EDITOR’S NOTE

Security 50 Ranking Reflects Industry Consolidation

W

e are very proud to present the a&s Security 50 Ranking for 2016. The a&s editorial team have once again collected data from security suppliers to determine the candidates for the ranking of the top 50 companies, which either have the largest market share in the global market or the highest product shipment to its global partners. This year, unfortunately, Hanwha Techwin was not able to disclose its security revenue for 2015. Thus, we failed to see how the former Samsung Techwin company actually changed under the new leadership. Next year, we will probably see Tyco Security Products and Safran Identity & Security also change under the new ownership. What also happened this month is the strategic alliance of Bosch Security Systems and Sony. Bosch, instead of acquiring Sony, chose to partner with Sony in product development as well as sales and marketing activities, outside of Japan. This move, along with the frequent mergers and acquisitions, reflects the current challenges facing the security industry. Right now, the industry is entering the initial stages towards maturity in its product life cycle. a&s Security 50 demonstrates how the industry have proceeded through different product life cycle stages, as well as the ups and downs of the security industry over the past 13 years. It confirms that the global market still maintained its high investment toward security projects; however, price competition have accelerated the consolidation of the industry. Hikvision Digital Technology is replacing Western companies to become the actual world market leader in security. The world is now watching how the company will be able to grow further despite some current issues. What’s new to this year’s a&s Security 50 is the five new entrants to the ranking. They are relatively not as big in terms of product sales revenue; however, they have all acquired quite a unique position in the industry in order to drive organic growth over the past few years. a&s talked to their executives about the secrets for their recent success. In this special issue of a&s International, we have broken the Security 50 reports down into multiple subjects to provide a comprehensive analysis of this industry. Hope you enjoy it!

“The price of equipment has fallen quickly in recent years. One example of this is the average global price of a network video surveillance camera which fell from almost US$500 in 2010 to less than $130 in 2015. Chinese vendors have often been offering products at lower prices than their Western counterparts and have gained market share as a result.” “Top 50 Revamps Strategies for IoT,” p.28

This transaction would bring to Safran I&S further capacity to meet customers’ requirements at a time when security in the digital world and emerging needs for public security are major challenges. The complementarity of Safran I&S’ strengths with Oberthur Technologies would create a common, coherent and strong business combination to the benefit of employees. Bpifrance will take a stake and join the Board. Safran I&S recorded revenue of

approximately $1.7 billion in 2015 and employs 7,800 people in over 50 countries. The enterprise value is indicative of the quality of the asset and the ambition of the industrial project envisaged with Oberthur Technologies. The transaction would result in a pre-tax capital gain for Safran. The transaction will be submitted to the employee representative bodies and is subject to regulatory approval notably in Europe and in the United States. The transaction is expected to close during 2017.

FLIR AIMS TO STRENGTHEN IN MACHINE VISION WITH POINT GREY Point Grey is expected to further enhance FLIR’s strength in imaging solution field and broaden its customer base. BY Prasanth Aby Thomas

ith the acquisition of Point Grey Research, the thermal imaging products maker FLIR Systems aims to strengthen its position in the machine vision sector, bringing in more products that can reach a broader set of customers. Early in October, FLIR announced it had entered into definitive asset purchase agreement to acquire the business of Point Grey Research. This is the latest in a line of acquisitions that FLIR has entered into recently. Earlier, the company had bought ISD, DVTel and Lorex in an attempt to strengthen its presence in the visible camera segment. The acquisition of Point Grey, however, is different from the rest as its primary focal point will not be the security segment. In an exclusive interview with a&s, Shane Harrison, Senior VP of Corporate Development and Strategy at FLIR Systems, explained that the addition of the Point Grey business augments the company’s existing OEM cores and components business by adding a broad range of high-end visible spectrum cameras for use in industrial machine vision applications. “The business will become FLIR’s Integrated Imaging Solutions line of business operating within our OEM and Emerging segment,” said Harrison. “We see tremendous synergy between our collective technologies and we’ll continue to launch new products that drive growth for our position in the

