E MILY NO R R IS Back to school – preparing your children for the ‘new normal’ September means ‘back to school’ for everyone, and my two eldest boys, along with the rest of their classmates, will be graduating from homeschool and returning to the classroom. It’s usually hard enough to get back into the swing of the school routine after six weeks off over summer, let alone after almost six months off, which is the reality for many children across the country. If you, like me, are feeling a strange mixture of relief and anxiety about the kids going back, here are a few tips to help you prepare. E A S E I N TO T H E RO U T I N E It’s fair to say that many children will struggle with the morning routine after such a long time off. It might be a good idea to start easing them back into it. In the week or so running up to the start of term, try to get the kids up and out of the house for a morning walk if you can; or get back into the routing of doing a Joe Wick’s workout at 9am. It’ll make the early and chaotic mornings less of a shock to the system. HELP THE KIDS M E N TA L LY P R E PA R E Your child could be excited about going back to school after such a long time at home. Alternatively, they could be feeling anxious and worried about what the ‘new normal’ at school will be like. Share any information you receive from the school with your children. Talk to them about the school’s coronavirus measures, explain what ‘bubbles’ are and talk about the positives too – how much fun it will be to see their friends again and learn new things. If your child is feeling anxious, have an open conversation about what is The Collective Suckies Yoghurts Super easy for little hands to open and made using all natural ingredients, so no nasties.

worrying them and let them know that it is absolutely natural to feel anxious. BE HONEST You don’t want to cause your children undue worry or stress, but it is important to talk to them openly and honestly about what has happened (and is happening). Some children will have lost relatives during lockdown, or will know family members who have been seriously ill or hospitalised. Make the school aware, as they will be able to keep a closer eye on them and offer support. If your children are lucky enough to have mostly enjoyed

There will inevitably be more nerves and anxiety than usual in the run up to the start of this new school year, but there are a few things you can do to help the kids feel more positive. Arrange a socially-distanced get-together with a few of your child’s school friends to help them feel a bit more connected with their classmates. Let the kids help shop for school supplies, like lunchboxes, school bags and pencils, even if this has to be online. They could get creative and decorate their new school things. If your kids will be taking a packed lunch into school, get their help planning their lunches and snacks.

INTERVIEW

I N T E RV I E W W I T H

SO P H IE D U N N E Photographer Sophie Dunne took lockdown by storm with her ‘Portraits On Our Doorstep’ project. Sophie’s project started by accident when she was taking photos of her neighbours during the clap for the NHS, but she soon realised how much positivity she could bring to families during lockdown. Sophie took the time to speak to us about her lockdown triumph.

Q:What inspired you to become a photographer? When I finished my Lens and Digital Media degree I began working in a local school as a media technician. I got my teaching qualification and began to teach GCSE Media Studies. Alongside this I kept up my passion for photography and worked weekends in all of the nightclubs and local bars in Essex, Hertfordshire and London. I became so busy that I stopped teaching and built a team of photographers to help cover all the venues. I created a website called snappedout.com, this was before the days of Facebook and smart phones with cameras. It was an amazing ten years and as a natural progression, my personal social network of people I used to photograph in the clubs, all began to get married and have families. From then my direction changed and I have been snapping all their life stories ever since. I absolutely love it! Q: How did your ‘Portraits On Our Doorstep project begin? On March 26th the nation made the decision to come to their front doors and clap as a sign of thanks for the wonderful work the NHS were providing. People everywhere wanted to show support and come together, which was on their doorsteps. I was desperately missing using my camera and photographing families on a daily basis, so I decided to take the camera out in my street and capture the community clap and see a few friendly faces at the same time. I stood and watched with tears in my eyes. The people in my community are wonderful and it made me think about all the other communities around. This was the moment I realised I needed to visit as many people as possible and capture families on their own doorsteps. Doorsteps became a backdrop that would signify this time and give everyone a piece of history they were going to keep forever.

