Editor's note

Flashback to August 2020

The world was a scary place to be in, not knowing where and how the C-virus would make you its next victim. Businesses were shutting down left, right, and centre; employees were being laid-off left, right, and centre; people were succumbing left, right, and centre. Everyone was holding on to whatever they could hoping to get through the tough times that lay ahead. What made it worse was that no one, absolutely no one could tell whether it would get better or worse or when and how would it all end.

And it was amidst all this chaos that I quit my secure job as a People Development Specialist to pick up the editorial pen. They called me insane!

I had no past experience when I wrote my first edit note and took on the task of creating and breathing to life the first edition of ASPIRE. I don’t have an education in Media and Communication, nor have I worked even close to the profile that I was about to shoulder. All I had were two titles – one for the magazine and one for myself. There was no team to lead. There was no process in place. There were no guidelines to follow.

The one thing that I did have in heaps and loads, and still do that sees me through it all –aspirations!

All I could think of is “what’s next?”

“How do we top this?”

And that’s how we are now 25 editions proud.

What’s next?

In the past two years I have had the privilege of meeting some of the most astounding entrepreneurs and getting to know their incredible stories of grit and determination. In the past two years I have had the good fortune of working with fabulous talent and together we have curated worthy content. In the past two years I have had the joy of seeing ASPIRE grow from ‘just another publication’ to the ‘noteworthy magazine’ that it is recognized and applauded as today. As I hand over the reins to my dear colleague Sangeetha Shinde Tee with best wishes, I’m grateful to all my readers and patrons who have shown the magazine and me so much love.

This edition will be as special to me as my first one. From

Joane Goulding’s parenting method, Shirin Moayya’s journey as an artist, Dr S Pujah’s Bio-7 Wellness polarity balancing program, Sumeet Gupta’s branding technique, Carlos Alamilla’s College Avenue app for students, Scott Neeson’s fund for the Cambodian children, to the history of football, vegan leather and being a veganuary, building information modelling, emerging energy innovations, ski-destinations, bling-cars of Dubai, and ideas to style your Christmas tree, the stories are as always Inspirational, Informative, and Impactful.

As an Editor I have 25 editions to my credit.

Now I’ve got a new story to write, and it looks like nothing from the past. (My new title is ‘PR Director at ASPIRE’… and we both happily continue our aspirational journey together)

What’s next, I wonder? ✪

India takes on crypto uncertainty by launching its own e-currency

India’s central bank launches the digital rupee

The recent fall of the FTX crypto exchange sent shockwaves throughout the financial world. The exchange valued at 32 billion euros declared bankruptcy last month.

Events such as these, as well as the possible fallouts from unregulated crypto markets have had a few governments reaching out with measures to counter the effects of such market upheavals. One of the instruments being launched is the use of digital currency to prevent crypto currencies from undermining global financial stability.

India’s RBI has rolled out a pilot programme of its digital currency this month, made available to individual users. Four domestic banks have been entrusted with carrying out the pilot in select cities only, and the central bank has stated that other banks and cities will be added in due course. Currently The State Bank of India, ICICI, Yes Bank and IDFC will be instrumental in launching this initiative across the cities of Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru and Bhubaneshwar. The programme will stress test the use of this Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) in

real time retail situations and the value of an e-rupee will be the same as the value of the bank notes and coinage. Digital wallets with the CBDC can be used via QR codes.

Currently The State Bank of India, ICICI, Yes Bank and IDFC will be instrumental in launching this initiative across Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru and Bhubaneshwar

The move is hailed as a bold and welcome one and experts say that it will help to reduce the cost of financial transactions, enable transparency within the financial sector and help entrepreneurs with cross-border transactions. It is also hoped that this Programme will reduce overall dependence on physical cash. There is no set date or agenda proposed for a complete national rollout of a sovereign e-currency as the Indian government is keen to proceed cautiously in this matter.

The launch of India’s digital currency coincides with a growing global awareness of the need for such a move as China and the Euro Zone are considering this seriously and Singapore recently launched their own version of a digital currency.

Saudi Arabia and China sign a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement

China and Saudi Arabia shake hands to enhance trade relations between the two countries on a whole range of sectors

Corporate tax comes home

UAE’s corporate tax law comes into enforcement beginning of the fiscal year of 1st June 2023

President Xi Jinping of China made a historic trip to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to solidify business relations between the two nations. He met with King Salman and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to strengthen the ties between them and to underline their joint commitment to a stable, global oil market. The Chinese leader was awarded an honorary doctorate from King Saud University, and the two sides engaged in diplomatic talks to develop strategic partnerships that would be of mutual economic benefit as they signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement.

Bilateral deals worth 30 billion USD were on the table and the communication from both sides stressed the need for further investment opportunities and improving on non-oil trading possibilities. These included car production, desalination capabilities, petrochemical investments, clean energy technologies and mining operations. Both countries agreed that the financial sector needed to capitalise on investment potential as outlined with Vision 2030 and the Belt and Road Initiative.

The United Arab Emirates recently issued a federal corporate tax law which will impose a 9% rate on taxable incomes that exceed AED 375000. Those falling below this earning threshold will be exempt from the law. The Ministry of Finance said that the law will not be applied to salaries of personal income, when it issued the 56 page document on its website. The tax will be in effect from beginning of the financial year of 1st June, 2023. This corporate taxation has been introduced with the aim to help the UAE reach its strategic objectives and enable and accelerate its development. The Ministry stated that, “The certainty of a competitive corporate tax regime that adheres to international standards, together with the UAE’s extensive network of double tax treaties, will cement the UAE’s position

as a leading jurisdiction for business and investment.”

The rate of 9% set by the UAE for corporate tax compares very favourably with other countries. The the EU it is 21.3%, in the OECD countries it is 23.04% and in the G7 countries it is 69% as per the Tax Foundation of Washington DC. Also the UAE corporate tax law has made allowances and exemptions for certain government entities, investment and pension funds, public benefit organisations as they play a vital role in keeping the fabric of society in place. Also exempt are existing free zone operators, and the law makes it possible for intra-group companies to restructure, using each other’s available tax losses for this purpose.

The Federal Tax Authority will be in charge of the administration, collection and enforcement of the new tax law.

UAE makes its way to the top 25 countries in the World Talent Ranking

As Switzerland topped the talent magnet in the world, the Emirates climbed two places to 21st, according to the 2022 IMD World Talent Ranking (WTR). IMD is an independent academic institution and has been a pioneering force in developing leaders. And the three-prolonged approach to measure talent in economies taken by IMD’s World Competitiveness Center (WCC) included the investment & development factor, the appeal factor, and the readiness factor.

The 2022 World Talent Ranking studied 63 economies to assess the readiness of these countries to foster long-term value creation for their economy and enterprises, via their workforce.

Switzerland emerged as the leader among the 63 economies for the sixth consecutive time followed by Sweden, Iceland, Norway, and Denmark, according to WCC. UAE leads in the Arab region at 21st rank followed by Saudi Arabia at 30th, Qatar at

34th, and Bahrain at 35th.“Talent competitiveness in the postCovid period hinges greatly on the motivation level of the workforce, which, in turn, relies on remuneration but also the quality of life and organizational leadership of the economy,” says Christos Cabolis, chief economist at the WCC.

The Emirates, the Arab world’s second-largest economy, is adapting to an economic future and has undertaken several economic, legal, and social reforms to attract skilled

workers in recent years. To create a competitive and global work environment, the nation has encouraged different working models, increased foreign direct investments, and introduced new visa programmes. The UAE government’s strategy is to encourage talents from around the world to come and live in the country and at the same time, develop world-class skills from the current talent pool. For the former, the government’s overhaul of visa programmes such as the green visa that allows a skilled worker to reside in the country without need for a sponsor or an employer, has boosted opportunities for foreign workers. It has also provided incentives to companies to set up or expand their operations, to achieve the latter.

In the coming years, UAE aspires to be positioned as a destination where the next generation of skills emerge and the boldest ideas can flourish. ✪

Imagine this! A digital model of an asset or a project allowing you to visualize in real-time what the end result will be, what issues you could face along the way and how various factors affect your project or your asset. Imagine the money you could save by anticipating the challenges and preparing for them. Imagine being able to manage your assets better, and with more business intelligence!

This is not a dream or a wish any longer. This is the reality of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and is, in fact, fast becoming the go-to tool for creating the best structures.

WHAT IS BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING?

At the very base of it, BIM is artificial intelligence. This software modelling process allows the various players in a project to work together at the same time and contribute to the project – including the design, construction, operation, and management. While 3D modeling is a part of BIM, it also has the ability to incorporate additional data and predict how a structure will react

to environmental conditions like salinity, moisture, temperature changes and such other important conditions.

Let’s consider a commercial construction project. Such a project is vast, not only in scope but also in relation to the number of people involved. There are so many teams that work on the project and these people also change based on the stage of the project. Imagine architects, engineers, contractors, lighting experts, landscape consultants, tradespeople, construction workers, business managers and so many more – all working independently on different aspects of the project. Without information sharing, it is very highly likely to discover a mismatch of ideas and plans when they come together.

Worse still, some challenges and issues are only discovered after construction is well underway and dealing with these means changing orders and timelines leading to increased expenditure.

BIM eliminates this pain! By allowing all key players to collaborate in real-time, BIM allows projects to be finely tuned and accurately planned. It results in well-planned and well-built structures that are safe and cost-efficient. Is it any wonder then, that BIM is one

The construction sector is riding a new wave. Its Building Information Modelling is revolutionizing the way everything from single rooms to skyscrapers to cities are created and planned. PYTHIA BARRETTO explains how this revolution has given a fillip to the business of building

The percentage of companies that adopted BIM was only 28% in 2007. It jumped to 49% in 2009 and further increased to 71% in 2012. Almost 70% of architects, engineers, and even contractors now rely on BIM

of the most compelling and inspirational construction trends today?!

THE ORIGINS

As with most revolutionary ideas, BIM has existed in the minds of visionaries for decades. Since the early 1960s, in fact, ideas were being bandied on how IT hardware and software could be used to replicate designs and accurately capture building models in a way that they could be improved with the necessary adjustments and modifications.

But at the time, there was no technology to match the ideas that were being imagined. Only in the mid-1970s was a system built, by Charles Eastman – an architectural expert, which could be considered the base model of the BIM that exists today.

Although it has gone through several iterations, the basic principles of BIM remain much the same. It’s strange to note how the ideas and thoughts of the visionaries of the 60s are not too farfetched from how the industry functions today.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW…

Since the mid-70s, the appeal of BIM has continued to grow. Although some companies shy away from using BIM because of the associated costs, those who’ve used it successfully believe the investment is more than offset by savings on project costs. Since problems can be highlighted before they occur, processes are more streamlined meaning that extra costs to fix problems after they occur are negligible or completely eliminated.

The popularity of BIM can be gauged from how many companies are using it as part of their processes. The percentage of companies that adopted BIM was only 28% in 2007. It jumped to 49% in 2009 and further

increased to 71% in 2012. If you consider key players, almost 70% of architects, engineers, and even contractors now rely on BIM.

Just about a couple of years ago, the global value of the BIM software market was just over USD 5 billion. In another 5 years, this value is predicted to triple and touch USD 15 billion! That’s how integral BIM has become to architecture and construction.

APPLICATIONS OF BIM BIM undoubtedly has the biggest application in construction projects and can be used right from conceptualizing the project to operating and managing it. Key players at various stages benefit from the use of BIM in the project.

