ON THE COVER A very warm welcome to the third Hastings' Seafood and Wine Festival. The festivities burst into life next to the fishing beach in the Old Town, and eateries around town also join in this hugely popular celebration of Hastings’ fabulous fresh seafood and rich fishing heritage. Food lovers have a special weekend ahead! Tuck into mouth watering seafood tasters prepared by top class local restaurants on the festival stalls. Talented chefs demonstrate their skills with local seafood. You will be able to taste and buy award winning local wines. Stretch out and enjoy a glass in the seating area, while you wait for the next tutored wine tasting. You'll find plenty of locally-made preserves and produce to take home too. The cream of the lively local music scene will entertain you, along with pirates, Punch and Judy, and much more. A festival bus will link the site to Hastings railway station, and St Leonards, which is well worth a visit in its own right. If you're from out of town, why not stay for the weekend? Relax and allow yourself time to explore this fascinating town and discover its world-famous heritage and inspiring culture - just don't forget to bring a cool box to take some delicious seafood home! Restaurants in Hastings and the surrounding area are blessed with some of the best chefs currently cooking anywhere, and their restaurants have a great reputation for the quality of their food - especially fish and seafood. This year, these chefs share their culinary skills with festival food lovers. Let your taste buds be inspired as our gallant gourmets prepare flavoursome fish and succulent seafood dishes before your eyes. Top London chef, Tom Aitkens will put in an appearance on Sunday afternoon, and among the local celebrities appearing will be: Nick Hales from St Clements Restaurant and Paul Webbe from the Fish Café. Try to get there early for the Walking the Fish procession which starts at 10am at Breeds Place (opposite the fountain). A colourful and musical parade of fishy effigies, 'Walking the Fish' launches the festival. Rousing accompaniment will be provided by some infectious percussion music.

On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September in the Old Town you will find a feast of food and wine stalls and plentiful produce at The Plaice site. You will be able to try delicious seafood dishes with international influences. See why Hastings is rightly known as a foodies' paradise. Book a place on a tasting session in the Wine Tasting Marquee (tickets required) with either Masters of Wine, Clive Barlow or Richard Bampfield; wine specialist John Radford; or acclaimed local vintner and winemaker Alexander Carr Taylor. You can even discover which local wines go best with local fish and Sussex cheese. For music, entertain your soul at The Sole beach marquee, open to the public from 12noon, entry is free and top local acts will perform. Book early for the popular Jazz Breakfast on Sunday morning (tickets required). The Electric Palace Cinema is holding mouth watering screenings as part of the festival, and the ‘Choral Banquet’ brings together the choirs of Hastings and its French twin town Bethune on Sunday 21 Sept. There has been a fishing fleet at Hastings for over a thousand years, and many of the methods used remain unchanged to this day. You will be able to watch the local fishermen making nets, splicing ropes and showing the knots they use to help them bring sustainable fish to your plate. Hastings fishery is certified to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard for being eco-friendly and sustainable. You will be welcomed by fresh fish displays at the famous fish shops on Rock-a-Nore Road. Over the weekend you will be entertained by lively strolling musicians and street performers. Most of all you will enjoy the buzzing atmosphere and collection of seafood and wines that is amassed only once a year in Hastings. We have been every year since its inception, even rearranging holiday dates to ensure that we make this weekend. You will have a tremendous time and will look forward to coming back next year. Bon appétit! For festival information, tickets and enquiries you can call 0845 274 1001. hic@hastings.gov.uk www.visit1066country.com. HASTINGS SEAFOOD & WINE FESTIVAL Hastings Old Town. PROPERTY You’ve worked hard, saved; now it’s time to reward yourselves and enjoy the fruits of your labour. You want somewhere that’s a good investment but will meet all your needs now and in the future. Well, let me introduce to you, The Santa Pola Life Resort. Right in the heart of the Costa Blanca, just a ten minute drive from Alicante airport, under the bluest sky imaginable. With an average daily temperature of 20˚c and over 300 glorious days of sunshine a year, it really is ideal for making the most of your time. Santa Pola Life Resort is set on a wonderful 85,000m² plot. It offers a selection of single storey houses and apartments; each generously spaced and beautifully designed to reflect a Mediterranean village. It has an impressive social and leisure centre with a selection of restaurants and cafes, a club house, library, theatre, cinema, meeting rooms, party rooms, private bar, business centre, spa and fitness centre, golf courses and a beautiful outdoor tropical pool with hydrotherapy jets. That’s not all though, you can learn a new skill, maybe a language or a craft from the adult education programme. Or maybe you’d rather just enjoy the sunshine on your terrace or the stunning 8km of sandy beach just 500m away, which the shuttle bus will take you to. Literally everything has been taken into consideration here, if it will make your life easier or your day more enjoyable, it has been done! If leaving the British medical system for a foreign one has been worrying you, then worry not. Santa Pola Life Resort has an extensive on site medical facility, including GP clinic, minor surgery unit, physiotherapy, psychological office and panic alarms in all properties. If you are recovering from a recent operation, you can have your after care treatment transferred to the onsite medical staff and they will take care of your recuperation in your own property. There is also a private healthcare scheme which for a monthly fee will give you the peace of mind you had back in Britain. The Santa Pola Life resort is brought to you by one of the leading Spanish banks; they have many years of experience building homes along the Spanish Costas. 6

unique in that the residents must be over 55, there must always be one resident in each party that is 55 years old or over. This doesn’t mean that younger members of the family will not be welcome. They can stay and use the onsite facilities whenever they like as long as they are accompanied by somebody over 55. This rule is in place to make the atmosphere calm and keep a socially harmonious environment for all residents. The entire site has 24 hour security, including intercom systems in each property linked to reception in order to announce the arrival of guests and visitors. Although, guests and visitors might be the last thing you want, as Santa Pola Life Resort is definitely a secret worth keeping. This fine detached Edwardian home was re-named after it was occupied by the late Stafford Kripps, chancellor of the exchequer just after the war. It is possible that during the war he lived there for a period while he was Minister of Aircraft Production. Vickers, later to become British Aerospace, was located a short distance away in Weybridge where much of the work of Barnes Wallace, the famous inventor took place. He also lives locally. Edwardian properties of this type rarely become available in the Cobham area which has been mostly developed since the 1950’s and although there are many large mansions there are few properties with charm and character like Stafford House. The spacious accommodation is laid out on three floors and there is ample scope to create an annex, office or additional accommodation, should it be required. The property is located in a private cul-de-sac within easy reach of Cobham station with its mainline service to Waterloo. Cobham is located just off junction 10 of the M25 and has easy access to London via the A3. It is equidistant between Gatwick and Heathrow Airports. Stafford House has a price guide of £1.75 Million and can be viewed by agents John D Wood & Co. on 01932-864252.

PROPERTY A great opportunity to both live and work in the delightful historic village of Alfriston without listed building constraints! The Coach House offers flexibility for both of these functions as it has one elevation onto the High Street and the other onto the picture postcard village green, known as ‘The Tye’ with the South Downs as a backdrop and in the heart of the conservation area that may yet be in a new National Park. Opposite the Tye is the village church of St. Andrews, the River Cuckmere and Old Clergy House. The Coach House thus nestles in the most picturesque setting in the village. It has performed many varied uses from Granary and beer barrel store to Florist, Furniture retailer and Clothier, as a B&B taken in Gerard Depardieu and Carole Bouquet doyennes of the stage then on a Glyndebourne romp. In past years even Father Christmas has visited the cavern like lower ground floor to treat Dickensian Night’s little visitors. The house has a sporting history, originally built in 1843 as a coach house and stabling for the Wingrove House Racing Yard, with accommodation above, and then known as ‘The Tye Barn’. It is now run as a successful national business with comfortable living accommodation off road parking and garaging. Down to the basics! The house is arranged on three floors with bright commercial space on the ground floor (due to slope the middle floor) laid with courtyard and interior in old brick paviors and rich Burmese teak decking, it has impressive height and volume that was necessary for equine sizes but now more associated with galleries and workshops. Off the separate residential entrance is a study and WC which was once a 4th bedroom and a hall with timber baluster staircase leading to the first floor country contemporary kitchen fitted with glazed lava stone worktops, adjacent sitting room, cloakroom and shower room. The 3 main bedrooms, one with Victorian rolltop bath, all have spectacular views over the Tye and Downland beyond as well as peace and quiet. Huge potential presents itself not only in this flexible building but also in the trussed rafter attic floor which allows for easy development to two further ensuite bedrooms.

Ittington Manor, near Battle, East Sussex, a picturesque Grade II house with secondary accommodation, lying in a tranquil location with land together with an extensive range of period outbuildings. Understood to date from the 17th century, with later additions, Ittington Manor is an attractive house which is believed to have been a former Iron Master’s House, and it is thought a house has stood on the site long before the present property. Notable features include a number of impressive fireplaces, polished quarry tile and oak floors, good ceiling heights for a property of its age, exposed timbers and a slate floor in the garden room. Outside, there is an excellent range of period farm buildings including a granary which provides 3 rooms on the ground floor with a one bedroom flat above. Attached to the granary are 2 loose boxes, a feed store and tack room. In addition there is a former milking parlour, a detached barn with storage above, and a further loose box. Bordering the gardens are two paddocks and three spring fed ponds and an area of woodland which provides a wonderful setting for the property.

Tim Page-Ratcliff, Partner at Strutt & Parker’s Lewes office, is handling the sale and commented, “Ittington Manor is a historic house set in a wonderful tranquil rural location, yet is only about 2 miles from Battle’s historic High Street. The combination of a substantial house, together with secondary accommodation and land will undoubtedly attract buyer from not only Sussex but London and further afield. ” To find out more about Ittington Manor or to arrange a viewing call Strutt & Parker on 01273 475411.

