A Not So Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

W

e had big ambitions for this special showhouse issue; we wrapped up 2019 with two houses completed and five more to produce by June of 2020. Alas, we were sidelined like the rest of the world by the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of openings, we had delays. Instead of viewing wall coverings, we were checking for face coverings. Instead of guests touring from space to space, we were monitoring 6-foot space separations. We had timed entries for admissions and large groups of visitors turned into parties of two. We learned about contact tracing, signing waivers, and where to place hand sanitizer stations. And on it went.

In all, more than 100 designers and 500 brands refused to let a pandemic stop the shows from going on. Yeah, the rules had drastically changed, but we learned a lot about the human spirit and in the end the reaction to seeing these homes was always the same. Great design always has the power to amaze and delight.

The Grand Tour

N

othing brings the design community together like a showhouse. Talented designers each bring their own sense of style, from clean modern minimalism to over-the-top, no-holds-barred maximalism. Whether in a newly constructed masterpiece or an historic home, when opening day comes, the public queues up to tour these spectacular confections. Besides being aspirational and inspirational, showhouses are just plain fun. Groups of merrymakers wander through, oohing and aahing over a flamboyant chandelier, a bright, graphic wallcovering, vibrant color palettes, and furnishings that run the gamut from elegant to quirky. In light of world events, this all sounds like a distant fantasy, and to some degree, it is. But in spite of all the restrictions brought about by a global pandemic, the community persevered and created an abundance of world class design destinations in support of some very worthy causes. And since we know that many were not able to actually view the houses in person, we created this tribute issue devoted to the remarkable people who created these remarkable places.

12

VOLUME 1

From California to New Jersey, teams of people (safely) converged: architects, designers, craftspeople, artists, workrooms, paperhangers, painters, contractors, and of course the brands, all went above and beyond to furnish these showhouses through the logistical challenge of this annus horribilis. Our gratitude and appreciation go out to everyone who went the extra mile to get the job done. To be honest, we are in awe of each and every one of you. In these pages, you will see the work of your favorite designers, and be introduced to new talent from across this nation. Welcome to ASPIRE SHOWHOUSE, our “Grand Tour” of world class design.

“The hallway/entry was ideal for me to have fun with the space, and to take you on a journey. I truly believe there are no small spaces.”

“Being in High Point, if we ended up needing something at the last minute, the entire home furnishings industry was at our doorstep!”

– David Santiago

– Scot Meacham

“I pushed a little more modern edge in the space which is how I have been leaning the last few years, but really got to put it on full display here.” – Leslie Moore

Living Room This room is a tribute to Mary and Carter Dalton who built this historic home in Langdon's hometown of High Point in 1914. The space balances feminine and masculine elements to create a comfortable yet stylish living room, perfect for entertaining friends and family or spending cozy winter evenings at home by the fire. The designer mixed blush tones with darker, more masculine colors like charcoal gray, along with her new furniture collection for Fairfield, as well as lighting for KAS and Crystorama, resulting in a chic living room that suits both the man and the lady of the house. Dining Study For a room that is equal parts dining room, family office, and household nerve center, designer Scot Meacham Wood created a multi-layered space, anchored by a vivid palette of blue and white, offset with unexpected pink accents. The room is a showcase for Wood’s York Check wall covering and Camille Floral print, as well as a selection of upholstered pieces by the designer.

HIGH POINT — DESIGNERS SHOWHOUSE — DALTON-BELL-CAMERON HOUSE

he Dalton-Bell-Cameron house, built in 1914, was one of the most unique homes in High Point, North Carolina. Built in the Craftsman style, the house was quite different from its more traditional Victorian and Colonial neighbors. But the pioneering structure was stricken by two major fires—one in 1997 and the other in 2012—and by 2017 it was in such a forlorn state that the city ordered it be to be either repaired or demolished. At that point, the High Point Preservation Society stepped in to save it, just prior to it being sold to Rick Lewis and his wife Margaret Bell Lewis, who had once lived there as a child. Following the purchase, the Society and the Junior League of High Point moved quickly to help with the goal of restoring the home. To assist the new owners with some of the restoration costs, they decided to raise funds by creating a showhouse in the historic home. Mary Powell DeLille of the Junior League of High Point—also a former owner of the home—says, “This was a passion project for the whole community—keeping an historic house alive. What had been a home that was literally crumbling to the ground is now standing proud again. This house always stood for pioneering design, but now it stands for resilience and strength of community too.” After the home’s architectural bones were restored, the JLHP and their new partner, ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME, enlisted a diverse group of 21 extraordinary designers to bring the interiors back to life, as well. What came to be was a vibrant house full of spectacular details like dramatic tented rooms, lush lacquered blue ceilings, grand-scale ikat tile, floor-to-ceiling canopy beds, and bold wallpapers in bright red trellis, handsome blue plaid and moody florals. The Dalton-Bell-Cameron house is once again a pioneer in both architecture and interior design. Funds raised from the showhouse benefitted the projects of the Junior League of High Point.

Writer's Nook This small closet in the dining room has been transformed into a jewel-box corner nook for the lady of the house. Taking inspiration from Virginia Woolf's "A Room Of One’s Own,” the designers created an escape for penning inspired prose. The room has built-in shelving and a skirted desk dressed in root cellar designs' Orchid Topiary botanical wallpaper in cornflower blue, and Thistle Toile in cadet blue with shelving in a pop of lime green.

Up and Down Hallways Designer David Santiago debuts his "Hospidential" concept: a unique fusion of traditional, unexpected and curated styles of hospitality and residential. His designs are a celebration of color, graphic design, and movement with curated and commissioned works of art and furnishings. The space is infused with the energy of color from the Strictly Santi trademarked wallpaper and lighting collections, transforming the foyer, stairs, and hallways into a fresh new take on the Arts and Crafts movement. 24

The Butler's Pantry In this small but high traffic space, Lauren Nicole used an abstract wallpaper with bright colors to provide an interesting backdrop for the open shelving, which gives the tiny corner an expansive feel. The cabinets are finished in Devon, her custom color for Benjamin Moore. The golden finishes in the shelving and lighting, and a touch of acrylic in the hardware, add a touch of timeless flair.

The Den A place for the family to unplug, enveloped in an array of soothing blues and whites, this cozy space is ideal for everything from morning coffee to homework in the evenings. It is a dedicated spot for this family of four to come together and leave technology behind. Board games and books take the place of laptops and phones in this place to recharge the old-fashioned way.

The Study was designed around wallpaper inspired by Andrea Monath Schumacher's grandmother, who studied in Paris with Leger and Dali in the 1930s and spent 40 years as an artist. The designer brought the lush outdoor surroundings inside with botanical and animal prints. This study is a cozy place to curl up in the window seat and read a book or gather with friends around the conversation-height table.

“We stepped a bit out of our comfort zone in hopes to stay true to the heart of this historic High Point home and infuse a Southern traditional vibe into our launderette.” – Liz Goldberg

ELISSA GRAYER Elissa Grayer Interior Design

Powder Room Natural luxury with a graphic modern twist comes from the textured walls wrapped in handcrafted paper and banana bark. A seamless span of rich, dark quartz grounds the design, while accents of navy, pearl, and glints of gold make for a strikingly sophisticated space.

