READING ROOM For this remodel of a 1980s home in Austin, Texas, designer Martha O’Hara chose to envelope the study in Moscow Midnight, a luminous shade from Sherwin-Williams. The moss green leather ottoman from Lee Industries through CAI Designs and scallopedfront console in cool grey by Vanguard from J. Marshall Design add contrast. An area rug by Stanton Carpet through Watson Smith anchors the room. The formal sofa from Vanguard is covered in taupe performance fabric. The reclining midcentury-style armchair, inspired by a Milo Baughman design, is from Thayer Coggin, and the double sconces in antique burnished brass are from Visual Comfort, both through CAI Designs. designchicagomag.com

rendy colors come and go, but the classics are forever, for a very good reason. Blue is indisputably a classic. There is nothing more valuable in the world of design than a color that, chameleon-like, can go with everything, from tangerine to ballet pink to forest green. The French artist Yves Klein was so enamored of it that he invented his own, now known as International Klein Blue. It is such a pure color that people who are colorblind can often see it clearly. Klein explained his passion for the color thusly: “Blue has no dimensions, it is beyond dimensions, whereas other colors are not.... All colors arouse specific associative ideas, psychologically material or tangible, while blue suggests at most the sea and sky, and they, after all, are in actual visible nature what is most abstract.” As demonstrated here, the versatile shade can be used as a universal base, a theme that runs through an entire room, or the most subtle of accents. Embrace the blues! n theMART DESIGN CHICAGO

TREND REPORT THIBAUT’S Tapes & Trims are a wonderful way to embellish everything from pillows to draperies in exclusive and coordinating colors, sizes and designs. CARLISLE & CO.’S Tecido Vinyl comes in a range of colors, including Emerald, a rich blue-green. The wallcovering line’s subtle striping and pattern give the illusion of all-over texture and is inspired by finely threaded textiles. Because it is high-performance vinyl, it is durable and perfect for high traffic areas. Through Holly Hunt.
PINDLER’S design pairings help you coordinate colorways and graphic patterns seamlessly. Nouveau and Maestro take modern, geometric designs and add a punch of drama with bold colors and embellishment. Shown here in rich cerulean blues and poppy red-orange hues. The collection celebrates high-fashion, bold color, modern shapes, elegant finishes and fine detailing.

esigner Sean Lavin—the chief design officer for Visual Comfort & Co—fuses his sophisticated, modern aesthetic with the most current LED technology to create his newest collection, inspired by The Bauhaus, a school founded by modernist architect Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany in 1919. Lavin favors clean lines, natural materials and a neutral color palette, resulting in designs that make a strong statement while also perfectly complementing a full range of design styles. Lavin explains, “I am fortunate to work with a passionate development team, including world-class design partners and artisans. Each step throughout the process is an opportunity to collaborate. It never results in compromise – only balance – maintaining the original design intent while bringing art to life.” Through CAI Designs. n

n a new collaboration, architectural interior designer Ben Pentreath dives into the Morris & Co. archive to create the Queen Square Collection, named after the road that first housed the venerable brand’s factory and showroom. Featuring original designs across 18 fabrics and 18 wallpapers, Queen Square is filled with nostalgic familiarity. The collection celebrates the simple things; an ethos shared by William Morris, who had a great appreciation for the beauty of the English countryside. This collection showcases the longevity of expertly crafted design, and celebrates the creativity of the Arts and Crafts movement. Pentreath explains, “I’ve always loved the designs of William Morris, and we’ve used his timeless papers and fabrics in many of our decoration projects over the years. So it was a wonderful experience to be let loose in the Morris & Co. archive: we’ve taken many original patterns and recolored them to cast his designs in a completely new light.” Through Zoffany. n

e never get tired of talking about kitchens and baths. For one thing, they are the most high traffic rooms in the house, especially now, when everyone is home and every room serves many functions. The kitchen, always the center of activity, is now even more so. The spa bath is more than just a place to escape the week, it’s now the
place to escape the daily rigor of working and living at home. We are rethinking everything from storage to surfaces with an eye towards usefulness, but never sacrificing beauty in the process. From modern monochrome to splashes of bright, sunny color, these kitchens and baths provide inspiration for your own spaces— whether they are in need of a full update or just a minor tweak. With these beautifully designed rooms as inspiration, you may see your next project in a whole new light. n
At The Orchard, a new luxury tower in Lincoln Park, the interiors are designed by Chicago-based design firm Soucie Horner, and include bespoke kitchens individually crafted by Christopher Peacock. It is the first new development in the city to feature the work of the acclaimed kitchen designer throughout. The handpainted walnut cabinetry is custom-fitted for such things as spices and cutlery, and includes luxury details such as nickel fittings and hardware. Says Peacock, “These are really suburban sized kitchens for vertical living, and we designed them to be multi-functional, for the way people use these rooms today.” The kitchens also include Waterworks fixtures, and appliances by Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. 40

