Tucked down a farm track, and surrounded by the beautiful rolling hills of East Sussex, Catsfield Place is an impressive Grade II Listed property which is approached through double electric gates and is surrounded by its own land totalling approximately 3 acres. The house itself is bursting with history – the current owner, Carol-Ann Purkis says “The fantastic staircase, which is heavy oak, originates from Hampton Court Palace and bears a carving of the year 1685”.
She continues “Rumour has it that former priest holes at Catsfield Place led all the way to Battle Abbey, which is almost two miles away. Even more incredible, and my personal favourite story, is the fact that Marie Antoinette is believed to have stored her jewellery in the massive safe, in what we now call the Music Room, prior to her execution in 1793”. In the older part of the house, the wonderful drawing room features an enormous inglenook fireplace, and the family-size kitchen is a focal point for the whole house. The dining room benefits from wallpaper by Nina Campbell – style is clearly an important factor for CarolAnn and her husband, Paul Suppu. This is proven further still by the recent careful uncovering of the original flagstone flooring in the downstairs hallway, as well as restoring Victorian tiles elsewhere in the house. Step through an unassuming door at the back of Family Room, and enter an entirely different world – a world of fun and games, health and fitness. A 10m x 5m swimming pool dominates the enormous south-facing pool room, along side which is a Jacuzzi. To the other side is a sauna, steam and massage room, a gymnasium and a separate kitchen and bathroom for entertaining by the pool. The bar-room is off the pool room and features a full-size dark wood bar, bench seats, and beyond is the office complex which comprises

three separate rooms which can be accessed from outside or the main house itself. A large and comfortable media room sits on the south east corner of the building. Catsfield Place sits only 4 miles by road from the shops and mainline station at Battle, and just 6.5 miles from Bexhill, with its wide range of shops and recreational facilities. Catsfield Place is a stunning country home where old and new, formality and informality live side by side – to view this “jewel”, please contact Batcheller Thacker on 01424 775577 or visit www.batchellerthacker.co.uk.

Savills are selling a substantial six bedroom property set within 2.8 acres of private gardens and 22 acres of communal woodland. The house is located in a secluded position in an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beatuy’ on the Ashdown Forest, which is known across the world as the ‘home’ of AA Milne’s Winnie the Pooh and his friends. This impressive property was built as part of an exclusive gated development by Millwood Designer Homes Ltd in 2002 and benefits from well presented flexible accommodation of 4,693 sq ft arranged over three floors. The accommodation includes a spacious reception hall with hand carved oak panelling and a delightful curved oak staircase, four well proportioned reception rooms each with views across the gardens and grounds, a large family kitchen/breakfast room and six bedrooms (four of which are en suite) with the master bedroom including a dressing area. Outside, the property benefits from a formal south facing rear garden which has a paved terrace providing an excellent entertaining area and a large area of lawn with some landscaped shrub borders and mature trees. To one side is an enclosed vegetable garden and to the other is a brick garden store with up-and-over door. Wrought iron gates with stone columns provide access from the formal area of garden to the private woodland which surrounds the property on two sides and includes chestnut trees and bluebells. Beyond this are 22 acres of shared woodland offering a wide variety of mature trees and wild flora, which leads straight out on to Ashdown Forest. The Ashdown Forest was originally a deer hunting forest in Norman times, however it is now the largest free public space access in the South East and offers various walking and riding opportunities. For everyday needs the picturesque village of Hartfield has a good range of local amenities with Tunbridge Wells, East Grinstead and Forest Row providing a more comprehensive range. Fast mainline rail services to London terminals can be found at Tunbridge Wells and Haywards Heath. Robert Jacobs of Savills comments “this exclusive gated community of houses is ideal for those looking for a large, easily maintained country home, with an emphasis on security”. Down on the Farm By Roger Paine Parts of Kent and East Sussex are known affectionately as the “Garden of England” and repeated showings of “The Darling Buds of May” continue to invoke images of bucolic bliss. The reality for many farmers, however, is rather different. Struggling to recover from major setbacks - mad-cow disease, foot and mouth, constant changes in European subsidies - some are either giving up altogether, or selling their inherited farmhouses to raise capital whilst they continue farming the acres, but no longer live on the farm. The current global food crisis has provided the opportunity for some arable communities to see light at the end of the tunnel but the majority of farmers now appreciate that farming is a business of marginal profitability and it is their farmhouse, and their land, which are the prime assets. As the fortunes of farmers have tumbled, so the incomes of those who earn their living elsewhere, especially in London, have soared. It used to be a former rectory or vicarage which would have been the type of house favoured by families seeking to purchase a substantial, but still affordable, home in the country. As these have become less available, it is now the old farmhouse which has become most sought after, even in the current depressed property market. Farmhouses have the added advantage that they usually have a number of outbuildings which tend to convert well into childrens’ playrooms, mother-in-law annexes, or offices where one, or both, parents can work from home. The sturdy good looks of a farmhouse are another asset, and those built in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries were soundly constructed using quality materials. Like coveted antiques, most have aged well. Estate agents confirm that former farmhouses are frequently top of the ‘wish-list’ for City high-flyers moving out of London. Properties which are an established part of the local agricultural community and enjoy views across unspoiled countryside are especially attractive for those ‘townies’ who value the environment and consider themselves ‘green’.
12
At the same time, farmers have a reputation for resilience and although they have been experiencing hard times, some have been astute enough to sell off their land piecemeal, possibly for equestrian use, or have converted their outbuildings into offices, workshops or for holiday lets. In these cases, they retain their heirloom farmhouse which has the effect of increasing the value of other farmhouses, probably sold by a farmer a generation or two earlier, when they come on the market. Nevertheless, owning a farmhouse together with farmland can be attractive to non-farmers, especially if they are able to convince HM Revenue and Customs they qualify for Agriculture Property Relief and will not therefore be liable for Inheritance Tax. It is also easier these days to contract out your land to be farmed by someone else. Many farms in Kent and Sussex, which traditionally combined both livestock and arable operations, had timber-framed hall houses with a red-brick façade added in the Georgian era. With an oast house located nearby, these farmhouses have become distinctive landmarks. A large proportion have been separated from their land and together with interesting historical features will usually include that most desirable element of a family house, a huge eat-in farmhouse kitchen. Today it will probably be Smallbone-designed with an Aga or French range cooker recommended by a celebrity chef, discreet low-voltage lighting and a sub zero fridge. Other features which no self-respecting farmhouse could now be considered to be complete without include antique French oak floors with underfloor heating, an outbuilding that has been transformed into a gym, an indoor swimming pool or home cinema, a 4x4 in a heated garage and a quad bike. A dog, designer rather than working, is obligatory. Old MacDonald may no longer have a farm, but there are a great many people who would like to own his farmhouse!