machine vision sector.” The Richmond, Canada-based Point Grey develops advanced visible imaging cameras and solutions that are used in industrial automation systems, medical diagnostic equipment, intelligent traffic systems, military and defense products, and advanced mapping systems. The company is also a provider of solutions for the retail people counting market. FLIR sees this too as a major opportunity to take advantage of with its thermal technology. In addition to the new technologies this acquisition brings, there is also the question of how it all helps the customers. FLIR pointed out, in addition to expanding its portfolio, the acquisition could pave the way for new customers. “The addition of Point Grey effectively e xp a n d s F L I R’s technology and product suite so that we can provide solutions to a b ro a d e r s e t o f c u s t o m e r s ,” Harrison added. “We also expect to develop products based on each of our core technologies to attract new sets of customers. For example, FLIR’s thermal sensor technology, with its unique ability to remotely measure temperature, see through factory obscurants such as smoke and steam, and accurately detect and characterize human activity in retail settings, will help deliver new products and applications to existing Point Grey customer base. The combination creates countless opportunities for FLIR customers in both visible and thermal sectors.”

“The addition of Point Grey augments FLIR's existing OEM cores and components business.”

TRANSPORTATION

NEDAP ENSURES SMOOTH TRAFFIC FLOW IN SWEDEN

NOV 2016 ● www.asmag.com

The Port of Gothenburg in Sweden has created a new entrance for truck traffic called Port Entry with the aim of providing better reception and flow of traffic through the harbor. The new entry site will serve ID checks to trucks that are not pre-registered and provide clearance for them to go directly to

24

port terminals where all transported goods will be delivered or picked up. The parking management system by systems integrator Infracontrol made it easier for drivers to park. Nedap Mobility Solutions’ SENSIT was installed at the parking bays in combination with a dynamic sign to guide drivers

to an available parking bay. If a truck is parked longer than 30 minutes, the staff is informed via an app. The system consisted of wireless in-ground detection sensors in individual parking spaces. Simple setup features make it easy to move or add more signs and parking sites when needed. All user functions can be accessed via internet or mobile phone. This applies to both operational monitoring that triggers an alarm if something does not work and to set parameters.

EDUCATION

MILESTONE IP TECHNOLOGY DEPLOYED IN US SCHOOL

The Sands Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) in Texas, U.S., implemented a pure IP-based access control and video system to keep the main campus and gym secure at all times, as part of the school’s renovation and technology upgrade project in 2015. The core of the solution included Mobotix IP indoor and outdoor security cameras, ISONAS PowerNet IP reader-controllers integrated with Milestone System’s XProtect video management software (VMS), and a Milestone Husky M50 network video recorder (NVR). The Mobotix cameras enabled the district to deploy fewer cameras yet maintain extensive coverage of the school grounds. All the cameras record on motion detection only, as configured in the Milestone VMS to record video storage of at least 30 days. The school district integrated its VoIP telephony solution into the security system so when someone hits the intercom key on the Mobotix door station, they appear in the Milestone interface displayed on the administrator’s screen. The XProtect Smart Client manages the live video display and camera recordings while the ISONAS Crystal Matrix system handles the access control system.

INDIGOVISION ENHANCES SAFETY AT BRITISH AIRPORT

IndigoVision’s Control Center security management software was used to design a new, fully integrated control center for the Birmingham Airport in England. IndigoVision’s Control Center featured built-in counter flow analytics, consolidated resources and improved playback functionality that helped result in a downturn in accidents. The existing analog camera system that monitored over six distributed control rooms were centralized to one control center and upgraded to IP through the use of IndigoVision’s 9000 encoders. Since the initial installation, it has expanded to cover over 650 cameras, employing four generations of IndigoVision products, including the Ultra 2K and Ultra 5K cameras. ATEC Fire & Security, the project’s systems integrator, installed Guardlink which utilized the Control Center to manage as well as send and receive alarm input and output commands for fire detection, environmental monitoring, perimeter detection and baggage detection. The system’s Activity Controlled Frame Rate (ACR) and ACF+ technology helped reduce storage costs for bandwidth management. Analytics algorithms bring benefits in both live-monitored and incident review operations while SMART.core technology means that there is reduced latency when tracking objects.