Aspire / Issue 08/ 25

Q:What was inspiring you to keep so positive during lockdown? This was my opportunity to create a chronicle of a moment in history and what made it even more special was that it didn’t matter if your family was large, small or you lived on your own: it was a time where we were all seen as equal. So I decided to represent this in family portraits on people’s doorsteps, making sure the focus was the doorway only. This wasn’t about where you live or how fancy or big your house was, it was about a time of equality and embracing families being together behind their front door. The front door became the most symbolic backdrop of any photograph I have ever taken! Q:What was the final figure you raised for the NHS? I allowed people to purchase their photographs as a way to raise money for the NHS and raised over £2,000 for them. I can hand on heart say, I have never been prouder of myself and the project I have undertaken. Q: Did you meet lots of new people along the way? I captured front line doctors, teachers, food suppliers and many more key workers with their families. I helped people celebrate and remember birthdays from ages 1 to 100 years old. I also visited single parents struggling, parents in fear of giving birth without their partners, newborn babies that hadn’t met any of their families as well as capturing people’s loved ones that were unable to see each other. I even covered a few famous faces, you 26 / Aspire / Issue 08

may spot them in my photographs! Q: How did the project affect your life? They were the longest hours I have ever worked, I missed a lot of time with my own son which was very hard but I knew this would be something I would never be able to capture again. I hope my son will always look back on this book and remember what a special time it was for everyone, but most of all how special it was that I was able to capture it all and share it with the world in this beautiful way. He spent many hours next to me on the journeys, helping and waiting patiently while I captured everyone and I dedicate it all to him. Q: So, what’s next for Sophie Dunne Photography? Next for me will be getting my ‘COVID-19, Portraits On Our Doorstep’ book published, I am really hoping to get it out in time for Christmas. I’ve just had my very first copy made and I’m so proud of it. I’m also going to be moving to a brand new commercial studio space to carry on capturing families together there, which is super exciting. I hope this will allow me to invite the local community to join me and be creative, I will be teaching photography, editing and art classes. Creating beautiful images is such a fabulous way to express yourself and unwind. I am hoping to give people the tools to share my experience and allow people of all ages to get creative. MAKE-UP TIPS TO ENHANCE A TA N With many of us spending more time in the sun than usual this summer, Aspire wanted to get an update on the best make-up products to use with tanned skin. The right make-up products to enhance your inner glow need to pair with professional application too, so, who better to give us some tips than award-winning Essex make-up artist, Leanne Perilly?

Leanne enjoys creating wearable make-up looks that enhance natural beauty and complement your age, skin tone, and personal style. Leanne specialises in wedding make-up, with a flawless ‘special occasion’ look, to give brides a gorgeous wedding day glow. leanneperilly.co.uk

P R E PA R E YO U R B A S E Before you start applying make-up, ensure that your skin is suitably hydrated. Don’t skip on a base just because you have some colour already; applying moisturiser beneath your bronzer will ensure bronzer and blusher set evenly - you don’t want a patchy-looking tan! A big, fluffy high-quality blusher brush is a good investment if you like to have an all-year glow - try Bobbi Brown’s Bronzer Brush, £39. Leanne recommends a beautiful bronzer by Fenty Beauty Diamond Bomb All-Over Diamond Veil in Cognac Candy. Apply to the cheekbones, temples, nose and eyes for a golden sheen which suits all skin tones, from the palest to the deepest.

G E T C A M E R A - R E A DY ! Want to highlight your cheekbones? Whether your face has a light dusting of natural colour or fake tan has enhanced your skin tone to a gorgeous golden hue, Marc Jacobs Beauty Glow Stick Glistening Illuminator is suitable for all skin tones. LOOK 1 Adorn bronzed skin with make-up products that are lighter in texture, sheerer in formula and impart beautiful golden shades with a lovely hint of shimmer. Warm, muted shades in bronze, gold, rose-gold and champagne on the face, eyes, cheeks and lips complement the warmth of tanned skin. Charlotte Tilbury’s Luxury Palette Eyeshadow in Copper Charge works perfectly with all skin tones and eye colours. The gold, champagne and rose-gold shimmers come with a velvet matte brick shade which adds depth, warmth and contour to your eyelids. It lights up the eyes for both natural everyday looks and glamorous nights out. TIP: For expert guidance on how to use this palette, visit charlottetilbury.com/uk/ then search for the Copper Charge eyeshadow palette and view the video.

