ON THE COVER The wood for the buildings fashioned at Old Kentish Barns, featured on the front cover of this issue, are sourced from a sawmill found in the Medieval Pale of the Ashdown Forest. Once famous for its water mills producing timber and flour during the 1840s, these went into decline under the threat of imports and modern steam power and by the 1980s most were submerged under the weight of bureaucracy and land value. Fortunately some small, family-owned mills survived. Due to a renewed interest in timber products, Heavegate Sawmill continued, owing its success to dedicated craftsmen creating superior timber frames. Constructed from locally grown English oak, each building has individual attention paid to it using both modern and traditional methods. An excellent example of this is the ever popular two bay cart barn boasting over fifty mortise and tenon joints, individual tie beams and the benefit of natural character. Its sturdy Deal roof which, packed with rafters, creates a support strong enough for any tile the structure may receive. One Bay Barns - Compact yet highly versatile, one-bay barns are often used as garages but can easily be adapted for a variety of additional uses. Many clients like to maximise storage space by building a platform in the roof space. Two Bay Barns - These are the most popular barns. The bays can be used for workshops, storage, boatsheds, offices, as well as garages - in any combination. With a useable floor area just under 30 square metres, these two-bay barns do not normally require planning permission. Three and Four Bay Barns - These substantial structures provide a range of outbuildings under one roof. In conjunction with a corner unit and other modules, they can be used to form handsome courtyard complexes, designed to suit individual needs. Large Frames - A useful alternative to domestic construction are our large frames. These are not only very attractive but are also useful for accommodation, office space and leisure activities.
Other Structures - Many types of buildings and structures can be erected in your garden or on the land around your house without the need to apply for planning permission. These include sheds, garages, greenhouses, accommodation for pets and domestic animals, summerhouses, sauna cabins and enclosures (including tennis courts). If you are considering the erection of a timber structure this year it would be wise to contact this company to gather further information and take heed of their expert advice. Get in touch with Old Kentish Barns, based in Crowborough on 01892 740522 or 07817748279.

A Grade II listed office property on the banks of the River Thames in Berkshire has sold for over the asking price within 24 hours of being advertised. The Grotto, a Georgian mansion at Lower Basildon, just south of Goring Gap, first came onto the market through Savills Development team in Oxford in 2006. Having been under offer, but failing to exchange on three separate occasions over the next 18 months, the site was re-launched in February 2008 with planning consent for change of use and offers in excess of £2,500,000 were invited. The property then sold in record time: it was advertised in Country Life Magazine on 28 February and exchanged the following day for well over the guide price. The Grotto was purchased by a private buyer who had admired the house from the train each day, and who subsequently paid the deposit without having a viewing or even received sales details. Jason Hill, director of development at Savills Oxford, said: “The mansion had been used as offices for over fifty years and was heavily institutionalised but it had great potential for conversion to a single country residence or a scheme of apartments. We understand that the new owner intends to restore the 18th century building to its former glory.” The Grotto, which is set within approximately 8.6 acres of parkland, was a family home until it was bought in 1953 by ILAM (the Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management), which subsequently became the charity ISPAL (the Institute for Sports, Parks and Leisure).

Situated in the popular and picturesque village of Chipstead is a most attractive property called Wisdoms. This timber framed house was originally built during the 17th Century using timbers of an earlier age. Later the property was divided into two small cottages before it was purchased in 1880 by a Mr Swithin James Wisdom. The house was then converted back to a single dwelling, refronted and a small shop added to the side, where he opened up the village butchers. The Wisdom family continued to trade until Charles Wisdom retired in 1964 however the property remained in the family until 1972, following the death of Edith aged 83. Many original features, from this era, can be found, such as the meat hooks in the ‘shop’ reception hall, external shutters to the sides, used to keep the building cool during the Summer months together with the Sausage Making Barn in the garden, now used as an Outside Dining Area. The property itself has a wealth of original features including exposed ceiling and wall timbers, Inglenook fireplaces, cast iron fireplaces and latch doors. Externally the property is truly enhanced by the beautiful landscaped gardens. As you stroll down the stone pathway through the different gardens, one could become lost in time, until perhaps you reach the ‘Millennium’ garden planted by the current owner. The path continues to a timber bridge, over a Mill Stream, leading to the former Orchard, where one can relax in the Gazebo and gaze across Chipstead Lake and the North Downs beyond. Jill Mitchenall, Director of the Sevenoaks Office commented: ‘Wisdoms is a beautiful home set in wonderful gardens in the heart of the village’. Listing And Conservation - By Roger Paine In John Osbourne’s play “The Entertainer” the eponymous ageing music hall comedian Archie Rice tells his audience, “Don’t clap too hard, it’s a very old building!” If he had been speaking in 2008 he might have added “…and it’s listed”. Listing now identifies the status of any old building which is believed to be worthy of retention, including old theatres. It applies equally to residential property. The system of listing was introduced in 1950 by the post-war Labour government although this was hardly a new concept as France had been classifying historic buildings for the previous hundred years. Today it is recognised that historic buildings are a precious asset. They play an influential part in this country’s architectural heritage and provide a sense of national and regional identity. English Heritage has the task of identifying and protecting this inheritance by recommending buildings for inclusion on the statutory list of buildings of ‘special architectural or historic interest’. This is currently compiled by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Buildings are classified as Grade I, II* or II to indicate their relative architectural or historic interest. Listing currently protects some half a million buildings of which over ninety percent are Grade II.
So how does listing affect the residential property market? Many estate agents acknowledge that although ‘old is gold’ owning a listed property does not now have quite the same cachet it once enjoyed. Listing adds to the overall appeal of a property and is official recognition of it’s special interest and quality but is unlikely to add materially to the value. Many present day purchasers who desire a character property feel that listing imposes too many restrictions on what they can do in the way of improvements. They do not want to spend time jumping through the bureaucratic hoops which planning and conservation regulations require. On the other hand, there are those who regard this as a challenge and regardless of how long the application, negotiation and, possibly, appeal process may take, are prepared to ensure their vision comes to fruition. This is as applicable to a grand Elizabethan manor house as it is to Victorian artisans’ cottages.
Buildings are listed by English Heritage in two ways. Firstly, it looks at individual buildings, hundreds of which are brought to their attention each year by members of the public. Without this interest many important buildings might be lost or damaged. Secondly, it assesses buildings by type and area, to bring the lists up-to-date by ensuring that the best buildings of a particular type are listed. A major public consultation exercise to discover which post-war buildings should be listed has also been held. This attracted enormous interest, and some controversy. Similar to that when viewers of the successful TV series “Restoration” were asked to nominate the property they felt would most benefit from being restored with money from the Heritage Lottery Fund. 21