SYNECTICS ENHANCES SECURITY FOR US CASINO

The Hollywood Casino Aurora in Illinois, U.S., has upgraded its surveillance system with an integrated solution from Synectics. Powered by Synectics’ Synergy command and control platform, the new system provides 24/7 surveillance. The system’s open platform architecture will allow the casino to gradually migrate from analog to IP-based technology. Utilizing Synectics’ H.264

cuts maintenance for the busy support staff. On the circuit itself, 40 PTZ cameras capture speeding vehicles at a crisp 60 frames per second — making it easy to identify cars clearly, even at night. A further five ruggedized cameras keep a watchful eye around the site. Choosing energy-efficient BRAVIA Professional Displays has dramatically reduced electrical power consumption. Sony’s PTZ cameras’ powerful optical zoom reveal exceptional close-up detail, making it easier to spot whether distant trails on the track are hazardous oil or just water. With the cameras’ on-board image stabilizer, pictures are crisp and vibration-free, even in windy conditions. encoders, high-quality footage from the site’s 500 plus analog cameras is converted to digital video. With Synergy, operators can then “live view,” control, record and review this footage on the IP monitor walls in the surveillance control room, and also set up customized alerts to automatically detect specific incident scenarios. The new system allows the casino to review multiple cameras in real time which makes incident investigation much faster. It is also an important management tool to analyze patterns in the casino and deploy the necessary staff for the situation. The multiple levels of failover protection, including Hot Swap and RAID redundancy for recorded footage, ensures the data will be there when further investigation is needed.

ConCerns on market Conditions as growth slows THE OVERALL VALUE OF PHYSICAL SECURITY PRODUCTS HAVE GONE UP, BUT A COMBINATION OF FACTORS, INCLUDING STRENGTHENING OF CHINESE MANUFACTURERS HAVE HURT GROWTH IN THE VIDEO SURVEILLANCE SECTOR. BY Allan McHale, Director, Memoori Business Intelligence

emoori’s 2016 Annual Report shows that the total value of world production of physical security products at factory gate prices was US$28.4 billion, an increase of 4.5 percent on 2015. Over the last five years the market has grown by a CAGR of 8.2 percent, showing a significant fall in growth over the last two years. Of this, the total sum of video surveillance products at nearly $15 billion takes a share of 53 percent, access control at $6.8 billion takes a 24 percent share and intruder alarms at $6.6 billion has a 23 percent share. Access control has maintained its growth of around 10 percent this year as it further penetrates the IP network business and moves into biometrics, identity management and wireless locking systems. This is the second consecutive year that it has turned in the highest rate of growth. The intruder systems business, the “father” of the physical security industry, has long since reached maturity but its increasing use of radar and thermal cameras have contributed to growth edging up to 3.5 percent in 2016. In the video surveillance market, growth fell for the second year to 4.2 percent despite the fact that growth in volume was well up, due to the major Chinese competitors making very significant reductions to their prices in Western markets.

this will therefore rise and physical security will benefit from this. In the commercial world the demand for more comprehensive connectivity across all three of the branches of physical security business and the business enterprise will grow aided by IoT technology. This will become evident during 2017 with a moderate acceleration of growth through the following four years. We forecast a CAGR of 5.7 percent over the five-year period 2016 - 2021. Not particularly optimistic considering that it managed to grow by a CAGR of 7.8 percent during an unstable period from the end of 2010 to today. But whilst growth in volume terms will be well over 10 percent there is little chance of sales revenues achieving much more than half of this whilst the major Chinese companies continue reducing their prices in order to win market share and boost volume. There are many technology drivers that are supporting growth in the market and those that are having most influence today include: VSaaS, ACaaS, identity management, biometrics, analytics and software platforms to bring about integration across all three physical security business. Wireless communications, thermal cameras and even HD analog cameras are curtailing the flow of IP cameras into the SME market.

REGIONAL DEVELOPMENTS

DISRUPTION BY CHINESE COMPANIES

In 2016, growth in demand for physical security equipment has been highest in Asia including China despite the fact that growth has declined. Growth has been much more modest in North America whilst Europe is at the bottom of the growth league table. Memoori’s forecast for the next five years to 2021 is based on world market trading conditions continuing to slowly improve with modest gains in GDP growth in the developed world. Terrorist activities are unlikely to be quelled during the next five years and government budgets to counter

However, the major issue at the moment for all the Western-based manufacturers and stakeholders in the video surveillance business is not the disruption caused by emerging technologies but the need to quickly find a business model to compete with and stem the tide of Chinese products. Most of the successful Western manufacturers of physical security equipment have focused on one sector of the business with some specializing in a limited number of verticals and making sure that they can offer an end-to-end solution.