Lylah's Petite Launderette Liz Goldberg brings Mother Nature into the laundry with a lush Designer's Guild floral wallpaper and bespoke wood grain cabinetry, evoking a forest glade. Drawing inspiration from age-old Japanese raku pottery and traditional herringbone walking paths, Temple Brick tiles in three shades of grey modernize the space, which is designed as Lylah’s escape, making her daily responsibilities feel less bothersome.

Upstairs Hall Bath A skirted vanity and Roman shade with simple trim and tailored details help soften this bath, making it warm and inviting. The tone-on-tone marble pairs perfectly with subtle pink accents, resulting in a soothing and sophisticated retreat.

The Guest Bedroom blurs the lines between contemporary and traditional, with strong masculine undertones. The design envelops in rich, tailored textiles by Clarence House. The sophisticated sanctuary is punctuated by two antique beds, and deep, sultry hues are juxtaposed with the soft, fullness of the draperies in patterns by Frank Ponterio for Clarence House and streamlined hardware from Fabricut. The ornate Theodore Alexander mirror provides a unique focal point and helps to amplify light throughout the space. The debonair palette of neutral, monochromatic tones conveys warmth and strength, making this layered guest bedroom a place of respite and reflection.

CHRISTOPHER KENNEDY SHOWHOUSE

A Sense of Place TEXT BY JILL SIERACKI PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVE ADAMS [UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED]

M

otivated by the success of his recurring Palm Springs showhouse, the Christopher Kennedy Compound, the eponymous designer was lured to Turlock, California by a homeowner looking to create an exciting interiors experience in a classic American town. “I don’t think style is just reserved for the big cities and coasts,” says Christopher Kennedy, who collaborated with 15 other designers on a 3,200-square-foot midcentury residence that—following its October 2019 show dates—would become a family’s home. “The designers did the best of themselves and they also made it perfect for the homeowner. Our showhouses tend to be very livable, while still being very inspiring.” Funds raised from the project went to support Dancing with the Turlock Stars, a massive charity event that benefits local grief counseling center Jessica’s House and family advocacy organization Miracles for Kids. Approximately 1,000 visitors from Northern and Central California toured the fourbedroom, three-and-a-half bath property that included a separate pool house and garage exuberantly reimagined as a cool family lounge space by RailiCA Design founder Raili Clasen. The showhouse brought together some of Kennedy’s recurring collaborators and exciting newcomers, as well as talents from near and far including Chicago-based Dan Rak and Max Humphrey from Portland, Oregon. “I think people really love our showhouses because they’re beautiful and they’re inspiring and the best designers in the country participate,” says Kennedy, “but someone is actually going to live there. It gives the house a different texture.”

In the Entry and adjacent Living Room, Chris Reed and Mark Lytle contrasted the angular bones of this midcentury residence and added circular patterns and an open arrangement that leads to a large rear living area outdoors. Textures play with art and wallcoverings to create walls of interest. Tones of gray, white, taupe, gold and black are used in both spaces. The entry is an extension of the living room, shown on the next page.

The color scheme of taupe, gold, and black continues here, illuminated by the natural light pouring in through the glass wall that opens to the outdoor living area. A matte black-finished fireplace provides a graphic focal point in the room.

The Family Room is dark and dramatic, with black walls, a zebra-striped rug, and touches of metallic shine. The space is cozy for daily use, but doubles as an elegant place for a Oscar watch party or a casual wine tasting.

The Office is chic in a palette of saturated green combined with walnut tones. Bustamante was inspired by the colors that surround the crop-lined streets of the Central Valley in the peak of spring. He modernized the space with a black and brass geometric wallpaper, making it unpretentious, cozy, and inviting. Though the room is a remodeled closet, the designer created definition by wrapping the walnut accent stripe outside of the nook, giving it the feel of an entry to another room.

The Hallway draws the eye with a stunning original artwork by Morgan Andre centered between two sconces. The space creates the perfect transition between the public and private rooms of the home.

The Dining Room is entered and viewed from three other spaces and needed to have a visual link to each of them while commanding its own presence. Repeating the cabinetry and wall coverings from the kitchen unites the rooms, while the furnishings and lighting reference the other two adjacent spaces. The space looks like a formal dining room, while actually being “Command Central” for the family, and the bench and fireplace offer a warm mini-destination.

For the Kitchen, Kennedy and his team utilized both the dining room and kitchen spaces to create one central hub for both daily family use and more formal entertainment. The goal was to create a vibe that is both casual and sophisticated. The space is anchored by the two-sided fireplace, which is wrapped in a durable vinyl wallcovering emulating parquet wood. The tones are neutral with accents of deep green (reflecting the trees that line California Avenue) and hints of gold in the lighting.

Daniel’s Room is a dose of modern Americana, with bright accents and old school elements like a steel bed frame and board and batten paneling on the back wall. There is a hanging chair and a basketball hoop for free throwing wadded up homework papers.

In Jacob’s Room the designer created a visually interesting space that is practical and private enough to allow a newly-enrolled college student to feel like an adult. Most of the furniture has dual purpose, and touches of gold and bronze add style.

The Hall Bath, adjacent to Daniel’s room (opposite), is covered in floor to ceiling subway tile and patterned hex flooring, inspired by the designer’s trips to New York City, creating a masculine, moody, and slightly industrial space.

Luke’s Room was created for a high-school-age boy with an interest in design and a big world view. The space is sharp, sophisticated, and energetic. The Poolhouse, with its palette of blues and golds, is inspired by the word apricity: basking in the warmth of the sun. “Bernardsville is a town that is ancestral, gilded age, and modern.”

“My inspiration was my mother, a breast cancer survivor.”

– Nancy Mikulich

– Gail Davis

“After my color tones and wallpaper had been chosen, I learned that the other designers in the house were designing in the same tones. It worked out well, as our home has a nice flow from entrance to exit.” – Tina Ramchandani

“Bernardsville is a cosmopolitan country retreat. I was intent on creating a space that was fresh, current, restful, and contemplative, but that hearkened visually towards traditional roots.”

“My inspiration was the bed. I immediately felt a sense of groundedness when I saw that bed and designed the space around it.”

n the Gothic-style former Parish House of Saint Bernard’s Church on Claremont Road in Bernardsville, 12 nationally- and regionallyknown designers were invited by ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME, to create the interiors of a 100-year-old historic building. Steven Mandel, ASPIRE’S founder and CEO notes, “We are a company that on average produces seven showhouses a year, but The Heritage at Claremont is unique because of the collaboration between our partners, NGC Development and Turpin Real Estate, along with the designers, who have done an incredible job of reimagining this historically important space for modern living.” Mandel continues, “Each designer really brought their A-game to this project, and there is a surprise around every corner.” The property—which contains 20 residences—includes the original historic structure designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh in 1912. Hardenbergh’s work includes The Dakota

and the Plaza Hotel in New York City, and several buildings at both Princeton and Rutgers Universities. Four of the residences are in the original Great Hall, while the remaining 16 are in an adjacent, newly constructed building. Mandel explains, “Every detail pays homage to the importance of the original structure. The stones used for the façade of the new building were mined from the same quarry as the original, so that they would weather and blend perfectly.” The property received national attention both on social media and from design magazines, and Mandel points out that Heritage at Claremont is the caliber of showhouse that is usually reserved for a major city, but the architectural importance of the original building made it a perfect choice for a designer showhouse. Funds raised from the showhouse benefitted the Connie Dwyer Breast Cancer Foundation.

