Charles Clark & Co are shortly to launch two East Sussex farms which are coming on to the market for the first time in 100 years. Moat Farm, Mayfield, was last sold by public auction on 14th June 1901 at which time the current vendors’ family, had already lived and farmed there as tenants since at least 1881, whilst Hale Farm, Chiddingly, comes on to the market for the first time since 1914. Moat Farm is one of the few remaining typical traditional unspoilt Wealden farms which rarely come on to the market- either nowadays or even, it seems, in 1901 when the auction catalogue described the property as “most compact, and forms one of those small holdings so greatly in demand and so difficult to secure at the present time”. With fine views to the pretty village of Mayfield the traditional Sussex farmhouse (unlisted) believed to date back to the early 17th century is now in need of modernisation . The internal accommodation retains many architectural features of the period including extensive oak beaming and inglenook fireplaces, and comprises a kitchen, utility area, bathroom, dining room and sitting room with 3 large bedrooms on the first floor, one with dressing room suitable for a child’s bedroom. There is ample attic storage space suitable for conversion in to additional accommodation subject to planning permission. Outside
there is a brick and tile outhouse and traditional gardens. The land is typical of the High Weald being undulating pasture and fronts along its entire southern boundary on to the River Rother. Moat Farm extends in all to about 42 acres and a guide price of £850,000 is being quoted. Hale Farm is also nestled in the Sussex Weald within the Parish of Chiddingly, and comprises a beautiful 7 bedroom Grade II Listed property and currently accommodates two branches of the same family in addition to a Bed & Breakfast enterprise. Adjacent to the farmhouse lies a range of traditional buildings including a Sussex Barn and an old cow byre. Both buildings have in the past had planning permission for residential use (now lapsed). Like Moat Farm, Hale Farm also has a river running practically the full length of one boundary, in this case the River Bull meanders along the eastern boundary. A cross-country course with over 100 jumps has been established over the 66 acres. So not only has Hale Farm been home to generations of the same family but has shown that it is capable of providing an additional income through diversification. Hale Farm is being offered to the market at a guide price of £2 million. The launch of Moat Farm and Hale Farm falls hard on the heels of two other traditional farms again on the market for the first time in many years. Taylors Farm, Broad Oak last sold over 45 years ago and comprises a traditional residential and mixed grassland/amenity farm of some 67 acres set in a secluded location at the end of a long private driveway and comprising a 4 bedroom period farmhouse dating from the mid 18th century., range of traditional and modern buildings including a small period barn, loose boxes, hay barn and workshop and is on the market at a guide price of £1 million together with joint agents Knight Frank. Orchard Farm, Blackboys, is a traditional residential and agricultural smallholding, again set at the end of a long private drive comprising a 3 bedroom 17th century farmhouse in need of some modernisation set in cottage style gardens. There are some useful outbuildings with land all down to pasture interspersed with ponds and extends to 15.75 acres. Last sold over 25 years ago Charles Clark & Co are quoting a guide price of £800,000 - £850,000. If you would like to find out more or arrange a viewing you can call Charles Clark & Co on 01435 864455. 5

Hopping Across The Channel! By Roger Paine With Spring just around the corner, what better time to think about realizing the dream that many of us cherish, that of owning a property in France? Although the current economic downturn is worldwide and property prices may now, for some, be more affordable here than they were six months ago, the attraction of La Belle France does not go away. Paris has the reputation of being the most romantic city on earth. A city for lovers. Ella Fitzgerald singing “April in Paris” made the song a hit in the 1930’s, Doris Day was equally successful in the film of the same name in the 1950’s. But is there still romance to be found in owning property there ? Or in any of the other readily accessible areas which lie between the lovers’ city and La Manche, the English Channel ? Most estimates put the number of British who own property in France at over half a million. The country has an exceptionally diverse economy with agriculture employing some 5% of the country’s workforce. Yet the dream of buying and renovating a remote and dilapidated farmhouse, documented in countless books and television programmes, has lost none of its original appeal, despite the days of £10,000 cottages having all but disappeared. Today, with Eurostar and the Channel Tunnel, plus ferries from Dover, Portsmouth and Southampton sailing frequently to Calais, Boulogne, Cherbourg, Le Havre and St Malo, the northern regions of France, as well as its capital city, seem that much closer to home. A train journey from London on a Friday evening could find you three hours later in Paris dining onboard un bateau-mouche on the River Seine, before returning to your own apartment in the Marais district for le weekend. The British make up about 12% of foreigners buying in Paris with the majority being owner-occupiers buying for leisure or weekend breaks. Very often they will be 40 to 50 year olds looking not so much for capital growth or yield, but more for the benefits to their children whom they want to spend time in the city, learning the language and absorbing
12
the culture. The most favoured areas are the 6th and 7th arrondissements, along with the 1st and 2nd districts - the social and historical hub of the city. It is worth remembering, however, that there is an obsession in France with price per square metre whereas in this country we set much store, and value, by the number of bedrooms. There are several well-established companies who specialize in selling properties in France for those preparing for their retirement and planning to live there permanently. In most cases, this decision has been taken long ago and once their house here is sold, they will use the proceeds to buy in France. The northern departements such as Manche, Calvados, Somme and Seine-Maritime are always popular as it is extremely easy for homeowners to return to visit family and friends, in the same way they are well situated to have visitors from Britain. But before embarking on the realization of your dream, time spent on reconnaissance is never wasted. The house, or apartment, that may have seemed idyllic after the third glass of vin rouge and a snoozeinducing blanquette or bourguignon on la terrasse in the summer, may have all sorts of unforeseen drawbacks when seen on a rainy day in March. It is also worth doing your homework in order to understand some of the phrases frequently used by a French estate agent, agent immobilier, and the notaire, a qualified French national specialising in property, responsible for drawing up contracts, undertaking searches etc. In particular compromis de vente, an initial legal contract signed by both parties and legally binding, and conditions suspensives, ‘get-out’ clauses, covered by the notaire, in case of rights-of-way issues, surveys etc. going wrong. Those who aspire to hop across the Channel might also remember that the best way of meeting your new neighbours is to hold a housewarming party, pendre la cremaillere!

Added to this is the wonderful bonus of continental style ‘al fresco’ eating and drinking in warmer weather, and enjoying the great programme of music and entertainment on the Pantiles. Now celebrating its fifth year, Woods, which is situated near the bandstand, offers great value for money, using local suppliers and ingredients to produce seasonal menus, and with a flexible approach which gives customers a feeling of freedom of choice. The menus offer a clever combination of contemporary and comfort food. Brunch is served all week, and advance booking is advisable for the ever popular Sunday Roast. A seasonal dinner is also available at Woods, with a great value set dinner at £9.95, as well as an a la carte menu. It’s also a great venue to hold a dinner party, and Woods offer a seasonal dinner party menu for parties of 10 or more, which they can also tailor to meet your specific requirements. The upstairs bar is also a great venue for parties of up to 60 people, with canapé and buffets available for your guests. A wonderful, slightly Bohemian ambience, great location and an 23

