ON THE COVER When looking for luxurious breaks away thoughts turn to far-flung tropical resorts, but opulence can be found much closer to home and without breaking the bank. Dale Hill Hotel & Golf Club is somewhat of a hidden gem, nestled in East Sussex’s rolling hills. The hotel offers 35 en-suite bedrooms, many of which offer breathtaking views across the High Weald and boasts four AA stars and a Conde Nast Johansen recommendation. Banqueting and conference facilities are complimented by the award-winning Wealden View restaurant, holder of a prestigious red rosette marking quality dining. The hotel also features two 18-hole golf courses, including the renowned Ian Woosnam-designed layout, with ardent rolling hills, manicured greens, beautiful woodland and strategic bunkering, all of which makes for one of the most charming inland courses in the UK. But golf is not all that’s on offer, nestling near the Kent border, lies the historic village of Ticehurst where you can retrace the steps of Anne Boleyn. Or if a country walk is more your thing then Bewl Water – the south east’s largest freshwater lake – is the ideal place to while away a Sunday afternoon. But any visitor would be foolish not to stop off at Dale Hill’s sister property, Chart Hills. Just 15 miles from Dale Hill, Chart Hills Golf Club offers outstanding facilities on all fronts and is the perfect venue for every occasion. The club has everything that guests could desire including; conferencing and wedding facilities; a championship golf course and fine dining, all of which make Chart Hills the ideal venue for your special occasion.

I want everything except the kitchen sink The UK is a nation of demanding house-hunters, a survey from fish4homes (www.fish4homes.co.uk) can reveal today. We have unrealistic expectations of how long it takes to find the right property, with 72% of those surveyed revealing they expect it to take up to 3 months to find the right home (when in fact it can take up to 6 months), but we also have farfetched ideas of what we will get for our money. When asked what was the most important thing when looking for a property, over 90% of us care most about the size of the rooms, with nearly half (46%) being concerned about the state of the fitted kitchen and 41% about the bathroom suite. We have also been known to turn properties down because the rooms were too small (73%) or the vibe in the property didn’t feel right (36%). Interestingly 13% of us are worried about the ergonomics or feng shui of a property, with 14% needing a separate toilet to the bathroom, and 16% cited concern over the colour of the walls. When asked about the importance of outdoor features, the size of the back garden was top of the list with 61% of us demanding a large back garden, and 34% of us requiring a driveway to park the car. 6% of those surveyed were more concerned about having space for a pet than those who had issues around security (2%). The results show that we are a nation spoilt for choice, and factors such as the distance to the nearest train station (76%), the length of the commute (72%), the volume of traffic on the road (51%), and the local school catchment area are all important issues when making that ever important decision. Stewart Black, head of sales fish4homes comments “As more and more properties are available for rent and for sale, Brits are understandably looking for more for their money. It is important to realise however, that estate agents are not magicians and cannot create a perfect house with all the extras, on a small budget. Clients need to be honest and realistic when they start house hunting and research as much as possible to know what their money will buy”. Lisa Martin, PR Manager for Leaders Lettings Agents adds “We have noticed that Brits do have a tendency to be very upfront about their
8
needs when looking for a home. We have had some interesting requests from clients ranging from a repaint of the front door as the client was superstitious, to people wanting a garden to be astro-turfed because they didn’t want to mow the 10 x 10 ft lawn! At the end of the day, we manage our clients’ expectations by explaining exactly what you can get for your money and what you could get if you travelled one mile further down the road”. To help find your ideal home, fish4homes recommends the following: • Budget carefully and be realistic about what you can afford to spend • Check the area you like at day and night, and then look a little further afield to see if you can get more in a different street – you might be surprised with your results • Make sure you know the Borough Council and Schooling if that is important to you • Calculate the worst case scenario for your commute to work or for the school run • If outdoor space or a driveway is important you might need to compromise on the size of the spare room or storage facilities • Don’t expect estate agents to work wonders. They can only show you the properties which are available and which fit your criteria. • If your priorities change, don’t forget to tell your estate agent. • If you like a property–go for a 2nd viewing and have a second opinion from a friend or family member. If you are still keen – make your offer!

PROPERTY Thanks to milder weather here in the UK, we are spending more and more time in the garden with friends and family. Gardens are no longer just used for the occasional barbecue or somewhere for the kids to kick a ball about. Instead we’re spending time and money each year making sure they’re a haven for both wildlife and our families and friends. Chamberlain & Wallis, whose founders have over 50 years experience in the oak frame building industry, create a range of beautiful oak buildings which will complement any home. Pergolas are influenced by the Mediterranean, yet constructed from a traditional oak framework offering a contemporary addition to your garden. Often seen with beautiful grape vines or clematis trailing from the roof, Pergolas literally transform an unused area of your garden into a stunning space for entertaining. Pergolas are unique in the fact they require minimal groundworks and therefore disruption to your daily life. Gardener’s Retreats are also ideal to supplement your outside space, providing shaded areas and wet weather shelter. Whether you’re looking for a quiet space to read the paper, or somewhere tranquil to enjoy your garden and the view, the Gardener’s Retreat will provide the ideal solution. Constructed from traditional oak framework and glazed joinery with high level insulation if required, these buildings really will protect you from the elements. The Gazebo is sympathetically designed to blend with the existing garden surroundings, providing a covered area with plenty of space to entertain friends and family. Constructed using a traditional oak framing all Gazebos are finished with wonderful hand crafted detail. Simply add a table and chairs, a chilled bottle of Rosé and you are ready to wow your friends with this beautiful building. To find out more call Chamberlain & Wallis, on 01323 765410.

Broadhurst Manor, near Horsted Keynes, is a handsome old house hidden deep in the countryside. Set down a private road, through tall decorative wrought iron gates an ancient manor house which has grown over time and is now mellowed with age can only just be glimpsed. The current house grew from the remains of a large 16th century mansion which was partly demolished in the 1780s and then restored and enlarged in the 1920s and 30s. Now it is listed grade II* being of special architectural interest. Inside, there are many period architectural features and detailing; some original, including panelling and fireplaces. Of particular note is the late 16th century main staircase with rare siege doors which would have been closed if an attack was imminent. Broadhurst belonged to a family called Michelbourne until 1656 when it was sold to Edward Lightmaker who was a London brewer. His wife, Saphirah, was sister to Robert Leighton, the Archbishop of Glasgow, who lived at the house with her in his retirement and whose tomb is in the village churchyard. More recently, the property has been the home of Carla Lane and her renowned animal sanctuary, Animaline, which will move to new premises. The house has at least 13 bedrooms and 7 reception rooms. Outside, there are 16 acres around the house which include enchanting formal gardens with yew hedged compartments and stone paved terracing, informal grounds with 3 lakes as well as paddocks and fields. There is a yard with stables, a barn, cottage and a former walled garden with an outdoor riding school. “Broadhurst Manor” says James Lawrie of selling agents Strutt & Parker “is almost a secret. It is a wonderfully romantic house, part of olde England and impressive yet hidden from the world.” To find out more contact Stutt & Parker on 01273 407044.

The most expensive country property ever to go on sale in the UK is being put on the market this week. Priced at in excess of £70 million, Updown Court is being heralded as the first 21st century stately home in Britain, with grounds larger in area than both the royal residences of Buckingham Palace and Hampton Court. Located in the picturesque English village of Windlesham in the heart of Surrey, in what is becoming known as the 'golden triangle' (Runnymede, Ascot and Weybridge), this 58 acre estate has all the features of the grandest homes in Britain, together with state of the art technology. All the systems are computer controlled and can be accessed from anywhere in the world. The sumptuous facilities include five swimming pools, a heated marble driveway, a private cinema, bowling alley, indoor squash court, all weather floodlit tennis court, and stabling for five horses. There is also a helipad for private landings and underground garaging for eight limousines. The accommodation comprising the Updown Court estate is made up of four principal buildings - the main house, guest accommodation, gate lodge and a separate estate manager's office. Twenty two bedroom/bathroom suites are provided as part of a total of 103 rooms. The sweeping double staircase at the entrance of the main house is a replica of the late Gianni Versace's home in Miami. The main house also contains a panic room in case of terrorist attacks. Updown Court is only 28 miles from Central London and within a 20 minute ride by car to Heathrow Airport. The local area has a range of top schools for all ages, including Eton College and St Mary's School at Ascot. Sporting
facilities nearby include golf at Wentworth and Sunningdale, racing at Ascot and polo on Smith's Lawn. The area is home to the family of Sheikh al Maktoum. Interest in this new 'trophy home' has already been expressed by various international entrepreneurs and the 'super-rich'. The property has been masterminded by property developer and entrepreneur, Leslie Allen-Vercoe of Rhymer Investments. For further information about Updown Court, property agents, Savills and Hamptons International should be contacted direct, or visit the website www.updowncourt.com

