STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal

Project Rationale – Astrid Weguelin What are you proposing to do? (Product, Range & Distribution)

I am proposing to make a visual response to the book ‘Lord of the Flies’. I want to make a book cover, inside illustrations relating to quotes from the book, the book has 9 chapters; I hope to maybe do an illustration for each or more if possible. I then plan to package it all together, possibly in a slipcase. This will all be my main product. If I have time, I plan to take some of the imagery I make and transfer it onto further products such as posters, playing cards etc. What do you want achieve?

I want to create a set of professional, finished looking illustrations, which really communicate the themes from the book – and are recognizable from ‘Lord of the Flies’. I want to start developing more of a consistency/style within my work. I want to build upon skills I have used throughout this year as well as ones involved in this project. What do you want learn from doing it?

I want to be able to work efficiently and effectively to a format (book size). I want to learn about packaging and what different options there are for presenting a book or a series of illustrations. I also want to be able to make my work accessible for a variety of different products and contexts. I want to develop skills in combining text analyzing and visualizing ideas in order to make strong imagery, which really communicates a concept as well as being well composed and technically competent.

THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include Theoretical and non-‐ creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary practice

GENERAL THEMES: Lord of the Flies looks at a lot of strong themes such as civilization vs. barbarity, good vs. evil, the innate savagery within people. As well as dealing with the intense imagination of children and their loss of innocence. There are a lot of allegories, conceptual imagery and strong motifs within the book, which will be interesting to explore. SPECIFIC SUBJECTS: I want to illustrate some of these themes through my depictions of the settings mostly. I will be working from quotes I have picked out from each chapter. There is a lot of beach and jungle imagery, which will allow for a lot of textural experimentation.

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production / distribution of work in response to selected briefs.

SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: - Publishing and book design - Handmade imagery - Literary illustrations - Product and packaging - Hand crafted packaging AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: - Young adults/adults/teens - Fans of hand made imagery - Fans of Lord of the Flies - Fans of adventure books PRODUCTION / DISTRIBUTION METHODS: - Want to try out screen print for some parts – possibly inside of slipcase or onto products - Working with collage, cut out textures, watercolour - Want to possibly do some 3D work, considering making some sort of set out of my cut outs to then photograph in order to create more depth.

CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioner’s and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production / Distribution. ILLUSTRATORS / DESIGNERS / STUDIOS:

Folio Society – have lots of beautifully illustrated books in a similar format I want to work in Laura Carlin – love her style of work, especially her 3D work in some books she has illustrated, very effective and atmospheric Tamara Boyko – has great simple jungle and nature imagery which I have been inspired by Bill Bragg – has done book illustrations for the Folio Society, he has a great sense of composition which I want to improve on Heart Agency – has a good collection of practitioners who work with mixed media and in styles I really like

CREATIVE SKILLS What practical skills do you intend to further develop and apply during your project. What do you intend to use the skills for. Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.

Creating illustrations from texts which accurately communicates the story Summarizing a theme or idea from a long text into one image (book cover) Being able to transfer imagery from illustrations onto further products Developing my composition skills, so to enhance particular feelings or atmospheres Possibly learning to work with 3D illustration

KEY TEXTS. List a selected number of books, articles and texts that are central to your proposed area of practice. These should include a combination of design and non-‐practice based books, theoretical texts as well as visual publications. You should include a list of relevant websites