Royall New Collection for Spring 2009 It has been a busy year at Royall Fine Art. Having celebrated 25 years in business in 2008 with four major exhibitions on show in the gallery during the year,
St John Rosse. A Magical Beach
2009 has begun at the same pace with another three in the planning. Exhibitions here are extensive affairs with mixed shows comprising of, typically, 150 new works by painters, sculptors and decorative artists from all over the country and one-man shows with up to 100 paintings produced especially over a 12-18 month period. In the intervening times the gallery has one of the biggest and most varied ranges of work in the country. Whilst 2009 will undoubtedly be difficult for many businesses the partners, Trevor and Nicola Royall, say that historically the art trade weathers economic recessions well and investments made in originals have continued to rise over the past 25 years and although this may not be the main reason that most clients purchase a work of art it is comforting to know that the prices hold up well over the long term. Royall Fine Art’s new collection for Spring 2009 will go be show from Saturday 25th April with works by established gallery artists and new arrivals contact the gallery for further details or illustrated brochure. THE PANTILES The Pantiles. It’s the jewel in the crown of Royal Tunbridge Wells and in the past year its new owners have got out their polishing cloths to bring back some sparkle. The pretty colonnade is well loved by locals and visitors alike for its rich history and architectural calm, yet most agree its potential is still to be fully realised. Thankfully, one year on since Targetfollow Ltd acquired ownership of the Upper Pantiles, bringing the whole area including the Lower Pantiles, The Corn Exchange and The Commons into its portfolio, all signs suggest that The Pantiles’ renaissance stays on course. Targetfollow has big ambitions for The Pantiles and has proposed extensive plans to rejuvenate the area to make it a leading tourist destination. Key proposals include turning the Linden Park car park into shops and flats, attracting a boutique hotel and signature restaurant into the area, and vast public realm improvements. “The strategy is currently undergoing consultation with the public and the Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and we look forward to progressing plans once approved,” said head of marketing for Targetfollow, Adrian Goldney. More to enjoy The Pantiles is the perfect place to indulge the senses - the shopping is more than just boutique, it’s luxury; the pavement café culture offers delicious food from around the world and a classy ambience. It’s also becoming a hot spot for entertainment, making it the ideal place to relax for hours on end. Good music (especially when enjoyed over good food with good friends) is one of life’s greatest pleasures and The Pantiles is now abuzz with more live music than ever before. Last year The Pantiles launched a summer long season of live jazz on the bandstand with eleven acts performing everything from smooth saxophone to big band swing and upbeat Latin jazz on Thursday nights. The season was incredibly popular with standing room only some nights and even some pavement dancing! The jazz season will return in summer 2009, followed by the annual Local & Live musical festival which last year drew record crowds of more than 6,500 people over late August bank holiday weekend. It promises four days of original, local, acoustic music – all set among the
beautiful elegance of The Pantiles and hopefully, the summer sun. Throughout the year there’ll be musical genres for all tastes including light opera, modern pop, folk and brass bands to name a few. The Pantiles offers adult sophistication, but you might be surprised to discover the many activities now on offer for the children. Craft workshops, cookie decorating, circus lessons and afternoon story telling are just some of the events than have been running during the school holidays, with special events planned for Easter, Halloween and of course, Christmas. The children can play, while parents treat themselves to a cup of coffee and a warm home made muffin. Shopping for something special In the modern retail world it’s rare to find such a boutique collection of shops as you’ll enjoy at The Pantiles. Forget fast food, budget outlet stores and the bright lights of shopping malls – shopping at The Pantiles is all about enjoying the experience, and discovering something special. The Pantiles has everything to make your home a haven with interiors, antiques, garden and kitchen ware, designer fabrics and much more. And, when it comes to fine and modern art, The Pantiles is one of the south east’s premier destinations, with five local galleries exhibiting diverse works from some renowned artists, but without the London price tag. The latest shop to open in The Pantiles is the family-run home ware store, Wild Asparagus. Inside you’ll find pretty prints and lovely decorative items. And, in true bespoke style, Wild Asparagus imports and hand paints its very own French chandeliers which are sure to make a statement in any room. Rejuvenation strategy on track With a fabulous events programme underway, new stores opening and a bold rejuvenation strategy in the pipeline, the future of The Pantiles looks bright. Don’t miss out! To stay up-to-date with all of the events and special offers at The Pantiles, sign up for its regular email newsletter at www.thepantilesonline.co.uk.

ANTIQUES, ART & AUCTIONS M Jewellers are focussing on Pearls this spring. They have a large selection of all types of pearl jewellery in stock-and at prices to suit all. Owners Michael and Madelaine Kearton have noticed that pearls consistently sell well. Madelaine says "This is because Pearls are one of the classic jewellery items, whether it is a single row of Pearls or stud earrings. There are also many modern variations, such as being set in white gold with Diamonds or the different shapes and colours of the freshwater pearls." But what are the different types of Pearl? Michael, a qualified gemmologist, takes up the story "Pearls a hundred years ago or before were natural in as much as they were pulled from Oysters from the sea bed by young Japanese diving girls called 'Amas'. As people were becoming more aware of the health implications to the Amas by diving down great depths,an innovation was to change the pearl world forever. In Japan in the early 1900s the techniques to produce cultured pearls were being perfected. Whereas in nature a grain of sand gets into the oyster and irritates it so making the oyster secrete layers of nacre over it and forming a pearl, in the cultured process man inserts a bead made from mother of pearl into
the oyster instead. The Oyster is put back into the sea and three years later it is removed and opened and the bead is transformed into a pearl. The size is also able to be controlled and pearls were produced in far bigger amounts than ever before. " The latest developments in pearl production is the introduction of the Chinese freshwater pearl. These are formed using a freshwater mussel instead of the saltwater oyster They have been improved continually from their original 'rice crispie' look to oval and button shapes and the rounder shapes we are seeing now. With an ever better lustre and array of colours, they have given the cultured pearls some real competition recently - and wider choice to the customer. Larger pearls have also been popular, particularly the South Sea Tahitian pearls , as pictured, which range in size from 7-8.00 mm upwards and in a number of natural colours. To know more about pearls, have your own assessed, valued, rethreaded or to view the M Jewellers pearl collection please call into the shop at 121 South Street , Eastbourne or call Michael on 01323 430304.

Hastings Antiques Centre - Cornucopia of Treasures Just a stone’s throw from the Promenade at St. Leonards-on-Sea is the veritable cornucopia of antiques known as the Hastings Antique Centre. Arranged over three floors, you will enjoy browsing in this delightful and slightly eccentric shop, where nothing is priced and is packed to the gunnels with fine furniture. The shop contains silver, Mirrors, light fittings and sporting parapheralia. From where I am on the ground floor I can see armouries from Normandy, English colonial ivory, inlaid Georgian chairs and the most enticing Austrian art nouveau wedding chest. If its games that you’re interested in then come down and have a look at a very rare 1920’s French football table. Or there is a life size Victorian horse from a saddle shop in Scotland, made from carved wood and papier- mache- an ideal feature for a hallway. So come and see for yourself but leave plenty of time for browsing, and check out some of the best chandeliers, jewellery, glassware and interesting useful furniture. I am sure you will be impressed. ANTIQUES, ART & AUCTIONS
The Process of Art, with Liz Garnett Since we last wrote about Liz Garnett in our August 2008 issue she has been busy rushing around the South East delivering her pictures to exhibitions. The Christmas period was particularly busy with four exhibitions including one in London. In fact she had to turn down some offers of exhibitions as she was running out of framed work to exhibit! Liz’s art photography focuses on traditional methods. She continues to produce images of flowers and experiment further with different films and processes. Each film has a different quality and one of the joys of working with film is anticipating the results. Not only is there a variation in colour but also in grain size. In her flower photographs, lighting also plays an important part in the creative process: the images are shot in a studio setting which enables Liz to have more control over lighting and background. Another traditional photographic process that Liz practices is the Emulsion Lift, also known as the Polaroid Lift as is undertaken using Polaroid instant film. The top layer of a specialist professional photographic print is soaked off its backing paper and then placed onto another material. In Liz’s case she prefers to place the emulsion onto watercolour paper - the edges of the emulsion can then be manipulated to produce interesting effects. The emulsion is very fragile when it is wet and can easily tear.
As things quieten down on the exhibition front, Liz has been raising the profile of her work internationally by setting up an internet shop on Etsy. Etsy is an international marketplace for art and craft and has been up and running since 2005. Buyers have an easier hunt for art and craft than they would with a Google search. Etsy has over 200,000 sellers and 1.8 million members and the estimated income for 2008 was $87,000. This is a huge and growing marketplace with a great deal of help and support for new and existing sellers. Liz will be demonstrating the Emulsion Lift process at her open studio as part of South East Open Studios this June. She will also have her large and medium format cameras on display and be happy to explain how they work. For details of the opening times of her studio log on to www.seos-art.org Further information about Liz and her work can be found on her website: www.lizgarnett.com and her internet shop is at: http://lizgarnett.etsy.com, alternatively call 01424 775650.