Do you love the thought of owning a home in the sun but care about how modern property developments affect the environment and community around them? Then let us introduce to you Sambala. Sambala is on the beautiful island of Santiago; the largest of a group of ten islands located in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean, 450km off the west coast of Africa called the Cape Verde islands. They are Europe’s closest tropical island chain and are just a five and a half hour flight away. Being only one hour behind GMT means there is no jet lag and they benefit from stunning weather all year round, with a consistently good temperature averaging 22-27 degrees. There are no known tropical diseases and the islands latitude means that they don’t suffer from hurricanes.
into an odourless pellet which will be used to fertilise the planting in combination from the seed cake from the Jatropha plant. Sambala are a socially responsible project, sponsoring a number of initiatives in schools including providing teachers, books and computers with courses for learning English and French and vocational training in aspects of the leisure industry. They employ directly and indirectly, approximately 500 people from Santiago Island. The key workforce is encouraged to learn English as it will be these workers which will eventually work servicing the resort and its' guests.
Sambala has pledged to protect and conserve the 5 varieties of turtles (Loggerhead, Leatherbacks, green, hawksbills and Olive Ridley). Santiago is one of the most interesting of the nine inhabited Islands, with a lush mountain interior and pristine sandy beaches nestled into a jagged coastline. Banana, coconut and sugar cane plantations nestle into valleys before they meet the clear blue sea. Culturally diverse, Santiago is the most African of the Islands with traditional festivals throughout the year and a major carnival. The City of Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, is situated here and now has an international airport and a large commercial port. This will attract tourists that are expected to grow to over 1 million by 2015. (Tourism increased 11.5% during 2007 to 313,000)
To understand Sambala is to understand the vision of Sambala as a 'sustainable development, smart investment'. The vision of sustainable development stems from the fact that as the largest private land owner in Cape Verde, with a 20 sq km parcel of land, Sambala has very considerable responsibilities to sustain both Cape Verde and her people. £8 million has already been spent on Electricity, sewage, irrigation with €3.6 million spent on the water desalination plant. Sambala have recently invested €3.6 million into a reverse osmosis desalination plant which re-uses 85% of its power through an energy recovery system. The waste water treatment plant can recycle 80% of the water and this is used for irrigation of the planted areas. The bio reactor uses natural biomass to break down human solid waste and then converts it 16
Sambala has also created a recycling area for plastic and glass and is also planning construct an asphalt production plant to use these materials to produce tarmac which will be used for road building in Santiago and the resort. One third of Sambalas' 20 sq km of land will be a conservation zone or biological corridor with eco observation stations and wilderness trails for tourists and the local community. The ratio of construction/ green areas within the resort runs at 28/72 %. A ratio that is unprecedented in other developments.
Each property is constructed from an 85% recycled steel frame that is externally clad (made from old Cadillacs) which minimizes the use of precious resources locally. The steel frame negates the necessity to use water, sand and lime and is a much faster and lower energy method of construction. Sambala is currently monitoring two different types of solar panels with a view to incorporate them into the next phase to add to the suite of energy saving and clean development mechanisms. There are a range of key ready properties or off plan investments available. Prices start from £189,000 for a two bedroom townhouse. We think you’ll agree that Sambala are creating a very special resort, if you would like more information, to visit the Oxford showroom or to arrange an inspection trip, please call Bricks Abroad on 0800 1804789.

The Ideal Property Book ‘The Ideal Property Book’ written by surveyor Charles Stimpson offers good sound practical advice to owners and tenants regardless of current property market trends. The book is marketed as something every home should have. The 288 page book is full of practical pointers on ‘….what to do if….’ topics covered include advice on today’s issues - what to do if your mortgage payments become difficult and advice on whether you need planning for an office building in your garden, neighbour issues, boundaries, builders, hedges and advice about altering your home among over 130 topics addressed. The book is not aimed at profit from property but is packed with advice on how to deal with everyday property questions with something for everyone - whether they own or rent, or are just leaving home; whether they’ve lived in the same property for years or move regularly; whether they buy to live in or to improve or to rent out; and for tenants. The Ideal Property Book was conceived by Charles Stimpson, a Kent based practicing chartered surveyor, to address many property difficulties that arise from a lack of basic property knowledge. He says: “Many of the difficulties that people encounter could have been avoided if detailed yet concise information had been available to them in one comprehensive volume. The book aims to simplify access to this knowledge’’. Over 130 topics are covered in The Ideal Property Book, advising and informing readers and clearly set out for everybody dealing with houses
20
and apartments, as owners or as tenants. Even home owners or tenants who have lived in the same home for years and have no intention of moving will find many sections of this book useful. Details on which specialist bodies to contact and further useful information sources such as websites are also included. A unique feature of this book is the creation of a complementary website www.theidealpropertybook.com where a full list of the topics covered can be seen and where readers will be able to comment on sections or suggest updates for future editions of the book, keeping it up to date. Charles Stimpson has used his extensive knowledge, gained both in a professional capacity and from having restored and renovated several houses, to write The Ideal Property Book. His in-depth knowledge of house construction and defects, and first hand professional experience, often dealing with disputes that could have been avoided if better knowledge had been available to the parties in the first place, provides an ideal base for the book and, rather than focus on profit in a changeable market, the result serves as an enduring source of facts and data that will prove useful to everyone. When many books only cover how to make a profit from your existing home before moving on, it’s a refreshing change to find one that also covers how to stay in your current home.

TRAVEL
Canal Boating, A Holiday Back In Vogue By Cindy-Lou Dale is a storied country. Cavernous gothic cathedrals, little temples of great food and F rance ambiance in leafy areas of quiet prosperity, landscapes of small farms and secluded castles offering long views across softening cloaks of green. Burgundy, its crown jewel, has rarer beauty still with its placid teal-green canals, steepedroofed medieval homes buried under trellises hanging heavy with scented roses, quiet market squares and gently dozing people. Here you’ll not find yuppie bars and designer restaurants as this is home to silversmiths and artisan jewellers, cobwebs and musty smells, enticing diversions, freshly baked bread, shopkeepers gossiping in doorways and children chasing chickens. Locals greet one another with two-cheeked kisses and wreath themselves in blue Gauloises smoke. You’ll never once see a shady street you wouldn’t want to live on, a tavern you wouldn’t like to get to know, a lush view you wouldn’t wish to call my own. It’s all so hopelessly romantic.
One morning I took an interesting detour at a pretty, worn around the edges, hamlet that was just beginning to stir. Shutters were rattling open and chairs were being set outside cafes. Off a shady square I found myself in a network of echoing alleyways, cool and shadowy, and richly aromatic. At the brow of a steep hill stood a tavern in glorious seclusion, looking across a snug and restful vineyard; it was expansive and charming in a way that brought to mind a child’s picture book. Plump chairs and sagging sofas were scattered
Everyday life often gets in the way of living, making it imperative that you break away from routine affairs to recharge your soul, and reconnect with your partner and kids. Yet soaring fuel prices, rare flight deals, and the plunging pound, may have you believing that cheap holidays on the Continent are over. They’re not! A high speed train into one of the many European capitals’ will deliver you to a longforgotten voyage of discovery, one that’s been revived and brought back into vogue – canal boating. Follow one of the many river boat trails and let the gentle current glide you beneath medieval castles and abbeys, alongside some the world’s most renowned vineyards, and through idyllic hamlets filled with inviting restaurants, past charming terraces and waving locals. Here history and nature become your travel companions. With no helm experience required, you can explore the most diverse areas of Europe at the wheel of your own traditional canal boat. Moor at a rural parish, take your bikes and head into the village to source a local Chardonnay, locally cured ham and cheese. Then dine el fresco on the deck, taking in the seductive hush and suck of the lapping waters, which will lull your thoughts as you gaze upon sun-leathered old fishermen snatching dinner from the canal; their low intense voices sounding like water over rocks, bubbling, soft, incessant.
Apart from the surprisingly affordable price (a week long family break costs less than a weekend for two in Paris), what makes the latest boating holidays unique is the innovative ‘green’ design of the boats. Bring together a cheerful house boat and an elegant sea-going yacht, add to that exceptional luxury, design comfort and space, and you’ve created the award winning Penichette – the environmentally friendly part solar-powered canal boat designed specifically for silently cruising on inland waterways and rivers. Then there’s the equally quiet bio-diesel powered Europa boats that ensure minimal harmful emissions. No licence is required, so the whole family can try their hand at steering. European Boating Holidays are offering a two-weeks-for-the-price-of-one deal to Aspect County readers. This offer is subject to availability for holidays booked and taken by the end of October 2008 to any destination – France, Holland, Italy, Ireland, Poland or Germany. For holidays booked during October but taken later, you’ll enjoy a 10% discount. To find out more visit www.europeanboatingholidays.co.uk or call 0845 450 5229. 22
about the room – an engagingly old boy’s club atmosphere. The bar was liberally arrayed with locals, so I procured a beer and sat primly in a corner surveying the fog threaded canal below. Beside a roaring fire sat an old man who looked as if he spent his whole life sitting there, quietly drinking. He seemed to be a genial fellow with the lean bearing and far-off gaze of someone whose world is the outdoors. In pigeon-French I asked if I could join him beside the fire, adding helpfully, I thought, that I was cruising Burgundy on a canal boat. With a stately lack of haste he removed the
toothpick resting on his tongue, took a long pull on his pint and grew momentarily thoughtful. “Aye lass,” he said, in a broad Scottish accent. “Suppose you can.” He proceeded to tell of his move to France, and life on his canal boat, moving from village to village, whenever it pleased him. “You cannot fail to be deeply moved by the beauty of this country,” he announced, gesticulating at lush scenic landscape. “And the girls...”, he placed his fingers to pursed lips. “They’re wonderful.” Later I returned to my canal boat, sustained by the thought that at least my future holidays were sorted.

