The ancient science of numbers has its origin in the prehistoric times. The ancients, as also the Hindu seers and searchers of and for Nature’s laws, were masters of all studies relating to significance of numbers beyond the obvious. The Chaldeans, the Hebrews and the Egyptians are known to have practised numerology. The philosophers of ancient Greece believed that numbers possessed some mysterious power independent of their arithmetical significance. Thomas Taylor in his translation of Lamblicus’ Life of Pythagoras said: “The Pythagoreans received from the theology of Orpheus the principles of intelligible and intellectual numbers; they assigned them an abundant progression, and extended their dominion.” Hence that proverb was peculiar to the Pythagoreans that all things are assimilated to numbers. Numbers are the means employed by us to express definite quantities. They do not express anything of quality. Thus, if we say 2 apples and 2 apples make 4 apples we leave out of consideration the fact that one or more of them may be bad. From this we learn that 2, or any other number, is potentially good or evil, its quantity being unaffected, i.e., even if one apple out of the four is moth-eaten, the quantity of 2+2 will remain 4. The seers of yore were intuitively aware of the importance of numbers and made remarkable study of numbers and their influence over life and events on the Earth. Such studies were usually shrouded in secrecy and hence, it was a practice not to record or write one’s observation lest these fall into the hands of uninitiated who could misuse such knowledge; knowledge which gave power to the one possessing it.

to the book. According to them the occult significance of any number is not expressed by the figure or symbol only. Every number has a certain power which is not expressed by the figure or symbol employed to denote quantity. This power rests in an occult connection existing between the relations of things and the principles in nature of which they are the expressions. Revelation first took a demonstrable from when man evolved the numerical sequence 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9, by whatever symbols it was expressed. For example, number 5 is not merely the figure or symbol of the number 5 denoting a specified quantity. According to numerologists, number 5 may signify many things. It is, amongst others, symbol of the planet Mercury. It is also the number of reason, logic, ethics, travelling, commerce and utility. Let us also observe some more characteristics or significance associated with the number 5. Study the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. Bringing the first and last of these series together in order successively, we have – 1and 9 equals 10 2 and 8 equals 10 3 and 7 equals 10 4 and 6 equals 10 Leaving behind the characteristic number 5, which represents the human species with its five avenues of sensation, its five digits or fingers, its five peduncles or toes, and its five great races. This number was held in great veneration by the ancients, and we find that among the Chinese and the Hindus there is a tendency to count by fives. Thus, the Chinese have the Wu hing or five useful things, the five precepts of conduct, five ranks of office, five kinds of punishment, etc. The five useful things were clay, wood, metal, fire and water. These were ruled by five planets. Saturn ruled the Earth or clay Jupiter ruled wood Venus ruled metal Mars ruled fire Mercury ruled water So they called and named the planets thus, Saturn became the Earth Star, Jupiter the Wood Star, Venus was called the Metal Star, Mars was known as the Fire Star and Mercury the Water Star. fidelity, obedience and sincerity, as regulating the relationship between parents and their children, the rulers and the people, husbands and wives, masters and servants, man and friend. The five kinds of punishment were by fines, the rod the scourge, banishment and death. Thus, five may be said to stand for humanity and human relations, man standing as it were in the middle ground of the manifest and unmanifest worlds. And in a measure cognizing both the material and immaterial worlds by sense and thought, himself being the embodiment of all, an epitome of the universe, a veritable microcosm. The total of the digits 1 to 9 is 45, or nine times 5. The total of the odd numbers is 25, or five times 5. The total of the even numbers is 20, or four times 5. It is a curious set of relations. It is too curious to be ignored. It must therefore be studied.

During the course of his long career as a professional palmist, numerologist and astrologer, Cheiro had the privilege of meeting innumerable celebrities. One of his clients was King Edward VII, then Prince of Wales. The prince was born on 9th November. The Cheiro describes his meeting with the Prince in his memoirs. He told the Prince that number 9 was significant in his life. The month of November is called 'The Second House of Mars’ in astrology and is governed by number 9. Therefore, Cheiro went into great detail in explaining how number 9 will play a very significant role in Edwards’ life. King Edward’s marriage took place in the year 1863, which is, 1+8+6+3=18=1+8=9. He was to be crowned on 27th June which is, 2+7=9. Though he was actually crowned on 9th August. Cheiro also predicted his death in his 69th year. Such is the magic of numbers that King Edward died in his 69th year. So what we have observed is that ancients identified numbers with certain forces. And experience of generations has proved that it is so.