Foodie heaven unearthed in Kent Horsmonden Farmers’ Market was the brain child of three women who believed that a well run Farmers’ Market could be just the thing to revitalise a community while offering fair returns for producers and healthy local food for all at reasonable prices. After almost three years of operation, its founders, Liz Taylor, Pippa Ankjaer and Mary Moffat believed they have proved their point.
The aim of the market all along has been to present a complete alternative for your shopping. “The idea is that you can feed your family from Horsmonden Farmers’ Market,” says Liz Taylor. “We’ve got the whole range, bread, meat, poultry, eggs, fruit and vegetables. We’ve got juice and organic products, pies and pastries, soups and cheeses. There’s even fish, caught not far away in the English Channel.”
“We’ve really achieved what we set out to do,” says Liz Taylor. “Horsmonden Farmers’ Market gives local farmers a great opportunity to sell their produce without having to send it miles away to a supermarket that’s cut the price to the bone.
The market has continued to be held fortnightly on a Friday morning, running from 9 am to 12 noon.
That means it helps to preserve the traditional Kent countryside and improve the quality of life of everyone who lives in the county. It gives local people a chance to buy high quality local food at reasonable prices and it has helped bring more life into the community. The three women developed the farmers’ market plan as a potential answer to a number of concerns. “I started off by thinking about food miles,” says Liz Taylor. “It just seems ridiculous that we live in the middle of some of the most productive agriculture in the world and yet so much of our food comes from miles away. We’d ended up with a situation in which farmers could not get a decent return and local people could not buy local food anywhere.” “Too many of Kent’s villages had ended up turning into ghost towns as their shops closed,” she says. “Without shops they are little more than commuter dormitories, with no chance for those without transport, especially many older people, to buy food.”
The Cock Inn
The market is also doing its job in bringing more life into the local community. “You can sit and have tea and cake and a chat,” she says. “It brings people together.” Earlier in the year, the market helped Horsmonden Primary School to run a farmhouse breakfast as part of an annual event promoted by the South East Food and Farming Group. “Horsmonden Farmers’ Market is all about putting back a sense of community,” says Liz Taylor. “In a county where many people have moved in from outside and even more live well away from where they were brought up, it’s great for children to understand the traditions and strengths of their area.” Liz Taylor believes that the farmers’ market captures the economic spirit of the times. “There may not be the deep cuts on a few items that you get from supermarkets trying to grab headlines, but everything you can buy here is good value,” she says. “You don’t have to pay for it to be driven round the country on a supermarket lorry and you don’t have to pay for a car, road tax and petrol to buy it. It’s green and it’s good value.”

Lamb Rump with Jerusalem Artichoke Puree and Redcurrant Gravy Rump of lamb is cheaper than best end but just as tender and tasty. Jerusalem Artichokes are in season and subtle enough in flavour to complement the lamb beautifully. Buy Kent lamb from Speaights Butcher in Chapel Place, Tunbridge Wells. Serves 4 2 or 3 Lamb Rumps – sliced thickly 1.5 kg Jerusalem Artichokes 700ml Milk 700ml Chicken Stock Sprig Rosemary 200ml Red Wine 200ml Beef Stock Dessert spoon of Redcurrant Jelly Double Cream Knob Butter Peel the artichokes, place in saucepan and cover with milk and chicken stock. Add rosemary, bring to the boil and cook for 15mins until tender. Keep to one side in the liquor. Place a frying pan on a high heat, add a splash of vegetable or rape seed oil, fry the seasoned lamb for 3 mins on each side and place in low oven to keep warm. Pour off the fat, add the red wine and reduce to a ¼ add the beef stock and redcurrant jelly and reduce until the sauce starts to thicken and become slightly sticky. Meanwhile take the artichokes out of the liquor, place in a food processor with a dash of cream and the butter, season and blend to a puree. Place the puree on each plate, put the lamb on the puree and pour over the sauce, serve with purple sprouting or baby stems. To find out more about Woods you can call them on 01892 614411.
New Chimney House Food Pub Opens In Seven Dials The brand new Chimney House food pub at Seven Dials was opened last week by Andrew and Helen Coggings, owners of the Preston Park Tavern in Fiveways, and promises to be another gastronomic success. To those in the know, the Preston Park Tavern is one of the best kept secrets in the city – offering delicious, freshly-cooked, seasonal food, it has a great atmosphere reminiscent of some of the best London gastropubs. The Coggings have brought across some of the best aspects of the Preston Park Tavern to the Chimney House – including stylish, low key decor, delicious food based on local, seasonal ingredients and excellent value for money for quality modern British food. “At the Chimney House we have refurbished it to bring out the Victorian cozyness of the pub and brought in a great new chef, George Stenning, who has created a wholesome and hearty winter menu, changing weekly to use seasonal ingredients.” The Chimney House has something for almost everyone, with a dinner menu which always has at least two fish, two vegetarian and two meat main courses, using top quality locally-caught fish and Sussex-grown raw ingredients. Lunch includes lighter dishes including soup and sandwiches as well as hearty pies and stews with a bowl of bread or hand cut chips.
The chef makes everything with care from scratch every day, with an attention to detail that ensures freshness and quality. Kids are also well catered for with a great two-course menu and options that will appeal to them, such as real fish goujons, chips and peas – all freshly made from real food. To book telephone 01273 556708. The Chimney House is at 28 Upper Hamilton Road, Seven Dials. 41