St Lucia Signals A Safe Investment By Nick Feeney St Lucia Considered to be one of the most romantic of all destinations in the world, St Lucia is a strikingly beautiful tropical island situated at the heart of the Windward chain in the Eastern Caribbean between St Vincent and Martinique. The island is mountainous and fertile, its spectacular peaks and deep valleys draped in the lush greenery of the rainforest and blooming with tropical splendour. The stunning coastline offers variety from classic stretches of white-sand beaches to the dramatic cliffs and hidden coves, and some of the finest natural harbours in the Caribbean. The iconic towering Pitons are just two of the islands natural wonders; the spectacular twin volcanic peaks rise majestically from the sea, midway down the Caribbean coast. As well as being the perfect place to relax and do nothing, St Lucia offers visitors a colourful kaleidoscope of attractions to entertain them. Experience the adventure of exploring its sultry rainforest and swimming in its tropical waterfalls or take advantage of excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving in the clear turquoise waters surrounding the island which are home to a magnificent array of colourful marine life. Why Invest? The Marquis Estate The Marquis Estate is situated amongst some of the Caribbean’s most attractive landscape on the stunning northeast coast of St Lucia and occupies a breathtaking 500+ acre site in a wide lush, tropical valley that sweeps majestically down to one of the most beautiful beaches in St Lucia, the Marquis Bay, where with pristine white sands meet clear, turquoise waters that are perfect for scuba diving and snorkelling. Originally the site of an 18th century sugar mill and more recently a banana plantation, the estate is resplendent with native fruit trees including mango, papaya, coconut, avocado, breadfruit, star fruit, plum and coffee. Tall flame flowers, orchids, jasmine, bougainvillea, oleander and hibiscus explode with colour and the bright red flamboyant tree attracts tiny iridescent humming birds. With a very delicate and detailed plan, a UK developer and currently the largest developer in the Caribbean, intends to transform the Marquis Estate into the finest 5 star Hotel 7 Spa resort in the Caribbean, bringing together some of the best brands and names from around the world to deliver a truly exceptional resort. Properties Inspired by a vision of luxury and elegance and intelligently designed by highly acclaimed architects to ensure environmental sustainability with uncompromising quality, the Marquis Estate will comprise a distinctive collection of bespoke estate villas afforded by this wonderful setting, luxury apartments and penthouses, at the marina and hotel suites providing exclusivity and sophistication within a setting of natural beauty. Surrounded by lush tropical greenery, the properties will be meticulously designed and built using the very finest natural materials sourced from around the world. The properties will not only look stunning but will be beautifully furnished and equipped with luxuriously appointed bathrooms and a state-of-the-art interactive entertainment system. The gardens will be carefully landscaped to create a resort that embraces its exotic natural environment and is in harmony with nature complementing the islands natural beauty and creating a gem within a gem. Add to this a marina, a PGA Golf Course, Equestrian Centre and Polo ground, a tennis and football academy, it sounds like a leading resort already and with prices from only £95000, affordable too! 14

• St Lucia is an established and increasingly popular holiday destination that is also one of the most accessible- three major airlines from the UK provide a direct service to St Lucia (9 hours), and a direct service is available from the following US airports – New York (5 hours), Miami (3 hours), Charlotte (4 hours), Philadelphia (5 hours) and Atlanta (4.5 hours) • St Lucia has a stable economic and political environment with a high probability of price appreciation over the next ten years. St Lucia has many of the same advantages as Barbados but property prices are currently 60% lower. • The world bank has recently placed St Lucia in the top 30 countries in the world to invest, making St Lucia the only Caricom country to make the top 30, ahead of Barbados & Antigua. • The general crime rate in St Lucia is one of the lowest in the Caribbean, making it a safe haven for tourists and for living. What’s more the island benefits from a stable government and economy, and there are favourable tax concessions for property buyers from overseas: No Rental Income Tax, No Capital Gains Tax, No Inheritance Tax, No Repatriation Tax • The island is still unspoilt and undeveloped, although several new developments have recently been started, the government sees expansion of tourism as a key objective and the growing popularity of the island for holidays mean that there is excellent rental potential for properties. • The real estate sector in St Lucia is booming. St Lucia is still one of the most reasonably priced islands in the Caribbean for property acquisition with process 60% lower than Barbados. Property prices have increased by around 40% per annum for the last two years, and are projected to continue to rise for the next 5 years. • This all points to a fast maturing property market in St Lucia with increasing prices, making an early commitment to a home a sound investment in lifestyle and real estate. Growing Old Gracefully By Roger Paine It is often remarked that as you grow older three things happen to you. Firstly you begin to lose your eyesight, secondly you start to lose your memory and thirdly…but you can’t seem to remember what that is…! One thing is certain, however, the UK population is ageing. According to the Office of National Statistics the population of the UK grew by eight percent in thirty years, from 55.9 million in 1971 to 60.2 million by mid-2005. And whilst it is continuing to grow it is significant that the change has not occurred evenly across all age groups. In an unprecedented demographic shift, the number of young people is dwindling while the older sector of the population rapidly expands. The underlying cause is that we are living longer and having fewer children, whilst the size of the baby-boomer generation, who are just starting to retire, is accelerating the trend. By 2014, projections suggest over-65-year-olds will overtake the under16’s. And by 2025, the number of over-60’s will have passed the under25’s for the first time. Researchers also predict that the baby-boomers will revolutionise what it means to be old because their attitudes are so different to those of their parents. They are likely to be more demanding and imaginative consumers of both products and services, seeking out information for themselves, very often on the internet, and refusing to be defined by their age group. All this has had an effect on the property market. It is not so long ago that most people, as they grew older, were happy to remain in the same property they had always lived in, sometimes since they were born. Right up until the time they either moved to live with relatives or went into a care home. People have come to realize that their life span is now greater than they might have contemplated, and are taking the opportunity to change their life style. This includes moving house. Many companies now cater exclusively for this new generation of

homeowners with several developers specializing in properties for the active and more affluent senior citizens. The last two decades have witnessed an increase in the number of people looking to buy a new home in a retirement development. This is not driven solely by the desire for a better lifestyle but also, in many cases, the wish to spend more time in a second home abroad. In the main these purchasers will be downsizing from large family homes, usually with a substantial garden that requires a great deal of maintenance and has become an increasing burden for the owner. Especially popular are developments which comprise apartments and houses which are both newly built and created from original buildings. At the historic Douces Manor, designed in the 18th century by Thomas Douce in the village of West Malling, there are 24 properties in total, set in landscaped gardens. Another development which has interesting historical connections is Great Maytham Hall, just outside the village of Rolvenden. Listed Grade II* and designed by Sir Edward Lutyens in 1909, it has 15 refurbished one, two or three bedroom apartments which have been created to make the most of the original architectural features and individual character of the house. Estate agents are unanimous in their view that the older generation, sometimes called the bolder generation, increasingly want to move before circumstances dictate. With greater life expectancy and better health care, such important decisions can now be taken before it is too late. But whether you decide to release the equity tied up in your house to purchase an apartment in a purpose built retirement development, perhaps at the same time helping your children with a deposit to get on the property ladder, or prefer a character house with off-road parking and a small garden in a village, where it can be safely locked up whilst you take a long holiday or go to your second home abroad, your aim should be to grow old gracefully.

Denswood House is an outstanding country house, designed 8 years ago by the renowned architect Stephen Langer. Despite its youth, the house is a clever design, combining formal Georgian style grandeur with the more rustic farmhouse style, all with the appearance of a much older house. Approached by a delightful tree lined driveway with paddocks either side, sweeping past the house to a parking area. There is a useful 3 bay garage with a workshop to one side and a room above. The grounds of approximately 65.12 acres are made up of woodland, paddocks, three ponds, swimming pool with a covered decked sitting area and immaculate croquet lawn. There is also Planning Permission for a tennis court and gym complex. The formal reception rooms which are spread over three floors are light and well proportioned with features such as oak flooring, large open fireplaces, bay windows and delightful views over the surrounding gardens and beyond, especially from the drawing from where there is a bluebell carpeted ride in the Spring. The house is ideal for entertaining with spacious drawing room, sitting room, dining room and especially with the large kitchen/breakfast room which runs the width of the house and a separate games room. A bay window to one end of the kitchen provides unspoilt far reaching views and French windows open onto an entertaining terrace from which you can enjoy the unrivalled setting and the privacy that comes along with it. The flexible accommodation provides ample bedroom and bathroom facilities for both the family and guests including a superb master bedroom suite with two dressing rooms, large en suite bathroom and incredible far reaching views. The house is within easy reach of the nearby village of Robertsbridge with local shops and mainline station (London Bridge in approximately 1hr 15 minutes). EDUCATION

Positive approach to education at Vinehall School Open morning 27th September At Vinehall School in Robertsbridge, staff work hard to ensure that the children are as happy as possible. Pupils are encouraged to develop a sense of self, to contribute to their community and also the wider world. Children will experience a broad range of subjects and activities and will come to know what they enjoy and what they are good at, while at the same time as appreciating the strengths of others. They celebrate all kinds of success and children can reach outstandingly high standards in music, drama, art, sports and academic areas. At the same time, the ethos at Vinehall is inclusive. All children are expected to play in matches for the school, participate in plays and almost all learn at least one instrument. They hope that all children will pursue an area of special interest at school. As the children move through Vinehall, they become more independent in preparation for their next school. Vinehall is especially good at helping the children to organise their own learning. There is an easy and open relationship between staff and children and a real sense of community. The children are happy, confident, co-operative and enthusiastic about life. Vinehall has an outstanding academic record and send children to a large number of senior schools, including the best public schools in the county. Special features of the school include its purpose built Pre-Prep and theatre, the wonderful library/teaching areas, the magnificent resources for sports and the range and quality of instrumental tuition. English Speaking Board examinations and a huge number of concerts, plays and performance opportunities mark the school out. This month the KICKZ Danceworks start, for boys and girls aged from 2 and a half years upwards. For more information you can call Sarah on 01580 881464. At Vinehall The atmosphere is busy and the school's termly calendar is packed with events to encourage participation. Marsh’l Art By Cindy-Lou Dale Romney Marsh is a land of strange beauty: the unspoilt Kent countryside rolls down from wooded hills to the shingled beach desolation of the UK’s only desert. This is a land steeped in extraordinary legend that always needed to defend itself against the elements and foreign invaders. Little wonder that the rugged vistas, effervescent ocean and luminous sky inspire and greatly influence painters, ceramics artists, potters and sculptors. Like Julie Taylor, whose surroundings dominate the theme running continuously through all her ceramic work. As are Sue Randle’s dramatic expressionist oils which evidence a vanishing industry of steam locomotives and disused farm machinery. Then there are Dawn Kempen’s haunting water colours which impart the gentlest of expressionist art, capturing the elusive light as it washes over the landscape. In an area of some 100 square miles, Romney Marsh can claim as its own four historical ruins, sixteen scheduled ancient monuments, ninetyseven recorded archaeological sites, eight areas of special scientific interest, one national and one local Nature Reserve, and fourteen ancient churches. Across from one such ancient church in Lydd, is Andy Holyer’s Georgian home and studio. I picked my way around a large easel propped up between a couple of sagging chairs, overstuffed bookcases, and a few dozen large canvases haphazardly stacked against the walls – there being no further wall hanging space. I enquired after the source of his inspiration. “Look at where I live. Just beyond my bedroom window is a handsome church tower that has been standing there, adding a little touch of nobility and grandeur to the

26

landscape for more than a thousand years. And here it’s just an anonymous country church, treasured by a few aging parishioners,” smiled Holyer, a wild-haired, amiable fellow. I turned my attention to his art. “When I first started out in the art world everything needed a political statement and every painting needed to be loaded with meaning. My commissions were demanding and required the embodiment of numerous intellectual analytical options - depths into which one could not descend without a diving bell. My aim was to be understood by everyone.” Holyer’s earlier paintings have a disquieting feel of strangeness about them and embody a darkness that leaves one with the distinct impression of demons tormenting the disturbed soul of a deeply disillusioned man. “Then life happened and all my solid plans for the future dissolved, along with all its stabilities. I moved back to my childhood neighbourhood, midlife crisis in tow, and eventually started painting again – however, this time I painted for myself; a kind of therapy one might say.” He gestured towards the window. “My environment subconsciously seeped into my work, along with the local history and legends of Romney Marsh. Then people started viewing my work, seeing the dark humour – and they liked it!”