At the design stage, planners, architects, and engineers plan and actualize a 3D model of the project which can adapt to any real-time changes made. For example, if the dimensions of a wall are altered, the impact on other building components touching that wall can be seen in real-time.

In the next stage of planning the workflow, all key players can participate in fine-tuning the process and creating timelines and cost estimates. After this stage is finalized, actual construction begins and those involved at this stage viz. vendors, contractors, building consultants and construction workers can refer to the proposed model and still make tweaks and changes based on ground reality.

Once construction is complete, the 3D model is handed over to the client or those in-charge of operations and maintenance. They are able to observe all the attributes and systems of the finished product, making it easier for them to plan future repairs, renovations and other maintenance works.

While it’s easy to imagine how BIM can be applied to both large and small-scale construction projects, it has other interesting applications. The National Grid, for example, used it within a live construction project – the ‘River Humber gas pipeline replacement project’. Here, 3D models were issued to suppliers to facilitate the visualization of design elements like lengths of tunnels and profiles. The models were also used to justify design decisions, where required. It was estimated that using BIM software helped them avoid construction delays, helping them save about £ 1 million.

By using BIM extensively and applying it to various scenarios and activities, they were able to create

10 ASPIRE DECEMBER 2022 Tech love

virtual training environments, create prototypes and save millions of pounds. BIM was found to be invaluable to projects of every scale on the National Grid project.

BIM has also helped in the maintenance and restoration of heritage buildings and monuments. By allowing data on climate and environmental changes to be included in the modelling framework, for example, restoration work can be modified to protect these historical structures.

THE ROAD AHEAD!

The future seems full of exciting opportunities for artificial intelligence and construction is no exception!

While the construction sector has always had the notorious reputation of being late to catch up to the innovation party, the Covid-19 pandemic seems to have repaired that to some extent. Like most other industries, swift changes had to be made to survive in our changed circumstances – from communication to ordering raw materials and exploring local construction options to managing repairs and renovations.

Luckily for our planet, there is also a big movement towards sustainability, reducing waste, improving resource utilization and being more aware and more conscious of our environment.

BIM does an excellent job of managing both these needs. With architectural projects of all scales depending on BIM, it’s now an indelible part of the construction landscape. It has most definitely led to better-designed, planned, and constructed structures. By encouraging collaboration and information sharing, it helps with better preparation, more solid groundwork, efficient

logistics and waste reduction.

As technology advances, BIM will also evolve – becoming easier to use across all levels. This has naturally led to the need for education and training in the tools and their utilization. Courses are being offered across various programmes and companies are keen on training their employees. “It is the future of construction,” says Karel Dobbels, Managing Director of 3Maten, a survey company based in Belgium.

The debate that BIM raises on technology versus experience is worth a mention. BIM has seemingly levelled the playing field - sometimes allowing novice designers adept in the software to contribute more to a project than an architect with decades of building experience but very little knowledge of how the programme works. On the one hand, this generational disparity may grow wider as technology advances and becomes more accessible.

On the other, with software programmes constantly being developed and revised, they are becoming easier to use and implement, encouraging even the most stubborn minds to try them out.

As we stride into a technologically savvy future, there is no doubt that BIM will continue to evolve and foster more collaboration in the construction of buildings and other assets. Smart cities can be planned and developed with collaboration from agencies around the world. The consumption and conservation of water, gas and energy can be more efficiently planned. The possibilities are endless and there’s never been a better time to watch how technology is impacting and changing construction and allied fields – paving the way for a better future! ✪

LEATHER IS NO LONGER THE LAST WORD IN LUXURY. NEW VEGAN ALTERNATIVES ARE EDGING OUT THE LONG-STANDING KING OF FABRIC REPORTS NAJMUS SAHAR ON THE GROWING USE AND VARIETY IN FAUX LEATHER OPTIONS AROUND THE WORLD

Today’s environmentally-conscious consumer is very aware of the drawbacks of owning leather or fur and as a result we have the ever-growing popularity of cruelty-free, vegan alternatives. The industry that once thrived on fur and animal products is undergoing a drastic revolution that has transformed the fashion landscape globally. The vegan trend has not only been dominating the fashion landscape but is fast making its mark in other walks of life as well.

LEATHER’S TIMELINE

Leather goods are a part of our everyday life. Consciously or unconsciously, we are surrounded by leather products. However, the traditional leather industry is notorious for having a less-than-positive impact on the environment. From billions of cows slaughtered annually to hectares of arable land given over to livestock farming and deforestation to destroying entire ecosystems, the industrial production of leather have been fairly devastating for the planet. Followed by the three-step process involved in producing the final product - preparation, tanning, and crusting — which are known environmental pollutants, this industry is ripe for change and this particular load on the planet bears addressing.

WHY VEGANISM?

Veganuary - which stems from the growing veganism trend, is an entire month dedicated to the use of cruelty-free, environmentally-friendly trends. Retail data company, Edited, published a report on the rising popularity of vegan fashion titled ‘Veganuary: strategies for success,’ which sheds light on the rise in vegan behaviour patterns. For example, the global vegan industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.5%, valued at USD 97 million, by the year 2027. The growing concern for animal welfare and environmental hazards posed by the traditional leather industry have given rise to a range of environmentally sustainable options in cruelty-free, vegan leather in response to an increased demand from the market.

ON THE RISE

Just like the proliferation of social media and digitalization in all walks of life, veganism is a trend that is fast trickling down into our lives and making its impact felt. Innovative vegan alternatives have fast gained momentum, and designers, artisans, fashion brands, and automotive companies have jumped on the bandwagon, influencing people to stay ahead of the vegan curve. The concept of vegan leather is not alien anymore. The rate at which big fashion connoisseurs are adopting this trend and promoting its use has been a blessing to the planet’s groaning eco-systems.

The fashion industry has made the bold and conscious

decision to finally put an end to this vicious cycle and own the environment. With high-end brands like Nike, McCartney, and Tesla opting for cruelty-free alternatives, there could be no better way to propagate the trend for cruelty-free leather and show the planet some love. Partnerships and collaborations with sustainable companies using plant-based raw materials to make leather have led to a paradigm shift in the leather industry.

Fashion brands championing the cause of veganism have been a turning point for the leather industry. The best part about this entire veganism trend is the willingness of the consumers to whole-heartedly be a part of this environmentally-friendly and sustainable alternative industry, as reported in a survey by ‘The Vegan Society’. The study reported

that 73.5% of the target population was ready to pay a premium for plant-based leather goods as compared to animal leather.

THE WORLD OF ALTERNATIVES IN THE VEGAN LEATHER INDUSTRY

The vegan leather industry has redefined creativity and innovation from cork, cacti, pineapple fibre, palm leaves, and apple scraps to Mycelium. Let’s delve deeper into what each of these alternatives presents us with:

CACTI: Who would have thought this prickly plant could be a raw material for vegan leather? Marte Cázarez and Adrian López Velarde were the first to develop a unique kind of leather named Des -

serto: made from the leaves of the Nopal cactus, popularly known as Prickly Pear. This alternative to animal-based leather was soon adopted by the top retailers in the leather-good industry with the likes of Fossil, Karl Lagerfeld, and Everlane joining its fan club. The almighty Mercedes-Benz has taken to incorporating faux-leather, Deserttex, in to their electric concept car.

PINEAPPLE: Who loves Pineapple? We do! Pinatex - a cruelty-free leather made from the fiber of pineapple leaves is a fabulous example of sustainable design thinking. Ananas Anam has the onus of spearheading an innovative natural textile from the by-product of pineapple leaves. High-end labels like H&M and Hugo Boss have embraced Pinatex as a vegan leather option and utilized it across the fashion industry along with a thousand other brands are a part of this pineapple revolution.

PALM LEAVES: What better way than to utilize the by-product of something to create an entirely new, stellar and environmentally-friendly product? The brittle and dry leaves of Areca Betel Nut are dipped into a biological softening solution, making the material malleable enough to

be turned into palm leather and, ultimately, different products. Palm leather offers a genuine replacement for plastic, rubber, and animal leather. The upgradation of this natural fiber helps add value, increasing the functionality and versatility of the final product.

MYCELIUM: Fine Mycelium promises to ‘unleash a new era in materials’ says MycoWorks. This company has patented this technology to biologically engineer mycelium cells to form 3D structures that are innately strong, intertwined, and densely packed. This process happens under controlled, specialized conditions with a unique code that lays the foundation of strong material, from initial inoculation process until harvesting. The entire dynamic process of utilizing mycelium cells has introduced a one-ofa-kind natural material with unparalleled durability, being environmentally safe, with the versatility of customization ease.

APPLE SKIN: A three-layered, rugged, and durable leather alternative called Leap has taken the vegan leather industry by storm. Beyond Leather - a company based in Copenhagen, has been producing a plant-based leather alternative from apple waste and natural rubber. This apple-based version of leather is also doing the environment a big favor by utilizing only 1 percent of the entire water that goes into the traditional leather-making process.

Some notable big labels that are riding the vegan leather wave are worth mentioning as they lend their impactful brand presence to the validity of faux leather as better alternative for the fashion and environmentally aware.

TOMMY HILFIGER: Who has not heard of this American fashion giant that now uses premium quality leather processed from recycled apple peel fibers? Frumat was the one who pioneered this Appleskin fabric which aimed to reinvent apple waste. Their sustainable sneaker collection was a portrayal of this green alternative.

CHLOE: The Parisian label, Chloe, followed suit and launched an inspiring collection of vegan leather mini bags and pouches, targeting the millennial generation and Gen-Z of today. Testament to their knowledge of changing customer trends and a nod towards raising standards in the world of haute couture.

HERMES: Known for its exotic leather bags, Hermes ventured into the vegan territory with a resolve to set a precedent in the vegan realm. Its Victoria travel bag was launched in a mushroom-derived leather alternative, Sylviana. Previously made from calfskin, this shift has undoubtedly been monumental in positioning Hermes as an environmentally-conscious brand. Sylviana has done a pretty decent job of emulating the look and feel of original leather and reducing the company’s carbon footprint. Pierre-Alexis Dumas, artistic director at Hermes, is proud to be at the forefront of this initiative as she states, “With Sylvania, Hermes is at the heart of what it has always been: innovation in the making.”

CHANEL : The French couture house and one of the biggest luxury brands proactively took up the challenge of crafting leather products from Pinatex - a vegan leather alternative made from pineapple plant fibers. They totally banned the use of exotic skins and fur to establish itself as a sustainable brand.

This is certainly an impressive list of brands that have embraced the cruelty-free, vegan leather trend. Hugo Boss, Gucci, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, and many others have consciously adopted this trend.

Vegan leather can justifiably be called the future of the forward-thinking fashion industry. The modern wardrobe is incomplete without vegan leather alternatives - be it jackets, purses, accessories, or other leather products. The vegan leather industry presents a plethora of alternatives for conscientious consumers and creators alike to making the transition to vegan, environmentally-conscious leather a smooth one. Leather is changing its face globally and faux leather is here to stay it seems, and about time we say! ✪

A City For All

More than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. It is projected by 2050 there will be approximately 2.5 billion more people added to our urban areas. In order also to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, we need a systemic and seismic change across our societies. We need to work together, taking a multi-level, trans-disciplinary, integrated approach to achieve more equitable, inclusive, accessible and sustainable, gender equal cities. The ‘wicked problems’ are an opportunity to co-design with others, from policy makers to change-makers and citizens. How can inclusive cities be implemented and achieved? Some essential issues concerning basic human rights and how they are being implemented currently include discrimination, social exclusion, and marginalization. Due to these issues, it becomes difficult for people with disabilities to claim equal access to opportunities and facilities in urban areas and some city buildings. These issues have impacted human diversity, equality,

and social inclusion in our societies.