Morocco – Emerging Market or Market Leader? Morocco is entering an extremely exciting and prosperous time in the years leading up to 2010. Investment opportunities, new developments and job creation are all part of the vision that King Mohammed VI and his Plan Azur 2010 has for the future of the country and the Moroccan public. Focusing on the tourism industry, Plan Azur 2010 was set into motion in 2001. The improvements being made, not only to recognized destinations in Morocco, such as Casablanca, Marrakech and Tangiers, but over all, have already interested wealthy foreign real estate investors such as Malcolm Forbes and Richard Branson. As a general and overall improvement project in Morocco, the Plan Azur 2010 has incorporated the upgrading of motorways and roads, the creation of marinas, high-speed trains, and most importantly, the development of six, modern and exclusive resorts. With resort development, has come an avalanche of interest from real estate investors who see these upgrades and new constructions as lucrative investment opportunities. The Mazagan Resort, located on the coast of the Atlantic, will be developed by the world known development company, Kerzner, famous for many successful projects, including the casino resort Sun City in South Africa. South Africa comes into the spotlight once again with the plans to include a Gary Player golf course at the Mogador Essaouira development. This resort is focused on the tourists that flock to Marrakech. A Belgian-Dutch Consortium will oversee this magnificent project. The other resorts that are being developed include Port Lixus, Mediterrania-Saidia, Taghazout and Plage Blanche. All these resorts will see a rise in accommodation availability and contribute to the estimated amount of 600 thousand new employment opportunities. Investing in Morocco and its growing tourism industry has many positive aspects that are rarely explored. Some of these sensible reasons to invest in the Moroccan property market and economy include: Low living costs, the rapidly growing property market, no inheritance tax is
required, for the first five years no annual property tax is requested, and there are seventy percent mortgages available. Investing in a market and country that is just seeing a boom in property development and tourism makes perfect sense for the future. Marrakech is truly the city of entertainment in Morocco. In the centre of Marrakech is a square, Djemaa el fna, which is the operating point for entertainers such as acrobats, drummers, dancers, pipe musicians, comedians and storytellers. There's plenty of choice for meals, including the Djemaa el Fna food stalls, many inexpensive caferestaurants and a number of up-market palace-restaurants that offer Morocco's traditional cuisine at its very best. Marrakech is Morocco's second largest city and its population continues to rise. It has a prosperous industrial area and is the most significant market and organizational centre of Southern Morocco. Marrakech does not have many historical monuments and buildings; its beauty lies in the atmosphere and the spectacular location. Marrakech, with the outstanding peaks of the Atlas Mountains expanding behind the city, has very warm humid summers and shimmering white snowy winters. Nicholas Feeney from Grosvenor Park International commented “There are some great opportunities in Marrakech for the property investor, none better in my opinion than the El Oasis Resort being built buy Jet Sakane. The property prices start from 60,000 euros and the investor can sign up for a 10% pa rent guarantee for up to 10 years. This is guaranteed by the bank and underwritten by an insurance company. This is a globally unique investment opportunity and to add capital growth at 20%pa, makes this a very sound investment If you would like more information on investing in Morocco then call Grosvenor Park International on 01323 647070

HISTORY
Sunken Treasure The HMS Sussex, £2.6 Billion Pound Recovery - By Roger Paine Britannia has not always ruled the waves. In 1690 an Anglo Dutch fleet suffered a heavy defeat by the French off the coast of Sussex at the Battle of Beachy Head. For a year afterwards the French reigned supreme in the Channel. In response, Parliament immediately authorised a major warship building programme. Twenty ships of 1,200 tons, 160 feet long, 80 guns and 500 crew, were ordered. One of these newly designed vessels was named HMS Sussex. On 27th December 1693 a huge fleet of 40 warships and 166 merchantmen gathered at Portsmouth. At the head of these ships commanded by Admiral Sir Francis Wheeler was the Sussex, launched ten months earlier. The admiral had been ordered to sail to the Mediterranean and restrict the spread of French influence in the region. He had also been given sealed orders to carry ten tons of gold and silver coins packed in iron chests as a blatant inducement to buy the loyalty of the Duke of Savoy and prevent him from entering into the war against France. Although official documents euphemistically recorded this bribe as “money for the use of the Fleet”, it represented, in total, about £1 million in cash. In today’s terms the money is estimated to be worth around £2.6 billion. On 19th February 1694, one night out of Gibraltar, a severe storm struck the fleet. A violent east wind, known as the ‘levante’, hit the Sussex with unprecedented force. In the darkness and with the ship heading for the rocky Spanish coast the captain tried to tack out of danger. But weighed down by the vast cargo of gold the Sussex ‘broached’ and, unable to stop the sea pouring through the open gun ports, sank. Except for two men, everyone onboard drowned. The bloated body of the admiral, reportedly clad in his nightshirt, was washed ashore at Gibraltar. For the next three centuries the tragedy remained largely forgotten. Until 1995 when a researcher walked into the offices of Odyssey Marine Exploration in Tampa, Florida and produced an intriguing letter written shortly after the sinking. It was from a French spy in Italy informing his government of the disaster. “The Admiral Ship of England…was lost in the storm. There was on the ship a million Piastres of which 800,000 were for the Duke of Savoy”. Until then the Sussex had no special place in maritime history. But Odyssey, one of the world’s foremost undersea explorers, hired researchers to comb archives around the world for clues about the ship’s cargo and its final resting place. By 1998, Odyssey had obtained sufficient information to start scouring 400 square miles of the Western Mediterranean in search of the wreck. After three years of investigating over four hundred likely targets, using bathymetric survey, side scan sonar “fish” which fly at a precise altitude over the bottom and send back acoustic sounds, and ROV’s (Remotely Operated Vehicles), all attention focused on “..a cannon site of some promise”. In the summer of 2001, Odyssey again returned to the wreck they had identified and recovered a 4ft long section of cannon all but rusted away. Everything now pointed to it being that of the Sussex lying 3,000 feet down on the seabed. Then, in what was an unprecedented move in the sometimes murky waters of undersea exploration, Odyssey sent the results of their findings to the Ministry of Defence in London. They also indicated the precious cargo could be recovered and returned to its legal owners, the British government. After prolonged negotiations, Odyssey finally agreed a strategy for excavating the wreck. This was the first time any government had entered into a licensing agreement with a commercial company for the 26
archaeological excavation of a sovereign warship. Details are included in official Treasury estimates and constitute an agreed formula for sharing the spoils. This means that Odyssey get 80% of the proceeds of the sale of coins and other marketable artefacts up to $45 million, 50% from $45 million to $500 million, and 40% in excess of $500 million. The British government gets the rest. But as with many archaeological excavations, controversy is never far away. The Council for British Archaeology has voiced “extreme concern” at the government’s cynical attitude to what has been described as an exercise in profiteering and argued that they had ignored the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage. In the House of Commons, 60 MP’s signed an early day motion condemning the agreement as treasure hunting. Then In January 2006, just as Odyssey’s excavation was about to commence, using the company’s 250 foot long deep-ocean archaeological platform ship ‘Odyssey Explorer’, it was stopped by the Spanish authorities, the Junta of Andulacia. Eventually, in March 2007, after fifteen months of often acrimonious legal battles, Spain finally gave her assent for the excavation to start. On the condition that Spanish archaeologists would also be involved to establish that the wreck was indeed that of the Sussex, and not a Spanish galleon. This approval, however, has since been rescinded as Odyssey had, in the meantime, begun the salvage of another shipwreck, under the name of the ‘Black Swan’ project, which has involved the removal of large quantities of coins and artefacts from the wreck which the Spanish believe to be in their territorial waters. An original scale model of the Sussex is in the US Naval Academy Museum at Annapolis, Maryland where it was bequeathed by a wealthy collector, Colonel Henry H Rogers. Still in perfect condition it was constructed by Robert Lee then Master Shipwright at Chatham, and is one of a unique collection of ship models which demonstrate the skill of seventeenth century English craftsmen. It belonged originally to Charles Sergison, successor to Samuel Pepys as Secretary to the Navy Board. Despite Odyssey’s assurances that the excavation of the HMS Sussex, the deepest ever undertaken in the annals of archaeology, “…will serve as a model in the management of underwater cultural resources”, the project to retrieve the cargo of the most valuable shipwreck in history remains in the balance. Out of the spotlight for hundreds of years, but thanks to a perfect storm and modern technology, the treasure ship Sussex could one day become a household name.