Holyer had found a new language to paint in, a new audience and now, armed with this new freedom, rejects the scholarly interpretations and metaphysical depth that people demand art be crammed with. Studying one of Holyer’s more recent works I came to realise that each wild brush stroke was a line of colourful poetry. His use of colour is almost lyrical. His stroke senses the feel of colour and he reveals this through its use; he does not see colours in isolation, he captures the mood of blue sorrow, of red screams, violet melancholy, and yellow decay. “I use robust, daring colours to find a rapport between people, nature, culture and the divine.” When analysing his surreal figures and expressionist dream-like landscapes, it’s evident that great painters, such as Grosz, Beckman, Van Gogh and Munch, have influenced his work. He borders on the abstract, almost deconstructing the actual image, yet drawing out the inner personality and circumstance of the subject. He manipulates canvas space and the placement of objects in settings, which is crucial to the mood and personality of the piece. Holyer looks at the world differently to other artist: His unique take on the world sees only its essence and consequently, he paints only that. Together with his macabre imagination, brushwork and use of brilliant colours he brings to the fore the structure and energy of his art. The lines flow freely into one another suggesting that nothing really stands alone, nor does anything seem too sturdy.

But it’s his lucidity and unpretentiousness that’s interesting - a refreshingly sane voice. “Every aspect of the painting process”, Holyer confides, “is accompanied by an ongoing dialogue with the not-yet-formed, the outcome is never certain.” Most often a finished piece contains a subject that is highly simplified. He deliberately distorts and stretches the proportions he creates to near fish-eye angles, which gives the figures the appearance of movement. Even the oils he uses are combined in unusual ways, inviting the unpredictable nature of creativity, movement and contrast. Whilst studying one of Holyer’s landscapes or figure-based oils, you’ll find it draws on your emotions and psychologically rearranges your thought process. Historical agonies, uncertain legends, the stark environment - he uses his surroundings as a point of departure - and always the secreted away humour. If paintings are windows, Holyer’s looking glass looks into a world where the line between fantasy and reality is blurred; where the unsettled past rubs shoulders with the now. Through his window, stories come to life, tales that can only be told in the potent and mysterious language of art.

For years, well-known fairs organiser Caroline Penman has sought to broaden the appeal of antiques by encouraging collectors and interior designers to explore new ways of combining traditional period furniture and fine art with the best of contemporary art and design. Now Caroline is giving exhibitors the opportunity to “mix and match” by making space available to combine a wide range of exhibits in specially designed room-sets displays. These will offer visitors an opportunity to enhance their appreciation of both modern and period design. Visitors will discover an avenue of modern art galleries and mid-20th century specialist dealers with fashionable ‘30s to ‘70s modernist furniture, Danish coloured glass and American Lucite lamps. On the other side of the ballroom will be a selection of traditional antique dealers. Between these two avenues two large square rooms, one a living room, the other a dining room will feature exhibits from all exhibitors, spaciously laid out, with inspiring interior décor. Everything can be purchased and taken away immediately, so there will be a constantly changing display. All exhibits will be strictly vetted for quality and authenticity, providing visitors with all the reassurance they need before making important purchases. Collectors from across the south of England will be attending this important event, which will be held in the luxury ballroom at the golf club and hotel complex. The East Sussex National Golf Resort stands in a delightful and picturesque setting on the edge of the South Downs at Little Horsted, near Uckfield, East Sussex. The fair is less than half-anhour by car from Brighton, Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells. Visitors can also enjoy excellent lunches and afternoon teas in the hotel restaurant and, of course, two 18-hole golf courses. Among the specialist exhibitors will be Artropolis from Suffolk with contemporary paintings and sculpture by Wilf Roberts, well known for

his Welsh landscapes; Kay Boyce, whose artistic and sensual studies of the female form are extremely popular, and Kate Bailey, who has exhibited her figurative studies in charcoal and pastels all over the world. >From London, The Russell Gallery will be showing mainly figurative work by artists such as Mary Fedden OBE RA, Christopher Hall RBA, Alfred Daniels RBA ROI, Jason Bowyer NEAC, PS, RP, Sue Campion, Richard Pikesley NEAC, Susan Bower RBA RI, Sarah Spencer NEAC and many younger artists, including Susan Hocking, Angela Findlay, Tom Clifford and Julian Bailey. Local Sussex gallery The South Pacific Art Company will be showing range of evocative modern paintings, glass and sculpture from and inspired by the Pacific Rim, including works by Katie Brown, Denita Tizard, Sue Cooke, Carmen Simmonds and others. Among the traditional period furniture specialists will be local Sussex dealers M & J Duncan Antiques, Walton Interiors and Alistair Tapsell from Brighton, who also offers a range of decorative Oriental furniture and artifacts. For personal décor, collectors of vintage designer costume jewellery will have plenty to enjoy on the stand of Monica, a jewellery specialist from London. Also on sale will be a fine selection of 19th and early 20th century jewellery from specialist dealers Terry Robert from Norfolk. The fair is organised by locally based Caroline Penman of Penman Fairs, Uckfield, the company who also organise The Annual Chelsea Art Fair, The Petersfield Antiques Fair and other events across the country. Says Caroline Penman ‘With it’s spacious facilities, restaurant, bar lounge and plenty of car parking, The East Sussex Golf Resort is the ideal venue for our prestigious fair and perfect for buyers who want to make the most of their visit.’ The fair is open to the public from 10.30am to 6pm on Friday and Saturday and from 10.30am to 5pm on Sunday. Admission is £3.00, including readmission, catalogue and car parking.

Things you need to know when purchasing a camera By Ian Isted Choosing the right digital camera is not the easiest of things. There are several different aspects of a digital camera that will affect its performance and your consumer comfort. - Battery - Storage Space - Size & Shape - Megapixels So, what about the battery? This is an important thing to consider when buying a digital camera. Cameras come with a variety of different battery types. Lithium Ion and Alkaline batteries such as the ever popular AA’s, are the most common amongst Digital Cameras. When choosing a camera, selecting a model that relies on conventional Alkaline (disposable) batteries would be a mistake as these tend to drain very quickly and must then be replaced. A Lithium Ion (rechargeable) battery would be a much better choice as these last a long time and can usually be swapped and charged very easily. Storage Space, the bigger the better! The memory space of a model is another one of those specifications that people quite often don’t pay very much attention to. This can be a problem as not paying attention to this will more than likely result in you having to return to the shop to purchase a memory card at a later date, this is an inconvenience you can do without!

30

Check to see that the camera has enough “internal” memory. 1GB (Gigabyte) is adequate, but if the model you would like to purchase has less than this you may wish to consider a memory card, these can come in many different sizes and will add to the memory available to store photographs on. More memory equals more photographs. You should be aware that some cameras do not have a facility for memory cards. Size and Shape, what is right for you? Cameras come in a selection of different sizes and shapes, from extremely thin rectangles, to wedges, and of course my personal favourite cameras with external lenses. Selecting the right shape or size is something that is not as easy as you might at first expect. Larger cameras often offer better features and lenses but are not a convenient shape to be carried in a handbag or pocket. If you would like something you can take with you everywhere for those times that we all say “I wish I had my camera with me” then a small camera would be the ideal choice. Megapixels, the more the better? Megapixels is a great buzzword that has appeared amongst photographers and camera manufacturers. It’s a great way of appealing to the everyday customer, people tend not to want their old 42” television anymore because of the latest 44”, and are willing to pay an extra £500 for it. What’s the big difference? Digital Cameras have now developed ton such excellent resolutions that when wanting to print a simple photo glossy print there is no visible difference to the naked eye between a 5 megapixel photo or an 13 megapixel photo.

Over 2000 visitors recently flocked to the Spa Valley Railway in Tunbridge Wells at the weekend, where they were able to meet Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends from the famous books and television series. Whilst Thomas set about entertaining his fans by re-enacting stories and playing games in the yard, his friends took it in turns to take the passengers on a return trip to Groombridge, on board children were entertained by balloon sculptors. Once back in Tunbridge Wells visitors were able meet other characters including Duck, Diesel, Mavis, George and Percy. There were plenty of other attractions to keep visitors entertained including Punch and Judy shows, face painting, traditional children’s games and a miniature railway. Sir Topham Hatt, The Fat Controller was on hand to ensure all the engines worked hard and that visiting children had a day to remember. For the first time the Fat Controller held a tea party on the last train of the day. As Thomas the Tank Engine pulled the train, the children enjoyed jam sandwiches whilst meeting the Fat Controller and being entertained by the balloon sculptors. The next Thomas days are in October 4th, 5th, 11th & 12th. Space on the trains is strictly limited so advanced booking is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment, information regarding forth coming dates, or for ticket bookings you can visit Tunbridge Wells West station or call them on 01892 537715.

Your holiday home in Eastbourne, Brighton, Le Havre, St Valery en Caux or wherever takes your fancy.

Following recent headlines, "Deadly Stingray found in West Sussex" and " Killer Stingray found off British coast" Sussex Power Boats announced that several more Stingrays can be found in Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne. These are not at all dangerous but do offer "deadly" performance at "killer" prices. Stop by Sussex Power Boats, at 3, The Boatshed or on the sales pontoon at Sovereign Harbour, today and see a selection of the NEW 2008 Stingrays! The flagship offering is the new Stingray 250CS mid cabin cruiser for 2008! Get the best of both worlds with the boat that thinks it's an RV and the RV that‌ well it is a boat. The overall dimensions of the dual-cabin 250CS, makes it Stingray's largest, most accommodating boat in the fleet. The 250CS is more than able to take you over to France for the weekend or even a night out for a meal in a French restaurant or a drink in the marina in Brighton. Yet it is not so large that it's landlocked. With an appropriate tow vehicle the 25-foot cruiser can be trailered to endless enjoyable destinations that beckon a visit. The 250CS offers sleeping accommodations for four with two berths, one in the forward bow and another amidships, making it ideal for overnight excursions. Access to the mid-cabin is a breeze thanks to an expanded entryway and sloped overhead. Interior lighting and an opening port provide ample light and cabin ventilation for added comfort. Preparing meals is made easy with a well thought-out and fully equipped galley. It features multiple storage nooks, bottle holders and attractive cabinets along with a solid surface countertop incorporating a sink, surface top stove, overhead microwave, under-counter refrigerator and rubbish bin. A convertible dinette table with sit-around lounges provides a cosy atmosphere for family-style dining. When it's time to sleep, simply drop the table and insert the V-berth filler cushions. Beneath the berth is an abundance of built-in storage. 34

