I’m armed and ready with a veritable collection of trays. I’m pretty convinced my preoccupation with them is their aesthetic, not necessarily their function.

Quiet Living How many trays does it take to serve up a summer shindig? Hmm. I’m not quite certain. Honestly. I haven’t had people over in a long time, but I was inspired to serve up quiet living and lively design conversations in our summer issue. Now, don’t be fooled. Quiet living doesn’t preclude feistiness, but it does capture design complemented by less contrast and emphasized by more environment. Our cover story delves into a creative Houston couple whose better half is a tastemaker and owner of the beloved Round Top Inn. They’re consummate hosts who need no excuse to throw a bash! Project manager Elizabeth Echols describes her client as a freewheeling spirit who approached this renovation with an artist’s sensibility, running counterintuitive to the more traditional Texan home. Another featured renovation takes place in Paris. Architect Lukas Rungger was tasked to design the second-floor unit delivering a soothing yet energetic pied-à-terre in a building dating back to 1868. Architect Brad Lynch of Brininstool + Lynch embraces a neglected home with good bones and nurses it back to health, preserving one more midcentury home that might have been torn down.

Join Illze Muller in her musings over her family’s classic Cape Dutch farmhouse in South Africa. Her love of unpretentious style, as well as for the symmetry and the simplicity of the farmhouse, lead her to some really great design innovations while incorporating sentimental family antiques. For our summer ARCHETYPES, we’ve invited Founder and Creative Director of Artemest Ippolita Rostagno and decorative artist Caroline Lizarraga to share their favorite serving trays that run the gamut. As artisans, these women take a unique perspective and bring a critical eye for the sublimely artful. Hotel Los Enamorados Ibiza, Spain Far north on Ibiza into the wildest and most remote area of the island, Rozemarijn de Witte and Pierre Traversier have designed “Los Enamorados.” The laid-back boutique hotel is a cool and creative crash pad perched on the rocks, as beneficial as a parenthesis between sea and yoga, but also amazing, like this generous and inspiring couple. Most furnishings are from local crafts or Moroccan and Mauritanian markets. “We are passionate about flea markets from Los Angeles to Tokyo to Paris, without being afraid to leave the beaten path or eschew the avant-garde,” explains Traversier.

While the buzz of the 59th Venice Biennale with its crush of collectors, critics and the merely curious is a heady experience, real life for any artist is the time spent in the studio. And sometimes a change of scenery can really recharge the creative batteries. At a time in our history when being displaced is pronounced, the New York-based Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, of earthy, elemental paintings and objects made of sawdust, raw pigment and natural fibers, lives by his own convictions. Casa Wabi – the work retreat and exhibition space for fellow artists Sodi has built on the white sand beach of Puerto Escondido, was designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, with additional structures by local Oaxacan architects and welcomes such talents as Daniel Buren, Ugo Rondinone, Izumi Kato, and Lawrence Weiner. There are film screenings and workshops for children, and concerts performed by local musicians. Casa Wabi sits about 310 miles southwest of Mexico City, a long way from the champagne and celebrities swirling through La Serenissima. But when the party ends, the work begins. n a city sprinkled generously with accessible public spaces, there is one that famously requires a key: Gramercy Park. Thus, it is no wonder the neighborhood surrounding this rectangle of gated greenery has become synonymous with exclusivity. But there is a new place to live that is both inspired by the park’s unmistakable styling and located just down the street. The Edison Gramercy (250 East 21st Street) has been shaped by Isaac & Stern Architects and Paris Forino Design – with model apartments accoutered by stagers from ASH NYC. Individual residences range from boutique studios to four-bedroom units, with price tags starting just under $900,000 and ascending to over $6 million. The building’s limestone facade hugs oversized windows and is dotted by Juliet balconies and crowned by cascades of gardens. Of its timeless European charms, Ralph Kowalczyk of Isaac & Stern says, “A touch of elegance always remains in style.” Residents enter through the 24 hour-attended lobby with a striking Art Deco reception podium. In one’s own apartment, foyers featuring white oak herringbone flooring lead to kitchen, dining and living room spaces where oversized windows and 10 foot-high ceilings draw the eyes upward. usband and wife team Marc and Anna Cléjan, along with partner Mark Thackrah are creating something new with their Hamptonsbased firm Modern NetZero. “Buyers are starting to focus on sustainable features when buying homes. There has been a steady increase in demand, and we are seeing many other builders start to include sustainable features in their homes as well,” Marc Cléjan explains. The firm has completed 13 homes so far, and Cléjan continues, “We are presently focused on the Hamptons market to perfect our designs and business model and then we expect to look at other markets in the coming years.” He says that customers don’t typically start their search looking for a net-zero or sustainable home, but when they see the features offered in a Modern NetZero home, their eyes are opened. For this house on Laura’s Lane in East Hampton, the firm utilized a challenging L-shaped lot. Cléjan shares that the lot had been on the market for some

