PAT CLEVELAND The famous black model of the 1970s, Pat Cleveland, became one of the pioneers to break through fashion’s exclusionary system. She was epitomized by her outgoing personality as well as her love of dance, poetry and all things art.

BARE BONES Bare Bones is a collection that borders on elegance and minimalism, drawing from the impact simple silhouettes and texture can have. Inspiration for this came from the various contours and ridges of the human skeleton.

CONSUMER PROFILE The Bare Bones woman aims to quietly stand out and is always concerned with wearing her values. She not only has a minimal aesthetic but this is her overall approach to life, consistently defying the ideals consumerism has created for our society. Our quintessential lady likely ranges from 32 to 42 in age and either lives in a city in the North East of the US, or aspires to do so. Bringing in $80k a year most of her shopping takes place online, especially through mobile, as this allows her to find what she considers fair pricing and investigate deeper into each companies morals. Still, she appreciates welldesigned retail experiences and is loyal to brands that hold ethical standards; something her mother, whom she is still very close to, taught her.

REACH Moving from Conceptual Idea into Trend Forecasting, my goal with Reach was to create an activewear ensemble that allowed for seamless transition from activity to activity; be that yoga class, reconnecting with a friend over coffee, or running errands. I drew inspiration from the heavens, stars, depth and textures of space, and the sense of reverential respect it creates in us. The title Reach gives off a sense of longing; Reach eludes as much to the stars as it does to aerobic poses.

The Heavens. The Depths. This idea of perspective and relativity. Seemingly close yet untouchable. Humbling - constantly reminding us we’re small. Contours and negative space. Where the sky and ocean meet, similar oximorons. Oceans and space are the TWO major frontiers.

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY For 2019 and beyond, commitment to long-term social, environmental and ethical issues will gather pace. Brands focusing on transparency and active in visibly giving back, create trust with younger consumers, most of all. The Giving Keys, Eileen Fischer, and other brands are standing for the concept of “wearing your values,” while others such as Ikea embrace the need for kind collaboration, employing Syrian refugees for a limited edition collection of textiles and rugs.

CONSUMER PROFILE Our ideal woman knows that as of 2017 activewear and fashion are no longer separate entities. She is a busy women and hence looks for pieces that can easily transition through all the errands she has to run in any given day. As an older millennial and possible younger Gen X-er, she is fully aware of healthy habits that create a more optimal version of herself, and though she isn’t a hardcore athlete she embraces wellness as a lifestyle. Her favorite time of day is walking her two precious Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in the morning, followed with a 45 minute yoga session. Her friends have always admired her “morning person” ability, but she herself does not understand how anyone can function without taking a little time for themselves.
