do YOU want to solve?
Pursue your passion. Henry Chinyere, BS kinesiology ’19, had an interest in science and a commitment to underserved communities that drove him toward medicine. While at ASU, Henry interned at Sonoran Orthopedic Trauma Surgeons. He volunteered with student organizations, including Arizona Global Health Project, and was a part of the Exercise for Adults with Down Syndrome research program. His advice? “Identify what you are passionate about early on and let that dictate the clubs you become a part of and the extracurricular activities you seek out.” Henry was accepted to two medical schools.

Student involvement
YOU transform Pursuing your passion outside of the classroom enhances your time as a student. Getting involved lets you explore your interests while helping others. Make your college experience the best it can be by doing what you love.
Join student clubs Clubs and student organizations are a great opportunity to make friends, but they also help you explore your interests and get experience in your field. The SunDevilSync website can guide you to student clubs and organizations. Invest your time in one, or branch out and explore many.
Volunteer in the community Whether once a month or weekly, you have an opportunity to make a difference. Tutoring, sorting food and assisting in a hospital are just a few of the many ways you can get involved, which you’ll learn about through your courses or by using VolunteerMatch, a database of local and on-campus offerings.
Lend a hand at SHOW Student Health Outreach for Wellness (SHOW) is a student-led initiative working to provide free health care to vulnerable populations in Maricopa County, including people recovering from substance abuse disorders or experiencing homelessness. Offer your growing expertise through four service areas: the Crossroads Mesa clinic, the Downtown clinic, street medicine in downtown Phoenix or integrated health education programs.
Try new things. Anjali Agrawal, BS health sciences ’17, was president of ASU’s American Medical Student Association pre-health club. She also worked as a medical scribe for a local hand surgeon. Agrawal’s advice to students: “Get involved with student clubs; they exposed me to many different fields within medicine and helped guide my decision to apply to osteopathic medical schools.” Agrawal received offers from all five medical schools with which she interviewed.
Help others. Vivienne Gellert, BS medical studies ’17, is the daughter of two physicians and was on a focused path to becoming a doctor herself. An internship as a medical scribe at a hospital in a low-income area of Phoenix inspired a major change in direction. Driven to help the homeless she saw coming into the hospital, she started a studentrun initiative called BAKPAK that provided local homeless people with a backpack full of basic food and supplies. BAKPAK recipients also attended workshops to refill the backpacks, which established a meaningful partnership based on shared trust between the students and the individuals. She’s since founded Elaine, a nonprofit that provides transportation to underserved populations, and Gellert Health, a health navigation service that assists vulnerable patients in managing complicated health care and social support systems. “You aren’t too young to do anything if you have the passion and drive to see it through,” Gellert says.
Research
YOU discover Research is key to what we do, and we want to get you started as soon as possible. You can contribute to research from the very beginning of your educational experience — another way for you to make a real difference.
Your research opportunities Translational teams Our translational teams are all about impact. You can work with faculty, other students and community members on pressing health problems in our communities, with the intention of getting science out of the laboratory quickly. You’ll develop, apply, analyze and iterate interventions in order to find what works.
Citizen science Citizen science takes place when people assist scientists by getting involved in research projects — large and small. Students help with everything from figuring out what to study to collecting and interpreting data. It’s a great way to learn about research and make a difference. As a citizen scientist, you might take photos to add information on health indicators in an urban corridor, or you could join in nationwide SciStarter modules available in undergraduate courses.
Faculty research No matter the program, we have faculty investigating issues and finding potential solutions to big problems through their research. Many actively recruit students to participate, whether in data collection, working with subjects, distilling information or helping with reporting and communication needs. Pursue research projects that suit your interests.
Research
You can benefit from our commitment to research and initiatives that improve health outcomes, demonstrated by the millions of dollars spent on research each year. These are just a few examples of our efforts that you can get involved in:
Babble Boot Camp Our researchers are investigating whether speech and language disorders can be prevented before they start. They’re creating interventions that encourage cooing and babbling in infants and toddlers for families dealing with classic galactosemia, a disease with a high risk for such disorders.
Adapting goals for life WalkIT Arizona examines if adaptive or static goals better encourage physical activity during the ups and downs of life. One group receives a goal of 10,000 steps per day while the rest get a different step goal each day based on their past progress.
Dental care for kids The National Safety Net Advancement Center aims to improve oral health care for Arizona’s children. The center promotes value-based payment where providers are paid for the outcomes of their work rather than the number of procedures they do.
Project ECHO A revolution in medical education and care delivery, Project ECHO connects health experts to providers in rural and underserved communities to give training in specialty care services. Our faculty share their expertise to amplify local capacity across remote areas of Arizona.

Keep pushing. Sasha Bayat, BS nutrition (dietetics) ’18, pursued her passion for using food as medicine as a student. During her final semester, Bayat — along with three partners who are also ASU graduates — opened The Bodhi, a fast-casual restaurant that offers healthy options to hungry diners near ASU’s Tempe campus. As a student, Bayat suffered a debilitating stroke and credits support from her professors and the diversity of her ASU environment as helping her get to the finish line. “Every tool that you could possibly imagine is available to you at ASU,” says Bayat. She now supports the education of others by hiring students at her restaurant and is working with an ASU graduate student to achieve a zero-waste goal at The Bodhi.