The Story Behind The Cover - At South Coast Studios Our make-up artist Jenny Slungaard trained in California, with Troy Shook, who was Anna Nicole's make-up artist, and Head Trainer for MAC. She says that she particularly loves working on editorial shoots and fashion shows, and says she 'lives and breathes' fashion. Jenny says that as our model Stephanie has such delicate features, large eyes and beautiful skin, that she went for a 'beauty editorial' look, with strong eye make-up and glowing soft skin - by firstly preparing Stephanie's skin with moisturiser, allowing it to have fully sunk in before going to work on her face.
Jenny then added a sweep of pinky peach blusher to Stephanie's cheeks, and to finish the look, she lined her lips with a neutral lipliner. (MAC Subculture), with a touch of a peach coloured lipgloss.
South Coast Studios Photographer Latiff, (who took the cover shot), originates from Indonesia. He loved Photography from an early age, and when he acquired his first camera he spent hours photographing everything from the beautiful skies of Indonesia to the wonderful wildlife.
She then covered the eyelids in a very small amount of neutral eye base (MAC eye paint in 'Untitled' is great for that, she says). Next, she covered the lid and just above the socket with an oyster coloured eyeshadow (MAC eyeshadow in Grain), she worked a brown, shimmery shadow along the crease line concentrating on the outer corner of the eye. (MAC eyeshadow in Era works nicely on all skin colours). She then lines Stephanie's eyes with a soft purple kohl pencil (MAC kohl pencil in Permaplum), and went over the kohl with a purple shadow to set the line and add real contrast with the brown shadow. (MAC eyeshadow in Fertile). She then curled Stephanie's eyelashes and applied black mascara to both the top and bottom lashes before applying false eyelashes for that real 'doe-eyed' look. Finally, Jenny says she defined here eyebrows using a mid brown eyeshadow applied with an angled brush. Jenny then applied a sheer liquid foundation on Stephanie's skin, and used MAC face and body foundation with a foundation brush to ensure an even application. She then added a peachy pink highlighter to the cheekbone (Benefit High Beam is a make up essential), and a light dusting of translucent powder to set the makeup.
It was then that he decided that he should make photography his living, and came over to England to do just that. His talent was quickly recognised by the Plough Studios, who offered him a job immediately, and he has never looked back. He went on to work for advertising campaigns for Saatchi & Saatchi, Ogilvy & Mather, Ted Bates, and J Walter Thompson. Latiff became an established and renowned photographer, and has since travelled the world shooting fashion projects and shows, and advertising campaigns in as far away places as New Zealand, India, Thailand, Singapore, Bali and Malaysia shooting for many top fashion houses and production companies. He finally settling in England, and joined South Coast Studios. South Coast Studios Photographer Joao Unzer, (who took the studio shots), was born in Sao Paulo in Brazil. In the last four years Joao has worked for Leo Burnett and Arc Worldwide Advertising Agencies as an Art Director. He now resides in London, and enjoys working with Latiff as his Assistant. They are both greatly looking forward to going to London Fashion Week to shoot behind the scenes at some of the shows. The clothes for this shoot, including the cover shot dress was supplied by The Italian Wardrobe you can call them on 01892 514143. If you would like a make over or a Front Cover photo shoot please contact Amanda at South Coast Studios on 01424 736440.

Leading The Way In Lighting Boasting over 30,000 sq.ft. of manufacturing space, state of the art facilities and interior design to rival that of the larger corporations, the new ACDC headquarters certainly seem to be providing an illuminating experience for the people of Barrowford and the surrounding areas. In fact, the new premises have quite literally become a major talking point in the area, thanks to some pretty impressive exterior lighting design. Serving as a showcase for the company’s industry-leading LED and Cold Cathode lighting solutions, the newly christened Innovation Works seems to be drawing positive comments from far and wide. Moreover, the increased visibility for ACDC also seems to be having another dramatic effect - introducing the wider world to exactly what can be created with the latest innovations in LED and Cold Cathode lighting. Designed and conceived largely by the team of directors at ACDC and with the majority of the construction and lighting work being carried out by local contractors and suppliers - with a great deal of help from enthusiastic ACDC employees, the new premises project was very much a ‘local’ enterprise, which has certainly generated an outstanding end result! And, although ACDC has only moved literally a ‘stones-throw’ away from its former premises in Pasture Lane, the two sites could not be more different. With increased manufacturing, warehousing and office
72
space along with superb facilities, the new building reflects the company’s current position in the market as well as mirroring its ambitious vision for the future. Lit entirely with ACDC products, including the new award winning Evolution LED architectural recessed downlighter, Innovation Works leads the way for the Barrowford based manufacturer that is looking to further establish its reputation for pushing the boundaries of advancement in both Cold Cathode and LED lighting technology. Managing Director, Gareth Frankland commented: “We are all immensely proud of our new home and feel that it provides a platform for development going forwards. And, whilst we never doubted the effect that our exterior lighting would have on the building, we were not prepared for the level of excitement that it has created both in the local area and with the customers who have already visited the new premises.” And, with such praiseworthy comments from being heaped on the new premises, it is no wonder that ACDC is looking to showcase Innovation Works to the industry with a series of factory visits, launch parties and general celebration events, aimed at the company’s network of distributors, key accounts and customers throughout the year. Levick Jorgensen - Hand Crafted and Local Levick Jorgensen is a refreshing company producing hand crafted kitchens using natural materials. Their workshops, showroom and design studio are housed in a converted warehouse in Uckfield, East Sussex. “It is a big advantage for our clients to have an operation housed under one roof” says proprieter Nathan Levick, who designs all the kitchens and furniture in a well equipped studio above the showroom. “Our kitchens are produced in house, ensuring an efficient transition from design to completed kitchen. It is quite usual for clients to come in at various stages to see their kitchen being made.” The workshop itself is neat, tidy and smells of timber. Doors are assembled with traditional mortice and tenon joints. Drawers are dovetailed. “Our workforce is made up of local craftsmen and cabinet makers”, says Christine Levick, Nathan’s partner and co-founder of the business fifteen years ago. “We do not compromise in the manufacture of our kitchens,” she adds, “even our carcasses are made here using only solid timber. Working traditionally we find that integrated appliances and internal wirework such as corner optimisers work much better because they are housed in a strong rigid framework”. The show room is uncluttered and infused with the enthusiasm and quality which features throughout the business. Painted displays are shown alongside kitchens in Oak and Pine made in the distinctive Levick Jorgensen style which blends sophistication with hand crafted quality. Nathan and Christine have gathered a selection of natural floors and wall tiles chosen to complement their kitchens, which are all on

show and available through Levick Jorgensen. An impressive larder cupboard with granite cold shelves and an ingenious bottle storage system stands near a large island with an array of storage cupboards and a luxurious Teak top. “We are often asked to design and make individual items to complement an existing kitchen,” enthuses Nathan, “but it is most usual for us to carry out a complete kitchen renovation. We have a dedicated team of associated tradesman for all building and preparation work, right through to the final coats of paint applied to a finished kitchen.” For more information about Levick Jorgensen visit their website www.levickjorgensen.com or showroom at 57 Framfield Road, Uckfield, East Sussex - 01825 766048

