To meet the particular requirements for security, such as high resolution video quality, and real-time viewing and recording, the reliability and scalability of storage systems gradually steal the spotlight. We observed that storage now goes to edge devices. ‘Products of the Month’ for this issue features two integrated camera systems both embedded with recording solutions. Meanwhile, NVRs are actually taking over DVRs, especially in SME sectors. The original mass markets for 16ch DVRs, such as primary and high schools, have been replaced by 32ch NVRs. Now, the migration trend to NVRs even reaches the original 4ch and 8ch DVR markets, such as home security and retail. ‘Product Exploration’ examines the drivers for NVRs and provides some tips for buying NVRs. When the enterprises have the option to store data in the cloud, not only does it save more of their IT spendings, but also create the highest value. Being able to identify what ‘real cloud’ is becomes extra important. The article of ‘Viewpoint’ explains the business differences between real cloud technology and the pretenders, and show why that matters to end users’ budget, data, and risk management profile. Do read these articles to know why 2013 could be the year for virtualized storage for large-scale surveillance environments and critical infrastructures!

Video Metadata as "Big Data"

Abu Dhabi Investment Council Adopts Integrated Security Management

“Big Data” refers to a collection of data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process using on-hand database management tools. It helps unify large data sets and allows for additional information to be derived from analysis than would be possible from separate smaller sets with the same amount of total data. Business leaders have responded to this, with CEOs being the number one supporter of big data initiatives, and 59 percent of businesses stating “Big Data Initiatives” are a high/critical priority for the future, according to IDG Enterprise. The use of video as big data could potentially be combined with the formation of cloud infrastructure, which has had some success in 2012. A simple example would involve pushing the video streams and performing the analysis “in the cloud,” and setting up a business model where end users pay on a per report basis, for example, paying to receive queue length analysis. While big data is not Video Surveillance Trend going to be a mainstream in 2013 concept for video surveilThe use and aggregation lance in 2013, IMS of analytics and video Research (an IHS company) feed metadata as big predicts that the use and data will continue aggregation of analytics to grow and video feed metadata as big data will continue to grow, and that businesses looking to utilize big data will increasingly look to the potential to incorporate v i d e o fe e d m e t a d a t a streams into their data sets. UK University FutureProofs Security System with IP Surveillance

Samsung Appoints Senior VP for Product Planning and Strategic Marketing

Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is the U.K.'s fifth oldest university. Today it boasts some 13,900 students, and is currently going through rapid expansion with three new buildings due to be opened in the next few years. With the expansion and surveillance systems required, some immediate issues needed to be addressed; the control room had been outgrown as over time more equipment and staff had come on board. Four separate standalone CCTV systems were in operation, with proprietary cameras and components requiring spares and maintenance from different manufacturers. A new system would have to be easily scalable to accommodate the future expansion plans of the university and be implemented with minimal disruption. The solution would need to capitalize on some 35 existing analog CCTV cameras as well as introducing new cameras. The Scottish building services and facilities management company Arthur McKay was chosen by the university for the experience working with IP surveillance and had worked previously with both Axis and video management specialists Milestone Systems The integrator installed 20 Axis network cameras and integrated 35 existing analog cameras into the IP surveillance system through video encoders. All data is carried on a VLAN, with the university's extensive network supplying 100 Mbps of bandwidth to all cameras via one gigabit link at the server end. The system can now be expanded as the campus grows, with plans for 16 new network cameras to be deployed campus-wide in the next three years.

IP Cameras Ensure Passenger Safety at German Bus Terminal Stadtverkehr Lubeck (SL) commissioned a planning agency to develop a security solution that would integrate harmoniously and discreetly into the existing infrastructure, but would still be visible enough to discourage potential offenders. The previous analog surveillance system had finally reached the limits of its technical capabilities, and needed a comprehensive, yet cost-efficient upgrade with modern, powerful camera and video components. SL's final choice of components for a digital camera/video management system was driven by the need for premium image quality, as provided by Basler's IP cameras. SL provides regional public bus transport in and around the city of Lubeck, and the ferry service between Lubeck and Travemunde, Germany. Passenger safety is a major concern for the company during the bus ride itself, but also in the waiting times at and around the terminal facilities, before bus departures or after arrival. With the new IP cameras, users can specifically select the areas of interest. At the Lubeck bus terminal, all private areas and staff are protected from the cameras’ view. Data protection officials and SL’s Works Council were consulted to approve the areas to be monitored and the maximum storage time of all recorded image data.