Dubai is one of the major cities of the world. However, despite the iconic nature of the nation, the issue of density and diversity of people can be seen in most public spaces. For example, placemaking in Dubai is carefully packaged to offer highly exclusive experiences for wealthy consumers. Dubai’s lower-income people, mainly composed of immigrants, are effectively denied access to these places, and security measures are implemented to keep it so. In addition, Dubai has recently focused on placemaking, in which their main goal is a recreation of traditional urban life in which they are setting the place for the rich, both Emiratis and wealthy tourists.

The universal agenda of 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), however, includes a demonstration of the scale and ambition in which they pledge that no one should be left behind. As an iconic nation, Dubai has shared its visions and commitments to ensure that the city will be disability-friendly. They term the nation as ‘a city for everyone’ initiative, with the government

successfully implementing Dubai’s disability strategy and creating solutions to create inclusive and sustainable practices and space.

In the efforts of creating inclusive and sustainable practices and space, societies like Dubai are expected to structure some effective policies concerning human rights as well the convention on the rights of person with disabilities (CRPD), New Urban Agenda (NUA), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The government of Dubai, in collaboration with Dubai Disability Strategy, has embraced responsibilities that evolve around four critical pillars.

Non-discrimination

This pillar reflects Dubai’s principle of not leaving anyone behind. The government is committed to ratifying and implementing an urban policy that prioritizes equity, affordability, and safety of access to physical, digital, and social infrastructure all over the urban planning objectives and programmes. This will ensure age, race, gender and disability will not curtail opportunity and the policy should recognize the equality of all people in the accessible and inclusive urban spaces.

Participation

Local governments are supposed to prioritize and enhance inclusive and accessible methods and environments in which all people, whether stakeholders or beneficiaries, can engage. This should primarily focus on those who face multiple barriers limiting them from participating, like older adults and persons with disability. There should be equal participation programmes that drive the development of inclusive urban planning policies and programmes. By implementing these, the government ensures socio-economic equity through having inclusive measures in schooling, health, legal, hiring practices, and productive employment.

Accessibility

In implementing urban strategies and policies, which protect the disabled, accessibility should be prioritized as a mechanism that guarantees participation and spaces, services and markets based on no discrimination. In prioritizing accessibility, the first step would include addressing and eliminating barriers. Such as the physical and the social infrastructures of the community or city environment. The government should consider reviewing processes and strategies to enable people to access the tools and the necessary information. This can assist citizens to fully comprehend their rights in public spaces.

Inclusive urban policies and programmes

The government should adjust its public policy agenda to become disability inclusive. In addition, the government should also localize international, national, and regional standards concerned with accessibility regulations and legislations such as the international standard organization’s ISO 71:2014 guide on accessibility, web content accessibility guidelines 2.0, and ISO 21542. These standards express a strong baseline of technical procedures. ✪

20 ASPIRE DECEMBER 2022 VIVA LA FIFA ---------WITH THE WORLD CUP HAVING TAKEN CENTRE STAGE JUST AROUND THE CORNER, PYTHIA BARRETTO GIVES US A SNAPSHOT OF HOW THE GAME PLAYED OUT FROM ITS KICK-OFF ALMOST TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO ---------COVER
STORY

The whole world is currently gripped by football fever, and irrespective of whether their national team is playing, and ignoring the time differences, people are glued to their televisions. The lucky few are watching the action as it unfolds in Qatar.

IN THE BEGINNING…

Now also known as ‘association football’ or ‘soccer’ (especially by the Americans), ‘folk football’ was popular in England back in the early 19th century and was played without standardised rules and regulations. But the game as we know it today had its initial rules outlined by the formation of England’s Football Association in 1863.

The game spread to Europe by the early 20th century, and the increasing number of international matches being played meant that an international organisation was needed to standardise, organise and monitor the game. In 1904, representatives from the football associations of Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland came together to collaborate, and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, was born. International relations are never wholly harmonious. But despite differences in culture, language, international alliances and enmity, the game of football continued to spread and grow in popularity. Similarly, FIFA also grew stronger and more influential. As the world marched into the 21st century, the association now has 211 registered member nations. In contrast, the United Nations today has fewer Member States, at 193.

The World Cup was FIFA’s first major organised tournament. Despite other football tournaments being organised under the FIFA banner, the World Cup remains its most important – both in terms of membership and ‘followership’. In the early 2000s, it was estimated that clubs in countries associated with FIFA had around 250 million players.

21 2022 DECEMBER ASPIRE

Since it was first organised in 1930, the World Cup has taken place every four years – except for 1942 and 1946, when it wasn’t held due to the Second World War. From players’ uniforms to the official ball, from the technology used, to the rules of the game, there have been plenty of changes and improvements over the years. The history of this tournament is filled with many firsts, and probably an equal number of juicy scandals.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

With a tournament of this size and scale, the number of ‘firsts’ and records broken is not surprising. As with other sporting events, every quadrennial event is a chance to create new records. Here’s a list of some well-known, and some surprising firsts through the years:

• The first FIFA World Cup, organised in Uruguay, had participation from just 13 teams.

• Egypt was the first African country to qualify for the 1934 World Cup.

• Numbers on the back of players’ jerseys were used for the first time in the 1938 finals in France.

• In 1966, drug testing was introduced at the World Cup in England.

• Penalty shootouts to decide the outcome of tied matches were introduced in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.

• Paraguayan coach, Cayetano Re, was the first coach to be sent off, during a Paraguay-Belgium match in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

• In 2002, the World Cup was held in Asia for the first time, jointly hosted by South Korea and Japan.

• In Brazil, 2014, goal-line technology and vanishing foam

for free kicks were introduced.

• Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was first used in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

• And finally in 2022 Qatar became the first GCC nation to host the FIFA World Cup.

SCANDALS HAVE WINGS

In the words of Edward Snowden: “Sometimes the scandal is not what law was broken, but what the law allows.” From crazy reactions by angry fans, cheeky on-field actions, allegations of rigged matches, teams colluding and poor referee decisions – the football World Cup has probably seen it all.

Let’s look at a few major scandals that have followed this tournament:

• The “Hand of God” is one of the most widely discussed scandals, made more popular by the involvement of one of the football greats – Diego Maradona.

In 1986, playing against England, Maradona’s use of his hand rather than his head went unnoticed by the referee and the goal was allowed. A few minutes later Maradona decimated England’s defence and scored a goal described as the ‘Goal of the Century’. That year, Argentina won the World Cup.

• In 1994, Columbia lost their chance of winning the Cup, after Andres Escobar shot an ‘own goal’ in favour of the host country, the USA. Enraged by the loss, Escobar was shot dead by an angry fan ten days later. An event that shocked the world.

• Maradona made headlines again in 1994. And again, for the wrong reasons. He failed the drug test, was disqualified from the tournament, and never played for Argentina again.

• There’s still mystery surrounding Ronaldo’s last-minute inclusion in the Brazilian squad against France in 1998 as he was initially left out of the team. Circulating rumours hinted at everything from fitness issues to food poisoning. It was later found that he had suffered convulsions in his sleep and was taken to hospital. He alleged that he was forced to play that match, and in the end, it didn’t help Brazil’s cause – they lost 3-0.

• The 2006 World Cup final was between France and Italy, with Zidane hailed as a hero for his part in getting France to that stage. But during the game, in an altercation, he headbutted Marco Materazzi and was shown the dreaded red card. France, with a man down, lost the Cup to Italy on penalties.

And if you thought it gets better with time, the 2022 World Cup will have proved you wrong. Allegations of bribery and corruption, human rights issues, LGBTQ+ issues, treatment of fans, treatment of the media, and last-minute changes in rules have all been made – and we’re only scratching the surface here.

A few major scandals that have rocked this most recent FIFA tournament are:

• The decision of FIFA’s executive committee to allow Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup has been the topic of suspicion ever since it was made in 2010. The U.S. Department of Justice had gone so far as to allege bribes in exchange for votes. This has been denied vociferously by the organisers.

• A study conducted in 2021 confirmed several human rights violations, especially in connection to migrant workers who built the stadia. These violations included withholding salaries, not allowing workers to change jobs at will, and other forms of abuse and exploitation, which continued despite labour reforms in 2014. European teams are urging FIFA to take a stand against these alleged violations. FIFA’s

response, so far, has been to implore their members to not mix sport with political battles and ideological issues.

• It’s no secret that homosexuality is illegal in Qatar. While the organisers have publicly said that everyone is welcome, officials and other prominent people are still speaking out strongly against homosexuality and the stand of the government against it. This position has caused concern, fear even, among players and fans.

• Football has become synonymous with beer. Budweiser – a well-known and well-loved US beer brand, has been sponsoring the tournament since 1986. They had a rude shock when a few days before the first match, FIFA announced that beer would not be sold at stadia. Another blow to Qatar’s credibility.

SILVER LININGS

But back to the football. The 2022 World Cup has already seen its fair share of upsets and drama. Here are a few of the things you might have missed:

Some of the upsets so far (until the time the edition goes to press) this year:

• Messi’s Argentina losing to minnows Saudi Arabia.

• On a side note – rumours that Saudi Arabia players will receive a Rolls-Royce Phantom for defeating Argentina are sadly not true.

• Football greats, Spain and Germany, losing to Japan. And Germany has now failed to make it to the last 16.

• Spain’s exit from this World Cup also seems to be mired in a strange controversy with a tarot card reader alleging that Shakira (Yes! The one whose ‘Hips don’t Lie’) paid her to perform a ritual that hampered Spain’s chances in this year’s tournament.

• Superstar team Uruguay was held to a goalless draw by South Korea – the brilliantly performing underdogs.

• If Cristiano Ronaldo’s in a game, he’s got to be in the news. This FIFA is no different, albeit under a shadow. Criticised for a goal against Ghana he couldn’t take credit for and left out of the games against Switzerland and Morocco - this World Cup may well be Ronaldo’s last. And one he would rather forget!

• In a massive upset, Belgium at 2nd position in the world lost to Morocco, ranked 22nd. This led to riots in Belgium as Moroccan fans took their “celebrations” to an unruly level.

• Cameroon beat South American greats - Brazil - becoming the only African country to achieve this feat. Aboubakar, who scored that historic goal took his jersey off in celebration and was sent off the field! Not a single dull moment in that game!

• Fines for team misconduct seem to be rampant this time around! The fine amounting to 15,000 Swiss Francs were

imposed on Saudi Arabia – twice! – in this World Cup! Now, Argentina and the Netherlands also seem to be in line. The contentious, confrontational, and controversial quarterfinals involving the two teams saw a record number of yellow card being pulled out. Lionel Messi, was one of the 17 players and coaching team members who were shown yellow cards.

And now for the highlights. From the players on-field to the fans off-field a few moments have given us thrills. Here’s a brief roundup:

• Messi’s unsurprisingly brilliant goal against Australia sent fans into raptures of joy and takes his World Cup goal tally to nine.