HISTORY
The Battle of Bossenden Wood by R. M. Kehoe
Asking people to name the last battle fought on British soil yields some interesting results but most get pretty close and come up with Culloden (1746). Ask them then, to name the last battle fought on English soil and eyes start to roll! Naseby (1645)? Bosworth (1485)? Some will get it spot on and answer Sedgemoor (1685) but will they actually be correct? Few will have heard of the Battle of Bossenden Wood (1838) near Canterbury, let alone know what it was all about and yet it was, arguably, the last time the British Army (or part of it anyway) fought in England. Set against a background of extreme rural deprivation and the unpopular Poor Laws, there came to Kent, in the spring of 1838, a deluded but charismatic Cornishman styling himself Sir William Courtenay; though in fact he was no aristocrat but a publican’s son called John Thom. Claiming to be the re-born Messiah, a Knight of Malta and wielding King Arthur’s sword “Excalibur”, Courtenay preached blood and thunder sermons, in which he exhorted villagers and landless peasants to follow him, rise up in arms and overthrow their oppressors. Courtenay promised his followers not only land, riches and a better life but also impregnability to bullets and cold steel; he himself, so he claimed, had been rendered immortal by God! Fearing riot and insurrection, a Boughton farmer called Curling asked Canterbury magistrates to send constables over to arrest Courtenay. Three were dispatched but one, a Constable Nicholas Mears was shot dead by Courtenay, who then officiated at a mass that he celebrated with his supporters near the village of Dunkirk.
The date was 31st May 1838. Word of the shooting was sent back to Canterbury and a company of the 45th (Nottinghamshire) Regiment, under a Captain Armstrong, was authorised to take Courtenay and his men, dead or alive, at their base at the edge of Bossenden Wood. Rejecting Captain Armstrong’s reading of the Riot Act and his call to surrender, Courtenay ordered his men to open fire on the troops, with the result that Lt. Henry Bennett and Constable George Catt were killed and a small number of the 45th wounded. The soldiers’ returning fire was as effective as it was conclusive, resulting in the death of Courtenay and nine of his men. Another twenty odd were wounded, or captured, with the remaining followers fleeing into the woods, followed by the vengeful troops with bayonets fixed.
Although the survivors of Courtenay’s “army” were brought to trial at Maidstone Assizes in August 1838 and some were sentenced to be hanged, none actually were. In fact, by the standards of the day, the guilty men were treated quite leniently, with short sentences and parole being given. Two men, however, were transported to Australia, one of whom had the last laugh by amassing a fortune in the goldfields of Victoria. Fearful of more uprisings, the authorities set about making improvements to the lot of agricultural workers, with the result that the villagers of Dunkirk benefited by having a new parish church and school built for them. They surely paid a mighty high price for such worthy facilities.
Courtenay’s body was taken to the nearby Red Lion Inn, Dunkirk, where an inquest was held and where (fearing resurrection!) his heart was removed and an armed guard deployed. Courtenay and the other fatalities were quietly interred on 5th June, with perhaps more respect than they deserved and lie buried somewhere in St Michael’s, Hernhill, churchyard. A commemorative board lists their names and ages; “Courtenay” being recorded more accurately as John Tom (38). Lt. Henry Bennett was buried with full military honours in Canterbury Cathedral and a large marble memorial dedicated to him can still be seen, set in to the wall of the north aisle. It is said that Lt. Bennett was the first army officer to die in the service of Queen Victoria.

The Ecovillage New To The Kent County Show For 2008!! The highlight of the county’s summer season is almost upon us – the Kent County Show. Exhibitors are already busy preparing their stands, but for one local marketing agency, there’s a whole new village to build before the start of the show on July 11th. The Kent Show is hosting the Ecovillage this year. The Ecovillage, brought together by new local marketing agency Sust, will be showcasing all the best in environmental and sustainable living in Kent. Vicky Whitlock, director of Sust says “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to create this village, we’re aiming to show how being eco friendly can cover all aspects of modern life; from building, heating and energy, waste management, transport, furnishings and food in an accesible and meaningful way.” Visitors will be able to see and experience the latest developments in environmental products, and speak to experts in green living. But it won’t be all worthy bean eating, there’s plenty of fun to be had being green as well! With almost 50 ‘Ecovillagers’ there really will be something to interest the whole family. Kids will love the Totally Wild bus from Howletts and Port Lympne which will be spreading the message of conservation and animal protection in a fun, interactive and informative way. Footprintfriends continue the theme: face painting is so last year, feet are where the fun’s at this year. Kids can get their feet painted to illustrate their concerns about the environment. Footprintfriends, featured in the Guardian (14 May 2008) is a social networking site for kids to share their passions for protecting our natural environment.
Whilst the kids get busy learning about conservation, parents can learn more about recycling and keeping costs down at the “Love food hate waste” campaign. A third of the food we buy ends up being thrown away. And it’s not all banana skins and teabags! The "Love Food, Hate Waste" campaign will be giving useful hints and tips on how to reduce the amount of food that we throw away, and how by doing some easy and practical things in the home we will benefit our purses and the environment. The Campaign for the Protection of Rural England and the Soil Association will also be raising awareness of their work.
carbon friendly transport mode, Kent Bikes will be displaying some of their vast range of bicycles. If all of that leaves a rumbling in the tummy, Simply Ice Cream, Riverford Veg Boxes and Chocalottalove will be on hand with a variety of delicious, wholesome and organic products to sample. With its diverse and interesting range of exhibitors and the strong ethos behind it provided by organisers Sust, the Ecovillage really will be the talking point of the Kent County Show this year.

Kent & East Sussex Railway "...Not very long ago, in the top left-hand corner of Wales, there was a railway. It wasn't a very long railway or a very important railway, but it was called The Merioneth and Llantisilly Rail Traction Company Limited, and it was all there was. And in a shed, in a siding at the end of the railway, lives the Locomotive of the Merioneth and Llantisilly Rail Traction Company Limited, which was a long name for a little engine so his friends just called him Ivor..." So began, in 1959, the first episode of the first series of a set of television films which were to become part of the mainstream of Children's television for the next thirty years by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin’s Smallfilms company. And this year the famous little Welsh engine is coming to the Kent & East Sussex Railway for the very first time. From Tuesday 5th to Thursday 6th August fond childhood memories can be re-lived over three fun-filled days of Ivor-themed activities for children of all ages. Puppet and magic shows, face painters and colouring activities, plus the chance to meet the memorable characters that populated the Ivor stories. Jones the Steam, Dai Station, Evans the Song, Mrs Porty and not forgetting Idris the dragon, will all be ‘in the top left-hand corner of Wales’, along with Ivor himself who will be blowing his very special whistle to make this an event to remember. Prices: £12 Adult, £7 Child (3 – 15 years), £11 Senior Citizen, £32 Family (2 adults & up to 3 children) to include all Ivor activities plus a Day Rover Ticket on the Railway. Hot Jazz At Big Sky One of the hottest events in the UK jazz calendar – the Big Sky Jazz Festival in Margate - is being staged at the Winter Gardens, the Piazza and other key venues around the popular seaside resort on July 25 and 27 and August 2. Some of Britain’s best jazz talents are lined up for this premier music fest – now in its fourth year – which has been organised by Margate Town Partnership with the support of Thanet District Council. The festival launches at the Winter Gardens on July 25 with Celebration of Voice featuring Barb Jungr with Jenny Carr on piano, Christine Tobin, Anita Wardell, Ian Shaw and the Phil Robson Quartet. Jungr’s hypnotic vocal style draws on sources as varied as Jacques Brel, Bob Dylan, Ray Davies and Elvis. With her winning combo of splendid voice, intelligence with a lyric and innate charm, it’s easy to see why she is the UK’s top song stylist. One of the strongest, most beguiling voices on the UK jazz scene, Tobin’s expressive style is firmly rooted in a story-telling tradition that mixes blues, folk and jazz – a territory occupied by such luminaries as Joni Mitchell, Cassandra Wilson and Nina Simone. She has just released her seventh album – Secret Life of a Girl – described by Lionel Shriver in the Guardian as “sexy, gutsy, bluesy and beautiful”. Winner of the prestigious BBC Jazz Awards in 2006, Wardell has been acclaimed for the unique artistry she brings to scat and be-pop, and rave reviews from peers and critics have confirmed her reputation as one of the UK’s great straightahead vocalists. On her current album, Kinda
Blue, she showcases her exceptional ability to take a song and make it her own. Named Best Jazz Vocalist at the BBC Jazz Awards of 2004 and 2007, Shaw is unquestionably the UK’s finest male jazz singer. His material ranges from Joni Mitchell to standards and contemporary classics, all performed in engagingly relaxed style. His new self-penned album Lifejacket is “a suite of stories recalling friendships, childhood dreams and dodgy Soho nights”. (Jazzwise March 2008). Guitarist Phil Robson is internationally regarded as a versatile and creative musician. Co-founder (with saxophonist Julian Siegel) of the ground-breaking group Partisans, he is also a composer of note, leading Six Strings and the Beat – a project for guitar trio and string quartet which premiered at the Vortex Jazz Club in London in 2007. Other gigs feature one of the giants of British jazz, Don Weller – possibly the greatest tenor saxophonist of our times; the versatile and eclectic Annie Whitehead; singer and songwriter Sarah Gillespie (Time Out intoned: “her mesmerising, acoustically-styled songs shimmer with a resonant beauty”); the Carol Grimes Band; Gilad Atzmon’s Orient House Ensemble; Stan Sulzmann and the John Parricelli Quartet; the Grand Union Band, and the Liam Noble Trio. The full festival programme detailing performers and venues will be announced shortly. For further information call Margate town Partnership on 01843 297350 or go to www.visitthanet.co.uk 35