This still works well in the access control and intruder alarm businesses, but is now coming under threat in the video surveillance sector as the two major Chinese video surveillance manufacturers, Hikvision Digital Technology and Dahua Technology go for volume through driving down prices to meet the needs of commoditization and ensure their long-term future. Based on their protected home market and copious financial backing from the Chinese government, they have been able to pursue this strategy and have now successfully penetrated North America and parts of Europe, where they are rapidly winning market share. They now respectively hold the number one and two positions in the video surveillance market and there is no sign that this strategy will not continue to gain market share. When we published our first report on physical security in 2009 neither of these companies were considered as serious contenders in the international market place, only being formed in 2001. Hikvision listed on the SME board of the China Shenzhen Stock Exchange in May 2010 and now has a market capitalization of more than $20 billion, has a staff of over 18,000 and operates right across the globe. Both of these companies have specialized in video surveillance and are by far the largest two companies in the world, and until more recently did not have products at the leading edge in the high growth IP Network camera business. So how will Western video surveillance manufacturers redefine their business models to meet this challenge? Will the majors such as Axis, Avigilon, Bosch, Panasonic and Samsung reduce their margins to build up volume to compete with the Chinese and the longer term needs of commoditization or decide that they should invest more in innovative products that offer a better Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) metric? Price is not the king across all segments of the market and neither does TCO meet all the buyers’

“IN 2016 GROWTH IN VIDEO SURVEILLANCE PRODUCTS ACHIEVED 4.2 PERCENT, ACCESS CONTROL 10 PERCENT AND INTRUDER ALARMS 3.5 PERCENT. GROWTH IN THE VIDEO SURVEILLANCE MARKET HAS FALLEN FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR AND NOW IS LESS THAN HALF THE CAGR IT ACHIEVED IN THE PREVIOUS THREE YEARS.” requirements. Most of the Western companies mentioned above will struggle to reach the $1000 million revenue mark unless they either bring their margins in line with the Chinese competitors to win more share or deliver more innovative products that offer a better TCO metric. We suspect that they will go for the latter and combine this by achieving scale through merger and acquisitions.

NEED TO FIND A WINNING STRATEGY Under these circumstances you would have expected Western manufacturers to have seen this problem coming and have been more aggressive in the acquisition of video surveillance manufacturers in order to increase volume and benefit from the inevitable growth of commoditization of video cameras. But this has not yet happened on a scale to make much difference. A further retreat into specialization is not a particularly desirable solution and is likely to force companies that go down this route to eventually become system suppliers. However, with the growth of the IoT, this could be a strategy worth pursuing for some and let the product manufacturers fight on price and lower margins.

This has been taken from the eighth edition of Memoori’s Annual Report “The Physical Security Business 2016 to 2021”.

Looking at the list of fastest-growing companies in 2015 we can see there isn't necessarily a correlation between a company's total revenue and revenue growth. Infinova, for example, ranks No. 13 on the Security 50 main list yet has garnered the top spot on the growth list, registering a whopping 85.1 percent increase in sales enabled by its wider selection of products after its acquisitions of March Networks in 2012 and Swann in 2014. Safran Identity & Security, which ranks No. 5 on the main list and has recently entered into an agreement to be sold to Advent International, grew 23.7 percent last year, ranking No. 11. While the top 10 fastest growing companies are mostly familiar faces, one company stands out: Digital Barriers, a wireless solutions provider, is a first timer to Security 50. While it ranked No. 48 on the main list, it took the No. 2 spot in terms of sales growth thanks in part to its strong relationship with the US government, who relies on Digital Barriers solutions for border security, law enforcement and defense, among others.

NOV 2016 ● www.asmag.com

A more consistent pattern is found in ASSA ABLOY, which ranks No. 6 in total sales and No. 9 in terms of growth at 26.3 percent, thanks to an overall growing access control industry amid a migration to IP. The vision and security systems sub-segment under the TKH Group saw growth of 59.8 percent, ranking No. 3, contributed partially by its acquisition of the Commend Group and an increase in overseas revenue due to international projects. Avigilon ranks No. 6 on the growth list with sales increase of 36.1 percent underpinned by the firm’s growth strategy that solidifies the firm’s presence in North America and EMEA and expands its sales reach to markets like APAC and LATAM. One point that most of the high-growth companies on the list share in common is their efforts to push their end-to-end video surveillance solution business. By 40