Fore! By Roger Paine When, as a young naval officer, I was appointed to the staff of the Captain Fishery Protection Squadron based at South Queensferry near Edinburgh in Scotland my father, in view of the location of my new posting, felt it was the ideal time to give me his golf clubs. A taxi from Edinburgh Waverley station took me to the base located on the south bank of the River Forth. As we pulled up outside the small wardroom mess the hall porter came out to help. “I’ll take these, sir,” he said in a deep Scottish brogue indicating my bags and suitcases, ”you’ll be wanting to carry yon clubs yerself!” Swinging my golf bag nonchantly over my shoulder, although I had never even held a club let alone tried to hit a golf ball, I followed the porter towards the doors into the mess. These were double plate glass doors and with my briefcase in one hand and my golf clubs over my shoulder I was not used to negotiating such entrances. With my free hand and shoulder I pushed myself awkwardly through the doors and into the hallway. As I looked around for the porter one of the glass doors swung back and hit the unprotected steel club heads protruding from my bag. With a sound like a thunderclap the glass door disintegrated into a thousand pieces leaving only the frame and some ugly jagged shards! I stood aghast and unable to move.
was unable to play that day, slowed to a sedate pace as we passed wide fairways and manicured greens. Overwhelmed with a sense of utter inadequacy I shrank into the leather upholstery. With a crunch of gravel the car came to a halt and the driver held open the door before deferentially handing over my clubs. “Enjoy your game, sir”, he said touching his cap, “the captain will be sorry not to be playing with you”. I smiled politely. “He won’t”, I said under my breath. “when he hears how bad I am!” The only thing to do, I decided, was to act like a golfer. But never having been to a golf club before I did not really know what this entailed. I went up the steps to the main entrance. Inside the vestibule sat a uniformed attendant. “I’m here to play golf”, I announced, “for the Navy against the Edinburgh Merchants”. He looked down at a list on his desk. “Aye, sir, they’re teeing off at two o’clock. You’ll want to get yourself changed”. He could sense my puzzlement at this last remark as ‘changed’ indicated that one had something to ‘change’ into.
Immediately the old retainer reappeared and despite my repeated apologies he waved them away saying, ”Och, dinna worry yerself, sir, that was yer golf clubs that did it so it’s nae a problem”. I agreed it was my clubs that did the actual damage but it was my own clumsiness which was to blame. Despite my protestations the porter was adamant. “The Commander”, he whispered conspiratorially, referring to the president of the wardroom mess, “will nae worry aboot it when he knows you’re a golfer!” “But I’m not a golfer!”, I spluttered helplessly. “Aye, sir”, he replied giving me a broad wink, “that’s what they all say!” His assumption, however, was correct. The commander waved away my attempts to shoulder the blame insisting, “As you’re a golfer, Roger, we’ll turn a blind eye to the damage. The mess could do with another golfer for we play society matches here every week and your experience will be useful. Hope you’ll be able to turn out next Wednesday when we play the Edinburgh Merchants. We want to put out a strong team”. A tarmacadamed road led through magnificently landscaped parkland to the former mansion which was now the clubhouse of the golf course where we were playing. Captain Fishery Protection’s official chauffeurdriven limousine, which the captain had insisted that I should use as he 86
I pushed open the door marked “Gentlemen’s Changing” and went inside. “Ah, there you are, Roger”, said a fellow officer, “better get yourself changed!” It soon became apparent that a golfer’s playing ‘kit’ was a sort of designer leisure wear that could just as easily be worn on, or off, a golf course Accordingly I took off my blazer and tie and hung them on a hook, I then opened the top button of my shirt. In an instant, it appeared, I was ready. But not wishing to appear too keen I busied myself by re-hanging my jacket a couple of times, taking off my trousers then putting them back on again, and smoothing out my tie. I also took off the shoes I was wearing - fortunately brown brogues stared at them hard for a minute or two, fiddled with the laces, and then put them back on. It was a complete charade intended solely to give the appearance of ‘changing’ and to divert any attention away from the fact that I was not a golfer and had no proper golfing clothes. At last I felt confident enough to stand up. “All set, Roge?”, asked our team captain, “We’re playing fourballs and you’re paired with Jim here!”. “Good” I replied, not knowing what he meant but shaking Jim’s hand firmly as he introduced himself. “The first is a par 4, dog leg to the left”, said my playing partner. I nodded. It was all total gobbledegook to me but there was no turning back. I watched the other players closely. Do exactly as they do I repeated over and over again to myself as I placed my ball carefully on the peg tee and swung my driver down from over my shoulder. There was a satisfactory ‘ping’ and the ball flew high and straight down the middle of the fairway, clearing bunkers and landing more than 200 yards away. Shot!” said the others. “You wee bugger!” muttered my team-mate, “an’ I thought you said you couldna play golf!” It was soon very obvious that I couldn’t. I went round in 158.

PETS
Many pet owners have quiet naturally been confused by the difference between an Animal Behaviourist (Pet Behaviour counsellor) and a Dog Trainer and consequently their pets have been seen by dog trainers when in fact a more specialist service is required. Hopefully the following article will clarify the issue for many owners. Finding an experienced, professional animal behaviour counsellor has been as difficult as finding the proverbial needle in a very large hay stack. Individuals have been able to practice under a variety of names from ‘trainer’ to ‘behaviourist’ or ‘counsellor’ with little regard for their actual qualifications and experience. There has been a huge rise in ‘behaviourists’ practicing without both qualifications and relevant experience who have obtained a few letters after their name by simply completing one of the many distance learning courses. In addition behaviour and training franchises can now be ‘bought’ where so called behaviourists have little to no qualifications or experience, just the ability to buy into a larger equally unqualified organisation. All qualified Animal Behaviourists/Pet Behaviour counsellors are Dog Trainers however, just as a teacher differs from a psychologist, the work of a qualified pet behaviour counsellor stretches beyond that of a dog trainer. A knowledge of evolution, the science of learning theory and animal cognition are all vital, as well as a practical and sympathetic understanding of the relationship between pet and owner. Causes – not symptoms – must be addressed. A vast number of pets given up for adoption (or put down) are surrendered due to behavioural problems such as aggression, housetraining or destructiveness. Not only are ‘problem’ pets difficult to live with, but it can be painful watching an animal we love in distress. This is the time owners are most vulnerable, and the need for clarification of Animal Behaviourist qualifications has become a serious issue following the many misdiagnoses and inappropriate advice provided by unqualified counsellors – advice which can have devastating consequences. A working party made up of Members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour and other relevant bodies consequently recommended that the very minimum academic qualification required
to practice Animal Behaviour should be a BSc (Hons) in a relevant subject. Don’t be fooled by ‘letters after name’, or the fact that the behaviourist may belong to a larger franchise, always ask where your Behaviourist obtained their Degree and experience, or ask your Vet who should be able to recommend a qualified person. Does your dog ever... · Show signs of aggression towards you, strangers, dogs or other animals (Barking, biting, growling, showing teeth) on walks or at home? · Still play-chew or nip you when excited? · Show signs of resistance, flight or aggression when restrained, picked up, groomed or in the vets? · Act reluctant to concede food, toys or other household objects to you? · Behave grumpily if disturbed while sleeping, or refuse to move out of a seat if asked? · Bark, howl, destroy household objects or toilet indoors when left alone? · Pester you for cuddles or play? · Run off on walks to chase scents and wildlife? · Act fearfully to loud noises? · Lunge or pull heavily on the lead, especially towards people or dogs? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above problems, give Natalie a ring now on 0800 328 3256. Catching problem behaviour when young makes them much quicker and easier to treat, avoiding serious problems later on! Invest in your dogs future now! 89