And Now For Something Completely Different By Roger Paine
This Monty Python catchphrase had its origins in BBC magazine shows when announcers would intersperse current affairs and interviews with lighter human interest stories. It also gave the name to a full length film made up of the best Python sketches. Today it has become an accepted part of our everyday language and can be applied to anything unusual or ‘out of the norm’. Property is no exception. Whether it is an old house, probably Grade I or II listed, a converted church, school or watermill, a houseboat or a bespoke architect designed contemporary glass and stainless steel property, the attraction will be that it is “completely different”. Whilst estate agents readily acknowledge that for many homeowners ‘location, location’ is frequently the most influential factor when seeking to buy a house, they also concede that finding an unusual and sometimes unique house can, for an increasing number - credit-crunch or no credit-crunch - be of over-riding importance. These types of properties frequently reflect the personality and lifestyle of the purchaser. They want a house which is a statement of how they see themselves or how they might wish others to see them. This can be reflected in a property which is massively eco-friendly or one which is situated close to water for peace and tranquility which a lake or river can provide. There are also those who want a house with an interesting provenance, all-of-a-piece with the owner’s antique furniture, books and paintings thus retaining the ambience of bye-gone years; or there are those who prefer a modern architectural statement of their individuality. Great Britain has a rich history of modern architecture and in the 20’s and 30’s was home to many talented avant garde architects, often fleeing turbulent political situations in their own countries. Walter Gropius and Erno Goldfinger were two who established notable careers in Britain, building numerous houses and apartment blocks that still stand to this day. By the 1960’s this style of house, which emphasized light, space and the integration of architecture into the natural 22
surroundings, had become popular on a broad scale. Purchasers of specialist properties of this era prefer the clean lines and single storey designs such properties feature and which, in several cases, are now classified as listed buildings. At the other end of the spectrum are a rich variety of buildings intended originally for another purpose but which have now been converted for use as family homes. The most easily recognizable of these are barns and oast-houses, a landmark feature of the Kent, Sussex and Surrey countryside. Although thanks to their popularity, sustained for over half a century, they may no longer fully qualify for the Pythonesque sobriquet. The same could not be said, however, of several other residential conversions sold over recent years. These include the Old Gymnasium, a conversion arranged over four floors, in the former Royal Marines barracks at Walmer; the former gothic-style Chapel at St Michael’s, Limpsfield, a school founded in the late 1880’s for the children of missionaries, which featured a minstrel’s gallery and beautiful stained glass windows; a converted watermill, with the original machinery still in place, now with six bedrooms and three bathrooms on the River Mole near Dorking; and a Grade II* listed 17th century village house, with its own unconsecrated chapel with spire and tubular bells, in Lingfield. Many former churches and chapels still exist and if you find one of interest contact the Diocesan Redundant Churches Uses Committee (www.cofe.anglican.org) which can make a recommendation to the Church Commissioners, who also keep a list of available redundant churches. Although it is worth remembering that relatives of the buried have rights over graves and tombstones even if the church has been declared redundant. Nevertheless, if you are seriously seeking a property which is “completely different”, and irrespective of whether or not you are religiously inclined, it could be the answer to your prayers!

HISTORY
The Flying Angel By Roger Paine The Mission to Seafarers was founded in 1856 and celebrated its 150th anniversary at a special service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey on 28th March 2006. Although this service was formal recognition of the Mission’s foundation, it first came into existence in 1835. It was then that the Reverend John Ashley, a young Anglican priest, began visiting ships at anchor in the Bristol Channel. The realisation that no one from the Church took any notice of sailors in ships had been brought home to him by his daughter who, when walking on the cliffs and seeing the ships at anchor, had asked her father, with the innocent wisdom of a child, “Daddy, where do sailors go to church?”. With his interest aroused by this simple question he soon discovered that not only the majority of them never did, but also that no one from the ministry ever went to visit them. He was so moved by their isolation and need he gave up a secure living to devote his life to serving those who served at sea. John Ashley’s work soon inspired other ministers in other ports and it was decided in 1856 to coordinate and expand this mission. It was called The Missions to Seamen and in the same year adopted a flying angel as its sign, inspired by a verse from the Book of Revelation, “Then I saw an angel flying in mid-heaven with an eternal-gospel to proclaim to those on earth, to every nation and tribe, language and people”. It became known as The Mission to Seafarers in 2000, to reflect more accurately what in reality it had always been, namely a missionary society of the Anglican Church which cares for the spiritual and practical welfare of all seafarers regardless of gender, nationality or faith. Since the earliest days, the Mission has played a significant role in Sussex and Kent life. The first reading room for sailors was opened in Deal in 1861 by Lord Shaftesbury, the mission’s president, and the society soon extended its network of chaplains to Rochester, Dover and Ramsgate. A notable Mission figure in the late 19th century was the Reverend Stanley Treanor. He was chaplain in the Downs from 1878 to 1910 and spent 200 days a year afloat visiting ships. He was also a frequent visitor to the Goodwin Lightship, anchored on the notorious stretch of sandbanks off the east Kent coast. It was reported that his seamanship, even by professional standards, was of a high order. He could board sailing vessels from his Mission boat before the ships had come to anchor and leave them after they had weighed. At the outbreak of the Second World War, the Mission was involved from the first day. The SS Athenia, which had just left Liverpool for Montreal, carrying more than 1,400 people, was torpedoed off the Irish coast with the loss of 112 lives. Survivors were visited in hospital by the Glasgow chaplain, and from then on the Mission was heavily committed to providing accommodation, food and support for thousands of sailors. In Dover a disused building was ‘fitted up’ for the crews of minesweepers to have somewhere to rest. After the end of hostilities, in appreciation of the way the Mission had looked after seafarers, the Admiralty made a gift to the society of 1,000 guineas. The 1950’s saw the beginning of enormous changes in the shipping industry. One of these changes, containerization, brought larger ships and smaller crews. It also led to quicker turnaround times and the practice of flying crews to their ships. This cut the lengthy waiting periods in ports and there was less need for accommodation. So the big clubs in port centres were phased out and the Mission opened smaller,
more accessible clubs. Today it has a network of chaplains, staff and volunteers in 230 ports worldwide, reaching out to visit seafarers onboard their ships and offering a welcome when they arrive in port. In over 100 ports the Mission runs centres where crews can relax away from their ships, obtain local information, discuss problems and share worship. In 2007, the mission made 72,000 ship visits; distributed 175,000 bibles and other items of Christian literature; connected 230,000 telephone calls on behalf of seafarers; and visited almost 600 seafarers in hospital On the staff of the “Flying Angel Club” at the National Sea Training School outside Gravesend in the late 1960’s there was a young South African priest, Bill Christianson. Now the Reverend Canon Christianson, the Mission’s Secretary General, says, “Today it is technology, multi-culturalism and criminalization that are the key issues affecting sailors’ welfare. But some things remain the same. Loneliness and homesickness are still a problem, and today’s seafarers suffer the dehumanising effects of corner-cutting and cost-cutting, especially as regards safety, practised by an unscrupulous minority of shipowners. The characteristic problems that so many chaplains and volunteers in the Mission face are anxieties about security, which lead to isolation for seafarers in port for they cannot visit the shore, and chaplains cannot visit them”. To address these problems in Dubai the Mission has built the world’s first floating seafarers’ centre. This purpose built 27 metre boat was named MV Flying Angel by The Prince of Wales at a ceremony in Dubai on 28th February 2007. It is designed to serve seafarers whose ships use the east coast anchorage of the United Arab Emirates, the second largest bunkering anchorage in the world. At present, as many as 2,000 seafarers who crew these ships are unable to go ashore to contact their families. Since the boat commissioned, seafarers have been able to enjoy the facilities onboard which include an internet café, telephones, a medical clinic and a paramedic, and a book and DVD library. The Mission’s two Dubai chaplains each spend a week onboard operating around the anchorage five days a week during daylight. This support boat is the 21st century equivalent of the cutter Eirene built by the Reverend Ashley for visiting ships in the Bristol Channel 150 years ago. The Mission to Seafarers (www.missiontoseafarers.org), like all major charities, relies heavily on a devoted band of volunteers. Throughout the country dozens of men and women act as the parish link between their church and the Mission. They try to make communities aware of the society and its work, and help with raising funds. Knitting winter woollens for seafarers, who arrive from warmer climates unprepared for the cold of Northern Europe, is a popular voluntary activity. At St Mary the Virgin church in Rolvenden, Kent, visitors were asked to join in some “united knitting” to create scarves for seafarers. In the East Sussex towns of Hastings and Newhaven the mission has Honorary Chaplains who are ready to provide spiritual and welfare assistance to seafarers in ships using the ports, or at sea off the coast. Paying tribute to the work of The Mission to Seafarers at its world conference in October 2006, the Mission’s president, The Princess Royal, said “If the Mission did not exist, someone would have to invent a similar organisation”. Fortunately, thanks to John Ashley’s foresight and dedication over a century and half ago, there is no need.