offering end-to-end solutions, companies can offer a total package to integrators, who can save on upfront purchasing cost and achieve even further savings in the product’s lifecycle through repairs and maintenance from one single source. Infinova, for example, offers cameras on the front and NVRs on the back, as well as the software that manages the video altogether. On top of that the firm also has fiber optics solutions to transmit video, audio and data with the ability to carry 128 channels of video over a single fiber. IDIS, which ranks No. 10 on the growth list, aims to be a total solutions provider focused on the mid- to high-end markets with its extensive range of cameras, NVRs, network accessories combined with software that manages it all. Avigilon, which has been targeting the mid- to high segments of the market, is now focusing on the entry level, too, providing complete solutions to users. “Avigilon has long been known for having exceptional quality products targeting the mid- to upper tier of the market and ranging in customer sizes from the small to medium business (SMB) customers up to the enterprise size customers,” said Darren Seed, VP of Capital Markets and Communications at Avigilon. “We launched a pricing adjustment in Q2 focusing on our H3 camera line and NVR2s to expand our addressable market and target the entry level of the industry. This was very well received by the marketplace and, more recently, we announced a new line of cameras called the H4 SL camera line. The H4 SL is targeted more at the entry-level market, so it wasn't until 2016 that we began to really invest in the entry-level market place. For our systems integrators and ultimately the end user, we provide a wide variety of different solutions, because truly, Avigilon is a solutions provider. A camera by itself is just a paper weight, but Avigilon sells the entire solution.” Different from most of the companies growing their end-to-end approach, Milestone Systems chose to stick with its software focus. It reported a 32 percent revenue growth in 2015, on the back of its open platform technology as well as a solid network of partners. With competition becoming fiercer than ever, many companies are looking beyond traditional security applications to sustain growth. Hi Sharp, for example, has entered into various niche applications such as car safety, where users can

Industry report

get complete oversight of their fleet operations with onboard cameras and mobile DVRs. “In the past, the revenue from our security business supported our car safety business. Now, the situation has reversed,” said Jerry Chiang, President of Hi Sharp. “You’ve got to have a reputation in security before you move into car safety. For Taiwan security players who also have expertise in car safety for large-size vehicles, Hi Sharp is pretty much unrivaled.” The two Chinese video solutions giants, Hikvision Digital Technology and Dahua Technology, had more consistent rankings both in total revenue and revenue growth. Hikvision, emerging now as the No. 1 company on Security 50, ranks No. 4 on the growth list. Dahua ranks No. 4 in terms of total revenue and No. 5 in sales growth. In summary, the security landscape has become more competitive than ever, making it harder for players to sustain revenue growth. Only by providing customers value and the kind of integrated solutions that they need can security companies win out amid the competition. This is demonstrated by some of the fastest-growing companies on Security 50 this year.

xis Communications, a pioneer and leader in network video solutions, continued to register double-digit growth last year despite increased market competition. While video still constitutes the company’s core business, Axis has expanded its portfolio beyond video to include network-based access control, intercoms and horn speakers, delivering integrated solutions. The benefits include helping integrators to get complete packages from one supplier and providing additional values for users in different verticals. “WE SEE A For example, in a factory setting where HIGHER DEMAND all security systems are converged on the FOR INTEGRATED network, Axis can offer thermal cameras SECURITY that detect suspicious individuals at the perimeters. Then, the PA system would SOLUTIONS broadcast a message that tells the intruder – AN AREA to go away. For known staff, suppliers or WHERE WE ARE contractors, they can speak through the IP STRENGTHENING intercom to the operators inside, and staff with employee badges can pass through OUR POSITION.” the gate through the access control system. “So it’s perimeter detection, audio that you can add, the door station, and the access control — instead of only the camera,” said Edwin Roobol, Regional Director for Middle Europe at Axis Communications. Ray Mauritsson, President and CEO of Axis Communications, added: “We see a higher demand for integrated security solutions — an area where we are strengthening our position. For instance, in 2016 we have made three acquisitions (2N, Citilog and Cognimatics) in order to develop and broaden our solution offering. That drives our new business efforts and R&D to focus on solutions that create a greater value for our end customers.” With Axis acquired by Canon nearly two years ago, the synergy of the merger has increasingly played out. “Canon’s strengths are in optics and the patents that they have, and their efficiency and production capacity. Those are the areas where we are identifying potential benefits and collaboration,” Roobol said. Earlier, Axis rolled out a camera combining its own technology as well as Canon’s optics. At the same time, Axis has taken charge of the marketing and sales of Canon’s entire network video portfolio in EMEA and North America. “One benefit it has is that it has a lot of advantages that we don’t compete against each other, but collaborate, which I think makes a lot of sense,” Roobol said.