Guest Bedroom and Bath/Residence 201 Kathryn Platt’s inspiration for the guest bedroom suite was the equestrian history and bucolic scenes of this part of New Jersey, including the Somerset Hills of Bernardsville, Far Hills, and Oldwick. The rooms embody her interpretation of the serenity and tradition of these views, reimagined in a contemporary way, using color, pattern, texture, and artwork. PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE VAN TASSEL

The Master Suite/Residence 201 was inspired by the view of the original Saint Bernard’s edifice juxtaposed against the Somerset Hills of Bernardsville. It is an historic sight with the perspective of being nestled in the treetops. The design is a nod to classicism with touches of the Far East. References to flowers are evident in the art, furniture and lighting. The palette is quiet, zen-like and subdued, with accents of pale pink and lilac. The space is balanced with larger-scale furnishings in black, moody finishes.

Living and Dining Room/Residence 202 Designers Courtney McLeod (Right Meets Left Interior Design), Samantha Gore (Samantha Gore Interiors + Design), and Jennifer Levy (CAV Design), formed a design collective called Atelier 20, and together they collaborated on a portfolio of beautiful spaces for the showhouse. The open plan living and dining room (left and above) is the first area that greets visitors upon entering Unit 202 thus deserved a touch of drama. A graphic light fixture and multi-hued wallpaper set the stage for the updated silhouettes and prismatic tones woven throughout the open plan. The living room is designed as a cosmopolitan social space with a sleek linear fireplace and flexible seating options. Equally perfect for a cozy evening by the fire or a party of ten, this room is an ideal backdrop for friends, family, and fun. The designers explain their work together as a great opportunity. “A collaboration between three designers is an unusual arrangement for a showhouse, and we were curious how our differences in style would play out. Happily we found the experience of working as a team to be energizing and a great opportunity to combine our different approaches. We created a natural flow between the spaces, and part of our shared vision was to create a space that felt like a home, not a series of disconnected moments.”

Entry Foyer Through an exploration of dimension, soft colors, textures, form, and materiality, Katalin Farnady added unexpected elements of drama to the entry foyer. She created a concept that is inviting and blends with the design of the showhouse, while still representing her own style. The mural is a nod to her birthplace, Budapest, and the traditional folklore of storks bringing newborn babies. Farnady survived ovarian cancer while pregnant with her first child, and was able to then have two more children. Her entry is a tribute to her personal story. 82

T ASPIRE HOUSE MCLEAN

he Aspire House McLean project began in 2018, when Bill Harrison, renowned architect and principal of Harrison Design, introduced ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME CEO and Founder Steven Mandel to the extraordinary Artisan Builders of McLean. Mandel was immediately impressed, and planning began for a showhouse in this elegant suburb of Washington, D.C. “Artisan understood the commitment, timing and sacrifice needed to pull this off. Their project management team, supervisors, and construction crews never missed a beat, and managed the building process flawlessly.” The principal architects of Harrison Design—Mark Hughes and Bulent Baydar—followed 16th century architect Andrea Palladio's studied use of space and proportion to create a home that is functional and beautiful. Harrison notes, “This is a home designed for a modern-day lifestyle while retaining a sense of classical timelessness.” The residence, which adapts Palladian concepts of geometry, proportion and symmetry, has vast

windows to flood the modern space with sunlight. In order to make sure the interior design matched the caliber of the architecture, Mandel invited Mary Douglas Drysdale to be the design chair. Drysdale worked hand-in-hand with Artisan Builders to bring the project to life. “A talented group of designers and creatives from the Mid-Atlantic region displayed their skills to create a home that is a modern classic mix, referring to the architectural traditions of our region and to the lifestyle that people aspire to today," explains Drysdale. The showhouse was completed during the pandemic, and it opened to the public with, according to Mandel, “strong guidelines to limit the number of people in the home at any one time.” Funds raised from the showhouse supported scholarships for aspiring design talent from underrepresented communities, and an endowment at Marymount University to facilitate those scholarships locally.

The Gallery (right, top and bottom) was designed by interior designer Lenore Winters and art consultant George Hemphill to showcase selected artworks. With that challenge as the primary focus, the design was carefully edited to respect and enhance the experience of each individual work. In a moment of inspiration, they decided to print oversized insects on the drapery panels and install a brilliant blue taxidermy Eurasian Roller Bird that looks like it is flying above the door.

Library For this serene and elegant library, with its great proportions and generous windows, the designer wanted to enhance the minimalism and simplicity of the room. Black-stained wall paneling offset by a light ash floor established a starting point which could be characterized as a black box— an architectural volume that became an asset. Instead of creating the expected library of books, Santa-Cruz envisioned a library for the soul: a collection of art, sculptures, and iconic modern furniture pieces, full of intriguing textures and thought-provoking forms.

“This was our first design collaboration. We individually manage our two separate businesses, so we enjoyed the chance to bring both businesses and staff together to work on this creative project.” – Lenore Winters and George Hemphill

Powder Rooms In two dramatically-lit powder rooms, Sophie Prévost used artwork by Colby Caldwell and photography by Kylie Schaffer, along with furnishings by Noorth and Vitage to create an artistic, jewel-box feel in rooms that tend to be functional rather than spectacular.

The Master Bath is more than a home spa, it elevates everyday rituals by including European-style bath fittings and furniture. A state-of-the-art steam shower promises to renew and relax, and steam generators and control panels put steam quality, density, and hygiene, as well as chromatherapy and aromatherapy, at the touch of an intuitive screen. The freestanding tub is flanked by two exotic sculptures beneath the expansive window. Materials throughout – coupled with a dramatic groin-vaulted ceiling, amplify the sense of serenity. 86

Master Suite Wardrobes The designer created dressing spaces for him and her that are evocative of a high-end boutique, incorporating luxury finishes, custom lighting, and organizational accessories throughout. In her wardrobe (shown here), white cabinetry is paired with bleached walnut accents, with glam provided by metal accessories in brushed brass and polished stainless on shelves, wardrobe rails, and valet rods. For an additional touch, a metal fabricator created a water jet pattern of interlocking “L’s” to adorn the dressing room shelves. Lastly, the design team added softer textures in both wardrobes with the introduction of leather—in his, black leather-clad shelves; in hers, pebbled shagreen.

“Once a bucolic area close to D.C., McLean is now a sophisticated and glamorous setting for large and elegant homes in this well-known and desirable suburb to the District.” – Mary Douglas Drysdale

The Master Bedroom is beautifully proportioned and located on the terrace level to appreciate the thoughtfully designed landscape and gardens that contribute to the sense of estate and luxury of the home. The room was designed with the idea of quiet luxury for an art collecting couple wanting to focus on artistic expression from every view and perspective, while selecting classic modern furnishings. The look is casual luxury without pretension. The toneon-tone, off-white color expression provides a softly textured background for the dramatic works of art found within the suite. “Creating a room in a Designer Showhouse allows for my personal taste, style and creative side to shine, and I take a few more risks than I might for a client’s space.” – Pamela Harvey

The Family Room is a crisp and classic space with soft, upholstered pieces in shades of cream, white and taupe. Natural materials such as marble, stone, walnut, and pottery shine against the pale backdrop. Taking cues from the room’s symmetry of balance and scale, the designer created an artful mix of modern furniture pieces with classic lines. Architectural details, such as the oak ceiling, folding doors, and black marble fireplace, pop against the white walls.