time with no takers, due to its awkward shape. “We took advantage of the unusual shape and created a reverse “L” house. The lower-level volume faces one section, with the upper volume facing the other section. In that way, the house makes full use of the lot.” They incorporated a large, covered patio/living area located below the cantilevered upper volume, which, Cléjan explains, is most important for today’s lifestyle. “We created an outdoor living room, which allows people to enjoy the outside with all the comforts of being inside. All our houses are focused on connecting people with the outdoors, which we accomplish with clean simple volumes incorporating tall, soffitless ceilings, large glass windows and doors, and simple natural landscaping.” This sustainable masterpiece clad in glass, cedar and stucco sits at the end of a long, crushed stone driveway. between the living space and the outdoors, where the southwestern orientation takes full advantage of glorious beach sunsets. On the first floor, a modern gas fireplace warms up the living room, and the generous dining area is ideal for entertaining. Anna Cléjan creates the interiors for the team, working with a bevy of luxury brands and staging companies like 100 Design Style to create a beautiful, finished product. The state-of-the-art kitchen features custom cabinetry by Bilotta, low maintenance Silestone countertops, and appliances by Liebherr, Bertazzoni and Bosch. A flexible, first-floor junior suite can double as a den. The outdoors beckons with a mahogany sun deck which leads to a large, covered porch complete with a gas fire bowl and plenty of room for al fresco dining and lounging. The outdoor space overlooks the expansive back yard and gunite, saltwater pool. On the second floor, the primary suite is situated at one end of the house for maximum privacy, and includes a spa-like bath and spacious his and hers closets.

In addition, there are two large en-suite bedrooms as well as a full laundry area. On the lower level, an additional bedroom suite is perfect for weekend guests. The lower level also includes a large media room, wine storage area and plenty of extra space for exercise equipment. Cléjan explains, “Net-zero is an official certification that is achieved by designing and engineering the home to generate as much energy as it consumes, thereby resulting in a net-zero carbon footprint. This means no annual energy bills for electric, heating and cooling.” The home employs geothermal heat, solar energy, efficient mechanical systems and passive solar, all of which radically reduce operating costs without any sacrifice to comfort. Cléjan reveals that this approach can save the homeowner approximately $15,000 per year in operating costs as well as an additional $30,000 savings in federal tax credits. All of this makes a Modern NetZero home stylish, comfortable, cost-effective, and a good investment in the future of the planet.

Old meets new in this dining room designed by Anne Hulcher Tollett of Hanover Avenue as part of an historic house renovation in Richmond, Virginia. Renovated by Tollett for an active family and laden with antiques, some found and some existing, this dining room is a case study on marrying contemporary pieces and old treasures that have been passed down. Originally a dark paneled room, the lacquered Ammonite Farrow & Ball paint brightened the space alongside fully reconstructed millwork. The old French chairs and a new bench surround a modern-style table alongside an antique sideboard found at auction. The antique urns, vases and Chinese dragons give nod to the family’s appreciation, as well as the slightly deconstructed rug, which gives a nod to traditional and brings the room together. Alongside the contemporary art by a local artist found by the homeowner, the room is crowned by a Mini Endless Double Pendant designed by Roll and Hill.

“They are,” he muses, “a transference of deception. We need deception, lying, to achieve a temporary sense of reverie and lucidity – one flash of clarity, even for a moment.” Rutenberg grew up in touristy Myrtle Beach, where stunning natural beauty coexists with a carnival, honky-tonk atmosphere of arcades, souvenir shops and casinos. He learned to see literally from the ground by lying on the earth to take in the view. This perspective restricts what we see to foreground and distance; what is in between must be envisioned by the viewer. The Banner paintings – which arose out of his desire for “a closer marriage between blinking, candy-colored neon lights and something more natural” – are, he explains, “a collision between the two worlds that makes a third thing.” These new environments are lush and rendered in hallucinatory colors, with obvious references to woods, marshes, swamps and rivers that feel primordial. Rutenberg tricks us into the compressed, ground-level view by depicting what is close in thicker applications of paint, while distances consist of diluted, thinly laid pigments that seem to glow with an inner light. The latter conveys an ethereality that feels otherworldly, even supernatural.

In this way, the artist’s works recall Renaissance memento mori and vanitas paintings, which carefully arranged objects that referenced human mortality (a skull, a snuffed-out candle, a spilled goblet of wine) as a way of reminding us of the ephemeral nature of our existence in the face of the Divine and the natural world. At the same time, Rutenberg observes, they were very much about those human pleasures (food, wine, music, literature and so on) that artists depicted with a luscious sensuality. Rutenberg invokes all this in an abstract modern way. “I place a lot of emphasis on the application of paint,” he describes, “on the deliciousness of paint. South Carolina is just the delivery system,” he adds of the specific locale that inspired them. “It’s really about sustaining that sense of pleasure and reverie, to bring us from the mind to the liquidity.” To that end, his carefully composed works lead the eye to that central light that emanates a trance-inducing state of wonder and magic. Indeed, they feel ripe, fecund, mysterious and hot. “It’s that seductive wet blanket of humidity that makes you feel like you have to just give up and fall to your knees.” In the presence of these stunning, hypnotic works, that seems to be exactly the right response. forumgallery.com ~ JORGE S. THE PLOT THICKENS Extraordinary clients need homes conjured from great imaginations. So when a theatrical couple wanted a dream home, they sought out architect David Iannuzzi and designer Elizabeth Fields. “The clients are young and very spirited,” describes Fields, who knows them personally. “They’re artists, and we have a really wonderful connection.” The brief was no small order. The couple wanted a home that felt modern while also fitting into a traditional Michigan community. Also on the list were central spaces for gathering with guests, with private areas set apart. Drawn to the duality of both being there and not, Iannuzzi designed a cluster of pavilions surrounded by mature forest and rolling knolls so passersby might mistake them for one big building or simply a trick of the light. Even up close, the buildings appear to be in mid-transformation, thanks to exterior materials that include parallel cedar planks accentuating narrower sides, cement fiber panels on longer sides and dark, steeply pitched, striated roofs. Guests enter mere steps from the entertaining pavilion with its soaring ceilings and banks of windows. But a hearth-like structure housing a double-sided fireplace prevents visitors from seeing inside right away. Fields also sought to surprise as she spread texture and color throughout the house. For example, the fireplace enclosure is lined with planks that echo the exterior, which