In an elegant white kitchen, created for a family of four by designer Alice Benjamin, the designer bleached the dark oak floors to add a sense of lightness and space, and painted the walls in Benjamin Moore China white. She added an island clad in quartzite, flanked by stools covered in bright blue faux leather from Holly Hunt. A deep country sink from Waterworks is fitted with faucets by ROHL, along with Sub-Zero refrigeration and appliances by Thermador and Bosch make this a truly functional space. The backsplash is a handmade subway tile by Waterworks with subtle nonuniformity that makes them shine.
Gail Drury of Drury Design created this kitchen in new home for empty nesters who wanted two separate workstations and a layout designed for entertaining, cooking and convenience. It had to be easy to maintain, have accessible storage at appropriate heights for a taller couple, modern appliances and different lighting options with a variety of settings. The main prep sink is a Galley Workstation in the island, and the cooking area includes a Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer, a warming drawer below the Wolf double ovens, and an additional steam oven located at the end of the island. On the other side of the kitchen, a large sink and Miele dishwasher complete the clean-up station. A dry bar with full-size Sub-Zero wine cooler and under counter refrigerator are perfect for entertaining. 42

Susan Ruge of Smalldoor Design began this kitchen renovation just as Illinois started to lock down due to COVID-19. Her clients wanted to make their kitchen more “stay-at-home” friendly, so Ruge created a more livable space for this family with five adult children, their spouses, and girlfriends. The backsplash, clad in Artistic Tile tumbled marble contrasts with the Mick De Giulio for Kallista sink (available at Ann Sacks and K&B Galleries), and Perrin & Rowe faucets (available at House of Rohl and K&B Galleries). Appliances by Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove are illuminated by recessed architectural lights by Tech Lighting through CAI Designs. The sweet Roman shade in Santa Barbara Ikat by Schumacher adds a classic blue and white touch.
Designer and builder Dan Kittilsen of DJK Custom Homes designed this sleek kitchen for a newly constructed townhome in Naperville. Kittilsen worked with Dacor to provide the utmost in functionality, using the brand’s Contemporary line of appliances. Characterized by minimal and sleek aesthetics, the collection of appliances offers clean and simple design elements. Kittilsen chose a 48-inch Dual Fuel Steam Range, a 30-inch Double Wall oven, a temperature-controlled Wine Station, along with a wine column and wine cellar, and column refrigerator and freezer units, all in Graphite stainless steel. The Maxim Lighting pendants, through CAI Designs, echo the bold geometry of the space. 44

In a streamlined modern kitchen for clients in South Florida, designer Mick de Giulio complemented his own polished and brushed stainless steel drawers with custom-finished white oak cabinets. The countertops are brushed quartzite. The main sink is from the de Giulio Collection, and a convenient secondary sink is Soltiere designed by De Giulio for Kallista (through Ann Sacks and K&B Galleries), with faucets by Dornbracht through K&B Galleries. Wolf wall ovens, a Gaggenau cooktop and microwave drawer, and Miele dishwashers make this kitchen the ultimate in style and functionality.
Staci Munic of Staci Munic Interiors designed a master suite, including this spa bath, for clients that she met in Palm Springs during Modernism Week. The couple wanted to add a pop of Palm Springs vibrancy to their Chicago bedroom suite, which they described to Munic as a “beige, boring, dark, small and depressing.” The designer enveloped the entire suite in Benjamin Moore Wickham Gray, varying the finishes to create some glow, and added a pop of ocean tones with a Phillip Jeffries watercolor-esque wall covering. Textiles by Kravet and Pindler, shower fixtures by Dornbracht through K&B Galleries, and cabinet hardware by Katonah all add a luxurious feel. 46