Local Landscapers Win Top Award Burwash based Frogheath Landscapes recently announced that they received a top award for a garden project they have developed. The private garden near Etchingham fought off tough competition, the awards were organised by the national Association of Professional Landscapers and took place in Leicestershire. The company employee Will Dann also went on to win outright as Young Achiever of the Year, an extraordinary achievement. He was up against strong competition from companies throughout Britain. Owners of the award-winning garden, Gill and Charlie Walker are delighted: Gill said “Once again Frogheath have done a fantastic job, we always know that their work results in a great finish. They are so good to work with and we are really pleased for them. We want to develop the property and garden in sympathy with its history and environment, and Frogheath absolutely takes that on board which is great.” The company recently brought over a German designer, Martina Bonsch, she is based in Hamburg and works with the internationally respected Lorenz von Ehren. Her brief was to aid the further development of this high quality project, adding a European flair and simplicity that is in keeping with the 1930s property. She worked in conjunction with Frogheath’s Chartered Landscape Architect and the companies co-owner Stephen Moody. Steve said “We visited Hamburg last year and saw some of Martina’s work and we knew she would bring just the right influence to the project, it has been great working with her” Frogheath has developed a very strong team, the small staff includes a top student from a Diploma course, a landscape architect who started with them 10years ago as a 14yr old Saturday lad, Will Dann who won Young Achiever of the Year and also won Apprentice of the year in 2008. The company has is proud of its loyal employees who continue to develop their skills and training both within the company and with outside influences. After
Before Alison Moody said “There is a real pleasure in seeing our staff develop well, we realise that they are the key to our success and for every effort you put in, they return it double. We hope that by us encouraging them to achieve, they gain the confidence to move on and up. We think that our clients see this too, which is great business.” The company has recently taken on another high flying Plumpton College student, Martin Eccles, 32, is studying horticulture, specialising in garden design. Martin said “I wanted to work for a really good company and the college felt that if I could get Frogheath to take me on it would be the perfect development path, so I was really pleased, especially in the current economic climate that they were prepared to take the risk and have me join their team”. The company is in the process of completing a beautifully built sales and design studio at its base in Burwash Weald. Local craftsmen have worked to the very highest standards to deliver a bespoke oak building that will be traditionally lime and/or clay plastered. It is here that work opportunities for the company and its staff will move forward further. Stephen Moody said “We are aware that times are difficult, but it seems that competitive pricing, good old fashioned quality work and hard working staff is the key to the companies success. We would also like to thank those clients who have contributed to our award winning reputation over the years, by allowing us to submit and then show their work, it is very much appreciated” To find out more you can call Frogheath on 01435 883516 or visit their website at www.frogheath.co.uk.

Even Our Tax Authority is being scammed Keith Luck, a partner in the Rye branch of Chartered Accountants Gibbons Mannington, says “Many more individuals registered on line with HMRC this year with the intention of completing the form ‘online’. SEEDA announces new finance for small businesses SEEDA, the South East England Development Agency, is being given a pivotal role in rolling out the Government’s plans to support small businesses, as announced in Monday’s Pre-Budget Report. SEEDA will provide up to £3m in transition loan funds, available through Finance South East, to be used to help high-growth businesses having difficulty obtaining finance from the commercial sector. The unsecured loans of up to £150,000 will be available in the form of commercial loans to bridge the gap between the amount the banks are able to offer businesses and the amount these businesses need to survive and grow. Recipients will not repay any capital or interest until the end of the loan period.
· A new element to the ‘Designing Demand’ programme called ‘Immerse’ which will provide intensive, extended design support to selected larger businesses · A commitment to increase funding to enable the Manufacturing Advisory Service to meet fully increased demand for its lean innovation programmes · An International Trade Mentor allocated to every new or recent inward investor in the South East · A new ‘Soft Landing’ programme for inward investors to be piloted through Locate in Kent
Pam Alexander, SEEDA Chief Executive, said: ”At a time when businesses are finding it hard to secure the loans they need from the banks, this fund will ensure they don’t suffer as a consequence. This will help high-growth businesses in the South East start to access the money they need to survive and emerge stronger in the upturn.”
· A regional media campaign to highlight the importance of sound business plans, followed by a series of events targeted at SMEs
SEEDA will also be contributing to the £50m equity scheme put together jointly by the Government and eight English Regional Development Agencies, which will be used to convert businesses’ debts into equity. This fund will be targeted at small businesses which are unable to service their borrowing, and can sustain equity to enable them to restructure their balance sheets and access more credit where needed.
· An advanced package of support to be offered directly to all 1500 businesses which have graduated from Passport to Export
Jonathan Shaw, Minister for the South East, concluded: “The Government and SEEDA are working together with this wide range of measures to prioritise access to crucial finance to sustain and grow small businesses across the South East region. These initiatives present a great opportunity for SEEDA to use its wealth of business expertise, experience and strategic leadership to navigate and succeed in these unique and challenging economic circumstances.” Together these new measures will provide at least an additional £5m for small businesses across the South East. This is in addition to the £10m Rapid Rescue Response package announced by SEEDA in August. This support includes: Robust Business Development · A free health check for all SMEs from their local Business Link 92
Developing Overseas Trade · Passport to Export to provide new support for firms investing in Research and Development specifically to reach overseas markets
· Additional funds to promote UKTI’s International Trade Sector Advisors · Immediate extensive research carried out by the 7 Sector Consortia to enable them to identify global markets and sectors offering the best trading opportunities for their members Encouraging Investment · Extending capital grants under the Selective Finance for Investment in England scheme to the entire South East for eligible SMEs with longterm viability whose investment plans are being held up by current economic conditions · A new £3 million Commercialisation Fund to support businesses with high growth potential to bring new products and services to market as part of the £20 million South East Funding Escalator Businesses who think they may be eligible for support should contact their local Business Link.