LEISURE
Fine Crafts at Pashley Manor Gardens The Sussex Guild will be staging a two day exhibition sale of contemporary and traditional crafts on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st August at Pashley Manor Gardens. The show will feature around 40 selected Guild members who will be displaying work of the highest standard, with a number of members showing for the very first time and a few select Guest Exhibitors. The event will take place in a large marquee, just below the magnificent oak tree, in front of the Manor house. Guild membership has increased to nearly 100 professional makers this year – each selected for their excellence and innovation of design and craftsmanship, ensuring that the Guild continues to promote the highest standards in both contemporary and traditional craft. A number of members will be making their debut with the Guild at Pashley. One of the new ceramicists is Lisa Katzenstein whose present work is concerned with reviving the art of floral decoration on ceramics. It is floral with a modern twist, however with an emphasis on wild plants. Once seen as weeds but now in our ecological conscious times viewed as a marker for our changing relationship with the land and our sense of “natural beauty”. Lisa views her pieces as paintings which also happen to be functional vases. Siobhan Jones joined the Guild last year, specialising in the creation of one-off signed pieces of kiln-formed glass. Siobhan is greatly inspired by light in all its different qualities and the part it can play in bringing life to an object. She works exclusively with high quality translucent and opalescent glass, which is tested for colour compatibility. Shaping thin canes of glass, layering colour and the positioning of the glass creates additional depth in the
most recent two dimensional wall installations for the corporate and domestic interior, a contemporary twist to the traditional picture. Stuart Jenkins creates items of jewellery and silverware, using traditional techniques, but always with an eye to the future. His works retain the marks and evidence of the hand making process, but he also likes to contrast these with areas finished in other ways, showing the versatile nature of his chosen material, silver. A recent collaboration with ceramicist Tony Foard has opened another creative chapter, and larger scale pieces are beginning to show what can happen when two contrasting materials are bought together. Metalworker John Pomfrey will be showing his unique Lotus Flower water feature alongside his contemporary bespoke metal furniture. John wanted to create a metal water feature that was very individual & sculptural as well as provide a challenge to his artistic and engineering skills. John decided that a lotus flower would be an ideal structure and because it also symbolizes spiritual enlightenment. Inside the flower he formed metal “stamens” which contribute to the visual effect of the water, creating an inverted lotus flower shape. The sculpture is completed by light catching green and blue glass pebbles. Other works on show and for sale will include: textured kiln fired glass bowls; semi-abstract porcelain bird forms; embellished textiles; fine wood furniture; light reflective & iridescent lusterware; seamless felt vessels; enriched textured wall hangings; wax resist paintings on silk and wood engravings; bold and sculptural precious metal and gemstone jewellery; contemporary metalwork; and wood turned bowls and hollow forms. Many of the pieces will make ideal gifts or decorative accessories around the home or for use in the garden. Visitors will also have the opportunity to talk to the craftsmen about their work and to see several craft demonstrations. All this will be complimented by the glorious setting of Pashley Manor Gardens with the hot borders coming into their own at this time of year, including anemones, asters and dahlias amongst the late flowering plants. Visitors will be able to enjoy light lunches, refreshments and afternoon teas on the terrace overlooking the moat, in the Jubilee Courtyard or inside the licensed Garden Room Café. The whole event should make a delightful day out for visitors. The opening times are 10am to 5pm and the special entry price of £5.50 includes admission to the gardens and the Craft Show. For further information please see www.thesussexguild.co.uk or telephone Pashley Manor Gardens on 01580 200888 wwwpashleymanorgardens.com.

Top Of The Cherry Tree By James McNeil The Cherry Tree in is tucked away on a quiet road in Ticehurst In East Sussex. We had heard good things about the food there, so decided to investigate. With a new place to eat I always try two things before ordering-the house wine and the gents! Basically, if a venue cannot get these two basics right, then what chance has the food. We pulled into the car park to see well tended lawns with a nice outside dining area, each table furnished with candles and the big sky view for free. Inside we found a friendly rustic pub atmosphere with a crowd that reflected the area. The horse fraternity were present with accompanying children, dogs and Range Rovers. Commuters, farmers and others made for a nice mix. My house wine, an agreeable Merlot, was excellent, while the toilets were scrubbed and spotless. The bar is beamed, with rough stone floors, a fireplace with candles and an unusual brick and wood bar. Comfy sofas, a fat clock and blinds complete the picture. The Cherry Tree serve and excellent pint of Harveys too. We checked the menu, simple and straightforward with four starters and eleven mains plus the Sunday Roasts. Seven puddings leave you spoilt for choice. For a traditional pub venue setting the menu appears modern and varied. Starters have King Scallops with rocket salad, parmesan and a sweet chilli sauce-or try the Cherry Tree Salad with hot bacon, sliced new potatoes, poached egg and French dressing. For mains there is Rump Steak flambeed in cognac, Home Made Chicken and Mushroom Pie and then a nod from abroad with dishes such as Tagliatelli with sun blushed peppers, Baked Aubergine and Cajun Spiced Chicken Breast.
We ended with a flourish- Hot Chocolate Sponge with chocolate sauce, too good to leave but it finished us off completely. The Cherry Tree will leave you lingering, we enjoyed an agreeable three hours at the place. You will not want to leave the lazy laid back atmosphere and the excellent service from staff will keep you more than happy. For young families this pub is child friendly, but they will not be obtrusive for other couples. You can order lower priced kids portions and they can let off steam outside in the play area. The food is superb, fresh and very reasonably priced Hats off to the proprietors here, they have created a nice balance that will make you want to come back again and again. The Cherry Tree Inn, Dale Hill, Ticehurst. TN5 7DG. Phone 01580 201229.
Through to the carpeted dining area where the lighting is subdued and intimate. We took charge of our starters. My Moules Marinere with rough bread and a wonderful creamy sauce were magnificent. Cooked just so, fresh and vibrant. My main was Pan Fried Fillets of Sea Bass. Crisp outside, soft and flaky inside Beautifully presented with broccoli, French beans and a heavenly mixed herb dressing. Magnificent. Helen went traditional with the Sunday Lamb Roast but once again presented with modern flair. An excellent 2007 Chilean Chardonnay named Santa Serena rounded the main course off perfectly. Once again this was spot on, so we can now heartily recommend Sunday Roast at The Cherry Tree!

English wine on your doorstep - and a great day out at Carr Taylor Vineyards at Westfield The Romans made it, medieval monks made it and now we are making it again. There is nothing unusual about English wine. Although we can’t yet drive through miles of sweeping vineyards there are nonetheless over 800 hectares of vines in the U.K. and a little under 400 producers. The climate in England produces wines that are perfect for turning into fizz. This has been proved with English sparklers consistently winning awards in international wine tastings
Carr Taylor Vineyards also boast a superb range of aromatic English white and rosé wines that capture the essence of an English summer. The most recent addition to the Carr Taylor range is a delicious selection of versatile fruit wines including ginger and mead, fermented and matured to a traditional Sussex recipe. Three of these fruit wines won awards at the 2006 Great Taste Awards winning Gold for the Ginger, Silver for the Mead and Bronze for the Cherry.
David & Linda Carr Taylor established the vineyard, in the beautiful 1066 countryside just north of Hastings, more than 30 years ago and quickly gained international recognition for their award winning English wines. This area is very fortunate in having a free-draining sandy soil over ironstone. This gives the grapes and therefore the wine, a delicious, fruity, fully-bodied flavour, which is not found elsewhere.
The Carr Taylor Estate is open to the public everyday and visitors can take a vineyard trail, which gives information on the vineyard and vines. This is then followed by a visit to the winery and bottling room to see the vats and presses and learn some of the wine-making techniques. Finally, visitors can return to the shop to sample some of the wines and browse in the well-stocked gift shop. Visitors can also picnic by the pond with a glass of chilled wine, or opt for teas, coffees and cakes in the shop. Guided tours for groups are available by prior arrangement. Carr Taylor Vineyards is open daily from 10am - 5pm. Entrance is free You can find us at Wheel Lane, Westfield, Hastings, TN35 4SG .
In 1985 they were one of the first to pioneer commercial English sparkling wine for which their reputation is now firmly established, winning many awards including a Gold medal in 1988 & 1999 in the Challenge International du Vin. Their son, Alexander, has joined the company as winemaker, and after gaining winemaking experience in New Zealand and Oregon. In 2004 he won the Vintners Scholarship and Vintners’ Cup, the highest award of the International WSET wine diploma. His passion, in England’s cool climate, is producing fresh, clean, fruit driven English wines. Varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as Bacchus, Kerner and Schonburger provide a magical blend of old and new flavours. Situated in the picturesque heart of rural Sussex, the vineyard also has its own traditional winery and visitor centre, The Carr Taylor Vineyards use of the classic Traditional Method of bottled fermentation and modern machinery has effervesced to produce a stunning range of award winning Quality English Sparkling wines.