rianne Bishop’s clients were ready to make a change for the contemporary as they transitioned from an empty nest in the suburbs to a sleek new unit in The Renelle. “This was definitely a departure from their home,” Bishop explains. Though they preserved certain pieces to re-incorporate, “we got rid of the Oriental rugs; we got rid of the reds, oranges, and yellows that they’ve lived with for 30 years; and gave them the opposite of that.” But the couple presented the Brianne Bishop Design team with a few non-negotiables: including showcasing a baby grand and a whopping wine collection—not to mention making the most of top-notch views of the Tribune Tower. “One of my favorite memories of this project was actually shopping with our client in theMART,” Bishop recalls. They’d ended up at Holly Hunt, where the client announced he absolutely had to have both the spacious sofa and C table that now grace his living room. “He didn’t even want to get up!” Bishop recalls. The team complemented these choices with framed work from artist Cleveland Dean and additional seating. “The barrel chairs from A. Rudin are one of our secret weapons,” Bishops explains. “They’re so comfortable yet incredibly functional for a situation like this. It can be an area for conversation, or you can turn around for extra seating to watch TV. But they have a small, city footprint to them.” Around the corner — past the baby grand — is a dining room that offered a unique challenge. “You walk in, and this is what you see,” says Bishop, acknowledging the

room’s proximity to the entrance. “We didn’t want to have anything that took away from the view.” So they chose a light fixture that narrows to slim, glass sticks. Yet even with the unobstructed view, it would be hard not to notice the room’s ample custom wine display — crafted to offer a beautiful, environment-controlled home to 370 bottles. “We did entertain doing the wine storage on both sides,” Bishop remembers, explaining that even this sizeable display still only holds about a tenth of the client’s collection. The comestibles for this ultimate entertaining space make their way from a kitchen that boasts even more wine storage: a below counter wine refrigerator from SubZero. Meanwhile, a cooktop, oven and microwave drawer from Wolf lend sizzle. Bishop focuses the space on a larger, dark island by highlighting it with overscaled lights while keeping the perimeter light and open. Bishop’s feelings about light differ when it comes to the master bedroom. “I take sleep very seriously,” she explains. So, she encourages slumber with sumptuous textiles by ROMO and a velvety wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries. Meanwhile, wall-to-wall drapes from Holly Hunt “provide blackout when needed but then completely open up for that killer view of the Tribune Tower.” Still, “the bedroom was just screaming for one of those items that lend a little touch of character,” Bishop remembers. “I found a vintage chair and we gave it a complete new life.” They lacquered its legs and arms and also added a “really wild, velvet print from Dedar.” Like the master bedroom, the master bath offers another fabulous view of the Tribune Tower. “We wanted it to feel very clean and modern but also not take away from that view,” Bishop explains. Thus, aspects of the space—including Dornbracht fixtures (through K&B Galleries), and mirrors from Arteriors, through CAI Designs—reflect the Tower’s verticals. Also important: luxury. “We wanted it to feel like they were on a staycation,” Bishop says. How do her clients feel about the results? “They love it,” Bishops says, pointing to a window where they often read while enjoying the view. And if they ever feel like toasting their new home, they don’t have to go far for a glass of wine. n
Bishop added wow factor with overscaled lights but kept the glass clear so that they didn’t detract from the view. They shed light on a bright and ample culinary workspace that includes sleek cabinetry by Snaidero, refrigeration from Sub-Zero and appliances by Wolf. designchicagomag.com