• Brazil’s Richarlison de Andrade, who almost missed this year’s tournament because of an injury, scored a breathtaking bicycle kick against Serbia.

• Japanese fans tidying up the stadium after a game which didn’t even involve their home country has been making waves. And the team followed suit, leaving their dressing room tidied up.

• Cameras also caught an impromptu dance-off between Arab and Brazilian fans as they danced the dabke and samba respectively.

• Despite all the controversy, Cristiano Ronaldo has made sure to create a place for himself in World Cup history. With his penalty goal against Ghana absolutely spot-on, he’s etched his name as the first male player in football history to score goals at five different World Cups.

• With his brilliant corner pass converted into a winning goal

against Portugal, South Korean captain, Son Heung-Min became the hero not only of his country but a symbol of Asian success as well. A picture of him crying on the field has become one of the most iconic moments of FIFA 2022.

WHAT’S NEXT?

The FIFA World Cup 2022 Championship is still fresh and warm, but that hasn’t stopped people from talking about the next quadrennial event. FIFA 2026 is scheduled to be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the USA.

It is the first edition to be jointly hosted by 3 countries

across 16 host cities and featuring 48 teams. Perhaps influenced by the controversy surrounding the 2018 and 2022 editions, the bidding process for host cities was the most transparent and comprehensive process in football history.

Onwards and upwards – there is much excitement for the 2030 edition of the FIFA World Cup. It will be a celebration of 100 years of the tournament and will be a shining feather in the cap of the host country.

Several nations have got together to put in joint bids for this grand event. Despite being unsuccessful earlier, Spain and Portugal have put in an official bid for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Earlier this year, Ukraine expressed interest in joining their bid. This could be complicated given the geographical separation of these three countries. The ongoing war in which Ukraine is embroiled in also throws a shadow, but given that the tournament is in 8 years, it may not have an impact on the decision taken.

However, the first bid received by FIFA was also a joint bid, made by South American nations Uruguay and Argentina, way back in 2017! Paraguay joined this bid in the same year and Chile jumped on the bandwagon in 2019!

Tipping the scales slightly in their favour are history and sentimentality! The first ever tournament was hosted by Uruguay and it will come full circle for the 100th tournament to also be celebrated there. The other nations are no strangers to being FIFA World Cup hosts. Chile hosted the World Cup in 1962 and Argentina in 1978. Only Paraguay has never hosted this version of FIFA’s tournaments.

Other bids for this momentous celebration are being considered by:

Morocco – This nation is hoping to be 6th time lucky!

Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Greece – Though Saudi Arabia by itself is out of the running, with the 2022 event being awarded to Qatar.

Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and Serbia – Yes! Greece hasn’t decided which bid to join yet. But this bidding group may yet back off in favour of the bid by Spain, Portugal and Ukraine.

The suspense ends at the 74th FIFA Congress in 2024 when the host will be chosen and announced. In the meantime, the vetting process will take place. After the excitement has died down, the hosts will have 6 years to prepare for this celebratory event. Although 6 years seems like a long time, the scale at which the event is to be organised and the prestige of hosting the 100th anniversary of the FIFA World Cup may make it seem negligible!

THE FINAL FOUR…

The FIFA World Cup 2022 started with 32 teams, all with a theoretically equal chance of winning. Shocking upsets, expected knockouts, nail-biting penalty shootouts, permutations and combinations of goals scored and matches won have characterised this football event giving all fans their money’s worth.

The dust has (almost) settled and here are the final four:

Argentina v/s Croatia and France v/s Morocco. With so much at stake, competition is definitely fierce and loyalty more impassioned!

Of the four, Morocco is perhaps the most surprising contestant. The team has conceded the least goals by a semi-finalist in the last four tournaments. Their journey has not only been exciting and inspirational, but it’s also been heart-warming. They’ve given their fans more than enough reason to keep cheering, while they’ve been strongly and lovingly supported by their families, especially their mothers!

A side contest to watch out for is the one for the Golden Boot. Awarded to the player with the highest number of goals in the tournament, the race is now between Kylian Mbappe of France with 5 goals and Lionel Messi of Argentina close on his heels, with 4 goals.

Football brings out various reactions, most of them strong. Sangeeta Tee from Turkey couldn’t care less about 22 grown men kicking a ball about on the grass. While 12-year-old Declan Augustine declares football as his passion and would gladly miss school to watch every World Cup match. In between lies a big group that comes alive every four years in support of the game. But whether you love it or hate it, you just can’t ignore this fun, emotionally charged festival we call football. ✪

The hand that rocks the cradle

AA brief introduction about yourself - your background, qualifications, etc

I’m Joane Goulding, the creator of the Goulding Method™. I am a published author and international speaker with five decades of professional leadership, and education mentoring. Since the early eighties, I and my late husband directed the government accredited Australian Academy of Hypnotic Science. As a well-respected, globally recognized clinical hypnotherapist I have educated, supervised, and trained thousands of professionals.

What is the Goulding Method™?

It’s a cost-effective, solution-orientated, client-focused, drug and substance-free method for children dealing with anxiety and stress. I have had the privilege of sharing the Method around the world and am yet to encounter a child that has not exhibited stresses or anxiety of some kind. It’s offered as an alternative self-help option; It is safe, simple, ethical, and non-intrusive. The Joane Goulding Method™ supports parents by professionally instructing application of the Method in the safety and comfort of their own home while their child or children are asleep.

It’s a very simple, easy-to-apply modality. It is not about ‘curing’ conditions, it’s about making the most of what “is”. It’s about nurturing your child’s mind to give the greatest gift of all - an attitude of happiness and confidence and develops emotional resilience

As the world gets more complicated listen in as ASPIRE talks to Joane Goulding about her unique Method and the simplest way to raise happy and healthy children
It’s a very simple, easy-to-apply modality. It is not about ‘curing’ conditions, it’s about making the most of what “is”

children, using a Method of simple techniques that only takes a few moments each night.

What circumstances led to the discovery / formulation of the Goulding Method™?

In 1966 my daughter was born with major physiological impairments and brain damage which unfortunately only became apparent when she was five. Initially I was told there was no real concern but as time passed my despair was overwhelming as my inability to support my growing child became even more confusing and frustrating. My daughter was eventually diagnosed with cerebral palsy and an approximate IQ of 45, she was deemed emotionally disturbed and therefore exhibited selective mutism. Though I was devastated and angry, I embarked on a parenting path that would change the world and made it my mission to see my daughter walking, talking, and running without falling over and leading a full and happy life.

The process I developed as a result was made possible because of help of two ‘mentors’. My late husband who believed in the power of mind, its creative mechanisms, and its ability, and Emile Coue, the author of the book titled: Auto Suggestion. It outlined the difference between the conscious brain and the sub/unconscious mind - the computer of the mind which we all have and the power of suggestion over the same. Other research around the world during the late seventies indicated that the mind is always listening even while appearing to be asleep. My exhaustive research led to understand that it was my daughter’s conscious brain that was impaired, not her subconscious mind. And thus, while investigating

alternatives I eventually activated the oldest law of the mind. “If you can imagine it, you can become it”, and “whatever you believe deepest in your heart will be afforded unto you.”

The subconscious awareness when activated is called ‘The Arising Reticular Activating System’ or the RAS. It is as though the subconscious mind has an antenna, always listening. This means that parents must be aware that a child’s mind can still hear even while asleep. There are no available filters (the conscious

brain) to determine the truth of the conversation. The subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between that which is vividly imagined and that which is reality. It just absorbs the information and it becomes ‘fact’ in the memory banks of the mind.

What changes did you see in Michelle after applying the Goulding Method™?

It took a couple of years to develop the application once the procedural format was determined. I remember asking my daughter a question one morning: “how are you?” She paused, head to one side and said with a frown, “Happy.” Over the years her selective mutism disappeared and she has been called out for being ‘too verbal’. Movement and strength have

increased and as of 2022 has been happily married for 33 years.

Is the Goulding Method™ endorsed by any accrediting bodies?

Over the years numerous organizations, associations, and training bodies around the world, have recognised the training and the accreditation offered to consultants. Currently a major university in Germany is about to publish a 2-year research paper with some very positive and exciting outcomes. Parents worldwide endorse the Joane Goulding Method™, as for many, the Method has given them hope and support when mainstream intervention could not.

What benefits can a parent expect to find in their child/children on applying the method?

It depends on the individual circumstances and the issues the family is dealing with. It also depends on the parent’s compliance with the Method and showing consistency of commitment. There are so many benefits and I suggest looking over the many case history reports that are available on the international and official professional consultants register at www.gouldingconsultants.com, and also perhaps the research at www.joanegoulding.com

How long does it take for the Goulding Method™ to show results in the child?

In the early years feedback of change usually became apparent or occur within the first month. Then as we progress through generations that time frame become longer. Basically, it depends on the individual circumstances of the presenting issues.

Does the Goulding Method™ interfere with any ongoing treatments / therapies?

No. It’s very supportive of any other intervention being considered by the family. However if there is a history of medical or psychological distress, it

would benefit the family to have the support of their therapist and supervision of an accredited Goulding Method accredited consultant, if in doubt, you can find support at www.gouldingconsultants.com

Have you received any awards and recognitions for your work?

Yes, I have. A life membership with ASCH, CCH, AACHP, and the title of Hypnotherapist Emeritus by PCHA. I have been the recipient of many accolades and awards throughout my career; the 2016 Clinical Hypnosis Hall of Fame Award from the International Medical & Dental Hypnosis Association (IMDHA) in conjunction with the International Association of Counselling Therapists (IACT) was an honour. I am also an independent consultant to The Hypnotherapy Council of Australia (HCA) and an honorary life member of numerous hypnotherapy associations.

Can one learn the Goulding Method™ and what is the way to go about it?

Parent training is available worldwide as is professional training to become a Joane Goulding Method™ accredited consultant. Parents or professionals can visit the International Register at www.gouldingconsultants.com and select an Endorsed Consultant or Licenced Trainer.

The one piece of advice that you would like to give all parents across the globe?

Give a few moments of time and energy each evening to balance distress and create a happy home environment. As parents, offering emotional hugs and happiness insurance are just two of the many outcomes and strengths this non-invasive, substance-free

Method offers. The downline ramifications of change permeate throughout the entire family. An example is sibling rivalry which just disappears, or unresolved fears and anxiety diminish, replaced by calmness within the household. In summary I recommend The Joane Goulding Method™ to all families as it’s not what we leave to our children that matters, it is the knowledge that we leave in their minds.

The Joane Goulding Method has, for half a century, created and continues to create a movement of peace and positivity for as the great poet said, “Child is father of the man.” ✪

The Art of Being an Artist

I grew up with art. My mother and her grandmother were great tailors and I used to watch the intricate processes of how a dress was made. Later, after several courses, I started making my own clothes and following from that I started with embroidery. This had a sense of painting since we try to form the colourful shapes with an embroidery wheel. During childhood I really loved watching my cousins as they copied from beautiful portraits. Then experimentation with colour had me attending make-up classes. But the first spark of my becoming an artist came when I was 16 - I created a sunset scene and I was granted a prize in high school.

Message of and from art are always transferred implicitly. Works of art are derived from inner states and I have always been influenced by

the working of the world around me. I feel the pain of the people in my country Iran quite profoundly, for example, and I hope my artworks reflect that.