he physical security industry is going through one of the most complex periods in history. The global economic slowdown and the rise of Chinese manufacturers have wreaked havoc across the markets prompting many of the traditional companies to take decisive steps towards restructuring. According to a report from IHS this year, the total value of video surveillance sales have gone down, not because of lower units shipped, but because of price erosion. Security companies, on their part, are looking at several options to overcome these challenges. Some have opted to do mergers and acquisitions, others expanded their products outside their traditional zones of expertise. Certain companies have given into the lower production costs of Chinese manufacturing industry and taken the route of outsourcing manufacturing. In this article, we talk to several major security companies to get their views on the current market conditions and industry trends.

f there is one company that has seen some significant changes in its product portfolio over the past few years, it’s the thermal camera maker FLIR Systems. This is mainly due to a series of acquisitions that the company has engaged in lately. This year, it was DVTEL. The company’s surveillance revenue was down 3.3 percent in the year 2015, mainly due to continued reductions in demand from US government-funded customers and decreases in airborne and integrated system product line revenues. However, the security division more than made up for it with an increase of 26.5 percent in revenue mainly due to increased deliveries across all product families. “With the new price position and product range, we’re sort of addressing the lower market as well with shorter range as well,” said David Montague, Security Sales Director for EMEA at FLIR Systems. “There’s an element of business in thermal imaging that is being commoditized, people are just taking the thermal imaging from their

This is one of the complexities of the security business. It is why there will only be a handful of companies that are able to handle the communication in global access protocols.” “In Asia-Pacific, we acquired three companies: Milre, number two in electronic security in South Korea as well as FSH and Brio in Australia,” said Petratis. “We have been in the access control business for several decades with our global brands. Our master brands now include Schlage, LCN, Von Duprin, SimonsVoss and Interflex. We are a global company — number two in the world.” “When you think of technology, think of software, firmware, miniaturization, battery life and mechanical applications. These can take us to different geographies and markets. That is how we think about it. One of the things that is important to Allegion is our portfolio of brands, which bring solutions to specific verticals through these technologies. Little over a year ago, the company acquired SimonsVoss. Together with other acquisitions, the company is able to make access control solutions that are smaller and more intelligent that could be a driver in the connected world.

“One of Allegion’s main focuses is the convergence of mechanical and electronic solutions,” Petratis said. “SimonsVoss is a strong brand that brings technology, long battery life and the miniaturization of products — innovations that greatly benefit our customers and are centered around that convergence.” The company, in its obvious attempts to reach for a bigger market share, is planning to expand in Europe and across other markets. It believes that there is a strong opportunity in Europe as electronics become increasingly integrated with mechanical systems. The company added it differentiates itself from others through its historical installation base and open protocols. “We use open protocols as we want our devices to be able to communicate with building management systems, access control systems, or provide to the customers our own system,” Petratis said. “If you go into an Apple store, you will find our locks. Utilizing IoT technology, we are a part of Apple HomeKit. Our growth, our profitability and our innovation are our drivers for the company and of course our people.”

distributors going away and storing them. It is not project-based, it is more commodity-based.” Its business strategies, having bought several security companies, would look as leaning more towards becoming an end-to-end solutions provider. While this assumption could be valid, John Distelzweig, VP and GM for Security at FLIR Systems, pointed out that the company still remains completely compliant to the open architecture. “We remain completely open, so our cameras are ONVIF and we maintain certifications with the other VMSes and we will never abandon that approach. I think it is critical in the industry to maintain open and compatibility on both sides,” Distelzweig said. “So our VMSes, we integrate many manufacturers’ cameras and our cameras are compatible with

many VMSes. I wouldn’t want to put ourselves in a category, where we are more or less a closed system, that’s not our strategy at all, but we do believe that the future for the industry and the power comes from having control of all the pieces and being able to deliver additional features and additional values which are significantly more challenging to deliver when you put a system together from many different manufacturers.” “I see our products work not vertically more horizontally to impress all those applications,” Montague said. “Having said that, since we acquired DVTEL, the VMS solutions sometimes do address specific needs. For example, if you’re going into retail, you might want to know how many people came. There’s specific software applications you can address to different verticals.”

INNOVAT COMPANI HAVE THE EDGE NOV 2016 ● www.asmag.com

While familiar faces sweep across this year’s Security 50 list, a few fresh new faces have appeared. These include ACTi, Digital Barriers, AxxonSoft, Costar Technologies and Identiv. ACTi began as a traditional video surveillance manufacturer but has waded into the field of analytics to add more value to customers in, for example, retail. AxxonSoft is a software-driven company who provides full integration with other systems such as access control and fire alarms and offers full technical support free-of-charge. Digital Barriers, which made the No. 2 spot on the Security 50 highest-growth list, found its success in special, niche applications such as border control and law enforcement with its cutting-edge wireless video streaming technology. Costar, meanwhile, is known for its ruggedized, hardened video equipment also deployed quite often in government, military projects. Finally, Identiv offers access control and identity management solutions for the government, building on the expertise it acquired from the purchase of Hirsch.