The Kitchen is all about connectivity – a state of being that has grown all the more important during the days of COVID-19. Matte black SieMatic cabinets conceal appliances and pop against the white stone backsplash with striking black veins. The counters, in black stone with white veins, intensify the contrast, while large drawer bases maximize storage and accessibility. Designated work zones, double islands, wider aisles, and a gracious seating area facilitate seamless (and socially distanced) interaction between residents and their guests. An unobtrusive 75-inch LED panel makes it possible to virtually bond with family and friends or pull up a favorite recipe– all from the prep island. No matter what the new normal looks like, the connected kitchen will no doubt serve homeowners well for years to come.

The Dining Room features an impressive two-story barrel ceiling. By designing within large niches in the space, Jennifer Stoner was able to create the intimacy that can be a challenge with rooms of this scale. Her inspiration for the room was a chic supper club somewhere along Spain's Catalan coast, with a room filled with beautiful people enjoying a Sazarac appertif before a dinner punctuated by amazing food and sparkling conversation.

“The magic of a designer showhouse is that I was designing with my own preferences as a guide. My selections were all about my own comfort zone.” – Janie Molster

The Living Room is a sophisticated salon designed as a retreat for the lady of the house. Bathed in flattering rosy pinks with energizing pops of green, the furnishings highlight Janie Molster’s always adventurous design mix. Luxe velvets share space with nubby cottons, and elegant old-world armchairs flank a 70s era acrylic table. Layers of art and texture encourage visitors to linger and be transported.

The Modern Mudroom is designed with family in mind. The space is both practical and playful, featuring a handprinted blowfish paper that ties into the greys found in the connected entry space. Fabrics and accessories provide a pop of color. The custom cabinetry is painted in Cadet Blue by Sherwin-Williams, and the hardware is sleek and elegant. The extra long, built-in bench allows for additional storage and the dedicated dog nook, sponsored by Serena & Lily and Harry Barker, gives the room a cozy and personalized touch for the family pooch. “I like spaces to feel collected and not too matchymatchy, but I also appreciate the details that only a decorator could think of.” – Melissa Colgan

MELISSA COLGAN Melissa Colgan Interiors

Bedroom, Closet + Bath Melissa Colgan created a Virginia bedroom suite inspired by a modern day Bunny Mellon mixed with Billie Eillish or Grimes. A play on classical Southern design tropes with Mellon’s Bon Vivant mix of the humble with the highbrow, her love of chintz, and her impeccable green thumb, the decor incorporates motifs, finishes and textures drawing from her nonchalant elegance. Giacometti-inspired ironwork sits next to bentwood furniture; patinated gilt finishes blend with glossy, bright paint colors; and fabrics in a verdant mix of greens mix with pops of coral and cantaloupe. The room is an homage to Mellon’s studied and worldly, perfectly-imperfect style in a fresh and unexpected way. PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACY ZARIN GOLDBERG.

The Study is a Bohemian escape built for the entire family to enjoy. Bright orange-and-white wallpaper sets the scene for this chic workspace. The built-in desk provides the perfect place for family members of all ages to get some work done. The contemporary chaise by the window is a great place to snuggle up and read.

Hallway & Gallery Inspired by mid-2oth century Italian Modernism, this space represents the metaphorical transition between the floors of the house. Going from public to private space, it is an opportunity to showcase a personal, cherished collection of artworks to be enjoyed in the morning when descending the stairs to start the day and then again in the evening when retiring. A Missoni rug, midcentry-inspired lighting, and modernist furniture complete the picture.

The Guest Room is a study in moody maximalism, a room with a lot of attitude, but is also soft enough to be a relaxing and inviting space. The decor has a modern feel, but layered, looking as though it has evolved over time. A grisaille scenic wallpaper from Alderman Arts is layered in a contemporary neutral pattern at the windows, and fuschia and chartreuse yellow, pulled from an abstract painting, add a pop of color. A mix of antiques and contemporary furniture make for a layered, timeless design. ASPIRESHOWHOUSE.COM

Guest Bedroom Maureen’s Retreat is inspired by the designer's mother, who recently passed away. It is the in-home getaway for a woman who is vibrant and contemplative, deeply thoughtful, and loads of fun. It is the imagined private quarters for the woman we all want to sit by at the next dinner party. Both the bedroom and woman are historically grounded in the past yet clearly contemporary, always mixing just the right amount of cheekiness to surprise you and hold your attention. This room celebrates her and all women of style, substance, heart, and wit. PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIP DAWKINS

“I inherited my love of design from my late mother, who I dedicated this effort to. While she did not live to see the room, she was very much part of the design process.” – Josh Hildreth

The Guest Bath is a little gem—celebrating color, pattern, and line, all creating high drama in a relatively small space. This bathroom is a study in the intensity of green and how it pairs with other items such as the wall-hung vanity, floor tile, the unexpected birds in the window treatment, and the cheetah spots in the water closet. It is whimsical like the Emerald City and raw like the jungle, making this room anything but boring.

The Vestibule is imagined as a good spot to share a secret. An elegant statue in a vulnerable pose was the designer's muse. This inviting nook is accented by a whimsical bunny by Hunt Slonem, a geometric rug, and wallpaper inspired by Indian block printing.

The Wine Bar was conceived as a destination to celebrate wine as a shared social activity. The room feels like a glamorous escape— a place to get dressed up and celebrate in the comfort of one’s home. Designed to stand out as unique, the room is seductively dark and atmospheric, with a dramatically lit wine feature wall. It features luxurious materials—smoky gray stained-wood wallcovering, a stained oak ceiling, and a richly veined black marble counter—creating a space of high contrast and drama. Each wine bottle is held on steel pins so that the bottles appear to float off the (faux) white marble focal wall. The bar is flanked by two tall black and ivory lacquer display cabinets featuring the owner’s collection of glassware. 100

The Guest Bedroom is “uncle chic.” Traditionally feminine elements are paired with masculine furnishings to create a warm and inviting space with a whimsical avian theme. The sweetness of the blush walls and canopy bed are balanced by the quasiindustrial étagère with its tiny brass rivets on metal strapping. The clean-lined desk is strong and understated. And the primary fabric is a sophisticated, abstracted woodland scene, rather than a predictable floral pattern. The Billiards Room is a mix of eclectic and chic pieces centered around a midcentury billiards table. This room was inspired by the artist-applied ombre wall finish that is a gradation from smoke to ivory. The large black-lacquered art by Anke Schofield, the 1720’s Louis XV antique doors disguising the window well, and the unique billiards table illustrate the mix.