Children Can Experience The Past At Chiddingstone Castle This August encampment with authentic cooking and weaponry will be at the castle throughout the event which runs from 11am to 4pm. Children will be able to make Stuart roses, create royal portraits and even make cardboard swords to take home. There’ll be pike training… with broom handles. (Pikes were Civil War weapons consisting of long poles with steel points on the end – cheap to make, easy to use and versatile). Naughty children can go in the stocks, too! For a taste of Victorian life, visit the castle on Thursday 14 August for a Victorian work day focused around the castle’s own 200-year-old working Victorian kitchen. There’ll be a chance to make bread and biscuits, and also to wash clothes… without a washing machine. Inside, an interactive history display introduces Charlie, the Victorian shoeshine boy, while outside will be traditional toys and games.
Youngsters can experience aspects of life in two particular periods in history at Chiddingstone Castle in Kent this summer. The Stuart period and Victorian life are highlighted on different activity days in August with things to make and take home as well as activities at the castle. On Thursday 7 August, and again on Thursday 21 August, the Stuart period is featured. This time, which followed the Tudor era, began with the first king of both England and Scotland, James I, and included the Civil War when King Charles I was executed. A living Stuart
The exhibitions at Chiddingstone Castle, which include Japanese and Egyptian artefacts as well as a rare collection of Stuart and Jacobite memorabilia, will be open to view as usual and make the Castle a great visit for a rainy day as well as a sunny one. Outside, large grounds including a lake offer ample picnicking opportunities and plenty of space for youngsters to run around and let off steam. There is also a family friendly café with inside and outside seating and a gift shop. For more information please visit www.chiddingstonecastle.org.uk or call 01892 870347.

EDUCATION
The Cream of Canterbury Top Cats A record 84 students at CATS Canterbury, the international sixth form college in New Dover Road; 77 have graduated having successfully completed their University Foundation Courses and others had taken A Levels. This year’s CATS students have creamed off places at 50 top UK Universities including: Aberdeen, Bath, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Goldsmiths London, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Queen Mary University (London), Sheffield and York. The University of Kent has as usual attracted CATS students. Hadiza Baba-Shehu from Nigeria has accepted a place to read law. Derek Sellen Head of English at CATS said: “We have had another outstanding year. Our students and staff have worked extremely hard together to achieve such a high level of passes on our Foundation year. The 2007-8 intake was our largest ever and next year already looks like beating this.” He added: “CATS’ examination successes are internationally famous and our students are attracted from all over the world. With our International Baccalaureate programme growing fast too, we will be filling our new facilities and be ready for the next phase in our expansion programme.” The graduation ceremony moved this year to larger facilities at the Gulbenkian Theatre at the University of Kent. Keynote speaker was Mark Johnson-Brown, Director of charitable organisation, Music for Change. He spoke of the mutual interest it had with CATS – both organisations being involved in bringing people together from different cultures using education as the catalyst. Graduation Day was not without its traditional top quality and enthusiastic input from the students. Highlights included blind tasting of authentic Japanese food and Saki; a performance by the CATS Canterbury Dance Club; a presentation on the Chinese Year of the Rat; songs from Russia, modern dance from Columbia and Rumania, a Portuguese love poem from Angola and a finale from West Africa with students in their very colourful native regional costumes.
Marie-Louise Banning, CATS Principal addressed the students from around the world including Belgium, Germany, Korea, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Paraguay, Russia and Sudan with passion talking on the importance of intercultural understanding in today’s world. Ms Banning also congratulated the students on their excellent work for others in the community and for local facilities including local beach and local woodland clearance, sponsoring a child in Brazil, fund raising for the Chinese earthquake disaster and work for the Lord Whisky Animal Sanctuary at Stelling Minnis. Parents from Europe, South America, Russia and Africa attended the ceremony. There was however a sad side to the occasion – the College’s two Vice Principals both retired – Bryan Lewis after 10 year’s service and David Wardle with 7years. The staff thanked them both for their tremendous input to the College and wished them a happy retirement.
Twenty Four Sussex Schools Turn Military For The Day Over four hundred Sussex students and 80 soldiers from 11 regiments can only mean one thing - Army Schools Challenge 2008. A day of military activities on Thursday 26th June at Worthing Rugby Football Club, awaits the students. Soldiers will mentor, train and support the students while they take part in a round robin of challenging and competitive activities. Split into their schools groups the mini soldiers will enjoy various Army based activities, including: · Navigating an Inflatable obstacle course · Target shooting · Laser clay pigeon shooting · Constructing signalling equipment to transmit messages to other team members · Gun Run · Combat stretcher race · Combat sports race Major Carol Miller, events organiser, said; "Army schools challenge is a five day event that takes place across the South East and Home Counties. The event, now in its sixth year, allows students to explore 44
and experience the military side of life. The activities demonstrate skills that today's soldiers display on a daily basis such as team work, communication and problem solving. "A career with the Army provides on-going training, education, adventure, sports and the opportunity to travel around the globe. People don't realise that there are 140 trades in the Army and over 10,000 jobs on offer including roles in HR, Finance and Musical and Ceremonial." Testing the skills of the students are the following regiments; Royal Artillery (RA), Rifles, Royal Armoured Corps (RAC), Royal Engineers (RE), Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), Royal Signals (RS), Royal Logistic Corps (RLC), Army Air Corps (AAC), Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment (PWRR), The Rifles, Adjacent General's Corps (AGC) and Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC). Points will be awarded at each challenge for performance, speed and accuracy. The winning team will receive the latest Army Be the Best sports equipment for their school and each pupil attending the day will take away an Army goody bag.