Traditional Country Classics and more at the Cock Inn We had received some glowing second hand reports of this country pub, so decided to check the food for ourselves. Featured in the Good Pub Food Guide and the Good Beer Guide, the Cock Inn nestles in Boughton Monchelsea at the heart of the Kent countryside amongst the oast houses and hop farms.
We suggest you try for yourself. Cock Inn. Heath Road, Boughton Monchelsea, Kent ME174JD. Tel 01622 743166. Email cockinnboughtonmonchelsea@hotmail.com
A handsome 15th century building with whitewashed brick and tiles, The pub is picture postcard pretty with a terraced patio area sheltered by trees and canvass umbrellas. Inside the bar is warm and friendly with a busy, bustling atmosphere. In the restaurant the décor reflects the countryside and the agricultural heritage of the locals. The brickwork, beams, barrels, fireplaces and old farming implements are easy on the eye. An ancient inscription engraved on a beam divests words of wisdom to the diners: “Like the waves make towards the shore, so do our minutes hasten to their end” I pondered on this moot point, then hastened to order another excellent pint. No time to waste! On that note we hurried to choose from the impressive menu, which is supplemented by the extras adorning the blackboards. It is as you would hope- traditional country fare with something for everyone. The wine list is also expansive, and you can choose from a selection of house wines too. On the list was a Celliers de la Roche, a crisp and oakey 2006. For bitter lovers try the guest beer, Tribute from Cornwall. My starter of pate with a light salad and rough home baked bread was tremendous, as was a delicious vegetable soup which we highly recommend. Also on the starters and on our table were some beautiful Tiger Prawns, spot on! Along followed the mains. My braised lamb shoulder, cooked overnight to a traditional recipe was the best lamb I have tasted in 20 years of reviewing food in Sussex and Kent. Soft and tender, falling off the bone and in a delicious sauce. Vegetables, perfect and plainly fresh from the Kent earth. The fish pie which included prawns, haddock and salmon was immaculate. So often a dish that so many restaurants make a pigs ear of, but not at the Cock. We ended with Fudge cake, heaven on earth. The Cock Inn comes highly recommended from us. The service was friendly and informal, the atmosphere was relaxed, the food exceptional. Tightly managed by the owners, the place runs in a polished and professional fashion. 37

what you’ll need... Ingredients: 4 200g / 7oz Freedom Food labelled salmon steaks good pinch of salt 1 garlic clove 1/2 tsp ground pepper 1/2 tsp ground oregano zest and juice of 1 unwaxed lemon 2 tbsp of olive oil for the salsa rosso: 1 jar of pre-roasted red peppers (available in supermarkets, or roast your own) 8 cherry tomatoes 1/2 tsp salt pinch of white sugar stir-fried broccoli and courgettes with new potatoes, to serve
method... Pre-set the oven to 190°C / 375F / Gas Mark 5. Place all the dry ingredients in a pestle and mortar and grind to a paste. Finish by adding the zest and juice of lemon and olive oil. Place a sheet of tin foil on an oven tray and lightly smear with olive oil. Place the salmon fillets on a plate, smear over the dressing and transfer to baking sheet. Place to one side. For the salsa rosso, finely chop the red peppers and tomatoes, add the salt and sugar and blend together with a fork. Set to one side. Pork Chops with Cherries - Serves 4 what you’ll need... Ingredients: 4 175g / 6oz Freedom Food labelled loin pork chops, off the bone sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 25g / 1oz butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, sliced 150ml / 1/4 pint dry white wine 16-20 cherries, washed and stalks removed 225ml / 8fl oz double cream selection of seasonal vegetables, to serve
In the same pan, melt the remaining butter with the remaining oil, add the onion and cook gently over a moderate heat to soften for about 5-7 minutes.
method...
Then pour in the wine and stir, scraping the pan to deglaze. Return the pork chops to the pan, cover and cook gently for about 15 minutes or until the pork chops are cooked right through. You might need to check in case all the wine has evaporated and the pork is in danger of catching, in which case just add some more wine or water.
Season the pork chops with salt and pepper. Melt half of the butter with half of the oil in a pan over quite a high heat. Then cook the pork chops to seal in the juices and to brown them slightly for about 3-4 minutes on each side. Remove the chops from the pan and drain off the fat.
Reduce the heat down to low, add the cherries and cook for a further couple of minutes. Remove the chops from the pan and keep warm. Add the cream, turn up the heat and cook rapidly to reduce the sauce. Pour over the pork chops and serve immediately. Serve with a selection of vegetables. 39

Beat Stress: Simple Stress-Busters Almost 14 million working days are lost due to stress every single year, yet over 80% of workers say they would rather phone in sick with flu or another problem than admit they were stressed. We're working longer hours, sleeping less than ever and pressure at work has never been so stressful. A third of UK workers cannot get to sleep at night because of anxiety - and three-quarters find they are unable to ‘switch off’ when they leave the office. Read on to find out about the health risks of stress – plus some simple stress-reducing tips. Stress: The Health Risks Think stress is not important? Then consider these scary ways stress could be causing havoc with your health without you even realising it. • Stress can cause panic attacks, insomnia, eczema, psoriasis, stomach and chest pain, hair loss, nausea and diarrhoea, giddiness and muscle pain, plus ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome. • There’s a well-known deadly link between stress and heart disease. Hormones released by feeling stressed out change your metabolism and increase your blood pressure, both risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. • Stress also hugely increases your risk of heart attacks and strokes, even in young women. It’s because stress reduces oestrogen levels, which usually protect women against osteoporosis and hardened arteries until after menopause. • Some studies have shown stress may cause cancer cells to resist treatment. • Studies have even found that stress suffered by pregnant women can harm their unborn children. • Stress plays a huge role in chronic fatigue syndrome – a debilitating fatigue that can also include muscle aches, fever and sleep disturbances. • Research has even shown that stress kills brain cells. Stress Busters: Get some exercise. It’s well known that physical activity reduces
42
anxiety and stress, and it’s not just because it’s a distraction from the causes of stress. One recent study published in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, for example, found that exercise has a significant impact on anxiety, and reduces stress for some time afterwards. Play with a pet. Several studies have shown that caring for an animal reduces stress. Recent US research, for example, found that people with pet dogs experience just one fifth of the typical anxiety, blood pressure hikes and heart rate risks people generally experience in stressful situations. Get some green. Growing a garden or even a pot plant could make a huge difference to your stress levels. There’s a growing body of research giving credibility to the widely held belief that nature can improve health. For example, one recent US study showed that adding greenery or a garden to hospital environments reduces stress significantly among patients, visitors and staff – plus it even lessened patient's pain in some cases. Do some mind-body meditation. Research suggests that meditating helps you cope better with stress, and one recent Chinese study shows that it is also lessens related feelings of anxiety, depression, anger and fatigue. In fact, the theory is that stress is actually a flexible skill that can be trained. Have an aromatherapy massage. Scientists have finally confirmed what most of us have known all along – that aromatherapy massages, especially when accompanied by music, dramatically reduce stress levels. Researchers for the Journal of Clinical Nursing found that 60 per cent of nursing staff suffered from moderate to extreme anxiety – but this fell to just eight per cent once staff had received just 15 minutes of aromatherapy massages while listening to relaxing new-age music. Get back to nature for challenging outdoor activities. Researchers for the Journal of Leisure Research found that taking a hike or going rock climbing, backpacking or canoeing reduces stress and improves self confidence; and that people who are able to tackle unpredictable physical demands are also better equipped to cope with unexpected challenges and mental and emotional stress. In fact, they even discovered that physically fit people have lower levels of stress hormones.