The Recreation Room on the terrace level of the home is Cabin Cool, and was designed with a focus on entertaining. The walls are wrapped in shiplap, which inspired Powell to create a design that celebrates gatherings in a remote cabin setting. She created warmth with wood textures and layered the space with familiar-yet-reimagined patterns and motifs. The Covered Porch by Paul Fogg for JANUS et Cie creates a design dialogue between the family room, the pool, and the garden, using colors and textures to connect the interior and exterior spaces. The sophisticated balance of dark hues—frames with deep gray finishes and textiles with cool, captivating tones —creates an intriguing juxtaposition with the light, neutral interiors. As a nod to the verdant green landscape, toss pillows were created in Spinnaker Moss fabric. The Katachi High Back Lounge Chair offers a sophisticated harmony of traditional design and modern sensibility. Paired with the Knot Cocktail Table, the pieces represent a dedication to craftsmanship, each the result of intricate handweaving and expert artistry. The grouping mirrors the spirit of the home: traditional with contemporary touches that highlight the property’s lush surroundings.

The Library is inspired by the wonderful hotel designs of British designer Kit Kemp: a classic library with a twist. The woodwork is painted in glossy Citron Green with the grasscloth in the same tones. Traditional upholstery styles and fabrics are modernized with bold colors, mixed with leather, animal print, and a contemporary geometric pattern. The room is a mixture of antiques, a contemporary sideboard, modern lighting, and whimsical art.

JUNIOR LEAGUE OF DETROIT DESIGNERS’ SHOWHOUSE

The Grand Foyer has been transformed into an oasis reflecting nature’s diversity. Extinct animals, tiger fights, birds singing, flowers blooming and oddities mesh together in perfect harmony with classical architectural detail. On the landing above, a cozy corner to look out the window and dream of other lands.

T

he Junior League of Detroit—veterans of almost five decades of showhouses—hosted its biennial event in September 2020, bringing together 27 design teams to reimagine the city’s historic Bingley Fales House. Migrating for the first time to Detroit’s Indian Village neighborhood, the 2020 Designers’ Showhouse transformed the first two floors of a more than 100-year-old Georgian mansion into a dynamic mix of decorating styles. “The home has a very interesting history, and it has all its original features,” says charity chair Liana Dabir of the 16,000-square-foot estate set on over an acre of meticulously manicured land. Over 4,000 visitors toured the home, helping raise more than $200,000 for the Junior League of Detroit’s projects benefitting women and children. Inside, a living room by Kevin Serba created a memorable moment of contrasts against a fuchsia and citrine space designed by second-time participant

JEANINE HAITH ShowHouse Interiors

Barrie Spang of Sapphire Pear. “It was a really compelling room to be in,” says Dabir of Spang’s Kit Kemp-inspired salon. “I remember asking her, do your clients let you use color like this? She said, ‘my clients come to me because they know I use color this way.’” A modern kitchen by Jean Stoffer abutted a butler’s pantry that featured original stone and cabinetry. “It was a very cool juxtaposition of two spaces,” says Dabir. But it was a verdant two-room sunroom, crafted by Chatham House Interior Design’s Shelley Knudson and Kali Weber, that truly dazzled. “It was a spectacular room in terms of the windows and the lighting,” says Dabir, “and then they made magic in there.” Funds raised from the showhouse benefitted the Junior League of Detroit’s projects in support of women and children. CLAUDETTE WELLONS LASHEE LaShee Floral & Events

The Powder Room’s brightly-colored stained glass window and richly-patterned, vibrant Pewabic tile provided design inspiration for floral designer Claudette Wellons. She created beautiful arrangements in hypnotic shades of yellow with splashes of orange to symbolize the joy embodied in this exuberant space.

“I requested the upper and lower foyer spaces and designed them as one. The opportunities were endless.” – Jeanine Haith

The Upper Foyer is a continuation of the Grand Foyer on the first floor (previous page). Haith designed the spaces to stimulate the imagination and embrace historical tones of yellow, black, and white. A mix of artistic prints and patterns with dramatic and modern flare offers the journey of a lifetime.

The Lady’s Master Retreat is feminine and soothing. It is a room all her own and a place to retreat when a good night’s sleep is a must. The calming, neutral colors are a continuation of the design in the adjacent master bath (next page).

“We used classic marble subway tiles and a timeless mosaic floor with a black accent stripe. This aesthetic also made its way into the Lady’s Retreat next door.” – Laura Zender

The Master Bedroom is a moody, sophisticated mix of old and new. The art displayed is representative of things the designer missed while quarantined: people, restaurants, concerts, museums, fashion, even a trip to Europe. It is designed to be a safe haven, a cozy retreat enveloped in rich, saturated green and surrounded by pattern play. It evokes the ambience of a chic boutique hotel, but the modern elements of the bed and other furnishings are balanced by vintage touches throughout.

In the Owner’s Retreat, the large windows inspired a sitting area off the master suite. In this part of the house, there is a sense of being in the treetops, so the designer used color choices inspired by the Pewabic tile that engulfs the space. Neutrals, greens, and texture inspire relaxation, and pops of acid yellow add a bit of sunshine. Millwork and a beverage center complete the room, (because it’s just too far to go to the kitchen for a glass of wine).

“I was inspired by the treetops outside the windows and the wonderful Pewabic tile on wall and ceiling.” – Debbie Auer

The Chinoiserie Chic Guest Suite was inspired by Schumacher’s Shengyou Toile Fabric. The room is meant to be an inviting and luxurious retreat— much more than just a guest bedroom. It features accommodations for resting, relaxation and intimate dining. The décor is layered with exquisite furnishings and sophisticated luxury, and is intended to evoke thoughts of faraway places and the feeling of a luxury boutique hotel.

In this luxurious and chic Lady’s Dressing Room, antique accents and modern accessories live together in harmony. The walls are embellished with metallic faux finishing and femininity is celebrated with a palette of soft pink.

The Guest Bathroom was inspired by the fact that Detroit was once called the “Paris of the New France.” The designer was inspired by this history and chose to honor it through the oversized mural of Claude Monet’s “Sunset on the Seine at Lavacourt,” supplied by Detroit Wallpaper Company. Blending Parisian influence with the existing architecture of the home resulted in a space replete with intricate trimwork, arches, color, and of course, the signature white marble. This Lady’s Bedroom is a sanctuary for the curious woman who has traveled the world in search of inspiration and documented it all through her paintings, curiosities, and books. It’s a hideaway full of details and embellishments, a refined and gracefully timeless space that is ever-evolving and inviting. The spirit of the space is to remind the viewer to find beauty and cultivate curiosity.

“I was given an absolutely beautiful room to design. The dental and picture frame moldings, tall ceilings and beautiful bay window area allowed me to hit the ground running with a stellar design.” – Annie Kordas

ALEXIS ELLEY Textures Interior Design

This Bathroom’s aesthetic is casually elegant with natural textures and tones. Mindful of the homeowner’s traditional style, the designer kept the space serene and welcoming, while maintaining the historical feel of the home. The space had been redone by the previous homeowners with oddly placed drywall. Demolition revealed a unique mother of pearl call button, which was left in place for a touch of whimsy.

This Children’s Bedroom combines a mixture of vintage and new pieces and is a true meeting of earth and animals, night and day. The Forêt Noire wallpaper lines the ceiling, giving off an energy of the night sky. A moon-like chandelier hangs overhead, and vintage children’s books in primary tones float on the wall in an unconventional bookcase. Stripe and dot drapery panels offer a touch of playfulness, and a silk abstract rug parallels the movement of a rich, dense forest.

To celebrate the classical architecture of the home, a bedroom was converted into a Reading Room. The designer enhanced the exquisite woodwork by painting it a deep and rich glossy blue-green. The furniture is timeless and is enhanced by wool tartans, and linens in mustard and eggplant shades.