Overhead is a translucent hatch and adjustable lighting. A private hanging locker offers the convenience of keeping clothing presentable and readily accessible. Adjacent to the galley you have the welcome convenience of a fully enclosed stand-up fibreglass head with mirrored vanity, overhead lighting, generous storage, sink, manual-flush toilet and shower. The 250CS is equally accommodating topside. A cockpit refreshment centre features a smooth top counter with covered sink and faucet, a stainless steel rack to accommodate up to three oversized drinks, builtin fire extinguisher mount and under counter trash bin and storage compartment. The aft section of the counter top incorporates an integrated grab handle for added in-cockpit security. It also features a dedicated receptacle for the removable cooler so it doesn't become a cockpit obstacle. For added convenience a covered, built-in cooler with an overboard drain is incorporated between the portside seats. The Stingray design engineers came up with a fresh approach to cockpit seating by implementing an aft facing "rumble" seat astern of a doublewide passenger seat. Aft is a three-quarter, rear bench that expands to form a sunning pad when filler cushions are put in place. For the driver there's a sturdy, custom-designed, flip-up bolster. A stylish, two-tier helm with full instrumentation allows you to monitor all gauges at a glance and places accessory switches and controls at your fingertips. A Ritchie compass sits atop the helm for easy directional reading. A deluxe, stainless steel tilt steering wheel adjusts for sitting or standing to complement the flip-up bolster, and integrated footrests provide added driver comfort. No Reservations About Teepees By Tina Brown We’re passionate about TPs and want to provide the South East with the best service, with the greatest comfort and luxury, says Tina....of TPs We are a sociable family who love to have people over for parties and barbeques. However with the typical British weather being what it is, we often had to change dates or cancel altogether. Even on the occasions when it’s sunny, we’ve found the party has ended early on account of the evenings getting cold quickly – even in the height of the summer. So we started to look into how we could keep warm outside and although we have patio heaters, braziers or firepits, everyone has to huddle around them to feel the benefit. Teepees ticked all the right boxes – you can sit inside them with loads of space and be warm and comfortable without losing the outdoor feel. Since we bought one we have always been pleased with the versatility of it – It was perfect for our parties, perfect for out children’s sleepovers, perfect for my sons 7th birthday and perfect for our Halloween party The whole family and some friends slept comfortably and we were warm and cosy all night long. When we received our first Teepee it took four of us all day to work out how to erect it but eventually after many arguments it was up and looked fantastic. So we relaxed in it at the end of the day with a couple of glasses of wine, then as the evening drew on and started to cool we dragged in a chimnea and in no time at all, we were all warm and relaxed. None of us wanted to leave that night and the feeling has never changed every time we use it (although nowadays it goes up much quicker – around 1½ hours and there are no arguments!). Another great thing we’ve found is that they are very aesthetically pleasing – seeming to fit comfortably in with their surroundings rather than at odds with them. Eventually we decided it was time to share our discovery, so we decided to hire them out to people and since we started, we have been

38

constantly pleased by our customer’s enjoyment of them, and the wide variety of occasions they have been used for. The Teepees are of the highest quality and maintained to a high standard and the TPs team will deliver, erect and setup your Teepee in your requested location. And when your event has finished, will dismantle the Teepee, doing all the work for you. You can make the most of the rest of the summer with a teepee. To find out more call 01797 253829.

The Royal Hippodrome Theatre, Eastbourne By Roger Paine The Royal Hippodrome Theatre in Eastbourne’s once-fashionable Seaside Road, which runs eastwards from the town centre parallel with Marine Parade, is the town’s hidden theatrical gem. Still going as strongly as when first opened 125 years ago on 2nd August 1883, the theatre owes its existence to the town’s ‘Season Extension Committee’. This comprised some 60 local tradesmen, hoteliers and shopkeepers who had campaigned for a larger number of visitors to be attracted to Eastbourne’s then limited summer season. They also had the vision to appoint one of the greatest theatre architects of the day, Mr C J Phipps. After a period of negotiation, Mr Phipps purchased the freehold of the Seaside site from the Duke of Devonshire and demolished an existing villa with its own grounds, Aberdeen House. As building work progressed it was announced that the new theatre had been granted a Royal Warrant by the Prince of Wales and would be known as the New Eastbourne Theatre Royal and Opera House. The building has a formal, solid appearance, unlike many of the more decorated and imposing theatres built later. The frontage was designed to accommodate a number of shops which provided additional income. The interior with its red plush, gilt facades, crystal chandelier, spacious boxes, large orchestra pit and magnificent proscenium arch was modelled on another Phipps’ theatre, the Savoy in London, home to Richard D’Oyly Carte’s new Savoy Opera Company, famous for producing Gilbert & Sullivan’s much-loved operas. The new theatre had capacity for 1,200 people. Of these, 500 were on benches or standing in the ground floor pit, where they were known as pittites, with a further 250 shoe-horned into the gallery at the rear of the upper tier. This was set back so that the galleryites, as they were known, were unable to enjoy themselves in the traditional manner by throwing their apple cores or toffee wrappers onto the ‘nobs’ below! The audience, divided as it was by class and ability to pay for entertainment, had their own separate entrances. The opening performance at the new theatre was by J L Toole and his London company, followed by Augustus Harris with his full company from Britain’s premier theatre, the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

The theatre continued in this manner until May 1897 when, following Mr Phipps’ sudden death, proprietorship passed to Mr Greber who undertook the first total refurbishment. It was not until December 1904, however, that the theatre became known as the Eastbourne Hippodrome and began producing twice nightly variety shows to an increased audience capacity of 1,500. For the next ten years in the halcyon days of British music hall, the Royal prefix was re-instated in 1908, and with refreshment bars on all three levels, the theatre regularly operated at near capacity, and welcomed many stars of the Edwardian era including Harry Houdini, Marie Lloyd, Harry Tate and a young comedian, Robb Wilton. Throughout the 20’s and 30’s it adapted to changing times by mixing variety with straight plays and even early motion pictures, which suited the theatre’s comfortable and intimate surroundings. The effect of radio also began to be felt with stars of this new form of entertainment, such as Vic Oliver, Cyril Fletcher and Elsie and Doris Waters appearing at the Royal Hippodrome. After World War II the theatre continued to flourish and featured, amongst many others, Peter Sellers (billed as ‘Creator of Crystal Jollybottom’), Max Miller, Sandy Powell, Tommy Trinder, Jimmy Jewel, Harry Secombe, Vera Lynn, Ken Dodd, and Johnny Dankworth. Bruce Forsyth was starring at the theatre when summoned to appear as compere for television’s popular Sunday Night at the London Palladium. The Royal Hippodrome justly boasts a roll-call of theatrical history and continues to stage the longest running summer show in Britain. Now owned by Eastbourne Borough Council but run by a separate production company, Matthews Productions, and with a capacity of 640, it is currently presenting, until October 2008, a new production “Those Variety Days” starring Syd Little, of the fondly remembered comedy duo ‘Little and Large’. Never was the expression ‘plus ça change…’ - the more that changes the more it is the same - more appropriate.

Chapel Down Restaurant By Cindy-Lou Dale Gourmet dining has, for some seasoned diners, become somewhat over rated. One connoisseur-like meal tastes no different to another; it’s become something of a ‘sameness’, bland even, only hinting at a promise of flavour - one which can never quite be placed. It was with this glum mindset that I drove towards Tenterden where celebrity TV chef, Richard Phillips, recently opened a boutique restaurant located in the rustic Chapel Down vineyard, home to some of England’s award winning wines. The window dressing was elegant: The first floor bar overlooks the vineyard, aged wine barrels had been deconstructed and its planks shaped into dramatic woven wall art; a copper and blonde wood bar counter, a few small black tables surrounded by bespoke high-back chairs upholstered in tweed blazers. In the restaurant moss green walls offset chrome and glass chandeliers; a unique wine collection was secured behind a glass fronted temperature controlled cabinet and a chrome ‘bonbon tree’ hinted at delights reserved for later. A waiter, swathed in black, presented me with a champagne coloured ‘Garden of England’ cocktail; rose petals floated in the tall frosted glass. My despondent dining thoughts of earlier were sufficiently dispelled when I savoured my first forkful of sensually flavoured crab and fennel risotto, with succulent pan fried scallops, all beautifully offset by a glass of crisp and light Chapel Down Bacchus Reserve 2006. Equally I found it difficult to hold back my startled delight when sampling the honey and port glazed roast duck breast, with spiced duck sauce, and creamed Tenterden mashed potatoes, accompanied by a beautifully balanced off-dry English Rosé 2007.

A glass of Chapel Down Nectar was presented with desert - treacle tart and lime clotted cream. My first spoonful roused a series of involuntary rapturous sounds of intensity sufficient to summon stares from across the room, but I could not bring myself to care. It’s seldom one comes away from a restaurant completely satisfied; having your expectations surpassed in every sense of the word is almost unheard of, yet this is what Chapel Down restaurant manages to do from the moment you arrive – all for under £25 per head. ‘Very early in my career I learnt that listening to what your customers want is imperative,’ announced Chef Richard Phillips (36), relaxing with a glass of something chilled. ‘If I took fillet steak off the menu they’d be picketing outside. The trick is to work with what you have and add to it; creating culinary delights with herbs and creams and wines – sourcing produce locally.’ For reservations you can call 01580 761616.

Poussin 4 poussins (about 450g each) 1 medium orange, quartered Fresh thyme Olive oil 300ml hot chicken stock Spiced Berry Sauce 20g butter 2 shallots, finely chopped 150ml red wine 4 tbsp Bottlegreen Spiced Berry Cordial 150g blackberries 1 tsp corn flour

method... Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/mark 6. Rinse the poussin, and dry on kitchen paper. Season inside the cavity of each poussin and then place a portion of orange and three sprigs of thyme onto each. Place poussin in a roasting tin, brush the birds with oil, and then pour in the hot chicken stock. Cover with foil and bake in the oven for 50 minutes. Remove the foil and roast for an additional 15-20 minutes until the poussin are golden. Meanwhile, start to make the sauce. Heat the butter in a medium pan, add the shallots and cook gently until softened. Pour in the wine, bring to boil and continue to boil until reduced to about 4 tablespoons. Take the pan off the heat. Lift the poussin from the roasting tin and keep warm in the oven. Pour the juices into a separating jug. Once settled, pour the juices through a sieve into the saucepan, leaving behind the fat. Bring the sauce back to the boil and simmer 3-4 minutes to reduce by about one-third. Stir in the Spiced Berry Cordial and the blackberries. Blend in the corn flour with a tablespoon of water, stir into the sauce, and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Season if needed. Place a poussin on each serving plate and spoon the berry sauce around. Ready to serve.

No Ugly Duckling James McNeil visits The Swan at Dallington We once called in at The Swan on a vicious wet windy Friday evening in Spring, having heard that the new owners had injected a new lease of life to this ancient country pub. The car park tells its own tale- a gleaming 08 Range Rover sat quietly by its older stablemate, a 1970s Land Rover Defender. Even older is the building itself. 1399 is the date. Inside the senses are hit by the flavour of the place. Wet wax jackets, dogs, expensive cologne mingled with the scent of smoke from the roaring fireplace. At the bar well heeled commuters mixed with farm workers, tradesmen and a smattering from the horse riding community. Further through we were met with the dining tables and the delicious aroma of good cooking. Needless to say, that evening we were unable to bag a table, the place was heaving. Returning in August we reserved a table to sample the fare on offer. On a cloudy midweek evening we were lucky to get a table: fully booked and the bar packed to the beamed rafters. The eclectic mix of drinkers made for a buzzing atmosphere. The pub itself has changed little in the 30 years since I first visited. It is an original, real, rough and ready country pub. The new owners have wisely held on to the soul of the building, while adding selected touches here and there to embellish the place. A big fireplace, rough wood flooring, inglenooks and bags of character. Through to the rear and in the dining area there is more of the same.

