This impressive early Victorian house, comprising over 11,000 sq ft of accommodation, has become available for sale through Savills in Cobham. Striking an imposing position, Compton House stands in about one acre of grounds. Of particular note is the fine oak paneling in some of the principal reception rooms, believed to date from the 17th century and the Dutch tile fireplaces. Compton House is also of some historical significance. One of the first properties built on the Fairmile Park Estate, the house was owned and occupied between 1914 and 1920 by the pioneer aviator, Thomas Sopwith. It is believed that Sopwith designed his renowned Sopwith Camel, the British World War I single-set fighter biplane, at the in-built desk in the library at Compton. In 1920, the property was acquired by Philip Lyle, a noted mathematician and a member of the sugar refining company. Today, the property represents the very best of period charm and contemporary living, having been updated in recent years. The accommodation comprises master bedroom suite, 2 further bedroom suites, 7/8 further bedrooms. Grand reception hall, drawing room, dining room, family room, library, study, conservatory, kitchen/breakfast room, gym, games room, cellar. Garage, car port, terracing, garden of about 1 acre. Sited on an elevated spot on the highly desirable and internationally renowned St George’s Hill private estate in Weybridge, Thorn Hill enjoys fabulous panoramic views. A landmark property of baronial proportions, this Tudor style Tarrant built house dates from 1914. Owned by Boer War and Great War hero, the Earl of Dunmore, whose coat of arms remains over the entrance, the property was sold in 1931 and occupied by the German Embassy prior to the Second World War. Indeed, Joachim von Ribbentrop, German Foreign Minister between 1938 and 1945, is believed to have been a frequent guest at the house. Divided into three wings in the 1950s, the property retains many original features including ornate cornicing, solid oak doors, oak panelled walls and oak flooring. The gardens as a whole are bordered with mature tress and shrubs with sweeping lawns which lie to the rear of the property. Wisteria grows
up, adding its own particular beauty to the building during the spring and summer months. To the east, the garden features a hidden terrace with stone paving enclosed by Yew hedging and surrounded by box hedging and an assortment of trees. To the west, there are spectacular southerly views, a heated outdoor pool and pool house. Adjoining the main garden is a sunken lawn with shrubbery and a small pond. A rare opportunity to purchase the property as a whole and to transform it into one exceptional family house has now arisen. Simon Ashwell from Savills, comments: “With close proximity to the international airports plus excellent access to central London, St George’s Hill has historically been and remains, a top destination for high net worth and international purchasers. Thorn Hill is potentially one of the most exceptional properties within the private estate and certainly at the top of the league in terms of property available on the market today.” The accommodation comprises: Holland Hill: Master bedroom suite, 4 further bedrooms, family bathroom. Entrance hall, cloak/shower room, kitchen/breakfast room, drawing room and dining room. Breton Hill: Master bedroom suite, 6 further bedrooms, 4 further bathrooms (3 en suite), WC. Entrance hall, kitchen/breakfast room, dining room, drawing room, cellar with utility room and store. Shamwari: Master bedroom suite, 5 further bedrooms, 2 further bathrooms (1 en suite), roof terrace and store room. Drawing room, study, dining room, kitchen/breakfast room, cloakroom, cellar with 2 store rooms, utility room, wine cellar, gym, shower room, indoor swimming pool and plant room. To find out more about St George’s Hill, you can call Savills of Weybridge on 01932 838004.

Properties Near To Sporting Activities By Roger Paine In a nation obsessed with sport, and where national and local newspapers devote countless pages to every type of sport from football, ‘the beautiful game’, to horse-racing, ‘the sport of kings’, the idea of living near your favourite sporting activity can be attractive. Kent, Sussex and Surrey abound with sporting facilities to suit nearly every taste. The particulars of properties for sale throughout the counties frequently contain phrases like, “this house has easy access onto the golf course at…”; “there are spectacular views of the wellknown… racecourse”; “the excellent marina at …is only a short distance away”, and so on. But do such comments, irrespective of estate agents’ legendary hyperbole, make any difference when you are seeking to buy or sell? Opinions vary. Some agents point out that they include such details because sporting amenities put the property in the context of its location. In same way as “the property is five miles from Junction 5 of the M25” might be included. Others feel it is unlikely that many prospective purchasers will put sport high on their priority list even if proximity to sporting facilities can sometimes be an attractive inducement. In the main it will be ease of commuting, road and rail links, and nearness to schools and shops which are the key factors. It is not only mainstream sports which can be the attraction. National Trust areas and tracts of common land have become increasingly popular with cyclists, ramblers and joggers and an important recreational facility for families. The same applies to horse-riding, if not on common land then on bridleways or toll-rides. Properties with direct access to these are always sought after as there is no need to transport a horse box and children are able to ride in safety without crossing roads. Many properties close to golf courses have outstanding rural views and homeowners can be certain that the land will not be built on. On the other hand, if the view means there is a constant stream of golfers who
Dale Hill Golf Club 14
have an uninterrupted view of your house, as they are striding down the fairway, it can also be like living in a goldfish bowl. When it comes to cricket, it is not so much the attraction of owning a house near the grounds where county cricket is played but the ambience created when the game is played on a village green. Properties overlooking traditional village greens can attract a premium as they are regarded as the epitome of English country living. If there is a good pub and a spreading oak tree nearby then the pastoral scene is complete. Despite the occupational hazard of having a cricket ball from a well-struck six shattering your windows! For those who seek their recreation on water, or as Water Rat in The Wind in the Willows memorably remarked to Mole, “…there is absolutely nothing half so much worth doing as messing about in boats”, properties close to rivers and canals can be attractive. Houses that flank the River Medway from Tonbridge down to Aylesford are always popular with today’s “Ratty’s”, especially those who own houseboats or are serious rowers or scullers and have a boathouse in their garden where it backs onto the river. This is no less applicable when it comes to properties near the sailing and watersports facilities available on reservoirs, such as Bewl Water, or close to the sea and sheltered harbours or marinas. Ramsgate, Shoreham, and Bosham are exceptionally popular with yachties. Not infrequently home owners here will be those who have taken early retirement and are determined to live as close as possible to the pastime they have dreamed of having time to pursue. If it is not “Ready About!”, “Fifteen Love!” or “Fore!” that you want to hear, perhaps it is the timeless sound of willow on leather, shouts of “Howzat?” followed by a ripple of applause on a lazy summer’s afternoon. Whatever your favourite sporting activity there seems little doubt that you will always be able to live nearby.

Lottery grant to care for Weald Forest Ridge The rich heritage of the Weald Forest Ridge will be celebrated and protected by a grant of £1,920,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), it was announced today. The medieval landscape of rolling hills, abundant woodland, scattered farmsteads, and ancient routeways is steeped in history, legends and culture. The award was made under HLF's Landscape Partnership Scheme. These rural regeneration and landscape conservation schemes highlight the diversity of the UK's geography and its impact on our culture. Michelle Davies, Head of The Heritage Lottery Fund for the South East, said:

"Our landscapes are as much under threat as other parts of our heritage yet we often take them for granted. The Landscape Partnership Scheme is helping protect some of the UK's most spectacular scenery by bringing together groups, with a shared passion for supporting the heritage of the surrounding natural environment, to form strong partnerships." Set within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the Weald Forest Ridge runs from Tonbridge to Horsham, covering an area of 328km2. Today's news will enable the Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership to work with the 325,000 people living within the Ridge and its eight neighbouring urban towns to widen access to the area's special features and help protect them for future generations. Councillor Sylvia Tidy, Chairman of the High Weald Joint Advisory Committee and also a Weald Forest Ridge resident, said: “On behalf of the Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership, we are delighted to receive the HLF grant award. It will enable the Partnership to deliver our vision for the Weald Forest Ridge: creating a welcoming and treasured place, where habitat and visitor enhancements, skills creation and training, and the celebration of the Ridge’s unique landscape and cultural heritage will enhance the quality of life for local people and visitors alike.”

Work can now begin to enhance the special habitats and restore the surviving fragments of four medieval hunting forests that form the backbone of the Ridge. These include Ashdown Forest, at 2,500ha the largest area of publicly accessible open space in the South East, and St Leonard's Forest, where St Leonard was said to have fought a local dragon. State of the art aerial mapping techniques will identify the area's hidden archaeological legacy, while skills needed to safeguard and sustain the area will be taught. Broadwater Warren, another of the hunting forests dating back to the Middle Ages, will be returned to its former glory in one of the largest heathland restoration projects in the South East. There will be a wealth of opportunities for people to get involved or to find out more with activities such as walks, talks, poetry, storytelling and schools' education projects.