LOCAL NEWS New Tesco, more shops, homes, new fire station, town square and reconfigured Luxford Field – these are just a few of the ideas being considered for the redevelopment of land in the heart of Uckfield. Sites being looked at include Tesco and its car park, the fire station, allotments, Holy Cross School field, land to the north of the school, the Luxford Field and car park, former adult learning centre and Civic Approach. There are proposals too to create a traffic solution which aims to halve delays for people in cars and buses and for enhancements to the High Street, from Bell Lane to Church Street, in a bid to give the whole town shopping centre a boost. Developers St James’s Investments, who are working in partnership with Tesco on the proposals, stress they are only just beginning consultation on them. They have not yet been able to talk in any detail with the landowners and want to take into account views of townspeople before finalising plans. A public exhibition is being held in the Civic Centre on Friday, September 19, and Saturday, September 20, showing what could be done and then the developers hope to work with all interested parties to take the scheme further. Project leader Nick Tappin said: “We hope people will want to be involved in this exciting redevelopment scheme and visit our exhibition to learn more and tell us their views. We want to provide an improved town centre, in line with the vision recently created by the local authorities with input from local people. “What is most exciting about our proposals is that they are totally deliverable, financially and practically.” The proposals include moving Tesco forward on to its current car park and extending it westwards with parking beneath the store. New homes would be built in front of it overlooking Bell Lane and beside it along part of new link road.
Space created behind the store would allow for an extension to the Civic Centre, a town square, new shops and a mixture of residential accommodation. The Hub can either stay where it is or be re-housed in a brand new extension to the Civic Centre. Also behind the store, between it and the Luxford Field, would be a new link road accessed from a new roundabout in Bell Farm Road on land to the west of the fire station site. It would run north to another roundabout, south west of Holy Cross School, and turn eastwards accessing High Street via an upgraded Civic Approach. The whole of the link road would be two-way, designed to be an extension of the High Street, with pedestrian crossings and traffic speeds of about 25 mph. Luxford Field would be reconfigured, with a landscaped park area, multi-use sports and games areas and a new infants’ play park. Adjacent to it would be a new playing field for Holy Cross School where an allweather pitch could be provided for both the school and local community use. A new fire station could be built on what is currently allotment land. The allotments could be moved to a site north of the fire station but if another site is promoted that could be considered. The top end of the Luxford car park would be extended with the only access, in and out, being from Library Way. The Luxford Centre would remain untouched. There would also be a pedestrian street running from the Civic Centre and the town square, with new shops on both sides and Tesco on the other, all the way to Bell Lane where pedestrians could cross to visit shops in the Bell Lane Walk. Also tucked away on the Tesco site would be an energy centre with the potential to heat and power Holy Cross School, the Civic Centre, the fire station and the sports pitches. There could also be solar panels, natural ventilation and a rainwater harvesting system.

Kent Police takes delivery of its smartest ever police car Kent Police’s neighbourhood team in the rural area of Canterbury will certainly be able to out smart potential troublemakers thanks to their latest recruit. Smart of Maidstone, based in Bircholt Road, Parkwood has recently supplied the team with an eye-catching fortwo 71hp model that will be ideal for community support officers visiting remote areas. Commenting on the new partnership, Ch Supt John Molloy, Area Commander for East Kent, said: “We are working to develop our neighbourhood teams and the valuable role the officers and community support officers have in the community. This small vehicle is ideally suited to the lanes and limited parking areas that we have in our rural communities. “We are always looking at ways to improve the way we work and the environmental benefits of the car are a big bonus.” Richard Wheeler, After Sales Director for smart of Maidstone and the smart of Tonbridge After Sales operation, is delighted that the innovative fortwo passion coupé will not only be helping to reduce crime but also Kent Police’s running costs. “This is the first time we have ever had a local partnership and following Kent Police’s initial approach we are delighted to supply a car that will help everyone in the community and also be extremely environmentally-compatible,” explained Richard.
“With its striking design, liveried exterior and compact dimensions the smart has a great presence and it is exceptionally manoeuvrable too, making it ideal for policing both rural and built-up areas.” Richard continued: “The car’s amazing fuel economy, up to 70.6mpg on the extra-urban fuel cycle, and low emissions of just 112g/km mean that Kent Police will also be able to keep it on the road for longer periods with little effect on the environment, allowing them to maximise the excellent service that they provide to people in Canterbury and the surrounding area.”
Local Partnership puts Young Race Ace on the Winning Track TFC Europe Ltd, which is one of Europe's leading suppliers of technical fasteners based in Heathfield, East Sussex have recently entered the world of Championship motor racing with its sponsorship of rising Genetta G20 star, Kieran Vernon. Kieran who is from Pulborough, West Sussex, has already carved an impressive racing career, at the age of just 19 years old he is currently 2nd place in the senior Genetta G20 racing championship competing against drivers who have been racing for many years. His impressive driving skills have seen him leading the pack and winning five outings in the TFC branded Ginetta G20. Kieran relishes the opportunity of getting behind the wheel for the remainder of the season in what is sure to be an exciting climax. “This has been an excellent season so far, with many races neck and neck to the line. TFC’s support has been a fantastic boost for our team.” Vernon who has already won two British karting championships in 2006 and 2007 was a natural choice for TFC Europe Ltd to sponsor. The move into racing cars for Kieran has been an extension of his ability to seemingly drive any type of vehicle and follows a runner-up position in the G20 Junior series last year. “Kieran has the same abilities that TFC recognise within our own company. He has a drive and willingness to succeed backed with a professional determination that puts him ahead of the field.” Brian Goode, Technical Director at TFC commented. “When we were looking for a young person to invest in, who was locally based and a natural winner; Kieran immediately sprang to mind. We are sure that our partnership will make a winning combination that brings together the 24
strengths of TFC with the skill and ability of Kieran to produce a winning team.”

Sussex firm secures ‘Victory’ Uckfield-based geotechnical and structural monitoring experts, ITMSoil Ltd, has been awarded an important contract to monitor HMS Victory as the historic ship undergoes substantial repairs in her Portsmouth dry dock home. The company, which specialises in the manufacture and installation of equipment to measure movements of ground and structures during construction projects, has been awarded the job by the Building Research Establishment, which in turn has been commissioned by the Ministry of Defence – the Royal Navy. HMS Victory, which was Admiral Lord Nelson’s flagship in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, is also historically important as the only surviving naval warship built by British shipbuilders in the mid 18th century. Still a commissioned vessel with a Captain and crew, she sits in dry dock in Portsmouth. As the ship was built to remain permanently in water, her timbers have gradually reacted to air and much of the hull needs to be restored. ITM-Soil Ltd’s specialist instrumentation will monitor the progress and mechanics of the vertical settlement of the ship and the lateral spreading of the hull during restoration and later on a permanent basis. Director Jonathan Scott said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract as HMS Victory is a vital part of our country’s naval history. It will be an honour to assist in the preservation of this important and beautiful ship.” The ship will remain open to visitors as usual during the restoration.
New funding for Punnett's Town Village Hall Plans for a brand new village hall in Punnett's Town have received a further boost through a £15,000 Community Grant from Wealden District Council. This follows on from the £410,200 Big Lottery Grant the village hall received in August. Work to replace the existing village hall, which was previously an old fire station, is expected to begin next February. Residents of Punnett's Town and Three Cups Corner have already raised £40,000 and the project has been further boosted through a £10,000 grant form the Garfield Weston Foundation. But there is still another £80,000 to be raised to meet the full cost of new village hall whose innovative design will take the form of a traditional Sussex barn. "We have seven groups a week using the existing village hall which was built before the war," said Maggie Lambert-Gorwyn, the hall's organising secretary. "But we have many more enquiries about using the facilities which at the moment we can't meet. The hall also doubles up as a sports changing room and its lack of suitable facilities is holding back the local football team's promotion hopes. The new village hall will have a proper kitchen and meeting rooms." "The new village hall at Punnett's Town will play an important part in promoting health and well being in one of Wealden's communities. It will also increase the number of activities for young people in this rural area and Wealden is pleased to be able to support it financially through the Community Grant," said Councillor Ron Cussons, Cabinet member for Community. "It is great to see local Wealden groups getting such valuable help from the Big Lottery Fund and for the Council to be instrumental in the process" In February the Diplocks Community Centre project in Hailsham
received £391,738 from the Big Lottery Fund. Together with Punnett's Town village hall and contributions made through the Awards for All and Breathing Space schemes, community groups in Wealden will have benefited from £950,000 of Big Lottery funding so far this year. Wealden's Community Grants Officer is available to help local organisation to identify possible sources of funding for their community projects . She can be contacted on 01323 443520. 25