I have received art reviews from Italian art magazines ‘Juliet’, published artworks in a French contemporary e-magazine ‘Circle Foundation for the Arts’, and in

‘Inside Artists’ in London, UK. There are others, but these stand out the most, I suppose.

Which artists have inspired you and why?

The journey of my artistic life has had myriad influences. I was inspired by bold people, not a specific artist. In general, all parts of existence are influenced by each other and this informs my creativity.

What does the future hold for Shirin Moayya?

In my opinion, art and life are intertwined. If I can be a fruitful person, then I believe the best will happen for everyone around me. One can’t ask for more from the future than that. ✪

THE ALTERNA

Hydrogen Energy

Solar Energy

The world today almost entirely relies on fossil fuels as primary sources of energy, thanks to their easier availability and relatively lower price of production. But given the increasing energy demands and geo-political events, should we continue depending on these traditional, finite sources of power that contribute to the subtle, gradual destruction of the very ecosystem we inhabit?

The scenario has managed to point the global lens towards alternative, more sustainable forms of energy. This article uncovers how this transition can unfold and the resulting impact it can have on the planet.

The imperative

The need for alternatives to fossil fuels has long been recognized. It is well known that oil, natural gas, and coal are finite, non-renewable resources. We can’t create them

out of thin air. They have to be dug up from the ground, which results in a lot of CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions in the process. We’re currently at the tail end of a fossil fuel super cycle, and many believe we’ve already hit the peak. Research points out the fact that we’ll only have natural gas for 52 years or less. There are others who state that the world has plenty of oil left and that we can stop looking for alternatives.

True, it is technically possible to make more fossil fuels, But the process is extremely expensive, environmentally harmful and uses a lot of energy. The extraction process for fossil fuels is inherently toxic and leads to the emission of CO2. The Statistics suggest that methane, a vital component of natural gas, can accelerate global warming 21 times more than carbon dioxide. And consider this, Methane and Carbon dioxide are not temporary air-borne elements; the former persists in the atmosphere for 12 years, and the latter for many decades. Carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions are major contributors

to climate change and global warming. The extreme weather conditions of the recent past, earthquakes and famines and drought, testify to this all too well.

As we saw, many alternative energy sources have a much lower carbon footprint and are safer for the environment. Reducing air pollutants has a significant effect, as it can save it up to 7 lakh lives per year. The production of more utility-scale energy systems can also lead to economic growth and job creation in the installation, manufacturing, and sustainable energy industries.

What is Alternative Energy?

Alternative energy is a broad term that refers to any source of power other than fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas, and coal. It is not produced from fossil fuels and therefore emits little or no greenhouse gases like CO2. Hence, the energy produced from such gases does not contribute to regressive climate change.

The most common examples of alternative energy include solar, wind, and hydro energy. Though these are the most common options, other less common options include geothermal, tidal, and nuclear energy. Many other energy types could also fall under the broad term of alternative energy, although some are less feasible than others. For example, many people think we could derive energy from burning methane found in garbage dumps. While this is technically possible, it’s not a real source of energy because the availability of methane wouldn’t be enough to meet our need for power.

Is it the same as renewable energy?

Renewable energy is a subset of alternative energy. Renewable energy sources are naturally replenished and hence considered renewable or sustainable. The key difference here is that renewable energy can be continuously renewed and inexhaustible, which may or may not be the case with alternative energy. Solar energy, for example, is renewable

Nuclear Energy

and alternative due to its continuous availability and sustainable features. Nuclear power, on the other hand, is merely alternative and not renewable as it makes use of uranium, a limited resource.

Types of Alternative Energy sources

Here’s an overview of the various alternative energies that could be our future sources of power:

SOLAR: Solar energy, which comes from the sun, is among the most common sources of alternative energy. The sun is a giant nuclear reactor that emits massive amounts of energy and light. Solar energy is derived by collecting that energy and turning it into electricity. This form of energy is completely renewable.

WIND: Considered one of the cleanest and most accessible, wind energy can be produced from small-scale windmills or wind turbines on residential properties to large-scale offshore oceanic wind farms. It’s constantly renewable due to the continuous nature of winds.

HYDROELECTRIC: Hydro energy is the process of using the flow of water to generate electricity. Electricity from this energy is produced through the rotating turbine blades of a dam. However, hydro energy can also be generated without dams. For example, some people have even built machines that use the flow of water in rivers to generate electricity.

NUCLEAR ENERGY: Nuclear energy is derived by splitting the core of an atom, a process better known as fission. It is known for its highest capacity levels, as it can produce a maximum power of over 93% of the time on an annual basis. Whether nuclear energy is renewable or not is a debate still on the rounds.

HYDROGEN GAS: This important energy carrier is a potential

candidate for clean energy. Though hydrogen gas is produced from fossil fuels, bio-hydrogen provides a more sustainable version as it can be derived from organic, biodegradable waste. Hydrogen can be used efficiently with a systematic storage system. For example, an underground storage system can help transform surplus wind energy into hydrogen through electrolysis.

BIOMASS ENERGY: Consists of several forms, which include burnt wood and burnt waste. Biomass in the form of burnt wood is similar to a central heating system. Though renewable, biomass cannot be considered a source of green energy.

BIOFUELS: Biofuels take a similar nature to biomass, except that they are produced through biological matter. Biofuels derived from plants are renewable, but the dedicated machinery used for their extraction may indirectly contribute to carbon emissions.

TIDAL ENERGY: Tidal energy is produced when the kinetic energy of the water movement is converted into electrical energy. This energy form can produce large amounts of energy, irrespective of the speed of the tide.

Chew on these facts

Alternative energy is the need of the hour, as carbon emissions

due to the usage of fossil fuels are increasing by 5.5%-8% every year, bringing the planet’s ecology and the health of its population down. Its impact is all-too-evident, as nine out of ten hottest summers have occurred since 2005.

This disturbing trend is gradually being noticed by countries, as shown in the encouraging ways that alternative fuels are already being used. The UAE is a prime example here, as it houses three of the largest solar plants in the world. The country uses renewable energy more than any other source, with a share of 44% (as recorded in 2019). Iceland leads the world in terms of energy consumption, but 85% of it is derived from alternative sources (despite its mega oil consumption). Paraguay receives 99.45% of its energy from hydroelectricity; no wonder why the country is home to the largest hydroelectric facility in the world – the Itaipu Dam.

These are just a few of the many examples of alternative energy use across the world. Statistics from 2018 suggest that the world has invested $288.9 billion in this game-changing, life-saving utility. These investments are projected to extend by $110 trillion by 2050.

The onus is upon us

Alternative energies hold promise in all respects. The technologies continue to improve, the costs are decreasing, and countries are willing to take the technology beyond the pilot stage. But as with any great developmental project, alternative energy must be supplemented with comprehensive

developments and changes. This includes restructuring of the electrical utility industry, better energy storage solutions, changes in global infrastructure that can support alternative technologies, and substantial investments towards the initiative. The EU, for example, has invested in projects globally to assist innovators working in the arena of clean and renewable energy systems. David Tee, Team Leader of The Izmir NIC project, funded by the EU and Turkish

Given the global crisis that is looming, it is vital that SMEs in this space are pushed to create and disseminate offerings that work towards a greener world for all.”

Let’s hope that the governments and the people they represent, across the world, continue to recognize the need for these technologies and their potential, for the world needs it more than ever right now. It is vital we gear up the definitive march toward sustainability before the doors close on us forever? ✪

Hope For Better Ti

While Christmas and New Year have blended into a lavish secular celebration, the former celebrates a birth and the latter a new beginning. Megha Agrawal looks at how these two elements of hope manifest across the globe

Welcoming new life

All over the world, people look forward to December as the holiday season that starts from the last week of November, surges towards Christmas, crests at the midnight of New Year’s Eve, and finally comes to a stop on January first. No longer strictly religious, the holiday season buildup is about shopping sprees, vacations, seeing family and friends, and consuming delicious food against a backdrop of stunning decorations including Christmas trees, and Victorian village spreads. Brands and media carefully curate products to impart this holiday vibe to all our senses - international cafe chains offering holiday-specific beverages, themed storefront displays, family-centered entertainments like winter markets, holiday-themed movies, specific music, festive menus, promises of epic parties to hail the New Year in.

While a time of festivities and gaiety, this season is also profoundly symbolic. Christmas traditionally celebrates the miracle of birth. While this day has historic and religious roots, the birth of new life in every culture is sacred and a cause for joy and gratitude. There are unique ways in which communities around the world celebrate the birth of a baby. Traditions and customs across Asia, Africa, and Latin America encourage a rest period, keeping the new mother and baby indoors, bestowing lucky charms, blessings, and good fortune in many ways. For example, in India, newborns are kept indoors for 40 days, adorned with kohl in their eyes and black dots on their forehead to ward off evil influences. Bracelets with beads of gold, blue and

mesblack are placed around wrists and ankles, and amulets as per religious scriptures are placed on the baby’s neck. The first bath is a significant ritual, and the first head shave is sacred and done as per tradition. A great deal of importance is placed on astrology and the infant is named accordingly.

Similarly, in Latin American countries like Colombia and Peru, a healing period ‘la quarentena’ is observed where the female relatives of the new mother pitch in to take care of the household chores while the mother heals and learns to care for the infant.

In UAE and other Arab countries like Lebanon, the father of the newborn whispers the ‘Adhaan’ or the call to prayer into the baby’s right ear believing that the first words he hears should be of God. Softened date is rubbed on the infant’s gums symbolizing the first taste passing his lips to be sweet. On the seventh day ‘Aqeeqah’ is observedfamily and relatives get together, and two goats or lambs are slaughtered and distributed. The baby is traditionally named as well.

In Mexico, the entire family prays and chants blessings during the actual birth period. On the child’s first birthday, a pinata is placed on top of the baby and broken, showering him with sweets and gifts symbolizing abundance and prosperity.

In China, mothers are traditionally required to give birth squatting and must not cry out of pain. This is believed to make the baby stronger. On the child’s first birthday, longevity noodles are eaten by the family - a single long noodle placed in the bowl for good luck and long life.

Zhuazhou is another interesting ceremony held on the child’s first birthday. Several objects like a book, pen, calculator, seal, money, shallot, knife, ruler, garlic, grass, and stethoscope are

placed in front of the baby and the object that the baby picks symbolizes his future interests. Like a calculator implies business and accounting interest. Similarly, shallot indicates extraordinary intelligence. The pen would mean a literary bent, grass would point to a green thumb and a possible career in agriculture… Similar ceremonies are held in Japan, called Erabitori, in Korea called Doljabi, Vietnam, Armenia, Kazakhstan, and even Malta.

In Inuit culture native to northern Canada and Alaska, women prefer to give birth in a communal setting with elderly ladies. Babies are delivered by midwives. This practice has been modernized to ensure midwives are medically trained and the communal birthplace is equipped with a modern medical setup to perform safe delivery.

In Africa, the land of spirits and shamans, in many countries the newborn’s first bath is given by his grandmother. In Ghana, postpartum mothers wear white to invite healing and good spirits. In Nigeria, on the seventh day, the newborn receives water, palm oil, kola nut, salt, and pepper as symbols of blessing, protection, longevity, and fun.

In Finland, the government provides a free baby care package for new moms. It contains clothes, bibs, swaddles, bedding, first aid, and feeding essentials in a cardboard box that can be used as a crib. Mothers have the option of taking a cash grant instead, but the care package is much more expensive and preferred by Finnish moms and supposed to bring luck too.