HISTORY
“Yo! Ho! Ho! And A Bottle Of Rum !” By Roger Paine Rum is a winter warming drink and an essential ingredient of Christmas cakes, punches and puddings. It is also, as the pirate Long John Silver’s song in “Treasure Island” never fails to remind, inextricably linked with ships, sea and the navy. The Royal Navy in particular. Yet not a glass of it has been regularly issued to Her Majesty’s sailors since 31st July 1970. This was known as ‘Black Tot Day’ and marked the last issue of rum in the Royal Navy. The Portsmouth Evening News recorded, “sailors in ships and establishments…said farewell to the last issue of ‘Nelson’s Blood’ by conducting mock funerals and wearing black armbands…”
drink! The issue was again reduced in 1850 to half a gill (equal to one gill or an 1/8th pint in modern terms) and this continued until 1970. The Admiralty then announced, “… in a highly sophisticated Navy no risk for margin or error, which might be attributable to rum, can be allowed”. The unenviable task of informing the fleet fell to the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Michael Le Fanu, who signalled: “Most farewell messages try to tear-jerk the tear from the eye, But I say to you lot, Very sad about tot, And thank you, good luck and goodbye”.
As the special naval tipple, rum has a fascinating history. Originally it was the quality of beer onboard ships, once referred to by a 17th century sea captain as “stinking”, plus the difficulty of keeping fresh water that led to the issue of rum. It was not unusual for ships visiting the West Indies to stock up on the cheap local spirit and the captain of HMS Greyhound, complaining about the slowness of his crew building a new jetty in Jamaica in 1727, even asked for them to be issued with a double ration. They were already receiving half a pint of rum per man per day, as an alternative to their entitlement to eight pints of beer, so his recommendation implied they should drink a pint of rum a day in order to make them work harder! By 1740, Admiral Vernon, naval commander in the Caribbean, was so appalled at the drunkeness in his fleet that he ordered: “Whereas the pernicious custom of seamen drinking their rum in drams (neat) is attended by many fatal effects…the daily issue of half a pint is to be diluted with a quart of water to be mixed in one scuttle-butt in the presence of the Lieutenant of the Watch” A daily issue of rum mixed with water, in the presence of an officer, subsequently took place every day in the Royal Navy for the next two and half centuries. The mixture immediately became known as ‘grog’ due to the admiral’s nickname, “Old Grogram”, because he wore a boatcloak made of grogram (‘grosgrain’), a coarse waterproof mixture of mohair and silk. It was not until 1784 that the Admiralty reluctantly accepted that rum was in the Navy to stay and appointed an official rum broker to ship it back to the bonded warehouses newly built at Gosport and Devonport. The rum came from Tortola, in what is now the British Virgin Islands. It is reputed that Nelson, having trained his guns on the capital Road Town, granted a reprieve when the island, in exchange for clemency, offered an unlimited supply of rum to the Royal Navy in perpetuity. In 1824, in a further attempt to curb drunkenness, the daily ration was reduced to one gill, which was equal then to a quarter of a pint now. So the rum issue, equivalent in strength to four double whiskies today, and in spite of being diluted with two equal parts of water, was still a lethal
In compensation for withdrawing the daily issue of neat rum to senior ratings and grog to sailors a sum of £2.7 million - equal to the cost of purchasing two years supply of rum - was provided by the Treasury to set up a welfare fund known as The Royal Naval Sailor’s Fund. This became known colloquially known as the “Tot Fund”. Nine years later the Admiralty approved the sale of the special blending formula and the distillery in Tortola to an American millionaire businessman, Charles Tobias. With these rights, and permission to feature the White Ensign on the bottle, he formed Pusser’s Ltd and began selling to the public for the first time. The rum is distilled in a process not unlike that used for the best single malt whiskies and the original wooden pot stills give the mahogany-hued liquid its unique flavour. The word “Pusser” derives from a corruption of the word “purser”, the officer onboard ship responsible for providing food and stores. “Pusser’s Rum” is now marketed worldwide and Mr Tobias is a generous benefactor of the “Tot Fund” which receives a donation from the sale of each case of rum sold. The expression “splice the mainbrace”, the suggestion to have a drink to celebrate a special occasion, recalls the Royal Navy’s tradition of authorizing a double measure of rum to everyone onboard, perhaps after a battle or in recognition of a special event, e.g. a visit by the sovereign, or a fleet review. It derived from the days of sail when if the mainbrace parted in a storm (the braces were the lines used to trim the sails) the ends had to be spliced together again, still in bad weather. This was a tough and skilled job so those who carried it out were rewarded with an extra tot of rum. On hearing the announcement “Up Spirits”, which at ten minutes to noon every day would signify that the rum was being issued, old salts would mutter, “Stand Fast the Holy Ghost”. When drinking rum at the festive season it might be more appropriate to drink a toast, using the Royal Navy’s traditional invitation to drain your glass, “Sandy Bottoms”!

CliveSawyer Photographer
Clive Sawyer is a long established travel and location photographer whose work has been used throughout the world in a vast array of publications. He has been commissioned to take photographs in over 50 countries on four continents as well as numerous assignments here in the UK. From his wide variety of images he is now presenting a choice selection of limited edition prints to be sold in his Gallery situated in the old citadel of Rye, East Sussex and also on his easy to use website, www.clivephotographer.com. Open since early spring 2008, his work has already sold to buyers from all over the world who have either visited his Gallery or bought from his website. The photographic images range from unique views of London to the forests of North America to the remote border towns of Mexico. These photographs are printed onto a diverse range of materials such as artists’ canvas, fine art papers, acrylic and brushed Aluminium. The use of cutting edge materials is particularly exciting because of the new options it provides for the presentation of Clive’s work. To give an example, printing onto brushed aluminium alloy gives certain aspects of an image, such as the reflection of water, an alternative dimension, allowing for greater creative exploration. Alternative forms of media can also enhance the realism of images that lend themselves to a certain material. For instance, printing on aluminium alloy really brings to life the metallic shine seen in ‘Autochrome’, a compositional image featuring the bodywork of classic American automobiles. Perhaps this
28
is why the words most frequently used by visitors of the gallery to describe Clive’s work are both ‘different’ and ‘stunning’. By printing on the highest quality materials and using a top of the range Hasselblad camera to capture his images Clive is able to attain a simply sensational level of detail in sharpness and in depth of colour. Showcased by exceptional quality framing or mounted onto canvas, an all round quality product that will last a lifetime is assured. In the vast majority of cases the image will only be printed in a limited edition run in each form of media, so that a level of exclusiveness is maintained. To find out more you can call Clive on 01797 222213.