Flexible New Format For Ramsgate Week 2008 Regarded as the alternative Cowes, the new-look Ramsgate Week 2008 promises to be a spectacular regatta at the resort’s famous Royal Harbour – the only one with royal status in the UK - from August 11 – 16. Organised by the Royal Temple Yacht Club, it is the third largest international regatta in the UK featuring about 100 boats from Great Britain and the Continent. Trophy races are held each day and include the historic Gold Cup and Round the Goodwin’s races. Commenting on the new format, Commodore Davena Green said: “We believe we have created a very special, highly flexible programme that will accommodate people who want to take a full week’s holiday as well as those who can only spare a couple of days. “The format has been amended to provide a gap between the end of Cowes Week and the start of Ramsgate Week. We are also featuring a UK IRC East Coast Championship as a series running from Thursday to Saturday requiring only two days away from the office. We look forward to welcoming regular and new competitors to one of the friendliest and least expensive regattas in a popular holiday resort.” All types of yachts are encouraged to enter as races are tailored to suit the various classes - and you don’t have to be a top racer to take part. For the fifth year running there is racing for cruising classes with both spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes. Competitors in these classes enjoy a more relaxed week with entertainment on and off the water. Ramsgate benefits from excellent sailing conditions with numerous racing buoys set out in constant depth in unprotected but sheltered water. The start line is just minutes away from the harbour entrance. The award-winning 700-berth marina boasts a string of superior facilities including petrol and diesel; readily available water, electricity and refueling; a modern amenity block with free showers, toilets and launderette; 24 hour access to the outer marina; 24 hour security manning and CCTV surveillance; a chandlery, boat repairs, slipways, boat park and brokerage; and a 40 tonne boat hoist and wash-off service. Ramsgate Week spectators can take advantage of the cafes, restaurants and pubs around the harbour and lively entertainment throughout the event in the harbour-side tented village. The main marquee bar is open daily until 1am. For more information on the regatta go to www.ramsgateweek.com. Business As Usual On The Gatwick Express Customers are number one priority for franchise handover On 22 June 2008, train operator Southern will run its first Gatwick Express service departing London Victoria station at 03h30 bound for Gatwick Airport. Gatwick Express, reputedley the nation’s favourite train company, has been working with Southern to ensure that passengers experience no disruption on that day. Gareth Jones, Head of customer service at Gatwick Express explains, “At operational level, and as far as what our customers experience there will be no change. Our frequency, uniformed staff, journey time and internationally renowned excellent customer service will all remain the same. The Department for Transport ordered the handover of the franchise as part of its Brighton Mainline Route Utilisation Strategy and guaranteed that Gatwick Express will retain the same branding and the same frequency, offering a non-stop service between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria every 15 minutes with a journey time of 30 minutes. Jones adds: “Other aspects of the Gatwick Express service enjoyed by its customers, such as a train waiting in the station, which you can board 15 minutes before departure, and the opportunity to purchase a ticket onboard at no extra charge will also not change after the handover.”
New building in open countryside gets the thumbs down You don't need to build a house in a beautiful landscape to look after it - that is the conclusion reached by the Planning Inspector in justifying a decision by Wealden District Council planners to refuse to allow an eco home to be built in an area protected from development. Permission was sought for an eco home near the summit of sloping open land in Blackboys, Uckfield, and one of the arguments put forward in support of the new building was that a dwelling was needed to help maintain the environmental character and biodiversity interest of the land. Planning Inspector Paul Griffiths described this argument, to ensure the stewardship of the landscape, as "misplaced" as there were other means available such as Government grant schemes which would enhance the landscape in a more sustainable manner. "The value of stewardship must be questioned if the dwelling purported to be required in order to secure it would, as I have found, have a harmful impact on its immediate surroundings," said the Inspector in dismissing the appeal. Rather than grow out of the landscape, he felt the proposed home "would perch unhappily upon it."
"No ecological surveys had been carried out on the site, and any house in that location would in itself have been very reliant on car use." Planning Inspector Paul Griffith was not persuaded that an argument for managing the land in a sustainable manner, even if the building in question was considered to bean eco home, could of itself make an otherwise inappropriate development appropriate or justified. In particular he considered that these objectives were already able to be achieved through a number of government grant aid mechanisms already available to landowners. As part of its Climate Change Action Plan, Wealden District Council aims to promote the reduction of carbon emissions in all new developments and encourage the use of renewable energy. People making planning applications in Wealden are required to complete a sustainability check list which asks how their proposals will utilise sustainable energy, help reduce carbon emissions and ensure the long term sustainable management of wildlife and landscape features.
"We see many proposals by individuals trying to build homes in the open countryside, and where planning policies exist to protect the landscape from inappropriate development, on the grounds that they have a specific need to live there. We are especially grateful to the Planning Inspector for helping to clarify this point and agreeing with the arguments put forward by the Council," said Councillor Keith Whitehead, Cabinet member for Planning and Development. "As a carbon neutral building, making use of solar photovoltaic panels and a woodchip-fuelled boiler, and incorporating natural construction materials such as sweet chestnut cladding and shingles; the project was something we would normally welcome in Wealden. But it was in the open countryside, which was the wrong place for it." 53

FOOD & DRINK
Which Champagnes represent the best value for money? When is the best time to drink a particular vintage of Burgundy? Which are the best producers and the best wines from the New World? The answers to these and many other questions can be found in 1001 Wines You Must Try Before You Die; a fascinating and sumptuously illustrated guide to the most palatable and interesting wines from every wine-growing region of the world. Neil Beckett and his team of wine connoisseurs and writers recommend a huge variety of wines in 1001 fact-filled reviews packed with history, anecdote, facts and opinion. They share their experience and expertise through evocative and seductive tasting notes, and give guidelines on cost. Photographs of the wine labels and bottles as well as stunning photographs of the vineyards, wineries and winemakers also supplement the text. Essential reading for every wine lover. Neil Beckett’s interest in wine stretches back for many years, so much so that his MBA dissertation was on White Burgundy. In 2004 he became the first editor of the critically-acclaimed, leading wine magazine, The World of Wine, on which he works with Hugh Johnson and Andrew Jefford. He is one of two UK tasters on the Grand Jury Européen du vin and his wine writing has won prizes.
Sweet Like Chocolate Chocolate lovers can now satisfy their sweet tooth and help protect the environment, thanks to The Chocolate Truffle Company and their new 48g Chocolate bar containing cocoa sourced from a Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM farm.
The Rainforest Alliance Certified programme currently involves some 6,000 farmers and their families and ensures around 50,000 acres of cocoa is being grown in harmony with the environment.
The Essex-based chocolate company hand makes all its delicious chocolate truffles and bars, and can now offer customers something new as well as guaranteeing that the beans have been grown and harvested responsibly.
The new chocolate range fits in with the ever changing confectionary market. A survey conducted by Mintel show that our tastes for chocolate are getting more demanding and as a result the ‘super premium chocolate market has increased by 85% since 2001.’* Critics are describing the bar as “the Noir Chocolate delivers an exquisite bitter aroma with a strong flavour and is full of character.”
The recently launched bar named “Costa Rica 64,” is produced from Costa Rican Trinitario Cocoa Beans sourced from a Rainforest Alliance Certified farm.
Protecting Sensitive Eco Systems
Rich on dark chocolate, the bar is part of the new trend where chocolate connoisseurs are opting for handmade ethical products rather than the high street brands. The Chocolate Truffle Company is an online business that provides hand made specialist chocolate. They have identified that their corporate customers are now seeking goods that are not only ethical but are in line with their corporate and social responsibility. As the demand for chocolate in the UK outstrips supply in Europe, USA and Japan, The Chocolate Truffle Company hopes to create awareness of the conservation of ecosystems. Christine Moss explains more; “We are very excited about offering great tasting chocolate that is also good for the environment thanks to the Rainforest Alliance Certified programme. We feel that consumers will notice the difference.” Farmers who have earned the Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM seal have to meet comprehensive environmental and social standards, developed by the Rainforest Alliance and other conservation groups that make up the Sustainable Agriculture Network. The farmers must take action to conserve natural resources, protect the welfare of workers and put into place more efficient management practices. 56
Rainforest Alliance Certified farms help to conserve sensitive ecosystems where cocoa is cultivated. This is very important, because as in many places in the world, the cocoa in Costa Rica is often cultivated under the shade of native canopy trees on a landscape similar to that of a natural forest. The cocoa plant is protected by the forest and provides a habit for plant, animal and bird species. You can find out more about the Chocolate Truffles’ new ethical products and the Rainforest Alliance by visiting www.thechocolatetrufflecompany.co.uk

Trading Boundaries began in a Surrey barn 12 years ago. Today, within the walls of the handsome 18th century building, Directors Michael and Tracy Clifford are rightly proud of their collection of eclectic and inspiring furniture. Struck by the wonders of India and the Far East, Michael and Tracy had the vision of improving their home with exotic furniture. After a buying trip to India made by Michael, a container of beautiful antiques arriving in the summer of 1996. Trading Boundaries was one of the first of its kind, a trail blazer and a truly fascinating concept. Visitors to the barn on a bleak grey day would be met by dazzling vibrancy and exotic and splendid pieces from distant continents. Michael and Tracy take turns personally sourcing products from all over the world and import stock regularly. They are passionate about their business and clients are made to feel very welcome in the relaxed atmosphere of the building. Fans of the exotic are rarely disappointed as the antique items still sit happily next to contemporary linen sofas, chic weathered elm and stylish European oak. Behind the main building you will discover The Elephant Cafe-Bar serving delicious food from a light contemporary menu. You can sit inside and soak up the bustling atmosphere or enjoy on to the decked terrace overlooking the gardens and award winning Courtyard of exclusive boutiques. With a vision of creating a fusion between great food, excellent shopping and outstanding live music, Tracy and Michael have built both an outdoor and indoor stage, complete with grand piano. Most Bank Holidays you can already see performances by seriously good musicians, whether it be jazz, opera or world music. An exciting new development is the launch of an evening music programme which is planned to become a regular event by the end of 2008 ( For details, register at www.tradingboundaries.com) Trading Boundaries can be found on the A275 just north of the Bluebell Steam Railway and Sheffield Park National Trust Gardens. You can call trading boundaries on 01825 790200.