FINANCE What can an Independent Financial Adviser or Financial Planner do for you? To survive psychologically and economically within the future economic climate people will potentially have to change their perspective on life and their relationship to money so that their financial meaning is not as much defined by how much they haven’t got but by how much they have. Of course there will always be the fear that you haven’t got enough money and that will create its own financial consequences. However, getting there is a financial building process and that will not happen overnight. Putting a financial plan in place is the key to start with and thereafter you can manifest it step by step over a number of years. Good questions to ask then, who should you choose - an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) or a Financial Planner? Why choose an IFA - Normally a typical consumer will promptly answer (in a considerate way) – “To acquire financial advice” – which is acceptable, but then again, you should remember a key point while giving that answer. An IFA doesn’t work in banks; they are never found in building societies or working for a life insurance company. They are not obligated to any of the commercially available financial products, which are offered in the market. All these prove one thing - the advice that an IFA provides is not limited by the product providers. It grants them the power to act as an agent solely dedicated to their client’s requirements. IFA’s use their skill’s to research the financial products market which translates to flexibility, suiting the exclusiveness needs of their clients. Additionally, whatever advice an IFA might provide stays well documented i.e. they present it in writing and with reasons behind why the recommendations are given. An IFA could offer you financial advice, support, and guidance. For example – you could find you have a problem trying to understand the jargon within a financial product; this is a predicament in its own right. Take for example - a life insurance policy or a private/company pension plan. For most people to appreciate the decisions required in understanding the benefits each will deliver, you are probably going to have need of independent financial advice of some sort. The regulatory body of financial services (FSA or Financial Services Authority) have entry level qualification requirements for any person willing to work as an IFA. The prerequisite is the Certificate in Financial Planning. There are further qualification requirements that are specific based, for example, an IFA dealing in mortgages must have a Mortgage Advice Qualification (MAQ). The certification from the Association of the Pensions Management Institute (APMI) provides pensions professionals and trustees, and their employer organisations, with an effective means of achieving bodies of up to date technical knowledge and understanding at the right level. This helps to ensure that professionals have the necessary skills and competences to fulfil their demanding roles in the workplace. There are further recognised qualifications for pension managers, consultants, administrators, international benefit specialists, lawyers, accountants, trustees, support staff and also for those for whom pensions is just part of their work. Just remember that the field an IFA is providing his services for must tally with the degrees he/she has earned so far. What is a Independent Financial Planner
They are an endorsed experienced person who can competently handle your money matters in harmony with your perceived personal and or business life style. They are the professionals who provide guidance on all financial matters from future cash flow forecasting, business finance management, (critical component of any business) taxation, investment, retirement, estate, and inheritance planning, trusts, large financial decisions, such as planning for the birth of a child, funding college, or dealing with a divorce. When it comes to the money you've worked so hard for, it's important that you find a professional that can help you manage it properly and efficiently. What is your plan? Is it realistic? Has it been implemented yet? If so, are you monitoring it closely? They thoroughly understand their client’s, financial status and goals before recommending any guideline. The Truth About Money When you feel ill, you visit a doctor. When you have dental problems, you trust a dentist. If you need an operation, you trust a surgeon. When you purchase a home, you trust a mortgage broker. When the car breaks down, you visit a mechanic. When you eat out at a restaurant, you even tip the waiter to ensure proper service. Why wouldn't you visit or trust your finances with a professional? Financial planning is all about assuring money for the things that we desire to achieve our goals and objectives. From a roof over our head to that futuristic dream home, a weekend away to that dream holiday experience. Providing for and having enough cash to fund those future investments, perhaps having enough money to pay for our children’s education, and so on. To achieve your financial goals and to have a constant money flow it is very important to manage your expenses and investments cautiously. Apart from that, information for what you should do to manage your finances efficiently is equally important for your lifetime financial security. If you learn to handle your money intelligently you will avoid unnecessary use of your credit cards and expenses. Use your credit cards only when you have sufficient amount of money to afford. Regular savings can make your life easy and helps to avoid taking debts at the time of any emergency. Budget for your expenses and make a habit to prepare a balance sheet of your purchases. Set your future goals in advance and start planning to invest money on a regular basis. Plan and review your goals and efforts to achieve them periodically. These are simple things that you can start doing at any point of your life. “Fail to plan, you plan to fail”. Personal financial matters, one wrong step can cost you a loss that you would not be able to recover, for years or sometimes for life long. If you are not sure about your retirement plans, health plans or insurance policies, the easiest way to get information and guidance is to take help from a financial planner. Finance is a very personal matter and it is only you who has the responsibility to manage it. Sometimes you need to be hard on yourself by restricting your expenses but this would lead to a happier life later. MRA (Mike Robertson Associates Limited) if you are concerned about your finances and want to discuss your financial planning needs with regards to all aspects of your financial future, don’t wait, remember, “People don’t plan to fail, they just fail to plan”. Rally Sport Glory Returns The New Focus RS In the 40-year story of Ford RS, the marque has been applied sparingly, merited by only the most high-performance Ford machines of the time. Six years have passed since the last Ford RS – the Mk1 Focus RS – finished its strictly limited production run. Now the famous badge has returned for its league of devoted fans and a new generation of performance car enthusiasts. This new Focus RS is the product of Ford Team RS, headed by Jost Capito, a committed car enthusiast and racer. Alongside Capito is a small team of dedicated performance car and motorsport engineering specialists, led by Chief Programme Engineer, John Wheeler, whose own expertise stretches over 20 years of Ford performance and motorsport vehicles. Team RS works hand-in-hand with Ford of Europe experts from across the engineering spectrum to create Ford’s performance road car range. More than 100 engineers have been involved in Focus RS and every one understood the weight of expectation that greets a new Ford RS model. States Capito: “A new Ford RS is a significant event; the badge is not applied to a new car very often and when it is, it has to be a great car. I know this Focus RS will be thoroughly deserving of the name.” From early in its development programme, the team set a target to create a car with the poise, power, performance and precision to trade lap times with far more exotic vehicles and be a benchmark for performance and value for money. Their result is a car capable of lapping the legendary 20.8km (12.3 mile) Nuerburgring Nordschleife repeatedly at speed and equally adept at cruising home afterwards; blending Ford Focus practicality with bespoke engineering, dynamics and a turbocharged, 305PS (300 bhp) 2.5-litre Duratec engine. Thanks to intensive engineering development from an already high starting point, the new Focus RS will not just be the fastest current Focus model when it goes on sale in early 2009; it will be the fastest and the most powerful front-wheel-drive European Ford ever. Focus RS is also the only front-wheel-drive, 300+ PS high-performance car available today, an indication of the challenge of creating such a vehicle and the achievements of Ford Team RS in doing so. “Historically, RS models have been very different in their approaches. Our strategy was to define and create a new RS, with all the characteristics we wanted to see in it, rather than develop a car to compete with anything else already in the market,” says Wheeler. With the go-ahead to create a new Focus RS, Team RS had already created an impressive benchmark and base in the new Focus ST, so early effort was directed on setting the two cars apart. From NVH to design, powertrain to safety, Ford specialists from across the engineering spectrum were involved with Focus RS, needing to understand quickly its requirements and attributes and the differences in philosophy between the ‘ST’ and ‘RS’ brands. To illustrate the fundamental differences of approach between an ST and an RS, the Team RS engineers created the analogy of ‘Dolphin and Shark’. Capito explains: “ST and RS should be different animals, as are a dolphin and a shark. Both are highly developed for their roles but have unique characteristics – ST is a balance of performance and refinement, but would not fit the attributes we set for RS and vice versa. It’s 96
surprising how much we used this analogy.” Those attributes for Focus RS were developed from a definition of “the ultimate production Focus.” In keeping with its heritage, RS is an even more performance-oriented vehicle than ST, developed in every detail with on-track performance of equal importance to on-road behaviour. An exhaustive set of individual criteria was created for every aspect of the car’s performance, dynamics and durability, a process similar in scope to that required for a whole new carline. However, for all the differences, there is one area of common ground between Focus ST and RS. Both are front-wheel-drive, one of the first decisions taken in the development of RS and explained by Team RS Chief Engineer, Dirk Densing: “Front-wheel-drive was our preference all along. All-wheel-drive systems add cost, weight, inertia and consequently, fuel consumption. Compensating for the significant weight of an all-wheel-drive system requires dynamic compromises we preferred not to make. If you can achieve the performance you want without steering disturbance, then front-wheel-drive is a better performance car – lighter and with a more precise, linear steering response than AWD. With the work of our advanced research team in Aachen, we were able to achieve this and deliver something genuinely different,” he says. In being both a genuine Ford RS and a full member of the Focus family, the new Focus RS represents a significant moment in the legacy of both brands. The year 2008 marked 10 years since the Ford Focus was first revealed to the world at the Geneva Motor Show in 1998, paving the way for a range of Ford vehicles whose exciting design was matched by classleading driving quality. Since this time, more than 5.5 million Ford Focus models have been built in Europe, including Russia, with the car also built and sold in North America, Asia and South Africa. Now, the latest generation Focus also wears the famous Ford RS badge with pride, continuing a distinguished heritage that can trace its roots back 40 years and encompasses a wide range of Ford models. “RS is central to Ford’s high-performance heritage and Focus has played a major part in establishing Ford’s excellent reputation for driving dynamics. The all-new Focus RS embraces and celebrates both of these – a genuine RS and a genuine Focus,” concludes Capito.