Christmas with John Betjeman By Roger Paine John Betjeman was one of the best known poets, writers and broadcasters of the 20th century. Born to a middle class family in Hampstead, North London in 1906, he was knighted in 1969 and held the post of Poet Laureate from 1972 until his death at Trebetherick, Cornwall in 1984. After school at Marlborough, he went to Magdalen College, Oxford where, despite having immersed himself in books and writing from an early age, he was considered to be a failure and left without a degree. This rankled with him for the rest of his life although he retained an enduring love of Oxford and received an honorary doctorate of letters from the university in 1974. His school and college days are movingly recorded in his blank verse autobiography ‘Summoned by Bells’, published in 1960, and made into a television film in 1976. The book remains a best-seller, not least at Christmas, thanks to the author’s easyto-read style and candid observations. The same might be said about his poetry, much of which is immediately recognizable by its wry humour and quintessential Englishness. By using unpretentious rhythms, metre and rhymes (although not as simple as they sometimes appear), Betjeman’s work has always captured the imagination of millions of people from all walks of life. Many of whom would not normally consider reading a poem. Betjeman was also a prolific writer on architecture, with a fondness for Victorian buildings, especially churches and railway stations. Active in campaigning to save historic buildings from the bulldozers he was instrumental in saving St Pancras railway station in London. When plans to demolish the building were announced he is said to have called the intention a “criminal folly”. A statue of him, at platform level, commemorating the part he played in successfully ensuring this magnificent building still exists in its original form was unveiled when the station re-opened as the terminus for Eurostar in November 2007. During the 60’s and 70’s Betjeman made many television appearances, often reading his own work. In his corduroy suit, badly-knotted tie, crumpled collar and battered trilby he portrayed a bumbling and avuncular image. He appeared to be someone who never took himself
30
too seriously, the epitome of the English virtue of understatement. This endeared him to many sections of the public although his critics alleged he was often out of touch, wallowed in nostalgia and did not want to face up to the realities of modern life. Elements of this are probably true but he was always respected for being a deeply religious man, a practising Christian and dedicated to the Anglican church. In his poem ‘Christmas’, published in a collection entitled ‘A Few Late Chrysanthemums’ in 1954, he openly celebrates the religious as well as the secular significance of the birth of Christ. Using the colours found in an artist’s palette, ‘Crimson Lake to Hooker’s Green’, to describe those in a church’s stained glass window; or mentioning one-time popular gifts, ‘inexpensive scent’, ‘bath salts’ and ‘hideous tie’ to convey the austerity of Christmas in post-war Britain, he paints a lasting and memorable word picture. Whilst the last three verses proclaim Christ’s birth, they do so in the form of a question, ‘And is it true?’ This has sometimes been regarded as Betjeman questioning his own faith but in view of the poem’s final line is more likely to be an affirmation of his piety. The poem deserves to be read aloud at Christmas, . Recalling Betjeman’s own words, “Too many people in the modern world view poetry as a luxury, not a necessity like petrol. But to me it’s the oil of life”. This first verse of 'Christmas' is taken from Collected Poems by John Betjeman, available from booksellers at £12.99, and is published with the permission of John Murray (Publishers). Christmas The bells of waiting Advent ring, The Tortoise stove is lit again And lamp-oil light across the night Has caught the streaks of winter rain In many a stained-glass window sheen From Crimson Lake to Hooker’s Green.

Tuohy Opens To Applause In St Leonards Aspect attended at the opening of artist Andy Tuohy exhibition Poster Moderne at the McCarrons Gallery in the up and coming area of Norman Road in St Leonards on Sea. The Friday evening event was packed to the rafters with locals, artists and celebrities to view the stylistic and riveting work displayed on the walls. His template for the work comes from the railway and tourism posters from the 1930s and 40s. Taking local landmarks such as the modernist De La Warr Pavilion to the ancient structure of Battle Abbey, Andy crafts some stunning work, which almost appears two dimensional when viewed at close hand. A modest and unassuming man, Andy hopes to hold a series of Poster Moderne exhibitions in every coastal town down to Cornwall. To find out more about visit the gallery or www.mccarrons.co.uk,. Ars longa, vita brevis The inscription that has greeted visitors to the Fairfax Gallery since 1995 seems especially relevant in 2008. The Latin phrase, whilst much debated, can be viewed to imply that whilst life is short, that art lasts forever. This may be difficult to see with conceptual art. However, in more tangible forms such as paintings and sculpture, the owner becomes the custodian of something that will hopefully give them endless pleasure and can be passed on to future generations. The Fairfax Gallery’s 14th Christmas features over 20 artists. A number of these are established, award-winning and emerging talents, including graduates from the last 4 decades of The Royal Academy Schools, The Slade, Central St Martins and The Glasgow School of Art. Whilst the Fairfax exhibits both figurative and abstract work, it has a distinct identity that has gained a loyal following with clients and enabled Fairfax to open galleries in Burnham Market & Chelsea. The Tunbridge Wells gallery is situated in the heart of the historic Pantiles, adjacent to the Tourist information building on the lower walk. The listed building is set over two floors and retains many of its original features, making it an ideal backdrop to view artwork often destined for a residential setting. Andrew and all at the gallery are happy to give advice about buying a piece of original art and are happy to bring to a clients home in order that they can view in situ. This is particularly helpful with larger pieces and can ensure complete satisfaction before purchase. The Christmas Exhibition runs throughout December until January 15th. To find out more call Fairfax Gallery of Tunbridge Wells on 01892 525525.

Party Time! By Jon Firth-Photographer So the end of 2008 has arrived, which means Christmas is upon us. Whether or not Christmas has been over comercialised, and whether or not you celebrate Christmas itself, it is still a time of friends and family geting together, and of course the work party season. Lets face it we all need a little fun at what is usually a pretty gray and chilly time of the year. And that doesn’t have to be fun involving a photo copier!
I was once mortified after sitting at a large group table to see no one tipping. Not because it wasn’t a good do, just a kind of weird no one else is- I’m too shy to say anything situation. Even a pound each shows you respect the people working hard for you, if you think you shouldn’t tip I really hope I’m never sat next to you anyware-you may be thought of as a bit of a numpty when you leave and I’d hate to be lumped in with that!
I will be out busily shooting Christmas parties with my latest digital camera, a great time to fiddle about with the latest wonder camera-after all parties are hardly high pressure. This is an ideal time to see what works and what doesn’t with the new kit .Wedding customers don’t really deserve to be ‘technologically experimented’ on during their big day after all! Make the most of it if you see an events photographer out and about. Sometimes a background may be used too, extremely good quality prints may be produced in a very short space of time for you to take away on the night. Compared to a conventional high street studio these photos are a real bargain. You can judge for yourself if the photographer is any good as it will become pretty obvious pretty quickly.
Well another photography editorial not that much about photography, but then again if you want to talk about that give me a call. As always here are a few seasonal photo’s for you to enjoy. Have a wonderful festive time, and remember this is the season of giving to those less fortunate as well as disco acrobatics! If you would like to contact Jon you can do so on, 01424 214072.
As well as Christmas parties remember hotels in general offer great deals after December for private hire, in their traditionally low season. If you are celebrating a family occasion there is no better time to get a great deal, and cheer everyone up in those cold January, February & March months. With 18ths, 21sts, 30th 40th and fiftieth birhdays, plus christenings/baby namings, anniverseries, batmitzvas etc etc there isn’t too far to look for a reason to have a party. Quiet soiret or more rumbustuous knees up remember to book a photographer to capture the event for you. For the more mature generations, the opportunity to take away a photo of themselves together with the grandchildren all dressed smartly is simply the best thing since sliced bread more often than not. Despite the medias obsession with gloom and doom most people seem to be doing just fine, though a little tightening of belts all round may be on the cards for a while, so make the most of those extra special hotel deals in the winter low season and conserve yourself a few pounds that way. Just one more thing, do think about all those people helping to contribute to you having a good time (and I don’t just mean us poor photographers). Waiters and waitresses, taxi drivers, DJs, bands, singers, all those that get taken sometimes a little for granted. These people will be feeling the pinch more than you so remember the season of goodwill to all. 35

Homemade Roasts Just Got a Little Easier with Waitrose Whether it’s extra crispy roast potatoes, huge fluffy Yorkshire puddings or homemade gravy with that top secret ingredient, we all have our favourite part of a roast dinner. This range uses all the simple methods you would use at home, just on a slightly grander scale. We’ve used simple, clean ingredients so our customers can save some time and stress without compromising the quality of the food. It’s about bringing back the basics into our cooking, so we’ve got Yorkshire puddings made in Yorkshire, and even exclusive suet dumplings.’ Using all the tricks of the trade, like slow roasting bones and simmering them overnight to make fresh stocks, Waitrose has created a whole section dedicated to help you create a glorious homemade Sunday roast, casserole or even bangers and mash- without the hassle.
The perfect Christmas selection from Marks & Spencer M&S is dedicated to making the traditional meal special whilst still offering the exceptional quality and value. Across all the whole birds, M&S is proud to offer free range British poultry this Christmas. Two new additions this year are the Free Range Ballotine of Turkey & Chicken with Redcurrant Stuffing and a Turkey Breast Joint with sage and onion stuffing topped with a bacon lattice. The new speciality Christmas Pudding with Irish Stout (£8.99, 907g), pictured, is made to a traditional recipe, which uses beef suet to create the unique characteristic flavour and texture of the pudding along with specially selected plump vine fruits, glace cherries, almonds, double cream and black treacle. The pudding is then laced with Irish stout, Jamaican rum and French brandy to create a dark, rich and intense pudding that will have food lovers asking for seconds. To finish three of the finest English cheeses, a jar of chutney, oatcakes, and a bottle of port, presented on a wooden board with glass cloche and knife to finish the meal off in style.