are further echoed in a sizable piece of minimalist art Fields sourced through Detroit’s Library Street Collective that delivers a welcome burst of color. Elsewhere, Fields customized a wallcovering until its florals became dramatically oversized. And a carpeted staircase cycles through different colors of the rainbow with each step. The kitchen boasts a striking wall of verdant cabinetry. “They were absolutely not going to do a white kitchen,” Fields notes. So she found a shade of green with just enough black to act as a neutral accent. Green also features in the energetic tile animating the primary bath. Fields relates that “reason and whimsy” dictated its placement, which she helped shape working alongside the tile layers. But the design is not wild color all the time. “There’s still a place for rest,” she adds. “It really is a curated balance.” “What I value the most about working with Lizzy is that she’s involved the whole way through,” describes Iannuzzi. Rather than wait for a baton-pass from architect to interior designer, Fields participates from the start, encouraging a truly integrated collaboration that has led them to work together on multiple projects. “We are really lucky to have one another,” Fields agrees. “I support David; David supports me.” This bonhomie continued with the clients during construction. “They would sometimes text me or call me, and say, ‘We just went to the site,’ ” Iannuzzi remembers. “ ‘We can’t wait to live in this house.’ ”

A batch of years and three daughters later – after Ania worked in pharmaceuticals and Ezra taught design and digital fabrication at Cornell and Pratt – the couple now runs TIMBUR, a groundbreaking digital fabrication studio. Timbur started small in New Jersey. “In 2009, I bought a CNC – a computer numerical control machine – and put it in my suburban garage in Atlantic Highlands,” notes Ezra. By 2013, he and Ania had purchased their first robot. “We buy them secondhand from the automotive industry and repurpose them,” explains Ezra. With pieces crafted using the studio’s signature stack lamination process, clients can make use of the Pantone Matching System of colors by number for discovering the ideal shade to enhance their home decor. The farmhouse/seaside feel is keenly felt in the wife’s office, which is an attached cottagelike wooden and windowed structure overlooking the internal courtyard. The space, entered through a simple wooden Dutch door that is at once rustic and sophisticated, is appointed with an antique desk and a new slender wingback chair upholstered in brushed linen. The window shades trimmed with perky ball fringe and the ceiling are glorious shades of seashell pink, a personal fave of the homeowner.

We’ve all heard houses described as “having good bones,” but some

Were it not for this acute ability to perceive beneath the surface, the fortysomething owner of this Malibu residence – a software exec with a wife and two young children – might have passed up the structure. Designed in the mid-1950s by Alfred T. “Hap” Gilman, and added onto in the 1970s and again in 2004, it had not been well maintained and suffered from a multitude of infelicities: crumbling floors of slate tile interspersed with areas of carpet-covered concrete, two fireplaces set into stone walls that blocked spectacular views of the Santa Monica Mountains and, recalls architect Brad Lynch of Brininstool + Lynch, “an HVAC system on the roof that made it look like a shopping mall.” His job, describes Lynch, was “giving the client the feeling they had when they came into the house, but making it livable for many years to come.” He started by taking off the roof and saving whatever wood beams could be salvaged. There were five rustic stone walls, but the two with fireplaces were neither structural nor original, so out they went. The three remaining walls were disassembled so builder Kyle Williams could frame them properly and better waterproof them. Then, Williams adds, “I worked with the owner and Brad to place the rocks back in a way that recreated the original look.” This strategy increased fenestration along the rear facade, estimates Williams, by about 35%, which required extra steel support. Lynch reconfigured the interior and, he notes, “We found ways to add onto it, making it more gracious and functional without being obvious,” such as extending both the kitchen and primary bedroom. They poured terrazzo floors throughout, running them outside around the pool with an acid-etched texture. This enhanced the indoor-outdoor connection.

Then the team put the roof back on. And here is where a little X-ray vision would reveal an incredible feat: within its slim 7.5-inch profile, describes Lynch, “we packed in insulation, HVAC, electrical and plumbing, as well as a fire-suppressant system.” Everything had to be meticulously thought out, like a puzzle. It’s held up with the salvaged beams augmented by others – all made of Douglas fir. “I don’t like to have anything but lights in the ceiling,” adds Lynch, who left a larger gap between the slats on opposite lengths of ceiling to serve as supply and return vents. Rooms are outfitted with contemporary furnishings and era-appropriate accents. Interior cabinets and millwork separate spaces along the length of the enfilade of spaces. These, observes Lynch, “are all new, but with a nod to the midcentry modern design of the house. They evoke a feeling without being literal.” The home turned out so beautifully that the client, for whom Lynch had done five previous projects (mostly in the Midwest), now spends most of his time here, nestled into a canyon and surrounded by lush gardens designed by Pamela Burton & Company. Thanks to this sensitive reimagining, the bones of this Gilman jewel are actually stronger. And something you don’t even need X-ray vision to see.