Born in 1951, Graham Rye was given a Kodak Box Brownie by his Dad when he was just old enough to hold a camera without dropping it, and from that day forward was rarely without some kind of camera at his side. He left his Secondary Modern school in 1968 with no qualifications other than one ‘O’ Level in art; being able to sprint faster than anyone else in the school; and also exercising great skill at dodging the blackboard rubber. Starting work as a messenger boy in a West End Advertising Art Studio his learning curve was lengthy and wide, but there’s no substitute for experience. This he gained in spades while absorbing everything he could from working around and with the many talented artists, designers, photographers, and art directors with whom he came into contact on a daily basis before he eventually left the West End of London in 1976 to take his first shot as a freelance photographer and designer. By the early 1980s, he was regularly shooting portraits of personalities like Sir John Mills, Pat Phoenix, Mary O’Hara, Dame Beryl Grey, Keith Michell, Anthony Sher, Andrée Melly and many others in the arts and entertainment industry. During the mid-1980s his career took a different turn when his life-long interest in Ian Fleming’s James Bond character became yet another string to his professional bow. For over two decades he edited and designed 007 MAGAZINE, a glossy 48-page publication, which became ‘the bible’ for Bond fans around the world, and whose early issues are still much sought-after collectables. The paper magazine ceased publication in December 2006, but was reborn in this electronic age as 007 MAGAZINE OnLine in August 2007, and is the world’s foremost James Bond resource. Rye also manages and maintains The 007 MAGAZINE Archive, which houses the world’s largest collection of images relating to the James Bond phenomenon available to the media. He is soon also to launch ‘MovieQuest’, a new film image archive which will also supply images for a multitude of publications around the world.
26
Graham Rye is also the author and designer of the book ‘The James Bond Girls’, which was successfully reprinted throughout a decade, being first published in 1989, and which was picture sourced from his own 007 MAGAZINE Archive. He has also appeared on many TV & Radio programmes and in print as The expert authority on the world of James Bond. Realising a life-long ambition to live in Kent in an old property near the sea, and thanks to his late father’s legacy, Graham Rye moved to Lydd in March 2008. Inspired by the natural beauty of the area, he has once again rediscovered his first love - photography, and with it, the countless artistic and entertaining variants that can be achieved through photo-manipulation. If you would like to contact Graham Rye you can call him on 01797 322 007, or visit his website at www.007magazine.co.uk. See Grahams exhibition at the George, Lydd.

Radical art at the De La Warr Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) was one of the most radical British artists of the twentieth century and has long been recognized as one of the leading exponents of the modern movement in Britain between the wars. Most famous for his abstract paintings and reliefs of the 1930s, Nicholson began his career as a figurative painter and developed a deep and enduring relationship with the English landscape. Focusing on his career from 1920's to 1958, the exhibition reconsiders his position in British art history, puts his abstract work in context and offers a new understanding of the modern in art.
A Continuous Line concentrates on three lesser-known periods and groups of works: landscapes made in Cumberland and Cornwall in the late 1920s; landscapes, abstract paintings and reliefs made alongside each other in St. Ives during the World War II; and the Cubist still-lifes made between 1945 – 58 works that secured Nicholson's international reputation. The selection of over 70 key works included in the exhibition demonstrate his continuity of vision and approach and reveal a view of Ben Nicholson quite different from the established one. This will be the only chance to see this exhibition in the south east region. For information and bookings please call 01424 229111 or visit www.dlwp.com, Free to Rother Residents. 28

It’s over twelve months now since Darcey Bussell announced her retirement from the ballet stage. Charles Willmott was fortunate enough to be invited to the dress rehearsals of her final performances at Sadlers Wells, enabling him to create a body of work in sympathy with this moment of ballet history. This is not the first time he has had the privilege of working with Darcey, this took place at London’s Royal Opera House Covent Garden within the magnificent rehearsal studios during September 2000. The work is now complete and ‘I have, perhaps not surprisingly, immensely enjoyed making this collection. …I don’t believe Darcey is capable of making an ugly move, she is always supremely elegant and perfectly poised for the roles, whether performing with her long time partner Jonathan Cope in Christopher Wheeldon’s semi abstract, postapocalyptic themed ballet Tryst, or Kenneth MacMillan’s classic tale of Winter Dreams’ Charles Willmott. The collection simply entitled Darcey Bussell Farewell includes studies in graphite and oil, oil on paper works and oil on canvas paintings. It numbers some thirty pieces in total, covering the above final performances and just a few works from Darcey’s swansong from the Royal Opera House featuring MacMillan’s Song of the Earth. Darcey has now emigrated to Australia, amongst other things, to become an ‘eco-mum’ and although she will be commuting back to the UK for more Viva la Diva shows with Katherine Jenkins it is unlikely that many paintings of her will be available in her former ballet roles. I’m delighted to announce the first public exhibition will be of selected original work from the collection at the prestigious Fairfax Gallery, 23 The Pantiles in Royal Tunbridge Wells from 18th October – 7th November 2008. You can contact the Tunbridge Wells gallery on 01892 525525.

Dirty Footprints Theatre Company Presents Shakespeare Workshops Following the success of the Shakespeare Workshops in July, Dirty Footprints Theatre Company is proud to announce another set of workshops that will run in October. As before, the workshops are aimed to give everyone a clearer understanding of a Shakespearean text whilst enjoying the beauty of the literature and discovering a character to play with. A selection of short scenes from The First Folio will be available for students to choose from. There is no need to learn the dialogue by heart and there is no open performance at the end, just the pleasure to present your scene to your fellow students and to make yourself more familiar with the great Bard’s works. There is nothing old and passé about Shakespeare; his stories, characters and emotions are as relevant and poignant today as they were when he was writing them. The workshops will provide students with the opportunity to progress their understanding of Shakespeare and develop their thoughts on the First Folio texts, as well as adapt their own personalities into their chosen character. With the tuition and advice provided by Libby and Liliane of Dirty Footprints Theatre Company, students will grow into their characters with ease. Here some comments from the July Shakespeare Workshops: “I learnt such a lot and now feel more confident about approaching Shakespeare. In fact when I was on the stage I really felt like Juliet and Lady Macbeth, and was on a high going home, as if I'd done a proper performance (which I suppose it was really!). The only thing now is that having become more comfortable with the dialogue I want to do it all over again so I can concentrate more on my acting!!” – Trixie into the characters we chose.” – Sue & Charles “Thank you both so much for the wonderful insight you have given me into the real meaning of Shakespeare's plays and what it feels like to act in them. You brought out all the different nuances of emotion expressed in the language, and in a short time managed to give me a pretty good idea of how to express these emotions in speech and action.” – Valerie “Just thought we would let you know that we thought the Shakespeare Workshop was great!! Due to your excellent directing, we really got
Gizmo The Human Lamb Gizmo the lamb who lives at the Museum of Kent Life is a firm favorite with guest’s visiting the attraction. Born in March 2007 Gizmo will shortly be celebrating her first birthday this year, but unlike most other lambs, Gizmo will be celebrating her birthday with our Livestock Officer, Amanda Clements who is Gizmos surrogate mother. Gizmo is one of three lambs but unfortunately her mother didn’t have enough milk to feed all three so the Museum had to bottle-feed her. Gizmo would rather spend her time with humans and follows Amanda everywhere, she has even learnt how to open the farmyard gate, by lifting the chain over the post. Gizmo is the friendliest sheep in the county and will be roaming around the site and will be helping staff to welcome the Museums first Southdown sheep arrive with her newly born lamb.

The workshops are limited to 10 people per day so make sure you book your place as soon as possible so as not to avoid disappointment. The workshops will start with a short warm-up before the class is divided into 2 teams (with one tutor each) to enable maximum working time per text. Learning materials are included in the price and will be provided before the first workshop.