Rural Retreat James McNeill visits an ancient freehouse in Kent. The Woolpack at Warehorne is about as backwater as you will find in this modern era. Nestling in the Kent countryside between Romney Marsh and Tenterden, the tiny hamlet of Warehorne is a quiet and idyllic neck of the woods, as far removed from the nearby bustling town of Ashford as you can get. If you decide to visit, use your sat nav to negociate the tiny winding country tracks. Expect the road to be blocked by the odd flock of sheep being moved from field to field. Pass by the odd ancient tractor, or be overtaken by a lady on a pushbike that dates from World War Two. Don’t be surprised if you see the battalion from Dads Army yomping over the fields on manoever, with Private Pike looking forward to a hearty lemonade served up by his favourite barmaid at the Woolpack. When we arrived at The Woolpack a few hardy souls were outside, Labradors, Barbour and Range Rover were the orders of the day. Opposite the pub is an ancient church with Norman origins (well worth a look inside) and sheep grazing amongst the the tombstones. The only footnote from modern life in this charming backwater of Kent is the view to the coast, where one can just spy the stunning towers of the new wind farm on Romney Marsh. The building as you can see, is charming and welcoming from outside. A country inn, the building dates back to the 16th century. Ducking inside to the bar, the place is a warm and welcoming retreat from a cold, rainy and windy autumn afternoon outside. The large fireplace holds a warm crackling fire with locals warming their derrieres after long walks with dogs in tow. A nod to the close proximity and influence of France is apparent with the plaque over the bar which states Vins de Savoie.
on the blackboard. Good local beer is to be expected and I nursed an excellent pint of Harveys at the bar with a couple of regulars. I started off with a flourish, a tasty and creamy Leek Soup with crusty bread. This hit the spot on a cold and wet afternoon. The Missus tucked in to a generous helping of King Prawns on a bed of lettuce from the specials board, which was superb. Service was prompt and friendly and presentation of the food is in the modern style, which strangely fitted in nicely with the traditional surroundings.
The bar and restaurant area complement well - beams, tiled bar and dried hops then on to carpets, candles, rugs, weathered pine furniture and cosy views outside bring the whole atmosphere together perfectly. We visited on a Sunday, so the carvery was all set up in the bar, thus allowing the chefs to concentrate on orders on the menu. For those with big appetites The Woolpack pack them in on Wednesdays with an all you can eat carvery at only £8.95. There are two separate cosy restaurants at The Woolpack, plus a private dining area with another cosy fire. The bar small and intimate with a friendly buz. Service was brisk and friendly, even though the restaurant was packed to the rafters. I enjoyed an excellent glass of Cotes de Gascoigne . Plenty of choice on the wine menu, mainly French and New World. We also sampled a Chilean Sauvignon Ladera Verde at only £11.95 was an excellent choice, which we recommend. For food there are four or five starters and seven main courses, plus the specials
The highlight of the day was the superb Slow Braised Rump of Lamb. Medallions of gorgeous lamb sat on a bed of mash, onions and gravy, The celery and thyme sauce set off the dish immaculately. I was also suitably impressed with my Pan Roasted Corn fed Chicken Breast. The unusual sauce worked well again. Chef at the Woolpack knows how to concoct a special sauce and match to the meat accordingly. With the chicken came a sautéed oyster mushrooms and a spring onion and white wine sauce. Inspired. We ended with coffees and a superb chocolate ice cream- locally sourced from Bonnington and tasty home made apple crumble with cream. Other potential winter puddings on the menu includeTreacle Sponge Pudding and Chocolate Truffle Torte. Tempted?.Your wallet may well be tempted too. For three including one child the bill came in at £65. I suggest that you succumbto temptation and pay The Woolpack at Warehorne a visit sometime soon. Tell Captain Mainwaring at the bar that Aspect sent you. The Woolpack Inn. Warehorne, Kent TN262LL. Telephone 01233 733888.

FASHION
Be smart and stand out from the crowd Never has the time been more perfect to review just how much money we are spending, particularly on clothes, accessories hair and makeup. In this very magazine fifteen years ago, Sue Perry from Imageworks wrote articles advising on subjects such as ‘How to review and revitalise your wardrobe’ ‘How to make shopping for clothes quick and painless.’ ‘How to look ten years younger’ and ‘What not to wear to an interview’ Always when a credit crunch bites consumers realise they can not have 80% of their wardrobe hanging there haunting them, hardly worn. When there is much more competition for interviews and jobs, how do we make ourselves stand out from the crowd and look more vital. Do not spend another penny until you first have all the facts and information. Learn how to recognise the essence of your look, so that you can move through life with ease and grace and confidence. What you wear can change your life – empower yourself. Imageworks is in Battle High Street -01424 775774.
The UK's First Beauty Contest for Women of All Shapes and Sizes They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and now the organisers of Britain's latest beauty pageant, Miss Beauty UK, are set to prove the point by launching the UK's first ever beauty contest that is open to women of all shapes and sizes. Miss Beauty UK is the brainchild of entrepreneur Rupa Kanabar (www.rupakanabar.com), former Miss India Commonwealth with over eight years experience in the modelling and pageant industry, who now runs her own successful model management company: RK Artist Management. "My vision for the Miss Beauty UK pageant is to celebrate the spirit of beauty for real women across the UK regardless of their shape or size. The winner will gain national recognition as a powerful, visible and credible spokeswoman for various issues and an ambassador for the Miss Beauty UK program."This is a first in the beauty pageant industry here and looks set to firmly establish Miss Beauty UK as one of the UK's most important beauty contests. Prizes in the competition are unprecedented with the winner receiving £25,000 - by far the largest cash prize ever awarded in a UK beauty pageant. She will also win a 14 day International dream holiday, a 1 year contract with RK Artist Management, a funded study course at college, University or Post Graduate, as well as many other benefits and prizes such as free gym membership and her own website for a year. Second and third placed contestants will also receive a 1 year management contract with RK Artist Management and a 7 day European holiday. The organisers of Miss Beauty UK have strived hard to break down the barriers normally associated with entering conventional beauty contests. The competition is open to all women aged between 18 and 29 and there are no restrictions on lifestyle or whether contestants are married, have children or are divorced. This marks an important and refreshing step forward in the beauty pageant industry and emphasises the contest's key purpose of celebrating the spirit of beauty in all women. All applicants will be reviewed and short listed to 50 contestants per region for the semi-finals. The 7 regions consist of: London,
Birmingham, Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Glasgow. All semi-finalists will be entered into a bonus photographic heat round in which the public can vote for their favourite girl in each region. There will be a total of 7 regional winners from this photographic heat. The remaining 49 girls per region will then compete in their regional semi-final events of which 7 winners will join the current 7 photographic heat winners to make a total of 14 girls competing in the grand final. The organisers of Miss Beauty UK are keen to forge links with sponsors and charities and have a number of opportunities available for both regional and national sponsors to become involved in what is set to become the UK's most prestigious beauty pageant title. For further information on this exciting new beauty event or to apply visit www.missbeautyuk.com. 49

Buy a Heart for your Lady Lady Heart is a three-stone patented diamond design that gives new meaning to the concept of love today, tomorrow and always. Two exclusive Ladycut® diamonds hug a princess cut diamond to form an inspiring heart that appears brighter and larger than a traditional heart-shaped diamond of equal size and carat weight. The combination of these three diamonds allows the creation of an almost limitless number of identical hearts in a collection of
magnificent jewellery, including striking necklaces, elegant bracelets, designer rings and classic drop earrings. In a combination so pure, brilliant and unique it was granted four distinct international patents for both its cut and design. Unlike ordinary half-moon diamonds which lack brilliance and fire, the patented Lady Cut® is a 57-facet step-cut which maximizes both. It provides a distinctive and beautiful gift for anyone with a passion for diamonds. Lady Heart prides itself on the quality of diamonds chosen for their collection. All the individual pieces come with the Lady Heart international guarantee card as a hallmark of quality and authenticity.