A Natural View Diffutherm woodfibre board systems from Natural Building Technologies (NBT) Ltd have been specified for inclusion in an innovative, eco-friendly development by St Piran Homes in Camborne. The homes have been constructed from sustainably sourced timber frame and positioned to maximise natural light and passive solar gain, with all living spaces facing south west. To avoid overheating during the summer months, a ‘sunspace’ roof overhangs each property to provide shading to the windows. The houses feature heat recovery ventilation systems which supply fresh filtered air which is warmed in a heat exchanger with around 90% heat recovery efficiency. This, in addition to the inclusion of the external woodfibre boards, which enable the building to ‘breathe’, vastly reduces any risk to the building fabric. The high levels of ‘breathability’ of the building envelope can contribute to creating a healthier internal environment for occupants through the prevention of moulds and condensation. The woodfibre boards also offer excellent acoustic insulation and work to reinforce a building’s environmental credentials. The woodfibre boards comprise 95% recycled waste timber material and are BREEAM A rated. Barry Bailey, Managing Director of St Piran Homes, said: “We are committed to building high quality, affordable and sustainable homes in Cornwall. All of our homes are designed to complement the local environment while offering the highest levels of comfort and style. We specify sustainable building products where-ever possible, as demonstrated by the inclusion of the lime rendered Diffutherm woodfibre board systems from NBT.”
A design to suit almost every bathroom décor and kitchen style Premium Heated Towel Rail manufacturer Vogue (UK) recently launched a unique combination of hand crafted round and square tube chrome finished designs in the shape of a new ‘Contemporary’ range. The new range consists of carefully selected designs that are an integral component for the look and feel of any bathroom or kitchen. In addition to its eye-catching designs, the range is extremely functional with several models that provide a creative solution to both radiating heat and warming towels.
The Contemporary range is specifically tailored to offer architects, interior designers, retailers, merchants and home owners the ability to choose from a range of products to meet emerging trends, ensuring customers are continually assured of choice, quality and design innovation.
Jennie Mayou, Marketing Executive for Vogue (UK) comments “The Contemporary range has a design to suit almost every bathroom décor and kitchen style. With a choice of both round and square chrome tube designs, we are confident that the Contemporary range will meet and exceed our customers’ demands and expectations”. Jennie commented that the new range was well received at its recent launch: "We have extended the Vogue portfolio this season by adding ten striking new 40mm box section designs to the new Contemporary range. The chrome finished square tube softened by radius corners are right on-trend, bringing subtle textural interest and warmth to any contemporary setting”. “These ten hand crafted designs have been carefully selected to offer very different applications, for example the CN005, perfectly suited for chic’ cornering and the CN010 which offers a more sophisticated option that makes a strong design statement with its vertical tones teamed with chrome reflective accents".

Baxi has extended its renewable energy range to include evacuated tube solar collectors as part of its Baxi Solarflo™ offering. The Baxi Solarflo™ range uses the free energy provided by the sun to heat solar collectors on the roof to provide domestic hot water. The new Solarflo™ evacuated tube collectors are ideal for installation on existing buildings as the manifold tubes sit on top of pitched roof tiles. Unlike Baxi’s flat solar panel collectors, evacuated tube collectors can also be installed on flat roofs with an A frame or on a building façade. On average, Baxi’s Solarflo™ systems will generate between 50 and 60 per cent of a home’s annual domestic hot water requirement and can reduce hot water heating costs by as much as 60 per cent annually.1 During the summer months, up to 100 per cent of hot water can be provided by the solar system and even in the winter there can be some heat generated, with the remainder being provided either by a conventional boiler or electric immersion heater. Typically, a home with a family of four will need two solar collector panels or a thirty evacuated tube collector. Dr Elaine Ball, New Technology Director at Baxi says: “Renewable energy such as solar has a very low environmental impact and can reduce carbon emissions by around 400kg per year, depending on the fuel replaced. “Properties using solar energy to generate hot water will also receive higher ratings when undergoing assessments for Energy Performance Certificates and home owners can apply for up to £400 worth of grants for solar installations through the Low Carbon Buildings Programme. “However, it is vital that the right hot water heating solution is chosen for each application and that systems are installed by qualified professionals to ensure that the property can support the system and it can perform to its optimum capability and efficiency. Consumers will pay just 5 per cent VAT on Baxi Solarflo™ applications when it is fitted by a qualified installer. Compatible with existing UK heating systems, Baxi Solarflo™ evacuated tubes are available in 20 or 30 tube sets, depending on the size of the property, come with up to ten years transferable warranty2 and are easy to install with a tool-free absorber connection and individual collector tubes reducing lift weight. The Copper absorbers used on the collectors are resistant to thermal shocks. Dr Elaine Ball concludes: “Baxi has been at the forefront of heating technology for over 150 years and is dedicated to innovation. The company is always looking at new ways to heat homes in ways that will utilise renewable sources of energy and play a part in protecting the planet.” Baxi’s range of energy efficient products are available throughout the UK from heating merchants, and the company recommends that its products are always installed by a qualified professional heating installer. In addition to Baxi Solarflo™ Baxi has one of the largest ranged of renewable products available including Biomass, Micro CHP, Ground source heat pumps and Air source heat pumps. For further information on Baxi’s range of renewable or high energy efficiency products, call 0844 871 1525 or visit www.baxi.co.uk.

Pillow Talk For a sumptuous slide into the land of nod, nothing beats a pure silk pillowcase. Sensationally soft, silk also lends itself to rich vibrant colours or subtle dusky shades, offering a stunning palette of colours to choose from. "The soft handle of the fabric combined with the reflective qualities and sheer density of such a delicate fibre result in colours appearing much more intense in silk than with other material," says silk bedding expert Tim Drake of Mandarina Textiles. His own range of pure silk bedding and silk filled duvets includes an ever-evolving choice of pillowcase colourways: from deep liquid plum to the gentlest dove grey or richest old gold. "The beauty is that they all work well with naturals, so pepping up a neutral colour scheme is as
easy as buying a pair of new pillowcases," says Tim. Retailing for just GBP35 a pair for an Oxford style in 100% silk sandwashed habotai (standard size), Mandarina's silk pillowcases are of the same quality - but around half the price - of those sold in such world class retail outlets as Gallerie Lafayette in Paris or Macey's in New York. Mandarina Textiles offers standard size Oxfords in a range of eight colours while King, Continental (65cm x 65cm) and plain Housewife (no border) pillowcases come in a natural (soft ivory) only. Silk is a luxury item and care should be taken when cleaning. For a brochure and more details contact Mandarina Textiles on 01706 659908 or visit www.mandarina.co.uk.