Aga Launches Local Life Iconic British cooker inspires Britons to support their local food producers Aga Rangemaster, maker of the famous cooker, today launches a UK wide campaign to help raise awareness of the benefits of buying and eating locally produced food and drink. Aga’s Local Life campaign runs for the whole of September and includes events in 50 Aga shops across the country, joining up the best of British regional food with the world’s most loved cooker. To kick off the month-long campaign, Aga Rangemaster CEO William McGrath today attended the Adlington event, and picked up some lamb cookery tips from Andrew Neill, coowner of Grundy & Neill Organic Butcher and Delicatessen. From master bakers and sausage makers - to duck and farm shops, and honey makers, Aga has partnered with some of the best UK local food producers, inviting each into the local Aga shop to showcase their produce and hold interactive events. The programme of events varies from store to store, but includes activities such as master classes by local producers, Aga cooking demonstrations using local product, farmers’ markets, and a myriad of other events. Local Life will celebrate our local food heroes, showcase the finest produce, and inspire nearby residents to share in the growing passion for fresh local ingredients. Events are open to the public and food tastings will be a central element, with recipes specially designed for each event using local produce. Aga wants to give local food producers a platform to talk about the efforts to which they go to ensure the very highest standards in their produce. For the Aga shop teams, Local Life offers a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate how the best local ingredients taste even better when prepared using the cast iron radiant heat of the world’s best cooker. A special booklet containing recipes,
38
tips and pictures along with a directory of all producers will be published in early October. John Dabb, Head of UK Marketing for Aga, said: “Supporting local food producers has never been more relevant and Aga believes passionately in the importance of local food and the role of the artisan producer. For Local Life, we have been fortunate enough to work with some of the country’s finest food producers and we want people to understand the benefits of eating locally produced food: improved diet, understanding food provenance, reduced travel miles and packaging, and stimulating the local economy.” Supporting local producers is something that Aga has been committed to for over six decades. In 1949, four years after the end of the Second World War, Britain resolved that it would never again be at the mercy of naval blockades and farming moved to the forefront of the national agenda. It was then that Aga embarked on a mission to communicate the importance of supporting local food producers to the British public and worked with a team of photographers to create Farming Families, a booklet that served as a revealing portrait of changing rural British life. Sixty years on, in a rapidly changing world, the importance of nurturing local life remains as relevant to Aga and the public as ever. Those interested finding out more about Local Life events are invited to visit the Local Life website http://www.aga-web.co.uk/locallife or contact a local Aga shop. FOOD & DRINK
A matter of taste By Cindy-Lou Dale Selecting French wine in a Calais hypermarket is daunting and the scrum of booze-cruisers further off-putting. I’ll let you in on a little known secret alternative that will turn your day trip and wine acquisition into an enjoyable, easy and rewarding experience. Fifteen minutes drive south of Calais, on the country road to St Omer, is the ancient French village of Ardres. Here, in its heart, just off the quiet cobbled market square, beside the church, is Boursot’s Wine Collection. Guy Boursot (Brit), an affable and revered authority in the world of wine, whose family have been in the industry for centuries, will guide you through his personal selection of wines (starting at around £2 per bottle) sourced from family vineyards from around France. Boursot’s also offers vineyard tour. After you’ve tasted and selected your wines and before returning to the ferry port you’ll have enough time left to relax in one of Ardres street cafés; or you could explore a little further and discover the secret France is trying to keep for itself. A short drive from Ardres, in the picturesque farming community of Tardinghen is Christophe Noyon’s Brasseur – a specialist brewery located on Ferme de Belle Dalle farm. Noyon, a genial fellow who speaks English confidently, undertook studies in recent years and learnt the art of brewing from the world’s best beer makers in Belgium. He returned to France and launched Christophe Noyon Brasseur where he brews arguably the best beer you’ll ever savour. A guided tour of the facility plus a beer and cheese tasting is also available. So if you are planning a special event or party, it makes sense to hop across the channel on a cheap day return and visit Boursot’s Wine and Noyon’s Brasserie. SeaFrance operates 15 daily return tourism crossings on the DoverCalais route. Online fares for a car and up to five passengers include all fuel charges and start from just £25 each way and from £25 return for a day trip. For more details or to book call 0871-2222500 or visit www.seafrance.com.

LOCAL HISTORY
Anne Of Cleves House By Roger Paine An amusing jingle is often used to help schoolchildren remember the order in which Henry VIII’s six wives met their fate: “Divorced, beheaded, died, Divorced, beheaded, survived” Anne of Cleves was his fourth wife, divorced in the same year that they married. After Jane Seymour, wife number three who died in 1537, the King spent three years searching for a new spouse. When he married Anne of Cleves on 6th January 1540, he was a forty-eight year old widower with three children, whilst she was the shy daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cleves from Guelderland, Germany, half his age and spoke no English. Henry’s desire for Anne had been inspired by her portrait (now in the Paris Louvre), painted by Holbein and delivered to the King in London. This was the method by which royalty introduced themselves and is little different from today’s dating agencies requiring those who register to provide a recent colour photograph. Anne spent her first night in England at St Augustine’s in Canterbury in rooms which are now part of The King’s School, and although it is believed that Henry never actually “swore they had brought over a Flanders mare to him” – this story appeared at the end of the seventeenth century - it sums up the cultural gap which existed between the courts in England and Europe at the time. The match was spectacularly unsuccessful and although the official grounds for divorce were non-consummation of the marriage it was clear that despite a contemporary description of Anne as “of middling beauty, with a determined and resolute countenance”, Henry had made up his mind that he had no interest in her within minutes of their meeting. To this day, historians have never managed to fully explain why the couple married at all.
During the next 350 years, Anne of Cleves House changed hands countless times and the accommodation was altered to provide three separate units. For most of the time the property was occupied by tenants, much as it was in Anne’s own lifetime. It had been owned by Lewes Priory up until the Dissolution of the Monasteries and was known as The Porch House until the early twentieth century. In 1923 it was given to the Sussex Archaeological Society, now known as Sussex Past. The building is a remarkable example of medieval and late Elizabethan craftsmanship. The Southover High Street frontage has been described as bearing “the genuine stamp of that delightful type of late medieval house, which England used to possess in abundance”. The oldest part, probably dating from the fifteenth century, is timber-framed of the traditional Wealden type, with the early crown post roof still visible. Traditional local building materials are much in evidence, from the Sussex oak of the frame to the walls of flint, chalk, stone and brick, and the roof of Horsham slabs or tiles. On the first floor is a magnificent room known as the upper bedroom. The room was restored in 1927 and many of the timbers replaced but the original lath and plaster walling can still be seen. Behind one of the brick chimney flues is a clothes airing box and behind the tester bed, a sixteenth century Flemish-carved four poster with roof-like canopy, is the tapestry room where there are fragments of seventeenth century wall hangings, forerunners of today’s patterned wallpaper. Throughout the house there is an abundance of exposed timber beams, white plastered walls, and carved oak and mahogany furniture which help to preserve the atmosphere of a substantial dwelling house. Several rooms also display local artefacts, including those connected with the Sussex iron industry, to create an historical insight into Lewes and the surrounding areas.
On 13th July 1540, parliament approved that the marriage was void and Anne of Cleves was formally removed from her position as Queen of England. A role she had fulfilled for just six months and a few days. For all his faults, Henry had always shown himself capable of being generous, and he was to “the daughter of Cleves” who received a handsome settlement of manors and estates “in diverse counties”. One of these was the building now known as Anne of Cleves House in Lewes, East Sussex. It is doubtful, however, that she ever stayed at the house or even visited it at any time in her life. After her death in 1557 the house once again became Crown property until it was sold three years later.
The kitchen presents a typical scene of the medieval era and contains a table made from Sussex marble which was once in South Malling where, according to legend, the murderers of Thomas à Becket stayed on their flight from Canterbury cathedral, and on which they laid their bloodstained weapons. But the table began shaking under this sacrilegious burden and hurled their swords to the floor. Anne of Cleves House, together with a delightful small garden at the rear, has retained much of its original identity. As the timbers creak beneath your footsteps and the small mullioned windows reflect the sunlight in lattice patterns across the floor, you can dress up in one of the Tudor costumes thoughtfully provided by Sussex Past to help visitors absorb the building’s ambience. Close your eyes for a moment and you will be re-living history. 45