Safe City Program in Ukraine Managed by AxxonSoft The idea to create a safe city video surveillance system occurred to top law enforcement in Donetsk, a city in Eastern Ukraine, in 2005. Viktor Dubovik, head of the Donetsk office of the Internal Affairs Ministry, promoted the project alongside Vladimir Semibratsky, technical coordinator and originator of the project. The office conducted an analysis of the available software and hardware solutions, gauging the difficulty of establishing such a system in the city. Two key requirements drove the project: laying of fiber-optic lines to be owned directly by the Donetsk office of the Internal Affairs Ministry, and use of the video management capabilities of the Axxon software platform to store video and distribute it to operator monitors. The Safe City project blossomed to 800 cameras in different public gathering areas. Video servers were housed predominantly at the Police Quick Reaction Center and in the police room at the Musical Park of Culture and Rest; the latter received video from the Donbass Arena and adjacent park areas, with about 200 cameras in all. In years of operation and handling massive sporting events, Donetsk's Safe City project has made the possibility of an integrated safety system monitoring all key locations in a major city into a reality.

T

here are many factors that are fueling the migration from DVR to NVR, for example, demands for HD, the maturation of IP-based solutions, cheaper and larger HDD storage, “unlimited” NVR channel restrictions, and remote surveillance. The main drivers; however, are price and standardization. “Affordable IP products from major manufacturers have helped to accelerate the migration as it quickly becomes a lower cost option to install IP cameras where an existing network infrastructure exists,”said Tim Biddulph, IP Product Manager for Europe at Samsung Techwin. “The main driver behind the migration from DVR to NVR is standardization. The vast majority of new buildings utilize a structured cabling system designed to support all the systems within, from telephones to building management. It is only logical that security systems should also use the same infrastructure.” “New projects (as well as upgrade projects) in the EMEA region are gradually moving to IP, while in the Americas, government and enterprise sectors have already adopted to IP solutions. However, some developing countries in the APAC region are still using analog solutions. In general, all market sectors are moving towards

IP solutions, which is great news for the NVR market,” shared Evelyn Kao, Product Manager at QNAP Systems. “While larger projects are demanding network solutions of some sort, analog is still the domain of the small installations or home market. However, with the advent of network home cameras and cloud solutions, even the small domestic solution is starting to go IP,” added Biddulph. “Some folks prefer an HD solution with one or two different camera models to fulfill the needs of an entire site, perhaps looking at cost of ownership and simplicity of design over a more elegant solution. This is a shift away from some of the more complicated system designs of the past, using HD resolution as an overall quality upgrade rather than a design tool.” “ Wo r l d w i d e N V R s a l e s w i l l certainly expand. Amongst all the regions, Asia's migration to IP systems is remarkable and such a trend will reinforce the growing number of NVR sales,” noted Alex Iida, Senior Manager of Visual Security Solutions for APAC at Sony Electronics. In addition, a recent take up of NVRs in SMB as well as home security verticals has been observed. The key drivers are low prices and easy installation and operation.

Colin Wang, NVR Product Manager, Dahua Technology

“NVRs are starting to be used in more scenarios, especially with the launch of 4 and 16 channel units that look and feel much like analog DVRs. With a monitor output and DVD writer, these NVRs make IP solutions easier for smaller installers and operators. It is now not uncommon to see 4 channel HD solutions in small high value retail installations,” said Biddulph. Another factor is PoE enabled NVRs that allow for plug-and-play. “We are the first manufacturer to develop and successfully implement PoE NVRs; the plug-and-play function makes everything much easier. These PoE NVRs proved to be very popular with the SMB and DIY market,” said Colin Wang, NVR Product Manager at Dahua.

Comparing Apples to Oranges

NVRs are basically customized servers that are built for the purpose of handling IP camera systems, and usually operate on Windows or Linux. These days, NVRs are rack mountable and are even available in one rack unit sizes. Many NVRs are open platform to facilitate maximum flexibility and scalability, which is especially useful when deploying large or enterprise solutions.