Indeed, with the security industry becoming more competitive than ever, finding niche segments and offering solutions that users in those niches look for is one way to remain viable, and ultimately sustainable, in this business landscape, and these new entrants have demonstrated how they’ve used this approach to their advantage.

ACTI FINDS ITS SuCCESS AND VAluE IN DATA ACTi at first focused on traditional security applications, but in the midst of a more competitive business landscape, it changed its strategy to provide business intelligence service to users.

A

CTi, a new entrant to Security 50, is a pioneer in IP video solutions. Founded in 2003, the company at first focused on traditional security applications, but in the midst of a more competitive business landscape, it changed its strategy to provide business intelligence service to users. “When we first founded this company we adopted the name ACTi which stands for Applied Content Technology Innovation, reflecting our original vision of providing intelligence and value,” said Juber Chu, CEO of ACTi. “Our main objective of providing service and contents was thinkable, but the technology, for example cloud computing and data analytics, was not ready yet at that moment. That is why we had to begin with security.” Now, technologies such as IoT and cloud computing are beginning to take shape. This prompted the

company to change its course in 2010 to become a service provider, building on its strength in big data analytics. At the center of AC Ti’s various solutions is data generated by cameras as well as other devices. The data can then be processed Juber Chu, CEO, ACTi and analyzed by AC Ti’s analytics software, which Chu calls “robots.” Earlier this year, ACTi formed a strategic partnership with Microsoft Azure Taiwan whose cloud technologies will be used to deliver ACTi’s analytics to customers, who can rent it for a monthly fee. Because the data from every device is connected to the cloud, depending on its robots, ACTi can provide more specific services tailored for different users, applications and purposes. According to Chu, the company can help users across verticals in two primary ways in addition to security: operational management and business intelligence. For example, to help the end user understand more about their clients in retail, ACTi’s solution entails a people counting camera that counts the number of customers, transmits that data to the cloud, and presents it to the user regardless of the device he used. The user can then deploy resources or adjust staff accordingly. ACTi also has a solution that automatically provides sales service and support without relying on regular sales forces. The user can scan the business card of a customer, and the image will then be converted to text and data which can then be analyzed in the cloud, enabling the user to know whether that customer is existing or new, what his company does, and even the information and tools that he may need to succeed in his business. Further, the company recently formed a partnership with Japanese office solutions provider Ricoh, which can leverage ACTi’s cloud-based analytics and business intelligence to provide an even more comprehensive service to its customers. In order to efficiently communicate to end users, ACTi has built a web portal that provides video in different languages. End users can watch the video and quickly get the ideas and benefits of using ACTi’s services from the website. Their global sales teams can also easily acquire many sales tools to approach their customers and deliver the right message to them. Indeed, rather than just offering video equipment that has become more and more commoditized in a fiercely competitive market, leveraging new technologies such as IoT and data analytics to bring more value and benefits to users is the inevitable way to succeed. ACTi has succeeded in this regard and serves as an example for its peers to follow.

1: The Need for More Powerful IlluMINaTIoN High MP and 4K+ Cameras

The Future of

Low Light Surveillance Illumination plays a key role in security applications to guarantee high quality images, even under challenging light conditions. The latest advances in camera technology are changing the way installers are designing lighting for intelligent video surveillance systems. BY David Lambert, Managing Director (Joint), Raytec

NOV 2016 ● www.asmag.com

chieving high performance images at night is one of the greatest priorities of any video surveillance system. Under the cover of darkness, there is greater risk of crime, but it is also the most difficult condition for cameras to operate in. This is where lighting becomes essential. Of course, surveillance technology is evolving. Cameras are becoming smarter and more efficient than ever, and lighting needs to adapt to support the latest camera trends. The latest trends in higher megapixel, 4K+, multi-sensor and low-light cameras, along with a greater adoption of video analytics, are fundamentally changing the way we illuminate nighttime scenes. Broadly speaking, the latest advances in camera technology can be grouped into three main demands on LED lighting — to produce the best surveillance images and system performance at night. These are: • More powerful illumination • Intelligent networked illumination • Reduced cost of illumination This article will explore the reasons for these three trends in LED lighting, and an emerging fourth trend — improved data for specifiers.