LOCAL CHURCHES
The parish church of St Michael and All Angels in the village of Withyham, between Groombridge and Hartfield north of Crowborough, is on top of a small hill overlooking a lake and the rolling pastures of Buckhurst Park. Withyham was placed under the patronage of St Michael shortly after the Norman Conquest although the first recorded mention of a church was not until in 1291 when Edward I required monies to be paid to the Pope to help fund a crusade. Withyham’s contribution was valued at 45 marks, about £30. At the outbreak of war with France in 1324, Edward II sequestered all property belonging to foreign religious orders. This included Withyham which was then attached to a Benedictine Priory at Morteyn in France. A list of Rectors and Patrons of St Michael’s stretching back to 1328 is displayed in the church. During re-building of the church in the 14th century, the Sackville Chapel at the east end of the north aisle was added. The connection with the Sackville family goes back over 800 years. Jordan, grandson of Herbrand de Sauqueville, who took his name from the village of Sauqueville near Dieppe, married an heiress, Ela Dene, whose land in Sussex included the manor of Buckhurst in Withyham. Centuries later Lady Elizabeth Sackville, daughter of the 3rd Duke of Dorset, married George West, 5th Earl De La Warr, another Sussex family of great antiquity and prestige. Today, William, 11th Earl De La Warr, is Patron of St Michael’s. He and his wife Anne, Countess De La Warr, live in nearby Buckhurst House and regularly worship in the church.
made from fragments of medieval glass which survived the fire. The impressive east window above the altar was put in during the early nineteenth century and consists of ten panels which relate the story of the New Testament. Four paintings depicting the Passion of Christ, understood to be by Niccolo Di Pietro Gerini, the Florentine painter, were donated to the church in 1849. Now, because of their value, only facsimiles are displayed. The originals can be seen at Leeds Castle in Kent. The arch over the nave is dominated by a mural of The Last Judgement painted by Reverend The Hon Reginald Sackville-West, later to become 7th Earl De La Warr, when he was Rector from 1841 to 1865. The Sackville Chapel, with a vault beneath and enclosed by seventeenth century iron railings, contains many memorials to the Sackville and De La Warr families. An amorial stained-glass window illuminates the east wall. With funeral hatchments and ancient banners the chapel could be the setting for one of Shakespeare’s great English-monarch plays. The altar tomb, the work of Danish sculptor Caius Cibber, is that of young Thomas Sackville. At the side kneel marble life-size figures of his grief-stricken parents, the 5th Earl and Countess of Dorset. The poignant inscription includes, “Here Lyes The Thirteeneth Child And Seventh Son, Who Died In His Thirteenth Yeare His Race Had Run”. Other memorials record that Gilbert, 8th Earl De La Warr, was killed in action in World War I, and Flying Officer Thomas Henry Jordan Sackville, 2nd son of the 9th Earl De La Warr, died in air operations during World War II, six months before his 21st birthday.
In 1663 a thunderbolt struck the church spire, melting the bells in the belfry and almost destroying the entire building by fire. The only parts of the original church remaining are the north wall, south chancel wall, and the lower part of the tower. Rebuilding work was not completed for almost ten years. A sundial above the porch of the south door with the initials ‘IB’, Isaac Burgess, Rector at the time and the date 1672, commemorates the re-opening of the church. The opportunity was also taken to enlarge the Sackville Chapel which fills the north east corner of the church. The chapel is still privately owned by the Sackville family and does not come under the jurisdiction of the Bishop. The bells were also recast, and again in 1908 when a further two were added. These provide today’s magnificent eight-bell peal.
The Rector (now the Priest-in-Charge) of St Michael’s is Reverend Adrian Leak, who formerly held positions as Archivist at York Minster, and Precentor at Guildford Cathedral. Living in the adjacent eighteenth century rectory he oversees a vibrant church community in Withyham and the surrounding area.

In the churchyard, outside the south entrance, is a rosemary bush. Rosemary, the traditional symbol of remembrance, re-affirms it is better to embrace the future rather than the past. Pluck a sprig as you enter the church for a wedding or a funeral. The weight of history is inescapable at St Michael and All Angels but this timelessness also generates a feeling of enlightenment.

EDUCATION
Claremont Preparatory & Nursery School At the start of this new academic year, Claremont welcomed over 400 children to Claremont Preparatory and Nursery School. It is a very special place where children thrive and quickly develop into caring, self-confident individuals. Over the last 15 years Claremont has gone from strength to strength, and continues to develop each year. In addition to offering a broad academic curriculum, the School boasts excellent facilities for music, drama, art, French and sport. The ongoing investment programme has resulted in the recent installation of interactive whiteboards throughout the school, a floodlit Astroturf, a theatre, cricket pavilion and a wooden play area. Major refurbishment projects have delivered improved language facilities, an upgraded IT suite, and a range of bright, wellequipped and inviting classrooms. The School also has beautiful grounds of over 100 acres and its own study centre on Northern France. Claremont caters for boys and girls aged one to thirteen and is open 8am to 6pm daily. There is dual form entry and a maximum of 18 pupils per class. It promotes traditional family values and therefore offers neither boarding nor Saturday school. A daily transport service operates across an extensive local area, including Cranbrook, Hawkhurst and Bodiam. The Nursery School operates 50 weeks per year. All children follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum, and preparation for the transition to the Prep School starts in the Spring Term. All pupils sit Common Entrance Exams in Year 8 and are carefully prepared for their next school. Many children leave Claremont with scholarships to good Public Schools and each year several pupils move on to Cranbrook School in Kent. Claremont fees are very competitive and make independent education an affordable option.

Silentnight Makes Bedtime Fun For Kids Silentnight has made bedtime easier for parents and fun for kids, creating a bed that children can’t wait to jump in to. Young princesses, aspiring footballers, special fairies and even young astronauts can enjoy going to sleep on their first bed with unique headboards and feet on the lowered single divan. The four fantastical headboards also include hidden pockets to store away special toys needed for extra bedtime comfort. Featuring Silentnight’s trusted unique Miracoil® Spring system, parents can be reassured that the mattress supports their child’s growing supple back. Friends can also join in on the adventures through the fun sleepover model, which transforms two beds in one, with a hidden mattress tucked away in the divan. As an additional feature a knitted natural aloe vera cover with therapeutic soothing properties accompanies the mattress. The cover is also anti-bacterial and anti-dust mite, perfect for young children.
Prices start from £629 and by visiting www.silentnight.co.uk you can use our Bedroom Floor Planner to ensure the ‘My First Bed’ fits perfectly in your bedroom.
Sleep Easier – Ditch The Dust Mites Anyone horrified by The One Show’s recent report on dust mites and the negative effects they can have on sleep and wellbeing (Wednesdy 24 September) will be relieved to know that a simple solution is now at hand. New from Ewbank is the Raycop, a hand held device that launches a triple action attack to help eradicate dust mites from beds, mattresses, cots, duvets and pillows. The world’s first anti-bacterial vacuum, it also kills 99.9% of bacteria, including MRSA and E.Coli. Boasting millions of dust mites and their accumulated faeces, rather than being an aid to a good night’s sleep, the average Brit’s bed is the root of many restless nights, plus the cause of symptoms such as red, itchy eyes, runny noses and difficulty breathing. Want to sleep easier without the huge expense of getting the professionals in? Then the Raycop, available at Lakeland, John Lewis and other good retailers for £149.99, is the perfect answer. Awarded Allergy UK’s coveted British Allergy Foundation Seal of Approval, it is scientifically proven to remove those nasties that might disturb your sleep. This clever machine starts with a UVC sterilising lamp; a vibrating pad that agitates the surface, releasing the dust mites that are hooked within it; and finally a vacuum with a two stage Micro Allergy Filtration system that efficiently removes the dust mites and their faeces and prevents the allergens being released back into the atmosphere. Quick and easy to use - on old mattresses - it is recommended that the Raycop is used daily for the first week, before reverting to a once a month treatment to keep the dust mites at bay. In addition, sufferers may also benefit from trying the following:1) Regularly wash bedding at 60°C so that any mites living within the sheets will be killed. 2) Do not make your bed as soon as you get up in the morning – allow it to air a little first.
3) Dust mites love warm, humid conditions, so regular open your bedroom windows to allow fresh air to circulate. 4) Change your pillows frequently. For more information on Raycop, visit www.raycop.co.uk.

