Project: To design an intervention space along 5th ave after studying the blocks surrounding the site.My design originated from a study of the grid of datum lines of buildings in the blocks around the Apple store; a symbol of modern consumerism that marks an important distinction in the dynamic of 5th avenue due to its position at the base of central park. Analysis of the grid and the programmatic qualities of this area revealed isolation between the blocks, as well as a lack of resting places due to a focus on retail and commerce. Therefore my design stems from the apple store, breaks down the masses of the blocks and develops unique above and below grade recreational spaces. The main program is body flight, which calls for vertical wind tunnels over each street the design spans, calling attention to floating figures at the most visible points in the four block radius. This serves the purpose of bringing focus back the body in an economically focused area that neglects the individual.