She liked the idea of recycling the old house materials. The mangaris porch floor was sustainably harvested, the shingles, railing and trim were made from locally grown trees, and the paint is zero VOC. We added pots planted with indigenous spekboom, dubbed “the miracle plant” for its carbon-storing capabilities. There are fully-grown trees in each of the backyards of the alleyway’s row cottages, and each is a different species. Because of the outer fence it is hard for grass to grow in this space, so I put in a step entrance to make the space seem larger. I also painted everything white to add light, making this space an urban sanctuary filled with green plants. BOTTOMS UP! A well-made martini. 3 DESIGNER: Phillip Thomas, Phillip Thomas Inc. PROJECT LOCATION: Bellport, NY DESIGN DETAILS: This special property serves as a relaxing refuge for a multigenerational family. Comfort and function were at the top of the list so family members of all ages could enjoy the home without worry of anything being too precious or high maintenance. This porch area off the kitchen is the central gathering spot, so we really wanted the spaces to flow freely into one another, marrying the interior and exterior together seamlessly. BOTTOMS UP! The signature cocktail of this home is Planter’s Punch, with Jamaican rum, fresh lime, and sugar cane juice.

The porch provides a fresh interpretation of a primitive modern space that still maintains the original design elements of the farmhouse. Nature will take over and complete the form created by the steel frame, with wild roses filtering the sunlight and connecting the building to the garden. BOTTOMS UP! It is over one hundred years old, and I had it painted in a custom color to match my oversized planter and bench in my yard. I wanted an element that would create personality and show a distinct character as people drove by. I’m told by friends and family that they see this door all over Instagram in the background of influencers’ photos! The plants add an element of privacy. BOTTOMS UP! I love a cold glass of Veuve Clicquot champagne on a warm day. I keep it chilled with ice AND water, which keeps it much colder than ice alone.

But we ended up creating a full outside living room that provides everything the family needs to enjoy wonderful moments together, including a fireplace and a TV area. The interiors are very connected to the exterior, with a bar inside accessible to the outside when hosting large events. The plants add an element of privacy. BOTTOMS UP! A glass of rosé!

The clients love to entertain and wanted to make this a cozy, relaxing spot. For a cohesive look, we incorporated the same color scheme as the interior, which has light floors, black-and-white decor and a warm, darker-toned ceiling. Overall, the design was to feature a neutral palette while having fun and bringing in some whimsy with color. BOTTOMS UP! Vodka martini with a lemon twist.

DESIGNER: Kovac Design Studio PROJECT LOCATION: La Quinta, CA DESIGN DETAILS: This vacation home, located in La Quinta’s fabled Madison Club, was designed for a sophisticated client who loves entertaining friends and family. The residence is composed of a main living space surrounded by guest casitas where visitors may retreat for a private escape. Each casita contains its own terrace and fire pit, as well as a bath with an indoor/outdoor shower, mini fridge, and bar to enjoy while taking in dramatic desert views. The terraces are separated by a sliding fence, which can be closed for privacy or opened to enlarge the space. BOTTOMS UP! In a desert retreat such as this, what could be better than a mojito, caipirinha, or glass of natural wine?

Originally a four-square simple farmhouse, the materials for the porch are in keeping with the original architecture. We added gas lanterns for old-world ambience, and I love the contrast of the copper lanterns flanking the contemporary steel door. We often stage impromptu dinner parties on the porch or pull up extra side chairs for larger groups to gather for conversation and cocktails. BOTTOMS UP! Rosé all day is the perfect porch drink and is a nice tie-in to the pink accents just inside my front door.

Authenticity varies by degree. There’s the period-perfect approach, in which furniture, fabrics and paint color are pegged to a specific time and style. There’s homage, hinting knowingly at a look of the past, but making no commitment to historical accuracy. And then there’s something else altogether, in which honoring the essential identity of a home – beach house, desert adobe, suburban bungalow – is what it’s all about. When designer Rita Donahoe of Rita Chan Interiors was engaged to aid a Los Angeles-based couple furnish their Santa Ynez getaway – a nondescript, 1970s house transformed into a chic compound by Dylan Henderson of Salt Architecture in Santa Barbara County – she knew immediately that the job required more than some smart shopping. Appreciative of the home’s ranch-like aspect (the previous owners had actually built and restored carriages on the property) and the surrounding acreage (which now includes a vineyard), Donahoe knew she had to tweak the current owners’ taste for the contemporary. “The home didn’t really feel connected with the land or the Santa Ynez lifestyle,” she notes. Donahoe’s neutral palette is especially effective here, playing as it does with the abundance of natural light pervading the home. Earth tones underscore the fact that the house sits amid five acres in the shadow of the Figueroa Mountains. “We wanted to honor the fact that they had a modern sensibility but push them to something a little more rustic.” Not surprisingly, that did not include hanging a come-and-get-it triangle outside the kitchen.