LOOK 2 In summer, Leanne also loves the contrast of bright colours, such as azure on the eyes against golden skin and bronze shades. Try Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil in either Electric Empire or Deep End, or the EstĂŠe Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil in Electric Cobalt. Make eyes look brighter and larger by sweeping these all the way along either the top or the lower lash line. Make a statement with bold lines, or smudge and blend for a softer look.

UVB:

• rays cause deeper damage (photo-damage), tanning and DNA mutations which may lead to skin cancer • accounts for 95% of UV reaching the Earth • radiation is 20x more abundant than UVB radiation • has ability to damage cells in lowest layer of epidermis where most skin cancers arise • penetrates deeper into the dermis damaging collagen, elastin and capillaries

• rays cause burning and DNA mutations which may lead to skin cancer • only accounts for 5% of the sun’s rays • causes reddening of the skin (sunburn)

We have become increasingly aware of the risk caused by too much sun exposure, but did you know that most ‘broad spectrum’ sunscreens offer little protection against UVA rays? In fact, SPF is a measure of protection against UVB rays only! Therefore using a product with a high SPF encourages people to stay in the sun for longer.Yes, they experience less burning, but unfortunately receive much more damaging UVA exposure.

HOMES & GARDENS

OPEN UP YO U R H O M E With “more home space” being on the wishlist for many this summer, we take a look at the popular choice of adding a home conservatory.

Aspire / Issue 08 / 57

From choosing a suitable design to maintaining the right temperature, discover what you need to know when starting a conservatory project. PERMISSION Under current permitted development rights, you may not need to apply for planning permission for a conservatory on a detached house, depending on whether specific limitations and conditions are met. However, it is wise to do an initial check to see if you need to do an application. There may be concerns about the façade of your building, the height or width of the conservatory or the impact it will have on the immediate environment and highway access. Whilst consent is normally given, there are still some guidelines to follow. The Government has an online building regulation source for England and Wales where you can find out whether you will need planning permission and complete any necessary application forms. Visit planningportal.co.uk 58 / Aspire / Issue 08

WHICH STYLE? Whether you hanker for a grand conservatory with a traditional feel or something more contemporary, there are an array of styles to choose from. Popular options include Victorian, Edwardian, Gable, P-shaped and T-shaped - or perhaps you will opt for a bespoke style to take into account the unique proportions and dynamics of your home. Victorian is the “classic conservatory style and is still a popular choice. It has a traditional appearance that works with either a period or new build home and is available with three or five facets. It usually comes with a bay front and a steeply pitched roof with decorative finials. Edwardian conservatories maximise space and are a good choice if you want a square or rectangular construction. Being of a practical shape, they are suited to being used as a dining or play room, or as a useful entertainment space.

HOMES & GARDENS

Gable conservatories have a high pitched roof and the design offers a light and airy feel. Sunlight is able to flood through, giving an increased sense of space. It has a somewhat stately appearance which works well with period properties. B E S P O K E C O N S E RVAT O R I E S P-shaped conservatories are a popular choice for a bespoke conservatory. Combining the lean-to conservatory with either a Victorian or Edwardian design, this is ideal if you have plenty of room to extend and a home that warrants a grand and spacious additional living space. Home and garden space can merge into one, with a fabulous and striking bespoke design that will be the envy of your neighbours. The T-shaped conservatory is a versatile design, perfect for the larger property. Create a bespoke design combining either a Victorian, Edwardian or gable style, with the central part projecting into the garden,

forming a porch-like effect. This central structure is the main difference between a P-shaped and a T-shaped conservatory. You can perhaps add steps down into your garden areas from the doors, to further enhance usability. French doors work well with a T-shaped conservatory, allowing you to benefit from opening them for warmer summer months or winter sun. W H AT E L S E ? Conservatories can quickly become a key place to spend your leisure time so ensure that you are primed to cover different temperatures, to remain comfortable. Check out options for underfloor heating and air-conditioning, cooling film and consider thermal efficient roofing. Toughened or laminated glass is recommended and choose internal, as opposed to external beading, which could be removed from the outside by a determined burglar. Add an alarm for an increased sense of security, then just relax and enjoy your conservatory. Aspire / Issue 08 / 59

R E VA M P WITH RESIN If you’re thinking about transforming your driveway, look no further than opting for the increasingly popular Resin choice. We take you through the benefits, maintenance and top tips you need to know. W H AT I S A R E S I N - B O U N D D R I V E WAY ? Resin Bound Surfacing is a combination of resin and aggregates. Its stunning finish provides a surface that is attractive, durable and strong. As well as this, it creates

small spaces in between the gravel allowing water to drain through, avoiding puddles and reducing the risk of flooding.