The garage goes up-market ‘Home improvement’ has become a national obsession, but as it becomes increasingly difficult to make money from property, homeowners need to consider the real value of the work they do, before they start knocking down walls. As unlikely as it sounds, garages are the new kitchens. And why not? In this foodie age, many think it’s acceptable to spend tens of thousands of pounds on a hand-built kitchen - only for the interiors magazines to deem their designer units obsolete within the lifespan of a j-cloth. Oakframe garages from English Heritage Buildings on the other hand, are light-filled timeless structures which combine beautifully with period properties or add instant character to modern houses. As testament to this, many garages from English Heritage Buildings are built to designs that can be traced back to 16th century cart sheds. These stunning, bespoke buildings are far removed from the suburban asbestos monstrosities with up-and-over doors which, although popular in the 1970s, are less likely to be replicated in another 500 years. Besides adding immense curb appeal, bespoke garages from English Heritage Buildings can provide useful additional living space or even an upper floor for a studio or annex. The design options are almost limitless; would sir like a games room above, solid oak beams and antique tiles? According to estate agents, a garage is the part of a house that adds most value. A survey to assess the impact of home renovation projects on house prices and saleability conducted by Spicerhaart, (the independent network of estate agents) concluded that extra space results
64
in extra cash and that parking and garage space are buyers’ top requests. "A good garage can add hundreds of thousands of pounds to a house's value" says Will Peppitt, a director of estate agent, Savills. "The potential for secondary accommodation can make all the difference, particularly if mother-in-law is putting up some of the purchase money." The reasons for the increasing demand for garages are simple: increasing levels of car crime and lack of parking spaces. Being able to secure your car in a garage gives peace of mind, lowers car and contents insurance, and boosts the value of your home. In addition it may simply not be possible to park in the street. Congestion charging may have reduced city centre traffic but drivers often park in suburbs, which can exacerbate the problem. As a result, garage space is at a premium. Garages in central London add £60,000 - £100,000 to a flat or house price, with many owners now opting to sell them separately. While kitchen units house cutlery and bottles of ketchup, garages care for our most valuable possessions. Investing in a hard roof for the soft top makes sense, too often thousands of pounds' worth of precious metal is left rusting in the road.

Style Ideas For Sliding Panels If you have a yen for a simple uncluttered feel to your home then look to the Far East for inspiration. Unlike many european homes which tend to be crammed with furniture, cushions and general knicknacks, a Japanese room will look almost empty by comparison. Clean lines and minimal furnishings create a tranquil, harmonious feel - a perfect antidote to our busy lives. Sliding panels originated in Japan more than 500 years ago as a way to partition rooms but they've now become a contemporary way to maximise light, retain privacy at large windows or patio doors or even create distinct zones in a large living space. Sliding panels at a patio door size 2m x 2m start at ÂŁ282 measured, made and fitted. For more information please call Hillarys on 0800 916 6516 for more information or click www.hillarys.co.uk

Designer Cushions Hold the Key to Interior Makeovers The recent economic climate has had a dramatic effect on our spending in home furnishings. Large items such as sofas and chairs have seen a particularly sharp drop in sales and instead of buying new, the creative home owner has discovered that great looking designer cushions provide the perfect low cost answer to transforming their living space. One specialist online company, OoaKI (www.ooaki.co.uk), offers one of the most inspired ranges of handmade designer cushions in the UK and has recently extended its range to include a choice of designs across 12 colours. OoaKI is short for 'One of a Kind Interiors' and its latest collection of designer cushions clearly demonstrates the company's desire to offer individual and beautifully designed cushions in pretty much every major colour. With a vast range of designs suitable for contemporary, traditional and classic settings the cushions bring style and colour to any room or interior. The company was set up a year ago by Sunita Sur. The idea came to her after experiencing difficulty finding cushions for her own interior. Being particular in what she wanted she set out to find cushions that were well designed, made with high quality fabric and a good infill, correctly fitting covers and in a range of colours. After surfing the internet and visiting dozens of shops Sunita was astonished how little was available that met this criteria. Being creative and having a keen eye for design and colour she decided to launch Ooaki. Now one year later the company is offering not only some of the best designed cushions on the market but importantly the best hand-crafted ones too.
"We do not simply consider a cushion to be a decorative piece but to also serve its purpose of comfort. We therefore use the finest fabrics of luxurious quality and ensure that each cushion is voluminous to keep its individual and elegant shape. The couture cut combined with the careful concealment of the fastening creates a fashionable piece at any angle" says Sunita. All OoaKI cushions are hand sewn and made in the UK. Over the past year Sunita and her team have gone to considerable lengths to source the very highest quality of fabrics. OoaKI does not use prints, and therefore all variations in colour are sewn which creates a distinctive three dimensional design. Cushions allow us to add our own individuality to a room. They can add that understated elegance or provide an opulent style and touch of decadence. The OoaKI collection offers something for every style of interior and with the majority of designs starting at just ÂŁ25 transforming your interior in these cost conscious times certainly will not break the bank. To find out more about the OoaKI range of hand made designer cushions, to view or to order online simply visit www.ooaki.co.uk

Make the right choice for your High Definition television! By Ian Isted High Definition or “HD” screens have finally made it. People buying new televisions are going for HD over the old standard quality. That’s all very well but when alot of us are still using standard DVD players and everyday Sky packages what’s the point? There is no difference in the quality of the picture (unless you had an old black and white. We know you’re out there!). This is where those new players you may have heard of come in. Bluray and HD-DVD provide the HD quality that we crave so much. Note that HD screens will work with any type of disc player, Blu-ray, HDDVD, and of course DVD. The problem is that Blu-ray discs do not play on HD-DVD players and vice-versa. A big debate has been taking place for the last few years about which player to choose, there are advantages and disadvantages to both it seems, but the debate is finally at an end.
Blu-ray players have dramatically dropped in price over the last few years and now you can buy a player for about £180. The discs have also come down in price and you can pick these up for around £18. This is of course more expensive than DVD but paying that extra to experience your favourite movie in the crispest, smoothest quality available is more than worth it. Where does this leave those of us that have large DVD collections? You will be pleased to know that the DVD collection you have been building up for the last 10 years is still going to work, you can play them on your Blu-ray player straight out of the box. I wonder if next we will have our entire living rooms transformed into the film and be immersed entirely in them ourselves. Roll on Lawnmower Man.
Though HD-DVD players are still available and you can still buy HDDVD’s in your local Zavvi or from Amazon they appear to be the format that will no longer be supported by most film companies. If you are going to buy a new player it seems Blu-ray is the choice you should make. Blu-ray allows for a far greater amount of data, in this case that means more video per disc, significantly more extra features and of course far better video quality. So you can enjoy your new television in all its glory.

GARDENS
Hole Park Gardens, in Rolvenden in the heart of typical Kentish countryside is particularly well-known for its English bluebells, but late summer takes on an exotic air when the tropical border comes into its own. Planted two years ago, the border benefits from full sun against a south facing old brick wall. Because the exotic plants need plenty of sunshine, their flowering season tends to be in late summer and early autumn. Plants in the long border include colourful cannas, striking daturas (angel’s trumpets), unusual Solanum laciniatum (kangaroo apple), Hedychium gardnarianum (a tropical ginger), impressive Japanese bananas, and the bright, winding ipomonea (morning glory). The border is not a static feature – new plants added last year included Impatiens tinctoria, a hardy large, busy lizzie which grows to over 1m high and flowers 10cm wide; Salvia involucrata ‘Bethellii’ whose strong pink flowers will complement the vivid dark blue of Salvia guarantica already

growing; Tetrapanax papyrifer ’Rex’ – the rice paper plant – with huge 1m palmate leaves covered in ‘felt’; and Hedychium yunnanense, an early flowering ginger. While new this year is the Sparmannia africana (house lime) with large hairy leaves and white flowers with colourful centres. Many tropical plants are notable for a particular feature, such as strong bright colours, huge leaves or flowers, strange shaped fruits, or a powerful scent. The exotic border at Hole Park has examples of all these and even sound, as wind rustles through some of the bamboos and grasses. Hole Park Gardens are open every Wednesday and Thursday until 31 October 2008, from 2pm to 6pm. There are extra open days in October – each Sunday (5th, 12th, 19th, 26th) to take full advantage of the exotic border and the stunning autumn colours in the rest of the garden. Head Garden Quentin Stark will be leading Gardener Tours on 5th, 12th and 19th October at 2.30pm. For more information on Hole Park, please visit www.holepark.com or call 01580 241344.

