Fashion System

In the recent decades discourse of fashion is highly requested issue in the context of high culture. Prompted by various strategies, questions and discussions fashion museums, galleries and private collections establishes all over the world. However, serious study of fashion, especially in the central and Eastern Europe, is quite poor. Fashion here is often seen as mere phenomenon of mass and popular culture, whose denominator accumulates only structures of business and economic. For this reason, and the need to change current situation fashion curator Asta LabĹžentytÄ— aspires to develop a methodology of contemporary fashion analysis (including artistic, social, ethical and cultural aspects of the industry) and apply it to the research of the situation in the Baltic states. The results of the research will be used in exhibition development, mentoring, and dissemination.


Operational Plan: Prepare a system of contemporary fashion analysis based on a philosophers R. Barthes analytical methods. Adapt the developed methodology in research of fashion industry in the Baltic countries. Create a concept of an exhibition. Facilitate the implementation of the conceptin in collaboration with the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian fashion designers and

institutions. Prepare a list of works and participants presented. Ensure dissemination of the developed concepts and methodologies ( lectures, seminars, conferences, discussions.) Prepare a draft implementation of the exhibition in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Germany and Denmark. Put effort to integrate the exhibition in selected fashion weeks ( Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn, Berlin and Copenhagen) Ensure contribution of sponsors and partners to the implementation and funding Develop and publish a series of articles exploring the fashion system in the Baltic countries. Prepare and publish a series of interviews with the parties involved in the project.

Fashion production (resource, textile industry, innovations, technology, company analysis)

Fashion distribution (fashion illustration, fashion photography, fashion video, fashion films, advertising, visual merchandising, fashion events)

Fashion consumption (social issues, trends, identity, globalisation, pollution) French culture critic and literary theories R. Barthes in 1967 published "Fashion System", a book which initiated structural fashion studies. Book’s opening section titled ‘Introduction: Method’ is a comprehensive and lucid demonstration of his methodological approach to the question ‘What is fashion?’ This "method" (analysis of production, distribution and consumption) will be the base to our research project in the Baltic states.


Expected results: Improved UNDERSTANDING of the Baltic fashion industry and design. Prepared METHOD for fashion research, analysis and dissemination. Developed critical and analytical TOOLS for industry consumers and employees.