Monte Carlo Rally Premiere for Škoda The Škoda Motorsport factory team entered two Fabia Super 2000 racing cars in this season's first IRC event, beginning a new stage in Škoda’s Fabia Super 2000 project after nearly two years of development work. Driven by Finns Juho Hänninen and Mikko Markkula and Czechs Jan Kopecký and Petr Starý, respectively, the cars had to cope with challenging conditions including rough weather and have shown that the Škoda Fabia Super 2000 has developed a competitive racing car. The results and performances put in by both drivers, especially over the first two days of the event, are very positive and beneficial for further work on the Fabia Super 2000 project. Finland's Juho Hänninen was first overall after the first day; Jan Kopecký, despite technical problems in the first stage, quickly fought his way up from the 24th place after that stage to finish tenth at the end of the day. On Day 2 the event moved to snow-covered roads near Valence where both Škodas did well again, coming first in four stages of six altogether - Juho Hänninen three times and Jan Kopecký once. Moreover, when Jan finished second after his teammate in one of the stages, the team was applauded by fans for achieving a “double“. However, the Finn had back luck in the stage of the day, falling to the third place after one of his tyres received a puncture. Continuing his way up the field, Jan Kopecký finished seventh overall on Day 2. The final day of the event brought the teams back to Monte Carlo. Although Juho Hänninen had to retire after an accident, he showed that his experience is a great asset for Škoda Motorsport and that he is a good choice for the Fabia Super 2000 vehicle and the entire team. His performance on Day 2, including three stage wins, drew massive attention from both fans and media. Continuing his catch-up mission, Jan Kopecký put in another good performance and finished fourth overall. Commenting on the factory team's Monte Carlo Rally performance, Head of Škoda Motorsport Michal Hrabánek said: “In the first place, we are glad to have successfully completed this important stage of our vehicle development project and opened the door to a new one. The
Fabia Super 2000 project is running on two complementary levels, racing and sales. “We have certainly made a competitive car that is prepared to compete with the best in its class, and I also consider the team's performance at this year's Monte Carlo Rally good. I daresay we have shown our strength, but there's still a lot of work ahead of us and we have to work as hard and efficiently as we have been working so far and never lose respect for our competitors. “I wish to thank all of the team members - the crews, mechanics, engineers and other people involved for excellent teamwork, and believe that this Monte Carlo premiere will motivate all of them to continue working hard. I also believe that we have done a great job in terms of promoting the Škoda brand. Our future rallying agenda will depend on detailed analysis of the Monte Carlo Rally performance, but our plan to take part in a further five events of the 2009 IRC series remains unchanged for the time being.” Summarising the competition, Juho Hänninen said: “Everything was going my way until Friday morning. I was surprised how fast I was able to go - the technicians did an excellent job and the car was working perfectly. Our tyre choices were very good, too, mainly thanks to my “on-track spies”. I believe that the car's future results will be very good and that this event has shown its great potential. However, a lot of hard work is still ahead of us. I am sorry to have been too fast on Friday - I simply pushed it too hard as I wanted to make up for my oneminute loss. It's a pity, as the entire team has done a fantastic job here.” Finishing fourth in the overall rankings and getting five points in the driver’s competition, Jan Kopecký was more than happy: “The Fabia Super 2000 has shown how fast it is, and it's apparent that the direction we have set is good. All the kilometres done in last year's tests are an important factor behind this success. I wish to thank the whole team and the Škoda company for helping us move this project ahead, as well as the Czech fans along the roads for supporting us loudly.“

Top Performer On The Road With Ambitions On The Track New Porsche 911 Gt3 To Debut In Geneva The new Porsche 911 GT3, which will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show on March 3 2009, is the latest evolution of an iconic sports car. Embodying the essence of more than 23,000 Porsche racing victories, the 911 GT3 is the ultimate integration of driver and car and arrives in the UK this autumn. In developing the second generation of the Type 997 911 GT3 into the most sporting and dynamic road-going 911 ever with a naturallyaspirated power unit, Porsche has applied a wide range of know-how gained in motor sport. Indeed, this is precisely why the new GT3 is truly impressive not only on the road, but also on the race track. The 911 GT3 offers an even higher standard above all in two key areas: performance and driving dynamics. The proven six-cylinder naturally aspirated power unit now develops a maximum output of 435 hp (320 kW), up 20 hp over its predecessor. This results first and foremost from an increase in engine capacity by 200 cc to 3.8-litres and from improved cylinder head gas flow: now not only the intake, but for the first time also the exhaust camshafts, are adjusted by VarioCam. A further important point is that, through its upgraded power and performance, the flat six ‘boxer’ engine also offers a significant increase in torque at medium engine speeds, a benefit of particular significance in everyday motoring. Clearly, this also means a further improvement in performance; the new GT3 accelerates from a standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.1 seconds and reaches 99 mph (160 km/h) in 8.2 seconds. Top speed is 194 mph.
The second emphasis in developing the 911 GT3 to an even higher standard was to further improve the car’s driving dynamics. For the first time, the 911 GT3 comes with a particularly sporting variant of Porsche Stability Management (PSM), offering the facility to deactivate both Stability Control (SC) and Traction Control (TC) in separate steps. And to give the driver unrestricted, individual control over the driving dynamics of his car, these functions are not reactivated automatically even under the most extreme driving conditions, but only at the touch of a button. The new GT3 offers increased grip and stability at high speeds, courtesy of specific modifications to the car’s aerodynamics which have increased downforce front and rear to such an extent that the overall air pressure pushing down on the car is more than twice as great as on the former model. At the same time, the new ‘Aerodynamics Package’ gives the GT3 a distinctive appearance which is further accentuated by new Bi-Xenon headlights, LED rear light clusters, and modified air intakes and outlets. The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) fitted to the 911 GT3 has enabled Porsche engineers to make the springs and anti-roll bars stiffer yet again, thus ensuring even more precise handling in the PASM ‘sports’ mode. However, the PASM ensures appropriate ride comfort suitable for everyday use when in the ‘normal’ PASM mode. The GT3 rides on new, lighter wheels in a racing-inspired design – with a centre locking nut – fitted with ultra-high performance (UHP) tyres. Tyre pressure monitoring is fitted as standard. With driving dynamics and performance increasing to an even higher 98
level, following Porsche tradition the braking system has also been enhanced accordingly on the new 911 GT3. The brakes now feature larger friction discs and an aluminium cover to reduce un-sprung weight further still. Brake ventilation has been improved, which guarantees a higher level of consistent stopping power over long periods. As an option, the GT3 comes as before with an exclusive version of the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) made specifically for this model. Making the car even more suitable for the race track, the new 911 GT3 will be available with the option of new and highly innovative Porsche Active Drivetrain Mount (PADM) engine mountings. These special engine mounts recognise a particularly sporting, race-like style of driving, making the normally ‘elastic’ engine mounts harder and particularly resistant. This retains all the motoring comfort of the GT3 in everyday traffic, while on the race track the effect of the mass forces coming from the engine is much reduced, particularly in fast bends and on winding tracks. Yet a further advantage is improved traction when accelerating from a standstill. Another new feature is the optional lift system for the front axle which is able to increase the ground clearance of the car, at the touch of a button, for driving on bumpy surfaces or steep gradients – for example into an underground garage – by 30 millimetres (approx 1.2 inches). The new Porsche 911 GT3 goes on sale in the United Kingdom and Ireland from autumn 2009, priced from £81,914. Further specifications and technical details will be confirmed nearer to launch. Fitted to every 911 GT3 is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the new Porsche Driving Experience Centre, Silverstone.