t’s not every day that designers with an affinity for melding classic, high-end residential interiors with a modern edge land a project that demands just that sleight of hand. So, when Lauren Lozano Ziol and Michelle Jolas, co-founders of design firm SKIN, were contacted to revitalize an historic home in Chicago’s popular Lakewood neighborhood, they were thrilled. Located on a charming street lined with big, beautiful pre-war mansions, the structure’s old-world appeal was indisputable—but it needed a contemporary update. “The whole first floor was paneled in a dark wood, with dark molding,” explains Lozano Ziol. “They really wanted to adhere to the home’s historic nature, but they wanted it to feel fresh and updated, with a sophisticated modern elegance.” Understanding their concern, Lozano Ziol convinced them to paint most of the dark wood paneling throughout a dazzling shade of white. “It opened up the space,” she said. “You’re still able to see all the beautiful millwork, the design on the stairs, and especially the decorative moldings on the ceiling, but now it all pops.” The entry was also given a bright and airy makeover. Dark, heavy stained-glass windows that kept natural illumination at bay were replaced with leaded classic windows adorned with an alluring glass design that floods the space with light. “It set the precedent for the rest of the house,” says the designer. For a renewed, modern sensibility in a traditional frame, the designers implemented a palette of teals, blues, and greens throughout to bring the outdoors in and add a sense of vibrancy that contrasts beautifully with the predominantly white base. Old world fabrics that pay tribute to the home’s architecture, such as mohair, velvet, and linen with tape trim, were incorporated alongside more contemporary plaids, geometrics, and clean-lined furniture—perfectly catering to the clients’ differing design styles while yielding a masterful blend of modern and traditional. In the living room, a striking Holly Hunt purple side table plays off the white Roman window shades defined by a Samuel & Sons trim in a Greek Key pattern. Tealhued throw pillows in fabric from Fabricut tie into the vibrant textile distinguishing the bench cushion behind the curvilinear sofa. A tete-a-tete sofa from A. It made it feel like a modern family home with the sophistication of a bygone area. It’s rich and regal, with the elegance and architectural details you don’t see in a newly built home. ucky the designer whose clients know what they want — and realize they don’t know everything. Not all projects hit that happy medium, but when they do, the experience is better all around, and can often lead to repeat business. David Kaufman of Chicago’s Kaufman Segal Design has had his share of serial projects with clients, including this impressive weekend home on New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee Having worked previously with the homeowners on residences in Chicago and New York, Kaufman was more than ready to collaborate when they turned to him to make their newly built New England property a real home away from home. Taking a cue from the great Shingle Style retreats of the past, the soberly handsome house—designed by New Hampshire’s TMS Architects—is replete with the kind of traditional details (attractive fireplaces, window seats, built-in bookcases, a commodious sun porch) that can make it easy to linger inside, even on the nicest of days. Especially because of the way Kaufman has kitted it out. Not surprisingly, Kaufman’s clients wanted this rustic getaway to immediately express an air of relaxed comfort. At the same time, they were looking to keep these interiors in a fairly traditional mode. “My clients are very formal in their aesthetic,” shares Kaufman, who has executed residential projects across the country, from Aspen to Delray Beach, “and a lot of the furniture we used had traveled from Chicago to their New York apartment to New Hampshire. So, the challenge was to

work with these existing pieces—to reinvent them—and achieve a casual look from this quite formal furniture.” Kaufman negotiated the traditional profile of the client’s furnishings by incorporating fabrics and hues that generated a muted look. “Most of the textiles we selected have no sheen to them” he says. “For example, we always start with a rug and build a room from there, and the rug we specified for the main living area is wool and has a very flat weave. Most of the textiles we’ve used have no silk, no sheen to them, and therefore create a more casual vibe.” The homeowners have a taste for French style furniture—roomy fauteuils and Louis XVI occasional chairs—which Kaufman made right at home in checks and stripes. A pair of chairs from the couple’s New York bedroom were relieved of their peach silk upholstery and garbed in an easygoing woven fabric. steely blue. “We took the same approach when it came to things like tile, opting for a matte finish,” notes Kaufman. “The backsplash in the kitchen has a rough texture and not quite perfect quality, which works to support the casual character the client was after.” The dining room exemplifies the tradcasual balancing act Kaufman performed as he brought these interiors into focus. Open to the kitchen and surrounded by windows, the space is a far cry from the kind formal dining room one might expect in a home of this architectural bearing. But it had to work comfortably for everyday meals, as well as for dinner parties. To strike the right note, Kaufman sourced all new product, going a tad vernacular with a heavy-limbed trestle table and offering a certain chic with buttoned up chairs from Kravet. This is a house with a space for just about everything, from quiet corners to settle in with a book, to a family room complete
with pool table. But if there is one spot in the home that really captures the essence of lakeside living, it’s the multi-purpose sunporch. Framed by glass-fronted builtins on one wall and a massive, rough-hewn hearth on the other, with a prow of large windows projecting into the landscape, the space is capped by a substantial coffered ceiling. Outfitted with a glass-topped dining table (popular for morning coffee) and informal wicker sofas, the space does the lake house tradition proud. The architectural formality of the room is underscored by Kaufman’s choice of Benjamin Moore’s 466 Garden Path for the paneled walls, while the earth tone fabrics on the laidback seating inject that essential casual note. “Our task.” summarizes Kaufman, “was to blend this desire for formality into a very casual setting, to create interiors where you are not afraid to come in from the lake and sit down. I think we’ve done that.” And how. n designchicagomag.com