HOMES & INTERIORS The Environment Agency today warmly welcomed Sir Michael Pitt’s comprehensive final review into the 2007 summer floods as a significant contribution to managing the future flood risk in England and Wales. In welcoming the report, Chief Executive Paul Leinster said the Environment Agency had highlighted the need for further clarity on the responsibilities for flooding from surface water drains, infrastructure protection, more publicly available information on flood risk, and additional resources to help adapt to climate change as key issues to be swiftly taken forward. “Sir Michael’s report puts the spotlight back on the need for the country to be prepared and able to respond to the devastating impacts of flooding. He covers a wide range of topics – many directly related to our work – and all of which are essential to better protecting people and the environment from flooding into the future,” Paul Leinster said. “In particular, we’re pleased with Sir Michael Pitt’s confidence that the Environment Agency is the right organisation to be given a strategic overview role for all types of flood risk in England. We now need the Floods Bill to give us the proper tools and legislation to finish the job. Urgent action is needed now to clarify our role and that of the local authorities, and to explore the new resources that will be needed to do this job.” The Environment Agency has highlighted progress over the past 12 months in a number of areas that are a focus in Sir Michael Pitt’s report: 1. Flood forecasting and flood warning – The number of people receiving a flood warning via the Floodline Warnings Direct service has increased by 29% (73,000 people), and from July, the Environment Agency and the Met Office will pilot a new service to forecast and warn emergency services and critical infrastructure providers about extreme rainfall which could lead to surface water flooding. 2. Strategic overview and Floods and Water Bill – A clear strategic overview role for all types of flood risk will be given to the Environment Agency in England, and the new Floods and Water Bill Gloucester floods July 2007 © Environment Agency
82
will be drafted to reflect this. The strategic overview role will also assist the Environment Agency in working closer with others to ensure that surface water flooding is better managed, and the Environment Agency is working to provide a predictive indication of “hot spots” that are naturally vulnerable to surface water flooding. 3. Data sharing – The Environment Agency has been further developing its close relationship with the Met Office and through access to 110 of the Met Office’s real time rain gauges, coupled with its own network, the Environment Agency is now developing more detailed river forecasting models, leading to more timely flood warnings being issued and better decisions by flood forecasters. 4. Reservoir safety legislation – Work is underway to make flood plans available to emergency planners about the flood risk from dam failures. “It’s also important that the real risk of climate change has been acknowledged by Sir Michael Pitt. Recent flood events have highlighted the urgency of adapting to the potential effects of climate change to protect lives, property, the economy and the environment. Now that the Government’s Foresight report has been reviewed, and it’s clear that we are going to face less predictable weather and more extreme events such as flash flooding, investment in flood risk management should continue to rise to keep up with the changing climate,” Paul Leinster said. “This report is comprehensive and well researched, and overall we’re pleased it’s raised issues of importance and ways forward, for not only the Environment Agency, but for local authorities, utilities and emergency responders. “It’s also encouraging that the report reinforces the importance of individuals in taking responsibility for protecting themselves and their properties. We can’t stop the rain but we can all work together to reduce the impacts of flooding,” Paul Leinster said. People can check their flood risk and find advice on how to prepare for flooding at www.environment-agency.gov.uk. HOMES & INTERIORS
Art Deco Penthouse, Mayfair - Case Study ION Glass were commissioned by Karin Verzariu, BIDA, director of design company Key Interiors, to supply a range of bespoke glass installations at a penthouse apartment on the Strand in London. The brief was to create an Art Deco style apartment incorporating modern frameless glass products, while using shapes and patterns reminiscent of 1930’s chic. The interiors were completely refurbished using Ion Glass as well as a large variety of other bespoke materials, custom designed furniture and accessories. ION Glass were instructed to design and install frameless shower enclosures, a glass balustrade, coloured glass panels and doors as well as a bespoke mirror. ION were able to make the client’s vision a reality by giving the designer the flexibility of a range of glass and custom made metal fixings. In the main bathroom ION installed the Caspian Shower Enclosure - a circular shower screen reminiscent of the Art Deco era, made from curved glass. To secure an absolutely perfect fit the shower area was measured on completion of tiling and shower tray installation, even a thin layer of tiles can affect the size of the glass manufactured. The completely frameless glass screen is set into channels on the walls with minimal glass to glass stainless steel fittings. The curved glass shower combines contemporary design with 1930’s Art Deco style. Special lighting effects enhance the dome shaped ceiling, which is tiled with indigo glass mosaic. The project involved the creation of a luxurious steam and shower room. ION Glass worked with the main contractor, Symm & Company and the design company, Key Interiors, to create a contemporary design with elegant and durable materials. A frameless glass door was designed to lead into the main steamroom. The horizontal black and 84
white striped marble wall cladding and white marble worktops were complemented with black glass cabinet doors and glass panels. Templates were made to ensure the black coloured glass would be manufactured to the precise size required. The glass panels and doors are tough, heat resistant and easy to clean. The toughened glass complements this glossy and stylish wetroom and is durable, easy to clean and in keeping with the design brief. The designer specified a custom made mirror for the elegant Guest Cloakroom and frameless mirrored doors in the Entrance Hall and Master Bathroom. The cloakroom mirror design incorporates vertical stripes in alternating black and clear mirror. The final glass installation was this futuristic glass balustrade for the bespoke spiral staircase. Custom made to suit the client’s particular space and design requirements, the staircase was measured by ION's Surveyor to manufacture the glass for a perfect fit. The result is a stunning design feature to a functional, yet beautiful staircase. The balustrade installation took two days. Spotlights enhance the visual impact of the curved glass. A finishing touch is the hand stitched leather which covers the hand rail. The glass balustrade is an important addition to the elegant design of the helical staircase in this stylish interior space. While the property has now been completely refurbished, ION Glass are currently working with Key Interiors to produce architectural glass shelves with integral lighting to display the client’s large collection of Art Deco coloured glass. The Staffordshire, The Most Unwanted Dog In The South East The Staffordshire bull terrier has become the most unwanted dog in the South East, a new RSPCA survey has revealed. Through no fault of its own, the breed is suffering a bad press due to its aggressive image and popularity as a status symbol. The RSPCA believes so many Staffies are in need of new homes because sadly the breed is popular with irresponsible owners who are interested in their own image rather than their dog's welfare. The Society is emphasising that it is bad and ill-informed owners who are to blame for the Staffie's aggressive reputation, not the dogs themselves. In fact, throughout RSPCA Pet Adoption Week anyone thinking of getting a dog is encouraged to consider a Staffie as, with the right owners, they can make the perfect pet. Professionally trained staff work hard to rehabilitate all animals in the Society's care. Before they can be adopted, each animal has a behavioural assessment and health check to help match them with the right new owner.
up taking a Staffie or one of the other dogs on our 'most unwanted' list back, you'll know you've given an extra special animal a much-needed new home." In fact, a survey carried out for the RSPCA showed that 89 per cent of people in Great Britain who have adopted a pet said it was a good experience and 87 per cent of people said they would recommend adopting a pet to others4. Every year the RSPCA rehomes around 70,000 animals and 17,000 of these are dogs. All are unwanted pets that have been dumped, victims of cruelty or neglect, or have been handed over to the Society by those whose circumstances have changed. At any one time, the RSPCA has hundreds of animals looking for loving new homes, from large horses to tiny mice - and everything in between! For an information pack about adopting an animal from the RSPCA, call the dedicated Pet Adoption Week phone line on 0300 123 8484 - or find out more by visiting www.rspca.org.uk/paw.

Premier Yacht Sales are owners of a number of marinas in the UK. The latest addition to the marinas was Sovereign Harbour Marina at Eastbourne which became the eighth and furthest east in the group on July 6th 2007. Sovereign Harbour is a large marina with an array of restaurants and shops as well as a large residential area surrounding the five harbour marina that plays host to nearly 900 berths. This year Premier Yacht Sales has spent much of their time promoting the all new, British designed Moody 45DSe. This “miniature superyacht” (Yachting World) has impressed all; potential customers awaiting their first look have all been delighted when on board the “real thing” and the yachting press have all written rave reviews being more than pleasantly surprised when given the chance to test her, “She sails well, handles positively and the interior is well laid out and put together.” (Yachting Monthly). Her one level living concept is new to the industry but is being admired by power boaters and sailors looking for a lighter interior where social space and steering space are together with the sleeping accommodation and heads down below.

The Porsche 911 stirs emotions in sports car enthusiasts the world over. Timeless emotions that have been experienced by generations since the model series was first launched in 1963. This summer, Porsche is introducing the next generation of the 911: a car that exemplifies the core 911 principles of distinctive design with inner strength. Acclaimed as one of the best sports cars in the world, Porsche has developed the unique rear-engined concept of the 911 continually over its 45 year evolution so that it remains relevant in changing times. The 911 is the perfect synthesis of sportiness, superior everyday versatility, all-round economy and genuine environmental compatibility. Now, by introducing a wide range of new and truly comprehensive technologies, Porsche has built on the outstanding reputation of the 911 to further optimise the car for today’s driving environment. All-new flat-six power units displacing 3.6 and 3.8-litres featuring Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), and the option of the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch transmission, are particular highlights marking a quantum leap in the car’s development. The four new 911 models – two Coupés and two Cabriolets – offer increased dynamic performance and outstanding efficiency. With either a six-speed manual gearbox or the PDK transmission, the Carrera Coupé offers outstanding fuel economy of 29.4mpg combined. Furthermore, CO2 emissions of the 3.6-litre engine are down by up to 15 per cent to 225 g/km, thereby achieving VED Band F and reducing vehicle excise duty and company car taxation costs. And these engines, six kilogrammes lighter than before, also outperform EU5 emissions regulations. At first sight, the new generation of the 911 can be identified through innovations in design both front and rear. These include larger rear view mirrors, newly-designed 18-inch and 19-inch wheels and new lights featuring LED technology. With LED day-time driving lights and bixenon headlights now standard on all new models in the Carrera range, the distinctive style of the 911 silhouette has continued to evolve, and its classic look is further emphasised by striking, new LED rear lights. As a further driving safety option, Porsche now also offers Dynamic Cornering Lights on all models. 92