HOMES & GARDENS

MISCONCEPTIONS Not all resin is the same, which is a common misconception of the trend. There is a range of resins available on the market. It’s also essential to opt for a BBA (British Board of Agrément) approved system from a leading manufacturer. This ensures that the system is tested and won’t fade over time. Leading manufacturers will offer product guarantees where their materials have been installed by specifically approved contractors, so this is something to definitely remember when having any work done on your driveway. WHY GO FOR RESIN? Resin driveways are growing in popularity, our guess is that this is largely due to its durable nature. Not only is Resin a long-lasting option for your driveway, but it is also slip resistant and UV stable: meaning it doesn’t fade in the sun. As the demand for Resin has grown, so have

the options in terms of colouring. There is a vast amount of shades for you to choose from, catering for whatever colour scheme you desire. We spoke to Mark Krendel from Diamond Driveways who cover Essex and the South-East about the popularity of Resin and why you should choose it for your home: “Resin bound continues to be an upward trend and delivers real curb appeal to clients’ homes. Its durability, permeability and broad range of colours make it an aspirational choice. Its installation is a scientific process so it’s essential that only BBA approved systems from leading manufacturers are laid by fully approved, highly trained professionals. Professionals are expensive but amateurs are even more expensive, especially when making an investment in resin bound surfaces.”

BENTLEY MULLINER B AC A L A R Bacalar spearheads Bentley Mulliner’s return to the pinnacle of coachbuilding.

72 / Aspire / April 2020

CARS

The rarest two-door Bentley of the modern era, and the ultimate expression of two-seat, open-air luxury, this definitive Grand Tourer spearheads a return to coachbuilding by Bentley Mulliner – the oldest coachbuilder in the world. This exceptionally rare car is appropriately named after Laguna Bacalar in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, a lake renowned for its breath-taking natural beauty, continuing Bentley’s strategy of naming cars after remarkable landmarks which started with Bentayga in 2015. BENTLEY MULLINER R E T U R N S TO C OAC H B U I L D I N G With the Bacalar, customers will again have the ability to work closely with a team of specialist designers to enhance their vehicle with a selection of unique materials and specially curated options. The Bacalar will be the first – but other new bespoke Bentleys will follow as part of the Bentley Mulliner Coachbuilt portfolio – one of three new divisions of the Bentley Mulliner organisation. A U N I Q U E W R A PA R O U N D COCKPIT Inside the luxurious cabin, Bentley craftspeople have created a cockpit like no other. The architecture of the Bacalar has allowed Bentley Mulliner designers to seize the opportunity to create a theme that not only blends the interior and exterior together but also emphasises the two-seater character with a ‘wraparound’ cockpit design. Pure in line and surface execution, the wraparound design flows from a steeply angled centre console into the dashboard, before sweeping into the door panels. These then wrap towards a

uniquely styled, semi-enclosed luggage compartment behind the seats. This ingenious space is purposely designed for bespoke Schedoni fitted luggage, the Italian company that has designed luxury luggage for the automotive industry for almost 140 years. Created exclusively for the Bacalar, the optional luggage perfectly matches the trim and materials of the cabin. These two luggage ‘pods’ flow from the interior into the exterior, enveloping the seats and creating a true two-seater cabin. A U N I QU E D R I V I N G EXPERIENCE The Bentley Bacalar combines bespoke, hand-crafted luxury with state-of-the-art technology to guarantee an extraordinary driving experience. With all-new coachwork brought to life by Bentley Mulliner, at the heart of the Bacalar is Bentley’s renowned 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 TSI engine mated to a technically-advanced drivetrain. The Bacalar’s dual-clutch, eight-speed transmission offers faster, more efficient gear changes. An adaptive chassis uses Bentley’s intelligent, 48-volt Dynamic Ride System to ensure a responsive ride and exceptional handling and refinement in all conditions. The air suspension system controls ride comfort and lateral roll, cushioning passengers from excessive movement, as well as making the Bacalar feel effortlessly precise. Prices start from £2m. bentleymotors.com/en/models/mulliner/ coachbuilt/bentley-bacalar.html