PTA Pages Helps Schools Through Credit Crunch With the credit crunch bringing spiralling living costs, from fuel and food to interest rates, families are seeing their budgets stretched to the limit and are grateful for any sign of discount or opportunity to receive preferential prices. PTA Pages ( http://www.ptapages.co.uk ), a new resource for parents, grandparents and teachers, is designed to minimise the essential costs of living by offering discounts in the community and on the high street for everything from plumbing to uniforms and piano lessons to electrical goods, while at the same time helping local PTAs. PTA Pages provides members with a database of discounted products and services which are available through other members, coupled with specially negotiated deals with high street retailers, including an unlimited usage of a 7% discount in dozens of high street stores. Members will also be able to advertise their second hand items across their local LEA free of charge using PTA Pages classifieds service. Registration with PTA Pages costs £3.50 per annum and provides members with full access to the search facility, allowing them to search through the business categories and find deals with up to 30% off in their school, town or LEA area. The discount is easy to use; once a deal has been selected the member can print a voucher from PTA Pages which contains their name, membership number and details of the discount or offer.
and 50 pence from the membership fee will be forwarded to that school’s PTA to use as they wish within the school. Parents, other family members and local businesses can join PTA Pages as an advertiser and display their products and services in the database for the school of their choice. Advertisers can offer special deals and discounts to other members and are encouraged to offer between 5% and 30%. All advert details can be edited by accessing the advertisers’ login area and advert editor. Photos, graphics and hyperlinks to websites can also be added. Advertisers can advertise for as little as £10 per annum and £40 for an enhanced listing. Jules Farrington-Griffiths, director of PTA Pages, says: “PTA Pages was inspired by an incident that happened at a school event. Chatting with other parents, I discovered that one was a carpet fitter; as we’d recently had a carpet fitted we mentioned that, had we known, we would have used him. He responded by saying that he would have offered us ‘mates rates’. We realised that a network for parents which offered discounted rates on products and services would be enormously advantageous to parents and teachers and the concept was born.” PTA Pages can be found at http://www.ptapages.co.uk and more information is available from Jules or Kate on 01562 752028.

Bognor Regis Community College Wins Army Schools Challenge Students from Bognor Regis Community College were overjoyed when they beat off tough competition from 22 schools to win this year's Army Schools Challenge. Over four hundred students from across Sussex attended the day on Thursday 26th June, held at Worthing Rugby Football Club, taking part in a range of round robin Army activities designed to test teamwork, communication and stamina. Second place on the day was awarded to Boundstone Community College, Lancing with third place going to Angmering School, Littlehampton. Major Carol Miller, event organiser said, "The students really excelled and got stuck into all the activities. Everyone, including the soldiers and teachers had a fantastic day and some of the students showed a real interest in career opportunities in the Regular and Territorial Army. "The military based activities they took part in relate back to the different trades in the Army and scenarios soldiers may come across. Along with the 140 different trades within the seven career groups, the students have also learnt other aspects of Army life; the travel, training, educational qualifications, pay and camaraderie. "We would like to thank all the soldiers from the eleven regiments who supported, trained and mentored the students throughout the day. Everyone is looking forward to coming back for the seventh Army Schools Challenge!" The winning schools were selected from a range of criteria including speed, accuracy and performance. Students from Bognor Regis Community College won a range of latest sporting equipment for their school along with individual prizes for each student in the team. More To Brewers Than You Think Brewers Shoes and Repair Service were first established way back in 1926. Trevor Howard, the current owner, has been with the company for 26 years, and has owned the business for nearly 3 years. The shop prides itself on providing individual service and care. Brewers stock a large range of quality shoes and leather goods for both ladies and gents, including Padders, Lotus, Ara, Loakes, Ecco, DB, Scholl and many more. Regatta Outdoor Clothing for both ladies and gents can also be found. Brewers also have a workshop that carries out first class repairs, including leather soles and heels, using traditional methods. The workshop also has a key cutting section and there is also a dry cleaning service. The most recent addition has been to add a separate children’s shop, which now allows Brewers to continue measuring and fitting children’s footwear, but with a much broader range. Hush Puppies are just one of the brands of children’s shoes in stock with their individual ‘fit both feet’ system enabling each foot to be fitted with the correct width fitting. Other brands in stock are Ecco, Buckle My Shoe, Geox and Bloch dance shoes. Another string to the Brewers bow you may not be aware of is the hair and clothing accessories now available. There are now plenty of good reasons to call in to Brewers, so drop in to their showrooms at The Corner House, King Street, Sandwich, Kent CT13 9BT.
Ian Fleming named 007’s Miss Moneypenny and Bond girl Honey after farms in South-East England! 2008 being the centenary year of James Bond author Ian Fleming, it seems an appropriate time that new important information regarding the creation of some of the author’s most famous characters should be revealed for the first time. Known for his laconic and wry sense of humour, Fleming when asked during an interview in the 1960s how he went about creating his heroines replied: “I go out into Romney Marsh and hope to find one there!” Can it possibly be true that secret agent 007’s ever-faithful Miss Moneypenny and the beachcombing Honeychile Rider from Fleming’s James Bond novel DR. NO were named after farms in the English countryside? Editor & publisher Graham Rye, who recently relocated his 007 MAGAZINE Archive office and home to Lydd, Romney Marsh in Kent, believes they were, and that he’s discovered resounding proof that Ian Fleming did in fact name these characters, and others besides, after place names the author would easily have found on an Ordnance Survey map of the area in Kent where Fleming lived during the Fifties. In his new extensively illustrated article, ‘From Kent, With Love: Ian Fleming & James Bond - The Kentish Connection’, published exclusively on the 007 MAGAZINE website, Graham Rye explains how a casual throwaway remark by Fleming in an interview in the 1960s led him to investigate the possible truth behind this statement by the Bond author with fascinating and surprising results. The 007 MAGAZINE Archive and website is the world’s foremost James Bond resource! www.007magazine.co.uk 52

LOCAL CHURCHES
The impressive parish church of St Mary’s, Hailsham reflects the town’s former status as the premier cattle market town of East Sussex, first granted a Market Charter by Henry III in 1252, and its later importance as a busy railway terminus. Although such halcyon days are long gone, the church, situated in the heart of the town but now obscured from the High Street and hidden behind the glass and concrete of shops and supermarkets in the old market square, has the fading grandeur of a graceful old lady serene in her position whilst the twenty-first century swirls past on all sides. Nevertheless, due to its elevated position the church tower can often be seen from a distance and at one time was an important reference point for fowlers and smugglers on the Pevensey marshes. The first definitive mention of the church was in 1229 when Gilbert de Aquila of Pevensey Castle, having newly founded Michelham Priory, granted the right to present a clergyman with a “living on the church of Haylesham”. Before this little is known about the church and except for a portion of the north wall, and a double headed decorated capital, probably from the top of a column, and now in a niche in the Lady Chapel, nothing remains of the original building. The present church, built in the perpendicular style, is believed to date from the early 15th century although it has since undergone extensive renovations. The square tower, some 70 feet in height, is built in chequers of flint and squared stones topped with battlements and a pinnacle at each corner, bearing weather vanes. The main vane rising from the tower bears the date 1801 and the initials of the churchwardens at that time. The remainder of the church is essentially the work of 19th century architects, craftsmen and restorers thus reflecting the prosperity and God-fearing nature of Hailsham townsfolk in the Victorian era. The windows are a particularly attractive feature of St Mary’s. In the north wall there is a three-arch trefoil window in memory of Eliza Sherwood of Ersham Lodge, depicting Faith, Hope and Charity. This was the only church window to survive being shattered when a bomb fell nearby in 1943. The magnificent east window was designed by Charles Knight of Brighton with the glass painted by J.M.J. Brand. The cost was defrayed by monies due under the War Damage Commission and the window unveiled by the Bishop of Chichester on 4th July 1954.
There are a number of notable memorials on the church walls and in the churchyard. Of special interest is the wall plaque inscribed “one soweth and another reapeth” dedicated to two members of the Harvey family who were Vicars of St Mary’s, Rev G.G. Harvey (1846 to 1872), and Rev F.C. Harvey (1873 to 1923). A remarkable record of father and son ministering to the people of Hailsham for 76 years. The churchyard includes the last resting place of Francis Howlett, the first parish schoolmaster who died aged 80 in 1831. This unusual wooden memorial is inscribed with words from Oliver Goldsmith’s poem ‘The Deserted Village’: “There in the former Vestry, skilled to rule, The village master taught his little school: But past is all his fame, the very spot Where many a time he triumphed, is forgot”. Although much of the music in the church was, and still is, provided by wind and string instruments, an interesting feature is the organ. The present instrument, by Forster and Andrews of Hull, dates from 1877 and was obtained in 1952 by Rev M.C. Chapman (Vicar 1930 to 1967) from the Royal National College for the Blind, known originally as the Royal Normal College. As funds were limited the organ was purchased in bits and pieces and assembled in the church over three years. The opportunity was also taken to re-site the organ at the rear of the church. Thanks to the generosity of Cicely Lusted as a gift in loving memory of her parents, James and Alice Douch of Downash Manor Farm, a much needed extension, in the form of the Church Lounge, was added in 1985. Now in daily use as the venue for church activities which include Guides, Brownies, Pathfinders, Hamelsham Handbells, Homemakers, The Creative Craft Group, The FAB Club (an after school club for children ages 6-10), St Mary’s Tiny Tots, and The Bite-In, a café serving tea/coffee and light snacks. . The church caters for a wide range of age groups, illustrating the modern outlook of the current vicar, Rev David Bourne and his curate, Rev John Brook. This is maintained through the church’s informative web-site, www.stmarys-hailsham.org.uk, which includes a web-page “What We Believe”. An apt reminder that whilst much has altered over the centuries, the spiritual message of St Mary’s, to young and old in Hailsham, remains unchanged. By Roger Paine. 53