In Germany, creative naming of their baby might get parents fined. The newborn is expected to have an acceptable first name identifying their gender and an established last name already present in the list of Standesmant or office of vital statistics. For exceptions, a strong case has to be made. For each failed attempt, the parents are fined.

The Birth of a New Year

While Christmas celebrates a literal birth, and the world all over celebrates the arrival of a new child as per their own beliefs and customs, the world

is united in the celebrations of the New Year. A celebration of a metaphorical birth - the birth of a new time and new opportunities. This is a time to celebrate the good events of the passing year, reflect upon mistakes, realign priorities, and resolve for a better coming year. Everyone is hopeful that the new time will bring opportunities to gain prosperity, strength, clarity, purpose, and better ambition. With that in mind, New year parties are the most raucous, happening parties all around the world. The Pandemic has brought the message home - time, health and love should not be taken for granted. Welcoming 2023 takes on a special meaning as the world celebrates in hopes of no more COVID threats on the horizon. Currently, public

gatherings are back to normal, and mask requirements have been removed from most countries. New Year parties are expected to be bigger and better all around the world, but especially in Dubai

Welcome 2023, Dubai style Dubai offers a citywide celebration, where visitors and residents are spoiled for choice. There are fancy brunches, glamorous dinners, and ritzy parties to attend. New Year fireworks are a spectacle to behold with Dubai holding the world record for the largest fireworks with 479,651 shells fired in six minutes, lighting up the palm in 2014. This year, Ras Al Khaimah is gearing up for an attempt to create another world record with a 12-minute pyro-musical show that will feature fireworks and drone formations. But the major highlight remains the Burj Khalifa fireworks. An event that attracts worldwide tourism, this year Burj fireworks and laser show will be record-breaking, largest laser display, traveling the longest distance ever recorded to illuminate the already fabulous 800-plus meters structure. Atlantis, Burj Al Arab, Ain Dubai, and The Pointe will be lit up with firework displays as well.

Surf and turf

As if celebrations on land were not enough, Dubai will see a lot of luxury yacht parties with dance,

music, food, and of course, spectacular fireworks viewing. For a more quintessential desert experience, there are soirees in desert camps on the outskirts to spend the night and welcome the first 2023 sunrise. As an upcoming trend, hotels like Burj Al Arab offer after-parties to witness the first sunrise of the year. Helicopter rides across iconic palm island and other monuments of Dubai are another way to welcome the new year.

Venues to celebrate New Year in Dubai are endless. Jumeirah Beach Residence, La Mer, Blue Waters, DIFC, Naseem Beach, Dubai Marina, Global Village, and Dubai Creek Side offer tonnes of party options.

New day, new year

Once the party is over and January begins, it’s time for a new start. January is named after the roman god Janus, the two-faced god, one looking backward and the other forward. Symbolic! Statistics show that most new year’s resolutions are health related. Nearly 40% of resolutions are to

#

exercise more, 30% are for losing weight and 32% are for a healthier diet. Resolutions have changed in nature since their inception in ancient Babylonia where the start of the Babylonian new year was used to pressure people to pay off debts and return farming tools.

The coming year 2023 has a lot going for it already. The pandemic threat is over, vaccines are effective, and available. Sustainability initiatives are on the rise. Industries like tourism and aviation are picking up. Superb innovations that took place in 2022 - like the refinement of mRNA vaccination, the successful initial testing of the planetary defence system by NASA, and the launch of the James Webb telescope will propel even more innovation in 2023. More and more people will have access to clean water and fewer people than before will starve. What a lot of reasons to celebrate the birth of a new beginning for all of us. ✪

Balancing Polarities Naturally - Bio 7 Method

Ahealthy body has a frequency between 6272MHz. Diseases start if the frequency drops to 58 MHz. Aligning and making the right shift in energies using the essential oil blends and salts is the art and science of what we do. Chakras and Meridian points are energy centres in our bodies. They make up the Energetic Anatomy together with the Biofield or what we also know as Aura. Our physical body is dependent on the energetic body for health and wellbeing. Each body organ, meridians, chakras, chakra petals, koshas, glands, planets, emotions, and space around us has a frequency that can be measured. We utilize the energy measurement through the proprietary and engineered concept healing method, which integrates the measurement of the frequencies of the body and the mind. We can align and correct those frequencies using essential oils and sacred geometry and balancing 5 elements within.

Meridians matter

Our Body is like Electric Circuit – there is twin flow of current in our meridians, A blockage in a meridian (like unplugging two of the extension cords in the circuit) causes an interruption in the flow of energy. The qi (energy) may then find a way to reroute itself through other meridians, but this will lead to a buildup of energy on one side of the blockage and a deficiency of energy on the other. So, balancing the flow of meridians is very important for healthy living.

What is frequency?

Frequency is the measurable rate of electrical energy flow that is constant between two points. Again, everything has frequency. The state of our health and well-being is directly affected by the frequency of our body, and our frequency is affected by the frequency of the things we come in to contact with. Essential oil frequencies have a wide range from 46 MHz up to 580 MHz. Healthy people have a smaller range and our bodies function well between 62-72MHz. Each organ and part of our body operates at its own frequency, and each respond to other frequencies in their own way.

How to raise frequency

Because our vulnerability to disease increases as our frequency decreases, understanding some different factors that can affect our frequency is important.

• Focusing on uplifting news or positivity

• Giving or Receiving prayer or good thoughts

• Rest

Things that lower frequency

• Stress or focus on negativity or fears

• Drinking coffee

• An acidic diet

• Lack of sleep

• Sedentary lifestyle

• Fresh air

• Good nutrition and plenty of water

• Using high-frequency essential oils

• Unhealthy food choices (processed foods, sugar, etc.)

• Feeling or being exposed to negative emotions, stress, anxiety

The choices we make every day directly impact our frequency. By using high quality essential oils with varying frequencies, and making wise lifestyle choices, we can affect our body’s frequencies so that it can be equipped to handle the day-to-day as well as seasons of additional immune stressors.

The Frequency Wellness Concept

We are being influenced by the magnetic action (or attraction) of the frequencies that surround our lives each day. Frequencies impact our state of well-being.

Essential oils are measured in Megahertz frequencies. Essential oils have the highest frequencies of any

measured natural substance. When oils are steam-distilled very carefully, they can be incredible powerful in supporting our emotions and body functions. Everyone can use essential oils.

Not only do they support wellness by supporting our body functions and systems they can also benefit emotional and spiritual well-being. Each drop of essential oil contains countless molecules, so tiny, they can enter every cell of your body, some even crossing the blood-brain barrier. They are able to support our wellness in profound ways at a cellular level; cleansing, oxygenating and regenerating.

The Path to US Education

There is no doubt that an overseas degree offers diverse benefits to both professional and personal growth. Attending college in a different country, like the US, creates an enormous amount of exposure from the diversity of students in the schools, to the multicultural environment that is created on campus and classes by students from different nations and cultures. The US has the largest number of higher education institutions in the world, with more than 3,000 universities and the most diverse fields of studies available around the globe. Many top universities have excellent faculty that comprise Nobel Laureates and Pullitzer winners and studying here offers access to their learning. There have been major positive changes in the US college admissions that benefit international students today. As a general rule, US colleges and universities are more open and welcoming to international students today than they used to be. There are fewer restrictions for admissions such as the SAT/ ACT testing. There are over 1600 US colleges and universities that don’t require these tests, including Harvard, University of Chicago, Stanford, Northwestern and other Ivy League schools.

How does one do it?

For starters, applying on a timely basis and meeting deadlines is of utmost importance. A minute lost often can mean an opportunity lost for college acceptance or winning a scholarship. While studying abroad might seem prohibitive, every college offers financial aid and scholarships. There are more scholarships and financial aid for international students than before the pandemic, but one must apply on time and do your

There are more monies available for early applicants than those late to the party. The college essay is the most important vehicle in the application package. It is the only chance a student has to communicate with the admissions officer and offer a compelling enough story that outlines why he/she deserves to be a student at that university. The student must enumerate all his life skills, challenges and victories in the essay and have this reviewed by a trusted mentor. Letters of recommendation are extremely important, and they must be obtained from counsellors, teachers and businesspeople of long-term association.

The choice of the university is, obviously, a vital factor because the student must evaluate the academic merit, the physical location, the weather patterns, the student body, medical services and, of course, the cost of attending. If the college requests an interview, it is mandatory to attend this face-to-face meeting with someone from the university that is willing to talk to you, one-on-one. This person will have your academic and extracurricular background at hand, so will want to know if you are really the right fit for the school in question. Being prepared, relaxed, well-dressed and comfortable with yourself is important at this step.

Branding Expert Be A Brand Boss

Personal Branding has gained a lot of traction in recent times… we have an influencer industry built on the concept. However, is this just the flavour of the month or if there some substance to the buzz?

I remember being completely influenced by business tycoons like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Ambanis… I mean, weren’t we all? In fact, take a company name and you will immediately recognize the person associated with it… talk Apple and Steve Jobs comes to mind, the Ambanis for Reliance, Jeff Bezos for Amazon and so on. But what sets them apart is the way they represent themselves. Their believe in themselves and what they do, their offering to the world and therein lies their Personal Branding. Because corporate branding and personal branding go hand in hand. You are the entrepreneur building your business and the said business and your personality snapshot to the world need to be allied.

What is it really?

Branding is not just a logo design or identity design

- these are small segments of it. Branding is the exercise which helps in understanding the core values of the product you are creating and aligning the two. It is about curating the voice of the brand to the customer, the feeling and experience and benefits it offers, and understanding the end customer segment. It includes going into the psyche of the demographics of the customer segment to make it a memorable experience, which leads to repeat customers. It then moves to the revenue streams that could be created out of the services, how to foster awareness in the market and efficient customer-friendly roll out.

Once branding is achieved then comes the process automation part, where each segment is understood and aligned with the process required to achieve the desired results. For example, for awareness, companies may use digital marketing where newsletters are sent to the customers outlining the use and benefits of a product or service, while others only opt for ATL and BTL methods. Building processes in every vertical of business has a proven track record. Getting it wrong results in lack of understanding, doubts and frustration in the business which devalues the product and stems revenue opportunities.

It will reflect in your work, the employees around and even in the services you offer. This attitude does not bring in desired results on any front and can even end in business closure. Ultimately, the way you present yourself says a lot about your ethics, your values, and the way you do business. It is a self-introspection exercise to work on barriers like fear, doubt, worry and negativity, and make you stand out in a crowd. It helps in maintaining the self-respect, understanding and confidence one requires to run a business.

Personal branding is like business branding, but it is self-directed. It’s about how you comport yourself, how you dress, talk to yourself or others and how aligned these values are to your business offering. People with high self-esteem are often seen influencing the world, talking on stage, representing themselves, and by extension their product or service more confidently and, as a result, making the big bucks. Aligning your personal branding with the branding is important because that’s the culture you are bringing to the table and that will be experienced by everyone. I have seen many highly knowledgeable people with

low self-esteem and that has always been a stumbling block to success.

Once you align your personal brand you will see a dramatic shift. You will be happier and more confident in the services you provide your customers will increase, sales figures will rise, and people will talk about you and your company as if they were one. Richard Branson is known for Virgin Records, Anna Wintour is synonymous Vogue, Dubai is known for Sheikh Mohammad, Elon Musk is known for Paypal and Tesla… these are all people who understood the simple principle of “People buy people first.”