It was a proud moment for the company when Fortis became the official watch of the International Space Station in 2007. Today in space astronauts and cosmonauts wear the Fortis watch. The range splits into four categories: - The B42 Official Cosmonauts. The B42 Pilot and Flieger Professional. The Marine Master. The Square. All models are fitted with hardened sapphire crystal, which is twice as scratch resistant as ordinary crystal glass. The automatic winding is based on the original Harwood design, with a power reserve of between 38 and 48 hours. No higher accolade can be awarded to a high performance sports watch than to be judged suitable for the extreme pressures and rigours of space. In 1961 Yuri Gagarin, the first Russian cosmonaut in space, wore a little known brand called Sturmanskie. John Glen the USA’s first
astronaut used a Heuer stopwatch. Scott Carpenter the forth US astronaut wore a Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaut. The Omega Speedmaster was made famous in 1969 by the Moon Landings. Since 1994 Fortis have supported space travel by providing the International Space Station with high performance precision timekeeping. The International Space Station is the largest and most complex scientific project in history involving 16 nations: - USA, Russia, Canada, Japan, Brazil and the 11 nations of the European Space Agency. Whether you are looking for a pilot’s watch, a cosmonaut’s watch, an automatic wound mechanical alarm chronograph watch or just a good quality sports watch, you must come and see the Fortis range.

EDUCATION
On The Cover, A Flair For Education - Battle Abbey Preparatory School Battle Abbey School is a thriving co-educational boarding and day school for children aged from 2 – 18. It is located on two sites – the Preparatory School stands in its own attractive, spacious grounds in central Bexhill-on-Sea, and the Senior School is located in Battle, within the stunning surroundings of Battle Abbey and overlooking the famous 1066 Battlefield.
Hands Up! Battle Abbey Prep School
The Preparatory School in Bexhill-on-Sea (01424) 219674, has superb facilities, including a recently-refurbished 25 metre indoor swimming pool and a new astro-turf multi-sport pitch. Great Beginnings at the Nursery
The Nursery now occupies its new premises, immediately adjacent to the Prep. School. This is a large house purposely designed and converted to accommodate little people with inquisitive minds. It enjoys the advantages of sharing certain excellent Prep. School facilities, whilst having the sanctuary of its own spacious, well-resourced and stimulating building and garden. Children of 3 and 4 years of age are entitled to a Nursery grant. Pupils at the Prep School Swimming Pool
Judy Clark, Head of Battle Abbey Preparatory School and Nursery says, “We believe very strongly that children should not view education as something that has to be endured, but as an exciting experience that will enable them to approach life flexibly and creatively and with confidence. Children are growing up today in an age of technology and
so it is important to blend the acquisition of traditional skills with that of the most up-to-date technology to prepare them for the world around them. The foundations for that love of learning must clearly be laid at an early age, inspired by able and dedicated teachers in a well resourced and attractive environment. ” Continuity of education is one of Battle Abbey School’s key attractions, and pupils may apply to join us at any time during their school career. Preparatory School pupils transfer at 11, subject to academic attainment, to a guaranteed place in the Senior School in Battle where, with its excellent academic results and impressive facilities, places are hotly contested. Please telephone (01424) 219674 to visit the Nursery and Preparatory School in Bexhill-on-Sea, and (01424) 772385 to make an appointment to visit the Senior School in Battle. Young Professionals Offered Shared Equity Lifeline With 100 per cent mortgages a thing of the past, more and more new homeowners are struggling to make a move on to the property ladder. But now thanks to Oakdene Homes’ Shared Equity initiative, potential purchasers who are looking to invest in the Kent commuterland, are offered the financial assistance necessary to be able to purchase a new home at Clockhouse Mews at Swaylands in Penshurst or New Aspects in Edenbridge. Oakdene Homes’ announcement of its Shared Equity scheme comes as a result of ever toughening market conditions. The initiative aims to provide young professionals and first time buyers with a money saving lifeline and will make it within easier reach for them to own a new home and benefit from its equity, thus laying the foundation for a secure financial future. The Shared Equity initiative is available for properties under £500,000 at Oakdene Homes’ two schemes in Kent. It allows purchasers to defer borrow 25 per cent of the total cost of their new home and pay only 75 per cent themselves. The deal will help buyers who do not have a large enough deposit to invest in a property, as banks will be more inclined to lend 100% of the 75% they have available. The purchaser owns 75 per cent of their new home, while 25 per cent is kept back by Oakdene Homes. The only requirement being that they repay the borrowed amount after ten years or when they sell the property. By taking advantage of this initiative, buyers can benefit from significant price savings at the developments. Ann Fulker, Sales and Marketing Director for Oakdene Homes comments: “In today’s current climate it is becoming even more difficult for new homeowners to invest in property and we are committed to providing buyers with the chance of being able to secure a new home. Our offer of shared equity is designed to provide purchasers with a helping hand making the whole buying process more financially viable and less stressful for them.”
Oakdene Homes are currently marketing the Shared Equity initiative at the following schemes: Clockhouse Mews at Swaylands, Penshurt, Kent Tucked away in the Garden of England, Swaylands is a prestigious conversion by Oakdene Homes of the historic society house on the outskirts of Penshurst, Kent, which includes 28 luxurious two and three bedroom apartments and six adjacent mews houses called Clockwork Mews. The mews building is located adjacent to the spectacular Swaylands development, which was once owned by the Drummond family. Clockwork Mews is one of the finest addresses in Kent, surrounded by rolling countryside, pretty woodland walks, magnificent rock garden and beautiful man-made lake on the development’s 50-acre grounds. Prices at Clockhouse Mews start from £425,000. New Aspects, Edenbridge, Kent In a convenient town centre location, under an hour away from central London, this is a development of two, three and four bedroom houses and two bedroom apartments. With a stylish specification, modern kitchens and bathrooms and private allocated parking for the 24 units, New Aspects is ideally designed for those with a busy lifestyle. Prices at New Aspects start from £194,950 for a two-bedroom apartment, £244,950 for a two-bedroom house, £299,950 for a threebedroom house and £369,950 for a four-bedroom townhouse. Oriental Rugs Link to Ancient Heritage In the 21st century age of iPhones, SatNav and global internet, an oriental rug provides a romantic link through hundreds of years of history. Indeed, Persian carpets and rugs feature in many old master paintings. These were handmade in workshops not much different to those that can be found today in Iran and surrounding countries.
Women of the Shasavan tribe on migration to the high summer pastures
Other, more everyday rugs were and are knotted (pile rugs) or woven (flatweaves or “kilims”) by the women of nomadic tribes. The picture shows women of the Shahsavan tribe on migration to the summer pastures. All their storage bags are handwoven as are many other domestic items including the nomadic equivalent of the picnic mat or “sofreh”. Sofrehs are often produced with wonderful free designs like the zigzag one to the right. The great Persian tribes of Luri, Shahsavan and Qashqai all produce rugs and carpets in their own distinctive styles. For example the Qashqai shows typical floral detailing – often small animals and figures feature as well. Luris tend to be softer more coarsely woven rugs. Within these broad tribal types there are hundreds of regional variations sometimes identifiable down to a particular village. Gabbehs are another very popular rug of today. These are thick heavy all wool rugs which are made in a huge variety of designs from completely plain to interpretations of traditional styles to startlingly modern looking bold statements.
Below: Persian sofreh (eating mat) 30-40 years old 115 x 130cm (ref 284)
Oriental Rugs Online aim to choose the most interesting and unusual rugs showing as many of these variations as possible. Their website is extremely informative, containing a glossary of these tribal and regional keywords linking to specific examples. A search facility is also provided which helps you to narrow down the choice of rug to suit your specific taste and requirements. If you decide to purchase online from the site, please take advantage of the special 10% discount offer to readers of Aspect County. Just enter the promotional code of 55AC672 on the checkout page. Of course this won’t affect Oriental Rugs standard no-quibble money back guarantee if for any reason the rug doesn’t suit you when you see it at home. Alternatively, you can call into the shop where you can claim the same discount. All the rugs shown as illustrations to this article can be viewed on the Oriental Rugs Online website (www.orientalrugsonline.co.uk) and at their shop at 78 Norman Road, St Leonards-on-Sea.