66

Over the last few years, we’ve seen a steady rise in users demanding more detail from their surveillance images at night. High megapixel and multi-sensor cameras are being used to provide evidential detail, not just an overview of a scene. This represents a big leap forward in image quality for the security industry. But more pixels require more light. High megapixel and 4K cameras need professional lighting to enable the higher resolutions that they are capable of —especially at night. Without dedicated lighting, their performance will degrade back to noisy, lower resolution images. We can see this in the smart phone industry. The latest generation of smart phones, from the iPhone 7 to the Samsung Galaxy S7, settle on a camera sweet spot of around 12 megapixels. Of particular interest is the Samsung Galaxy S6, which boasted 16 megapixels. But the newer S7 model reduced that to 12 megapixels to promote improved low light performance. So always remember, all things being equal, the higher the resolution the more light is needed. One of the most powerful features of high megapixel cameras is their ability to digitally zoom into an image to extract more details from a scene. But when you zoom, both the high quality pixels and noise in the image is magnified. High megapixel and 4K+ cameras demand more powerful illumination both to improve their overall performance and to empower digital zoom at night. To respond to the needs of high megapixel cameras, modern illuminators will have to guarantee higher levels of light on scene. Raytec measures the light output of all of our LED illuminators to calculate maximum distances based on exact light levels on scene — a standard practice followed by most reputable manufacturers. Every Raytec illuminator adheres to the “POWERS standard” and delivers a minimum lighting power of 0.35µW/cm2 (infra-red) and 3 lux (white-light) at its maximum quoted distance; high illumination levels to service high performance cameras. Illuminating

any scene to this level will allow the camera to capture highly detailed images and achieve subject identification by empowering digital zoom.

Multi-Sensor Cameras and Large Area Surveillance The increased use of multi-sensor cameras also creates a demand for more powerful illumination. With multi-sensor cameras, huge areas can be monitored by stitching together multiple images, so that the end user can deploy fewer cameras to save on installation costs. A multi-sensor megapixel camera can cover the whole scene effectively and its digital zoom enables investigation of areas of interest. The challenge from a lighting perspective is that huge areas need to be illuminated from a single location — close to the camera. When you are replacing multiple cameras with one camera and one camera location, then multiple illuminators also need to be replaced by one illuminator — not only to cover the whole scene but also to make good financial sense! So in this instance, the lighting needs to be both powerful and span an incredibly wide area, covering the entire width and depth of the scene. But crucially, it needs to deliver a consistently high level of light throughout the whole area, so that the images are of the best quality wherever they are captured in the scene — near or far. The solution is high power 180° lighting designed to cover the entire camera view. As an example, the latest Raytec Panoramic Ultra products illuminate up to 150 meters at a 180° angle from a single illuminator so that multisensor cameras never miss an event at night. The best solutions should use a highly elliptical beam which shapes the light to match the needs of the camera system. At Raytec, we typically recommend a 180° horizontal x 10° vertical beam for wide angle applications to make sure the full scene is illuminated to its maximum distance without wasting any light — either into the sky as light spill, or onto the foreground as overexposure.

2: NeTworked INTellIgeNT IlluMINaTIoN IP Lighting for Intelligent Systems Many of today’s latest camera trends are IP-based. IP video surveillance systems allow end

David Lambert, Managing Director (Joint), Raytec

users to monitor their sites and respond dynamically to any event, at any time. When designing lighting for intelligent IP systems, it is important that your lighting provides this same level of control and interactivity. The latest developments in network illuminators, such as Raytec’s VARIO2 IP PoE series, offer the most flexible solutions for high performance nighttime surveillance. Network illuminators can be operated (a) manually, through a user-friendly GUI that allows operators to respond to real-time events and adjust lighting levels to fine-tune image quality or (b) automatically, responding to alarms or triggers from other devices on the network. Illuminators can also be controlled individually, or a group of illuminators can be controlled together to improve operational efficiency on site. Today, the latest IP lighting for video surveillance can be fully integrated into an IP security system and communicate directly with VMS, BMS, IP cameras or other devices on the network. IP lighting can both trigger and be triggered by any device on the network. IP lighting allows illumination to become smarter and more dynamic than ever before. It can deliver an intelligent, situation-dependent response to achieve the highest levels of safety and security at all times.