An ordinary bedroom becomes a Lounge, fit for the world traveler who loves to be surrounded by lavish textures and global inspiration. The designer created a space that is primarily used to escape from the mundane and recharge. Rather than adding a traditional bed, she chose a statement daybed covered in sumptuous leather, and positioned it in front of floor-to-ceiling draperies and custom art.

“My inspiration for The Gentlemen’s Lounge was my grandfather, Mr. Bobby Lee Hilton. He taught me the value in self-care, and was the epitome of sophistication, intelligence, and a wellgroomed gentleman.” – Andre Jordan Hilton

The Gentleman’s Grooming Lounge is the ultimate retreat for grooming and dressing, where the man of the house transforms into the best representation of himself. The space is layered, like the very best bespoke three-piece suit. The rich palette is regal, stimulating intellect and reflecting personal style. Curved silhouettes, clean lines, luxurious fabrics, unique accessories, and fragrance add to the ambiance. This room is an ode to tradition while showcasing the style of the modern day classic man.

The Kitchen accommodates the gathering of friends and family, and functions at a high level for food storage, preparation and cooking. The space is light and bright with beautiful and layered finishes, incorporating the warmth of rough sawn floor planks and a hickory stained dish dresser with the glamour of the high gloss painted island and mixed metals in the light fixtures. The room is topped off with a beadboard ceiling, a nod to the room’s origin as a utilitarian space for the home’s servants. The integrated refrigeration units are disguised to look like an old icebox, referencing the original icebox found in the adjacent Butler’s Pantry. The Dining Room is inspired by Hollywood Regency, with every detail meant to convey luxury. The chairs have exposed fretwork backs for a modern take on classic Chippendale sensibility, and are covered in rich emerald velvet. The grand dining table has a simple architectural pedestal accentuated by a decorative metal band. This design sees the traditional oak dining table and raises it to new style heights. A blend of materials and lavish textures create a space that is perfect for entertaining large dinner parties.

The center courtyard gardens feature a three-tiered fountain surrounded by an array of California native perennials, inviting wildlife like the Anna’s hummingbird and Checkerspot butterfly. This design holds its own in beauty, sustainability, and low water— making it a California native twist on a conventional cottage garden. 142

PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE OF DESIGN

estled in the park-like grounds of the Santa Anita Oaks neighborhood of Arcadia, California is an historic 1937 Federal-style home—Locke House—designed by architect, Gerard Rae Colcord, known as “Hollywood society’s architect.” The home is modeled after an East Coast country estate. In 2020, Locke House was chosen to be the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Now in its 56th year, the venerable showcase is one of the longest-running house and garden tours in the country. The 6,700 square-foot home was reinterpreted by 17 interior designers and four exterior designers and was an opportunity to completely reimagine what the home could be, more than 80 years after it was built. Vicky Sung, the 2019-2020 President of the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts notes, “We were drawn to the house because it was of such architectural significance, and it lives on a stunning two-acre expanse of property with a beautiful rolling lawn. But for all its grandness, the house itself is smaller by typical showcase standards—a little more accessible.” While respecting the history of the home, the designers presented novel interior and exterior design concepts—in the vein of the home’s original architect, who brought an entirely new style to the area. The house is packed with inventive, artistic design elements—a breakfast room adorned with three-dimensional embroidered butterflies, cloud-covered walls, a Tiffanyblue wrapped bedroom, a calming koi pond and stream. Since the tour’s inception, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design has opened its doors to guests eager to see new ideas from talented designers. While this house was not able to open its doors last year due to the pandemic, virtual tour tickets can be purchased online. The proceeds of this tour continue to bring music programs and music education to Southern California— tying the worlds of art, music, design and philanthropy into one meaningful gesture. Funds raised from the showhouse benefitted music and arts programs in Southern California.

In the Entry Foyer, the antique circular table pays homage to the home’s Federal style. The custom console table with its curvilinear back was based on the open string on the staircase designed by the original architect. Everything in this space has a story full of passion and purpose. 144

VOLUME 1

“My inspiration in the entry was natural class and love. When people walked in, I wanted them to feel the loving energy and see a highly luxurious space with natural class.” – Christine Jahan

In the Breakfast Room, the designers were inspired by a visit to Murano during a design trip to Venice. They masked the view to the side yard with a custom Murano glass curtain that allows light into the room, and obscures the outdoors, keeping the viewer’s eye focused and contained within the room. Just like the city that inspired it, the room is a jewel box with something interesting to look at in every corner.

AMMIE KIM Ammie Kim Interior Design

Ammie Kim’s Dining Room was inspired by a trip to Barbizon, France. This French traditional dining room features a hand-painted scenic mural depicting a tranquil European landscape, as well as various hints of Asian culture. Objects wrapped in organza fabric, a Korean tradition known as Bojagi, are displayed atop the dinnerware. A French colonial, Indo-Chinese dining table adds a unique quality to the room. The pantry is complete with a lighted glass cabinet, wide linen drawers, a wine reserve, full dishwasher, open shelving, and storage and prep counter space. The adjacent kitchen, designed for the modern minimalist foodie, is designed with eco-friendly natural materials, harmonious textures, and layers of soothing neutral colors. Courtney Thomas’s Mighty Mudroom and Pet Spa, designed for busy families juggling kids, gear, and pets, is the true entrance of the house. The room’s location, off the garage and next to the kitchen is ideal for a combination mudroom, laundry, and pet bath. A wide double door entry gives easier access to this high-functioning destination with French Provincial character. The re-imagined space features two-tone cabinetry; quartz counters; an apron front, concrete sink; a mudroom bench; a full-sized washer and dryer; steam closet and pet bath station.

COURTNEY THOMAS Courtney Thomas Design

The Garage is transformed into a functional space for the family. A flat screen TV and motorized overhead rack with Bluetooth technology makes it the ultimate man cave. Cabinetry with a countertop for entertaining, a bench with convenient shoe storage, a multi-purpose workbench, and a separate mobile work station on rollers round out the accoutrements. The designers’ exclusive shelving rack system keeps storage off the floor and accommodates the highest weight capacity on the market. The commercial grade, and low VOC, Polyurea flooring system is impervious to oils and solvents and will last a lifetime. KRISTER LILE & JAY GRIFFITH Organized Garage Solutions

The Live Work Studio—created with the dual inspirations of a visit to the 2019 Salone del Mobile in Milan and imagining how the designer’s adult daughter would use the space if she needed to live at home—is a fresh and functional space, ideal for lounging, working, and entertaining. The aquatic theme is completed by blue-green, sand, and silver tones, with a bespoke mural wallpaper overhead. The contemporary built-in wall bed and nightstands are lit from above by a custom, articulating light fixture. The bed disappears into the wall, and a sleek wallmounted interactive workout mirror transforms the room into a home gym. The lounge area includes an artist’s corner, complete with an easel and (on the opposite side of the room), a bar with recycled glass terrazzo countertops and seafoam green cabinetry is inspired by a European train station.

For the Millennial Suite, Gregory created a space with rich hues and textural elements, combining a love of Art Deco, modern style, and the most current technology, while also being environmentally conscious. Younger generations and baby boomers alike will appreciate the motorized window shades and lighting that can be controlled by a smartphone or voice-activation. An adjacent bathroom combines high style with accessibility.

