, which has had some success in 2012. CEM Systems, part of Tyco Security Products, announced their security management system has been successfully installed at Abu Dhabi Investment Council headquarters at Al Bahar Towers. Abu Dhabi Investment Council is an investment arm of the government of Abu Dhabi. The council is responsible for investing part of the government’s surplus financial resources through a globally diversified investment strategy. Work began in 2009 to construct Al Bahar Towers, the new office for the council. The security solution, which comprises of access control, CCTV, intercom, and perimeter and physical security, secures both of the Al Bahar Towers, as well as the shared parking, ground and mezzanine levels. A custom lift control interface was developed by CEM allowing identification and special access for VIP users requesting lift call. Lift cars are then assigned on a priority basis. The system software modules at Al Bahar Towers provides a real time graphical representation of events and alarms occurring throughout the system. It also includes visual imaging and pass production system which allows the council administrators to produce professional quality permanent and temporary ID passes.

Corporate News ARINC Selected for Security Solution at Doha International Airport The New Doha International Airport (NDIA) has choosen ARINC EMEA to design and build their integrated airport security solutions. The contract for the 40 square kilometers site covers more than 100 buildings, which will have the capacity to cater 45 million passengers each year. Headquartered in Dubai, ARINC EMEA established major system integration contracts

with three of the largest airport construction projects in the Middle East — Doha, Cairo, and Dubai. ARINC currently provides protection for millions of daily passengers who use public transit systems and airports throughout the U.S., and also protects a number of US government, militar y, chemical, transpor tation, and petrochemical installations, including seaports and airports.

Samsung Appoints Senior VP for Product Planning and Strategic Marketing

Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is the U.K.'s fifth oldest university. Today it boasts some 13,900 students, and is currently going through rapid expansion with three new buildings due to be opened in the next few years. With the expansion and surveillance systems required, some immediate issues needed to be addressed; the control room had been outgrown as over time more equipment and staff had come on board. Four separate standalone CCTV systems were in operation, with proprietary cameras and components requiring spares and maintenance from different manufacturers. A new system would have to be easily scalable to accommodate the future expansion plans of the university and be implemented with minimal disruption. The solution would need to capitalize on some 35 existing analog CCTV cameras as well as introducing new cameras. The Scottish building services and facilities management company Arthur McKay was chosen by the university for the experience working with IP surveillance and had worked previously with both Axis and video management specialists Milestone Systems The integrator installed 20 Axis network cameras and integrated 35 existing analog cameras into the IP surveillance system through video encoders. All data is carried on a VLAN, with the university's extensive network supplying 100 Mbps of bandwidth to all cameras via one gigabit link at the server end. The system can now be expanded as the campus grows, with plans for 16 new network cameras to be deployed campus-wide in the next three years.

Jonas Andersson, who will be joining Samsung Techwin, has worked for Axis Communications for the last 18 years in a number of senior roles including Director of Video Product Management and Video Solutions and for the last five years, Business Development Director. He has also been Chairman of the ONVIF Steering Committee since November 2008. A key objective of Samsung Techwin for 2013 and beyond is to build installers, systems integrators, specifiers, and end-users’ confidence in Samsung IP equipment and exceed their expectations.

IP Cameras Ensure Passenger Safety at German Bus Terminal Stadtverkehr Lubeck (SL) commissioned a planning agency to develop a security solution that would integrate harmoniously and discreetly into the existing infrastructure, but would still be visible enough to discourage potential offenders. The previous analog surveillance system had finally reached the limits of its technical capabilities, and needed a comprehensive, yet cost-efficient upgrade with modern, powerful camera and video components. SL's final choice of components for a digital camera/video management system was driven by the need for premium image quality, as provided by Basler's IP cameras. SL provides regional public bus transport in and around the city of Lubeck, and the ferry service between Lubeck and Travemunde, Germany. Passenger safety is a major concern for the company during the bus ride itself, but also in the waiting times at and around the terminal facilities, before bus departures or after arrival. With the new IP cameras, users can specifically select the areas of interest. At the Lubeck bus terminal, all private areas and staff are protected from the cameras’ view. Data protection officials and SL’s Works Council were consulted to approve the areas to be monitored and the maximum storage time of all recorded image data.