New Electronic Handle-Free Option From William Ball With a well-established reputation for providing high quality furniture solutions within the kitchen, office, living room and bedroom, William Ball has introduced another ingenious innovation to its portfolio: the Servo electrical drive opening support system for drawers and pull-outs. Designed especially for handle-free drawers and pull-out cabinets, this electronic system takes the effort out of drawer opening and has the added extra of being completely silent. Besides the obvious technical benefits, one of the great things about Servo is its ability to open units anywhere on the fascia, so a touch of the knee or foot will open a bottom drawer without the user bending or when their hands are full. An obvious choice for the busy home, or for the less mobile user. To find out more about William Ball drawers call 0800 581107.
Dying To Escape The Cold This Winter? Traveling abroad to escape the cold and dreary winter months in the UK is something a lot of people do, but in the excitement of getting into your swimwear again and lounging in the sun, it’s easy to forget the message that CORGI is pushing to holiday makers, to be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. CORGI, the UK’s gas safety watchdog is urging people to be vigilant to the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning when spending winter somewhere warmer this year by calling for all holiday makers to take an audible carbon monoxide alarm away with them, wherever they may be venturing to. Known as the ‘silent killer’, carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous substance that you cannot see, smell or taste. Carbon monoxide is potentially fatal, and even low levels of the poison can leave you with lasting damage to your health. It is produced when a carbon-based fuel (gas, wood, oil or coal) is burnt without an adequate oxygen supply, such as boilers and cookers, which means taking an audible carbon monoxide alarm should be high on your list of important things to pack, along with your sun cream and snorkel. The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to the ‘flu’, and can include: headaches, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, stomach and chest pains. If you feel ill whilst using an appliance, but feel better once you are in fresh air, you could be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. This Winter, CORGI is campaigning to make sure we are all aware of the dangers we can face while on holiday in the sun. Holidays are meant to be about getting away from the daily stresses of life, to relax and chill out, but your holiday accommodation could have a silent killer waiting for you, something you could be prepared for. Carbon
monoxide is known as the silent killer as you cannot see or smell it but it’s potentially lethal. CORGI’s Chief Executive, Mike Thompson, said: “Safety standards in other countries may vary leaving you with no way of telling whether you’ll be safe in the apartment or hotel you’re staying in. After the incident in Corfu in 2006, where two young children tragically died after carbon monoxide overcame their villa, it is incredibly important to ensure the accommodation you’re staying in is safe. If you follow CORGI’s simple safety steps - these will help to keep you and your family safe”. CORGI’s tips for staying safe from carbon monoxide poisoning whilst on holiday abroad are: Check what gas safety precautions your tour operators have in place before leaving to go on holiday. Check if there is an audible carbon monoxide alarm in the accommodation – if there isn’t one ensure that you take one with you. Ensure that the audible carbon monoxide alarm you take with you is CE approved – batteries will need to be removed before taking it on the plane and it should be kept in your hand luggage. You can buy a carbon monoxide alarm from your local CORGI registered installer, from a merchant such as B&Q and from CORGI. For further information on carbon monoxide visit: www.trustcorgi.com or www.becarbonmonoxideaware.com or call CORGI on 0800 915 0480. 69

When Nature Calls The Maxwell brothers of WM Design take bespoke, interior grace to new limits – and prove their new coffee table design has legs (exquisite oak ones of course). DESIGN studio and contemporary furniture showroom, Wayne Maxwell Design present the Ulwembu coffee table; a valiant new offering in their philosophy on elegant, innovative modern living. With a striking base, well-crafted from unyielding European oak, roofed with 10mm of toughened glass, it’s easy to imagine the Ulwembu – ‘Spider’ in Zulu - as something of a behemoth animal; Rigid, severe and inflexible. But the table’s robust yet humble, unassuming appearance takes you immediately and leads your attention on a tour of its smooth lines and sophisticated design. You are made aware very quickly that this is a nimble, agile creature. So much so, that you can envisage Ulwembu crawling around your living room with eloquent aplomb. The studio’s dexterous use of glass and wood is arresting and presents a perfect amalgamation of charisma, style and strength. These qualities are indicative of the comprehensive WM Design range of furniture. From commanding beds to subtle sideboards, each design blends in flawlessly with life, and Ulwembu it seems, is no different. What’s more, all the wood used, comes from sustainable forests so you can buy with eco-friendly confidence. WM Design’s whole range is inspired by the brothers’ travel exploits and their yearning to create furniture that exhibits warmth, comfort and simplicity. Ulwembu is designed with cozy living in mind and is ideal for areas where space is an issue. The ‘spider’ stands proud from a distance and draws you in to discern, each grain of the oak on which it stands; thus catering for the glancing and inspecting eye. With a plethora of designs built to last, bound together with a friendly, professional service from concept to delivery, WM Design combine quality of materials with expert craftsmanship, bold styling and above all, functional design for contemporary living.

The New Slimline Montana Plasma TV Fireplace From Picture House How do you avoid the plasma TV fireplace overpowering your living room? The answer is the new slimline Montana plasma TV fireplace from Picture House TV Furniture (www.picturehouse.eu). The plasma TV is hidden inside an elegant, fully working fireplace, which emits 2kW of heat. Press the remote and the plasma TV automatically lifts to viewing height; press it again and it magically disappears. The TV switches off automatically to save power. It’s the ideal choice if you’re tight on space, as it has a small footprint (only measuring 334mm front to back). With the Montana, there’s space to put all your DVD and cable equipment, which are hidden when not in use. There are no more messy wires and cables, as they are all hidden from view. Award-winning inventor and furniture designer David Free, who runs Picture House TV Furniture and presents “The Great British
Woodshop” on Discovery Real Time says: “My living room looked soulless with this big black box on the wall – so I came up with this idea of concealing the plasma TV inside a working fireplace – which creates one focal point for the room.” The Montana is in cream marble, with a contemporary, stylish hearth mounted upright fire, although there are many different fire options available. There is also the option of pebbles, lava rock, woodland log or driftwood. The plasma TV fireplace will take up to a 50in plasma TV. The plasma TV fireplace is remote controlled. This means you can turn on the heat, adjust the heat, switch the fire on and off – all from the comfort of your armchair. The marble surround is free standing and doesn’t require a chimney or flue, so if you move house, you take it with you. Picture House’s plasma TV fireplaces are environmentally-friendly as the TV is turned off when it is not in use and automatically turns on when it is raised up. This means the TV is not on standby and does not consume any power unless it is being watched, thereby reducing the household carbon footprint. Other new designs in the Picture House portfolio include the Richmond, the Havana and the Valenza. A range of different electric flame effect fires are available so the fireplace can be fitted with the fire of your choice. To find out more call 01932 345184 or visit www.picturehouse.eu

True & Careful Fireplace Restoration Since ancient times the true heart of the home has always been the hearthside. A place to gather after a long cold day, the fireplace still maintains its central role in many households.
Before
For those who are privileged enough to own a period property, the fireplace is an essential feature their home. Not only a place for warmth and comfort, but an important aesthetic feature of the building. In period houses the fireplace is always the focus and central hub of the home. Clearly an old fireplace is not to be tinkered with lightly, certainly not by inexperienced hands. Many householders search in vain for a specialist who can restore their fireplace to its former glory. To this end Inglenook Restoration Ltd were founded specifically to lovingly restore tired old fireplaces. Run by a father and son team base in Wittersham, Kent, they boast over seventy years experience in this field. Reliable hands indeed. “After a thorough site inspection we will be able to assess the job in hand and plan ahead,” said son Steve Lemon of Inglenook Restoration Limited. “From there we will source reclaimed materials that will match the job perfectly.” Using their extensive network of contacts in the trade, they are confident that they can bring your fireplace back to its original glowing glory. The raw materials are reclaimed stone, old bricks and oak beams. Dealing with dampness and blast cleaning are weapons in the Inglenook Restoration armoury. Inglenook Restoration are specialists in what we will call the glue to pull the job together- careful lime plastering or lime mortars to complete the look.
Not only will your fireplace look the part aesthetically, but the thorough approach and careful work will bring the safety level up to standard. “We will be able to bring your fireplace back to life by using time honoured traditional methods of craftsmanship” said Steve. If your fireplace is in need of some love and attention you can call Inglenook Restoration Ltd on 01797 270773, mobile 0787565582, or visit www.inglenookrestoration.com After

