MUSIC | FUNDAMENTAL Music is a constant companion in times of change, and in 2019, we have more opportunities than ever before to share it freely. Creating intimate live performance experiences is at the heart of the Australian String Quartet (ASQ). In our 35th year, we are privileged to share these with a close community of music-lovers across the country through our National Season and ASQ Festivals. As we explore new ways of working, our ASQ+ Subscription recognises our vital community and invites you to help shape the ASQ of the future. We’re listening. Angelina Zucco Chief Executive Australian String Quartet

AUSTRALIAN STRING QUARTET From our home base at the University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, we reach out across Australia and the world to engage people with an outstanding program of performances, workshops, commissions and education programs. Dedicated to musical excellence with a distinctly Australian flavour, we create unforgettable experiences for audiences worldwide. We are privileged to perform on a matched set of Guadagnini instruments. Hand crafted by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini between c.1743–1784 in Turin and Piacenza, Italy, these exquisite instruments were brought together through the vision of Ulrike Klein AO. The instruments are on loan to the ASQ for their exclusive use through the generosity of UKARIA.

MORE FREQUENCIES | MORE FREQUENTLY Welcome to our 2019 national program. This year we venture across our beautiful country several times through our National Season tours, ASQ Festivals, Close Quarters concerts, collaborations and education programs. The centrepiece, our National Season, celebrates the much-loved quartets of Debussy, Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn and Sibelius, explores the minds of left-of-centre thinkers Charles Ives and Helena Winkelman, and premieres new works by Australian composers Kate Moore and Nigel Westlake.

As an ASQ+ Subscriber, we welcome you into our new community, allowing you special access across our entire national program of music. You can read more about this from page 15. Thank you for supporting us in our mission to share music across Australia. Dale, Francesca, Stephen & Sharon

Whimsical spirit encounters aesthetic introspection in the first of our 2019 National Season concerts. Haydn’s admiration for the musicality of birds creates curious charm, contrasting the soulful reflections of Finland’s great Romantic artist, Jean Sibelius. Inspired by the new spirit of elegance and clarity defined with the term ‘galant,’ Haydn’s work is directed entirely towards the listener’s delight, allowing musical intuition to transcend the composer’s technique.

In contrast, Sibelius delves deep into his emotional life, surveying his feelings and fears in a tremendous assertion of personal strength. This quartet draws its force from a profound understanding of the intimacies of feeling, which only a string quartet can truly explore. The ASQ performs with guest cellist Timo-Veikko Valve while Sharon Grigoryan is on parental leave

“ THIS ENSEMBLE IS PLAYING BETTER THAN EVER” The Age

A young man brimming with confidence and sure of a bright future: this is Beethoven at the time of creating his first string quartets. His opus 18 no 4 is quicksilver in its variety of moods and characters, thoroughly conveying both technical mastery and compelling artistic personality. Seventy years later, Brahms displayed a devotion to chamber music that went against the spirit of his times. But like an artist who works in mezzotint rather

than forging grand canvasses, Brahms produced some of the most sublime and intimate creations that the world had ever heard. His first string quartet is the glorious flowering of his cultivated technique and searching artistry. These masterworks are complemented by a new piece by young Australian composer Kate Moore, also inspired by a fascination with the natural world.

The music of Charles Ives is made of pictures from a long-lost America, depicted with such vivid immediacy that they seem absolutely alive. Through the magic lantern of his musical imagery, this New England world appears like a nostalgic dream – white-painted churches in autumn forests filled with congregations joyously chanting hymns and spirituals. Not dissimilar to the exploration that Ives undertakes, Claude Debussy’s quest to

EDUCATION & WORKSHOPS NURTURING FUTURE GENERATIONS OF MUSICIANS & MUSIC LOVERS Spending intensive days with students and ensembles across the country, the ASQ’s masterclass and workshop programs culminate in inspiring public performances showcasing local talent and providing enriching experiences for students and their families. 2019 sees Dale, Francesca, Stephen and Sharon dedicate their time and expertise in multi-day programs at schools and universities in cities and regional centres, focusing not just on instrumental technique but ensemble playing, communicating, listening and performing.

As Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Adelaide, a centrepiece of 2019 is the Quartet’s popular ASQ Day at Elder, an intensive holiday workshop for secondary school-aged musicians, finishing with a combined performance at the University’s Elder Hall, a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. QUARTET & COUNTRY A vision, shared across the missions of three Australian institutions, spawned a project whose determination could ripple through generations. The Port Fairy Spring Music Festival and its Artistic Director, composer Iain Grandage, UKARIA and the ASQ, joined forces with a bold plan to couple Western Art Music with the traditional Songlines of Australia. The resulting three-year project Quartet & Country materialised in the form of a series of brand new commissions for string quartet and voice. Interweaving connection to country, family, history and modernity, artists William Barton, Lou Bennett, Deborah Cheetham AO,

Djakapurra Munyarryun, Stephen Pigram and Ursula Yovich created works in residency at UKARIA, facilitated by Grandage. The pieces were premiered by the ASQ at the annual Port Fairy Spring Music Festival and are in the process of being recorded for posterity. The creation phase of this project now complete; the six works live on in perpetuity. Already, Barton’s work Square Circles Beneath the Red Desert Sand is slated for a new virtual reality project in collaboration with the ASQ, Jumpgate VR and Closer Productions, and repeat performances are scheduled across the country with dates to be announced.