In a fiercely competitive global playing field you cannot, as an entrepreneur especially, ignore the power of personal branding to get your company soaring. Personal branding is the name of the game and mastering the rules of the game decides whether you stand in the bleachers looking on or take your place on the field with the other brand bosses. ✪

ONE MAN’S DREAM

This is the story of Scott Neeson, a man who went on life-changing holiday to Cambodia and rewrote history for thousands of children.

the amazing work being done by the Cambodian Children’s Fund

e may never know who Ney Hang, Sreyoun, or Yone Sokleang are, but their stories is one of incredible triumph. They are some of the children whose lives were touched and enhanced by the Cambodian Children’s Fund(CCF). Before CCF took them and others like them under their wing, Ney Hang, Sreyoun, and Yone Sokleang among the thousands of children who were wading through the large landfills, trying to eke out a meagre subsistence from the mounds of rubbish in Phnom Phen. The Khmer Rouge had left a trail of devastation in Cambodia in the late 1970’s, followed by terrible genocide and poverty had became a way of life for many in Cambodia.

An unusual holiday

Enter Scott Neeson! The former President of Century Fox was due to take over at Sony Pictures International

Wand decided on a sabbatical to Cambodia before he started at Sony. And in Cambodia his life changed. He happened upon the Stung Meanchey dump and it was the beginning of an entirely new beginning. The horror of seeing the hordes of children scavenging in the landfill was profoundly moving and as he stood there contemplating the excesses of his life in comparison to the scene before his eyes, he decided to do something about it. Sony never saw Scott’s leadership. He gave up his life in the US and with his own funds started the Cambodian Children’s Fund, a non-governmental organisation founded with the aim to establish a safe and enabled lifestyle for Cambodian children and their families.

The incredible work

The mission of CCF is to improve the living standards of the marginalised, facilitating standard education, medical assistance, access to basic needs, leadership training and support programmes. Founded in 2004, CCF has been faithful to these objectives.

At present, 1855 children are cared for at CCF. Seventy percent of the first 200 children who joined at the start are now enrolled in universities and following their dreams and passions – Hang, Sreyoun and Sokleang number among these.

It has started schooling initiatives, rehabilitation programmes as well as outreach missions to help adults process their history and consequently help the younger generation lead more secure lives. The organisation not only supports a child with financial aid to study but is committed to the vision to build passionate and engaged leaders. “We’re making it possible for the next generation to pull themselves out of poverty and transform their community,” is the motto that CCF lives by. Choosing children as their frontline warriors, and arming them with education and wholesome support, CCF is winning the battle against poverty and laying a fresh layer of healing over the wounds of the past.

The wider mandate

In the words of Joseph A Mussomeli, former US Ambassador to Cambodia, “No NGO in Cambodia has impressed me more than CCF. With relatively little funding and even less administrative overhead, CCF has literally changed and saved hundreds of lives of children.” In an effort to sustain

the initial success, CCF has kept a close watch on the community around them. Improper child protection amenities, distorted criminal proceedings against child abusers, unenforced laws, lack of education within the criminal /judicial systems were observed causing various social and emotional injustices that further damaged the vulnerable children of Cambodia. CCF widened its scope in 2013 to

Lettuce begin

Rawesome, sustainable, clean, and healthy - this is the message of Veganuary to the world. Megha Agrawal tells us the benefits of starting the year by going vegan for a month

Amonth of new beginnings, January marks an important time of change in people’s lives. A time to carry out resolutions for worthy goals, it is a fitting month to kickstart the radically constructive lifestyle choice of ‘veganism’. A vegan January or ‘Veganuary’(#veganuary), is a potential juggernaut gaining momentum and bringing attention to a plant-based lifestyle.

Veganism is defined as a lifestyle devoid of animal products - in diet, apparel, medicines, cosmetics, and personal care products. Much more than a diet choice, veganism has far-reaching effects and a chance to heal our planet and health. Veganuary really brings this concept home and allows people to explore the vegan lifestyle, without the pressure of failing, while becoming part of a growing global community.

A green, clean, and caring beginning

The Veganuary movement was conceived by Jane Land and her husband Matthew Glover in York, England in 2014, as a means to combat animal cruelty, climate change, and poor health conditions. The website www.veganuary.com allows users to download starter kits that have vegan celebrity recipes, meal plans, and restaurant information. In 2022 this crowdfunded campaign saw 629,000 signups, with more than 220 countries participating. Veganuary reported that in 2021, by going vegan

for a month, the lives of over 1 million cattle were saved, and carbon emissions equivalent to 450,000 flights were reduced. So why is plant-based food consumption superior for the environment?

World Sustaining Food Goals United Nations

Food and Agriculture has reported that dairy and meat production generates nearly 20% of total greenhouse emissions. Research from the German University of Bonn suggests that the solution to the growing food crisis is a drastic reduction in meat consumption. Currently, livestock farming occupies 83% of global farmland while contributing to only 18% of global calorie intake via meat and dairy. 90% of all soy and 50% of all grain are consumed by cattle. If this grain was consumed by humans directly, it would reduce starvation as well as carbon pollution. Meat Atlas has reported that the top 20 meat and dairy production brands have a larger carbon footprint than entire countries like

50 ASPIRE DECEMBER 2022

Germany and France! The irrefutable fact remains that veganism is the saviour and future of humanity’s dietary needs.

‘Clean’ Fuel for the Human ‘Engine’ Besides environmental responsibility, Veganism is also good for individual health. Health Study conducted at Loma Linda University found that the estimated life expectancy of vegans is 15 years longer than that of meat eaters. In 2017, Harvard Health published a study conducted with over 76,000 participants which reported that meat eaters have a 25% higher chance of dying of heart disease than their vegan counterparts. Also, it was found that a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of cancer, Alzheimer’s, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes by up to 50%. Being extremely low in saturated fats and dense in vitamins, minerals, and roughage, vegan food is less taxing on the digestive system and promotes emotional well-being. Studies published in the Nutrition Journal state that switching from a nonvegetarian to a vegan diet reduces anxiety levels and mood swings. Some proponents of veganism also believe switching to veganism will deliver on global peace based on the “Violence in, violence out” model of philosophy.

The Taste and Protein Issue

Despite the major health benefits, for a lot of people, ‘vegan’ somehow translates to unsatisfying and tasteless salads. The truth couldn’t be more different. The vegan diet is rich, flavourful, and has all types of dishes, even steaks! Beyond Meat and Vivera are very in-demand vegan meat examples.

Another concern is that a plant-based diet lacks proteins and leads to muscle loss. A misconception - a well-rounded plant-based diet is chock full of proteins. In fact, it is medically proven that plant proteins like legumes are better absorbed by the human body than animal ones. People practicing veganism have reported no loss in strength and stamina. Case in point - Venus Williams and Serena Williams are both vegan and outstanding athletes. Cricket player Virat Kohli abstains from animal proteins and is one of the most legendary cricketers in the world. The star-studded list of celebrities and athletes practicing veganism is long with the likes of Ariana Grande, Alec Baldwin, Will.i.am, Emma Stone, Woody Harelson, and Lewis Hamilton to name a few. Companies like Hermes are also joining the vegan movement, collaborating with vegan leather manufacturers.

Veganuary In UAE

With the world’s who is who trying veganism, UAE has embraced Veganuary heartily. A foodie paradise, Dubai and Abu Dhabi culinary scene has seen a sharp rise in vegan offerings. January will see specially dedicated plant-based menus popping up along with the regular fare. In fact, vegan foods and beverages are staples in almost all cafes and restaurants across Dubai - the real hallmark of a cosmopolitan city today.

Veganuary is a very necessary, positively reinforced step in the right direction. This movement entices rather than scares people into trying vegan foods. Social media posts of smiling, healthy people and cute animals are much more inspiring than disturbing posts of slaughterhouses and animal cruelty, eliciting a heartening response. More than ever, people are willing to change their eating habits for better health and a better planet and it would appear that we do need to give peas a chance. ✪

The Road To Bling

Dubai, the most populous city in the UAE, is known for its flamboyant lifestyle. The city is also known for its fascination with cars, but not just any cars. SREERAM VISWANATH lists the bling cars that roam the city’s roads adding to its bling appeal

It’s impossible to drive a Lamborghini, or any other luxury supercar, without a jaw-dropping reaction from people around. But in Dubai, where every other car is also a supercar, it’s not easy to stand out. That’s where the bling effect comes into its own. Because you can be Grand Prix fast and powerful but in a place like Dubai adding some bling to your car can help you stand out from the crowd. Here are some of the most eye-popping cars that make Dubai the full-on, heady experience it is.

"

FERRARI F430 SPIDER

The Ferrari F430 Spider boasts a top speed of over 200 miles per hour, making it one of the fastest supercars in the world. It is a convertible version of Ferrari’s F430 supercar. The F430 Spider has a retractable hardtop roof that folds up and stows in the car’s trunk. The F430 is a beautiful car, to begin with, but if you want to stand out from the crowd, you can add a custom paint job that’s in-your-face, flashy, and eye-catching. This extra bling could be in form of custom wheels and a few other custom exterior modifications. And of course, Dubai is home to such customized perfection.

!

Lamborghini Aventador

The Lamborghini Aventador is a stunning car on its own. It is a quintessential supercar with a sleek body, crazy performance numbers, and a wow factor that’s hard to top. It’s not the latest from Lamborghini but not, by any means, less glamorous. That’s why it makes a great candidate for bling. A visit to the streets of Dubai will give you a glimpse of the Aventador at its best, with a set of gold-plated, diamond-encrusted side mirrors. An Instagram model from Russia recently decorated this jewel of her car with crystals. The million-dollar car has also attracted the Dubai police, as they have this luxury car painted in the elegant green-and-white colours of the Dubai police force, just to showcase that everything in this city is super glitzy, even its law enforcement body.

Beyond Business / auto 52 ASPIRE DECEMBER 2022

Rolls Royce Phantom

The Rolls Royce Phantom is a luxury sedan that’s practically a royal carriage. It’s also one of the most expensive, with the most basic model starting at around 300,000 dollars. It may not be a supercar, but with the Rolls Royce Phantom, you have a refined, smooth, stylish machine and one of the most luxurious cars you can buy. The Phantom is a large vehicle with massive interior space and a V12 engine that puts out 463 horsepower. It’s a powerful car, but it doesn’t have the wild exterior styling you see in other supercars. That’s where bling comes in. Humaid Al Awadhi, a Dubai resident, has coated his Phantom with a beautiful mural on the bonnet inspired by the city. It’s a stunning piece of art with vivid colours and stunning design. Way back in 2013, the Rolls-Royce Celestial Phantom held automobile fanatics in awe when it was showcased with 446 diamonds at the Dubai Motor Show.

$ Bugatti Veyron

The name says it all. The Bugatti Veyron is one of the most iconic supercars in the world, with a reputation as one of the most expensive supercars ever built. It’s one of the fastest cars ever made, with a top speed of 267 mph and a 0 to 100 km/h time in 2.5 seconds. The Veyron has a W16 engine, making it one of the most power-packed cars ever produced. Dubai is one of the only places in the world where you can witness a $600,000 gold-plated beast.

!

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta is a newer model than the F430, but it’s still a superb supercar. It has a 6.3-liter V12 engine that puts out 769 horsepower and a hybrid-style exhaust (making it even more eyecatching to look at). And with a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time in under three seconds, it’s also one of the quickest cars you can buy. The blingfest on this car includes a crystalencrusted Ferrari logo and crystals on the door handles. It’s a car that turn heads and sparks conversations.