Kabala : The Traditional Knowledge This book will give a glimpse to the Hebrew Kabala, and other ancient systems as well, and gain experience and mastery in this field. The word Kabala means ‘Traditional knowledge’.

A Kabala, as embodying any secret information, may assume a variety of forms – literal, numerical or hieroglyphic. But as we are now concerned chiefly with the nature and power of numbers, it will be advisable to confine ourselves to these, their connection with the literal form, and the uses to which they may be applied. In this connection we shall have to make use of a symbolism which has relation to the planetary system. It will be well, therefore, in this place to give the planetary numbers as revealed by John Haydon in his Holy Guide. The number of the Sun is 1 positive The number of the Sun is 4 negative The number of the Moon is 7positive The number of the Moon is 2 negative The number of Saturn is 8 The number of Jupiter is 3 The number of Mars is 9 The number of Venus is 6 The number of Mercury is 5 Often, this is also called the unit system. The nine unit numbers, from 1 to 9, also known variously as the principal or single or root numbers, not only signify the influence of the planets, the Sun and the Moon, as explained in John Haydon’s Holy Guide, but also represent, amongst them, all 26 letters of the English alphabet, which will be explained later on in the text. The curious or the mysterious cosmic laws of divine intelligence that guide our destinies are sought to be explained through the astrological significance of these nine numbers. There is, however, an extension of number allocation beyond the units and going into the double digit numbers. This extension is associated with Hebrew Kabala or Hebraic system of numerology, representing the traditional knowledge of numbers as dealt within the ancient Hebrew texts. It is based on interpreting the numbers 1 to 22, with each number being linked to the Hebrew alphabet which has twenty two letters.

Kabala Numerology

The Kabballah, also written as Kabala, Cabala, and Qabalah, is an ancient work of Jewish mysticism. There are two major books of the Kabbalah, the Sepher Yetzirah – or Book of Formation, and the Zohar – or Book of Splendour. The Zohar was •rst written in 1275 by a Kabbalist named Moses de leon. The importance of the Kabbalah lies in that it is one of the oldest systems of mystical though on the world. It was regarded for many centuries as the key to all the mysteries of the universe. When Madame Blavatsky compiled her work on esoteric occultism, she called it ‘The Secret Doctrine.’ Mysticism is primarily an attempt of the soul to seek union with God. The Kabbalah asserts that this cannot be achieved in one single leap, but the soul has to make its way through nine spheres of existence. It is a complex system of philosophy which once understood reveals the truth behind entire evolutionary system. Since it is believed that the evolution of life is not an accident but it has been shaped and guided by forces that possess intelligence and purpose, it is reasonably presumed that one can study the underlying principle behind the evolutionary process. This is what the Kabbalists attempt to study in their endeavour to unravel the mystery behind all that exists. The kabbalists divide Man into Four Principles – namely, Spirit, Mind, Soul and Body, corresponding to the four elements of •re, air, water and the earth. These elements in turn correspond to various symbols, colours, as well as numbers. For example the number one signi•es unity, centre, the beginning, the Ego, and is represented by the Sun in Cosmology. And when one divides itself in two, it corresponds to a female principle represented by the Moon – the Earth’s Satellite. If one

represents the Fire, number two signi•es Water element. Likewise numbers from 0 to 9 have various connotations and have major in•uence on our lives and events. To understand the power of numbers, their properties and virtues, is the •rst key to the knowledge of the kabbalah. Number, whether expressed as quantity, sound, form or colour, will ultimately be found to determine all sympathies and antipathies, all discord and harmony between natural goodies and between the soul of Nature and that of man. In order to unravel the mystery of existence, it is essential to •rst understand the Self and its power in relation to the Nature. And, in Kabbalah, to know the power of soul, one has to •rst determine own’s number called the number of destiny. By the right use of numbers all knowledge of the occult is perfected, and by the perfect knowledge of the occult, one is able to predict the future. Sepharial, was born in 1864 in England. He studied the ancient Hindu system of astrology, and later he took up serious study of the science of numbers. He joined the Theosophical Society of madame Blavatsky, and showed his skill in the practice of numerology. He unravelled the mysteries behind certain important events in history by studying the law of periodicity of cycles. On the most popular level he is credited to have achieved uncanny accuracy in predicting in advance the winning combinations in lotteries and horse racing. He even wrote several books of how to apply numerology to pro•table use. Sepharial has attempted to approach as simply as one can in the most complex discipline of numerology. He has largely drawn upon the writings of Pythagoras who is generally credited with being the father of numbers and mathematics. Pythagoras had an elite school where only the chosen few were admitted. Perhaps this restriction was related to the establishment of a brotherhood in which metaphysical mysteries of life were revealed to the initiated. Some of the mysteries were explained through the symbolism and use of numbers. Pythagoras said, “All things have form, and all forms can be de•ned by number”.