wo circumstances helped designer Lisa Wolfe take big swings when it came to this Lake Forest home for her client, Gina. The first: Gina was ready for major change. After leaving a marriage (and a home she’d described to Wolfe as “very cold”), Gina and her kids were ready for space where they could “roll around,” unafraid of scuffing floors or leaving fingerprints. The second: Gina had pointed to an example on Wolfe’s website. “I want my house to feel like that,” Wolfe remembers Gina saying, “like everyone’s having a good old time.” The house was Lisa’s own. Initially, the new space was a blank slate. “She had the clothes on her back and some bedding,” Lisa recalls. First, they tackled a family gathering space, which Wolfe made whimsical and cozy using a dark wallpaper with bright birds in flight, an extraordinary patchwork rug, and a very special piece of art. Gina’s ten-year-old child had created an image of a night sky; when Wolfe saw it, she said, “We’re going to frame that and put it in the family room.” Not only is it now the room’s focal point, but every time the young artist looks at it, Wolfe says, he is “so proud.” Bold wallcovering continues in the dining room, where larger birds soar from floor to ceiling, above a ‘sea’ of animal print. “I wanted it to feel like you were at the center of the tip of a mountain and all you could see around is ocean and sky and birds,” says Wolfe. The home’s powder room already had exciting, patterned paper. And, though the client initially assumed it would be axed, Wolfe said: “Let me show you how we can work with this and make this bathroom sing.” She did just that,

with a hot pink ceiling so bright, she says it looks like “molten glass.” Wolfe lauds impeccable painting by Ragsdale for both that highlight and another colorful ceiling—the bold green one in the bedroom of one of the home’s young artists. Originally, Wolfe intended to use the hue on a midcentury dresser, but Gina’s son loved it so much that the color eventually ended up on both walls and ceiling—a bold backdrop for the art of a boy perpetually producing more. The droll light fixture—reminiscent of a jester’s hat—is another nod to his humor and creativity. In the kitchen, Wolfe wanted people to be able to “take a breath” between the bird-bedecked family and dining rooms. But even in a 72

space that includes relatively restrained countertops, and a backsplash by Artistic Tile, there are non-traditional choices, including flushmounted star fixtures above the island, and cabinetry in a shade of blue from Benjamin Moore so striking that—when Gina chose it—Wolfe thought, “You’re kidding! You’re going there with me on this color?” Discussing yet another impactful wallpaper (a metallic floral that explodes from the foyer, down the hall, and up through the second floor, as well), Wolfe emphasizes that, when she surveys the home’s many bold choices, “It’s important to me that it makes sense and that there’s a sequence and there’s a balance.” So how does she find it? “Oh,” Wolfe answers with a joyous laugh, “that’s just magic.” n designchicagomag.com

fter more than three decades living in a traditional, Tudor-style residence, Amy Erb’s longtime client was looking to make a change, building a new structure that would offer “fuss free” living. Working in tandem with an architect and landscape designer, the Divvy House founder and principal sourced local materials like reclaimed barnwood and Wisconsin limestone to craft the owner’s forever home, a five-bedroom lakefront property that would be a welcoming haven for a large extended family while also incorporating the client’s wish list of amenities, 30 years in the making, all under one roof. “She wanted low maintenance living without sacrificing style,” says Erb, “Nothing contrived, pretentious, or overdone—instead practical and stress-free living.”
The first order of business was that all of the rooms would have a purpose, if not two or three. Additionally, the homeowner wanted to follow the light throughout the day, so floor-to-ceiling glass was installed throughout to bring in brightness. “She wanted to be living inside and outside, so the house has many terraces and courtyards,” says Erb, who carefully selected materials for the living room, dining room, and sunroom, which open fully to the elements, to give a seamless flow. In the great room, a limestone fireplace serves as a focal point, encircled by neutral toned A. Rudin sofas and swivel chairs, and a spacious deAurora coffee table that conceals four ottomans for additional seating. designed so that entertaining 18 people would never feel tight,” says Erb. While most of the house stuck to a gentle palette of natural wood, cream, and soft blues, several spaces like a dynamic powder room and sumptuous library utilize richer hues. “We wanted a space that could stand on its own and be a destination,” says Erb of the library that boasts reclaimed Exquisite Surfaces flooring, indigo ROMO wallcovering, and a vast custom sectional perfect for gathering to watch sports. “It really is an opportunity for her to celebrate her family, her heritage, and her history.”