London’s Canary Wharf is the stage for the show debut of a stunning new British sportscar on June 9, as Breckland Technology removes the wraps from its exclusive two-seat V8 soft top, the Beira, at London Motorexpo. Norfolk-based Breckland - part of Hong Kong-based multi-national, Riche Holdings - is vastly experienced in the development and production of high-quality, low volume specialist cars and prototypes for an array of prestigious international clients, including Mosler, and has now employed its substantial skills in the making of its own limited-production supercar. The Beira is a hand-built, two-seat roadster with unique styling cues, based on proven GM architecture and powered by GM’s LS2, 6-litre V8 engine, tuned to produce just a whisper short of 400bhp. Tipping the scales at some 1,400kg, the Beira’s impressive power-toweight ratio ensures invigorating performance, with the promise of a sub-five second sprint to 100kph, coupled with tremendous torque and a governed top speed of 155mph. “Beira carries on from where Marcos and TVR left off in terms of providing maximum performance for money spent, and real individuality”, says Breckland Director, Mike Rawlings. “We wanted to showcase Breckland’s design and engineering capabilities and produce an exciting driver’s car, with excellent handling dynamics, terrific performance and great looks,” he added. “We also looked seriously at environmental concerns and, as a result, Beira is designed to run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas as well as petrol. This not only helps to reduce running costs and emissions, but also means Beira is capable of a range of some 700 miles between refuelling stops - that’s the equivalent of travelling non-stop from the north to the south coast of France. Beira features a custom-built interior, including electric windows, air conditioning, twin airbags - in the steering wheel and in the passenger dash - combined with clear, concise instrumentation, and hand-stitched leather/Alcantara seats and trim. 94
Breckland stresses that the Beira’s interior can be customised to specific buyer requirements in terms of materials and equipment - one significant benefit of the company’s inherent flexibility as a low-volume producer. The stylish central instrument cluster incorporates a double DIN showcase of mobile entertainment from in-car specialists, Clarion. Its immense specification includes a 7” TFT colour touch screen, DVD player, direct iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, and an in-built 30Gb hard disk drive (HDD) navigation system with full European mapping. Beira buyers can also opt for the rear reversing camera, which relays the view behind onto the same in-dash display. A GM manual cloth hood with heated rear screen is retained on the Beira and, when folded down, stows quickly and neatly out of sight under the deck lid for a smooth, integrated appearance. This is further accentuated by the sculpted deck lid, incorporating individual fairings behind driver and passenger.

Audi Charts New Territory With A5 And S5 Coupés Audi struck out in yet another new direction at the 2007 International Geneva Motor Show with the all-new A5, a dramatically styled coupé combining four-seat practicality, 455-litre luggage capacity and a new, even more overtly driver-oriented chassis configuration incorporating the longest wheelbase ever to underpin a B-segment Audi. UK prices for the first launch models, which are now available to order, start from £33,430 OTR, and first deliveries are due in July. In a break with Audi tradition which normally dictates that the launch of the higher performance S quattro model in each range is staggered, Geneva also hosted the world debut of the S5 quattro, powered by a potent 4.2-litre V8 FSI petrol engine with 354PS and priced at £39,825 OTR. The already highly advanced FSI direct injection petrol and common rail direct injection TDI engines powering the new A5 have also evolved further in the transition to the new coupe, the improvements to the petrol units in particular bringing significant gains in fuel economy and reductions in CO2 output. The optimum efficiency of this V6 comes courtesy of the advanced Audi valvelift system, which varies valve lift between two levels through the use of sets of sliding cams mounted directly on the intake camshafts. These feature two sets of adjacent cam contours for small and large valve lift, and the power demanded by the driver at any one time dictates which cam is used to open the intake valves. The two V6 TDI engines available at launch are both derived from the advanced common rail, piezo-injected units powering A4 and A6 models, but in the A5 the outputs of the 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre units have increased to 190PS and 240PS respectively. The A5 2.7 TDI can accelerate from rest to 62mph in 7.6 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 144mph, while at the same time returning up to 42.1mpg, and the A5 3.0 TDI quattro reduces the acceleration time to just 5.9 seconds and increases the maximum speed to 155mph. Despite being second only to the awe-inspiring 500PS Q7 V12 TDI in terms of acceleration, the A5 3.0 TDI quattro nevertheless manages to cover up to 39.2mpg (combined cycle). Both versions are fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) as standard.
True to Audi S quattro series form, specially adapted sports suspension and enhanced high performance brakes with black painted calipers safely contain the V8’s muscle. And as usual the performance advantage it brings is played down externally, the subtle indicators including an exclusive ‘S’ grille design, unique front and rear bumpers, a more pronounced bootlid spoiler, aluminium look door mirrors, a dual branch, four-pipe exhaust system and exclusive 19-inch alloy wheels. The key differentiating feature is arguably within the headlights, which feature LED strip daytime running lights A six-speed, close ratio manual gearbox is fitted as standard to all A5 models, and also to the S5 quattro, and for front-wheel-drive versions there will be the option of a new version of the acclaimed Audi multitronic continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Now featuring eight fixed ratios in its ‘manual’ mode, this advanced transmission actually boosts fuel economy compared with a manual equivalent in many cases, without impacting significantly on performance. Optional features also include a panoramic electric sunroof, a Bang & Olufsen audio system delivering 500 watts of music power via 14speakers, the Audi Parking System Advanced with rear-mounted camera and Adaptive Light swivelling headlights for improved corner illumination. The DVD satellite navigation option is also offered in conjunction with a new, even more intuitive version of the already acclaimed Multi Media Interface (MMI) controlling the car’s infotainment systems. To find out more contact your local Audi showroom.
A 4.2-litre V8 FSI petrol unit is reserved for the S5 quattro. With 354PS and 440Nm of torque available from just 3,500rpm, it powers the new flagship to 62mph from rest in 5.1 seconds on the way to a governed top speed of 155mph, all the while revving exceptionally freely and accompanying the rich seam of power with a classic bass-heavy V8 soundtrack.

Lamborghini announces price of new Gallardo The price of the new Lamborghini Gallardo Coupé LP560-4 in the UK has been confirmed. The new car, first shown at Geneva Motor Show in March 2008, replaces the original Gallardo Coupé launched in 2003. With 40 hp more power than the previous car, enhanced acceleration from 0-62 mph of 3.7 seconds, and a top speed in excess of 200 mph, the new car is priced at £147,330.00 on the road, including NavTrak vehicle tracking system and delivery package. The Gallardo Coupé LP560-4 is so named due to its engine position – Longitudinale Posteriore - and its power output of 560 hp. With 40 hp more than the previous Gallardo and a 20 kg reduction in weight, the power:weight ratio is improved to 2.5 kg per hp. The ‘4’ refers to the Lamborghini product feature of permanent four-wheel drive. The LP560-4 comes with a new V10, 5.2 litre direct fuel injection engine: ‘Iniezione Diretta Stratificata’. Despite its increased power, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have been reduced by 18%. With its new engine, permanent four-wheel drive transmission and new suspension, it delivers significantly enhanced performance and dynamics. Lamborghini’s engineers have also improved traction, handling and stability at high speeds, with the new transmission, new suspension, optimised aerodynamics as well as the reduced weight and decreased friction between the components, all contributing to the overall improvements in the vehicle. “The new Gallardo Coupé 560/4 is a significantly enhanced version of what was already an extreme car,” said Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini SpA. “With an even more sharply defined character, the new Gallardo LP560-4 is also innately elegant 98
and sensitive: the uncompromised expression of an uncompromised lifestyle.” The Gallardo Coupé LP560-4 is a successor of the most successful Lamborghini model of all time. Approximately 7100 Gallardo models have left the Sant’Agata Bolognese production plant since the coupe’s original launch in 2003. The Gallardo Coupé LP560-4 will be available to view from late June in the UK’s dealerships in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh, with customer deliveries commencing in the summer.