From the study of numerology one will learn that throughout our entire universe all forces are moving and are in vibration. These vibrations can be de•ned and communicated through the language of the numbers, from 0 to 9. Most readers are wary of the number 8. It is believed that the number 8, ruled by the planet Saturn, is the number of death and destruction. It is after a great deal of re•ection, observation, and intuition, the seers arrived at the conclusion that number 8 represents death, and then rejuvenation. If we draw from the vedas, we •nd in the Bhagwat Gita, that the 8th son of Devaki and Vasudeva, will bring death to the King Kansa, symbolizing evil. And the 8th child, known as Krishna, was born on the 8th day of the dark half of the month Shravan, which in English calendar falls under the 8th month, namely August. Instances like these are replete in myths and folklore around the world, which the Kabbalists tried to synthesise into their system. The Bible is rich in number of references, starting with the Book of genesis and continuing throughout to Revelations. Psalm 90 says “Teach us to number our days so that we may apply our hearts in wisdom”. An extensive search in the reading of the late Clairvoyant Edgar Cayce will tell of many occasions where numbers were used for signs, signals, and omens to point the way towards a better universal understanding. Even Cheiro, spent his lifetime in the study of numerology and came out with some of his startling predictions. The case of King Edward VII is well known. Upon studying the lines on the King’s palms, who was then the Prince of Wales, Cheiro accurately predicted the date of his coronation. During the subsequent discussion with Cheiro on the subject of numerology, the Prince himself predicted that since Cheiro has proved that the numbers 6 and 9 are extremely signi•cant for him, then he could die at age 69. True to this prediction King Edward VII did die at his age 69. In numerology, the compound numbers 11 and 22 are highly signi•cant. If in harmony, those born on 11 or 22 of any month, will achieve remarkable success in their

career at their age 29 and 40 respectively. And when there is unfavourable combination of 4 or 8, with 11 or 22 of any month, will achieve remarkable success in their career at their age 29 and 40 respectively. And when there is unfavourable combination of 4 or 8, with 11 or 22, then such a person is likely to have unhappy marriage and possibly two marriages. This reminds me of yet another example. A boy of 29, once consulted me and I found very strong negative in•uence of the number 22 in his birth chart. On an impulse I told him that he will be unhappy in his marriage and will have to seek a divorce. He laughed at my prediction for he was happily married for two years and had been in love with his wife for more than three years before his marriage. Several months later he visited me along with his friend and again reminded me that all is well with his married life. Several years later, when the boy was 40, he visited me for consultations. I had completely forgotten the case, and even failed to recognize him. Upon going through his birth chart, I told him once again, about two marriages. He then revealed his identity and told me that he wanted to be certain that it was in his destiny to seek a divorce, before she •led his papers in the court of law. At age 40, he got separated from his wife, proving that the unfavourable birth on the 22nd of any month will lead to such a Fate. This brings us to the most important question that if one knows in a advance about an unfavourable development in one’s life, can one prevent it? Though there are two schools of thoughts amongst the practitioners of the occult, that one can take corrective measures, and the others believe that what has to happen will happen. Through the knowledge of Kabbalah many have tried to change one’s Fate, by changing one’s name, altering the spelling in one’s name, or by supporting a particular colour or a gemstone. I leave this upto the reader to judge if one can control the forces of nature through the knowledge of the occult, or one can only understand the existing phenomenon and accepts it passively.