The Art Of Photography With Kent Based Liz Garnett Kent based photographer Liz Garnett, is currently celebrating the success of her sixth open studio which was in June. As part of South East Open Studios Liz opens her workspace to visitors who can view her photography and discuss it’s creation. Of this event Liz said: “I take part in SEOS every year as it is a great way of showing a wider selection of work than would normally be seen in a gallery setting. It also gives me the opportunity to talk about my work with visitors and get a feel for what they like about my work.” It also opens up opportunities for commissions. Having sold more pictures than ever at this years event it doesn’t give Liz the opportunity to sit back and put her feet up. Luckily she has an incredible amount of energy and is full of enthusiasm. This, coupled with her resourcefulness and ability to throw herself pro-actively into
of her style of work. She uses her technical knowledge of films and processes to create vibrant images. Her work is grouped into a number of series to give clients the option of buying several complementary photographs. They are also available in a variety of sizes as well as display options. The flower photographs developed from her love of abstract photography which she still dips into from time to time. Many of her abstracts are taken around the Kent coast. On a number of occasions her photographs have been mistaken for paintings, which pleases Liz as she aims for her work to straddle photography and traditional art. Reading through the comments in her visitors book you can see that her work is greatly admired with it being described as “imaginative”, “creative” and “inspirational”. her various artistic projects, will be needed in the coming months as she gets to work on new exhibitions. Her calendar for the next six months is already getting booked up and she is working on obtaining exhibitions further afield. As well as exhibiting her work in the South East, she has also exhibited her work in London, including the prestigious Cork Street, as well as mainland Europe. Liz is becoming known for her vibrant flower pictures. The unnatural colours and striking abstract quality of the flowers are becoming typical
For the last 15 years Liz has been a commercial and art photographer. She started her career in London and then moved to Calais for two years and has now been in Kent for almost 12 years. Commercially her work has sold to the likes of Harpers and Queen, Cambridge University Press and Phaidon. Internationally, she is represented by Superstock picture agency in the United States as well as Alamy in the UK. Both agencies sell internationally and her work has sold as far as Japan. Not content with just creating her work, Liz also makes her photography available for rent to local businesses. Thus bringing the art gallery into offices and providing a pleasant and stimulating working environment. Liz Garnett's affordable artwork rental gives local business the opportunity of changing the artworks on their walls on a regular basis. Artwork can be selected from Liz's large portfolio of images or commissioned. Images include flowers, still life, abstracts, Kent beach scenes and landscapes. Alternatively she can source photography, paintings or textiles from other local artists. The 250-Year-Old Dutch Wine Glass Found By Wing-Commander Makes £24,000 At Bonhams In London An exquisitely engraved Dutch wine glass that dates from 1759, the top lot in Bonhams sale of The Thomas Collection on June 4, sold for £24,000. This stunning wine glass was the key find of an ex RAF wingcommander, Ron Thomas who created one of the finest collections of glass in the UK. The fine Dutch engraved light-baluster goblet of English origin, signed by Jacob Sang, was made at a time when the Netherlands maritime power was a global force. The glass has a finely engraved funnel bowl featuring a three-masted sailing ship in a harbour scene, with bales and casks being loaded on to horse-drawn sleds. The reverse shows a stylised view of the Old Customs House in Amsterdam with the goods being weighed. The glass has a slender multi-knopped stem and wide conical foot. This distinguished glass was estimated to sell for £12,000-18,000 at Bonhams in New Bond Street, but at the auction made £24,000 after very keen bidding from a packed saleroom. The Thomas collection is “representative of some of the best examples of 18th century English glass and provided a great opportunity for established and new connoisseurs to purchase fine individual drinking glasses at levels to suit all pockets.” said Simon Cottle, Head of Continental Ceramics & Glass at Bonhams. The Thomas Collection was the work of Ron and Mary Thomas. Born in 1919 Ron Thomas spent his childhood in St John’s Wood in London. A regular Sunday activity for him and his brothers was to go for long walks which quite often ended up at the Victoria and Albert Museum. This start in the decorative arts was to grow and become a large part of his life. He had a long career in the RAF serving in the Far East where he achieved the rank of Wing Commander. He retired from active service but continued working for the Air Ministry. His wife Mary also served with the RAF in the Women’s section and spent time in a posting to Egypt. Ron’s collecting began in the late 1940’s and from 1962 he concentrated on building a collection of drinking glasses from 1680 onwards. In 1972 the couple moved to Midsomer Norton near Bath
where they opened an antiques shop – Somervale Antiques. To assist his collecting for the shop he gutted an old Volkswagen beetle, just leaving the driver’s seat so that he could load the maximum amount into the car. Thus outfitted he ranged from Scotland to Brighton collecting and would on occasion strap two long-case clocks to the roof rack and drive the length of the country. As his reputation grew he and his wife joined the fair circuit starting with the Assembly Rooms in Bath where they were introduced to Princess Alexandra. After Mary’s death in 1987 Ron continued running the shop and attend fairs. Eventually in 2003 he shut the shop and sold the stock at auction. Over the years his personal collection was shown to a select few and some of the best glass was displayed in the Glass Circle Diamond Jubilee in London in 1997. At the age of 88 he sold this wonderful collection at Bonhams.

IN A WORD... PERFECT! Kent and Sussex are graced with a decorating company whos promise is ‘perfection’. Not a word to be taken for granted and not one that is used enough today. Aspect County went to find out more.
W
alking around a newly decorated house with Mike Hazell-Smith, owner of The Perfect Painting Company you are struck by his incredible knowledge and the commitment he shows not only to his clients but to their buildings. His undeniable understanding of the property shows in the way he talks about the preparation, the tailored products he uses and the various and correct finishes that can be given to each and every surface. ‘For instance’, says Mike, as we walk through a Georgian drawing room in a private house just outside Sevenoaks, ‘we have a lot of plaster work here where the intricate moulding can become clogged and lose its form if a skin-forming paint is used. We used a softer, chalk based paint that will coat in one layer and yet be thin enough to take the shape of the mouldings without forming a heavy skin and dulling the shape’. It’s only after being in the business for over twenty years that Mike can positively know the right product for each building. ‘We have great building history in this area of the country and it saddens me when you see, say

an 18th century cottage peeling and showing signs of damp because it can’t breath though the wrong exterior paint’. Mike is proud of his decorating teams too. ‘They’re a great bunch of workers’ he says with a smile, ‘nothing is to too much trouble and they’ve all learned the way I like The Perfect Painting Company to work and the way I like things done. We’re a company who is proud of its heritage and we live up to our promise... First class service and no compromise on quality. We’ve lived by our promise since we started in 1984 and we’ll live by it forever’. Contact Mike on 01892 660101. (or email him on: info@perfectpainting.com) Working out a complete schedule of works to fit around you and your life he will show you the cost every step of the way so that there are no hidden extras. Experience with any type of building, any age and in any condition means The Perfect Panting Company know that they can keep their promise! Designs on your blinds Established in 1989, Blind Design is a family business providing quality blinds and curtains at competitive prices for both the domestic and commercial markets. With an enviable reputation for service and customer satisfaction, Blind Design prides itself on the high levels of recommendation and repeat business it receives. An independent manufacturer of all types of blinds and curtains, Blind Design has access to all the latest fabric designs. The latest technology is utilised to ensure consistent quality and whenever possible to use UK components. The latest addition to the Blind Design range is Perfect Fit conservatory blinds. Perfect Fit is one of the most attractive and innovative window blinds on the market today. The system is unique because the window blind fits neatly into a stylish frame, which moves together with the windows, doors and roofs when they are opened and closed. Easy to install with no drilling or screwing required into your window or door frames, Perfect Fit also leaves your window sill clutter free and can be removed in seconds for easy cleaning. Reduced gaps at the edge of the blinds increases privacy. Another improvement over the last few years is electric and battery powered motorised systems. Your blinds will last longer as they move more smoothly, with the cords winding up neatly so preventing sticking and uneven operation. In addition, sensors and timers enable autonomous use, regardless of whether someone is at home or not. Sun sensors increase protection of furniture and furnishings and reduce heat build up. Remote control is the solution when the window treatment is not easily reached for manual operation. Remember, Blind Design manufacture all types of blinds available today from venetians to verticals, rollers to romans, pleated to pinoleum, shutters and awnings. All of the same high quality with service to match. You can call Blind Design, who supply free no obligation quotes in your home on 01323 501556.