It’s a tough choice…

The streets of Dubai are privileged to house some of the most iconic cars in the world. Many of its residents spend millions on a car to turn them into splendiferous objects of some fascination. In a city where cars rule, it would seem brand, price and rarity are not enough. Added bling is what separates the the boys’ cars from the toy cars, it would seem… so which car would you choose for a ride along? ✪

Oh! Christmas Tree…

Read on as Vaishnavi Venkataraman traces the history behind the Christmas Tree and 2022’s best décor trends

the festive season can seem overwhelming with a mountain of tasks to be completed. There’s food to prepare, gifts to pack, events to keep track of, and not to mention the most important and everyone’s favourite part - Christmas tree décor!

Back to roots

Back in the old days the trees, as we know it, were mainly associated with Christian symbolism but tradition has evolved to become somewhat more secular. The ancient Egyptians, Chinese and Hebrews decorated evergreen trees with wreaths, and garlands to symbolize eternal life. Tree worship was common among pagan Europeans, after which

the tradition crept into Christianity, especially in the Scandinavian region.

The Germans set up a Paradise tree outside their homes on 24th December - the religious feast day of Adam and Eve. Initially, they hung wafers on it - symbolizing the Christian sign of redemption, but these were replaced with cookies of various shapes. Besides, the homes also had a ‘Christmas pyramid’, a triangular construction of wood where Christmas figurines were stocked away. The Christmas pyramid and the Paradise tree merged in the 16th century, becoming the Christmas tree we know today, becoming popular with German Lutherans by the 18th century.

54 ASPIRE DECEMBER 2022
Beyond Business / style

In the 19th century, the Christmas tree made its debut in England, popularized by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. Thus, was born the much-known Victorian tree - decorated with candles, candies, ribbons, toys, and much more. This style of tree soon gained popularity in various other parts of the world - North America, Japan, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, and the Netherlands especially. And then in the 1930s, the USA developed artificial trees that garnered much popularity around the world.

Around the world

Centuries ago, real fruit was used to decorate Christmas trees in France but the tradition stopped after a bad harvest one year. Martin Luther started the tradition of using real candles in the 16th century as a way of recreating a starry Christmas Eve sky. In Ukraine, spiderwebs and spiders are regularly used to decorate the Christmas tree as it was believed a spiderweb turns to gold on Christmas morning.

In America, people still decorate their trees with popcorn on strings, calling back to a time when outdoor Christmas trees were decorated with food to feed birds and wildlife. Australians celebrate a summery Christmas and hence adorn their trees with different types of shells, reflecting the season. Finland follows a unique tradition of using geometric ornaments made of rye straw, hung over Christmas tables, that stays until midsummer, as they are meant to bring a good harvest. Denmark uses homemade paper hearts called 'julehjerte'. In Japan handmade origami birds are often seen on many Japanese Christmas trees.

The Swedish use their national flag as Christmas décor, while people in Iceland and Norway decorate their trees with figures from local folklore.

Tree time

Traditionally, Christmas trees are not to be set up until Christmas Eve and they are removed after Twelfth Night which is the 5th of January. People in the US and Canada put up Christmas trees

before American Thanksgiving, however, Roman Catholic homes keep the tree until Candlemas, which falls on 2nd February.

Some of the world’s most popular landmarks ring in Christmas with the installation of a largerthan-life Christmas tree. The Christmas tree at London’s Trafalgar Square attracts thousands of Londoners to watch the lighting of the tree donated by the people of Norway; a token of thanks for help received in World War II - a tradition ongoing since 1947.

Another iconic installation takes place each year at Brussels’ Grand Place. Every year tourists and residents assemble in anticipation to catch a glimpse of ‘Winter Wonders’ - the installation cer -

emony of the 18 meters high spruce. The 50-yearold spruce is brought under police escort to the Grand Place, lifted with cranes, and placed inside holes dug specifically for this purpose. Beautifully decorated each year, sometimes more modern, contemporary installations are put up as well; a reflection of changing times and styles.

Universal Studios, Osaka, Japan; Byblos, Lebanon; Rockefeller Center, New York and many other popular tourist spots across the world also follow Christmas tree traditions of their own, each drawing a crowd of some proportion for a viewing.

Décor Trends 2022

Whatever the global trend, there’s nothing more magical than the sight of a tree in your own home during Christmas. So, pour yourself some mulled wine, put on the Christmas tunes, and get ready to be inspired. From elegant vintage to classic red and gold, here are 2022's top Christmas trends that you can use for your home.

Red And Gold Magic

Bringing back the good, old traditions, red and gold Christmas trees are back in trend this year. Red always works well against the green of the Christmas tree, adding a sense of elegance and luxury. Deck it up with gold ribbons, stars, and other ornaments. For most, gold décor can be unapologetically glam, but matt gold finishes will give it a more muted finish.

Snowy Sophistication

Snow-tipped Christmas trees will bring to life a white Christmas, irrespective of the weather. Add pastel or neutral hues to your snowy sophistication to stay en pointe this season. Also, navy is the new red of the season!

Pair navy accents with white, red, gold, or even green for the perfect touch of grandeur in the entryway, formal living, or dining space.

Boho Beauty

Give your tree a Boho makeover. Opt for a ‘pretty in pink' theme – whether it’s an allpink tree or a few blush-toned ornaments dotted around. Accentuate the tree with blush-toned ribbons, feathers, and bows, along with other elements of your tree. For a further on-trend touch of boho, include natural elements, such as wooden pieces, pine cones, wood cane lighting, vases, and furniture for a relaxed, fun Christmas look.

Floral bling

Forget baubles and stars. This time make a show-stopping, floraltheme Christmas tree the talking point of your party. Take inspiration from Bridgerton- the season’s biggest TV show and shop for some fabulously full faux flowers. Team it with ornate feathers, pearledged ribbons and organza bows and load up with presents below.

Nutcracker Christmas

The Nutcracker Ballet by Tchaikovski is still a mustwatch tradition if you can get to a show around Christmas and is very much the in-thing this season. Back in the 17th century, these figurines were believed to bring good luck and protect the home. From cutelooking soldiers to vintage baubles and ornaments, this storybook theme is sure to grab centre stage. Or go bold and install a large nutcracker in the place of a tree.

LE BAR AT LE MERIDIEN FAIRWAY Good Spirits and Light Bites

The story of the WW1 Christmas Truce EAT it

Silent night comes as a reminder to mankind that amidst all the hatred we harbour against each other, there is love beneath that conquers it all… if only we let it.

Renowned military historian, Stanley Weintraub, brings to life a powerful Christmas story set in the horrors of World War I, where for one night, on Christmas Eve, men on both sides laid down their arms and joined together to celebrate in “No Man’s Land”. Despite orders from the seniors to continue the warfare, despite language barriers, despite the stinging cold and stench of death in the air, the frontline men exchanged gifts and food, drank and sang carols, and even played soccer. They exchanged letters and addresses in the hope that the war would soon end, and that they were creating a brotherhood for the future. It all began when German soldiers placed candlelit Christmas trees on trench parapets, and soon the French, British, and Belgian troops spontaneously joined in to bring in a temporary yet peaceful truce bringing to life this extraordinary moment in time. The men broke bread and buried the dead as is the age-old custom of truces, even as angry superiors barked orders to commence shooting.

Stanley Weintraub’s moving re-creation of the forgotten Christmas Truce reinforces the truth that ordinary men can create extra-ordinary history, and that there is harmony to be found under layers of political turmoil and agendas… if we only let it find its way.

SPICE BLEND Timeless Fragrance by Dior

A much-adored actress of classic Hollywood cinema, Elizabeth Taylor once said, “The beauty of fragrance is that it speaks to your heart”. That’s precisely why Spice Blend by Dior has become a crowd favourite among men and women, alike. Launched in 2019, this beloved perfume has swept most celebrities and even the CognoScentis of Tiktok off their feet.

Spice Blend by Dior offers a spicy concoction of amber and cinnamon. This powerful fragrance features a combination of woody and spicy notes with an olfactory signature that has a biting, yet fresh edge to it. Spice Blend is layered with various levels of

semi-opaque scents with top notes consisting of rum and ginger, middle notes that are a blend of cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg, coriander and pink pepper and cloves. The base notes comprise bay leaf and woodsy tones.

Praised for its longevity of up to 12 hours and its excellent sillage, Spice Blend by Dior is a mature, classic, refined and timeless fragrance. With no rough edges or harsh tones, the scent balances steadily on the edge of being neither a masculine nor feminine fragrance. A must-add to your fragrance collection, Spice Blend by Dior will leave a lasting impression wherever you go.

A supernatural horror and comedy Netflix series based on The Addams Family is directed by Tim Burton who is known for his gothic, quirky and gruesome style and has to his credits some of the biggest blockbusters in Hollywood history - Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Planet of the Apes, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, to name a few. Seeking to bring something new and reinventing the Addams family that has been showcased many times before is no mean task. Reboots usually are sore, but this new Addams family spin-off with Wednesday Addams’ character as the basis of the series is a delightful surprise.

Starring Jenna Ortega in the lead, the series follows the character’s years as a student at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town and solve the murder mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while mastering her emerging psychic ability, making new friends, and also some foes at Nevermore Academy.

Jenna Ortega locks your attention as a smart, sarcastic teenager with a heap of macabre feminist flair supported by a cast that compliments her equally well. The eight-episode first season is a great watch for family viewing over the Christmas holidays. ✪

A Christmas leadership story

There once lived a woodcutter who dwelt in the middle of a beautiful forest. His home was a beautiful little one-roomed log cabin, and he left home each morning to chop logs and earn a living. He liked to live alone and away from the world as he was deeply troubled by the terrible things he saw in the world that stemmed from his fellow man’s wickedness and ego. Each year, at Christmas, he would ask this question of God. “Why did you not come down as God itself so everyone would obey you and there would be no more wickedness in the world?”

Each year, Christmas came and went, and it seemed God was deaf to the prayers of the woodcutter. Years passed, and he became an old and bent man. One snowy Christmas eve, the woodcutter went out to chop wood for his winter fire, and with a heavy heart asked his question again. As the evening came he still had not received his answer and went home, low and sad, convinced that his prayer would never be answered. He pushed open the door to his little log cabin wearily and as he entered he heard a frantic cheeping. Lighting the lamp he saw that a little robin had somehow found its way into his cabin and was frantically beating its wings against a window to try to get out.

The woodcutter felt sorry for the bird and moved towards the window to open it and let the bird out. But the

moment that the bird saw the huge woodcutter coming towards it, it flew to another window to try and get away. The woodcutter tried to go to the other window to release the bird, but again the bird flew away fearfully. This kept happening, and the bird grew more and more exhausted and the woodcutter grew more and more frustrated. In desperation, he sat down on a chair and exclaimed loudly, “If only I could become a bird for a moment, I could show this poor thing the way out.” And in that moment he understood why God became man, coming down from his glory, as a helpless baby, to save humanity from itself. In our ego, in our desire to be the best and the greatest, we often forget that to truly lead effectively, to truly understand others, to be a guide, to be a better partner, an inspirational leader we need to meet our fellow humans in their arena of understanding. May you be inspired, this Christmas, to be the one that shows others how to fly. ✪