HOMES & INTERIORS If you are looking for something a bit different when it comes to interiors you just have to pay a visit to the Gallery136 showroom in East Peckham, near Tonbridge in Kent. Conveniently located on Branbridges Road - just off the A228, about two minutes from The Hop Farm, it holds an array of great products - two floors of solid wood furniture, real full leather chairs, ceramics and original artwork. Here you will find quality and stylish goods in a bright contemporary showroom and all at - suprisingly - affordable prices. The leather chairs come in a great selection of colours: strong and vibrant lime green or a striking funky orange, as well as rich earthy browns and a sedate black. Styling is Italian for the ‘Milano’ armchair with footstall , Classic in the ‘Tub’ chair and refined comfort in the dining chairs. Also proving very popular is their new ‘buffalo hide’ leather with a tactile finish. There are lots of ceramics to choose from too - a perfect Christmas gift! - whether it is handmade by local Kent potters in their studios or a colourful vase from far away shores. What is more, in addition to the on-going display of original, unique artwork at great prices, the first Gallery136 ‘Open Show’ is now running until Christmas. The ‘Open Show’ gives Kent artists an opportunity to display and sell their work when the demand is sure to be strong. Whether you go along to browse or buy, you will get the opportunity to choose your favourite work for the Open Show competition. The winner will be judged by you, the visiting public. Your vote will help choose the winner from a selection of abstract oil paintings, delicate watercolours or an emotive charcoal sketch amongst others.
All details and directions can be viewed on the gallery136.com website. Just like the showroom, this website is clear and easy to navigate. You can order most items on-line and with a large warehouse facility at the Tonbridge site, a lot of what is on offer is readily available from stock. The website has great pictures of most items on offer with clear straightforward pricing and lots of information including sizes etc. This coupled with an undoubted desire for customer satisfaction sounds like a recipe for success. If you cannot find what you are looking for, give them a call or send an email to specify exactly what it is that you want - as they regularly source new items. There are maps on the website for directions to both the Kent and London showrooms. Also a good tip click on the ’Keep me Updated’ tab and you won’t miss out on any sales promotions or new products that become available. When we arrived the atmosphere was relaxed and the staff were helpful but not pushy. There is plenty of free on-site parking, so all you have to worry about is deciding what to buy. I think it is this combination that makes a visit to Gallery136 such a pleasure. Hurry along and you may just be in time to order a new dining table and chairs for Christmas! To find out more about Gallery136 call, 01622 870100 or visit their website www.gallery136.com.

FINANCE
The Truth about your Money By Mike Robertson of MRA - Independent Financial Adviser’s Financial Planning Tips 1. Initiate a financial planning program now - for 2009. 2. Evaluate your current outgoing expenses, rectify outgoing costs quarterly. 3. Restore and rebalance your investment strategies. 4. Create a long term investment strategy, using sufficient diversification to reduce the risk of overexposure to any one particular asset class. 5. Combat the impact of rising inflation that can erode capital on deposit. Ways of Accessing Cash - create a positive move with an alternative solution Many analysts are forecasting that we are about to enter into a recession and as a consequence of which unemployment could potentially rise. In most areas the housing market is in decline and with credit being in short supply alternative sources of funds need to be found. For the over 50’s there is a source of funds in the form of the tax free cash sum from accumulated pension funds. Most private pensions allow policyholders to draw a lump sum of up to 25% of the value of the fund. This can currently be taken from age 50 although from 5th April 2010 the minimum age will rise to 55. It is not always necessary to draw a pension at the time when the tax free cash lump sum is taken. Instead the remainder of the fund can be allowed to continue to be invested according to the level of risk that the policyholder wishes to take. If an income is required this can be taken from the fund subject to an upper limit, which is reviewed every five years, or in the form of an annuity which can provide a guaranteed income for life. The income is normally paid net of UK tax. If the policyholder is trying to maximise the amount of cash in the short term they could take their entire first year’s entitlement to income from the fund as a single payment at the beginning of the year.
Potentially funds from which benefits may be taken early include personal pensions, stakeholder pensions, retirement annuities, final salary (defined benefit) schemes and additional voluntary contributions (AVCs and FSAVs). In the case of final salary schemes and AVCs the policyholder needs to have left the service of the employer with which they built up the benefits. The proceeds from several different pensions of all varieties can be brought together in a single arrangement in order to allow the withdrawal of tax free cash. Take a case where funds of say £80,000 have been accumulated in a variety of plans. Once they have been transferred, £20,000 can be taken as a tax free lump sum and potentially a further £3800 gross (£3040 net of basic rate tax) could be paid as an upfront income payment from the fund. This facility is not just useful to help clear debts. Potentially the capital released in this way could be used for such things as money towards a new business venture or even as a deposit for people wanting to take advantage of the drop in house prices by investing in properties which they could rent out, creating an unearned income. I have condensed this article in order to keep things simple. One should not forget that the primary purpose of pension funds is to provide an income when the policyholder or member no longer works. If benefits are taken early this will be at the expense of later income in retirement. Some private pensions provide guaranteed annuities, which can be forfeited if the policy is transferred elsewhere. Where benefits are transferred from a final salary pension scheme this could result in a smaller longer term retirement income and guarantees could be lost. These are just some of the issues that may need to be considered. Due to the complexities involved it is most important that advice is sought from a properly qualified pension’s specialist before entering into any transactions. MRA (Mike Robertson Associates Limited) if you are concerned about your finances and want to discuss any financial matters with regards to investments, savings, retirement or protection planning, don’t wait until the end of the year. We will help you to estimate the cost of the life you want to enjoy in years to come. GARDENS
Creative Lotus Flower Water Feature At the recent Sussex Guild Contemporary Craft Show, held at Pashley Manor Gardens, craftsman John Pomfrey revealed his latest creation to a highly receptive audience. John only finished his stunning Lotus Flower Water Feature on the day before set up. John said “It was worth all the long hours for the many encouraging comments made and interest expressed by visitors to the Show.” John wanted to create a metal water feature that was unusual and sculptural and that challenged his artistic and engineering skills. He decided that a lotus flower would be an ideal structure and it also because it symbolizes spiritual enlightenment. John said “I noticed many of the metal water features available tend to be “boxy” or simple spheres so I wanted to create an organic & pleasing curved shape and for the feature to have a “wow” factor.” He created the lotus flower from marine grade stainless steel. The water feature comes complete with two heads, the bell and fountain head so that different looks and sounds can be achieved depending on your mood. The lotus flower can be a stand alone feature, ideal for roof gardens and terraces, or can be incorporated into a pond. John has worked in the past with gold winning Chelsea Flower Show garden designers and so is used to creating unusual and challenging metal garden structures. He designs and makes ornate metal garden structures & bespoke metal furniture under the brand name of PMF Designs. For more information please call 01273 517333 or see www.pmfdesigns.co.uk.

The New & Luxurious Bentley Azure T Stylish and powerful, the new Bentley Azure T is the world’s most elegant convertible and destined to become a future classic. With unique Bentley ‘T’ styling cues reinforcing its sporting stance, the 500bhp Azure T delivers driver-focused performance with the ability to transport four adults in first-class, open-top luxury. The new Azure T, specified with the high performance version of Crewe’s iconic 6¾ litre V8 engine, is the latest in a line of Bentley models to bear the ‘T’ legend. The 1996 Continental coupe was the first modern Bentley ‘T’, followed in 2002 by the Arnage T, both flagship models with a distinctive sporting character and thunderous performance. The Azure’s already striking form is now enhanced by 20-inch 5-spoke wheels and tyres, ‘Le Mans’ front wing vents, dark tint matrix grille and a sculpted, retractable Flying ‘B’ mascot. For the performance-oriented Azure T, the twin-turbocharged V8 engine produces 500bhp and 1000 Nm of torque – an 11 per cent increase in power and a 14 per cent increase in torque over its 450bhp/875 Nm Azure stable mate. The famous Bentley wave of torque is even more prodigious than before and performance is significantly raised with a top speed of 179 mph (288 km/h) and a 0-60 mph time of just 5.2 seconds (0-100 km/h in 5.5 sec). Member of the Board, Sales and Marketing, Stuart McCullough comments: “The new Azure T reflects our passion for creating the world’s most exhilarating and prestigious convertibles that, true to the Bentley T tradition, blend sophistication with a powerful presence.”