The McLay passion for fine design and furniture ituated in the hills below the picturesque village of Mayfield. you can find Mclay Furniture. Simon Mclay has been designing and making beautiful bespoke furniture since 1987, and has recently added some stunning new designs to his own range.
S
He specialises in solid hardwood, and his pieces are all constructed using traditional techniques, finished to a superior standard resulting in a unique, tactile quality. He also has a strict policy of using top grade, hand selected timber, taken only from F S C sources. Spending time to get to know people, their surroundings and taste, it is always his greatest joy delivering furniture that surpasses expectation. In his own words “ For the last 10 years I have been designing furniture outside of the necessary constraints of the bespoke market. It has been said that a chair, if designed well, should be beautiful from every angle, why not all furniture?â€? His new flagship piece, the four poster bed is certainly that, and is the culmination of five years of development, mixing curves and straight lines in a way that has become his signature. His customers return to him time and time again, knowing they can trust him to provide the finest workmanship and to translate their ideas intuitively from classical to avant garde. Recently he has been involved in the slightly controversial refurbishment of Mayfield Church, providing the new west side furniture incorporating a library. On its completion, even the most reactionary of its congregation had to admit the new look and quality of the work to be truly beautiful. In conjunction with his handmade furniture, Simon also has the latest technology to produce staircases and caters for batch production. Whatever you should need, from bedroom, dining room, sitting room, to garden furniture, or even, perhaps, a four poster bed for the more discerning dog, you should visit Simon at Mclay furniture in Mayfield. Garage Conversion Company Join the garage revolution Transform your garage for less than the cost of an extension or moving by Jon Hill. Got a useless garage stuffed full of rubbish? From around £10,000 – less than the cost of building an extension you could transform it into a bigger kitchen or utility room, or make space for a granny flat. If your garage has been reduced to a dumping ground for anything that doesn’t fit in the house - old chairs, carpets and the rowing machine that never left the box – it could be time to make better use of it. Garage conversions are relatively straight forward costing around £10,000 with a little more for a double, its more cost effective than adding an extension or loft conversion. Turning your garage into an extra room can also be profitable. Most conversions will add more value to the house than the cost of carrying out the work. The extra living space will add to the appeal of the detached fourbedroom house and could increase the value of property by 20%. Stuart Flint of Estate Agents Knight Frank was recently quoted in The Sunday Times saying “A garage conversion can increase the value of a house by as much as 20%” with the cautionary note “Providing that, if your house is at the upper end of the housing market, there is enough space to build a garage, either integral or detached. At the lower end of the market, you have to ensure there’s enough outside parking space”. Phil Bateman, Managing Director of GCC, says; “people don’t use their garages for putting their cars in, so if they need more living space, they can either move house or, for £10,000 or less – the amount you pay in fees and moving costs – we can give them extra space by converting their garage. A normal single garage measures 150sq ft, which makes for a good size living room, bedroom or office”. Planning permission is not usually needed, but anybody who is planning such a conversion should check with the local authority, a job GCC will do for you. For any further information you can call 0800 5870262, email info@garageconversion.com or visit www.garageconversion.com

FIREPLACES
Fire That Burns Downwards: Country Warmth Introduces The Revolutionary New Xeoos Twinfire For thousands of years man has become accustomed to sitting round a fire and watching as the flames dance upwards, but now that’s all about to change. When it comes to design, an architect wants to be an originator, looking for something that gives their client individuality. Now, with the launch of xeoos’ TwinFire, a room can be transformed with the world’s first inverted wood burning fire. This stylish and ergonomically-designed stove cleverly draws flames downwards to a visible bottom fire chamber. Not only does this make for a design-first but the TwinFire boasts an efficiency rate of 93%, making it one of the World’s most environmentally-friendly stoves. As Kent’s premiere fireplace retailer Country Warmth realizes that times are changing. With more and more people looking for alternative, environmentally friendly ways of heating their home it’s increasingly important that retailers innovate and strive to Quench our new insatiable green appetite, which is why Country Warmth are introducing the new Xeoos TwinFire to its ever increasing eco-friendly product range. The Xeoos TwinFire Has achieved excellent results in the prestigious Scandinavian Green Swan award, the official Nordic ecolabel which is awarded to products with ‘green’ credentials. The glass doors don’t need constant cleaning and are kept free of soot. This is achieved as the glass in both the firing chambers are flooded with fresh air, ensuring that the exhaust gases are kept within this fresh air veil, having no contact with the glass.

Site of the most memorable event in British history,Battle is a charming market town which manages to combine its historic past with a flourishing present. When entering the town from the north, the imposing gatehouse of Battle Abbey looms up dead ahead, solid and majestic. It is perhaps at its most picturesque seen on a summer's evening, when the eye travels past the Green, through the massive portals, and towards the whole scene giving an impression of centuries-old security and comfort. Inside the famous Battle Abbey School is sited within ancient abbey walls. Clustering round the skirts of the Abbey are a host of ancient buildings, many going back to medieval times, narrow alleyways, former stabling, and a wide variety of shops and restaurants, yet immediately behind them are fields where multi-coloured herds of cattle peacefully chew the cud. You can walk through the beautiful Sussex countryside all the way to Pevensey from here, following William the Conquerer's footsteps in reverse. Opposite the Abbey is Yesterdays World, well worth a visit, and inside the Abbey is the Tourist Information Centre, where you can get details of the many special events going on in the town throughout the year.In the Summer is the week-long Battle Festival, and in the autumn is the re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings 1066, followed in November by spectacular Battle Bonfire. The Battlefield itself hosts a number of special events ranging from re-enactments if Civil War battles to the Battle Proms. Visitors wishing to stay in the town to enjoy all these festivities and the many places of interest in the surrounding countryside will find a wide selection of accommodation, from good Country House Hotels
(Powdermills}to bed and breakfast in picturesque cottages. The Green immediately outside the Abbey Gates provides the perfect site for the farmers market held on Saturdays, where you can buy tasty cheeses, home-made cakes, organic meat and a wide variety of organic food. Those with discerning taste buds will be pleased to know that there are also good specialist shops and delicatessens selling organic food close by in the High Street . There are art galleries where you can purchase paintings by the many excellent artists in the locality, a book shop, and a whole host of craft shops and antique shops. Most are locally owned, and offer customers a personal service. They are just the place to find unusual and tasteful gifts. At the top end of the town is Market Square, with a supermarket for the weekly shopping, independent specialist shops and eating places, and plenty of parking. Market day is on Fridays. As well as interesting shops, there are plenty of sports and health facilities available in Battle, with walking, riding, and fishing all with in easy reach. There is a wide choice of good pubs, restaurants and tea rooms, almost all of them historic buildings. Recommended venues are Powdermills, The Pilgrims nestling beside the Abbey walls, Nobles futher along in the high street and The Blacksmiths at the top of the high street. What better way to finish off a day in Battle than enjoying a good meal, a light summer wine, al fresco dining in one of the gardens of the restaurants in Battle. Enjoy your visit.

Art sold at London prices, with local saleroom commission rates At Burstow & Hewett of Battle
Burstow and Hewett are a small family firm of Auctioneers with a national reputation for selling art, which is still a very buoyant market, despite the present economic climate. A fantastic illustrated website reaches a huge number of eager buyers, so that it's possible to achieve London art prices in a local saleroom at lower commission rates. Around 400 lots of paintings are offered every month, ranging from £50 up to a few thousand pounds, so something for every pocket. Recently the Battle Auction rooms offered for sale a Scottish oil painting by Edward Hornel which was estimated at £15000 - 20000 and sold for £17000 to an American buyer. The following week 4 paintings by Hornel were offered at a specialist Scottish art auction in Scotland, estimated at the same level and all failed to sell, showing that the art market is as strong in Battle as anywhere else in the country, if not stronger. For free advise on selling art or antiques please call Mark Ellin on 01424 772374.