“We’re not pretending that we’re riding horses and herding sheep,” deadpans Donahoe. “For me, it was all about materials. Leather, reclaimed wood. Paneling, but painted white. And vintage pieces for a rustic charm.” Sustainability drove Donahoe’s sourcing. “We really tried to make sure we avoided the mass-manufactured, quick- ship scenario. Aside from vintage pieces, almost everything was made-to-order, and most of it was made in Southern California.” Donahoe turned to Nickey Kehoe and Lawson Fenning for key furniture pieces, and Peter Dunham Textiles for upholstery. And she practiced some repurposing on her own, salvaging a workbench from a former shop on the property and using it for a vanity in a guest bathroom. Bringing in a long antique bench to anchor the entryway, and keeping an upright piano the homeowners had thought of jettisoning, all give the home a sense of being well grounded. Teasing out the home’s DNA while deftly avoiding cliché, Donahoe has created sophisticated spaces that express an unmistakable sense of place. GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY A few years ago, after decades of weekending in Manhattan, Westchester empty nesters finally bought their own pied-à-terre in a newly developed Greenwich Village midrise – the fulfillment of a lifelong wish. “I’ve been visiting the city since I was young to see theatre, music, art and entertainment,” the client describes. Impressed with the portfolio of interior designer Larysa Sendich of Nesta Studio, as well as with her professionalism and upbeat attitude, the new homeowners took the advice of a friend and hired Sendich to tailor the space to their personalities. In contrast to the deep-brown, green and maroon tones in their longtime single-family home, they envisioned a simpler, lighter design. “As you get older in life, you want less stuff,” she explains. “I wanted Larysa to stretch my imagination.” Seeking to create a quiet respite in the heart of the bustling, often noisy city, Sendich selected a palette of soft colors rendered in subtle textures. Although neutral, the walls throughout, for example, are clad in a textural matte plaster that appears to shift in tone with the changing light. “It adds another layer, and the light bouncing off it kind of moves your eye around the space,” Sendich explains. The shimmery walls contribute to the almost gallery-like feeling in the long foyer hallway, where a circular mirror with a silver application by a local craftsperson hangs over a handmade bench combining imperfect stone, steel and gilded wood – two of the many bespoke pieces woven throughout the home’s design. “I was lucky to work with a client who has such a great eye and appreciation of craft and art,” Sendich says. Rather than adhering to convention by designing separate areas for living and dining, Sendich created a salon-style space with three distinct seating areas that better suit her clients’ needs. In a corner near the window, for example, a custom chaise in light blue creates a spot to relax and read, or to enjoy a casual meal at a small, wood-topped bistro table with vintage Swedish modern chairs. Wallcoverings also play a key role. Linen-clad walls foster a calming ambiance in the primary bedroom, where custom oak side tables with ebonized frames flank a headboard covered in upholstered silk. Paired with an elegant, handblown pendant light in a cloud-like shape, a woven silk wallcovering likewise softens the weighty stone sink in the sophisticated powder room. “New York can be hard and difficult, and I wanted to create a calm space for them,” Sendich admits. Indeed, the result gets high marks from the happy owners, who compare it to a high-end hotel. They are quick to give all the credit to Sendich, who never stopped until they were satisfied. When a custom chair didn’t sit quite right, for example, she sent it back for modifications straightaway. As a result, it – and everything else – is perfect. “This place has such a special feeling,” the client remarks. “I feel so happy to be here.”

Homeowner Illze Muller’s fertile imagination is working overtime reconceptualizing the family’s classic Cape Dutch farmhouse

It may be mainly the complaint of folks who find the world whirling too quickly, but there is some truth to the fact that these days, the stuff of the past is more often jettisoned than cherished. Nobody wants Grandma’s dishes, or Dad’s old desk. And when family history can be neatly contained digitally, an attic full of stuff seems unnecessary, if not excessive. But in the right hands, the past can be a living thing, a light that illuminates the present, not a burdensome shadow.

Uitkyk, South Africa South Africans Illze and Wouter Muller – and their three grown children – live on a dairy farm that has been in his family since the 1820s. Their home is a classic Cape Dutch house, built by the brother of Wouter’s great-grandfather in 1840. “I love Cape Dutch architecture for its clean lines and unpretentious style, as well as for the symmetry and the simplicity,” shares Illze, who good-humoredly describes herself as “a housewife who fixes up sheds on the farm when I’m not gardening or dreaming up new designs.” Dreaming up one of those new designs, Illze spearheaded a transformation of the family home from a place of formality and small rooms to one that is chic and spacious. She relocated the kitchen from the back of the house to a larger, crowd-friendly area closer to the action. “This is now everyone’s favorite room,” confides Illze, “where we spend most of our time talking, cooking and having a great time with our friends.” The reconfiguration also allowed for a greater separation between the home’s public and private spaces. Upstairs, she opened up an unused attic space, greatly expanding the usefulness of that floor, which now comprises a study, office and guest room with en suite bath. With no partition walls and the timber frame and thatched roof visible, this wide-open interior telegraphs an elemental sense of shelter. Throughout the project, Illze was determined to respect the historical character of the house while making it functionally and aesthetically more congruent with contemporary life. Eager to create a closer link to the garden, she replaced three windows on the main floor with doors of the same size, which maintained the visual balance of the exterior. Illze exercised that same combination of imagination and respect for the past when she tackled an 1850s outbuilding that had previously served as a workshop and shearing shed. “It was one very long, big room, with attics at both ends, when it was built,” relates Illze. “Later, walls were added and a ceiling was put in. For the renovation, we took away all those things that were not original.” Window openings that had been covered over long ago were reopened and fitted with new, handmade frames. “Every hinge, lock, bolt, window and door that had to be replaced was made by hand, using reclaimed materials as much as possible,” notes Illze. Change comes slowly on a farm, and now that Illze has transformed her family’s property so effectively and empathetically, chances are it won’t require much attention for a while. But when that day arrives, the design she dreamed up today will no doubt be appreciated as another telling layer of the farm and the history of the lives lived here.