• PoE and wireless compatibilities enable installation in hard-to-wire environments • Future-proof investments Many of the embedded NVRs’ functions bear resemblance to their DVR predecessors. In addition, many NVRs’ GUIs are exactly the same as DVRs, so switching from DVRs to NVRs does not put any unnecessary burden on users as they do not need to change their usual routine — no additional training is required. For smaller installations, 16 channels and under, only basic IT knowledge is required. With PC-based NVRs, the number of channels is “unlimited,” and even more convincing is the VMS providers who offer free software that is preinstalled in their NVRs. For even smaller channels, such as 8 or 4 channels, one can opt for a PC-based NVR approach by using a desktop PC and entry-level VMS; however this set up offers limited flexibility and functionality. “With the advent

of network home cameras and cloud solutions, even the small domestic solution is starting to go IP,” noted an industry expert. NVR Requirements:

Ease of use and installation is one of the trademarks of NVRs. Choosing the right equipment for storing digital recording can be quite a daunting task. Functions and features that a decent NVR should encompass are: flexible recording and playback capabilities, a user-friendly GUI, intelligent video motion detection, PTZ camera control, as well as an intuitive remote control unit.

DVR and NVR Use by Vertical

The original mass markets for 16 channel DVRs, such as grade schools, high schools, hospitals, banks, factories, gas stations, highway transportation, and others have been replaced by 32 channel NVRs.

The current NVR migration trend is also percolating into the original 4 channel and 8 channel DVR markets, such as the home security and retail sector. Large-scale projects, such as critical infrastructures and stadium, of course, have already adopted high channe NVRs. The two tables above show where embedded and PC-based DVRs and NVRs are currently being used.

ever increasing standard of available bandwidth and H.264 resolution, HD and megapixel IP cameras have been propelled into mainstream. However, it should be noted that some embedded NVRs do not support high resolution recording. Choosing an NVR that supports megapixel recording will help to future-proof your surveillance system.

Quick Review of DVR Shortcomings:

For added stability consider using a Linux OS, which for the most part is easy to modify and easily accepted by end users. In addition, Linux embedded NVRs are not only very stable, but also cost effective.

• DVRs do not support megapixel cameras and can only record a at maximum resolution of 720 X 576 pixels (PAL) • Run of the mill cables will not work: DVRs require high-capacity coaxial or fiber optic cables • I n DVR-based camera systems, camera functions are limited to only capturing images of intruders and sending images to the computer

NVR Considerations:

Megapixel Camera Support?

These days, megapixel resolution is not as much of a drain on bandwidth as it used to be, and thanks to the

Sending back faulty hardware through a manufacturer ’s return merchandise authorization (RMA) is costly and time consuming and often times frustrating too. For missioncritical applications, extra hardware expenditure must be allocated for spares in order to eliminate down time. Another option is to look for NVRs that are especially designed so that the video management program is preloaded in a DOM (disk on module) chip. This way, instead of shipping the whole machine back, only the small DOM chip needs to be replaced. “Our NVRs can be equipped with a power DOM, which contains NVR software and Linux OS, said Sara Lin, VP at Instek Digital.

Other Considerations: System Integrators

Perhaps choosing the right SI is just as important as deciding between DVRs and NVRs. Common belief is that SIs with IT background have a

distinct advantage over SIs without sufficient IT background, for they are thought to be able to offer better service and support. Their network savviness allows them to offer customers shorter lead times. “Many SIs are the platform developer and provider, and because they have more experience in platform development many times they can meet customer’s requirements in shorter time frame,” cited Colin Wang, NVR Product Manager at Dahua Technology. He added, “These days, manufacturers put more and more investment in software and services, transforming themselves from merely product providers to total solution providers.” More and more IT integrators have started to shift their focus to the video surveillance market. This development is correlated to lower margins in the IT industry. Experience will tell you that sufficient knowledge and experience in video surveillance is equally important. “We believe that SIs with CCTV background still dominate the market. For us, our R&D, FAE, and sales teams work closely with our partners (SIs) so that they fully understand the solution that they are selling,” shared Lin. Iida shared similar sentiments, “When choosing an SI for surveillance projects, it is important to look for a balanced level of knowledge with regards to surveillance systems. In addition, we believe offering better service and support are part of the value and identity of SIs.” To futureproof your video system investments, it is important to look for system integrators who possess both IT and security expertise.