FAMILY & EDUCATION

BOUNCE B AC K T O SCHOOL NikkiWillis has been a Head teacher of a small school in Ongar for the past 2 ½ years and will be moving to Flitch Green Academy in Dunmow as Principal in September. She has taught all year groups in Primary and is passionate about children loving to learn at school and beyond! As we all get used to this ‘new normal’ that has been sprung upon us, it is difficult to remember what normal school was like. As a Head teacher, I’m trying to remember what it was like without two metre signs and handwashing checklists. Children are very resilient but six months at home for some children will have had an impact. I have seen heroic efforts from parents who have been home schooling and managing day to day life during this pandemic, it has been inspiring. All children are individual, some will bounce back without a thought, some will feel nervous on the first day and then slip into routine quickly and others will have a deeper level of anxiety.

Anxiety is a normal feeling, we all felt anxious before our driving test or exam and we all remember that tummy turn feeling before an interview or the first day at college. It is when anxiety is more than this that it can become overwhelming and it can be a difficult emotion for our young people to manage alone. It will be normal for children to feel a little anxious or worried about returning to school in September but it is when this presents as something more than “first day back nerves” that some strategies would be useful.

Aspire / Issue 08 / 81

H OW D O W E K N OW O U R C H I L D I S A N X I O U S ? It is more difficult for children to manage feelings of anxiety, mainly because they don’t know what they are. Signs to look for in our children when anxiety is becoming overwhelming for them could be children being extremely clingy, changes in behaviour – for example angry outbursts or emotional outbursts over something that normally wouldn’t have that effect, bed wetting or waking in the night. There are many signs, but really any major changes in behaviour could be a sign that feelings are overwhelming them. It is important for adults and children to recognise what it looks like physically in order to help manage it. Story books are a non-threatening way to talk through what worry is and more importantly what it feels like. I can personally recommend ‘The Huge Bag of Worries’ by Virginia Ironside or ‘Ruby’s Worry’ by Tom Percival. I have read both these books to children and we have 82 / Aspire / Issue 08

enjoyed the story but more importantly, it is a good way to understand what worrying feels like. It is also a great way to open conversations about worries and all children will love the stories. Don’t panic if there isn’t anything worrying them – some children won’t be overly worried; we are all special and unique. As parents we want to protect our children, however it is tempting to feed anxiety by over protecting. COVID -19 has been stressful and anxious for adults alike and children pick up on this and it can increase their own worries. When talking about worries regarding school with your children it is important to ‘hear them’ and ‘acknowledge’ them but also be positive about the benefits of returning. We can unknowingly make things more stressful by fuelling these worries with our adult take on things.

FAMILY & EDUCATION

H OW C A N W E H E L P O U R C H I L D T O S E T T L E B A C K I N T O S C H O O L ? • Start preparing during the holidays by reconnecting with the school. The school website or school social media is a good place to start to remind us all of what a wonderful place school is. • Lots of schools are putting transitional resources on their websites – engage with these with your child.

• A worry box at home is useful. Make it with your child, decorate it and suggest they write or draw any worries on a small piece of paper and pop it in the box at any time. You can then decide as a family when you read them and address these worries. Sometimes just voicing worries is enough to ease them.

• Get creative with your child and make ‘I missed you’ cards together to give to their teacher or friends. Encourage them to draw the school or their favourite lessons they have missed.

• If you are really worried about your child’s anxiety, I would encourage you to contact your class teacher or SENCO at the school to ensure they are aware. This will help in those first few days.

• Encourage them to engage with their school friends via zoom or face time (adult supervised) to chat about school and their return.

