PROJECT OVERVIEW During the period of 1940 to 1990, Los Angeles rapidly evolved into one of the most populous and influential industrial, economic, and creative capitals in the world. Architectural innovations of this era transformed LA’s complex landscape into a vibrant laboratory for cutting edge design. Overdrive: LA Constructs the Future, 1940 – 1990 will, for the first time, offer an in-depth analysis of these built experiments and their impact on modern design. Through a dynamic gallery experience, architectural drawings, photographs, models, films, digital displays, and other materials will reveal the complex and often under appreciated facets of this metropolis, and illustrate how LA became an internationally recognized destination with its own design vocabulary, canonized landmarks, and coveted lifestyle.

POINT OF VIEW

VIEWING THE PROGRESSION OF THE LOS ANGELES METROPOLIS FROM 1940s THROUGH 1990s, WE SEE THAT EVERY STRUCTURE, NEIGHBORHOOD, AND WORK OF ART CREATES AN INTRICATE NETWORK THAT IS AS UNIQUE AS THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE INDIVIDUAL.

“ONE IS FORCED TO BE THE OBJECT OF FASCINATION AND FRAY, WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY JUDGING AND MONITORING THE URBAN EXPERIMENT. THE RARE EMOTION OF BEING WATCHED WHILE ALSO WATCHING CAJOLES ONE TO CONTINUE TO REFINE AND REEVALUATE HIS OR HER PERCEPTION OF THE CITY.”

- Michael Maltzan, Los Angeles architect

“THE CITY PRESENTED ITSELF TO ME AS A SERIES OF COLLIDING EVENTS AND INTERACTIONS. MULTIPLE CULTURES AND LANDSCAPES EMERGED THROUGH THE LIGHT OF THE OVEREXPOSED HORIZON IN FLASHES OF CONTRADICTION: FERTILE AND ARID, DARK AND BLINDING, RESTRICTIVE AND GENEROUS — SPACES RIPE WITH INCONSISTENCY”

- Michael Maltzan, Los Angeles architect

Thank you Stanley Chen, Debbie Chang, and Catherine Menard for giving it our best through the end. I am so grateful to have had the chance to work with such talented designers. We are a dreamteam. Rob Ball and Dewi Schoenbeck my instructors who have given their time and energy in guiding me through this project. The Getty museum’s designers, curators, directors for giving us the chance to work with the Getty’s upcoming exhibition. Always, my family for your unconditional love, prayer, and guidance. My friends, Joanna, Dennis, and Timmy staying with me throught the sleepless night, keeping me awake with late night deep conversations as we built our models. Ahrhembyeol Stella Lee