GLOSTER’S Mistral, designed by Danish creative Henrik Pedersen, is a subtle and sophisticated design. Pedersen likens Mistral to a small, standalone hideaway, and suggests combining several units, “like a small, private archipelago where you seek refuge and hang out in lazy summer days.” The base is made of a tapered plantation teak platform supported by cast aluminum legs and finished in a durable, textured powder coat in a neutral Meteor color. The seating has upholstered slimline cushions and deep back cushions, and offers a selection of pillows to complete the look. The interchangeable back panels are handwoven in a distressed Koala-colored finish, and the large base can be configured as a sofa, left or right facing chaise, or a daybed. Ambient Pebble (left), also by Pedersen, is made from a natural stone base, which comes in either carbon (Nero Marquina) or fire (Terracotta, shown here), and comes with a resilient powder coated aluminum shade in matching meteor or terracotta. At the touch of a remote control, Pebble glows with soft luminescence. The lights can be solar charged throughout the day or plugged in with a removable cable, and the LED lighting offers varying levels of illumination. 82

In his own vacation home in Saugatuck, Randy Shingledecker of RS Design Studio wanted to import a Palm Springs resort feel to the Michigan countryside. Working with landscape designer Craig Bergmann, they created a pool area surrounded by turf in a grid pattern that echoes the architectural lines of the modern home. The home’s exterior features a Florida-style flat roof with broad overhangs and large windows. The porch (above), features patio doors that open fully to the outside, merging indoor and outdoor life. A sectional and pillows from Century Furniture provide ample seating and a comfortable break from the sun. Poolside, lounge chairs and tables by JANUS et Cie are perfect for sunbathing, and beyond the pool, another seating area with chairs by OW Lee is a great place for a post-swim cocktail. The dining area is complete with umbrellas by Anacara, dining chairs by Lloyd Flanders, and a bar table by JANUS et Cie. designchicagomag.com

In an historic Millennium Park residence, designer Emil Garcia of Centaur Interiors was brought in to renovate a recently purchased apartment with an ample terrace. The focal point of the project was to create a unique outdoor oasis for almost year-round use. The design team created a custom outdoor kitchen with concealed Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove appliances for entertaining, and a five-foot integrated Galley Workstation sink. The design features a floating steel trellis which integrates lighting, heating, water misters, and a motorized retractable awning. The terrace is fully outfitted with exterior grade televisions and speakers which are controlled with smart home technology.

Designer Christa Abraham of A+H Design, along with Warwick Hunt of Studio H Landscape Architecture designed this sunny and bright outdoor space for a private residence in Southern California, outfitted with stylish furnishings by MAMAGREEN. The vibrant STRIPE collection chairs, ottomans, sectional sofas and lounge chairs add a cheerful nautical flair. The BAIA Extending Dining Table provides ample space for outdoor meals. ALLUX sun loungers in white flank the inviting pool, and when it is time for a cocktail, the custom high-top table is surrounded by ALLUX bar chairs in bright orange for a splash of contrasting color.

In a project by Molly Wood, an outdoor dining area is elegantly casual with the addition of the Lloyd Flanders’ Hamptons Teak collection dining chairs and table. The collection provides versatility, durability, and understated elegance, and includes freestanding sectional units, club chairs, arm and side chairs, occasional tables, and chaise lounges. The collection is available in 20 different finishes, including Hickory, shown here, as well as hues such as blue green sea glass and warm terracotta. 86

DEDON’S Tour du Monde continues, virtually, with these new collections imagined in spectacular style, amongst dramatic landscapes. Left to right: DALA by Stephen Burks is characterized by a weaving style so innovative that it has been successfully patented. Burks worked with colorist Giulio Ridolfo to develop new shades, including Rioja, Cuba, Bahamas, Ubud, and Ibiza. British designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby add the portable TIBBO foldable armchair, combining teak elements, a luxurious sling seat and backrest, and stainless-steel detailing. Sebastian Herkner’s award-winning MBRACE collection is beloved for its modern material mix, combining teak, woven fiber and an optional die-cast aluminum base. With KIDA, Burks has designed a hanging lounge chair that is the first collection to be wrapped rather than woven in DEDON Fiber. It features a cradle-like organic form that is open, airy, and inviting. Burks’ THE OTHERS is an anthropomorphic lantern collection that doubles as decorative art. The playful yet sophisticated line consists of a variety of hand-woven lanterns that can be used individually or arranged in totem-like stacks. designchicagomag.com