In the Upstairs Laundry, a vintage and Boho style palette of coral, salmon, and shades of green is blended into fabrics, trims, and wallpaper with exotic, earth prints. Bespoke cabinetry with stowed storage, adorned with industrial hardware, keeps the design timeless. A hidden bookcase reveals a substantial linen closet, and a fireclay apron front sink is paired with a satin brass faucet. Compact washer and dryer with built-in Wi-Fi and modular track keep the homeowners powered and connected, while a herringbone pattern on the floor frames the redefined space.

DONNA WHELEN & CAITLIN WHELAN Whelen Design House

This Young Explorer’s Room was designed for a 13-year-old boy who might be a character in Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom.” He’s a curious boy who loves science, plants, and animals. The atmospheric cloud wallpaper, quirky plants, Boy Scout memorabilia, a small collection of vintage items, and papier-mâché taxidermy add whimsy. The room is designed for a creative thinker, who surrounds himself with nature in a haven for creativity, reflection, and discovery — a reminder of the fresh air and the creatures outside, an ideal place in which to grow up.

The Jack & Jill Bathroom was inspired by the unique pattern of the existing molding in the room. The designers played with contoured shapes, which in turn gave them the idea to create a geometric pattern on the floor. The nook houses a freestanding bathtub and elegant chandelier that add to the relaxation and sparkle. The eye-catching bold blue velvet drapery and abundance of natural light draws the eye upward to the texture of the 3D tile on the ceiling.

A Sophisticated Girl’s Room is dressed in luxurious velvet, silk, and classic linen in deep teal, mint green, and a splash of bold yellow, inspired by current color trends on fashion runways. The space is youthful but timeless, with references to Art Deco, such as the arched headboard, and fun Bohemian elements like the bullion fringe. The look is completed with whimsical art and modern furniture, but mixed with antique pieces to complement the architecture of the home. The adjoining closet is painted in a rich teal with bronze accents and statement light fixtures. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIKA BIERMAN

JHOIEY RAMIREZ Studio Jhoiey, Inc.

The Primary Suite embraces the glory days of the 1930s when the beautification of Arcadia meant planting trees along parkways, golf courses, and bowling greens, inspiring the different hues of green and the botanical patterns seen in this room. The architect’s Federal-style details were maintained throughout the rooms that comprise this suite: the master bedroom, the master bath, and a dressing room and closet. The resulting suite is a combination of male and female energy, blending classic style with modern convenience and technology. 152

VOLUME 1

PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE OF DESIGN

The Family Room was inspired by the home’s Colonial façade, but with a modern classic take. The space exudes warmth and comfort, but is sharpened with modern details. Rectangular shapes and custom gold trim against rich, navy blue, emphasize the Colonial style. The ceiling continues this style with rectangular motifs filled with gold marbled wallpaper. To infuse grandeur and sophistication in the room, the designer introduced reflective materials, such as metallic wallpaper, high-sheen drapery, and accessories with surfaces that shine.

This Home Office is designed for both efficiency and comfort. Brightly lit with bold contrasts, the suite also features an updated bathroom, shared with the family room, and boldly painted built-ins. The room is accessorized with objects that are a combination of new and a nod to the past.

A koi pond and stream that extends underground to store rainwater make the Sun and Waterscape Terrace both sustainable and beautiful. The feature uses fifty percent less water than a traditional lawn. The newly paved patio and walkway are surrounded by a colorful array of drought-tolerant succulents, ornamental grasses, and arid tropical plants, carefully selected to offer a lush landscape requiring minimal maintenance and water.

“The Pasadena Showcase has raised millions of dollars for premier music groups in the metro Los Angeles area and funds music programs in local schools. We wanted to show that a traditional room could be utilized differently.” – Greg Parker and Paul Heintz III

The Bella Notte Loggia is a romantic niche that offers an escape to a Roman villa, with painted ceiling panels of twilight sky, embellished with swans in jeweled finery and cherubs amid fantastical gardens. Sheer draperies on the arched colonnade float in the breeze, accented by statuary and potted citrus and cypress. The ASID’s Poolhouse Lounge offers an exotic backyard escape to entertain family and friends in sophisticated comfort. The lounge is designed for a perfect auditory experience, and it boasts indoor/outdoor woven vinyl carpet and sleek countertops that can withstand the heat of the indoor barbeque. Moroccan patterns in the tile are from a trip to Spain, and the black lacquered cabinet was purchased in China. A North Africaninspired pattern is stenciled around the television as a reminder of an architectural tour taken there, and curated global accessories fill the room with sentimental reminders of places the family has shared.

Cottage Rhapsody is an enchanting, grown-up fairytale, inspired by the romance and whimsy of following one’s heart and passions. Walls are adorned inside and out with fanciful native flora and fauna. The furnishings reflect the eccentric spirit of an artist and collector, expressing an appreciation of beauty and plenty of panache. Potted gardens of topiary and flowers combine the whimsical and wild, and provide a diverse food supply for birds and butterflies.

The Pool was designed as a warm and inviting space for guests to enjoy in any season. A luxury spa makes the area more inviting and relaxing. The natural red brick showcased in the spa and water feature ties everything together. The pool deck is constructed from tumbled paving stones, which combine elegance with outstanding durability. By terracing the landscape, the pool connects seamlessly with the house, creating one cohesive space. Ceramic succulent bowls with drought-tolerant plants bring life and energy to the outdoor space.

“My design aesthetic leans a little more traditional/transitional. Designing this contemporary room was a wonderful opportunity to flex my creative muscles.”

“The biggest challenge was to make the room spacious, joyful, bright and cozy, adding the right color palette, thoughtful lighting, and key elements to make the room sumptuous but understated.”

A League of Its Own TEXT BY DEBORAH L. MARTIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE VAN TASSELL

The Entry is part Bohemian parlor and part refined art gallery. It is a curated collection of textured wallcoverings from Arte and unique furnishings, set against a backdrop of dry cerused wood panels and blackened steel. Chevron wallcovering adds a graphic punch all the way up to the second floor. A round banquette centers the expansive space. 166

In the Library designer Amy Manor used her childhood experiences and recent events surrounding racial justice to create a room that symbolizes and embraces diversity in all its forms. Manor explains, “My vision has remained the same but has taken on an unexpected direction of interpretation and individual discovery. Our mission is to never to forget the human sacrifices that will continue to make this world a better place.” She used a dark, mesmerizing, and thought provoking palette to create a judgment-free space to discover and reflect on truth and beauty.

n its storied history, the Ivy League town of Princeton, New Jersey has long been known for the best in education, the arts, and culture. It has also—since 1974—been known as a showhouse town. But in recent years that aspect of Princeton culture had ceased, until last year when ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME launched ASPIRE HOUSE Princeton, in a contemporary home only a few minutes from the Gothic towers of Princeton University and its surrounding landmark mansions. A portion of the proceeds from the showhouse were set aside to benefit the education and careers of up-and-coming designers from underrepresented communities. Despite the challenges of producing a project of this nature—and then opening it to the public—during a global pandemic, the home was widely acclaimed for its diversity of design and innovation. Sophia Koutsiaftis, Associate Publisher of ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME explains,” It was a great pleasure collaborating with the enormously talented team of designers, showhouse sponsors, product sponsors, craftspeople, vendors and volunteers that all contributed to bringing this incredible home to life.” Funds raised from the showhouse supported scholarships for aspiring design talent from underrepresented communities.