Audi races ahead with the GT3 R8 Ingolstadt – For the first time, Audi Sport will offer a racing sports car specifically developed for customer use in the form of the powerful 500 hp plus GT3 version of the Audi R8 which will be available from autumn 2009. The logistics and factory space required for the AUDI AG customer programme will be created over the next few months in Ingolstadt, Neckarsulm and Györ.
The customer cars are manufactured together by Audi Sport and the quattro GmbH, which is also responsible for production of the Audi R8 street version, and Audi Hungaria Motor Kft. (Györ).
"The R8 is the first production Audi bearing the name and genes of a successful racing sportscar and is therefore an excellent base from which to build up our first big customer sport programme," explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "Ever since the R8 was unveiled we’ve been inundated with enquiries about a race version. With the Audi R8 we will offer customers a racing sportscar equipped with high-calibre technology and the typical Audi qualities, but which is nevertheless easy to handle." The Audi R8 conforms to the production-based GT3 regulations allowing the car to be fielded in numerous national and international race series. Because the GT3 regulations prohibit the use of four-wheel drive the Audi R8 comes with the typical GT rear-wheel drive. The power is transmitted via a newly developed six-speed sequential sports gearbox. The suspension uses almost exclusively components from the production line. A comprehensive list of safety equipment guarantees the highest-level of passive safety. A modified front end and a large rear-wing generate the required downforce for the race track. The Audi R8, which bears the project name "R16" within Audi Sport, was developed under the direction of Audi Sport. Mid August, the first prototype successfully completed a roll-out in the hands of Audi factory driver Frank Biela. The first test races in various European racing series are scheduled for the 2009 season. Delivery to the customers is planned from the autumn of this coming year.

The Ultimate in Super Cars Shelby SuperCars introduces three changes to the Ultimate Aero for 2008. The 2008 Ultimate Aero will now utilize an engine block cast specifically for the Ultimate Aero. It will come standard with SSC designed custom HRE Monoblok wheels. Finally it will sport a state of the art Azentek computer infotainment system. After many months of development, and additional months of durability and efficiency testing SSC's new all aluminum engine block has proved itself a complete success. The new block utilizes an improved oiling system to handle the sustained high G-force cornering that the Ultimate Aero is capable of placing on the drive train. It produces the same power but with less stress on components while achieving an all round more efficient short-block package than the modified C5R block which was previously used. This is a tremendous breakthrough for SSC as the results of these design modifications produce even higher levels of durability and lower engine oil temperatures. This is also another milestone for SSC since it usually takes smaller, limited production companies like SSC significantly longer amounts of time to be able to cast their own block. HRE Wheels and SSC teamed up to design and produce a unique wheel to give the 2008 Ultimate Aero a fresh look while lowering the unsprung weight. The Monoblok Series by HRE Performance Wheels is a line of forged one-piece wheels crafted from 100 percent forged 6061T6 aluminum. With its innovative, elegant styling and impeccable craftsmanship, a custom Monoblok Series wheel has been successfully used to support Shelby SuperCars' Ultimate Aero. The Monoblok Series features direct bolt-in OE TPMS and utilizes OE center caps and lug hardware. HRE integrates engineering, design and manufacturing at its headquarters in Vista, California. 96
The Azentek Atlas system features a very long list of performance computing and entertainment capabilities including voice recognition, CANbus integration, Bluetooth, Satellite Radio, HD Radio, SSC Official Media Release www.ShelbySuperCars.com Page 2 of 2 CDRW/DVD/MP3/WMA, GPS navigation, built-in WIFI, 3G/GPRS internet connectivity and much more! "We are extremely pleased that Shelby Super Cars has chosen Azentek and the new AtlasT 2DIN computer infotainment system to be the standard head unit for the Ultimate Aero", said Derek Prentice, Azentek's National Sales Manager; "The high performance technology of the Atlas in the Ultimate Aero is a natural fit for the world's most powerful and fastest production car." The Azentek Atlas unit will not only provide SSC with state-of-the-art mobile technology it will enable SSC to remotely connect, communicate, and upgrade Ultimate Aeros as necessary.

The Lotus Evora Is Here With its stunning visual impact, exhilarating all-round dynamic performance, innovative chassis technology and high levels of luxury, packaging and convenience, the Evora heralds an exciting new era for Lotus. The first all-new Lotus since the iconic Elise made its debut in 1995, The Evora enters the sports car market as currently the world’s only mid-engined 2+2. Powered by a Lotus-tuned 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 280 PS, and weighing just 1350 kg (prototype specification), the Evora promises breathtaking performance. During preliminary testing around the famous Nürburgring, the Lotus chassis engineers report that it is extremely agile and great fun to drive - even when clad with the full development disguise that hid the beautiful lines from the prying motor-industry paparazzi. In addition to its excellent performance and exemplary handling, the Evora offers a more refined ownership experience than Lotus’s existing smaller four-cylinder models. Its elegantly styled cabin is elegantly trimmed and its equipment list includes contemporary features such as an advanced touch-screen multi-media system and electric power-fold door mirrors. Because one of the roles of the Evora is to attract new customers to the Lotus brand, much attention has been paid to its ease of use. Wider, taller door apertures and narrower sills make getting in and out of the cabin a less athletic undertaking than it is in Lotus’s smaller sports cars (the Elise, Exige, Europa and 2-Eleven), while the design of the cabin itself will accommodate two 99th percentile (6ft 5in tall) American males in the front seats. The ‘convenience factor’ of the Evora extends to less obvious areas of the car. For instance, beneath the skin the entire front-end structure is a high tech aluminium sacrificial modular unit, attached to the main extruded aluminium tub. This modular unit is designed to deform for maximum safety, and to reduce repair costs in the event of a frontal impact. The Evora has been designed with global automotive regulations in mind, and future derivatives are planed, these including amongst others, a convertible. The Evora will be hand crafted and built on a dedicated new assembly line within Lotus’s advanced manufacturing facility at 98
Hethel in the east of England; capacity limitations will restrict production to approximately 2000 cars a year, ensuring the dynamic new sports car’s rarity and exclusivity. Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc, has this to say about the exciting new model: “The Evora is the biggest milestone Lotus has achieved since the Elise was born 13 years ago and is part of our bold five year strategic plan, which includes the introduction of new cars and technologies to many more markets around the world. The Evora also represents Lotus core values of performance through light weight and efficiency and proves that you can have phenomenal performance, fuel efficiency elegant design and practicality all in a class leading midengine 2+2 sportscar, which will meet global safety and homologation standards” Mike Kimberley continues, “Looking to the future, we will continue to research, develop and produce lighter, more efficient vehicles which are linked to our extensive and well-regarded work on all aspects of future fuels, alternative engines and electric and hybrid vehicle solutions for the future. We all have an environmental responsibility to future generations and the Evora is another example where Lotus is seen to make significant steps towards improving the efficiency and sustainability of the motorcar keeping Britain at the forefront of the high technology motor industry.” By the time the Evora reaches the Lotus showrooms from Spring 2009 onwards, it will be the most thoroughly tested Lotus car in the history of Lotus. It will also be one of the company’s great milestones. The order book is now open in the UK and across continental Europe, with markets around the world to start taking orders in due course. Final specifications, options and prices of the production Lotus Evora will be published closer to the sale date in the many Lotus markets around the world. Mike Kimberley sums up, “This year Lotus celebrates its 60th anniversary and it is fitting that 2008 is also the birth of the Lotus Evora, a fantastic addition to the Lotus range. The Lotus Evora represents Group Lotus, a company that is at the forefront of the automotive industry, in a changing world where priorities of efficiency, economy and environmental impact go hand in hand with performance, design and individuality. I think Colin Chapman would have approved.”