For the wine I went for the house, an excellent Merlot, Renny Pannier. Choose from around 20 wines, mainly European with a smattering from the New World. My main course of Venison medallions in a wonderful stilton sauce with superbly done sautĂŠ potatoes, immaculate. The vegetables were done to perfection. The Lamb Chops in a rosemary gravy sauce were perfect. Soft and tasty, pinkish inside. For my daughter the Mayfield Sausages with mash, onions and gravy got the thumbs up. This, we were told is another favourite with the regulars. The evening came to a grand finale with some historic puddings. The best Banoffi Pie on Gods Earth is made by Sandra White, wife of Brighton FC coach Dean at home in Bexhill on Sea. It must be said that The Swan Banoffi came damn close. The puddings are home made, another recommended favourite is the Sticky Toffee Pudding. We eventually rolled out into the evening happy and relaxed, as was my wallet. For three including drinks, the bill romped in at ÂŁ71. For the atmosphere, surroundings, superb cooking and value for money The Swan is indeed a safe bet. We will certainly be back for more. You should too, but book to be certain of a table.

Old hunting pictures and ancient photos charting the history of Dallington FC display the history of this farming area and the central place The Swan has played in the community over the decades. To the window there are big views south towards Eastbourne and the coast. Below there is a nice beer garden if you get the chance to enjoy an Indian summer. We bagged the best table in the window. Each setting has flowers and candles, and the rough canvas blinds are a nice touch. Service from the girls is informal and friendly. Choose your food from the blackboards, adorned with swathes of interesting choices. Headed up is their statement that wherever possible ingredients are fresh and locally sourced. For starters there are Orkney Herrings, Mussells, Sweet Chilli Pork and more- all around a fiver. For mains a nod to the locality with Pheasant Breast and Panfried Plaice. The locals recommended the curry too, as well as the Cod and Chips. My starter was unusual but delicious-Buffalo with Mozzarella, fried and wrapped in Parma Ham. Absolutely stunning. We also had Avocado and Prawns- fresh and very refreshing. With both starters the salads and dressings were spot on. Presentation was excellent, Modern English style in a traditional old English setting.

THE ASPECT WEDDINGS PAGES Nice Day For A White Wedding Today, despite the pressures of modern life the tradition of ‘tying the knot’ remains as popular as ever. In the UK around 350,000 couples get married every year. That’s an awful lot of wedding cake! For many of this magazine’s engaged couples the choice of wedding will be traditional, with church, choir, bells and maybe even a horse and carriage.

Photograph by Mike Dwyer of Battle

The formal church wedding followed by a reception in suitable country house or similar venue, honeymoon and then back home to a new residence – well! Certainly takes some organising. Successful day requires the patience and organisational skills of an experienced parent – normally mother! Planning the whole event will of course revolve around the day itself – first step is to then contact the church of your choice to book the date. Confirm this by letter and ensure that he knows exactly what is required – bells, choir, organist. The reception is the next main item, and is probably the most important decision to take. Make enquiries now because the most popular venues are booked well in advance. Decisions of style and menu can be taken closer to the day. Cost per head can be the most important consideration and some of the most stylish and up-market hotels can be surprisingly good value – most will tailor their service to your own budget. If there is money to spare, think about memorable weddings you have attended and the mix of ingredients that made them special – stunning floral arrangements perhaps arranged at the entrance and inside a stylish marquee, situated in the picturesque grounds of a refined hotel. It’s the subtle extra touches that make the day. For the bride her dress must be the priority. Then there is the guest list and invitations to be printed and posted. Think about directions to the church and reception. Your guests will also need to know if the affair will be a top hat and tails event. If the reception is anywhere other than a hotel, then contact caterers very soon – once again remember that the best get booked well in advance. Apart from the cost per head and type of food to be served (finger buffet or banquet), don’t forget to check the quality of cutlery, china, table linen and glass. Table decoration and the number of staff available on the day must also be checked.

Suitable evening entertainment, if required, should also be decided and booked in advance. Transport to the church should be booked as soon as possible. Today’s favourites are the Rolls Royce or a pony and trap. To record the day, hire a professional photographer and/or speak to a video company. Leaving the job to well meaning relations or friends could end in tears! The bridegroom traditionally takes a back seat in the arrangements for the big day – but at least don’t forget to buy presents for the bridesmaids. As the big day comes over closer central items such as rings and the wedding cake need to be ordered, flower arrangements and deliveries must be organised – oh yes, what about the honeymoon? Finally, don’t forget the bride – or rather her condition. The months leading up to the big day can be stressful. She must watch her weight, get plenty of sleep, keep relaxed and prepare her appearance – skin care, colouring, shoes, head-dress, everything must be worked on in advance and these days many brides take professional advice before the big day. Enjoy the preparation and the organisation, but remember that a well planned wedding with professional help and guidance means that when the big day comes, it almost runs itself. Most of all, enjoy the day when it comes.

Wedding Photography Decisions By Jon Firth So you’ve had a look at a couple of good photographers, and secured the services of your chosen creative professional, after some thought. You understand what you are buying, and are clued up to the style of images on offer. You are excited about how great you are going look, so make sure you get the best from your Photographer........................ 1) The pre Wedding meet. Go through your timings with your photographer, give them a list of formal photographs required (the more Traditional shots). Listen to how long your list will take. It’s your day, but a photographer should give you an accurate idea of how long these shots will take. You might be surprised how long even a dozen formal shots can take, it often all depends on 2) Ushers They come in three types generally. Smart, helpful and on the ball. They know it’s an honor, but realise they are there to move people around, helping co ordinate with the Church, Hotel etc and Photography - all goes great. Type two are nice but as useful as chocolate fireguards as they couldn’t usher a chicken into a coop, and type three think they are there to drink and act the fool. CHOOSE TYPE ONE

5) Be Realistic! If some of your friends and family prefer the bar or a cigar to having their photograph with you when asked, shame on them. That is not the Photographers fault. People do also blink, and pop out in spots etc. Thankfully in this day and age it can be resolved with the wonders of Photoshop. If though your Photographer has taken three, four or five shots and Aunt Ethel has blinked through the lot, expect to be charged for re touching work. It is an expensive time consuming business. However in the same vein if there is only one photo taken of a key formal group it may be realistic to ask for eyes to be opened free of charge for example. Photographers of quality are not mean people by nature. They usually want the best for their customers. If this issue arises be reasonable. If you want retouching included be prepared to pay an increased fee for your package. There are photographers who may include it-they will be generally among the most expensive. As for me? Here are a few images from some of this seasons Weddings, for you to enjoy. After all good communication results in happy customers - provided you produce great images of course! To find out more call 01424 214072.

3)Guests A key part of any Wedding! You may plan your day like a military operation, but if your guests don’t know what’s happening through the day, they will often look dazed and confused! This goes back to ushers, and a good order of the day being given to guests either as running order, or verbally by the above. Another point worth mentioning is guests behaving badly. Although everyone likes to take photos, it is not appropriate to stand right behind a professional photographer distracting the people being photographed, and shouting ‘hold on I just want to get one’ This slows down your day, and will ruin some of your photographs....destroying your rapport with your photographer. 4) Make time! If you only want Observational shots (candid, reportage, photojournalistic are other names for this) it doesn’t matter so much, but generally customers want more than that. You will get out what you put in. Just because you buy all the best cake ingredients, it doesn’t make itself-you have to spend some time making it! This should be covered at the pre Wedding meet. Again unless you want all the candids of your guests to be pics of them staring at the back of a digital camera or mobile phone, it might be worth making it known pre Wedding they are there to enjoy your company, not enter into competition with the Pro- a competition where there are only losers unfortunately, especially YOU! Herald & Heart Hatters of Rye Herald & Heart operate from their beautiful Tudor built shop 102 High Street Rye. The shop is literally brimming with gorgeous millinery designed by Tracey Mogard who has been making hats for the past thirty years. Herald & Heart started in Battersea, London primarily as a theatrical milliners working on diverse theatre, film and TV projects ranging from “Poirot”, “Me and My Gal”, “Whoops Apocalypse!” and of course “Four Weddings and a Funeral”, which bolstered Herald & Heart’s profile around the world. The focus of the business quickly turned towards occasion hats for weddings, garden parties and Royal Ascot. Along with the growing fame the client base also rapidly grew, before long Herald & Heart was the most sought after hat label in London. In 1997 the business expanded and a further shop was opened in a different part of London. By this time Herald & Heart had established their international reputation selling their collections to boutiques and stores globally. The collections were to be seen on many a catwalk and were exhibited at London, New York and Paris Fashion Weeks, gracing such heads as Naomi Campbell, and Kate Moss. In 2002 Herald & Heart escaped the hurly burly of London and relocated to a far more sedate pace of life in Rye. It was a fantastic move, giving Tracey far more valuable time to do what she does best, which is designing and making beautiful hats. Many of the old clientele remain loyal and now visit the shop in Rye which has become the destination in the South for creative millinery. Tracey has always resisted the temptation to become elitist however, and her passion is to see beautiful hats being accessible to anyone who wants to add glamour and style to their outfits. HOMES & INTERIORS Sleep is one of the most important processes your body goes through and if there was a secret formula to sleeping well every night, we would be a much happier, healthier nation. A good night’s sleep will leave you invigorated, full of energy and in a premium state of health. From your immune system, memory, learning ability and temperament, to physical appearance (good quality sleep even slows down the ageing process), sleeping well results in a better quality of life. Unfortunately there is no such secret formula however Hästens believes that by sleeping on the right bed, you can provide your body with the comfort levels and conditions it needs to be fully rested and able to achieve the best night’s sleep possible.

and provide varying levels of support depending on gender, age, weight and lifestyle. “When choosing a mattress, avoid man-made fibres, foams and chemically processed materials such as latex”, he continues. “They interfere with natural ventilation and temperature control, reducing the quality of sleep. Natural fibres such as wool, cotton and horsehair feel far more luxurious and allow the bed to breathe helping you to maintain your natural body temperature and in turn get a better night’s sleep.”

Matt Parker, Director of the recently opened Walton on Thames store advises, “Comfort and support are the most important elements to consider when choosing a bed, so it is important to try out the bed you are planning on buying.

“Finally, I recommend taking your time over your decision and to try out as many different models and firmness levels as you can. At Hästens, we have a great range of styles, sizes, colours and firmness levels to match individual body requirements perfectly and personal sleep consultations are available in our UK concept stores to help you choose the best bed for you. We urge customers to come and ‘test drive’ the different models and experience Hästens for themselves.”