With the walls and ceiling gone, the shed is now a wonderfully roomy place, an enviably attractive guest quarters open to the highly pitched roof. When it came time to introduce a bathroom, Illze opted for a steel and glass element to separate it from the rest of the interior. “I didn’t want to put in something more permanent that is difficult to remove,” she explains. “Now I can easily change it again if I want to.”

hen tastemaker and owner of the beloved Round Top Inn set out to build her new family home in Houston overlooking the Bayou, she made one thing very clear: she was up for anything. Like most start-from-scratch home construction, the owner’s vision for their home evolved as the project progressed from the initial cool-meets-farmhouse inspiration to a full-blown haven evoking a freewheeling spirit and cultivated artistic taste. “The client was really inspired by the modern farmhouse, and she wanted to incorporate a lot of her artistic flair and love of color,” describes project manager Elizabeth Echols. “A lot of Houston clients stay traditional in their palettes and don’t necessarily enjoy the process of picking things out, but she treated her house as an art project, which opened endless possibilities of different layering techniques.” One element that didn’t change, however, was the home’s function. The homeowners sought to cultivate a lived-in sensibility designed to immediately put guests at ease, while also withstanding the spills and accidents of the couple’s young children. As the owners are the consummate hosts who need no excuse to throw a bash, they needed large communal spaces with lots of seating to host family gatherings for holidays and celebrations. One thing that the homeowner was not short on was ideas – for example, bringing a sample of a New Age-style, holographic deer-antler wallpaper to their very first design meeting. From then on – and for every weekly meeting thereafter during the nearly three-year endeavor – it was off to the artistic races. “She really wanted to push the envelope,” explains Clint Johnson, principal at Newberry Architecture. “I mean, when a client comes to you with something like that holographic wallpaper, it makes the rest of being creative easy.” In a reprieve from the usual white-box kitchens, the expansive, light-drenched space is defined by bold textures, technicolor treasures and custom pieces, starting with the oven hood, a vintage find from the client. “It’s actually an Italian altar with original pastel colors that really inspired her, and she knew she wanted to use it somewhere,” describes Echols, adding that she came up with using it as a vent hood. “So we flipped it upside down and then turned it into a vent, hollowed it out and made it work.” The altar is flanked by white custom cabinets with glass panels and brass finishes on either side to complete a sense of flow and cohesion. Another dazzling antique find is the hardwood flooring throughout the kitchen, with the few leftover panels repurposed in the upstairs wet bar, while several other varieties and shades of vintage wood grace the home to deliver bespoke, artisanal details.

Going against the grain is often an artist’s stock in trade, whether that means developing a new technique, exploring unusual materials or embracing an uneasy subject matter. And while the likes of Kandinsky, Warhol or Damien Hirst rate high in “shock and awe,” individuality is not always steeped in transgression. Not every outlier is a radical, but that doesn’t mean they are running with the pack, either. Przemyslaw Lasak has not taken an easy route. As a ceramist, he occupies a position several notches below painter in the art practice hierarchy. And as a figurative sculptor, he no doubt seems out of step to those for whom Damián Ortega, Kate MccGwire or Richard Deacon define the contemporary standard. But Lasak has set his own course. As a youth in Poland, he was taken with painting and drawing; the last thing he wanted to be was a “potter.” That changed after high school, when he enrolled at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, which operates the only universitylevel department of ceramics and glass in Poland. “Wrocław has a great faculty, excellent workshops and teachers,” notes Lasak. “It was there that I majored in ceramics and connected with it for the rest of my artistic life.”

Lasak’s most significant forms are the life-size figures he makes from casts. Working in multiples, his first series was Mercenaries, for which he used his own body as the template. “For me, a cast is a mannequin,” he explains. “It accepts everything. I can transform it and give it a different meaning.” As a mute impression of a physical reality, a cast, he suggests, is both familiar and alien. “Although they are almost perfect reflections of ourselves, sometimes you have to look closely to see the original model in the cast. Because character is gestures, words, movement.” The artist’s latest collection is NIEwinne (NOTguilty/Innocent), which addresses the emancipation of women and the illusion of empowerment. “Women have to take to the streets again and fight for their rights, because some ‘wise’ men have decided that they know better,” he asserts. Lasak, who has long been a professor at his alma mater, lives and works in an austere, functionalist compound approximately nine miles from the center of Wrocław. The property comprises a single-story, three-bedroom residence designed by Archicom Studio, and a separate ceramics studio conceived by Lasak himself. The studio is like a small factory, and the living space expresses an appreciation for spareness. Together, they seem a telling reflection of a man for whom work is truly paramount. “There is something strange about art,” Lasak muses. “We are able to sacrifice everything for it – our lives, loved ones, friends – just to be in the studio and create. We are convinced that what we are doing is right.”