MOTORING Porsche this week officially opens its Driving Experience Centre adjacent to the famous Silverstone Grand Prix circuit in Northamptonshire. The world-class centre allows every customer of a new Porsche in the UK and Ireland to receive expert tuition in their driving skills as well as the performance capabilities of their car as part of their purchase experience. Advances in modern automotive engineering and design mean today’s sports cars are more efficient, safer, faster and more complex than ever before. The level to which a driver understands the engine and chassis control systems on their car not only makes them a responsible road user, but also ultimately determines their overall level of driving satisfaction as well – and it is the thoroughbred nature of the driving experience which distinguishes a Porsche. One of the core philosophies of the Porsche research and development development team at Weissach, Germany, is to develop Porsche specific technology that enhances the connection between the driver, the car and the road. The new Driving Experience Centre at Silverstone offers Porsche customers with the opportunity to really understand the practical benefits of this engineering integrity that is the foundation of every Porsche. The Porsche Driving Experience Centre aims to build on these principles of driving safety and driving enjoyment by providing a formal, yet fun, environment for both Porsche owners and enthusiasts to have the opportunity to understand the engine performance and chassis dynamics attributes which differentiate a Porsche from its rivals. “This unique facility is a major investment for Porsche Cars GB and it will allow us to create a unique experience for customers that cannot be bettered in the UK market,” commented Andy Goss, Managing Director, Porsche Cars Great Britain. “The two core themes that run through each guest’s experience here are learning and choice. Learning about their car and their driving, but also learning about the world of Porsche so that they can make informed choices. Giving every Porsche new car customer a thorough understanding of what lies beneath the skin of their car will endorse their decision to buy the best.” The Porsche Driving Experience Centre offers a variety of track
94
configurations and surface conditions on which the potential of all Porsche road cars can be studied, together with, uniquely, the human performance level of drivers themselves. With a total length of 3.1km, the track has been designed to allow it to be split into four separate areas that can be used independently of each other or connected together to form a longer handling circuit. This environment will allow Porsche customers to be instructed through a variety of different situations in wet and dry conditions, as well as simulating ice and snow driving with the use of specially constructed surfaces. The variety of track environments encompasses a challenging off-road course, around which the versatility of the Cayenne can be demonstrated. Significant features include a 1:1 hill, a daunting stretch of water and a drive route across a mixture of rugged terrain. The Porsche Driving Experience Centre houses reception and display areas, a restaurant, cinema and the innovative Human Performance department. This leading edge sports laboratory is run by proven specialists and is accessible to both Porsche customers and racing drivers. Ordinarily, this type of facility would only be accessible to elite athletes. One-to-one instruction spans fitness assessments and guidance in techniques aimed at improving stamina, co-ordination and reaction times for drivers of all levels. The bespoke Centre building features distinctive Porsche architectural cues on the outside but, like the Porsche road cars themselves, employs the latest technology to significantly lower its energy demands, and hence its environmental impact. Visitors can see the entire Porsche facility from a roof top platform offering panoramic views. “We have based our Driving Experience Centre at Silverstone for the good practical reasons you would expect; location, access, facilities and international reputation,” added Andy Goss. “However, the relationship is uniquely special in that over the past 60 years Porsche and Silverstone have both stayed within their original ownership and remain fiercely independent.”

Even More Sophistication With Revised Volkswagen Phaeton Following its debut at the Paris Motor Show, Volkswagen has announced a number of revisions to the Phaeton luxury saloon with new features being added to the model range. Prices for the revised model, fitted with a 3.0-litre V6 TDI 240 PS engine, start at £44,235 RRP on the road. Inside, new touchscreen satellite navigation and climate control systems feature as standard as part of a redesigned centre console, alongside a refreshed instrument cluster and multifunction display. Side Scan blind-spot monitor is now available as an option on the Phaeton for the first time, building on the already extensive list of safety equipment fitted to the vehicle. This technology, currently available on the Touareg, monitors the area next to the vehicle and acts as a lane changing aid with an audible alert and a small warning lamp in the wing mirrors to warn of the danger of collision. Other options new to the Phaeton are a rear-view camera and the powerful 1,000-watt Dynaudio soundpack, which includes a 12-channel digital amplifier and 12 speakers. Subtle design tweaks have also been made to the exterior, including a revised front grille featuring a three-dimensional Volkswagen roundel. A range of new metallic paint finishes and three new alloy wheels, in 17-, 18- and 19-inch designs, have also been added. The Phaeton is available with a 3.0-litre V6 TDI 240 PS with DPF (diesel particulate filter) or 6.0-litre W12 450 PS petrol engine. All models have standard 4MOTION four-wheel drive and are available
with a long wheelbase, giving 12 cm additional rear legroom. The 3.0litre V6 TDI is now offered with a standard wheelbase. The revised Phaeton is available to order now, with new cars arriving in the UK in January 2009.
New Style, Better MPG & Less CO2 For Citroën C1 Citroën have announced first details of changes to the C1 that will give the chic, ultra-economical city-car new exterior styling, even better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions together with a number of other improvements, including an upgraded interior. The C1’s exterior has been given a smart upgrade with changes to the car’s front end, complementing the looks of the recently updated C2. There are new wheels and trims whilst inside there are new upholstery and materials.
Improving the car’s class-topping environmental and economical credentials, the nippy 1.0i 68hp petrol engine is now the lowest CO2 emitting petrol powered car currently on sale in the UK, boasting lowered CO2 emissions of just 106g/km (-2.7%), and a combined-cycle fuel consumption figure of 62.8mpg (+2.1%). This upgrade means that, in just a few months, Citroën has either revised or completely renewed the C1, C2, C4, C5 as well as the Berlingo Multispace. The new look C1 is set to go on sale early in 2009 when further details and prices will be announced.

MOTORING
The Mazda6 Is Named Scotland's ‘Best Family Car’ The Association of Scottish Motoring Writers (ASMW) has named the Mazda6 ‘Best Family Car’ in its Scottish Car of the Year Awards 2008, commenting that, 'Rarely has a car ticked all the right boxes when it comes to quality, refinement, and reliability… Mazda has more than met the ambitions of many motorists’. Now in its 11th year, the Scottish Car of the Year is judged by members of the ASMW and more than 50 new models, launched during the past 12 months, were in contention for a 2008 accolade, awarded across eight categories. "The family car sector has come on leaps and bounds in recent years," commented Bill Caven, President of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers. "The quality of the vehicles available has risen dramatically as the manufacturers strive to offer something special. All of which is good news for those families seeking a solid all round transporter. "Mazda has more than met the ambitions of many motorists following the introduction of its all-new Mazda6." Mazda6 impressed the ASMW judges, with the panel selecting it above family car rivals Honda Accord, Mitsubishi Lancer, Citroën C5, Kia pro'ceed, Ford Focus, Dodge Avenger and Peugeot 308. Bill Caven added: "Not only does the Mazda6 look rather spectacular, but it also performs to the same high standard of cars costing considerably more." Mazda UK managing director Jeremy Thomson added: “We are truly delighted that the Mazda6 has been named Scottish Car of the Year’s ‘Best Family Car’. This 2008 award is further confirmation that the allnew Mazda6 continues to attract family buyers thanks to its people and luggage carrying abilities and very competitive CO2 emissions levels, ideal for family motoring needs. "The new Mazda6 has built upon the original model’s sportiness and design flair while the new bodyshells, which are significantly stiffer as well as lighter, mean that both the hatchback and the estate models deliver even more responsive handling." 98
With a comprehensive range of 25 derivatives, including 10 diesels and nine estates, five equipment levels, four engine choices and a broad £7,020 price span, it’s not surprising that the Mazda6 is one of the company’s best-selling models. The Mazda6 is priced from £15,110 (OTR) for the Mazda6 1.8 5dr S model up to £22,130 (OTR) for the 2.0 Estate Sports Luxury model. Until 31 December 2008, Mazda is offering the new Mazda Service Plan (valid for the first three annual services), free of charge to customers who purchase a Mazda6. Customers can also take advantage of two typical 6.9% APR* finance offers on all models – Hire Purchase with a 20% minimum deposit over three years, or a Mazda MultiOption (PCP) plan also over three years. Buyers who order a new Mazda6 Sport or SL model can specify a ‘Smart Nav’ (worth £700 as a Mazda accessory) free of charge. These offers are available for retail sales only, until 31 December 2008.