US Five-Star Hotel Chain in Nigeria Streamlines Staff Management Le Meridien is one of the world's renowned hotel chains, with a portfolio of more than 100 luxury and upscale hotels in more than 50 countries worldwide. Located in metropolitans across the globe, Le Meridien hotels provide top-notch service and comfort when it comes to hospitality. Recently, FingerTec products have been selected by the Le Meridien in Lagos, Nigeria, as a time and attendance solution. Many of the employees in the hotel work within specified shifts to ensure that the hotel services function round-the-clock. Before, the hotel was using the manual time punch cards to sort out their staff attendance. The hotel decided to equip their premises with the FingerTec product units for their main management office. Now, the hotel is able to get rid of all their manual punch cards and manage and analyze reports much easier.

Safe City Program in Ukraine Managed by AxxonSoft The idea to create a safe city video surveillance system occurred to top law enforcement in Donetsk, a city in Eastern Ukraine, in 2005. Viktor Dubovik, head of the Donetsk office of the Internal Affairs Ministry, promoted the project alongside Vladimir Semibratsky, technical coordinator and originator of the project. The office conducted an analysis of the available software and hardware solutions, gauging the difficulty of establishing such a system in the city. Two key requirements drove the project: laying of fiber-optic lines to be owned directly by the Donetsk office of the Internal Affairs Ministry, and use of the video management capabilities of the Axxon software platform to store video and distribute it to operator monitors. The Safe City project blossomed to 800 cameras in different public gathering areas. Video servers were housed predominantly at the Police Quick Reaction Center and in the police room at the Musical Park of Culture and Rest; the latter received video from the Donbass Arena and adjacent park areas, with about 200 cameras in all. In years of operation and handling massive sporting events, Donetsk's Safe City project has made the possibility of an integrated safety system monitoring all key locations in a major city into a reality.

IP solutions, which is great news for the NVR market,” shared Evelyn Kao, Product Manager at QNAP Systems. “While larger projects are demanding network solutions of some sort, analog is still the domain of the small installations or home market. However, with the advent of network home cameras and cloud solutions, even the small domestic solution is starting to go IP,” added Biddulph. “Some folks prefer an HD solution with one or two different camera models to fulfill the needs of an entire site, perhaps looking at cost of ownership and simplicity of design over a more elegant solution. “NVRs are starting to be used in more scenarios, especially with the launch of 4 and 16 channel units that look and feel much like analog DVRs. With a monitor output and DVD writer, these NVRs make IP solutions easier for smaller installers and operators. It is now not uncommon to see 4 channel HD solutions in small high value retail installations,” said Biddulph. Another factor is PoE enabled NVRs that allow for plug-and-play. “We are the first manufacturer to develop and successfully implement PoE NVRs; the plug-and-play function makes everything much easier. These PoE NVRs proved to be very popular with the SMB and DIY market,” said Colin Wang, NVR Product Manager at Dahua.

NVRs are basically customized servers that are built for the purpose of handling IP camera systems, and usually operate on Windows or Linux. These days, NVRs are rack mountable and are even available in one rack unit sizes. Many NVRs are open platform to facilitate maximum flexibility and scalability, which is especially useful when deploying large or enterprise solutions.

With PC-based NVRs, the number of channels is “unlimited,” and even more convincing is the VMS providers who offer free software that is preinstalled in their NVRs. The current NVR migration trend is also percolating into the original 4 channel and 8 channel DVR markets, such as the home security and retail sector. Large-scale projects, such as critical infrastructures and stadium, of course, have already adopted high channe NVRs. Sending back faulty hardware through a manufacturer ’s return merchandise authorization (RMA) is costly and time consuming and often times frustrating too. For missioncritical applications, extra hardware expenditure must be allocated for spares in order to eliminate down time. Another option is to look for NVRs that are especially designed so that the video management program is preloaded in a DOM (disk on module) chip.