• The ELSA website has some great free resources to use at home with children and is well worth a look. elsa-support.co.uk

• If your child is struggling with the thought of leaving mum or dad for an extended period of time – think about a transitional object. This will have to be thought about carefully with safety measures in place but anything they can have on their person is great to remind them of you while they transition back to school – examples could be a badge or a special pair of socks!

Be as positive as you can about the return whilst remaining aware of the signs to look for that your child is anxious. The above strategies will help children as we all get used to our new normal. Please feel you can direct message me if you need any further advice @willis_home_diaries and I will be happy to help.

PROPERTY

Since the UK housing market re-opened in May there has been a significant increase in the desire to move house.Whilst the surge in demand is due partly to those who were already planning to move, key search terms on Rightmove show that buyers have re-prioritised their needs when looking to move house. Many will continue to work from home at least part of the week and so properties with defined home or garden office space, homes with larger gardens or those that are close to natural beauty spots and coastal areas, have become more sought after. Urgent relocations, be it from changing jobs or following lockdown relationship break-ups, are also fuelling demand for a home move. It seems buyers are forfeiting a city-central location in favour of a longer, occasional commute from the seaside or countryside, as they embrace the benefits of working from home. Estate agent Savills, who work within the higherend property market, have also reported a higher interest in requests for countryside living. HOUSE-HUNTING GETS HIGH-TECH Whilst the increase in property searches shows initial interest and a desire to move, it doesn’t reflect the ability of potential buyers actually being ready and able to agree to a purchase. Indeed, during lockdown, many with extra time on their hands resorted to “looking for their dream house on Rightmove” but were merely curious and indulging in daydream scenarios. Some house-hunters have gone one step further during lockdown by using their own headsets for a virtual reality (VR) tour of online homes. During the first month of lockdown, Zoopla says virtual reality viewings for new-build properties tripled. Although currently around only 8% of their properties offer this facility, it is a growing trend, with developers starting to budget for virtual tours from the start. Dreams can become reality though so, if you decide upon a change of lifestyle and manage to find your dream house, then you will want to do all you can to get a confirmed buyer, quickly and at the price you want to sell for...

According to Rightmove, home staging a property for sale increases the sale agreed price by an average of 8%. When you are selling a high-end property this can make quite a difference. interior styling can improve presentation. Cullum Design based in London, specialises in home staging and interior consultancy - dressing properties empty of furniture that are coming to market so that they look their best to achieve the optimum sales or letting price. Creative Director Natalie Fernbach told us, “Providing a stunning interior transforms a property for photography and viewings. It is not just show homes that benefit from dressing, ex-rental properties, prime lettings and homes that are preparing to go on the market – any property benefits from stunning and engaging interior styling.

PROPERTY

styletheclutter.com For the luxury property market it is now essential to dress homes and flats, as it’s as much about lifestyle as anything else. You want prospective buyers to be able to see themselves living in your home. Property photography has come a long way too – with more stylized shots used on property listings and social media for marketing. The cost of staging is low compared to the return on investment for property owners looking to achieve a maximum on their assets.” We also spoke to Surrey-based Interior Stylist Leoma Harper, of Style The Clutter, who said, “It is really

important to make a space feel welcoming and lived in, when it comes to dressing a room. Making someone walking in feel comfortable and at home instantly makes them imagine living in the space, which in turn helps sell properties and the lifestyle. This is created through giving the space ambience and style, using accessories such as candles, plants, books and trays, even kitchen accessories out on display. Soft furnishings such as cushions and throws will also help create an environment that will make someone want to unwind and relax.”

S W E E TC O R N We love cooking with sweetcorn as it is such a versatile vegetable. Perfect as a starter or a light lunch where you can get inventive, it also works as a quick and easy simple side dish for mains. It brings colour to your dishes, as corn comes in yellow, white or colourful variations such as blue, purple or even rainbow! Its high fibre composition means it aids digestion whilst antioxidants slow down the ageing process. High in Vitamin C, and also B12, iron and folic acid, there are lots of health benefits from including sweetcorn in your diet. We recommend buying fresh from your local farm shop with the husk intact. Choose cobs that have not been sitting in the warm sun and eat as soon as possible.