His Office In a world where everyone is re-thinking their office spaces, the designers created a room to excite the senses and give the occupant a sense of joy, movement, and discovery without having to venture too far. Although it’s a workspace, the room has a world-traveler vibe—exotic ikat and Greek key patterns interact with the area rug and drapery to inject energy into an otherwise orderly and luxurious space. A golden glow emanates from the custom built-in cabinetry and shelving by Florense. VIVIAN HUNG & JOE GIAMARESE Global Home Interior Design

In Her Office the designers envisioned a room that translates to an escape in mind, body and spirit, where creativity can flourish, the mind can rest with nature, and form and focus can organically coexist.

“The clients had a clear vision of what they wanted — they were looking for California Modern with elements of Asian style. We worked with them on selecting materials that had a natural feel.” – Ginny Padula

Kitchen, Breakfast Lounge, and Butler’s Pantry To set the tone for the rest of the home, the homeowner asked Ginny Padula to create a warm, inviting space that serves as a family gathering spot with a cool California vibe and touches of zen. Padula elected materials that were sleek yet earthy and natural to create this aesthetic. They chose a flat door style with hidden hardware for the custom cabinetry, sourced through the designer’s firm, allowing the dramatic graining of the naturally finished walnut to shine, and become the focus of the kitchen. The Silestone countertops in a subtle white marble lighten up the space, and the same material is also used for the waterfall edge and up the backsplash, drawing the eye from the floor up through the space. Rich jewel tones and mixed metals layered over this earthy base fill the space— making it feel modern, comfortable, and warm. The cozy breakfast lounge makes this working kitchen the perfect place to entertain or gather with family and friends.

Mudroom Transition The mudroom is designed to have the grandeur of a foyer, but with a personalized and intimate feel. Motifs and materials, like the scenic wallcovering and buckwheat filled cushions (traditionally used in Japanese meditation pillows), pay homage to the heritage of the homeowners. A cheerful atmosphere provides a place to release the tension of the day while custom built-ins and closets offer space to remove more physical baggage. The enclosed powder room invites guests to a ceremonial hand washing experience before entering the home’s main quarters. The space functions as a transition from the outer to the inner world with a design that is rooted in traditions of the past, responsive to the needs of the present, and reflective of the mindful living practices of the future.

Dining Room Designed as a private paradise, designer Sam Ciardi’s dining room is a study in blending styles and global influences. Antique wooden panels set a dramatic backdrop, while Italian dining chairs paired with a custom oval dining table by Tightrope NYC create the ultimate expression of luxurious minimalism. A dark, earthy ceiling allows for dozens of illuminated vessels to appear suspended in midair, in the chandelier by Currey & Company. Deep green lacquer covers a bespoke credenza, and a painting by Sebastian Vallejo hangs over the bold palm frond textured walls.

Drawing Room A celebration of the atypical and unexpected, the Drawing Room embodies sumptuous serenity, in which the designer created a multifaceted space that is inviting, alive with history, culture, and modernity. The resulting space is a sophisticated medley of styles ranging from American Art Deco to European midcentury, and modern emerging artists. “Rooms are photo albums that evoke memories,” explains the designer. “They are colors, textures, scents, and sounds that hold pieces of your past and create the promise of your future. How you decorate them should remind you of experiences that have brought you – and will continue to bring you – happiness and well-being.”

JUDY KING Judy King Interiors

Master Bedroom Designer Judy King created a master bedroom suite where the soft lines of the mural wall blend beautifully with the natural vein of the fireplace stone, drawing the eye across the room. By incorporating simple, yet distinguished furnishings, the space is tied together with comfort and sophistication in mind. The beginning and ending of the day is spent in the master bathroom and walk-in closet, where opulence and practicality were in mind while designing.

Master Bath designed By Ginny Padula and styled by Judy King, incorporates Town & Country’s cabinetry with the same clean, minimalist aesthetic found throughout the home, giving the room the relaxing feel of a Japanese spa, with tub and fixtures by Kohler. Boy’s Room Diane Durocher’s Young Explorer bedroom is inspired by the idea that adventure, curiosity and exploration are what opens young minds to infinite possibilities. For the design of Julian’s bedroom, she imagined a nine year old boy’s curiosity about the world, travel, and life. The palette and furniture were selected so that the decor can grow with him, and create a timeless space for homework, reading, and dreaming big dreams. Built-in shelving by Florense provides ample space for displaying treasures and books.

The Bath, designed by Ginny Padula and styled by Diane Durocher, carries on the color scheme of the boy’s room with a backsplash wall of deep navy tiles from Garden State Tile, wood grain cabinets from Town & Country Kitchen and Bath, and fixtures by Kohler. The Guest Bedroom was designed by Gail Davis as a cozy retreat for when family members visit. The dark and enveloping environment makes guests feel as if they are on a fivestar vacation once the door closes, shutting out all outside distractions. Davis conceived the dark walls to act in contrast to the light floors and the Juliet balcony that overlooks the front of the home. The bed is upholstered in plum-colored velvet, adding a vibrant pop of color and sensual texture. This bedroom is the perfect guest retreat.

DONALD CHRISTIANSEN Chelsea Art Group

The Pop Art Gallery Don Christiansen, president of Chelsea Art Group—experts at dealing with museum collected artists— was very excited to be invited to participate in the Aspire House Princeton project. The Gallery space was populated with leading artists in the genre. “We wanted something exceptional to fill the large space,” he says. top left: “We were very lucky to have available the Roy Lichtenstein.” top, right: “The large yellow works were done by Pat Steir,” explains Christiansen. “She is best known for her abstract dripped, splashed and poured Waterfall paintings.” bottom, left: “Also in the room was a large work on paper by Elizabeth Murray,” he adds. “Her cartoonish paintings, prints and drawings bridge the gap between surrealism, conceptualism and pop art.” bottom right: Canadian artist David Craven “includes text in his paintings, which were inspired by conversations he heard as people walked by the studio,” says Christiansen. “We decided to have a little fun and make a David Craven room which featured several of these works on one wall so that they, too, may be in conversation.”

The Wet Bar is an entertaining space that is both cool and modern, yet comfortable and soothing. The bar is made from sleek, dark, high-gloss stained oak cabinets from Town & Country Kitchen and Bath, paired with an ultra-durable matte countertop by Dekton to anchor the space, making it the eye-catching center of the room. Softer earth tones in the fabrics and decorative elements create a calming juxtaposition. Taking inspiration from the homeowner’s heritage, Padula brought in layers of natural materials and vintage pieces with Asian influences to deepen the feel of a place to enjoy the company of family and friends.

Jeanne Silverthorne emerged into an art world dominated by men and minimalism. Her preferred medium: hand-crafted rubber. “Rubber has many connotations for her: material that is not always used in art, something common, durable, flexible—all qualities Silverthorne thinks are important in life,” explains Christiansen. Chelsea Art Group chose to include her piece “Exit Sign with Fan,” made of phosphorescent neoprene that charged daily and glowed at night, to “show how the use of unusual, unexpected art objects can liven a room.” The piece was also featured in Silverthorne’s exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
