Doctor of Audiology The Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program at ASU’s College of Health Solutions is a full-time, three-year residential program with an option to add a flexible one-year clinical externship. You will gain the knowledge needed to assess patients for balance disorders, evaluate for central auditory process disorders, identify hearing loss across the lifespan, teach communication strategies and guide patients through hearing aid or cochlear implant selection and management. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to participate in research and teaching experiences. Our highly ranked program prepares audiologists for autonomous clinical practice in diverse settings. Successful graduates have the diagnostic and rehabilitative skills necessary to fulfill the current scope of practice outlined by the American Speech-LanguageHearing Association (ASHA) and meet standards required for ASHA certification and Arizona licensure. Some examples of notable employers after graduation are Stanford University, the U.S. Army, University of Michigan, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, University of Missouri-Kansas City Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Atlanta and Phoenix Children’s Hospital. ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic

In the AuD program, year-round coursework, comprehensive exams and clinical rotations prepare you to become a certified audiologist.

Get hands-on training at the ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic, located on our Tempe campus. Graduate students provide diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology services under supervision by ASHA-certified faculty. Clients include children and adults of all ages and needs, giving you critical hands-on experience working with a variety of patients.

Sample program of study – Year one

On- and off-campus practicum rotations

Fall semester SHS 526 Launch to Clinic Learn policies and procedures necessary for clinical success in the ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic. SHS 502 Basic Audiometry Learn the purposes and procedures for the core clinical tests of auditory function. SHS 504 Amplification I Study the operation, electroacoustic measurement and fitting of amplification devices. SHS 513 Neurophysiology of the Auditory System Explore the neurophysiology of the auditory system and changes linked with hearing loss.

Spring semester SHS 580 Clinical Practicum in Audiology Participate in a supervised and structured practical experience at the ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic. SHS 510 Amplification II Learn advanced verification, validation and fitting techniques of amplification and assistive technology. SHS 552 Physiological Measures of Auditory Function Focus on the measurement of otoacoustic emissions and acoustic immittance. SHS 511 Auditory Perception by the Hearing Impaired Examine psychophysical methods and behavioral aspects of hearing, emphasizing perceptual consequences of sensorineural hearing loss.

The clinical component of the program begins with three semesters of closely monitored on-campus practicum working with patients in the ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic. Then you will complete four off-campus rotations with opportunities at local hospitals; ear, nose and throat practices; private clinics; and K-12 schools, or at an on-campus Super Clinic with a supervised but independent clinical practicum.

Externship option An optional fourth-year externship is available for students who want additional experience working in audiology sub-specialty fields. The hours can also help fill the requirements for clinical competency in audiology (CCC-A) from ASHA. Our AuD students consistently obtain competitive externships across the country.

Summer semester SHS 505 Sign Language for Audiologists and Speech Pathologists Learn effective manual and alternative methods of communication with deaf individuals in clinical settings. SHS 580 Clinical Practicum in Audiology Participate in a supervised and structured practical experience at the ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic.
