When Frank Lloyd Wright approached Grady Gammage in 1957, his vision for a dynamic performing arts auditorium existed only in architectural sketches. As many of you may know, our beloved theater was originally intended for another desert landscape, a plan that never came to fruition. However, Wright used the original design to create what we now call our home for live theater and performing arts—ASU Gammage.
Our doors opened in 1964 with a performance by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy, marking the beginning of a cultural legacy that would transcend generations. From our first Broadway production of Camelot to Andy Warhol’s thought-provoking lecture in 1967 and Ray Charles’ unforgettable performance in 1968, ASU Gammage quickly became a beacon of artistic excellence.
In the years that followed, ASU Gammage hosted an impressive array of performances and events. Throughout the 1970s, our stage welcomed legends such as Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, B.B. King, and Bruce Springsteen. The theater’s cultural significance was further solidified when scenes from the 1976 film A Star is Born were filmed within its walls.
Our recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 stands as a testament to ASU Gammage’s architectural and cultural importance. The 1990s ushered in a new era of growth and innovation, marked by the premiere of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in 1994, the longest-running show in our history, and the launch of the Cultural Participation initiative in 1991, which continues to connect our community through the arts.
As we reflect on over six decades of history, from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s groundbreaking performance in 1969 to physicist Stephen Hawking’s inspiring lecture in 2011 and the record-breaking premiere of HAMILTON in 2018, we are reminded of the enduring power of the arts to touch hearts and transform lives.
The pandemic in 2020 tested us all in ways we could never have imagined, and the closure of our beloved theater for 18 long months was a time of reflection and resilience. But in 2021, when our stage lights came back on, they shone brighter than ever. We embarked on major renovations, updating our stage and dressing rooms with the generous support of sponsors who believe in the importance of preserving this cultural treasure.
Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. Starting at page 15 you’ll find the community impact of our theater throughout the past year. Together, we look forward to continuing the legacy of innovation and excellence that has made ASU Gammage a beacon of creativity and inspiration for generations to come.

ASU Gammage is among just a few places in the United States that is home to an Æolian-Skinner pipe organ.
The Æolian-Skinner organ, installed in 1965 at Gammage, was generously gifted by Mr. and Mrs. Hugh W. Long at a cost of $100,000. Featuring 870 cathedral-style pipes, it debuted with a gala recital by Dr. Alexander Schreiner of Salt Lake City. Charles Brown, appointed university organist in 1966, began student noontime concerts. Initially used for classes and recitals, it now hosts special and unique events.

Setting the Stage
By Heather Fuentes
In a world where the arts often struggle for recognition and support, there are those who stand out for their unwavering commitment to preserving and enriching the cultural landscape.
Justin and Rosey Kerchal are two such individuals, whose journey from theater enthusiasts to dedicated patrons of the arts is a testament to the power of community involvement and personal passion. Their story reminds us of the importance of supporting the arts and reveals the deep connections that can be formed through shared experiences and charitable giving.
Their shared love for theater became evident early on, as they frequently attended shows at ASU Gammage—a cultural landmark
in their relationship. Today, they often share time at the venue with their 16-year-old son, Jason, who is also learning to appreciate the arts. Their family is rounded out with their three cats, Tigger, Hemmy, and Gypsy, and their English bulldog named Chloe.
Justin and Rosey decided to become season ticket holders six years ago. They recalled some of their favorite experiences, such as seeing THE LION KING and THE BOOK OF MORMON and performances by Kristina Wong. However, Justin and Rosey believe that the arts are not just about the performances we see, but also about the support systems that make those performances possible.
Justin and Rosey’s transition from being theatergoers to becoming donors was a natural progression of their dedication to support the cultural organizations they hold dear. Like so many, their decision was significantly influenced by their interactions with the dedicated team at ASU Gammage who helped them see the impact of their contributions. Justin and Rosey are especially proud of their support of the community engagement and educational outreach programs.
Both Justin and Rosey value transparency and the effective use of funds, which they find in ASU Gammage’s commitment to allocating donations towards impactful programming and clear communication on how

those funds are spent. Their support reflects their broader philosophy of giving, which focuses on organizations bringing true value to their communities. Their motivation to support ASU Gammage specifically also stems from the realization that many arts organizations operate with limited funding. The misconception that Gammage receives substantial support from the university was a surprising revelation for the couple. They appreciate that ASU Gammage relies on community support to fund its operations and programs, which strengthens their resolve to grow their contributions.
Beyond their passion for theater, Justin and Rosey are avid travelers. Their Mediterranean cruise in 2018, which included stops in Barcelona, Spain,
France, and Italy, stands out as one of their favorite trips. They have also enjoyed exploring New York, where they took in shows like SWEENEY TODD and & JULIET on Broadway. Their travels reflect a broader curiosity and appreciation for different cultures, which complements their love for the arts. Whether it’s attending Broadway shows or cruising through historic ports, their experiences enrich their lives and inspire their continued support for arts and culture.
When asked what advice they would give to others considering support for the arts, Justin and Rosey emphasize the importance of starting small and understanding where your donation goes. They suggest that even a modest contribution
can make a difference and encourage potential donors to explore the impact of their gifts. Their own journey from casual theatergoers to dedicated patrons illustrates how initial support can grow into a meaningful and sustained commitment.
For Justin and Rosey, the theater is more than just a stage to watch performances — it is a cornerstone of their community involvement and a source of lasting memories and connections.