You must also try out different firmness levels as they will often differ from model to model

All Hästens beds are hand crafted by true bed masters. By using only natural, non-allergenic

raw materials including pine from the forests of northern Sweden, horse hair, pure wool, cotton and flax this ensures the highest quality of cushioning and comfort is achieved during the hours of sleep. The use of natural products also allows the beds to breathe at night maintaining your body temperature and helping you to have a better night’s sleep. Hästens has built upon a tradition which has been passed on through five family generations since it was founded in the 1800s. By combining traditional craftsmanship with the latest in bed spring technology, Hästens has become market leader in Sweden and Holland and has seen the opening of dedicated concept stores in Paris, New York and Hong Kong. The Hästens philosophy is a simple one, a good night’s sleep makes for a better quality of life. Your sleep affects your immune system, your memory, your mood, your appearance and your health. Hästens believes that the purchase of a bed should be seen as an investment in your personal well-being. To find out more we suggest you speak to your local bed centre.

Reflect upon a new television By Ian Isted Every one of us has the feeling sometimes that our television takes up a lot of space. New televisions can be mounted to walls, excellent, but we are missing out on wall space as well now.

When you would like some peace and quite from the vast array of programmes served to us you can simply switch the television off and be presented with a charming mirror replacement.

What if you could have a beautifully framed mirror on the wall that would also be your television? Mirror Televisions give us this luxury, and I believe are a must have for any living room, bedroom, dining room, or even bathroom.

Mirror televisions do not come at a low price however, you can easily pay an extra couple of thousand pounds for the privilege above the price of an equivalent LCD television.

Using a technique to pass light through the mirror means that you get a true mirror image when the television is switched off, and when switched on a clear and crisp image is displayed.

Personally I think this extra cost is a small price to pay for the clean, friendly style that it adds to your home. You will need to search for one though, they are not something you will pickup from your local television showroom.

Spot the TV?

HOMES & INTERIORS

"Colour can strongly influence our mood and behaviour patterns," says Sarah Quilliam. "From a very early age we learn to associate certain colours with different emotions or reactions, like red for danger or pink for love. We feel stimulated and energised by some colours, or soothed and relaxed by others. "Mentally and emotionally, colour works on a deep often, subconscious level, changing our mood and sense of well-being, as well as our perception of other people and theirs of us. Which could be why so many of us feel happier wearing 'safe' black rather than being a scarlet woman or yellow peril! "The same is often true in our homes. Most people opt for creams, whites and neutrals but by adding a few well-chosen touches of colour you can create different moods throughout the house. Blinds, cushions, rugs and throws are a quick and easy way to introduce splashes of ambient colour to help achieve the look and feel you want. Reddy for action A bold red will liven things up and inspire the family to be more active. As it's meant to stimulate both conversation and appetite, red is particularly good in kitchens, dining or living rooms.

Blinds featured are Suntime Tropics from Hillarys Rollers collection. Prices start at ÂŁ51 / 64 euros (61cm wide x 76cm drop) measured, made and fitted. Purple patch, Purple is royalty, a mysterious colour that is said to add an air of spirituality and intrigue to your home. A purple room is said to boost a child's imagination or an artist's creativity. Shades of purple such as lilac or violet can also lend a sense of calm and tranquillity ideal for a restful bedroom. Black mood, With the exception perhaps of angst-ridden teenagers, not many of us would go for floor to ceiling black. It does work brilliantly though as an accent colour where it can bring a touch of drama and glamour to a grown up room. To find out more you should contact one of the blind specialists in this magazine or on Online Aspect www.aspect-county.co.uk.

Orange appeal, Although blue is often a popular colour for bedrooms to induce a calm mood and enhance sleep, it is said that a splash of orange can kindle passion and warmth! Serene green, Soothing and tranquil, green has always been associated with nature and calm, restful reflection. Which makes it a perfect choice for bedrooms and living rooms. Cool blue, Said to stimulate the intellect and provoke creative thought, blue is authoritative, trustworthy and even said to ward off nightmares! All of which makes it ideal for studies and bedrooms. Yellow peril, Yellow is the colour of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy and therefore great for rooms where there's more going on - such as the kitchen or dining room. (It's also great in north facing conservatories, especially during the chillier winter months.) 71

B.C. Sanitan is famous for its classic designs with pure distinction. Beautiful at home, not only in traditional surroundings but also with the cool finishes and fresh colours of more modern day settings. There are now two roll top baths in the range - The Mark Anthony and The Highgrove. For sheer presence, the iconic cast iron double-ended bath can make a dramatic focal point for your bathroom. It's impressive enough even when not in use, but add some atmosphere, pour yourself a glass of your favourite wine and really soak away the evening in pure indulgence. The interior of the bath is finished in heavy white enamel, while the exterior surface is supplied unfinished ready for priming and painting to match your chosen scheme.

A showstopper in every sense, the Highgrove is guaranteed to get your bathroom noticed. The deep freestanding double-ended acrylic bath is designed specifically for use with the Highgrove suite, but the style is neutral enough for you to consider teaming with your existing suite. HOMES & INTERIORS

Reflex glass has developed a special type of glass that acts as a sunblock but with no effect on the view - in or out of the window. With the current lack of sunshine during British summers cynics may say it’s a waste of time having a conservatory, but on the odd day when the sun does pop out from behind the seemingly never-ending line of clouds, the conservatory is a great place to be. The trouble is, on a warm summer’s day, as we all know, the typical British conservatory can soon become unbearably hot, especially if it’s south-facing. Fifty degrees centigrade is not an uncommon temperature, even during the cooler evenings. Now, however, reflex glass of Leicester has developed a special double glazed glass unit which it claims reduces conservatory temperatures by at least 10 to 15 degrees centigrade in the summer, but maintains warmth in winter, thereby reducing energy bills. How does it do this? The company says it uses a special unique invisible ‘Sunstop’ lining material within the glazed unit which reflects back up to 92% of solar infra-red (the bit that does the heating) and 99% of UVA and UVB (the bit that does the fading and bleaching). That’s good news, not just for us humans, but for the expensive furniture and fittings with which we decorate this, the most favourite room in our house. Also, because the lining is invisible, the view from the conservatory is unaffected.

Managing Director Scott Nicholas is tremendously excited with the success of this product. “One day I was in my conservatory opening all the windows and closing the blinds only to find no real difference in the stifling conditions. I thought ‘what an opportunity for someone to solve this problem at source once and for all’. So I got to work with my design team and after a lot of co-ordinated effort and development time, we came up with a glass that really does work. I’m so confident of the product we give it a full twenty year unit seal warranty, twice the industry norm. That’s not all, every unit we produce here in Leicester comes with its own unique branded logo inside the glass for customers to identify that it’s 100% genuine reflex and not a cheaper copy cat.” Reflex supplies the glass in all standard thicknesses to suit roof, window and door glazing systems. The glass is available in blue tint or clear options and unlike ordinary glass, all units are treated with an easy clean stain guard which reduces the time and effort needed to clean the difficult-to-reach roof glass. Reflex products are only available through their network of authorised distributors. For more information, contact reflex glass on 0116 269 6297 or visit their website at www.reflexglass.co.uk

Up to now, the wealthy among us have installed expensive air conditioning but by far the majority of us simply install blinds which do a good job of cutting out the sun’s glare but do absolutely nothing to prevent the conservatory from over-heating. Opening the windows creates a draft but once again it never seems to solve the problem. Special blinds are becoming available which have sun-reflecting properties but these are very expensive. Reflex claim that fitting their unique glass can save thousands of pounds on retro-fit blinds and window film which many of us are using as a last resort to solve the drastic problem of excessive heat. 75

HOMES & INTERIORS

New coastal trail to impact South Coast house prices A new piece of government legislation – the Marine and Coastal Access Bill – is set to create a new 2,500 mile trail around the English coastline, providing greater access to some of our best loved and most impressive countryside. But, says solicitors Adams & Remers, home and land owners whose property fronts the coast or includes a private beach can expect to have their gardens opened up to ramblers, dog walkers, and members of the general public. The legislation, published in April this year, will afford greater protection to wildlife creating a number of new nature reserves. But as Natural England, the government’s adviser on the natural environment, reiterated earlier this month the legislation is likely to create a new ‘right to roam’ through private land and gardens along the English coastline. Paul Chaloner, a solicitor specialising in residential property with South Coast solicitors Adams & Remers, said: “Estimates suggest that up to 4,300 private homes and 700 estates and parks will be affected by the

proposed legislation, and with the value of homes expected to drop anywhere up to 20 per cent it is not surprising that affected homeowners are expressing some concern.” The rights being proposed by the Marine and Coastal Access Bill are similar to the rights of access over countryside and common land – the right to roam – introduced through the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 that gives the public access to mapped areas of moor land, mountains, down land, heath land, and registered common land. Detail on how the new coastal trail is to be implemented are still being discussed and decided, as Paul explains: “There is uncertainty about whether homeowners will be compensated for the loss of privacy they will experience and the duty of care they will owe to visitors if, for example, they suffer a fall or are harmed by livestock. “Buyers and sellers looking at coastal property will need to think carefully about the proposed Marine and Coastal Access Bill; the potential loss of privacy may well affect the value of the property and could lead purchasers to think twice about purchasing at all.”

Garden Kitchens Become Latest Big Trend in Home Improvements For a number of years the outdoor, or garden kitchen, has been a hugely popular home improvement trend in many parts of Europe, and the USA in particular. Now with a sharp increase in UK sales over the past year it looks like we Brit's have chosen the outdoor kitchen as our next must-have addition to the stylish home in which entertaining is key. One of the world's most highly regarded brand's of outdoor kitchens is the Lexius collection from manufacturer Newtrend. Made from solid oak these units are of unrivalled quality. Now, for the first time Lexius outdoor kitchens are available in the UK from sole UK distributor Garden Kitchens. Different to any other brand the Luxius range offers a superior grill that has been integrated into exclusively designed furniture. The unit creates a practical place to cook and is provided with many conveniences, finished within a sleek modern design. This unique combination is exclusive to Luxius. Luxius commissioned the leading architectural practice 'De Bats' to design two outdoor kitchens around the famous Luxius grill. The grill itself is equipped with everything required for high level grilling, baking, cooking and stir-frying. Matching cabinets have also been designed to create the best outdoor kitchen product on the market today. Cooking outside is a very special and social affair. It provides a wonderful ambiance and atmosphere in which the host may enjoy the party among the guests rather than being stuck in the kitchen away from all the fun. There's still plenty of time to have your Luxius outdoor kitchen installed to enjoy the rest of the summer months as distributor Garden Kitchens are currently quoting rapid delivery times of around just one week to most UK homes. Although perhaps previously thought of as an indulgence, the outdoor kitchen is now seen as a great addition to the home, and a sound

investment that will add value to a property. Garden Kitchens are also able to design and install bespoke outdoor kitchens to suit all needs. For further information on the Luxius range of outdoor kitchens and furniture visit the UK distributor's website at www.gardenkitchens.com.