L A K E M A G G I O R E , I TA LY Folly. A fine word for the unreasonable or capricious, it has, like dastardly or palaver, fallen into (dare we say it?) desuetude. Architectural follies, the built equivalent of the nonsensical, seem an expression of the past too. While contemporary examples such as Thomas Heatherwick’s Vessel in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards emerge from time to time, the temples, towers and pavilions that once graced the landscape of great estates are as out-of-time as the great estates themselves. But 45 minutes from Milan, in a forest of oak and chestnut trees, lie a pair of villas – aptly named La Foleia – whose neoclassical profile and small scale echo the whimsy and romance of another era. Owned by Milanese natives Gemma Richards and Niccoló Rignano, the double villas were built in the 1980s and occupied for many years by a philosopher and a botanist. Separated by a small, human-made lake, one served as the couple’s residence, the other a retreat for reading and writing. Master horticulturist Gianfranco Giustina, who has long maintained the gardens of Lake Maggiore’s Isola Bella and Isola Madre (owned by the aristocratic Borromeo family) was brought on to elevate the natural beauty of the property. When a family alerted Niccoló that La Foleia was for sale, neither he nor Gemma were sure it was for them. After working and traveling around the world, the two had returned to their hometown and were happy in Milan, where they got into the hospitality business with a roster of vacation properties. “But once we saw the photos, we knew we should definitely go take a look,” admits Gemma. The former owners were now nonagenarians and had not been able to keep the villas or garden up as they once had.

“Even though it was really run down and we were seeing it on a cold, gray winter day,” continues Gemma, “the atmosphere was just so magical.” Once they acquired La Foleia, the couple set about transforming the Villa Ottagonale (where the philosopher sat with his books and deep thoughts) into a second usable residence with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen. While freshening up the Villa Padiglione across the water, they discovered fanciful frescoes that had been hidden for years behind bookcases. When it came to furnishing the revived buildings, Gemma and Niccoló opted for comfortable pieces of a traditional cast, most of which they purchased at the flea markets of the Piedmont. “These houses had such great character we didn’t want to put any modern, new elements inside,” shares Gemma. “We really wanted to maintain their energy and soul and integrate objects and furnishings that had been loved and used in the past.” When too well-loved, they gave their finds some TLC, such as reupholstering a Duchesse en Bateau chaise lounge with Pierre Frey fabric. Luckily, the couple was able to entice Giustina to return and restore the garden he had so beautifully orchestrated years before. Today, lotuses and water lilies adorn the spring-fed lake, and cypresses and fruit trees form an artful frame around this unique compound. Dragonflies zip through the air by day, and come evening, herons alight. When the last of the sun forms a fractured mosaic on the water and a glass of wine brings gentle relaxation, one might believe that life could always be so. It is folly, of course, but what’s a little madness now and then?

A little doesn’t always go a long way. An unadorned white wall or a single chair, positioned just so, can read like an end in itself, rather than an expressive moment or a sharp solution to a design problem. But there are times when a minimalist approach can be mighty pleasing, when restraint can be revelatory. Overlooking the Bay of Naples with the island of Ischia in the distance, the getaway home of Roman architect Massimo Adario is part of a larger villa that belonged to his great-grandparents. Originally the house of the farmer who maintained the property – including its lemon tree grove – the structure had suffered neglect in recent years. Abandoned, it was crumbling when Adario acquired it. But, expert at residential design and sympathetic to history and context, he did not hesitate to revive it. “The aspects that most fascinated me about this house, which has the typical structure of the ancient country villas of the Sorrento Peninsula, are the high roof vaults and the thick walls made of local stone,” shares the architect. “I highlighted these two elements, creating a light-blue band – which recalls the color of the sky – that regularizes the thick, irregular walls, while at the same time, enhancing the verticality of the interior spaces.”

The large, unadorned ceiling vaults, painted white, create both spaciousness and the sense of an enveloping canopy. The pervasive roominess of the home stems, too, from an almost sparse arrangement of furniture, which includes bamboo pieces by Tito Agnoli that reminds Adario of childhood vacations by the sea. Lighting pieces – including Achille Castiglioni’s Parentesi lamp and Joe Colombo’s Coupè – provide a more contemporary note. Adario-designed tiles arrayed around the kitchen and across a bedroom wall (produced by the famed ceramists of Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi Coast) generate a subtly kinetic effect, like light bouncing off water. The interiors open to a broad terrace lined with two long masonry benches and brass-framed tables topped with local tiles. The home’s relationship to the outdoors, the surrounding landscape and the sea beyond is central to the impression it makes. Exercising a considered but light touch in these rooms, Adario defers to light and air, to scent and sound. This place, threaded with memory, seems almost elemental itself.

Such original artwork is a crucial thread in the rich mosaic Carretero has created. Mesmerized by fine art photographer Karen Knorr’s dreamy image of a regal avian creature in a historic Moroccan castle, for example, Carretero placed it atop a copper-tinted mirrored accent wall in the light-filled living room. “The mirror expands the windows to the west side of the apartment,” he describes, noting it casts a beautiful reflection when the sun sets. Each evokes nostalgic, even life-changing, memories. Leaning into the womblike environment’s lack of windows, Carretero covered the ceiling with a wood-veneered wall covering and enhanced the walls with a grass cloth ( both by Phillip Jeffries ) in the same tone as the sofa fabric and velvet draperies that close off the space. “Injecting it with this deep color gives you a sense of space,” he explains. Acquired at Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, on the other hand, the area rug with its Arabesque pattern evokes a powerful sense of place.

