Nina Evangelista, a freelance fashion designer, won the grand prize with her design “The Romantic” by using indigenous materials like piña and abaca. Category winners include Jose Francisco for Classic Casual, Anna Clarissa Bacani for Casual Trendy, Carla Varias for Classic Children’s, Nina Evangelista for Filipiniana and Arturo Enrico Navarro for Avant Garde and Pop. Patis Tesoro, Amina Aranza-Alunan, Puey Quinones, Lilia Abella for Cong. Marcelin Teodoro comprised the panel of judges. The grand prize winner was sent to represent the Philippines in the 2009 International Footwear Design Competition in China. ♀♂

When it rains, I just stay indoors with the kids all day. But whenever we see pockets of sunshine we go out and get some sun especially with the newborn Stella, she needs sun for vitamin D.

PANGASINAN Situated on an estuary, Punta Riviera Resort’s elevated sea frontage offers a romantic view of where the Malino river meets the sea. It is unique in that sense because not a lot of sea-front resorts have that. Most of our time here was spent lounging in their infinity pool But we did take several trips to the gorgeous Patar beach, Cape Bolinao lighthouse and the Enchanted Cave with an undergound pool—all of which may be arranged with the resort’s owners, if you are nice! LAIYA When a destination is harder to get to, just be patient. Soon the beauty of this yet little-known resort will reveal itself at the end of a rough road. There are numerous resorts lined-up all along the Laiya zone, but Sabangan Beach Resort offers the best value for your money for the sheer number of activities it provides its guests, and the free wi-fi. Whether you’re on a quick get-away, or in a group that is heavily into barbecued treats and fiercely competitive billiard or volleyball games, your preferrences will all be properly engaged. After gorging on meals we brought (which, during the time we were there, they actually allowed), we could not resist the white beach and so we gave in and dove into the crystal blue waters. CURRIMAO Ilocos Norte’s best-kept-secret no more, Playa Tropical Resort Hotel looks absolutely gorgeous. Its Bali-inspired design just adds to the romance of not just being away from the city but of seemingly being in another part of the world altogether. That it seems isolated only adds to its appeal. They have dining areas “floating” on the pond, and they have a giant pool (all of 460 square meters) by the beach. The beach can be accessed from a private gate at the resort.