LOCAL CHURCHES

The parish church of St Michael and All Angels in the village of Withyham, between Groombridge and Hartfield north of Crowborough, is on top of a small hill overlooking a lake and the rolling pastures of Buckhurst Park. Withyham was placed under the patronage of St Michael shortly after the Norman Conquest although the first recorded mention of a church was not until in 1291 when Edward I required monies to be paid to the Pope to help fund a crusade. Withyham’s contribution was valued at 45 marks, about £30. At the outbreak of war with France in 1324, Edward II sequestered all property belonging to foreign religious orders. This included Withyham which was then attached to a Benedictine Priory at Morteyn in France. A list of Rectors and Patrons of St Michael’s stretching back to 1328 is displayed in the church. During re-building of the church in the 14th century, the Sackville Chapel at the east end of the north aisle was added. The connection with the Sackville family goes back over 800 years. Jordan, grandson of Herbrand de Sauqueville, who took his name from the village of Sauqueville near Dieppe, married an heiress, Ela Dene, whose land in Sussex included the manor of Buckhurst in Withyham. Centuries later Lady Elizabeth Sackville, daughter of the 3rd Duke of Dorset, married George West, 5th Earl De La Warr, another Sussex family of great antiquity and prestige. Today, William, 11th Earl De La Warr, is Patron of St Michael’s. He and his wife Anne, Countess De La Warr, live in nearby Buckhurst House and regularly worship in the church.

made from fragments of medieval glass which survived the fire. The impressive east window above the altar was put in during the early nineteenth century and consists of ten panels which relate the story of the New Testament. Four paintings depicting the Passion of Christ, understood to be by Niccolo Di Pietro Gerini, the Florentine painter, were donated to the church in 1849. Now, because of their value, only facsimiles are displayed. The originals can be seen at Leeds Castle in Kent. The arch over the nave is dominated by a mural of The Last Judgement painted by Reverend The Hon Reginald Sackville-West, later to become 7th Earl De La Warr, when he was Rector from 1841 to 1865. The Sackville Chapel, with a vault beneath and enclosed by seventeenth century iron railings, contains many memorials to the Sackville and De La Warr families. An amorial stained-glass window illuminates the east wall. With funeral hatchments and ancient banners the chapel could be the setting for one of Shakespeare’s great English-monarch plays. The altar tomb, the work of Danish sculptor Caius Cibber, is that of young Thomas Sackville. At the side kneel marble life-size figures of his grief-stricken parents, the 5th Earl and Countess of Dorset. The poignant inscription includes, “Here Lyes The Thirteeneth Child And Seventh Son, Who Died In His Thirteenth Yeare His Race Had Run”. Other memorials record that Gilbert, 8th Earl De La Warr, was killed in action in World War I, and Flying Officer Thomas Henry Jordan Sackville, 2nd son of the 9th Earl De La Warr, died in air operations during World War II, six months before his 21st birthday.

In 1663 a thunderbolt struck the church spire, melting the bells in the belfry and almost destroying the entire building by fire. The only parts of the original church remaining are the north wall, south chancel wall, and the lower part of the tower. Rebuilding work was not completed for almost ten years. A sundial above the porch of the south door with the initials ‘IB’, Isaac Burgess, Rector at the time and the date 1672, commemorates the re-opening of the church. The opportunity was also taken to enlarge the Sackville Chapel which fills the north east corner of the church. The chapel is still privately owned by the Sackville family and does not come under the jurisdiction of the Bishop. The bells were also recast, and again in 1908 when a further two were added. These provide today’s magnificent eight-bell peal.

The Rector (now the Priest-in-Charge) of St Michael’s is Reverend Adrian Leak, who formerly held positions as Archivist at York Minster, and Precentor at Guildford Cathedral. Living in the adjacent eighteenth century rectory he oversees a vibrant church community in Withyham and the surrounding area.

In the churchyard, outside the south entrance, is a rosemary bush. Rosemary, the traditional symbol of remembrance, re-affirms it is better to embrace the future rather than the past. Pluck a sprig as you enter the church for a wedding or a funeral. The weight of history is inescapable at St Michael and All Angels but this timelessness also generates a feeling of enlightenment.

Award winning company, Frogheath Landscapes have taken on 2 horticultural students from Lempdes in France for their 2 month work experience. The company were approached by their college, The Lycee Louis Pasteur because Frogheath Landscapes are members of The Association of Professional Landscapers. The teachers want their students to have a valuable experience and Frogheath prides itself on the work it does and the staff that are employed. “We have a fantastic team” said Steve Moody Frogheaths owner “they are all committed to the industry and have already gained or continue to train for further qualifications, which is great” he added. The company explained to the French college that they only wanted very good, well motivated students and they have not been disappointed. The 2 students Romaine aged ?? and Baptiste aged?? are amongst only 9 students from their college who secured placements in the UK. Their professors visited them at Frogheath Landscapes and commented on the quality of the work that they saw. The students have been involved in creating a substantial garden involving a range of skills on the Sussex Kent border. The professors had a chance to visit one of the company’s gardens that won The Supreme overall garden construction award, built by Frogheath in 2004. They were very impressed with the way that the garden blended so seamlessly with the countryside in which it was situated and they talked about how the disciplined use of local materials made it seem as if “it had been there forever”. Many French students see the public parks as a more usual route for their future employment and Romaine and Baptiste have enjoyed the

opportunity with Frogheath to experience domestic landscape works that generally would not be open to them in France. Frogheath has been able to welcome the 2 boys as part of their team which includes other young working men who want to learn some of the French horticultural techniques. They are particularly skilled at working soil levels to an exacting finish which has been of real benefit on the project the company are currently working on. The students have enjoyed their time in Sussex a great deal with visits to The South of England Show, the circus, the pub of course in moderation and visits to the coast and the bright lights of London and Brighton. They had an adventure in Brighton when they topped up a diesel vehicle with petrol! They had to test their English to the limits before they were rescued!

Romaine said “ The experience has been really good, we have learned a different side of horticulture and improved our English, the family we stay with are very good.” And Baptiste added that he was glad that the college found them such a rewarding placement.

The owners of Frogheath Landscapes Alison and Stephen Moody agreed that it was an experience they would repeat. “ I think everyone has benefited from this, we asked for quality students that would match our needs and that is what we got, we hope that they will return to France with positive memories about Our business, the county of Sussex and Britain in general.” To find out more contact 01435 883516. 89

PERSONAL FINANCE

The Truth About Money By Mike Robertson, Independent Financial Adviser Each month I am going to give you an insight into the truth about your money, including a few money saving tips. There is no time like the present to overhaul your finances and managing personal finance adeptly is the key in securing a brighter financial future for your family. In the grand scheme of things, money is not that important, however it is significant because it allows you to enjoy what is important to you. Not worrying about your finances is critical to having a life that excites you, nurtures those you love, and fulfils your highest aspirations. It is said that if you want to manage something (Money, Relationships, etc), you must be able to understand them first. In other words, if you cannot understand them properly, you really cannot manage it well. Your personal finances & tax also falls within the above concept. So how do you know whether you are doing well with your finances or not? To manage your wealth appropriately it is always a good idea to have some sort of financial strategy in mind. Unfortunately, there are no offthe-shelf solutions; every single individual has their own personal monetary concerns, responsibilities and ambitions. The economic solutions that work for one, simply would not work for another. By defining your unique values, it will help you to create a plan that not only looks good on paper but one that will spur you to follow through. Most of us have a financial future regardless of age and net worth and by following your plan it will help you to appreciate what is important to you. By aligning your financial choices with the goals of life you are aiming to achieve you will become inspired to do whatever it takes to accomplish that life. Every great triumph has a sound approach behind it, and creating the economic future you desire is no different. Impulsiveness definitely spices up your life, but having no goal plan is a recipe for weakness. What would have happened if the American Olympian swimmer, Michael Phelps had winged it whilst training, or if Paula Radcliffe had given up after sustaining first a toe injury, and then a hip stress fracture in her training? Many people who will never make the headlines create the good life for themselves by defining their life goals, via a strategy, which greatly eliminates their financial stress. By creating a financial strategy how would your life be different? What is truly important to you?

What would your life be like if your investments and insurances were working in harmony to achieve your goals? This would be a stark contrast to what most people have attained, which is a hotchpotch of financial products purchased one by one over the years from various salespeople, banks or based on tips from friends and information gleaned from the web, newspapers or magazines. As much as approaching finances strategically sounds like common sense, most people wind up reacting to events rather than designing and implementing a financial plan. They buy to meet needs that may be real or the product of media hype. Taking care of your money is simple, time consuming, but simple. For most people it is a hassle or a distraction from what’s really important to them. To implement a sound monetary plan start by making smart financial choices based on what is important to you. Identify your values, set your goals, benchmark your current financial reality, create a financial road map and lastly, re-educate yourself on the rudiments of financial terminology or if you find all of this too much of a hassle speak to an independent financial planner who will guide you in creating and implementing a financial stratagem. This Months Top Tip - The Truth about Money is‌ waking up to the fact that your life is not a rehearsal, and that precious time is slipping away. It is, when you can stop doing what you no longer enjoy and start doing the things you really love, the things that give your life meaning. It is what you want to do with what little time you have left on this planet. It is what you need to do to ensure you never run out of money. It is what you need to do to ensure your family are completely financially secure whatever happens. Mike Robertson Associates Limited will help you identify what is important to you, the things that you want to achieve in your lifetime. We will carry out a financial planning analysis not only are the details of your income, outgoings, assets and liabilities considered, but resources that may become available to you in your lifetime. This gives an accurate measure of your net worth and current and future financial situation. We help you estimate the cost of the life you want to enjoy in years to come. MOTORING

In 1948, Jaguar created what would become one of the most famous automotive names in the world, as the all-new and highly advanced XK engine made its debut in the revered XK120 sports car. Now, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of that iconic car, Jaguar is launching a very special series of the current XK for the UK market – the uniquely equipped and aptly named XK60, a car that pays homage to the legendary performance of its predecessors. Much has changed in those 60 years, but the Jaguar ethos of beautiful, fast cars remains as true today as it did in 1948. The current XK range was the first of the modern breed of Jaguars to introduce the marque’s new design language as well as the technologically acclaimed advanced lightweight architecture. Like every Jaguar to carry the XK badge, the XK60 is all about performance with style – plus a large helping of individuality. And as the XKR Portfolio and XKR-S Special Editions brought something extra to the supercharged XK models, XK60 offers its own spin on the naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 XK, in both coupé and convertible forms. XK60s will be built from July 2008. The car offers a host of additional extras beyond the XK’s already impressive specification at no extra cost. For following another Jaguar tradition, every XK60 will be a hugely desirable car with an impressively accessible price tag. The XK60 customer will benefit from dramatic 20-inch Senta alloy wheels, a sporty alloy gear knob and selector-gate surround, plus distinctive body enhancements: a new front spoiler and rear valance 94

panel, chrome-finished side vents and bright upper and lower front grille meshes, special tailpipe finishers and appliqués on both sides of the car. Sixty years on, the 2008 XK sits as far above the crowd as its namesake did in 1948. It has the same sporting DNA, the same stunning eye for proportion and detail, the same dynamic focus for the driver who loves driving. And where the original XK120 introduced an engine whose sophistication rewrote the production car rule-book in its day, the XK60 bristles with technical sophistication of its own. Jaguar’s advanced all-aluminium construction makes the XK60 the lightest yet strongest car in its class; CATS Computer Active Technology Suspension underpins its perfect balance of control and agility with comfort and refinement; its six-speed automatic transmission is recognised as one of the world’s best; and like the ground-breaking XK120, the XK60 is powered by an acclaimed engine – in this case the 298PS 4.2-litre AJ-V8. From launch, this all-alloy, four-camshaft, 32-valve gem had the best specific power and torque of any engine in its class, the lightest weight, the lightest valve gear (even with its variable inlet valve timing), and the stiffest structure. In other words, it was another outstanding engine at the heart of another outstanding XK. So the 60th anniversary of the XK name is a milestone well worth celebrating, and the XK60 is a unique car to show that modern Jaguar still has the power to surprise and delight.