During her regular meditation practice, lifelong New Yorker Robin Nijankin slowly rubs a mallet around the edge of a “singing bowl” to produce entrancing melodic sounds that are believed to promote healing and eliminate bad energy. “I’m sending the whole world good vibes,” she says, pointing to the throngs of people streaming by on the iconic High Line elevated park six floors below her. “[This technique] reaches my soul and clicks with my inner self.” Exploring different cultures and religions has the same effect on Nijankin, whose travels through Morocco and Egypt inspired the design of her apartment in a new Chelsea development – the latest in a long list of neighborhoods she has inhabited over the years. Taking the recommendation of an entrepreneur she met at a health and wellness resort, Nijankin asked interior designer Juan Carretero of Capital C Interiors to bring her exotic, spice-infused visions to life. “Robin is passionate, dreamy and romantic in her ideas,” Carretero describes. The result is, in a word, atmospheric. Emblazoned with a handpainted tree mural, the private elevator doors open to a dazzling foyer with textural Venetian plaster walls and a gold-leafed ceiling that together took an army of skilled craftsmen weeks to create. “It transports you into somewhere kind of mystical and a bit spiritual,” Carretero notes, pointing to the reflection of the flickering candlelight in the gilded ceiling. An equally pictorial, Moroccan-inspired wallcovering likewise reinforces the Moroccan motif in the elegant primary bedroom. “It’s like exotic Babylonian gardens,” Carretero describes. Fringed bedside pendants and elegant bedding add to the sense of opulence. While Nijankin has designed many spaces on her own and JUAN C A RRE T E R O

has confidence in her abilities, she can’t say enough about collaborating with Carretero, who introduced her to new ideas and made the project a lot more fun. “He’s a fabulous man,” she says, recalling their many shopping excursions. “Every time I walk into this place, I’m just overwhelmed.”

It was a busy day in the heart of Cape Town when Sumien Brink – a former magazine editor with an unerring instinct for recognizing potential in a space – entered the incongruously named Impala House with its modest but beguiling pink marble foyer. The elevator opened directly into the space, stopping her in her tracks. “I was flabbergasted – I had no idea proportions like this still existed in the city,” she states. But she wasn’t to be deterred, nor was interior designer Etienne Hanekom. He first installed Perspex corrugated dividers to create two bedrooms – a smart, inexpensive way to carve up what was previously an office with only rudimentary bathrooms and a tiny kitchen. To provide focus in the entry area, one of Guy Tillim’s striking photographs, taken on Avenue du Président Léopold Sedar Senghor in Dakar, Senegal, was enlarged to become “wall art.” Most of Tillim’s images are photographed in troubled parts of Africa and resonate deeply with Sumien, who remembers visiting Mozambique on blissfully carefree holidays as a child but being aware of simmering unrest and the start of the architectural decay that still exists today. A self-confessed magazine junkie with an unstoppable weakness for books, Sumien has cleverly book-ended her living area with sturdy shelving and an outsize olive-green velvet sofa that invites hours of contemplation on fashion, architecture, interiors, art, ceramics – practically every subject under the sun. Each book and magazine is treasured and filled with memories of a lifetime in publishing.

Never inclined to collect just one of anything, Sumien has decorated her primary bedroom walls with a row of illustrations from Tina Berning’s book 100 Girls on Cheap Paper, and favorite Lucie de Moyencourt’s drawings of classic Cape Town landscapes line the back of the display dressers dividing the living room from the kitchen. An old poster of the The Butcher Boys by Jane Alexander is another clue of her collecting style – you’ll find a precious print on the wall in the living room and a sculpture under a glass cloche in a beautifully styled corner. Etienne’s redesigned industrial stainless-steel kitchen is a welcoming and delightful jumble of succulents and plants that jostle for space alongside gleaming copper appliances and trusty frying pans. Sourced at a catering supplier, they are the perfect foil for piles of ceramics and inherited platters, pots and plates – enough to host a party at the drop of a hat around the long black Gregor Jenkin dining table. Etienne’s industrial lighting – gently looped black cords with exposed globes – makes the entire space glow at night. It wasn’t long after this that Sumien began to pursue a lifelong dream of her own: she created her first range of handprinted Flora and Fauna pure linen tea towels to be printed and handsewn just in time for Christmas. Each one, a work of art, celebrates historical illustrations of plants and animals and comes wrapped in a handstitched gift “envelope.” A creative purist at heart, one would expect nothing less from this talented former editor who started out in fashion but dedicated most of her life to creating the beautiful pages of the country’s best-loved decor and food magazines.

For all its historic charm, for all its impossibly romantic byways, Paris is really a modern city, whipped into shape in the 19th century by Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann at the behest of Emperor Napoleon III. The broad boulevards lined with seemingly identical apartment buildings didn’t win rave reviews from every quarter back in the day, but over time, they have come to signify the city as much as Notre Dame and the Louvre. Throughout the apartment, Massimi sought to respect the history within its walls while making room for a new narrative. Embracing the existing architecture and treating it as support for subtle mediation, Massimi allowed the past and present to speak simultaneously. In the kitchen, for example, she retained (but respectfully redesigned) a wonderful expanse of stained-glass windows and installed a very contemporary island crafted of walnut and marble. For the most part, white walls and trim rule here, generating a restful, light-bouncing backdrop. But in the primary bedroom, Massimi opted for a custom treatment from Redfield & Dattner, specialists in creative hand-painted walls. Evocative of sunlight breaking through after a thunderstorm, the atmospheric blue-and-gold image adds a soothing depth to the space. And while these crisp, uncluttered interiors are far from any decor Haussmann would have known, if he walked these rooms today, he would have no doubt still recognized the abiding style of his time.