The Festival of Roses New rose varieties are always a highlight of the Festival of Roses at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and this year is no exception. Making its public debut will be 'Lucky!' Rose of the Year 2009. 'Easy to grow', 'low care', 'amazing disease resistance' are some of the superlatives being used to describe this lovely rose. Breeder Gareth Fryer of Fryers Roses says, 'This is a cracking new floribunda that is seriously exciting and quite different from anything previously seen'. The pretty lilac-pink blooms are scented and borne in abundance on huge wave-like clusters. With strong growth and lavishly covered with clean foliage this rose makes a bold statement when used for specimen planting and is equally impressive for mass bedding and for use amongst mixed borders. This rose will be available bare root from rose nurseries countrywide in late autumn 2008. Other new cultivars on show for the first time include: 'The Wainwright Rose', a formidable new Hybrid Tea with long elegantly formed buds that slowly unfurl to form large and flawless high centred blooms of fresh pale lemon. The blooms are carried on strong, stiff stems in the traditional classic HT style, not just singly, but several together too. Growth is robust and vigorous ensuring a plentiful supply of scented flowers throughout the season on an imposing bush with tough leathery foliage and very good resistance to diseases. The Wainwright Rose is named after Alfred Wainwright, best known for his famous hand written, hand-drawn pictorial guides to the Lakeland Fells. The Wainwright Shelter will be promoting the rose to raise funds for the Animal Shelter that Alfred Wainwright generously helped establish. The rose is bred and introduced by Fryers Roses. Name: T.B.A. (breeder's registered name Harprime) Bred and introduced by Harkness Roses, of Hitchin, Hertfordshire and selected by The Eden Project for its outstanding qualities of robustness and easy-maintenance, as well as for its beauty and general effectiveness as a garden plant. 'Harprime' is a Garden Shrub Rose that bears plentiful, lightly scented blooms in the loosely-cupped cottage-garden style, echoing the charm of the old fashioned roses. The colour is apricot blush, and repeat bloom is abundant and reliable. Habit is vigorous, producing an erect and well-branched shrub as much as 4ft tall by 3ft wide, making it a stunning choice to plant among mixed flower borders, or for group planting where extra height is needed. It will initially be available by mail order via the Cornish Oasis, Eden Project's on-line store and from the Cornish Rose Company. 'Isn't She Lovely', introduced by C & K Jones of Tarvin, Cheshire. A strong growing plant with excellent disease-resistance and a pleasant fragrance, the appropriately named 'Isn't She Lovely', is a classic HT with superb lasting quality. The pointed buds are creamy gold with a slight pink edge that open to ivory with a centre showing deep tones of pink and gold. Foliage is dense, medium size, dark green and semiglossy. The rose is bred by Dickson Nurseries of Northern Ireland. 'Lavender Ice', introduced by Pococks Roses of Romsey, Hampshire. With remarkable weather resistance and compact growth, 'Lavender Ice' is a versatile large flowered floribunda rose, suitable for border or container planting. The full lilac blooms are carried in small clusters on strong, short stems offset by dark glossy foliage. Bred by the highly respected Rosen Tantau of Germany.
large patio pot. This rose is bred by Kordes Roses of Germany. 'Strikes' Gold', commemorating Strikes Garden Centre's bi-centenary and introduced by Mattocks Roses. This beautiful floribunda produces an abundance of large lightly fragrant lemon yellow blooms which age to a soft creamy yellow. Blooms are produced throughout the year on a compact bush with healthy glossy green foliage. Strikes' Gold is an excellent choice whether grouped in beds or planted individually in a mixed border. This rose is bred by Kordes Roses of Germany 'Edward's Rose' is Style Roses' first introduction from amateur rose breeder, Edward Smith of Sandiacre, Nottingham. This disease resistant rose produces masses of exquisitely shaped lightly fragranced, deep salmon blooms, suffused in the centre with golden yellow; it flowers profusely with large clusters of bloom from early summer to early winter. The plant has a tidy upright habit with attractive bronzed young foliage, which darkens to a glossy deep green. A royalty from the sales of this rose will benefit The Stroke Association. ‘Seale Pink Diamond’ David and Catherine May have raised the shrub rose ‘Seale Pink Diamond’ to mark the sixty years the May family have been growing roses in Seale. Clusters of sweetly scented, clear pink blooms are carried above exceptionally healthy bronze- tinged foliage on red stems from June to the frosts. Each individual bloom of this fragrant rose is packed with petals, has an attractive green eye and is held in shape by the incurving outer layer of petals. It has a good compact habit and attains a height of approximately 1 metre. As well as performing beautifully in the border it makes a very suitable container rose too. The press launch of these rose varieties takes place at 1.45pm, Monday 7 July in the Festival of Roses Marquee. If you'd like an invitation to this event, for images of these new roses or information about other activities in the Festival of Roses Marquee, please contact Marilyn Stevens. tel: 01243 374523 email: articulatestudio@btconnect.com
'Friends Forever'. Introduced by Mattocks Roses of Woodbridge, Suffolk, this floribunda produces an abundance of fragrant, large, fully double flowers, which are salmon red in bud opening to a glorious pure pink. The healthy, glossy green foliage and compact free flowering habit make this an excellent choice for planting in a mixed border or 92

Lexus Wins Chauffeur Car Of The Year Already a favourite among CEOs in the city, the top of the range Lexus LS 600h L has been awarded chauffeur car of the year, by The Chauffeur magazine in the highly competitive £50,000 to £100,000 category. Judged closely against the German flagship saloons from MercedesBenz, BMW and Audi, Lexus won the top spot in the toughest category for the most popular vehicles chosen by the chauffeuring industry. Key factors behind the judges’ decision included the Lexus hybrid system which allowed for lower emission and competitive fuel economy, build quality, and the reclining and massaging rear seats which can adapt for shiatsu back and shoulder massages with varying intensity. Also contributing to the award was the Lexus Chauffeur programme which offers unique finance packages, designated staff within the Lexus Centre network for sales and service, plus access to the loan of a PCO (Public Carriage Office) licenced Lexus enabling chauffeurs to continue working in the event of their own vehicle being off the road for any reason. Paul Gibson, Editor of The Chauffeur magazine commented: “I am delighted to present this prestigious award to Lexus for its excellent LS 600h L, which easily fought off its rivals in this sector of the competition. The vehicle represents true luxury and gives the chauffeur everything he needs to carry out his job successfully.” Andy Simpson, Lexus Manager for National, Corporate and Remarketing said, “We are delighted to win this award in such a competitive category. This helps to reinforce the significant benefits of Lexus hybrid drive for the business user whether as an individual car or vehicle fleet.” A selection of Lexus cars including the LS 600h L will be on display at Chauffeur Drive 08 which takes place on 20 and 21 April at the Farnborough Five exhibition centre. For more information visit www.drive08.co.uk. 96
The ‘L’ signifies long wheel base over the standard LS 600h saloon and provides extra rear legroom and can also be specified with the rear seat relaxation package. This includes the massage functions mentioned above, independent rear DVD player, fixed centre console with removable table and body temperature sensing climate control.

MOTORING
Porsche continues the evolutionary change of the 911 model series with the announcement of all-wheel-drive versions of the next generation of its iconic sports car. The new 911 Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S will enter the market in both Coupé and Cabriolet guise, and offer a wide range of innovative engine, transmission and drivetrain technologies providing an even higher standard of driving dynamics combined with much lower fuel consumption. In the new generation 911 Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S, the all-wheel drive is now provided via electronically-controlled Porsche Traction Management (PTM), which replaces the former all-wheel drive with its viscous multiple-plate clutch. The superior PTM system was first developed for the 911 Turbo and has been modified for the Carrera models. The transmission delivers an even higher level of driving stability, traction and agility, further enhanced by the mechanical limited slip differential now fitted as standard to the rear axle. The 911 Carrera 4 models share their all-new flat-six engines with Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) with the two-wheel drive Carrera 2 and Carrera 2S. The features and characteristics of the new engines speak for themselves. Depending on the model, the all-wheel-drive 911 Carrera offers up to 8.5 per cent more power, fuel economy improved by up to 12.9 per cent, and 15.4 per cent lower CO2 emissions than the previous generation. Specifically, output of the 3.6-litre power unit is up by 20bhp to 345 bhp (254 kW). At the same time, a Carrera 4 Coupé with PDK transmission, to take just one example, offers fuel consumption of 28.0mpg (10.1 l/100 km) The new generation 911 Carrera 4 and 4S are available for the first time with the new Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), literally Porsche double-clutch gearbox. Offering no less than seven forward gears, the new gearbox combines the driving comfort of a torque converter-equipped automatic transmission with the dynamic manual gearshift functionality of a sequential racing gearbox. PDK also boasts an entirely automatic gearshift function, and replaces the Porsche 98
Tiptronic S automatic transmission previously offered. Through its optimised and adaptive gearshift programmes, PDK further improves the acceleration of the 911 and reduces fuel consumption to an even lower level. As with the two-wheel drive 911 Carrera models, the new generation of the Carrera 4 is evident through the discreet modification of the nose and tail and its use of new lighting technology. All Carrera models feature, as standard, bi-xenon headlights and new LED daytime driving lights. Dynamic Cornering Lights are available as an option. The 911 Carrera 4 models are 44mm, or 1.73”, wider across the rear wheel arches than the two-wheel drive versions. Further definition and character is added courtesy of a new reflective trim that spans the width between the LED rear lights. Inside the 911, the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) centre console with its larger, touch-sensitive screen improves operation of the audio system and optional satellite navigation to an even higher standard. And a further important point is that PCM is now compatible with Bluetooth, USB and iPod requirements. The second generation Porsche 911 Carrera 4 models go on sale in Great Britain and Ireland on October 25. The Carrera 4 Coupe 3.6-litre is priced from £67,430, and the Carrera 4S Coupe 3.8-litre is priced from £74,720. The 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet is priced from £74,720, and the Carrera Cabriolet 4S from £82,010. Fitted to every 911 is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and owners will also be able to explore the potential of their new car on a Porsche Driving Experience course.