MOTORING As the bi-annual British Motor Show opens its doors to the public at Excel in London’s Docklands, Goodwood announces the recreation of the classic London Motor Show, as held immediately post-War at Earls Court. Goodwood’s Earls Court facility will add an exciting new element to the annual Goodwood Revival meeting, the world’s most authentic historic motor race meeting.

In addition to the manufacturers’ stands, there will be a central ‘concours d’elegance’ exhibition staged in association with BGC, the voice and electronic brokerage specialists. This display will commemorate ‘the Fastest Car in the World’, featuring around 25 performance cars from the 1920s, right through to the present day, all of which were the most rapid cars in production at the time.

The Goodwood Earls Court Motor Show exhibition area will take its inspiration from the celebrated London Motor Shows, with an original Art Deco frontage reminiscent of the glory days of exhibitions of the past. This spacious new area will give the expected 115,000 Goodwood Revival visitors an insight into how motoring of the future might look from a pre-1966 perspective, with a display of ‘futuristic’ 21st century cars.

Goodwood’s historic links with Earls Court are very strong. The famous London Earls Court exhibition site was built on land once owned by the Duke of Richmond; the Earl in the name referring to the Earl of March, from which the present 10th Duke of Richmond, and his son Lord March, are directly descended.

Externally Earls Court looks like the entrance to a 1950s Motor Show, promising to display ‘cars of the future’ inside. As no post-1966 vehicles are ordinarily allowed on site during the Goodwood Revival, the Earls Court Motor Show will enable the event to break out of its ‘period’ timeframe and display post-1966 vehicles. The effect will be like walking into a Tardis, offering other-worldly futuristic new cars to see, right up to and including manufacturers’ latest products. Each stand will be presented in the style of a traditional Motor Show of the 1950s or 1960s. As with the rest of the Revival, the overall display will not be set in a specific timeframe, but rather at some unidentified point prior to 1966. Manufacturer displays are therefore expected to include contemporary cars of the 1950s or 1960s, as well as some ‘concept’ cars showing each company’s visions of what production cars might look like in the early 21st Century. Car manufacturers confirmed to be exhibiting at this ‘motor show of the future’ will include Maserati, Jaguar, BMW, Ford and Rolls-Royce.

96

To assist in the unveiling of the Goodwood Revival Earls Court building, a number of Oil Exco models were on hand to pose with some iconic Motor Show cars of the past to provide some traditional Motor Show glamour. Goodwood Revival founder, Lord March, says, “The challenging sweeps and bends of the historic Goodwood track will not be the only curves to watch at this year’s Revival. It’s great to see such nice bodywork on the cars, and the girls!” The historic Goodwood Motor Circuit celebrates two significant anniversaries in 2008. Foremost is the 60th anniversary of the now legendary circuit, which opened its gates to the public in September 1948 to host Britain’s very first post-War motor race meeting at a permanent venue. The Goodwood Revival, devised to celebrate those early halcyon days of motor racing at the famous West Sussex-based circuit, also marks its own 10th landmark anniversary this year, and many special features are planned to mark the occasion, in addition to Earls Court.

With the introduction of the new 911 Targa this autumn, Porsche is completing the fastest ever generation change in the 911 model series. Two new power units with Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) improve both the performance and economy of the car, the fast-shifting Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) - or double-clutch gearbox - replaces the optional Tiptronic S automatic transmission, and electronicallycontrolled Porsche Traction Management (PTM) takes the place of the former viscous-coupling all-wheel drive system. The latest addition to the new generation 911 line-up comes as before in two variants; 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S. The Targa 4 version is powered by a 3.6-litre flat-six engine developing maximum output of 345 bhp (254 kW) and giving the car a top speed of 176 mph. The power unit featured in the Targa 4S displaces 3.8-litres, developing maximum output of 385 bhp (283 kW), and accelerates this outstanding sports car to a top speed of 185 mph. The visual highlight of the 911 Targa remains the distinctive 1.54square metre glass roof made up of two segments; the elegant sliding roof above the occupants and the versatile top-hinged tailgate. When opened completely, the roof slides beneath the tailgate within seven seconds to offer an open space above the passenger compartment of 0.45 square metres. The sliding roof comes as standard with a new electrically-controlled sun-blind, which offers increased shading than that fitted previously. When closed, this spans the entire area of the sliding roof, and can be opened and closed independently of the roof itself. The glass roof and the tailgate are manufactured from speciallytreated glass designed to deflect the sun’s glare, thereby protecting the occupants even in bright sunshine from UV radiation and excessive heat. The 911 Targa 4 models share their all-new flat-six engines with Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) with the sister models in the next generation 911 line-up. With the launch of the new 911 Carrera model series, Porsche is introducing direct fuel injection in the company’s range of sports cars. The advantages are an increase in engine power by up to 8.5 per cent, a reduction in fuel consumption by 11.2 per cent, and a decrease in CO2 emissions by 13.6 per cent, depending on the respective model and its features. Specifically, output of the 3.6-litre power unit is up by 20bhp to 345 bhp (254 kW). The improvements on the 911 Targa 4S with its 3.8-litre power unit are equally significant, with maximum output up by 30bhp to 385 bhp (283 kW). The driver benefits from a further advantage of direct injection every time he touches the throttle pedal: with fuel being injected fractions of a

second prior to combustion, the engines respond more directly and spontaneously to even the slightest movement of the driver’s right foot. This is not only the case when accelerating, but also when lifting off the throttle, for engine speed drops more quickly and smoothly since there is no residual fuel left in the intake manifold which might otherwise prolong the combustion process. Depending on engine load and speed, fuel is injected into the combustion chamber at a pressure of 120 bar. The big advantage is that unlike conventional intake manifold injection, direct fuel injection serves to form the fuel/air mixture directly in the combustion chamber. This better mixes the air and fuel in the cylinder, establishing an important prerequisite for clean and complete combustion. This ensures the ‘homogeneous’ operation of the power unit with a consistent balance of the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber at all times and under all running conditions. Such smooth operation guarantees optimum combustion and maintains low emissions, across a range of fuel qualities. As with the second generation 911 models series overall, these latest 911 Targa models are distinguished by the discreet modification of the nose and tail and the use of new lighting technology. All 911 Carrera models feature, as standard, bi-xenon headlights and new LED daytime driving lights. Dynamic Cornering Lights are available as an option. Like the 911 Carrera 4 and 4S models, the Targa 4 and 4S is 44mm, or 1.73”, wider across the rear wheel arches than the two-wheel drive 911. Further definition and character is added courtesy of a new reflective trim that spans the width between the LED rear lights. Inside the 911, the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) centre console with its larger, touch-sensitive screen improves operation of the audio system and optional satellite navigation to an even higher standard. And a further important point is that PCM is now compatible with Bluetooth, USB and iPod requirements. The second generation Porsche 911 Targa 4 models go on sale in Great Britain and Ireland on October 25. The Targa 4 Coupe 3.6-litre is priced from £72,980, and the Targa 4S Coupe 3.8-litre is priced from £80,270. Fitted to every 911 is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car on a Porsche Driving Experience course. 97

The all-new 2009 Cadillac CTS luxury saloon arrives in UK showrooms from 1 September 2008. With a dramatic coupe-like profile, the new right-hand drive CTS has a lavish specification as standard. Prices will start at £26,995 for the 211 ps 2.8 V6 model and at £32,995 for the 311 ps 3.6 V6 model. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. An advanced 2.9 litre V6 diesel engine will join the new CTS line-up in 2009. Both front-engine rear-wheel drive sport saloon models feature a single premium ‘Sport Luxury’ specification with a class-leading level of standard equipment, exceptional refinement, and a performanceoriented driving experience. Standard equipment on both models is so comprehensive that the factory options list has only two items – other than choice of paint finish, which includes nine solid, metallic, Tri-coat, Tintcoat, and ChromaFlair® colours. Option 1 is the power glass ‘Ultra View’ sunroof that covers more than 70% of the roof, giving both front- and rear-seat passengers a sky view, and costs £1,200. For £495 customers can specify Option 2, the ‘Sapele Pommele’ wood finish on the instrument panel, door trims and centre console. The 3.6 model has all the features of the 2.8, but also comes with paddle shift controls for the six-speed automatic transmission, highperformance tuned self-levelling rear suspension, chrome finish for the 18-inch alloy wheels, dual chrome-tipped exhaust tail pipes, and voice activation for the infotainment system. The new model is longer, wider and higher than the previous CTS, giving a more planted, well-grounded appearance. The wider stance is also accentuated by increased tumblehome, with the vehicle sides sculpted inwards to give a more dynamic appearance and a sleeker roof line, without compromising headroom or the spacious interior. 98

The ‘tauter’ more precise styling of the 2009 CTS is complemented by the larger diameter wheels and tyres which completely fill the smoothly flared wheel arches. Shod with low profile 235/50 R18 tyres, the ninespoke, 18-inch wheels – with premium multicoat paint on the 2.8 and a high-polish finish on the 3.6 – are in turn packed with larger, highperformance brake callipers and ventilated discs. The 2009 CTS cabin represents an evolution for Cadillac interiors. Advances in surface development, technology, materials and construction, all combine to highlight technical precision with elegant, hand-crafted details and precise tailoring. An exceptionally strong unitary bodyshell structure plays a key role in delivering the smooth ride, precise handling and quiet, refined driving characteristics of the 2009 Cadillac CTS. The new bodyshell is a stiff structure with strategically placed enhancements that help provide world-class crash protection, a sharper driving feel and improved suppression of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). The new Cadillac CTS is available in the UK with a choice of two powertrains. The standard engine is a 2.8-litre V6 petrol unit with variable valve timing (VVT), which generates 211 ps at 6,800 rpm and 246 Nm of torque at 6,300 rpm. This power unit is an all-aluminium, 60-degree V6 with a DOHC per cylinder bank and four-valves-percylinder. For customers in search of more performance, the 2009 CTS can also be ordered with a new 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine that combines greater power with smoothness, efficiency and technical sophistication. Fitted with direct injection and VVT, this engine produces 311 ps at 6,400 rpm and 374 Nm of torque at 5,200 rpm.