5 ::: Kabala Numerology

Numbers are used to express quantitative values in relation to Unity, which is the •rst expression of zero (0). From zero all numbers proceed, and into zero they are all resolved again. Thus, it comes about that the digits from •rst to last are represented by the number 10 comprising of 1 and 0, the Alpha and Omega of all enumerations. Here, only the astrological series, or the unit system of numbers 1 to 9 and zero, will be discussed and interpreted. This series should not be confused with the Kabalistic series based on the Hebrew alphabet of twenty two letters, which will be described ahead. In the astrological series each of the nine numbers from 1 to 9 and 0 have their traditional value as a symbol, which are associated with the Sun and members of the Solar system. All nine planets were assigned a number and numbers, therefore, are used to represent or signify the Sun and the planets. For example, 1 and 4 became the symbols of Sun positive and negative respectively; 2 and 7 the Moon negative and positive; 3 became the symbol of Jupiter and so on. Now, let us study what each number, 1 to 9 and 0 (cipher), represents? What are their characteristics? A detailed interpretation is drawn to show the signi•cance of these numbers. Before going into the details of the signi•cance of these numbers, it may be noted that Astrological series or the Unit System or numerology is largely practiced using the English alphabet as its base. Number 1 : Symbol of the Sun 1 is the symbol of the Sun, the light that shone in the darkness of the world’s great night and became the source of all revelation, of heat and light, of wisdom and love, the vortex centre of the universe of world, the archetype. Hence, it is symbolized as a circle with the point in centre. 1 is the symbol of the manifest Deity, who came forth from the Abyss of Nothingness, or In!nitude. One symbolizes manifestation, assertion, the positive and active principles. It stands for the Logos, the manifestation of the In!nite and the Unmanifest. It represents the ego, self-assertion, positivism, egotism, separateness, selfhood, isolation, distinction, self-reliance, dignity and rulership. In a religious sense, it symbolizes the Lord; in a philosophical and scienti!c sense, the synthesis and fundamental unity of things. In a material sense, it symbolizes the unit of life, the individual. It is the beginning; by which all the rest of the nine numbers are created. The basis of all numbers is one; the basis of all life is one. This number represents all that is

creative, individualistic and positive. It stands for force, boldness and activity as well as for powers of organizing and executive ability.

Number 2 : Symbol of the Moon

2 is the symbol of the Moon. The Moon is related to two numbers, of which the number 2 gives the negative vibration. This can be understood as being the position when the Moon is in conjunction with the Sun, i.e. New Moon, and the Moon throwing no ected light upon the Earth. This number denotes relativity, vacillation and change is the sign of New Moon. The Moon also stands for form and the growth of form and is the female counterpart of Number 1, the two together creating the third number. It symbolizes relativity, antithesis, witness, and con"rmation. It denotes the binomial and ‘pairs of opposites,’ as positive and negative, active and passive, male and female, light and dark, etc., in relation to Unity. It represents the dualism of manifested life, as God and nature, Spirit and matter, Osiris and Isis, and their interrelations. It denotes agreement, and separation, the law of alternation, subject and object, ection. As uniting in itself opposite terms or principles, it denotes creation, production, fruition, combination primarily the two conditions, the manifest and the unmanifest, the explicit and the implicit. It denotes the law of alternation in natural operations. It embodies the idea of opposites and the two conditions the manifest and unmanifest; the explicit and implicit; buying and selling.

Number 3 : Symbol of Jupiter 3 is the symbol of the planet Jupiter, a planet which plays the most important role both in astrology and in all systems of numerology. Three is the trilogy of life, substance and intelligence, applicable to the divine being; of force, matter, and consciousness, applicable to natural existence; of creation, preservation, and resolution; of father, mother and child –

Osiris, Isis and Horus – God, Nature and Man. Number 3 also denotes the three dimensions of space; the three postulates the thought, the thinker and the thing; the three parts of time – past, present and future. Thus it denotes in itself the idea of extension in both time and space, and stands for penetration, procedure and pervasion. It is the beginning of what may be termed as one of the main lines of force that runs right through all the numbers from 1 to 9. It has a special relation to every third number in the series such as, three, six, nine. These numbers when added together in any direction produce a nine as their •nal digit. +

The number also stands for inclusion, comprehension, understanding, judgement; for increase, fecundity and propagation; and thus for self-expansion, harvesting of the fruits of action, reward, equity, justice, reproduction in the material world, fatherhood and family. By extension of self it becomes a symbol of sympathy, benevolence, charity, ection, of joy, good fortune, philanthropy, etc., and by and plenty.

Number 4 : Symbol of the Sun 4 is the symbol of the Sun, of which it is the negative number. There is, however, an extension of number allocation beyond the unit, bringing in what may be termed as double or composite numbers from 10 to 22. This extension is associated with the Hebrew Kabala. The word Kabala means Traditional Knowledge. In Hebrew Kabala, the numbers are linked to the Hebrew alphabet. In the Hebrew alphabet there are 22 letters and these are linked with the numbers from 1 to 22. The English alphabet, on the other hand, has 26 letters or characters. Therefore, for English language readers to use and interpret numbers according to the Hebrew Kabala, it is necessary to establish a link between the English alphabet and the Hebrew alphabet or letters. As the English alphabet consists of 26 letters, it is necessary in certain instances, to group more than one English alphabet for the corresponding Hebrew letter. The Unit System is based on nine unit numbers from 1 to 9; the Hebrew Kabala is based on twenty two numbers from 1 to 22. 2.
